Welcome to the 2020 edition of International Students House’s annual magazine, ISH news. At this time, wherever we are in the world, we find ourselves in unprecedented circumstances, and whilst so much about the way we live and work at ISH has changed, we remain as committed as ever to our core values and mission.

A number of our students have returned to their families, but for those that remain with us, ISH continues to be a secure home away from home where the safety and wellbeing of our residents and staff is our top priority.

At times like this we are reminded of the importance of community. Our strong global network of students, alumni (affectionately known as Goats) and supporters has always been so central to the spirit and success of ISH. In this magazine we highlight the stories of some of the members of this great community and hope that these bring some warmth and/or a welcome distraction in these unsettling times.

2020 is a landmark year for ISH. It is exactly 50 years since ISH welcomed its first female residents. We also celebrate 20 years of our scholarship partnership with many of our London universities. In February, the completion of the sale of Mary Trevelyan Hall and the adjoining flats at York Terrace East took place.

Whilst we are sad to have to say goodbye to a building that is so dear to our community, this is an essential milestone for ISH as it seeks to refresh its property portfolio to meet the future needs of our students.

Beyond this magazine, I invite and encourage you all to stay connected with us and with each other.

In the year that marks 50 years since women first became residents at International Students House, we want to celebrate and highlight stories of many of the women who have been instrumental in shaping the legacy of ISH. Many of us know about Mary Trevelyan, founder and first Director of ISH. We take a snapshot look at her life pre-ISH to learn something about the years that shaped the woman many of us know of, and only the fortunate among us knew personally.

Mary Trevelyan was born on 22nd January 1897 to the Reverend George Philip Trevelyan and his wife, Monica Phillips. Both Mary’s grandfathers were vicars, and she was raised in a family committed to public service. The eldest of six children, Mary had a privileged childhood in a well-connected, upper-middle-class family. As well as being the great-great-granddaughter of a baronet, she was the second cousin to the historian, G.M. Trevelyan. Mary grew into a determined, idealistic and energetic adult. Her friend, the poet T. S. Eliot, described her as ‘industrious, honest, and moderately temperate’ [1].

After beginning her career as a music teacher, Mary Trevelyan took up the post of Warden of the Student Christian Movement’s Student Movement House (SMH) in 1932. Situated at 32 Russell Square in London’s Bloomsbury, SMH was a non-residential club for overseas students. Among its members in the 1930s was Jomo (Johnstone) Kenyatta, later the first President of Kenya. Some members were Britons from overseas, such as those of missionary families.

In 1937, Trevelyan took a sabbatical to travel to Ceylon, India, Burma, Singapore, Penang, China,

Japan, America and Canada. She wanted to learn about the worlds into which the international students were returning [2]. Mary was particularly inspired by her visit to the residential International House of New York in the USA, and she returned to London fully committed to promoting internationalism and peaceful co-operation among young people.

From 1938, as SMH Warden, Mary, led a fundraising campaign to pay for a new building for the club. SMH’s Russell Square premises was set to be destroyed in plans for the London University extension of 1939. In April of that year, SMH moved into new premises at 103 Gower Street.[3] During the Second World War, Trevelyan remained in post until September 1944, when she was granted leave of absence by SCM to go to Brussels to run a YMCA leave hostel for allied soldiers. After returning in May 1945, tensions developed between Trevelyan and her SCM employers. In 1946, after beginning an appeal for another new building Trevelyan resigned from her post and left SMH. But she continued to dream ‘of the great International House which we would set up in London’ in the model of the International Houses of the United States.[4] This residential House would offer a more significant opportunity for students of different backgrounds to ‘get to know each other better’[5]. Trevelyan’s dream became a reality in May 1965 when International Students House was opened in Park Crescent.

International Students House stands as her legacy, and we continue to promote her ethos of internationalism and peaceful co-operation among young people.

As you walk around the reception of ISH at Great Portland Street, there is one portion of the wall that draws everyone’s attention – the Scholars Wall.

It is a colourful display of portraits of the current recipients of the different scholarships that we offer in partnership with our university members; a representation of the diversity of talent and accomplishment in the House. Behind each face is a story and in this edition of the magazine, we had a chat with Thandeka Mfinyongo (TM), a South African musician who is currently pursuing a Masters in Music Performance at SOAS.

Tell us about Thandeka. A bit of where you’re from, what you’ve studied and what you were doing before you started your Masters.

TM: I was born and raised in Nyanga East, Cape Town – that’s in South Africa. I don’t know if this will be a surprise – but people look at my green hair, bold colours and style of dress and assume that I’m this confident extrovert. I mean I am (I take it as a complement), but I’m quite a sensitive and love a good laugh.

My love and passion for performing arts started at church (as is the case with a lot of musicians) when I was quite young. After matric, I pursued the music and in 2017, I graduated first with a Performer’s Diploma in Music and then with an Advanced Diploma in African Music in 2018. And they were both from the University of Cape Town. And now I’m at SOAS – doing my Masters in Music Performance. I’ve been performing, on different stages over the last few years and in 2018, I released my first single called Wenza Ngabom which I also got to perform on a local TV station show in South Africa.

The day you received the news that you’d been awarded the scholarship, how did you feel?

TM: Firstly, this programme is specifically designed for professional and amateur performers. I wanted to broaden my knowledge in world music traditions and what better place than SOAS. Also, the fact that it would combine the theoretic with the practical element was a huge draw.

Also, I love strings! When I was studying in S.A, I specialised in two African traditional instruments - uhadi and umrhubhe. When I hear that melancholic sound, it reminds me of folk stories and connects me to my roots.

I’ve always been drawn to the sounds of the past – they carry stories of days gone by, lessons and words of advice from our elders. Using those two instruments, I’ve made music that talks about social injustice, grief, love and loss – a journey of soul-searching. Now, I’m learning to play the kora, a West African harp of kinds and I’m exploring the connection (if any) between the indigenous instruments from the different regions.

Making music using these traditional instruments is challenging because when it comes to airplay, you find yourself competing with the more mainstream sound.

