WANTING TO LEARN
The Old WAY JKD GARY DILL
Jeet Kune Do seminars have been around since the mid 1980’s.
The seminar is an excellent vehicle for interested students to learn the various aspects of JKD.
rs are students of a JKD expand their knowledge fine points and advanced techniques.
There are also those inquisitive students from other arts who want to experience the famous fighting art of Bruce Lee.
The seminar usually is a two day training session, but some may last several days or even just one day. Usually they are taught by a well known JKD instructor whose reputation attracts curious and eager attendees.
I have been teaching JKD seminars since 1989 and since then have traveled all across the US from coast to coast and also internationally.
My focus in seminars is teaching the “ pre1973” JKD, also known as the “original’ JKD. This is the Jeet Kune Do that Bruce Lee himself developed prior to his death which is a blend of Wing Chun Gung Fu, boxing, and some aspects of fencing
The focus of this JKD is for actual combat void of sport aspects, aesthetics, or classical techniques. There are also seminars in JKD Concepts which incorporates the arts of arnis, kali, muay thai, etc.
There are seminars taught in numerous other martial arts such a jujitsu, aikijitsu, weaponry, and a variety of other interesting systems.
A typical JKD seminar that I teach usually is for two days and for 5-6 hours per day.
I start out with stretching and loosening exercises then go into some of the basics such as learning the Oakland JKD fighting stance, then how to build up your speed and power in punching / striking, the JKD kicking skills.
Later I teach block and counters, counter against common blocks, entering to attacking, trapping hands and more.
Each seminar is different based upon the previous skill level of the group A good instructor will customize the seminar to fit the needs of the attendees.Sometimes the host may request specific techniques to be taught during the seminar.
Like I mentioned previously, each seminar is different based upon the wants and needs of the group or the host.
Seminars are here to stay in the martial arts community. It gives the attendees the opportunity to learn different techniques and develop a higher skill level. I enjoy teaching seminars for it gives me the opportunity to meet and teach other martial artists who otherwise I never would have known, to travel to places that I never would have been.
A seminar may be called a workshop or a training camp, but the concept is still the same The purpose of seminars is to learn different martial arts. You are there to learn and to expand your knowledge of the martial arts.
Many of you have already been to seminars, but those of you who have not, I highly recommend you get a friend and attend one that has interest to you.
There are no strangers at my seminars and all are welcome who are sincere in learning.
My informative and innovative JKD seminars are invaluable for expanding one's skills and knowledge
For both men and women alike, my training fits anyone with a true desire to learn and grow in their understanding of the JKD system and their skills They provide a unique platform to learn varied techniques, meet fellow martial artists, and experience different teaching styles.
Whether it is called a seminar, workshop, or training camp, the goal remains the same: to learn and grow in martial arts.
For those who haven't yet attended, I strongly encourage you to grab a friend and join a seminar that piques your interest.
At my seminars, everyone with a sincere desire to learn is welcomed, ensuring a supportive and enriching experience for all.

Breathing Secrets the MAsters don’t want you to know
In Martial Arts, masters often hold back information to have a competitive advantage over their students. That is why a good instructor will suggest you learn to control your breath.
While a great one will make sure you understand, why! But the superior teacher will teach you in addition, the when, and how to breathe in a combative situation.
Mastering breath control is essential in improving cardiovascular fitness and optimizing speed and power in your strikes as well as being able to take one.
The secret to breath control when striking or being hit is understanding how this is dependent upon where the strike is originating from or where you are getting hit.
The use of breath control will enhance the transfer of kinetic as well as intrinsic energy from your body onto your opponent, increasing the power of your strikes and may lessen the impact experience when struck.
For example, high straight and circular punches that originate from the upper body, such as a jab or hook to the head you must to optimize power exhale forcefully through the mouth in a manner mimicking the “ssss” sound of a snake hissing.
That which is attained by contracting the muscles in the abdomen, chest, and throat, creating a stable base from which to generate more force and transmit more optimal kinetic vs. muscular energy in the strike.
When being hit, you roll and make a similar sound for the same reason.
