IST

The Internationalist IST Yearbook takes is core design from the theme of the Chinese Zodiac and incorporates this with the fundamental principles and values at the heart of IST. WORKING. ACTING. LEARNING. TOGETHER Much of Chinese philosophy is built around the belief in the five elements and their abilities to interact with and create relationships between natural phenomena. The five elements have been part of Chinese culture almost from the beginning.

Interestingly, few people outside the Asian world understand the importance of the five elements, especially how each relates to the workings of the Chinese Zodiac.

The five elements of wood, fire, Earth, metal and water are associated with five major planets in the Solar System: Jupiter, Mars, Saturn, Venus and Mercury. The five elements are naturally-occurring phenomena and they’re believed to have both a generating and an overcoming influence on one another. For example, wood generates fire, water generates wood, water overcomes fire, fire overcomes metal, etc.

Along with these generating and overcoming forces, the five elements of the Chinese Zodiac are also correlated with direction, color, season, body parts, tastes, and senses. Wood, for example correlates to the direction East, the season of Spring, the color blue or green, the taste of sour, the sense of sight, and the body parts gall bladder, liver and ring finger. The other four elements likewise have their own correlations.

The characteristics of the five elements, metal, wood, fire, water and Earth, impact the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac by assigning different characteristics to the animals. Since the twelve animals of the Chinese Zodiac actually represent a period of time, in this case a year (the 12 branches), assigning one of the five elements to each of the twelve years (12 branches) actually creates 60 different combinations. Rather than operating in 12-year cycles, the Chinese Zodiac is actually based on a system of 60-year cycles.

“Cocka-doodle-doooo!” and a great big hello to you all from me, the Little Red Rooster! Did you know that I’ve been running backwards and forwards across the road all of this past year like a headless Chicken-Lickin’ in search of a bucket of KFC? It’s no cock and bull story; publications like this are rarer than hens’ teeth, only coming around every 12 years, and I’ve been stuck in a chicken run with my wings clipped waiting for the Sunday roast! But the sun has finally risen on the Year of the Rooster and I’m free at last to take you scratching through the pages of THE INTERNATIONALISTIST yearbook!

It’s no yoke that the sunny side of the egg was definitely up and shining in 2016-17 and we certainly had a year over which all of our little chicks can shake a tail feather. From start to finish 2016-17 was poultry in motion, so start flapping your wings and let’s take a gander at the golden eggs that were laid and scrambled to make our annual IST omelet!

IST DIRECTOR - MR STEVE MOODY Dear IST Community Members and Friends It is my pleasure to welcome and introduce you to the 2016-17 edition of IST’s annual yearbook THE INTERNATIONALIST. As always I know that you will enjoy this kaleidoscopic review of the school year here at IST, our home in China.

In many ways our annual yearbook and our school reflect the many qualities that we all love about our wonderfully fascinating host country, China. Our school, like China, is a rich and colourful tapestry of intercultural and international experiences: it is a charming mix of the new and the old, the traditional and the contemporary; it is an exciting and oftentimes challenging melting pot of ideas, beliefs, and values; and it is a warm and welcoming home to us all.

As always, it is the partnership between school, family, and local community that makes our school such a wonderful environment in which students and adults alike are able to learn and grow. This year has been no exception with unflagging support from our fantastic parents and dedicated PFO and Board of Governors, and from our incredible students, faculty and host country staff. Thank you all for your fabulous contributions and assistance in ensuring that IST remains Tianjin’s school of choice where students come first.

This publication comes to you as a result of a huge effort on the part of many members of our community, but most especially from our three dedicated, energetic and creative yearbook committee members, Amrita Singh, Frances Tschoepel, and Lu Lu. Thank you ladies, and congratulations to all involved!

As you look through the pages of this superb publication, be sure to take a moment or two to reflect upon what it is that makes our school such a special home for us here in China. Who is Listening offers a great opportunity for secondary and Pre-K students to build relationships with each other. Every Wednesday, members met with little kids in the library and choose interesting books to read with them.