But I see myself as more than a performer – I’m trying to preserve a bit of our culture that has been lost over the years.

SCHOLAR STORY

Thandeka is a bold and powerful artist who feels a deep desire to make her mark in the world. A tremendous presence on stage, she has over 20 years of experience as a vocalist and over 5 years of playing the uhadi and umrhubhe. She is inspired by older generations of African musicians such as Madosini, whom she spent time and performed with, learning from her and deepening her appreciation for the traditional instruments and indigenous music. She has performed on various stages including the Baxter Theatre, Artscape and local stages and churches. Some of her notable performances included one of her poems at the Land Act 1913 Commemoration at the Homecoming in District Six in Dec 2013; singing with Lingua Franca Poetry Movement in Chicago, USA in 2018; performing and teaching in Mozambique in 2016 with the UCT iBuyambo Orchestra; performing at the Zabalaza Festival in 2013, and at a production for June 16 at Artscape in 2013. In March 2014 she was selected by the Department of Arts and Culture in the Western Cape to participate in the International Jazz Festival Skills Development.

TM: I really couldn’t believe it! Like wow! I mean I had applied and I really wanted to get into SOAS but I wasn’t confident that I’d actually get it. And even during my first few weeks in London, I still couldn’t process it. I’d have moments when I still couldn’t believe that I was here. In London. Studying at one of the best specialised institutions in the world. The whole experience has just been incredible.

What was your first impression of London and SOAS?

TM: London is FAST! Honestly, I found it very fast paced and it looked like everyone was just always in a hurry. I felt overwhelmed, anxious and I was just worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up. Cape Town was a lot more relaxed. But I think I’ve adapted. I’m now in tune with the pulse of the city. And although London is really big, I’ve taken to exploring a little bit at a time.

SOAS felt like home - the diversity of the students and the campus. I’ve often found myself at the student bar a couple of times, especially for the variety of performances they host. The highlight of course was meeting Edith WeUtonga, a fellow musician from Zimbabwe. We really bonded and that friendship has made my uni experience special.

And what made you go for that particular course?

Any particular instruments that you are specialising in?

What do you find most challenging about your course?

TM: It’s a lot of reading! It’s true - doing a masters in one year means intense readings and coursework.

I’ve been struggling to balance my reading across the different classes – tend to read more for one class and then find myself behind in another. It’s one kind of a balancing act!

And when you’re not in the library or in class, where can we find you?

TM: I’m in my room – sometimes Netflix, other times, I have a mini session with my instruments. I also love attending musical performances at SOAS and other venues around London. And bowling! I’m quite good at bowling.

What would you advise someone who is thinking about taking up the same course?

TM: Be ready to work HARD and make sure you’re mentally ready to do the work. You can do it – the readings, the classes, everything! So go for it!

FOCUS ON HRH the Princess Royal became the patron of International Students House in 2002. She is probably one of the lesser known members of the royal family, so we’re going to try to challenge that with some hard facts.

Princess Anne was born August 15, 1950, and at the time of her birth, she was 2nd in line to the throne, behind her older brother Prince Charles. Now, she is fourteenth, following the arrival of Prince Louis last year, and Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor in May. Anne falls behind her more youthful siblings in the order of succession because male primogeniture was the custom for the royal family from the Act of Settlement of 1701 up until 2013. The Succession to the Crown Act of 2013, which guarantees that a female successor cannot be surpassed in the line to the throne by a younger male heir, only applies to royals born after October 28, 2011.

As the daughter of the monarch, Anne was granted the title of princess at birth. In 1987, the Queen approved her the additional title of HRH The Princess Royal.

Princess Charlotte will more than likely hold the title after Prince William becomes King, however, it is not automatic.

It is a title that stays for life, so Princess Charlotte will have to wait until the death of Anne before she inherits the title.

She is currently married to Sir Timothy Laurence, a retired British marine officer and former equerry to the Queen. The couple wed in a quiet ceremony in a Presbyterian church near Balmoral in December of 1992. Princess Anne was previously married to Captain Mark Phillips, an Olympic equestrian and retired military officer. She and Phillips have two children together: Peter Phillips and Zara Tindall. Anne also has four grandchildren: Savannah Phillips, Isla

Phillips, Mia Tindall, and Lena Tindall, who was born in 2019.

As Donna Summer said – She works hard for the money. Anne entered public life at age 18, and she continues to function as a working royal. She is associated with upwards of 300 different charity organisations; ISH being one. Anne invested approximately 180 days at royal engagements in 2018, making her the busiest member of the royal household.

She is a keen equestrian. In 1976, she competed in the Olympic Games riding one of her mother’s horses, and now she acts as the president of the British Olympic Association and a member of the International Olympic Committee.

According to the royal family’s website, “the Princess also competed in multiple European Three-Day Event Championships, winning a gold medal in the 1971 individual discipline and silver in both the individual and team disciplines in 1975.”

Of her love of horses, Anne’s father has stated, “if it doesn’t fart or eat hay she isn’t interested.” and of herself she said “When I appear in public people expect me to neigh, grind my teeth, paw the ground and swish my tail - none of which is easy.”

While all other female members of the Royal household stay on the Buckingham Palace veranda for Trooping The Colour, The Princess Royal rides together with her brothers Prince Charles and Prince Andrew. The reason Princess Anne rides horseback during the parade, rather than arriving in a carriage like other members of her family, is due to the fact that she’s a royal colonel, and more specifically she is a colonel of the Household Division.

In addition to being an Olympic standard equestrian she is as hard as nails. In 1974, a 26-year-old named Ian Ball attempted to kidnap the princess for a ransom of ₤2 million pounds; however, Anne and her no-nonsense attitude were not to be messed with.

“It was all so infuriating; I kept saying I didn’t want to get out of the car, and I was not going to get out of the car,” she said, according to the BBC. “I nearly lost my temper with him, but I knew that if I did, I should hit him and he would shoot me.”