Further, in executing mid-line strikes to the body, for instance, throwing a straight punch or front kick it is crucial to exhale while mimicking a sound of telling someone to be quiet, making a “shish” sound; contracting the muscles in the diaphragm and chest that creates controlled exhalation of air.
This breathing action engages the muscles in the middle of the body, providing a more stable foundation from which to generate power and control the movement of the strike. In executing strikes that originate from the lower body, a low kick or knee strike, your performance level excels by mimicking the sound of laughter, making a “haaaaaaaa” like sound.
This requires contracting the muscles in the lower abdomen and pelvis. This results in an explosively dynamic exhalation of air that engages the muscles in the lower body that maximizes the transfer of kinetic vs. muscular energy to the target.
This explosive breath control increases speed while subconsciously shortens impact time allowing for the greater transfer of energy.
Using these techniques in breath control allows for a snap vs. pushing force in the release of energy from the different areas of the body. This reduces a sense of fatigue and will measurably increase endurance during training and competition.
Notably, being able to control your breathing under stress is essential in combat.
More so in sports like boxing and MMA. Mastery of the different breath control techniques that correspond to different areas of the body is the most proven method to increase your overall performance in combat sports or military arts, that even includes shooting skills.
Understanding and mastering breath control is a game-changer in martial arts and combat sports. By tailoring your breathing techniques to different strikes and areas of the body, you can significantly enhance your power, speed, and endurance while minimizing fatigue.
The secrets of breath control, from the "ssss" of high strikes and the “shish” mid-line strikes to the "haaaa" of lower body attacks, provide a stable base for optimizing kinetic energy transfer and maintaining composure under stress.
Ultimately, the superior teacher equips you with the knowledge of when, why, and how to breathe, unlocking your full potential in every combative situation.

WOMEN WARRIORS
RELENTLESS
By Sumiko Nakano
Jillian DeCoursey didn’t begin her Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) journey with aspirations of championships or fame. Instead, it started as a way to stay active after years of playing competitive sports
Growing up, she was always involved in athletics, but after college, she sought something more challenging— something that could push her physically and mentally. What began as a search for fitness quickly evolved into a career filled with hard-earned victories and a deep love for the sport.
Initially focused on Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where she enjoyed success in tournaments, Jillian didn’t expect to transition to MMA. She had found a passion for grappling, but her coach saw untapped potential in her.
One day, during a regular training session, he asked if she wanted to try an MMA fight. That simple question would change her trajectory. Jillian agreed, took on her first fight, and won.
It was in that moment she realized MMA had something unique to offer. What started as casual training soon became a life-defining passion, as the sport allowed her to blend the physical challenges, she craved with the mental strategy required in competition.
Her early days in MMA weren’t without their difficulties. Just months into her training, Jillian suffered a serious knee injury that required surgery, setting her back significantly. She recovered, only to break her collarbone soon after. These injuries tested her resolve and could have ended her MMA journey. However, each setback only strengthened her determination. Jillian pushed through the pain and learned valuable lessons about perseverance.
Every challenge helped her develop the mental toughness and resilience that would become central to her identity as a fighter.
At 38, when many athletes are winding down, Jillian experienced the pinnacle of her career: winning the Invicta FC Atomweight Championship.
This victory felt like a dream realized— a fairytale moment she hadn’t thought possible when she first stepped into the MMA world. Her journey to this title was marked by pivotal moments: her first amateur fight that sparked her love for the sport, her professional debut, and her unforgettable knockout of Lindsey VanZant.
Yet none were more significant than her rear-naked choke finish over Jessica Delboni, a defining moment that earned her the Invicta title and cemented her status as a champion.
Over the years, Jillian’s evolution as a fighter has been remarkable. Initially, she was primarily a grappler, relying on her Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu background. However, she transformed into a wellrounded fighter through dedication and constant improvement, integrating striking into her skillset.
5'2" (157cm)
This transformation wasn’t easy. It took years of hard work and a willingness to grow. She became increasingly selective about the opportunities she took, always keeping long-term success in mind.
Mental preparation and recovery also became central to her approach, as she learned to balance the rigors of training with the need to rest and recharge.
