More than a School Founded in Brussels in 1951, The International School of Brussels (ISB) is an independent, not-for-profit day school for students from Preschool to Grade 12. Our students come from more than 65 countries, creating a community where different cultures and perspectives are part of everyday learning. Set beside the beautiful Forêt de Soignes, our campus inspires students to learn, create, compete, and connect, making the school environment a place they are eager to return to every Monday. ISB offers a range of academic pathways, supported by specialist teachers who help students find the right level of challenge to pursue their individual interests and ambitions. Personalisation at ISB Personalised learning stems from a belief that all students are unique individual learners, with specific needs, interests, and abilities. Personalisation entails adapting teaching methods so that each student is given exactly what they need to succeed, be it in order to succeed academically, or in order to nurture what sparks their passions beyond the classroom. Through personalisation we ensure that our students are not just part of a system, but that a system is built around them.
Personalisation is implemented at ISB through the following four areas of focus: Relationships – Strong relationships are the foundation and the lens through which we get to know our students and are able to support and challenge them in their development. Pedagogy – Our teachers, who are experts in their fields, focus their pedagogic efforts upon assessment for learning and differentiation, in order to offer highquality personalised education that fits students’ unique profiles. Flexible Learning Pathways – To honour individual students’ different interests and talents, we focus on continuously developing our course options, cocurricular activities, and academic pathways. Learning Systems to Support Personalisation – Effective learning systems are necessary to support our teachers in building relationships with our students and to enable them to be the best practitioners possible. These include digital learning platforms and data systems, differentiated assessment methods, and strong professional development programmes.

The Learning Journey at ISB The learning journey at ISB spans from Preschool to Grade 12. Our school is divided into Lower School (Early Years, Junior Elementary, and Senior Elementary) and Upper School (Middle School and High School), whose programmes are specifically designed for the developmental needs of our students. Lower School at ISB From Preschool through Grade 6, ISB’s Lower School offers a continuous learning journey in which each stage builds on the last. Experienced teachers get to know students as individuals, providing the support and challenge they need to develop strong foundations in literacy, numeracy, inquiry, and critical thinking. Throughout the Lower School, students explore authentic questions and real-world challenges through inquiry, STEM, outdoor education, languages, the arts, and service learning. Regular experiences in the Forêt de Soignes encourage environmental awareness, collaboration, and resilience, while multilingual learning and opportunities for choice help students develop independence, creativity, and a strong sense of identity. As students move through the Early Years, Junior Elementary, and Senior Elementary, they take increasing ownership of their learning, and by Grade 6, they are prepared to make a confident transition to Middle School.
Early Years: Where Curiosity Begins Preschool - Kindergarten
In these foundational grades, children begin their learning journey in a safe, nurturing, and play-based environment where curiosity is encouraged, confidence grows, and every child is truly known. Purposeful play and guided activities build foundations in literacy, numeracy, communication, and social development. Through storytelling, exploration, creativity, movement, and collaboration, children develop independence, resilience, and a growing sense of self. Specialist experiences in art, music, physical education, outdoor learning, and French language enrich each child’s development, while experienced early-childhood educators personalise learning to each student’s strengths, interests, and needs.

Junior Elementary: Growing Minds Grades 1 - 4
In Junior Elementary, students strengthen their foundations in literacy, numeracy, communication, and critical thinking while taking greater ownership of their learning. Hands-on projects and inquiry-based investigations give them opportunities to ask questions, solve problems, and apply what they learn in meaningul ways. Teachers adapt learning to each student’s strengths and needs, providing the right balance of support and challenge. The Math and Reading Challenge extends students’ thinking, levelled French instruction and home language classes support their language development, and experiences in STEM, art, music, and physical education help students explore new interests and grow in confidence and independence.
Senior Elementary: Leading Forward Grades 5 - 6
Senior Elementary is a transformative stage where students grow into confident, capable learners, who are ready to embrace bigger opportunities and challenges. As academic expectations increase, students take greater ownership of their learning, developing the independence, resilience, and organisational skills needed for future success. Whether performing in the arts, competing in athletics, exploring bilingual learning, or tackling authentic, real-world challenges through the Capstone Project, students develop the confidence to lead and the curiosity to keep asking increasingly complex questions. By the end of Grade 6, they are well prepared – academically, socially, and emotionally – to make a successful transition to Middle School and the exciting opportunities beyond.