The International Award Action Group helps students who are completing the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award a place to discuss their IA projects.

The Green Team has focused on making IST a greener place!

Every week they collect recycling from around the school.

Service Circus members have performed their spectacular circus skills in front of a variety of delighted audiences!

IST Sunshine is dedicated to making IST a fun place to learn for students, by welcoming new students and bidding farewell to those who are leaving.

Don't Forget Alzheimer's is dedicated to raising awareness amongst the IST community about the fatalities of Alzheimer's disease.

They are also raising money to contribute to the research facility in the Alzheimer's Association in hopes of find a cure for this disease.

Remember the Deaf focuses on building up a partnership between our school and the Deaf School of Tianjin.

Let's Play is an action group that focuses on creating a connection between the elementary school and the secondary school. They are able to do this by providing role models for the nursery students, and by helping them with a variety of tasks, or by playing with them.

40

MYP Action Groups STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) has given MYP students a great opportunity to mentor students in grades three to five. STEM members have engaged the elementary students in fun activities and science experiments!

Watch This Space has focused on various types of art including drawing, painting, sculpting and creating.

ADF (Aerobics, Dance, and Fitness) strives to bring entertainment to the IST community and promote the importance of staying fit.

Fun Education for K planned and organized activities for the Kindergarten students.

Every month, they had four groups leading their own activities teaching different Kindergarten students about Science, Math and Technology.

Santa 365 has brought cheer to elementary school students this year.

For example, they have delivered cards to elementary school students to celebrate birthdays, Christmas, etc.

VERY YEAR BRINGS AN EXCITING ARRAY OF DRAMATIC EXPERIENCES FOR STUDENTS STUDYING DRAMA IN THE MIDDLE YEARS PROGRAMME. WHILE EACH UNIT IS LINKED TO CREATE A DEVELOPMENTAL PROGRAM, UNIQUE LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND. MYP DRAMA IS BASED AROUND THEATRE TRADITIONS SUCH AS BRITISH PANTOMIME, PEKING OPERA, MELODRAMA, REALISM AND GREEK THEATRE. THIS SERVES AS AN INTRODUCTION TO THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PERFORMANCE TECHNIQUES THAT MAKE UP THIS DIVERSE ARTS FORM. THERE IS ALSO AN EMPHASIS ON INFLUENTIAL AND FAMOUS DRAMA PRACTITIONERS IN THE UPPER MYP WITH GRADE 10 WORKING WITH THE TECHNIQUES OF STANISLAVSKY AND THE GRADE 10S EXPLORING THE THEORIES AND TECHNIQUES OF THE GERMAN DIRECTOR, PLAYWRIGHT, DIRECTOR AND POET - BRECHT. AS THIS GOES TO PRINT SEVERAL CLASSES WOULD HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO SEE THE GRADE 10 BRECHTIAN VERSION OF THE THREE LITTLE PIGS...CERTAINLY NOT THE VERSION YOU GREW UP WITH.