Ball was eventually apprehended by police. Then-Prime Minister Harold Wilson applauded Anne in government

papers, stating she acted with “quite extraordinary courage and presence of mind,” in the situation.

If all this isn’t enough she is an eco-warrior too. Anne recycles her outfits for decades. In the recent photos from The Commonwealth Day celebration she is seen wearing attire first worn 40 years ago at the Royal Ascot in June 1980. This has been a much-mocked trait but we think it’s sustainable, thrifty and highlights how well she’s kept in shape over the years.

In conclusion, our patron is quite the renegade and the perfect fit for an international youth organisation that seeks to promote the message of inclusion in a climate of uncertainty.

LEAVING A LASTING LEGACY 12 NEWS FROM INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS HOUSE ALUMNI

It’s a Friday morning when Julie Lewis walks into the foyer at International Students House; a foyer that has transformed into a bright, airy and colourful reception area since she first set foot into the building over forty years ago. She unbuttons her coat and eases into one of the chairs, making herself comfortable – after all this is home. She sits back, quietly observing the young, diverse faces that make up the majority of the residents as they make their way from breakfast back to their rooms, engrossed in animated conversation.

She smiles; to think that years ago, she was one of these young faces – how time flies. This is the first thing she expresses as we start the conversation on how she came to be one of the most active and dedicated members of the ISH alumni, despite not being a resident during the course of her studies.

‘It’s frightening to come to London on your own, leaving your family, your friends… the ones who are accommodated at ISH are especially lucky. I was lucky to find my way to ISH and I often think how different my story would have been if I hadn’t found this home away from home.’

When Julie was an international student from South Africa at London College of Fashion more than forty years ago, London was not as multicultural as it is today. So, when a classmate who was a Student Advisor at ISH, invited her to one of the weekly talks held in the House, Julie was excited to find a place where she could interact with students from around the globe in the heart of the big city. The Mary Trevelyan Talks, established and named after the founder of ISH, brought together students from different universities for conversations with dignitaries and interesting individuals. Julie recalls spending most of her evenings and weekends at the House, networking and learning from the weekly talks and activities.

‘On Tuesdays when we used to meet up, the room would fill up – everyone would be on their feet; the anticipation, the respect and because no one wanted to miss the talks. Every time was different; it was special and the guests were always a surprise. While there were strict rules, everyone just respected the guests and would attend every single talk. Nobody said a word. It was organised. Dignified.’

Not only did Julie find friends among the students, but she soon bonded with some of the staff as well, establishing relationships with people who contributed

ISH.ORG.UK/ALUMNI to her experience of British culture. ISH was an open door that gave her access to meet a new community of people and some of these interactions developed into friendships as she always found a host from the ISH family every time she travelled.

‘It was just a continuation of ISH outside London.’

When she needed some financial assistance to continue with her studies, the network that Julie had entered at ISH proved valuable as she was able to secure funding from the Africa Trust, after futile applications to different charities. With this funding, she was able to complete her studies and soon after settled down in South London where she is an active member of the community, all the while engaging with ISH on a regular basis as an alumna. She’s attended several of the London Alumni Reunions and some regular in-house events, such as the Scholars’ Welcome Reception. Julie commends the scholarship programme that ISH runs in partnership with its member universities as a life-changing project that she proudly endorses.

‘It’s a lifeline to the students whose backgrounds would otherwise inhibit their ambitions. And to be able to contribute to this initiative, to ensure that more students get the chance to pursue their dreams is the reason I’ve pledged a gift to the House as part of my legacy.’

Leaving a legacy gift is one way of ensuring the continuity and growth of International Students House.

When Mary Trevelyan established the House, her vision was to provide students with a safe haven in central London with activities to encourage a spirit of global friendship and cultural understanding. In light of Brexit and the global border crises, the mission is still as relevant today as it was back in 1965. Safe spaces such as ISH foster a community that embraces individuals from different backgrounds, giving anyone who walks through the House a sense of belonging and empowering students who will one day be the leaders, presidents and captains of industry.

As well as the rising cost of tuition, how aware are we of some of the legislative changes that pose additional 100,000 barriers to accessing higher education? As we consider and try to understand more about what a post Brexit UK means for International and home students, it is worth looking back at some of the policy changes that have impacted students in recent years.

To fulfil the maintenance requirement of the student visa, prospective students must be able to show that they have a full years tuition and £11,385 in living expenses (or £1,265 for each month if below 9 months), available in total upfront.

In the 21 years since tuition fees were introduced for UK students, the cost per year for undergraduate study has risen from £1000 to up to £9250 annually.

At ISH, our charity mission of supporting students in achieving their academic and career aspirations in an environment that actively promotes global friendship is at the core of everything that we do. Our home at 229 Great Portland Street is a vibrant hub of activity, and all profit from our café/bar and venue spaces, directly support our charity activity. Every time you buy a coffee, attend a gig, book or refer our venues you are supporting our students, so do remember to pop into the Thirsty scholar when you’re in the area and check our listings for upcoming events.

Through our scholarships, hardship fund and comprehensive offering of cultural events and support activities, we provide our students with a transformational and immersive experience that would not be possible without the generosity of our donors, partners and clients. There are several ways that you can get involved in supporting ISH and help us to continue to transform lives.

WHAT can I support?

Scholarships In 2019/20 ISH offered 107 accommodation scholarships. To sustain and grow the program we need ongoing support. Donors can make a contribution to the overall scholarship fund or could sponsor a full named scholarship/s.

Mary Trevelyan hardship fund Donors can contribute to the hardship fund which offers grants or loans of up to £1000 to students who encounter an unforeseen financial emergency during their studies.

General ISH donations General donations are also welcomed and will be used to support the areas of the charity mission with the greatest need.

Communities can be formed around the strangest things. People are drawn together by things as varied as sharing experiences or resources, supporting the same cause, or simply by kicking the same ball. As unpredictable and unique as each community can be, the experience of being part of a group can be comforting and life changing. At ISH, some of the strongest and most diverse communities formed in 2019 have been the sports teams. We have seen a number of residents interacting and competing on the football pitch, on the cricket lawns and in various sporting grounds. Sport is a universal language and one of the most uniting and inspiring tools for peace and development around the globe. This year, sport played a major role in bringing the House together.