Outside of fighting, Jillian’s life is rich with activities that keep her grounded. She is an avid snowboarder, hiker, and traveler, always seeking new adventures and experiences.
These passions give her the space to disconnect from the pressures of competition and focus on the simple joys of life. In addition to her athletic pursuits, Jillian runs her own private practice as a licensed mental health counselor. Helping others navigate their mental health challenges is deeply fulfilling and provides her with a sense of balance.
This dual career allows her to give back to others while maintaining her own well-being, both physically and mentally.
Throughout her MMA career, Jillian has faced many setbacks, but what has kept her going is her love for the sport. For her, fighting has never been about fame or money—it’s about passion, self-discovery, and the sheer joy of competition.
Over time, she has learned to embrace both the victories and the losses, knowing that each moment is part of a larger journey.
Every fight, every injury, every triumph, and every setback has contributed to her growth as a fighter and a person. She now looks back at those moments of hardship and sees them as crucial learning experiences that helped shape her into the athlete she is today. With this mindset, she continues to move forward, both inside and outside the cage, with the same relentless drive that has earned her the nickname "Lionheart."
As I listened to Jillian recount her journey, I was struck by her unwavering resilience. She embodies the essence of a true fighter—not just physically, but mentally and emotionally.
Her dedication to the sport, combined with her ability to persevere through adversity, is a testament to what is possible when you follow your passion with unwavering commitment. Jillian’s story is a powerful reminder that success is not just about the wins, but about the lessons learned along the way.
As her MMA career continues, I look forward to seeing where her relentless pursuit takes her next. With her "Lionheart" spirit, there’s no doubt that Jillian DeCoursey will continue to inspire both in and out of the cage.
THE DEADLY NG GA KU
Ng Ga Kuen, also known as Five Families/Five Animals Kung Fu or Five Family Fist is a major traditional Southern Chinese Martial Art that traces its origins to the Shaolin Temples of China. Ng Ga Kuen roughly translates to “Five Family Boxing/Fist”.
As the name implies, it is distinctive in that it brings together techniques of five different family styles: Choy Gar, Li Gar, Mok Gar, Fut Gar, and Hung Gar, taking the best of each style to create a very complete system.
The Ng Ga Kuen style also incorporates techniques and forms from the 5 legendary Shaolin animals, the Tiger, the Dragon, the Leopard, the Snake and the Crane.
KICKS OF
The Long Front Kick: A Fusion of Strength and Technique.
Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu, a traditional Chinese martial art, is renowned for its lethal array of kicks, particularly the Long Front Kick and the Tall Front Kick. Each of these kicks embodies a unique blend of skill, agility, and strategic combat prowess, making them pillars of excellence in this ancient art form.
The Long Front Kick is a cornerstone of Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu. It represents a harmonious fusion of strength and technique, demonstrating the fundamental principle of hip rotation to amplify the force behind the strike. By channeling the power of the hips and extending the leg with precision, this kick becomes a formidable weapon with an enhanced reach.
It is designed to strike opponents from a distance with both accuracy and impact, making it an essential tool in a martial artist's arsenal.
SideKick(PingChoi)
1. Side Kick (Ping Choi):
Although not strictly a front kick, the side kick is delivered by turning the body sideways and striking with the edge of the foot, targeting the opponent’s side or knee.
2. Push Kick (Bong Choi):
More about creating distance than inflicting damage, this kick involves thrusting the foot forward to push the opponent away, used to maintain space or disrupt their balance.
The journey of mastery and selfdiscovery practicing these kicks goes beyond mere physical movements.
3. The Long Front Kick teaches the importance of generating power from the core and utilizing proper body mechanics. The Tall Front Kick emphasizes agility, timing, and flexibility.
Together, these techniques guide practitioners on a journey of selfdiscovery, discipline, and mastery. Through relentless practice and dedication, individuals can unlock the true potential of these techniques, harnessing their power to overcome challenges and emerge victorious in combat.
4. Front Kick (Chop Choi):
A straightforward kick aimed at the midsection or head. It involves raising the knee and extending the leg
5. The Tall Front Kick: Speed, Accuracy, and Agility In contrast, the Tall Front Kick is tailored for close-quarters engagements where speed, accuracy, and agility are paramount.