HIS YEAR IT IS WITH GREAT SADNESS BUT ALSO FONDNESS THAT WE LOOK BACK ON ALL THE GREAT MOMENTS THAT CAME FROM THE FIRST EVER GRADE 12 THEATRE CLASS. THEY DAZZLED AUDIENCES WITH EXCITING AND CHALLENGING SOLO PERFORMANCE WORK THAT ENCOMPASSED MOVEMENT PIECES INFLUENCED BY JACQUES LECOQ, THOUGHT PROVOKING PIECES GUIDED BY THE THEORIES OF ARTAUD, SHAKESPEAREAN CLASSICS DELIVERED WITH CICELY BERRY’S VOCAL COACHING THEORIES AND A REALISM PERFORMANCE SHAPED BY THE STANISLAVSKI SYSTEM. SOME GRADE 8 AND 6 STUDENTS WERE BOTH ENTERTAINED AND EDUCATED WHEN THE GRADE 12 THEATRE CLASS PRESENTED THEIR RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS ABOUT PERFORMANCE STYLES OR THEATRE TRADITIONS FROM VARYING CULTURES. FROM THE COMFORT OF THE BLACK BOX WE TRAVELLED TO INDIA TO EXPERIENCE KATHAKALI DANCE-DRAMA AND THEN CAME BACK TO CHINA TO SEE PEKING OPERA HAND GESTURES AND THEN BACK TO BLIGHTY OF ENGLAND TO EXPERIENCE VICTORIAN MELODRAMA AND BRITISH PANTOMIME BEFORE SKIPPING ACROSS TO ITALY TO EXPERIENCE COMMEDIA DELL ‘ARTE. THESE STUDENTS WORKED AS CREATORS, DIRECTORS, DESIGNERS AND PERFORMERS AND THEY PUSHED THEIR CREATIVE BOUNDARIES, PARTICULARLY THROUGH THEIR DIRECTOR’S NOTEBOOK, WHERE THEY CREATED A VISION TO TAKE A PLAY FROM PAGE TO STAGE. AT THIS IS BEING WRITTEN, THEY ARE ABOUT TO LAUNCH THEIR LAST EVER PERFORMANCE AS A GROUP. THIS WILL BE THE PINNACLE OF EVERYTHING THEY HAVE ACHIEVED THESE PAST TWO YEARS AND FOR THOSE WHO ARE LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE PART OF AUDIENCE....SAVOUR THE MOMENT. THIS QUALITY OF PERFORMANCE USUALLY COMES WITH A HEFTY PRICE TAG. HOW LUCKY ARE WE TO HAVE TALENT LIKE THIS? I AM SURE YOU JOIN ME IN WISING THEM WELL WHEREVER LIFE MAY TAKE THEM AND HOPE THAT THEY LOOK BACK ON THIS SPECIAL TIME WITH GREAT PRIDE AND QUITE FRANKLY AMAZEMENT, AT WHAT THEY HAVE BEEN ABLE TO ACHIEVE TOGETHER.

AS INDIVIDUALS WE FORM SOCIETIES, SO OUR IDENTITIES, CULTURES AND UNDERSTANDING OF THE ROLE OF HISTORY, GEOGRAPHY AND ECONOMICS ARE OF VALUE AND DIRECT RELEVANCE TO OUR LEARNING BOTH NOW AND IN THE FUTURE. The daily interactions and rich learning experiences in these yearbook pages are evidence of the strong IST spirit that exists both within, and beyond, the school campus. There are ample examples showing how our students, staff and parents try hard every day to live up to the IST philosophy.

Students – do you find that a school year feels like it lasts forever? Grown ups – do you feel that time flies faster with each passing year? Pause for a moment to consider that for all our IST students, and for some of our parents and staff, the 20th Century is now a distant history. It is just about one more year until all our students will have been born in the 21st Century. In an era of incredible technological change, connection and friendship have never been more important.

Students, families and staff have formed many bonds of friendship and strengthened connections. ELEMENTARY STUDENT COUNCIL This year, the Elementary Student Council has been very busy. Each Monday, they meet as a team to discuss what they need to do re upcoming events and how they can support their friends. They believe that they can help Elementary students have a happier time at school by creating some fun events.

The students have helped to run Halloween, Dance Away, Movies afternoons and each Friday they are ready to sell Ice creams and in winter Hot Chocolate. They have also been involved in speaking with the PFO to help support students in getting more sports equipment.

SECONDARY PRINCIPAL-MICHAEL CONWAY I have been working, learning and acting together with the students and faculty at IST since 2003 when I started as a Chinese teacher, and then as a Humanities, History and TOK teacher: not to mention being a Diploma Coordinator for a few years. But this year’s edition of the Internationalist is a significant one for me as it is the first time I have been privileged to address the Secondary school as Principal. For me, life at IST has been one of constant change and challenge. And this is a book about change and challenge because schools are incredible places where change is encouraged and challenges celebrated. Working, learning and acting together means that we will face many setbacks along the way and that we will undoubtedly make many mistakes and wish we had taken different routes in our journey. This is another wonderful aspect of life in a school because schools are a place where mistakes are recognized, discussed, understood and revised with renewed energy and effort.