ISH FC After a long hiatus, this year saw the return of ISH Football Club. Training once a week on a 5-a-side pitch in Farringdon, ISH FC has featured 40 different players from 23 different countries. The team has also been competing in weekly league matches on Warren Street, finishing last season in a respectable mid-table position. The club’s motto is ‘all ages, genders and abilities welcome’, a reflection of the diversity of the group which comprises students of different sexes, varied ability and at various stages in their studies. Not only is the team rich in talent but it serves as a platform to bridge cultural and language differences between

the players who hail from countries as far flung as Swaziland, Palestine, Iceland and China.

‘ISH FC stands out not only because of its diversity, but it’s a place where you learn about accepting, adapting and accommodating each other as a team,’ says Mohammad Elkhatib, a footballer and student from Gaza in Palestine.

‘Adapting and being open to other people’s strengths, weaknesses and opinions are skills that are necessary for one to integrate in the multicultural city of London.’

ISH Social Cricket Club This summer, our residents took to Regents Park with bats, balls (and bags upon bags of snacks) to form the Social Cricket Club.

Led by tireless Resident Advisors, Nathan Parekh-Hill and Ibrahim Haidar. The Cricket Club provided an opportunity for students to enjoy the brief English sun in one of the most English ways imaginable. It also provided a small relief during exam season, drawing blinking residents out into the light after long nights of study and getting them active and socialising with new people and cultures they otherwise would never have encountered.

‘I’d never actually played cricket before coming to London. I had no idea how the game was played but after my first game (which I showed up to in my ‘study’ clothes, boots and all), I was hooked! And I turned up for every Sunday game after that,’ said Isabelle Rønhovde, a Finnish resident and active member of the ISH Social Cricket Club.

ISH Sports Club Each month the Events Department selects a different culture to explore with residents and members through cultural and sporting events; be it cooking classes, a trip to a cultural centre or exhibit, dinner parties or sports activities. This year we’ve had the opportunity to learn new sports from all over the world. From ice skating at Alexandra Palace at Christmas and learning martial arts from a 35th Generation Shaolin Master to turning the Theatre downstairs into a full size Croquet lawn; all were spectacular events. But the greatest and most memorable moments were much simpler, when our residents shared their own cultures and interests with their peers; Kazakhstani resident Aigerim Toleukhanova gave a lesson on Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Brazilian resident Carlos Matos ran a Martial Arts for Self Defence course, and former resident Sthef Luna still teaches Yoga to our students every week! Whistle blows, we go again.

Flashback Bonding through sport has been an important pillar in ISH’s community since the acquisition of the Great Portland Street building in 1965. Many former residents, such as Nelly Torras from Barcelona, made frequent use of ISH’s own indoor squash courts (since converted into the theatre downstairs), and often visited the tennis courts across the road in Regent’s Park. Although only living at ISH for one year (1991-1992), Nelly recalls how playing sport was particularly important for her and her floormates, not only to exercise for health reasons but as a welcome social break from her studies. Sports within the ISH community have always provided a valuable opportunity for even the least likely athletes to engage in a rewarding social experience. She fondly remembers venturing to the Regent’s Park tennis courts with her peers every weekend, and after every game, the group would reconvene for to share cookies and tea and enjoy down time together. She has since reconnected via letters with ISH’s former squash coach, Peter Stokes in London, who continues to play tennis in Regent’s Park. Some traditions will always live on.

history. ISH Scholar Nicholaus Prasetya and Sakis Athanatos, our charismatic barista, ran the London Marathon to raise money for the ISH Scholarship programme. Cheered on by ISH staff and students at the finish line, Nicho and Sakis raised £1065 to support our Scholars coming to London. Nicho was an ISH Patrick Wills Imperial Scholar, and his experience here was a big part of his decision to raise money for the scholarships programme.

Since I also do believe in the importance of education to change the world, so do I strongly believe in what ISH always tries to promote.”

The memories we’ve shared at ISH Sport have been irreplaceable. Communities need something to gravitate towards, or something to resist against. A community that is pulled together by common values, that is open and inviting to all who wish to participate, can be a powerful agent for change. A community that is pushed together by drawing borders, by closing itself to the world, can be damaging for those both inside and out. Either we are united by what we are, or isolated by what we are not. Creating something hopeful, compassionate and inclusive for a community to coalesce around is one of the biggest and most important task we have at ISH. In sport, when the whistle blows, all those factors that define the individual become components of the community, of the team. The tricky street footballer combines with the physical defender and the flashy striker to make a whole that is (hopefully) greater than the sum of its parts. As a player, and a coach, the learning experience of bringing this group together, and developing such a disparate collection of skills into a team, and a community, has been truly enriching.

After another long day of classes, you make your way off campus, weaving through loud groups of students, dodging a ball here and there. Wedged between Sara* and Adnan*, you turn your head left and right to keep up with the usual banter on theories and equations, smiling and nodding distractedly because this is the fourth time your phone has buzzed. As soon as you find yourself with enough room to pull your phone out of your pocket, you pause for a minute to read the messages from your young brother – he got home safely. A sigh of relief escapes your lips because nowadays, that four-mile journey between his school and home is no walk in the park. Leaving the house each morning is a risk because anything could happen and any day could be your last. You’re about to put your phone away and ask Sara how things are going with her new accommodation when BOOM! Then silence. Your ears are ringing, your eyes are closed.

Blink. Dust. There’s just so much dust. And then it dawns on you – we’ve just been hit!

This was Ibrahim’s reality as an academic in Syria, and while he escaped that mortar attack with minor scratches and ringing ears, his colleagues Sara and Adnan lost their lives. After several attempts to secure funding to further his studies, he had lost all hope of leaving Syria, until a friend encouraged him to reach out to the Council for At-Risk Academics (Cara), an organisation that specifically provides urgent assistance to academics in immediate danger; those forced into exile and many who choose to work in their countries despite serious risks. Cara is the leading

organisation of its type based in Europe and unique in its focus on helping those who are still in immediate danger, rather than already in exile, and providing 2- or 3-year award packages as standard.