Upper School at ISB Middle School The Middle School at ISB is a place intentionally designed to meet the unique developmental needs of the adolescent learner. The MS provides high standards for learning combined with a freedom to choose one’s path. Students are given the opportunity to pursue a range of specific learning interests and passions, building on the experiences developed in the Lower School. Between the ages of 12 to 15, choice and autonomy become increasingly important as students are rapidly developing on both a personal and an intellectual level. The curriculum is designed to strengthen students’ independent learning skills, while nurturing their creativity and empowering them to choose courses that are personally relevant to them and to their passions. Our state-of-the-art facilities have been designed to support these dynamic and personalised learning experiences and to ensure that we can meet the needs and expectations of every student at ISB. Middle School students are also offered opportunities to make a difference, by contributing to projects serving local and global communities.

Collaborative Learning Spaces The custom-designed classrooms and common spaces in the Middle School feature an open and inviting atmosphere which encourages students to connect and collaborate with one another, enhancing their ability to work together. The space is designed to support personalised learning, allowing students to learn at their own pace and according to their needs. In addition, it fosters a strong sense of community by promoting open communication between teachers and students. Arts, Technology & Design Programme The MS programme offers a comprehensive range of course options that represent our commitment to providing high-quality personalised learning opportunities for all students. Students are encouraged to take initiative through their course choices, by offering a wide selection of courses that blend creativity, design, and technology. Spanning visual and performing arts, creative writing and filmmaking, and innovative STEM subjects, the Arts, Technology & Design Programme is designed to empower students to explore the overlap between art and technology and to engage with emerging technologies and artificial intelligence, coding and digital design, and real-life applications of STEM concepts in future-focused contexts.

High School High School is the place where learning culminates at ISB. Students are empowered to develop the skills and knowledge they will need for their success, as they venture out into a complex world.
Owning One’s Pathway to Success The High School offers a diverse programme taught by teachers who are global experts in their field. With over 120 different courses, our High School offers a robust range of flexible and personalised options that allow students to design their own path to graduation and beyond. As well as tailoring these options to students’ needs, interests, and learning styles, a strong emphasis continues to be placed on character development and the personal skills necessary to thrive in a changing and interconnected society. All students are encouraged to advocate and speak for themselves, to be independent learners, to pursue their passions, and to work towards realising their dreams. All ISB High School Graduation Pathways – such as the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme, the US High School Diploma, the BTEC Programme, the Advanced Placement (AP) Programme, or the ISB Individualised Diploma – open doors to great future opportunities. Our High School offers the largest inclusive IBDP in Belgium, and our average diploma score is consistently above world averages.
High School Counselling At ISB, we care about our students’ wellbeing at every stage of their learning journey and understand that High School can be a time of change and important decisions about the future. Grade 10 to 12 students benefit from the advice and guidance of a dedicated team of counsellors who guide, support, and advocate for students throughout their entire High School journeys. Students and their families are guided and supported as they navigate the journey of adolescence, grow their academic understanding, contribute meaningfully to society, and prepare for the future that awaits them. Furthermore, our counsellors proactively build relationships with universities, colleges, and employers from around the world in order to offer our students all the resources they need to make informed decisions about their futures.