This kick targets the opponent's face or jaw with surgical precision, demanding a high degree of flexibility and control. Practitioners who master this technique can unleash swift and devastating strikes even in confined spaces, showcasing the adaptability and versatility of Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu.
The Three Variations of Front Kicks In addition to the Long and Tall Front Kicks, Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu also includes other essential kicking techniques
Each kick, although in shape and structure are the same, are individual techinques that demonstrate the lethal effect that each movement can deliver to an attacker.
6. Lower Front kick
"Begin the encounter in a strong fighting stance, radiating confidence and readiness. As soon as your opponent, initiate the action with a powerful sidekick or a spinning kick to disrupt their balance and set the tone of the fight.
Transition smoothly into a crossing leg stance, grounding yourself with one hand while keeping the other hand raised to shield your face, prepared for any counterattacks.
This defensive posture allows you to maintain awareness of your opponent's movements. Next, execute a sliding serpent sidekick aimed at your opponent's groin. This aggressive and unexpected maneuver targets a vulnerable area, catching them off guard and forcing them to react.
As they turn in response to your kick, use their moment of distraction to vanish from their line of sight. Strike from underneath, leveraging your agility to surprise them with a swift and decisive attack.
This approach not only showcases your martial arts skills but also emphasizes the importance of strategy, timing, and adaptability in securing victory."
These techniques are more than just combat techniques. They are a testament to the rich history and strategic depth of this martial art. By mastering these kicks, practitioners can achieve a balance of power, precision, and agility, making them formidable opponents in any combat scenario.
Embrace the teachings of Ng Ga Kuen Kung Fu, embody the spirit of the Long Front Kick and the Tall Front Kick, and let the legacy of martial excellence guide you on a path of enlightenment and empowerment.

In the year 1570 of the Tensho era (天正 元年), Japan was ravaged by the ceaseless conflicts of the Sengoku period, a time of political upheaval, shifting alliances, and violent power struggles between rival daimyō such as Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen, and Uesugi Kenshin.
As open warfare raged across the land, a subtler conflict was unfolding in the shadows, carried out by those whose existence was barely acknowledged: the shinobi.
While the shinobi clans of Iga and Kōga are well-known for their roles in espionage, sabotage, and assassination, there existed a deeper, more secretive layer within their ranks—a select few who were entrusted with safeguarding the most vital secrets of their order.
Among these chosen ones, the Hidden Oath of the Silent Path, or Shinobi no Gokuin (忍びの極隠), was spoken. This oath was not known to all shinobi, nor was it taken lightly. Only a handful of the most trusted and skilled leaders— those destined to shape the future of their clans—were entrusted with its words.
The shinobi hierarchy was complex and often misunderstood. Most foot soldiers, or genin, who executed orders in the field, were unaware of the existence of such an oath. Even among higher ranks such as the chūnin (those who coordinated missions) and jōnin (the elite leaders of shinobi clans), not all were granted the privilege of taking this oath. It was reserved for the true inheritors of the Silent Path—the guardians of the ancient wisdom of ninjutsu.
The need for such an oath arose from the fracturing political landscape of the Sengoku period. As shinobi became essential to warring lords' military strategies, their role's purity was threatened. The Iga and Kōga clans, who had perfected the arts of espionage over centuries, realized that their very existence depended on a higher code that transcended warlords' volatile allegiances.
The Hidden Oath was thus established to bind the chosen few to an unbreakable moral compass, ensuring their true purpose—maintaining balance in the shadows— was never compromised.
However, secrecy has a price. The shinobi who were not initiated into this higher echelon of leadership often speculated about the existence of such a vow.
Some jōnin, even those unaware of the oath’s contents, sought to create their interpretations or adaptations, hoping to enhance their power within their clans. This led to rumors, misinterpretations, and even the creation of false oaths.
As a result, in some shinobi circles, the oath took on an almost mythic status— part legend, part truth.