All around the world, people start their academic careers with high hopes of learning, and of using their new knowledge to help others. For some, however, those dreams turn to nightmares, because of persecution, violence and conflict. Every year, Cara receives hundreds of requests for help from desperate academics, in immediate danger of arrest, injury or even death. In partnership with universities and research institutes, learned societies and other likeminded organisations, as well as many academics and other individuals, Cara offers practical and financial help, and assistance to reach a place where they can continue their work in safety. The support of 120 universities that make up the Cara Scholars at Risk UK Universities Network is central to the effective delivery of Cara’s work. Cara also works with a growing number of universities abroad, in Europe and beyond.

International Students House is proud to be partnering with cara by providing 5 faccommodation scholarships each year (costing in excess of £50K) to cara-supported academics pursuing their dreams in London. ISH LOVE STORIES

Gaurav Arora and Claire Martin It has been more than 50 years since ISH first opened its doors to international students. That’s more than five decades of students from all walks of life walking into the House with a bag and a dream to join a global community of talent. If walls could talk, they would share tales of friendships formed over breakfast, in the bar or along the corridors. Out of these friendships, some people have found love, and these are two of their stories: ‘I arrived in ISH (MTH specifically) in Feb of 2001 while studying for my Masters and became the student body president in 2002. I was also working part time at the GPS reception on the weekends and that’s where I met Claire in September 2002 when she came to London to study from France. As luck would have it, we met again in the MTH communal kitchen. I invited her and some other friends for an Indian meal cooked by me and that is where it all began. MTH was home away from home for a lot of us. MTH Kitchen and Uno Mundo (later renamed ISH Bar and the Thirsty Scholar) were the place to be, especially on Friday nights. We made a lot of common friends and became close over time. When we left ISH, we decided to move in together and eventually got married. Now we live in London with 2 lovely kids and still are close friends with a lot of ISH staff and fellow alumni. ISH defined us and gave us memories to cherish for a lifetime.’

Pooja and Monsoon Dutt ‘Pooja’s recollection of our first meeting is in the old ISH lifts but I am convinced that we met at the old bistro for breakfast where we were introduced by one of my closest friends. So much so that I wrote about our meeting in my diary. Considering I didn’t maintain a diary regularly it was perhaps a sign of things to come. During that first year we were more passing acquaintances and would mostly run into each other around the house.

It was only at the start of the second year that we started spending more time together, first bonding over an Indian movie. Over time our meetings became more planned than by accident especially on

Thursdays for the ever-popular Karaoke nights in the ISH bar. Before its current reincarnation as the Thirsty Scholar, ISH bar with its carpeted floor and upholstered armchairs felt like a living room after closing hours; a comforting place to relax and talk. And when hanging out socially (at various ISH events and receptions) was limited during exam times, we would meet in the old hall on the first floor (now meeting rooms) which quadrupled up as the study room, home of the travel club, internet cafe and common room! And there was always the option of escaping to the tranquillity of MTH overlooking Regent’s Park when we wanted to escape the hustle and bustle of GPS. ISH was and still is such a great place to meet people; we even introduced two of our dearest friends to each other - Pooja’s room-mate and my course-mate (happily married now). We look back fondly at our time in the house, even more so now.

/HRH Garden Party Musa Bwanali PR & Communications Officer

It’s hard to describe the excitement of an impending royal visit, even if it happens every year. The daily buzz in the House builds up into high-octane excitement whenever the Patron of ISH, HRH The Princess Royal is due to visit. For many of the students, this is a chance to meet a member of the royal family and the epitome of a truly British cultural experience. On the 2nd of May 2019, ISH celebrated 54 years of providing a diverse, inclusive and safe haven for international students while they pursue their dreams in London. The garden party was a lively and colourful occasion as students, alumni, staff and guests interacted over music and refreshments with several people decked out in national dress. Upon arrival, The Princess Royal took her time to meet and greet most of the students and guests, sharing small jokes on free breakfast and enquiring after post-study plans. The most memorable part of the afternoon was when one of the current scholars and Resident Advisors, Ibrahim Haider, shared a moving speech in appreciation of The Princess Royal and her commitment to education and charitable causes that have changed the lives of many young people. The event came to a close with all in attendance being treated to a short film that spoke to

the mission, vision and values of ISH, a reminder that the House remains as relevant today as it was when it opened its doors in 1965; to promote international friendship, tolerance, respect and understanding that goes beyond maps and borders.

SPOTLIGHT ON ALUMNI 10 QUESTIONS 1. What are some of your fondest memories from ISH? There are hundreds, it’s impossible to choose! Generally speaking, spending time with people from all around the world and opening each other’s mind, was something that shaped me. I did also enjoy the cinema and travel club activities, the gala nights and the themed parties and competitions. Enormous fun!

2. What do you miss about London?

Three things I miss the most: its parks, its cultural life and its multiculturalism. But I also miss other, odd things to some: the availability of veggie options, the city’s environmental awareness, the punctuality and organization, and, believe it or not, coming from a country that’s too hot for my taste, the weather!

3. Advice for someone just moving into ISH? Be open even if you’re shy, join ISH activities and enjoy every minute. You’ll be certain to make lifelong friendships and unforgettable memories!

4. How did your experience at ISH shape your journey after your studies?

My ISH experience enabled me to realize that, no matter where one comes from, we are all part of a worldwide community, within which we can aim high and dream big!

5. What have you been up to since you left ISH? Too many things! In short, after completing a PhD in Music, I began teaching at university level, while, at the same time, I have been active in the film-making and theatre industry as a composer and screenwriter. I’ve worked in productions all over Europe and the U.S. Currently, I am producing my first documentary feature, titled “The Stray Story: A Dogumentary”, that follows the inspirational work of dog rescue volunteers from around the globe. The aim is to raise awareness about the stray issue and inspire people to positive change.

