The ICS Student Council committee has introduced a new electing system for the upcoming 2023 student council election
In the past, student council elections were held by a traditional voting system in which the secondary students voted for one candidate for each position of president, vice president, treasurer, etc… However, over time a major issue has surfaced relating to the traditional voting system.
Over the years it was thought that the traditional voting system was primarily a popularity test, and the voting system was not fair. There is no doubt that the student council have a great responsibility not only in making decisions and organizing major events, but also making sure that our voices as students are heard. Following this great responsibility, the traditional voting system has faced many problems with electives not putting enough effort into their work.
Last year there were some minor modifications of the electing system due to the pandemic, that resulted in a no voting system and any student that wanted to be a part of the council could be. However, this year they have modified the electing system even more so that there are specific positions for each student on the council. Furthermore, the student council committee has also introduced a new member-electing system for the upcoming 2023 student council. The biggest change from the previous voting system could be outlined as excluding the votes of secondary students as well as having specific titles for each member of the council. This allows each student to have the full responsibility of one section and results in the duties being divided equally Unquestionably, these changes are expected to bring many positive outcomes as it is now completely up to the current student council members and the staff members to elect the new student council
According to the newly published “ICS Student Ambassadors Protocol 2022-23” the newly formed student council will initially include 6positions
• Environmental Committee Chairperson
• LGBTI Committee Chairperson
• Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee Chairperson
• Events & School Spirit Committee Chairperson
• Well-being Committee Chairperson
• Social Impact Committee Chairperson
Candidates are expected to submit an application applying for each of the positions which will then be reviewed by the current student council members and staff members Through this process, the candidates who fulfill the requirements are once again called in for an interview process where each candidate will face questions posed from the current members of the student council and staff members
Despite the fact that this newly organized election process is believed to alleviate past problems, there are still many areas for discussion and modification to ensure that the right candidates are elected for each position While many students do not have a big interest in student council, their importance must be highlighted as they are the voice of the students and should put their full effort into making sure that our voices are heard
On the 25 November, we sat down with Mr Bromham, the Head of ICS, and asked him a couple of questions regarding his duties at our school, personal experience in high school in his own blooming years, and a variety of other differing subjects.
“Coming here I knew that it was already a great school. They have great exam results, with lots going on before the pandemic, and most importantly some wonderful students. Really, it was about building on that, and taking everything to the next step. I do think if you make the staff the best they can, then that feeds into you having the best school you can.
So it was really about supporting the staff, and giving them everything they need. The other thing is, with the students… it's been such a strange couple of years since I arrived, as I arrived just as the pandemic was starting, but I want to see the students do much, much more. I think at the moment ICS feels a bit like, the students come, and they get their education, but it's not really their school. I want the school to feel far more like it’s the students' school, where they are pushing things forward and they're telling us what they want and how things should be. We're just here working for you guys in your school. That's what I wanted it to feel like, and this is a great first step.”
Did you enjoy going to school when you were younger?
“I loved school For a long time, my dream was to get qualified as a teacher, then go back and teach in my old school, but my old school is not there anymore I went to an all-boys school, which was a bit weird, especially looking back, but I played lots of rugby, I had lots of good friends there It wasn't a school like this though, but it was a great school Great time”
If you were a Microsoft office program which one would you be and why?
Now that the winter holidays are right around the corner, how many days in advance do you pack your suitcase and what is your strategy behind that?
“I do have a strategy Going back to what I just said about being a Mathematician I've got the best idea ever and I don't know why everyone doesn't do this! I have a packing list on my phone I add to it every time [ ] so when it's time to pack, I don't pack early but I've got my list here My packing list with socks right at the top [ ] I don't take everything that's on there, but I know that's everything I could possibly need so I don't forget anything I use it on every single trip”
You're hosting a dinner party and you have to invite three famous people, dead or alive, who would they be and why?
“I think about that quite a lot Stephen Fry is an easy one He's a British well, he’s comedian, he's an author, he's an actor, he's done all sorts of things I'm a huge fan Did you hear of the Harry Potter audio books? He’s the guy who reads them in English I’d love to meet him [ ] Gareth Thomas is a bit of a hero of mine He was a Welsh rugby player who then came out as being gay [ ] He came from a similar background to me and I know how hard that must have been for him to come out as gay, when he was still playing, and to have that bravery and really stand up for what he believes in and what he is So, he is a big hero of mine And John Lennon, I suppose Certainly a big Beatles fan I’d love to meet John Lennon Have you seen the film Yesterday? Do you know the bit where he goes and meets John Lennon on the beach? That always makes me cry, every time I see it John Lennon is big influence in my life”
Would you consider yourself to be a cat or a dog person?