In the pages of the Internationalist you will see photos of students, teachers and parents enjoying their school life, celebrating community activities, putting on amazing shows, playing sports, teaching outstanding lessons and sharing of themselves. What you will likely not see however, is the sheer amount of mistakes, errors, trials and attempts that were less successful. And yet, none of these are less important to the making of a great school.

This book serves as a record of our success and to remind us privately of all of the hard work, the first-secondand third drafts, long days, frustrated conversations and exhausting hours that it takes to make a great school and, hopefully, to build a meaningful life that allows us to contribute to the world in a positive and lasting way.

Some of the students in these pages have already left our community and yet, they are always here, part of our record, part of the archive of what we do to build great and exciting lives: and we miss each one of them dearly. Other students can trace their lives back for many years through these pages and can recall all of the fond memories that the Internationalist inspires: an we hope that they will long be a part of our community.

I sincerely hope that you each take time to review this book and not only look at the pictures, but to appreciate that this is a product of tremendous community spirit and effort, and that it is a reflection of everything that makes IST such an amazing and wonderful place to work, learn and act together, for our common future.

There are things you would not believe to exist outside of fiction.

Like that week in school where everyday has a theme, and you have to dress up according to it? Not a thing right? Right?

It is a thing, it exists outside of sitcoms and it existed in this school, together with a lot of other events, like that week dedicated to reading, or a school musical, something that I thought just had to be an invention of petty comedy writers wanting to embarrass their teenage character. It’s not and I had quite a cultural shock when I found out here at IST. I loved the dressing up and the reading part, but what? Why? Why is this school so cliché sitcom American? Because that’s where I saw all this before and thought it was sweet, but far too unrealistic.

And now I graduated from this school and have to learn how to spell Bachekloriat? Becceloriat? In IB? – The B. So I don’t know how this will go on, but wow, starting in this school was such a confusing experience.

Transferring to IST in grade 8 was challenging. New language, new friends, new environment haunted me at first, but the friendly atmosphere that surrounded me at IST, made me who I am now. I made some of my best friends here, especially in my senior year.

Even in the future, we will be separated across continents and oceans, I have a feeling that we will stay in contact for life.

I came to the IST in 2013, mid-year of the second semester of grade 8. It was a sudden decision because I never expected to go to other countries for my school life. I did not want to have new environment since I thought I was having great time with my local friends.

However, I think it will be the best choice of my life to come to the IST. Albeit it was hard for me to adapt at international school life, I have had a great four years with help from good friends.

I have loved toys and models since I was young. IST gave me the environment to nurture my hobby and my major in college. It is with the spare time I get in IST that I could spend a lot of time on making GUNDAM models; it is with PP that I found my interest in electromagnetism. And now I’m heading to become an electrical engineer at university. I’d like to spend the last moment thanking my friends and IST for everything in high school.

I think I enjoyed participating various events at IST. I went to Beijing for Week Without Walls last year. At that time, I had funny experiences by sharing a room with Osama and Kevin, who are from countries other than South Korea. Besides, I made new friends from other schools by participating in CISSMUN. It is really hard to choose one most favorite experience at IST. I would say 2015 Basketball ACAMIS tournament in Guangzhou. I showed my ability as much as possible, and I could receive all-star player medal.

When I was younger, I want to be involved in any occupation of designing something. I liked to draw some cartoons, and my personal project was about that. However, after I began taking biology course, I found what I am interested in. Since certain areas of biology course gave me such confidence and interest, I want to work on researching a field of biomedical science.

It was such an honor for me to be given an opportunity to spend my last two years of high school at IST. IST has brought me so many incredible things, including supportive teachers, encouraging friends, excellent facilities, and a great (but painful) internal program. Though, it is reasonable to admit that two years at IST has not only been filled with joy and laughter, yet at the end all the pains, stresses, endless Managebac notifications, have became part of my memories.