Over the centuries, the true Hidden Oath remained elusive, passed down through only the most trusted few, while others continued to shape their versions without full knowledge. Even today, whispers of the Hidden Oath persist within martial arts schools and secret societies, though its exact words and meaning have been obscured by time.
Some claim the oath continues to be practiced by descendants of these ancient shinobi, while others believe it has become merely a symbol of a forgotten past.
Regardless of its form, the legacy of the Hidden Oath still resonates. It represents the eternal struggle between loyalty and betrayal, honor and secrecy, in a world where the line between myth and reality often blurs.
The chosen few who continue to follow the Silent Path remain unseen, their oath as unbreakable as ever, guarding the knowledge and traditions of their ancestors in the shadows.
SHINOBI NO GOKUIN (忍びの極隠) - THE HIDDEN OATH OF THE SILENT PATH
In the stillness of the night, beneath the watchful gaze of the unseen, I bind myself to the Silent Path, the way of our secret order. By the spirits of my forebears and the shadows that conceal us, I swear this oath, known only to those who walk in darkness.
KAGE NO NUNO (影の布) - BY THE VEIL OF SHADOWS:
I pledge to become one with the darkness, to move in silence as the breath of the night. My steps shall leave no trace, my presence shall stir no air. In the blackness, I shall find my strength, and in the unseen, I shall dwell, forever hidden from the eyes of the unworthy.
MABOROSHI NO HA (幻の刃) - BY THE BLADE OF THE SHINOBI:
I vow to wield my blade with the precision of a phantom, unseen until the moment it strikes. This weapon is the extension of my will, forged in the fires of our secret arts. I shall use it only in service to the shadows, to strike down those who threaten the balance we protect. My blade will be swift, silent, and final.
CHINMOKU NO FŪIN (沈黙の封印) - BY THE SEAL OF SILENCE:
I swear to guard the secrets of our school with my life, to let no word pass my lips that would betray our order. The knowledge entrusted to me is sacred, passed down through the generations in whispers and shadows. I shall be the final sentinel of this wisdom, unyielding in my duty, even unto death.
KAMEN NO CHIGIRI (仮⾯の契り) - BY THE FACES OF MANY:
I vow to master the art of transformation, to wear the faces of the many while remaining true to the one within.

In the stillness of the night, beneath the watchful gaze of the unseen, I bind myself to the Silent Path, the way of our secret order.
The way of the martial artist is the way of enduring, surviving and prevailing over all that would destroy him.
More than delivering strikes and slashes, and deeper in significance than the simple outwitting of an enemy, Ninpô is the way of attaining that which we need while making the world a better place.
The skill of the Ninja is the art of winning.
Toshitsugu Takamatsu
My identity shall be as fluid as water, adaptable to every situation yet anchored in the core of the Silent Path. I shall deceive the world but never myself, for I am the keeper of the unseen.
SOSEN NO CHI (祖先の⾎ BLOOD OF THE ANCESTORS:
I swear to honor the blood that flows through me, the lineage of warriors who have walked this path before. Their spirits guide me. Their honor binds me. I shall not falter in upholding the principles of our order, for to do so would be to betray all who came before me.
KAGE NO JIHI (影の慈悲) - BY THE SHADOW’S MERCY:
I vow to protect those who live in the light, even as I walk in the dark. The innocent shall be my charge; their safety is my silent mission.
I shall strike only in justice, and defend without recognition, for the true warrior needs no thanks, only the knowledge that balance is maintained.
KAGE NO MICHI (影の道) - BY THE PATH OF THE SHADOWED END: I swear to embrace the inevitable end with dignity, knowing that death is but another shadow to walk through.
When my time comes, I shall face it without fear, for I know that in death, I join the ranks of those who have become the eternal watchmen of the Silent Path. The shadows will carry my legacy, my spirit forever guarding the way.
This oath I swear in secrecy, known only to those of our order, passed from master to student in the deepest recesses of the night. Let it be the bond that ties us to the Silent Path, a covenant unspoken yet unbreakable.
KAGE NO ARU KAGIRI (影のある限り)AS LONG AS SHADOWS EXIST, SO TOO SHALL THIS OATH BIND US, THE UNSEEN GUARDIANS OF THE HIDDEN WAY.