We are proud to be the only international school in Belgium offering five High School pathways. This range gives students the flexibility and stretch they need to prepare for best-fit universities and opportunities beyond ISB. US High School Diploma: All students who meet the required credits graduate with the internationally recognised, Middle States-accredited US High School Diploma, providing access to universities and colleges worldwide. Students may also pursue additional external qualifications to support their chosen pathway. International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP): This internationally recognised qualification is available to 70% of ISB students and offers more than 40 Standard and Higher Level courses – the widest IB course selection in Belgium. Advanced Placement (AP): AP Courses are externally assessed college-level courses that allow students to explore subjects in greater depth. Combinable with ISB, IB, and BTEC courses, they enable students earn university credit and strengthen their applications to universities across the US and Europe. BTEC: This flexible, future-focused pathway combines academic study with practical, industryrelevant learning. With opportunities in Art & Design and Sport, ISB’s BTEC pathway supports students in developing expertise and preparing for the next steps in their chosen fields. ISB Individualised Diploma: Designed for students receiving Intensive Learning Support (ILS), this pathway combines tailored support with learning goals aligned to each student’s strengths and future aspirations.

Athletics at ISB The Athletics Programme at ISB is truly an extension of the classroom, helping to make students better athletes by supporting their individual development in a holistic, caring, and joyful way. Our Athletics Programme offers 15 sports and is the only school in Belgium to offer American Football, Lacrosse, Field Hockey, Baseball, Softball, and a full programme for boys Volleyball. In total, ISB Athletics has over 50 competitive teams, enabling students to test multiple activities and try out a different sport each season, in order to find their true passion. ISB is a leading member of the International Schools Sports Tournament (ISST) Organisation, a network of top international school athletics programmes from across Europe. Since its founding in the late 1950s, ISB Athletics has grown into one of Europe’s largest and most respected programmes, with our student-athletes having won over 100 ISST Championships.
Inclusion ISB Athletics creates an inclusive environment for everyone to excel at their chosen sport. Run by the Raiders Athletics Department, the Raiders Academy is an extension of our programme, aiming to provide a pathway for selected student-athletes who aspire to take their athletic performance and understanding to the next level. Additionally, ISB is a proud partner of Belgium’s Special Olympics. Our Special O’s Team is open to all Intensive Learning Support students from Grade 3 to Grade 12, and our Special Olympians recurrently participate in national competitions across many categories.

Athletics Facilities ISB has some of the finest athletics facilities amongst international schools in Europe. Featuring two gyms, two athletics fields, a running track, a fully equipped fitness room, a fully equipped Strongbox outdoor gym, Dojang for Martial Arts, a Tennis Bubble, indoor rock-climbing walls, and a dance studio.

Performances & Exhibitions Student artworks and performances take centre stage in a series of schoolwide exhibitions and events that bring together our community of students, parents, faculty, and alumni. Our student artists engage in a wide range of creative outlets, from theatre productions and musicals to technical theatre, orchestra, band, and choir performances, held both on campus and at venues throughout Brussels. These events provide valuable opportunities for students to connect with audiences, refine the message of their art, and gain insightful feedback, helping them deepen their understanding of their artistic aspirations and personal vision.
Excursions & Trips ISB is a long standing member of AMIS (The Association for Music in International Schools) and ISTA (International Schools Theatre Association). Our students attend AMIS and ISTA festivals and symposiums throughout the year, where they study and collaborate with student artists from other international schools.

ISB Plus The ISB Plus Programme of after-school activities enables all students to discover their passions outside of the classroom. Our co-curricular programme directly supports the school’s mission, introducing students to a range of interests that provide opportunities for personal development beyond the curriculum. ISB Plus is a safe and inclusive environment where students can learn new skills, perfect existing ones, and discover talents and passions. The programme includes approximately 90 different activities, which run everyday, over three seasons. The activities fall under five general categories – Arts, Outdoor, Active, Interests, and Languages – meaning there is something suitable for all grade levels and all preferences.
ISB Plus Supervision To support our parents and students, ISB also offers a flexible, safe, and fun afterschool Supervision Programme for all students from Preschool to Grade 6. A range of fun and relaxing activities are available during Supervision with board games, drawing, and puzzles for older students, and a monthly activity theme for the younger students, which includes story time, sing-a-longs, and crafts.