On the other hand, one of the most memorable and unforgettable memories of two years was the first and last Week Without Walls in Gufupu in G11, which was my first WWW attendance. It was so special, because it gave me opportunities to know lots of people from my grade, including the ones that I would have hardly spoken to if we didn’t have a chance. Specially doing a series of required teamwork activities, such as teaching local Chinese children English, reconstruction of a road, 7 hours of bus rides, KTV, and so many more. I still haven’t discovered what I exactly want to be in the future, however, what’s for sure is that I will definitely utilize all the opportunities and education that I was given at IST.

The first time I moved from my home was in 2013 when I was 14 years old. I was so nervous when I flew the first time in my life from Germany all the way to China. I did not know what to expect when I moved to Tianjin. Especially going to a new school was a huge challenge. However, it was different to what I had expected.

I experienced a warm welcome from IST and immediately found new friends in a new community. I got a lot of support while learning that after 6 months I was fluent in English. The best memories I had were Week Without Walls trips, going somewhere in China for one week each year. I did not only learn about the Chinese culture but also found new best friends and connected with many friends.

It’s been three years since I came to IST. This is a community with various cultures and people. On the first day I came to IST, I wasn’t sure how my future was going to be like. Now I’m here ready to go through the next stage. Teachers and students are very friendly to each other, if you respect them the same way in return. Either good or bad, these memories are my treasure, and will help me to become a better person. Without these I wouldn’t be able to overcome all the obstacles by myself. Thank you for bringing me so much joy IST.

When I was a young child I always wanted to be a pilot. My mum and me always wanted to go to the Maldives but we never really had the opportunity to go. I’ve decided I wanted to become a pilot to fly my mum and me to our dream holiday destination. Even today we still have that dream, only my perceptions of my future job have changed a little. Now I want to become something that has to do with Communication, perhaps Politics. Throughout my time at IST I developed an interest for global issues, conflicts and society. I believe I want to do something regarding these topics.

I came to IST in September 2015 with a literal explosion that blew up my house. The first impression of the school was ‘Red.’ So far, the best experience I had in school is watching Georg rap in German during Open Stage.

I wanted to be a chemist and a graphic novel artist when I was younger. At the moment, I want to be a free elf or Sherlock Holmes.

Or both. I could make video games or everything else I have on my list. I am thankful that I am privileged enough to receive a quality education in a school where I was able to try many of the things I wanted to do. I express my uttermost gratitude to those who supported me through my lowest.

Since August 2014, I have joined the IST community. The first impression I had on such a new environment was shock and excitement. I was shocked by how free my classmates are at school, and I was excited to hang out with them, who are now my best friends.

It was fun to have secondary school life with them.

I came to IST at the beginning of Grade 7. Learning a new language, meeting new friends and teachers made it very difficult for me adjust to new environment. As the time passed, when I started getting closer to people, I started to enjoy staying in all those fun activities in IST.

Not only did I like various school activities such as MUN and WWW, but I mostly enjoyed daily school life with those friends. Written assignments and internal assessments, the real devil-like part of the IB, made my life tougher and let me realize how hard the life is.

I couldn’t forget how much my friends and I swore about it. But, it actually helped us not to give up our academic lives.

The most memorable experiences in IST were Week Without Walls, MUN, and ACAMIS. The activities outside of school allowed me to get closer with friends, travel around China, and rest from work. I liked drawing since I was young, I will continue to study art in university. IST provided me a good environment to keep my interest and helped me to improve my skills.

When I was young, I wanted to be a policeman, who could contribute to the safety of society. As I studied the course and thought more about my future deeply, however, I now want to work in the field of computer science. I know my IB career would help me to be successful in that area.

I am very thankful for everyone who helped me out and I will miss this school. I especially thank my friends and teachers. I know you will know it is you even if I don’t mention your name. :P

Seven and half years at IST have been a wonderful experience that I will never forget in my life. I still remember my first day of school as if it was yesterday, and the fact that I soon will graduate simply makes me speechless. Amazing friends, teachers and parents I met from the school made my life in here meaningful and enjoyable.

