Among the more than 3 million Syrian refugees and 6.5 million displaced people inside Syria, most are women and girls. The struggles they face are the focus of a new report by the IRC based on thousands of interactions with women and girls in the region since the crisis began, and interviews with nearly 200 Syrian refugees.
Those interviewed for the report say they experience chronic sexual and domestic violence, harassment and early or forced marriage. Many find it difficult to access health care, education or other services and report they are often confined to their homes.
With no end to the war in sight, the plight of Syrian women is likely to worsen. The IRC report urgently calls for their safety and protection to become a top priority and gives recommendations for ways to improve
the lives of women and girls.