6. What does your day-to-day look like?

I used to be a late-night person, but having a dog changed all that. Now I wake up early to take him for a walk, and after breakfast, we both go to my recording studio, where I work on whatever project until early evening (on a good day). Twice a week I teach at the university, and on Saturday nights I perform live music at a seaside venue. So, no two days are ever the same! Variety is the spice of life.

7. What do you like the most about your work?

It is fulfilling in every aspect. Meeting and joining forces with exciting, cultured and open-minded people continuously means growing and evolving both professionally and emotionally. More often than not, the people working together in a film or a play end up bonding like family; a family we get to choose. Every project is like a new lease of life and a unique experience, and our work reaching out to audiences, is a constant reminder that we are all connected. I am blessed to have found my calling.

8. One career highlight?

Winning an award for Best Composer at the Monaco International Film Festival back in 2008. That was the moment I knew I had to embrace the uncertainties of living as a freelance artist, and trust that hard work and devotion would pay off. And it did.

9. How do you unwind after a long, busy day at work?

Sometimes I’m so tired I just drop dead! Otherwise, a chilled walk, perhaps a movie, or dinner with friends, or just a quiet night at home.

10. Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

Doing what I’m doing, but in bigger, even more impacting productions. And by that, I don’t mean in terms of profit, but in terms of positive change. As artists we may not be able to change the world, but we can transform viewers – and having transformed them, they can then change the world.

Andreas Athansopoulos – Home Away from Home From the age of 5, Andreas Athanasopoulos has been calling International Students House his home. Andreas and his brother lived in a family flat in the Great Portland Street building with their mother, Maria, who was a student at the time. They often return for visits, particularly for the London Reunions every 3 years. Same person, same place, some 45 years later:

A story of migration, I Belong tells the journey of Magdalena who left Uruguay in 2006 at the age of 18 to go study in Europe, and finds herself working in refugee camps in West and Central Africa ten years later. In one of her trips back to her birth country, Magdalena finds out that her mother’s childhood friend was taken to Sweden as a refugee during the Uruguayan dictatorship four decades before.

Magdalena seeks to reunite them while at the same time facing an inner conflict of having to choose between either remaining abroad for good or going back home. As Magdalena searches for her place in-between two worlds, she is confronted with social stereotypes and different perceptions of the notion of privilege embedded in various countries, which make her reflect on her own upbringing in the Uruguayan society.

I Belong analyses the quest that “citizens of the world” tend to face while travelling through different continents, trying to find themselves, seeking what one desires the most: the feeling of belonging.

1. What are some of your fondest memories from ISH? In 2008 I was looking for nice accommodation in London. I went to ISH to see what they can offer and when I first arrived, I fell in love with the location, the accommodation, and the whole organisation. My dream was to live at ISH and my dream came true a few months later.

Something I really liked at ISH was that I had the opportunity to work with the staff organising events, and that I was able to meet people from all around the world. As soon as I arrived at ISH I started working in the bar with Gauthier and then a year later I was working at the reception desk.

It was great living on the second floor of GPS and working on the first floor! A lot of people had to

commute to reach their workplace, I just had to take the lift. I was so grateful for that.

2. What do you miss about London?

I miss everything about London: its positive energy, its nightlife, its art, its architecture, its fashion, its afternoon tea, its walks at Great Portland Street, its carrot cake and its cheese and onion sandwiches. Despite leaving London 9 years ago, I still feel like a Londoner.

3. Advice for someone just moving into ISH? Enjoy it fully because you are going to meet the greatest people who will remain your friends forever.

4. How did your experience at ISH shape your

journey after your studies?

During my time at ISH I received a lot of great work experience including an internship in Regent’s Park with the Prince’s Trust, which was partnered with ISH at the time. Being at ISH helped me become very confident because being in the core of the city I was able to meet very interesting people with great experience and a strong academic background. ISH also improved my language skills because English is not my mother tongue and the experience at ISH was always a good opportunity to practice.

Having friends at ISH is like having an extended family, and I have kept in touch with many people especially the staff. I always enjoy coming back for visits and for special events.

8. One career highlight?

In 2008, I was an intern in the government office at the United Nations in New York. It was my first work experience, in an international organisation, in a fabulous city. It was so interesting to be part of the government and share the aim of improving the world. I met friends there that are my friends forever and I still visit with them on my travels. This was during the summer right before I arrived at ISH, so that was a very exciting year for me!

5. What have you been up to since you left ISH? I left ISH in 2010, and two years later I took part in my first local election and I became Deputy Mayor in my constituency. I also currently work for an international NGO called the International Rescue Committee, which was set up by Albert Einstein to help refugees all around the world. I particularly enjoy the fact that I’m able to work on both a local and international level, and that I am able to work with organisations where my personal values align with their mission.

6. What does your day-to-day look like?

Serving my constituents and trying to make this world a better place through helping residents with

You Need More Than A Degree There’s no denying it - the strategy for penetrating the competitive labour market is changing. While a good qualification from a reputable institution may get your foot in the door, you will need more than a generic CV or Resume to secure your seat at the table. We spoke with Kurt Pertsch, ISH Alum (1995) and Business Manager at Deutsche Bank, about post-graduation employment and tips to jump-start or advance your career path.

Internships and Work Placements Internships and apprenticeships provide many opportunities to demonstrate your suitability to a potential employer while developing career-relevant skills. “I work for a large international bank and have been working in banking for most of my career”, explains Kurt, who started his career through a work experience programme.

“I entered initially as part of a German apprenticeship style study-work degree.

You spend half the time working and the other half earning a Bachelor degree.” Most

companies now use internships as a recruitment tool for more permanent positions, and work placements can be an efficient way of balancing studies with professional employment. Paid or unpaid, an internship is essentially the first step into a professional career as it gives you the reallife experience of the job. “[What helped with the transition to work from study] was the fact that I already had experience as part of the programme.