Also, going to Week Without Walls from grade 6 to 11, attending my first MUN conference, getting my first role in the school musical, and so many other precious memories made at IST will forever remain inside me.

As a little kid, I wanted to become a diplomat. However, after my experiences in IST, I am now left with more serious, but certainly joyful questions about what I want to be in the future. What I do know for sure is that no matter what the circumstances are, I will always have full support and love of the school and friends. IST will be missed.

I came to IST when I was in grade 6. On the day that I first came to IST, I was so nervous and confused. Also, I had never seen that many foreigners and I couldn’t understand anything. As I got more used to study at IST, I could adapt to the new environment and focus on studying English as well. One of my favorite memories of IST is when I went to Beijing for MUN. Through that experience, I learned how the United Nations works by having several conferences. When I was a young child, I wanted to be an artist, singer, and so on. As time passes, now I would like to study public administration, business administration and sociology.

When I was young, I wanted to become a president who could change the world. I came to IST at the end of grade 9. The first day of school was the most memorable time in my life. I talked with Mr. Taylor, which was my first time talking to foreigners. To be honest, I was concerned a lot about moving to IST, due to the language problem. However, my friends and teachers helped me out a lot to overcome this difficulty. Although, I have stayed at IST only for three years, I learned many things including true love, respecting others, getting rid of pressures and so on. One of the funniest memories at IST is the Grade 10 football ACAMIS tournament at Hong Kong.

The weather was really hot and humid, but the tournament was fun and memorable. In addition, we went out for dinner, but we couldn’t meet the appointment time, I remember Mr. Bermudez was really angry at that time. Even though Mr. Bermudez was angry, I was still so happy that school provided an opportunity for me to visit Hong Kong as one of the players.

After I graduate IST, I would like to study either Finance or Law in Hong Kong. I believe that I could achieve success in either one of these programs and also change the world in that field.

I came to IST in grade two. At the time, I was very shy and I couldn’t speak much English, but IST has always been a very welcoming place, and I am glad that I didn’t have to say goodbye to IST until my graduation.

Spending more than half my life going to IST, IST is a very special place to me, for all the people I got to meet here and the memories I share with them. I loved going to all the annual Week Without Walls trips, especially the grade 11 one.

When I was young, I wanted to become a scientist. But as I grew up, my dream changed to becoming an engineer that deals with machines, robots or electronics. Now, I hope to major in computer science in college and see where it will lead me in achieving my dreams and ideals. I hope to major in computer science because it’s a study with so many areas of applications and because I believe it can bring wonders into the world.

Since I was young, I wanted to become Harry Potter. My mom would always tell me; one day you will go to Hogwarts. I came to IST in Grade 6 like a movie. It was the place I was ever dreaming of. For the past 6 years, IST has always been my Hogwarts with awesome memories and incredible experiences. Among all those amazing memories, one of the most unforgettable experiences would definitely be the Grade 7 WWW to Xi’An. Not only did I like the place and the trip itself, but what made it really memorable is the surprise party for my birthday. Everyone including teachers and my friends had a lot of fun. To talk about some recent memories, I also loved to have little senior parties with my squad in our own hideouts around the school buildings. We would play table tennis and eat cup noodles, pizza and chicken, while asking each other how much homework we have to do tonight.

I had a great time at IST! This school gave me a great international experience for my future life. I want to thank my parents for supporting me doing the school time. My time in China was outstanding. I had a lot of happy moments and met a lot of great people over the four years of living here. I developed as a person in those four years who is ready to move into a more independent life. Thank you papa. When I was even younger than knowing Harry Potter, I wanted to be a millionaire. According to my mother, I loved luxury stuffs since then. I loved everything that glitters, gold and jewels, for example.

Now, I want to be a billionaire. Perhaps, I always wanted to be rich and cool. After I graduate IST, I will be studying Finance in Hong Kong, so that I can become a billionaire financial magnate.

In the spring of 2013, I came to IST. I was in Grade 8 at that time.