The most basic use of the nunchaku are striking, spinning, and swinging purposes Moreover it is also used for blocking, chocking, joint locks and other control techniques. When it is used in close quarter combat, the nunchaku has the advantage of increasing it's range of strike. Even though sometimes it may be difficult to control the stick, the chain or rope gives more advantage to strike the opponent from different angles. As the opponent reaches a closer range the nunchaku can be used to attack the vital parts of the human body.
Enter Shuny Bee, an extraordinary instructor renowned for his expertise in nunchaku. Shuny Bee has dedicated his life to the martial arts and has become a master of this traditional weapon.
His teachings are not just about the physical techniques; they delve deeper into the philosophy and discipline that come with wielding the nunchaku.
Shuny Bee, author of “Way of the Nunchaku” blends the rigorous training, historical insights, and practical applications.
He emphasizes the importance of form, precision, and respect for the weapon. Under his guidance, students learn not only how to handle the nunchaku but also how to incorporate its principles into their daily lives, fostering a sense of inner peace and confidence.
Nunchaku Practice Behind the shoulder throw
From a starting postion
Crossing the left shoulder around the neck and under the right arm to catch
Nunchaku Practice Turning whip
Begin turning as the nunchaku passes in front of your body.
At the peak of the turn throw the nunchaku toward opponent
Just like the speed of lightning which can be calculated to hit the earth 100 times per second, which could lead to massive destruction to its surrounding
The nunchaku strike causes fatal damage as it's strike can travel up to 120 miles per hour. This speed is bound to injure an opponent, which could eventually lead to great destruction. The striking techniques are used as an aggressive form of defense in the art of nunchaku whereby the strikes are quickly thrown before an opponent can strike or return to a guarding position.
The nunchaku spinning technique represents the cyclone. Just like the cyclone spins around in circles with the speed of 74 miles per hours or even greater and can cause immense destruction to any thing on it's path –the spinning technique of nunchaku can become a great disadvantage to your opponent Because of it's great spinning motion – the nunchaku itself becomes invisible and can turn into a deadly weapon.
In the spinning technique the wrist plays a vital role for controlling and executing the nunchaku with speed and tremendous force. With the combination and speed of this force in a spinning motion, the chances to get hurt is inevitable
When an expert demonstrates the spinning technique, the nunchaku becomes invisible where you can only hear the sound of the nunchaku like that of an electrical fan.
To control the crowd and disperse them, this spinning technique plays a vital role especially in street fights.
In the art of Nunchaku, the swing techniques are very effective and essential. Like building anything else you must first start with a strong foundation for an effective swinging technique.
Depending upon your comfort there are various stances to swing your nunchaku with enough weight and power. Acquiring this solid base is the starting point of an effective technique. There are numerous ways in which the nunchaku can be used in a swinging technique. Again, here too timing and distance play an important role to make this technique effective.
Another important aspect for this technique to be effective is that the wrist should be limber so that a snapping motion is made while executing this technique As long as the swinging technique is in a continuous flowing pattern more power is generated and it becomes difficult for the opponent to approach you
Whoever dares to approach you in such a force field might be in for a powerful hit. The swinging techniques can come very useful when attacked by multiple opponents. With the various swinging techniques executed simultaneously you will be able to part your way through the crowd and get to a safe spot.
What sets Shuny Bee apart is his ability to make the art of nunchaku accessible to all, regardless of age or experience His passion for the martial arts is infectious, and his dedication to his students’ progress is unparalleled
Shuny Bee’s unique teaching style combines traditional techniques with modern methods, ensuring that each student can achieve their goals In the hands of a master like Shuny Bee, the nunchaku transcends its role as a weapon It becomes a tool for personal growth, a means of connecting with history, and a way to cultivate a balanced and disciplined life
Shuny Bee has authored a comprehensive book on the use and practice of the Nunchaku. The book “The Way of the Nunchaku” and DVD Dynamic Nunchaku, illustrates the use of Nunchaku more as a street survival weapon than for entertainment purposes.