Try and get experience where you can is the key message.”

An internship also often provides access to events where you will interact and network with professionals who are potential future referees, mentors or employers. “Networking is very important, but it is also fun.” Kurt explains. He stresses the importance of continuously developing your personal links, as you never know where your connections will lead you. “Internal networking is key [too] - so once in a job, make sure you build a network in the company.”

Volunteering Many recruiters today consider work experience as an essential requirement in addition to academic qualifications. Engaging in some voluntary work before, during or soon after your studies (as you wait for responses to your applications) is a chance to gain some practical experience while building on your work experience. Kurt emphasises that volunteering also gives you the time to develop your skills and acquire new ones, primarily confidence and communication skills. When looking for new hires, Kurt says that “Evidence of volunteer roles and knowledge generally helps differentiate candidates with an otherwise similar background.”

In addition, demonstrable examples of teamwork is especially fundamental and valuable to most potential employers.

Whether you decide to dedicate your service to a cause that has no direct link to your chosen sector or you find a position in an organisation you would love to work for, volunteering presents an

opportunity for networking which could help you land a permanent job in the future.

Develop Marketable Skills In addition to certified technical skills, recruiters today are looking for candidates with abilities that make them stand out. When discussing valuable skill sets, Kurt advises using your time as a student to build a broad foundation of knowledge and experience and not just focusing on narrow obvious skills. There is a strong advantage in having essential, technical skills and a global outlook. However, in order to leverage yourself in a competitive job market, you will also need a set of soft skills.

This list compiled by the U.S. Secretary of Labor and the Commission on Achieving Necessary Skills (SCANS) highlights some of the key foundation skills and basic workplace competencies that are critical for employment:

Continuous Skill Development Many people are under the impression that graduating from a university means waving goodbye to reading, exams, and assessments.

Unfortunately, today’s workplace can be an equally intense and competitive learning environment that demands continuous skills development. New technology, legislation and changing customer demand may shift an organization’s goals and needs which has implications for the staff. Before you get a new job, look into how you can improve your skills as this will heighten your employability levels. Once you have secured that job, continue to upskill and expand your knowledge through learning a new language, taking on a short course, or joining and engaging with professional associations. The more skills you have to offer, the better your CV will be when compared to someone who just relies on their university qualifications. In addition, continuing to add to your extracurricular and volunteer experience is an important part of keeping your CV current while highlighting continuous personal development. “[In addition to bolstering your CV], it is just good to do something different from your everyday work and also good to meet people you would not normally interact with.”

These are some useful sites for personal development: Lynda.com is a leading online learning platform that helps people learn business, software, technology, and creative skills to achieve personal and professional goals. Usually, they offer a free trial for LinkedIn members (another reason to set up a LinkedIn account) and they have a wide range of video courses in various topics.

Udemy.com is a global marketplace for mastering new skills by learning from an extensive library of over 45,000 courses taught by expert instructors.

It’s a learning marketplace where instructors from different fields create lessons on a diverse array of topics – from programming to woodworking skills to publishing your book.

Coursera.com is a wonderful resource for learning, reviewing, and discussing academia with lessons

by top instructors from the world’s best universities and educational institutions. They have recorded video lectures, auto-graded and peer-reviewed assignments, and community discussion forums.

Create a Professional Online Profile In 2020, your digital identity is just as important as your CV or resume as most recruiters now conduct a web search of your name when considering candidates for a job. ‘I’m already on Facebook, Instagram and very active on Twitter.’ Great!

But let’s talk about LinkedIn. The platform has developed into one of the most reliable vehicles for finding networks, internships and job prospects, and if you haven’t already created one, your LinkedIn profile is more important now than ever.

Employers actively use this platform to source candidates, with some applications accepting a summary of your profile as a CV so ensure that it is comprehensive and up to date. Use LinkedIn to engage with other professionals in your field of interest, sharing useful content and engaging with

what others post. The more active you are and the wider your network, the greater your visibility. Don’t forget to join online networks and groups that are focussed on your professional interests or set up by your institution, and reach out to its members.

Networking doesn’t necessarily have to be in person!

Hopefully, these few pointers help you prepare for your near future and encourage you to continue pursuing your career path. As a former ISH resident, Kurt enjoys giving back to current students as a regular volunteer at ISH’s annual career programme hosted with alumni. His final advice to students before embarking on your career? “Enjoy ISH and all it has to offer and ensure you build some lifelong friendships along the way - like I have.”

50 YEARS OF WOMEN AT ISH ISH.ORG.UK/ALUMNI

Did you know that when ISH opened it was only men that were allowed to live here? Well this year we are celebrating 50 years since women too were invited to come and live at ISH. Up until then women were welcome as Club members during the day but had to be off the premises by 11 pm along with all other visitors.

What difference has it made to those women and to the men who lived here too? We would very much like to hear from you. What is happening in your lives now? Let us know and share your journey with your fellow alumni – photos would be nice too.

Here are the memories of one of the first women to live at ISH, Sue Ryder (neé Remmer).

“It was the first Saturday of September 1970 and along with my parents we drove from a small village in Gloucestershire into the centre of London to The International Students House, Park Crescent, W.I. My home for the next few years. At that time, I wasn’t to know I was to be one of the first women to actually be moving in. (I knew that until then it had been men only!)

It was with trepidation I walked along the empty, silent corridor of the third floor to my room, which turned out to be at the very end! Room 315. Eventually my parents left and there I was in a three-bedded room all by myself overlooking Great Portland Street and the Marylebone Road. That same weekend Shirin Aumeeruddy and Roz Horwood-Smart moved in (there may have been others).

During the following weeks Aba and Jean, my two new room-mates joined me. I’m pleased to say we got on very well. Opposite us Miss Grindle, the lady employed to keep an eye on us girls, lived in her own small flat. No chance of us getting up to anything with her there! Eventually more females moved in filling the rooms of the two floors which had been allocated to us.

