Basic Eligibility criteria - The aspiring candidate who wishes to become a migration agent must meet some criteria for age, citizenship, educational qualification, history and integrity. The eligibility criteria for becoming a migration professional are: ●

Age - The candidate must be 18 years of age or older at the time of applying for registered migration agent.

Citizenship - The candidate must be an Australian citizen or Australian permanent citizen or Newzealand citizen with a special category visa.

Have knowledge of migration law - The candidate must have proof of education in migration law. This proof can be a degree or diploma in Australian migration law. You can also demonstrate your knowledge of migration law by holding a diploma in migration law from TAFE institutes or Technical and Further Education Institutions. The migration agent course offered by TAFE is a short term course on the basis of which you can also gain admission to a full-time bachelor program in universities.

Proficiency in the English language - The candidate must be proficient in the English language.

National Police check - The candidate must have a National Police certificate to verify that they don't have any criminal conviction in Australia.

Application fees - The application fee depends upon the type of registration the candidate applies for. There are also other costs associated with your registration. The candidate must know which registration category applies to them. If you choose the wrong category, OMARA will not refund the fee.

Application fees charges for different categories are: ●

General – initial application It will cost AUD1760.

Non-commercial – initial application The cost for this category is AUD160.

●

General – repeat application The cost for a General - repeat application is AUD1595.

●

Non-commercial – repeat application If you register for this category you will have to pay AUD105.

The Other cost may include the National Police check, a professional library subscription, professional indemnity insurance etc., Time that OMARA takes in assessing your application - The average time that OMARA takes in assessing your application depends upon whether you are applying for the first time or re-register. First time application takes 8 weeks and re-registration takes 4 weeks. You can reregister up to 2 months before your registration ends.

After you apply - There are only two aspects after you apply for the migration agent with OMARA ●

Your application is approved - If you fulfil all the criteria, OMARA will approve your application and notify you by email. Once your application is approved, OMARA will include you on the register of migration agents.

Your application is rejected - OMARA will let you know after receiving your application.

If you do not hear from OMARA within 8 weeks, you check your application status in the secure portal. In case your application is refused, OMARA will notify you by email with the reason for rejection. They will provide you with an opportunity to show them how you might meet the requirement. If you still fail, then your application will be rejected.

You cannot become a registered migration agent in case: ● ● ● ●

OMARA has refused your registration within 12 months of applying; If your previous registration has been cancelled within 5 years of applying; If you have been barred previously and the barred period is not expired yet; If you have been previously suspended from registering and your suspension period is not expired yet.