For those seeking to embark on a journey of physical and mental mastery, learning from Shuny Bee offers an unparalleled opportunity to delve into the exciting world of nunchaku

THE HEALING TOUCH
The Lung & Large Intestine
The Lung (LU) and Large Intestine (LI) meridians are paired in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Japanese Shiatsu because they work together as complementary aspects of the body’s energy flow.
In TCM, and Japanese Shiatsu the lung and large intestine are considered to be part of the Metal element, representing purification and release.
Lung Meridian (LU)
• The Lung meridian is responsible for governing respiration and controlling the intake of energy from the air. It’s involved in the function of the respiratory system, the immune system, and the distribution of protective energy around the body.
The Lung meridian runs from the chest, through the inner arm, and ends at the thumb.
• It is also associated with emotions such as grief and the ability to “let go.”
Large Intestine Meridian (LI)
• The Large Intestine meridian governs the excretion of waste from the body. It deals with letting go of what is no longer needed, both physically and emotionally.
• This meridian runs from the index finger, up the arm, and to the side of the nose.
• Like the Lung meridian, it’s also associated with the Metal element and complements the Lung meridian by helping to rid the body of toxins, much like the lung releases carbon dioxide.
August 2024 / Vol 1 - No 6
The Pairing in Shiatsu
In Shiatsu, these meridians are treated together because of their yin-yang relationship:
• The Lung meridian is yin, representing the internal aspect of energy (intake, purification, and protection).
• The Large Intestine meridian is yang, representing external, active processes (excretion and release). Together, they form a holistic system that maintains the balance between taking in new energy (Lung) and eliminating waste (Large Intestine).
This duality mirrors the physical functions of breathing and digestion and the emotional balance of holding on and letting go.
The connection between the lungs and the large intestine is a foundational principle in modern shiatsu techniques, emphasizing the holistic nature of the human body. By understanding and manipulating these interconnected pathways, practitioners can promote not only physical health but also emotional and energetic balance. This approach underscores the importance of viewing the body as an i ntegrated system, rather than isolated parts, which is a core tenet of shiatsu therapy.

WARRIOR WISDOM
By Bohdi Sanders
The True Essence of Martial Arts
Martial arts are often portrayed as incredible fighting skills in highoctane action movies or super-fast, gymnastic moves in competitive sports, but true martial arts possess a depth far beyond that of physical combat or some sports competition.
To the uninitiated, it might seem like a mere collection of techniques for selfdefense or competition, or a way to achieve physical fitness. However, at its core, true martial arts are a profound journey of selfmastery, encompassing not just the body, but also the mind and spirit.
Self-discipline is the most fundamental aspect of true martial arts
It goes far beyond the ability to adhere to a training regimen True self-discipline in martial arts means the relentless pursuit of self-improvement It requires a commitment to practice regularly, push beyond one ’ s limits, and embrace the process of growth, despite the inevitable setbacks and plateaus It encompasses the spirit of kaizen constant, never-ending improvement in your spirit, mind and body.
This applies to every aspect of life. It is the patience cultivated while learning a difficult move, the humility required to accept corrections, and the perseverance to keep going in the face of challenges; these traits are useful in life as well as in the dojo. True martial artists learn that genuine selfmastery is not about conquering others but about conquering yourself.
Martial arts foster a unique harmony between the spirit, mind, and body. Every movement in martial arts, whether a punch, kick, or block, results from intense focus and self-control. To execute a technique correctly, a martial artist must be fully present and focused, mindful but not in one ’ s mind. You must practice your techniques until you are able to enter a state of mushin mind, no mind.
This is a connection between the spirit, mind, and body, where your spirit controls your movements without interference from the mind. It is a heightened awareness that can only be achieved through years of practice.
This heightened awareness can lead to a meditative state, often called “in the zone, ” where you respond without thinking about each move first The mind is free from distractions in this state, and the body moves effortlessly
This flow state is not just a byproduct of many years of martial arts training but is one of its ultimate goals It represents a blending of action, awareness, and mindfulness, where the martial artist acts with complete presence and efficiency, without any interference from the mind.