“Cat I've got a cat I love my cat I have a wife, three daughters, also got two sisters, I have loads of women in my life, and my cat is the only boy He sits and watches football with me [ ] I do like dogs, but I love cats”
If you saw someone steal a can of beans at el Mercadona would you report it?
“Oh my god I suppose I've got to say yes, haven’t I? I’ve got to say yes I don't really know I actually once saw, when I was in Glastonbury, years ago, Glastonbury Festival, somebody come out of my friend's tent, obviously complete stranger, they had stolen something I knew they'd stolen something I just froze! I absolutely froze I didn't know what to do, and I let him walk away So I don't know I'd love to think I would but yeah, these are the situations that challenge us It’s about being principled It's about doing the right thing. But the honest answer is I don't know.”
How would you rate this interview out of 10? “10 of course I’ve enjoyed it I’ve probably revealed too much”
We interviewed one of our ICS Drama teachers, Ms Munn, to get to know her and her opinions on ICS teachers better To follow up on this interview, we also asked one of our PE teachers and GLLs, Mr Adams
If you had to play one song every time you entered a room, which one would it be and why?
"
MsPattMunn HeadofMYPDramaandDPTheatreArtsI love so many songs If I had to play one song every time I walked into a room it would be the Justin Timberlake song “can't stop the feeling”, I'd play that one because it just puts me in the most amazing mood ever"

"Math My dad was a Math teacher so I would hope that it runs down the family Or if not I'd probably like to do music I love listening to music"
Who is your childhood and present idol?
"My current idol is LBJ, LeBron James From my childhood I had a lot of different kind of influences Especially from black culture like Malcolm X and Martin Luther King I still carry a lot of their values, but I would say more relevant up to date could be Lebron James He manages to conduct himself in today’s world, in a spectacular way"
Aortic stenosis is a valvular disease that occurs when the lower left chamber in the heart and the aorta does not open completely. As a result, blood flow is reduced from the heart to the aorta, and thus, reducing blood flow to tissues around the whole body. The condition emerges as a result of different factors such as: congenital heart defect (where children are born with an aortic valve with less than three bicuspid valves,) calcium build-up on the valve, and rheumatic fever (untreated strep throat scarring the aortic valve.)
Aortic stenosis affects approximately 1.5 million people in the US and is associated with a 5-year survival rate of 20% if untreated. Due to the severe nature of the disease, doctors and biomechanical engineers at the postdoctoral association in MIT are working to develop a soft model of a robotic sleeve that mimics the left ventricular pressure and blood flow of a specific patient with aortic stenosis. By recreating the conditions suffered by that specific patient with this model, the later design of patient specific devices in clinics can be improved.
Dr Caglar Ozturk and Luca Rosalia explain that by developing patient-specific robotic models, the performance, durability, and long-term safety of the prosthetics in medical clinics can be improved Their main objective when designing this sleeve is to tune a patient’s hemodynamic changes with the prosthetic sleeve
The issue that the MIT team is trying to solve is the lack of tunability with the patient’s changes in traditional pumps or pulse duplicators Never done before, recreating the hemodynamic conditions (how blood flows through arteries) of aortic stenosis, in a specific manner with personalised selection, makes it possible to treat this condition more effectively in clinics This is due to the 3-D design of the sleeve allowing on a frequent basis, showing doctors the progression of the disease and alert clinics if the treatment is heading in the correct direction
After successfully testing the 3-D printed sleeve prototype, the team seems to be heading in a positive direction with more trials about to occur in 2023 In order to test out the reliability of the robotic sleeve model created, the clinical parameters (such as computerised tomography scans) in patients with aortic stenosis were compared with the evaluation with those obtained by the robotic sleeve mimicking the condition
As the laborious, and eventful year comes to end, it’s no longer too early to put up our excessively lit trees and play the same classic Christmas songs on loop Sadly, but expectedly, and to our collective dismay, Netflix home pages have been plagued by an absurd number of rom-com holiday movies that barely scrape ‘average’ Though not to worry, I’m here to remind you that the great (recent) Christmas movie classics are still there, somewhere in the mass of Hallmark-esque horror, and that some are (subjectively objectively) better than others As for criteria, I’ve selected these based on:
Plot (does it actually stand out?), Overall Christmas visuals and feeling (is everything red, green, and white? Would watching it in mid-March feel morally wrong?), How inclined I’d be to handcraft an ornament of the poster and hang it on my tree
Honestly, this one just came to mind immediately for no real reason Movies like The Nutcracker (2001) and A Christmas Carol (2008), A Perfect Christmas (2011) (especially this one) are weirdly but incontestably wonderful holiday movies thanks to their simplicity in storyline and visual, but vibrant colour and mood.