It was a completely new environment to me, so I had a very hard time adapting to the new environment in first few weeks. However, I made good friends, Myung Hyun, Yun Su, Kee Hyun and others, who helped my new school life a lot. Thank you!!

I had so many favorite memories during my time at IST. The favorite memory was when I attended to CISSMUN, because I spent great time with my friends. I went for dinner and did many other fun things with them, so it was memorable time.

I really love baseball, and I have wanted to be a professional baseball player since I was young. Especially, when I was in elementary school, I spent all my weekends to play baseball in order to play well. But throughout the IST life, my future dream has changed. I have experienced great international experiences at IST. Thus, now, I would like to be a businessman or a person who works for a global society.

I first came to IST five years ago. I thought the move would have a huge impact on my lifestyle and it did! I met a lot of amazing friends as soon as I stepped into IST and, therefore, I was able to adapt quickly to this change. The funniest memory at IST would be during the Week Without Walls in Grade 11, when I got to know the new students that arrived at IST better. It also felt good to be in the IB diploma, but yet, for once, not having a huge amount of stress.

Since I was a child, I weirdly always wanted to work in the politics and eventually become a politician. This child dream did not stop after all those years, and I still wish to accomplish this dream. I do not wish to start talking politics or starting serious talks, however, as a child I always liked Mother Nature and I hated when people did not respect the environment.

It has already been three years since I moved to IST. When I was in South Korea, sometimes, I imagined that I could study and live abroad. Before coming to Tianjin, it was just an imagination in my dream. However, when my parents decided to leave South Korea and then when we found out we were going to Tianjin, China, my dream became true at the International School of Tianjin.

I came to IST when I was in grade 9 in 2014. By the time I moved to a new school, I found it interesting to see people speaking English in the school. This is because I got used to speaking Korean during my school life, since I spend most of my time in Korean schools. I was afraid of taking lessons at IST because everyone in the class all spoke in English.

My most memorable experience at IST was when I took part in CISSMUN. I had the opportunity to do public speaking there, and it was great fun to spend time with my friends in Shanghai. Thus, I enjoyed watching beautiful landscape of Shanghai.

When I was young, I wanted to become public official in Korea.

Now, I strongly want to become research worker working in hydrogen energy for my career. While I have been at IST for 3 years, I found it delightful to study science with memorable experience such as personal project.

I spent eight years at IST since I arrived at Tianjin in 2009. Although I spent my first year in chaos, I had a pleasant memory in grade five participating in school winter and spring shows and playing piano and violin. After transitioning to secondary school, I remember organizing fundraising activities and shaving teachers’ hairs in November. Climbing Tai Shan with thousands of complaints in grade eight is still my biggest personal achievement. Smashing the keyboard and drum kit with Kee Hyun at the practice room was one of my joys at IST.

I am especially thankful to IST because of resurrecting my dead dream. I dreamed to be an orchestra conductor and always waved my hands when I heard any kinds of music. Since coming to China, I thought it would be impossible to pursue my dream in unfamiliar environment. However, I found my dream was achievable as I played in the production orchestra for four years, quintet, and jazz choir. In the past few months, I found myself ready for starting the career of a professional composer, entertaining the world, and becoming incredibly famous.

I came to IST from the second semester of G10, I found it hard to adapt to this new environment and the languages caused me so many problems writing assignments and communicating with others.

My favourite memory of IST is the G11 WWW when we went to Gufupu to teach little kids. It was a great time having fun with friends as well as learning where my strength is.

When I was a young child, I wanted to work as an animator at Disney one day. Now, my interest in animation is getting stronger every day so my dream hasn’t changed. I still want to pursue my animation dream and I am admitted to the college where Walt Disney graduated from.

My biggest takeaway from IST is the wonderful people I’ve met.

Although many come and go at this school, each person has been influential in my life. My best memories at IST have been the simple moments. Sitting around the couches and making jokes, being a part of the musical productions, captain of the basketball team, dance crew and more. Out of all the memories, an unforgettable one was PE class in grade 9. The entire class sat on the ground and we played badminton sitting on the floor. Rare moments like this, where the entire class was united, no matter our differing backgrounds, will always stay with me.