The simple way to understand this higher state of mastery is to think about driving a car. When you first begin driving, you are kind of nervous, thinking about everything you must do, much like a beginning martial arts student.
You have to consciously think about when to break, how hard to break, to put on your turn signal when turning, to check in your rear-view mirror, etc.
But after years of experience, you simply get in your car and drive; you do all those things without having to mentally remind yourself to do them, without even thinking about them.
If a car pulls out in front of you or cuts you off, you respond automatically, without having to think about what to do first. You simply respond, smoothly and effortlessly, because you have trained yourself to respond to such situations through years of experience and practice. That is the state of mushin mind no mind.
While self-defense is absolutely a major part of martial arts, their true essence is not about violence or aggression, but rather, awareness, self-discipline, and self-mastery. The true martial artist understands that the most effective way to win a fight is to avoid it altogether
“The wise warrior avoids the battle.” Sun Tzu
While we do train to be able to fight and defend ourselves, that is not the highest essence of true martial arts. Authentic martial arts teach self-discipline, selfcontrol and the importance of de-escalating potential conflicts. The true master understands how to avoid the fight before there is a fight; he wins without his enemy knowing he has been defeated.
While he is able to defend himself with powerfully destructive techniques, if he has no other choice, this is always his last resort. As Master Gichin Funakoshi taught, “The correct understanding of karate and its proper use is karate-do. One who truly trains in this way [the way of karate] and understands karate-do is never easily drawn into a fight.”
The true martial arts master develops selfconfidence through his self-discipline. He trains until his spirit, mind, and body are one, and this results in a demeanor that naturally diffuses tension or de-escalates a potential violent confrontation. The master knows the true essence of the martial arts lies not in the ability to physically dominate others, but in the mastery and integration of his spirit, mind, and body, and the ability to maintain a calm self-assurance in the face of provocation
The true master understands how to avoid the fight before there is a fight; he wins without his enemy knowing he has been defeated.
Bohdi Sanders
The essence of martial arts lies in the understanding that it is a lifelong journey of self-discovery, self-discipline, and growth. Unlike other many other pursuits, the practice of authentic martial arts has no finish line; it is simply one with life. Master Funakoshi taught, “When you look at life, think in terms of karate; remember that karate is not only karate it is life. Miyamoto Musashi taught this same principle several hundred years earlier, stating,
“The true science of martial arts means practicing them in such a way that they will be useful at any time, and to teach them in such a way that they will be useful in all things.”
There is always a deeper level of understanding, a more refined technique, or a greater sense of inner peace to be attained. This never-ending pursuit of improvement is the essence of all true martial arts. The beginner thinks martial arts is only about fighting and self-defense; but those who truly understand the deeper aspects of the martial arts understand its true essence. True martial arts are far more than a collection of techniques for competition, exercise, or self-defense. They are a way of life, a philosophy that integrates spiritual, mental, and physical growth The hidden essence of martial arts is, ultimately, the essence of self-mastery As Plato taught over 2,500 years ago, “The first and greatest victory is to conquer yourself ”

Hojojutsu is the traditional Japanese martial art of restraining a person using cord or rope. Encompassing many different materials, techniques and methods from many different schools, Hojojutsu is quintessentially a Japanese art that is a unique product of Japanese history and culture. It is the beautiful and peculiar art of restraining someone using (often brightly colored) cord. It is rarely practiced outside of Japan and is an ancient strand of martial art with a rich and complex history. As a martial arts practice, Hojojutsu is seldom, if ever, taught on its own but as part of a curriculum under the aegis of the body of study encompassed by a larger school of bugei or budo, often as an advanced study in jujutsu. Hojojutsu techniques and methods are seldom demonstrated outside of Japan.Shihan Allen Woodman has trained over 20 years in Japan and is the Chief Instructor at the Dento Teki Na Dojo, the Kokusai Karate Do Renmei Hombu Dojo in Bronx, New York. Sensei Allen Woodman offers this book on the traditional martial art of Hojojutsu. Almost every Great Warrior Society in history - from the ancient warriormystics, Ninja, and Samurai, to modernday warriors - have used meditation to get powerful results in the battlefield.