STEM Programme Being ready for the future is vital for our students’ success beyond ISB. As part of our curriculum, students explore STEM from an early age through hands-on learning that encourages curiosity, creativity, and problem-solving. STEM Labs in the Lower School give students opportunities to investigate questions, test ideas, and learn through discovery, whereas in the Upper School, a broad selection of courses allows students to deepen their interests and apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics to practical challenges. Across the school, our aim is to help students think critically, use technology with purpose, and develop skills they can carry into their future careers.
STEM Learning Journey STEM learning begins with play-based exploration. In the Early Years, children begin building, testing, and experimenting as they discover materials and simple circuits.
Lower School
In Grades 3 to 6, students take on more structured design challenges and scientific investigations. They use coding and technology, design prototypes, and explore concepts such as forces and energy. As they test ideas and tackle real-world problems, students learn to collect data, improve their designs, and explain their thinking with increasing independence.
Middle School students build on their Lower School STEM experience by tackling more complex design and science challenges. They apply scientific, mathematical, and engineering concepts to design, test, analyse, and refine solutions, working collaboratively and with greater independence.
Middle School
Projects include designing boats to investigate density and forces, and building wind turbines to explore energy transfer and sustainability. These hands-on challenges help students strengthen their scientific reasoning, explain their decisions, and approach problems creatively.
In the High School, students can pursue STEM subjects in greater depth through specialised courses, electives, projects, and extracurricular activities. They apply advanced scientific and mathematical thinking to increasingly sophisticated challenges, using data and analysis to test ideas and optimise solutions.

Working independently and collaboratively, students develop their technical knowledge and learn to communicate their reasoning with precision and confidence. These experiences help them explore their interests and prepare for further study and opportunities in STEM.

Inclusion & Challenge Services At ISB, we embrace the uniqueness of every learner and believe that learning diversity enriches the school community and provides mutual benefits for everyone. Our Inclusion & Challenge Department has an established multidisciplinary team-based approach, providing the best tailored support for each student, based on learners’ unique profiles, individual circumstances, and learning goals.
Learning Support Services Learning support is available for all students with learning differences, including students who exhibit a greater need for challenge or extension opportunities. Services include Speech and Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Educational Psychology/Educational Testing, School Counselling, College and Careers Guidance Counselling, English Language Development Classes, and Home Language Classes.

Inclusive Learning Environments Students are supported in typical classroom settings by teachers who differentiate instruction and provide necessary accommodations and modifications. Additional to differentiated teaching practices, students are also supported via the following facilities:
In the Middle School and High School, there are Learning Support Centres equipped as a suite of small classroom spaces and offices separated by large windows that allow for testing accommodations to be administered while direct instruction is delivered in another area of the centre. In the Lower School, each Learning Support Teacher has a small classroom where they provide in-class support in a collaborative model, which is established through flexible grouping opportunities. Students with moderate support needs are supported through co-teaching and in small groups, in the Learning Support Classrooms or Centres described above. Six specially designed Intensive Learning Support classrooms equipped with adapted working spaces, sensory integration spaces, and some with shared kitchen spaces for life-skills teaching. Students may be served in Speech Language Therapy rooms in sectional spaces, within the classroom, or other social environments or collaboration spaces. Occupational Therapy is delivered in a spacious separate clinic equipped with an outside sensory path. The building is equipped with a ceiling hook that allows for different kinds of swings to be attached, crash pads, soft PE-type equipment, and a table for writing and fine-motor activities. The Occupational Therapy clinic is located in the Chalet, but occupational therapists can also work in classrooms.