Due to my obsession with Law & Order, Criminal Minds, and Psych, at just 5 years old (I was a mature kid) I’ve always been obsessed with crime. I hope to become a lawyer one day, perhaps even go into politics (if a zombie apocalypse breaks out I want to work for the government so I get benefits).

I want to thank IST, especially the teachers, for helping me not only in school but supporting my interest and dreams. More importantly, thank you to my friends. Even though most of us will be scattered across the world next year, our memories will always keep us connected.

I have had the incredible experience of being an IST student my whole life (I was actually in the womb while my mother was teaching here). And because of this, IST is not simply my school, but my home, and the people (though they have come and gone) have become my family. To pick only one favourite memory is honestly impossible. From secretly staying up during nap time, playing in the play room and hanging out in the shared rooms, to Week Without Walls, Formals, ACAMIS’s and so much more. What has contributed to all these memories have been the amazing friends I have made from all over the world, who I will probably never forget.

As a little girl (and probably up until about grade 10) I wanted to be an actress – or more, become famous. Though I am not entirely sure what I want to do, I want to be involved in the entertainment industry in some way, perhaps as a news broadcaster or presenter – so look out for me!

Growing up, I always thought about the day I would graduate from IST, but I never imagined the moment would come by so fast. I can’t imagine not being a student here anymore, but I’m so thankful for all the opportunities and experiences IST has brought me.

I came to IST in grade 9, though I had already lived in China when I was younger, however, being older and in a new city it was still a very difficult transition. I don’t really have one favorite memory at IST, but pretty much anything that involved my friends was amazing. The Farmers Market/ Community Fair was probably my favorite day of the school year, because it involved food, breaking the dress code and color fights. Also, Earth Day last year was surprisingly fun, even though I had to work with kids (which if you know me, is not my favorite thing).

Despite not enjoying attending class all the time, I am still so thankful that I got to go to such a great school, with such an amazing support system. My parents, especially my dad worked so hard to give me the opportunity to attend a school like this, and therefore I will forever be thankful, even when I don’t always show it.

I came to IST as a confused two year old, and I’m leaving as a slightly less confused 18 year old. In many ways, this school has been a weird third parent to me, and I owe much of who I am to growing up under its roof. It taught me to read and write, encouraged me to play sports and make friends, and even had to deal with my pink hair and teen angst in middle school. I could never fully express what the people, memories and opportunities that came with this place means to me.

My funniest memory will always be how in 9th grade, Jordon and I kinda trapped ourselves in the boys bathroom trying to collect samples for a lab report. An unnamed person walked into the stall next to us, and we panicked and didn’t say anything…. The events that followed will remain as the greatest story of my life.

I arrived at IST in 2014, in January. The best memories I had at IST are doing science lab, (because it looked so cool) and time spent with my first friend Chae Yun. At the beginning, when I came to this school, my English was not fluent as others, and Chae Yun was a really nice person and helped me a lot.

I wanted to be a fashion designer when I was young. However, I would like to be a pharmacist now, because after going to this school, I have figured out I like learning science and math. In addition, I like doing labs, so I want to be a pharmacist.

I have spent all of my high school at IST. During my time, I have made many friends for life. My time at IST has been at the very least, eventful. From traveling around to Chinese cities for ACAMIS and Week Without Walls, to playing foosball in the senior room, unless I have memory loss, I will remember everything.

As a child I wanted to be a doctor. The reason being, they made the most money. That’s it. Dr. Davies told me “If you ever keep on eating pizza like the way you do, you’ll have cheeks like that again.”

To him I said, “THAT’S the dream.” I hope I have inspired those in the grades below me.

As a kid I wanted to be a detective. I was so obsessed that I wrote little “Nancy Drew” books and weird crime stories (if all else fails, I have some material to publish!) While my sleuthing days are sadly over, I hope whatever I end up doing in life is driven by creativity and curiosity. That’s incredibly vague, but I’m not a very specific person anyway.