For us girls it didn’t seem strange but for the boys/men who had been living there beforehand I felt some were pleased to have ladies ‘living with them’ whilst others definitely weren’t (* see below). A few of them thought it amusing to tell us they’d come from a certain country when they obviously hadn’t or give us names which

weren’t theirs e.g. Joe Caplin told me his name was Joe Bugner - a boxer, but as I’d never heard of him that ‘joke’ fell flat.

During my time at the house I was voted onto the student committee; joined the various events that were held e.g. the International Fayres; met a number of famous people at The Goats Evenings (often having been invited to dine with them beforehand) and felt honoured to have met The Queen Mother on several occasions especially when during the 1990 Reunion (twenty years after females had moved into the house) besides once again being introduced I’d been invited (along with seven others) to actually sit at her table during the afternoon tea in Park Crescent Gardens.

with making friends with other students from all over the world and everything that was provided for us there – bar, clubs, games rooms, social events, library, coffee bar, mini market etc. etc. The staff were always friendly and helpful especially Chris Paton and Bill Murray, both of whom I kept in touch with until their deaths.

Hopefully everyone enjoys their student days but for me it was extra special because of living at the house, I thoroughly enjoyed my time there, friendships with both sexes were made, some of whom after nearly fifty years I still keep in touch with today. I wouldn’t have missed living at I.S.H. for the world!”

Projects for Peace provides grants to ‘support and encourage today’s motivated youth to create and test their own ideas for building peace’. For over 10 years ISH has been very active in promoting the programme to students and supporting them through the application process. Over a dozen ISH applicants have been successful and undertaken peace projects across the world; from Rwanda to Poland. Here we remember the first of an amazing list of inspirational peace projects created and delivered by ISH residents.

The city of Warsaw was devastated by bombs during World War II, and some still remember the sight of the bombs dropping from the air. Rain of Poems over Warsaw was a project that replicated things falling from the sky over Warsaw, but, for one evening during the summer of 2009, the things falling from the sky were poems written

by Chilean and Polish contemporary poets and printed in Spanish and Polish on bookmarks.

Conceived by Chilean ISH Schoalrship student Christóbal Bianchi, the project commemorated the 70th anniversary of the outbreak of World War II and the 65th anniversary of the Warsaw uprising.

Christóbal worked with officials in Warsaw on the logistics of the event, including his helicopter flight over the city and considerable publicity before, during, and after the event, all underwritten by the city of Warsaw.

The poem bookmarks were dropped over Old Town, Castle Square, and St. Anne’s Church, creating a swirling mass of floating paper. Within minutes, the exuberant crowd picked up every one of the bookmarks, remarkably leaving no litter. While thousands of people now have the bookmarks, the lasting impression will be the sight of the poems raining from the sky—a peaceful and hopeful sight to replace images of bombs of another time.

The Bombing of Poems has taken place in cities that have experienced aerial bombing during military confrontations and have since been carried out in Santiago de Chile, Gernika, Dubrovnik, Warsaw, Berlin and London. Christóbal explains “The bombing of poems is a symbolic intervention, and as such makes references to other acts of air bombardment - indiscriminate death raining from the sky – and in this way confirms the brutality of total war.

The use of such bombing oscillates between being proscribed by international treaty to being used for ‘just war’, as well as for pedagogical purposes in which the waging of war against civilians becomes legitimate” Christóbal went on to Goldsmiths to complete a research project related to his thirteen years of working with poetry in public spaces as well as experimenting with publishing through different technologies. He has presented the Bombing of Poems and his subsequent research at cities and institutions around the world.

1.What are some of your fondest memories from ISH? My most memorable moments were eating with ISH residents in the Thirsty Scholar or the Common Room and the mind-blowing conversations we had on different topics such as music, travels, hobbies, and academics. Also, I would always cherish my memories of ISH events, especially the visit by HRH The Princess Royal and the 2017 Christmas dinner which were really fun and astounding.

2.What do you miss about London?

I really miss ISH, Regent’s Park and London’s global chain of restaurants.

3.Advice for someone just moving into ISH? Make great friends and hang out with them regularly.

Join the travel club. Participate in ISH events as much as possible. Most importantly, never miss ISH garden parties!

4.How did your experience at ISH shape your journey after your studies?

My time at ISH was really instrumental in building both personal and professional skills. It enabled me to develop strong interpersonal skills and quickly connect with people from different backgrounds. This has enabled me to succeed in my current job.

5.What have you been up to since you left ISH? Immediately after leaving London, I joined Nile University of Nigeria, Abuja, as an Assistant Lecturer in Economics, where I have been involved in teaching economics to undergraduates. In addition, I work as the Assistant Director of the Centre for Corporate Relations, where I help in developing and maintaining strategic partnerships between the University and businesses, donors, civil society, and other research institutes. For my research, I am currently carrying out a project analysing the feasibility of different support mechanisms for clean energy transition in Nigeria. The objective is to provide a useful policy guidance and new insights on which instruments are likely to work best for Nigeria.

6.What does your day-to-day look like?

On a weekday, I wake up around 6:30 am. I do my morning jogging before having breakfast. I go to work at 9:00 am, where I head straight to teach an early morning class or just sit in the office to work. I drink several cups of tea during the day. Back home, I would have dinner, call my girlfriend and family, and eventually collapse in my bed. During weekends, I like to watch movies, swim, and read books outdoors.

7.What do you like the most about your work?

I love the fact that I’m always learning and improving myself through teaching and research. I also love interacting with many students and staff from different backgrounds. It makes me feel at ISH! 8.One career highlight?

Going out of your comfort zone and never being afraid of aiming for top organisations in your field.

9.How do you unwind after a long, busy day at work?

I watch movies or call my girlfriend who lives in a different city.

10.Where do you see yourself in the next five years?

I want to complete my PhD and make progress in my academic career. I would like to make profound impacts in the Nigerian energy sector and contribute to knowledge through research and collaboration with different stakeholders. Lastly, I want to be aggressively involved in campaigning for a rapid transition to a green economy and climate justice through active climate advocacy and community work.