Languages at ISB ISB is a multicultural and multilingual community, and the richness of our international identity is also mirrored by our curriculum. While English is our main teaching language, we want to ensure that our students have many opportunities and incentives to learn the languages of our host nation and to maintain a strong relationship with their native home languages.
Home Language Programme When students move to another country and their schooling takes place in English, it is critical that they find ways to continue learning their home language. The home language is an integral part of their cultural and personal identity, and thus vital for maintaining a positive self-concept. In the spirit of honouring our diverse student body, in the 2024-25 school year we introduced the Home Language Programme in the Lower School. In addition to French and Dutch for native speakers, ISB started offering classes in the languages most spoken at home by our student community, scheduled during the school day and within students’ timetables. In 2025-26, we extended this programme to the Upper School as well, supporting students throughout the school in maintaining their linguistic and cultural identity. Examples of languages on offer include German, Hebrew, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin, Norwegian, Portuguese, Spanish, and Swedish, but the exact offering can vary from year to year based on current student demographics. Additionally, ISB Plus offers home language classes after school, based on parent and student interest. Home language lessons develop linguistic and academic proficiency, and throughout the school, ISB teachers create learning environments in which students’ multilingual identities and skills are celebrated, promoted, and used in meaningful ways.

Bilingual Programmes Starting in Grade 5 and continuing throughout Middle School, students with a C Level of French can take Science and Social Studies in either English or French. This bilingual programme has been offered for more than 30 years and is among the most popular offerings at ISB. Taught by subject specialists and following the same curriculum and approach in both languages, the programme supports students learning French as a second language as well as native speakers who wish to continue their studies in French. In High School, apart from a substantial programme of language acquisition and development courses in English, Dutch, French, Japanese, and Spanish, students can take the IBDP Core Course Theory of Knowledge in English or French. Furthermore, approximately 50% of the students following the IB Diploma Programme at ISB receive bilingual diplomas, which is almost double the global percentage of bilingual diplomas awarded.
English Language Development Students who need support developing their English when they join ISB benefit from our English Language Development (ELD) programme, which helps them develop the language skills needed to access the curriculum as quickly as possible. Specialist ELD teachers provide targeted support both inside and outside mainstream classes, focusing on academic vocabulary, grammar, and textual structures. Support is tailored to each learner and adjusted according to their level of need.

Our Family Association As soon as your child becomes a student at ISB, your family becomes part of the ISB Family Association (FA). Led by parents in our community, the Family Association has a mission to build a well-informed school community where all families are welcomed, encouraged to participate, and all nationalities are celebrated. Our parent volunteers dedicate their time, energy, and heart to the school and organise more than 200 events each year, including the annual ISB International Festival.
Our Alumni For 75 years ISB has been a second home to so many individuals who left their mark and helped us become the school we are today. Our alumni are at the heart of our success as an institution, and they will pave the way for the future we envision at ISB. Currently we have over 25,000 alumni around the world, and we cherish every opportunity we get to celebrate them and to welcome them back home.
Our Faculty We currently have more than 215 teachers, teaching assistants, and teaching interns. Governance Founded in 1951, The International School of Brussels is Belgium's oldest international school. Our 75-year history of success is underpinned by decades of continuity in governance and leadership.
Board of Trustees ISB is governed by a Board of Trustees. The Board is responsible for setting the school's strategy, and is the guardian of the school's mission. This includes holding the school to account for delivering on all aspects of the mission, verifying that the school operates on a sound financial basis, and taking all necessary steps to ensure the long-term success of the school.

ISB Director & Leadership Team The Director is responsible to the Board of Trustees for all aspects of school life, and is supported by a strong Leadership Team of Sectional Heads and Department Directors, each with strategic responsibilities for different areas of our school.

Our Forever Home In 2023-24, after almost 70 years of leasing, we announced that our campus – our home – is officially ours. This marked one of the most significant milestones in the history of our school, as it not only assures the future of ISB on our home grounds, but it also opened new possibilities to further develop our campus so as to provide even more learning opportunities for our students.