Admittedly, most of these are just Barbified Christmas tales that already have their own movies and sneakily aimed at a reliable audience, but there’s just something about the way the songs and barely dimensional characters fit into the stories that are so satisfying to watch
For the only rom-com worthy enough of being on this list, Love Actually makes for a pleasant experience The main issue I have with it is that it’s problematic in terms of bad queer representation, and character and power dynamic, but we’ll look past it for now
It’s a sweet movie characterised by dynamic storytelling, delving into ten different stories and aspects of love which resonate with viewers It includes unrequited love, interracial love, love across languages and countries, love despite status, amongst many more variates, all portrayed by a remarkable cast and within a lively Christmas context. For its length, it’s an admirable effort to illustrate a varied love landscape
I’d be lying if I said this wasn’t the first Christmas movie every 21st century kid watched Jim Carrey’s portrayal of The Grinch was undoubtably a display of immaculate storytelling, only elevating Dr Seuss’ iconic character and his story It explores themes of hate, isolation, and acceptance of the fact that Christmas spirit comes from within the hearts of those who come together through love It’s loaded with one-liners and memorable scenes It’s hard not to love this one – it’s over the top, bright and iconic, just like Christmas itself It’s a staple, what more can I say
Summed-up, Elf encapsulates all the Christmas tropes in one hilarious movie It has romance, belonging and the search for a long-lost family all portrayed through the lens of Buddy the Elf’s naivety and charm, which Will Ferrell captured skilfully Very obviously human but raised by elves after crawling into Santa’s sack in an orphanage, his story begins in the cartoonish North Pole, convinced he is an elf like the others, but then heads off to find his birth father The movie also gets bonus points for being set in New York City, because who doesn’t want to imagine themselves in the festive dreamworld that is NYC at Christmastime Buddy’s contagiously positive attitude, perseverance and journey to love is inspiring, as is his adventure and exploration of a 21st century world he’s never known. We should all take his advice and "Treat every day like Christmas"
Where does one even begin to describe the absolute plaidfilled, heart-warming, and comedic brilliance that is this John Hughes classic Not only was it the highest-grossing Christmas film for twenty-eight years after its release, but it’s easily the most quotable and memorable of all modern holiday movies The premise of the story itself is seemingly basic; Kevin, the witty, relatable, and frequently hated-on kid is accidentally left behind at the McAllister’s charming house to fend for himself against two moronic burglars while the rest of his family go to Paris But it’s simplicity in both visual and plot is what gives it its signature charm From Kevin’s mischievously playful personality, somewhat relatability, and cleverly crafted plan to protect his home to the underlying themes of compassion and forgiveness in which he discovers the true meaning of love and family, the light-hearted and touching story never ceases to be timeless.
In San Casciano dei Bagni, Tuscany, Italy, some Italian architects found 24 bronze statues incredibly well preserved by the water under the muddy ruins of an ancient Roma bath Most of them apparently date back to 2nd Century BC to 1st Century AD and are said to be 2,300 years old
2nd Century BC to 1st Century AD was an era of “great transformation in ancient Tuscany” and “an era of great conflict”, according to the Culture Ministry, as that was the time where Tuscany converted from Etruscan rule to Roman rule
The statues, which are bronze figures of ancient Roman gods, were found beside more than 5,000 silver, gold, and bronze coins, along with a few statuettes, also made of bronze.
"It is a very significant, exceptional finding," stated Jacopo Tabolli, who is a professor from the University for Foreigners in Siena and led the dig. Tabolli speculates that the statues were put there as some sort of ritual. "You give to the water because you hope that the water gives something back to you," he said. But according to him, the statues were first used to embellish a sanctuary.
"Certainly one of the most significant bronze finds ever made in the history of the ancient Mediterranean", according to Massimo Osanna, the director general of the state museums of Italy, who said that this discovery must be the most important one since 1972, when the Riace Bronzes were discovered.
The Culture Minister, Gennaro Sangiuliano, stated that this "confirms once again that Italy is a country of immense and unique treasures". The statues have gone to a restoration lab, but soon, they will be put on display in a museum in San Casciano.

Social media has been a menace to society since the year it dominated our cell phones Its carefully planted traps and tactics around its platforms, push everyone's shutdown button and sends them into a robotic, controlled, inhumane state Would you want to live in a world where you have no control over what you see and consume? Like an invisible hand condemns you to keep reaching out to the direct source of your brainwashing?
Turns out, you're already living in it
According to a new study by Harvard University, self-disclosure on social networking sites lights up the same part of the brain that also ignites when taking an addictive substance Moreover, the addictive nature of social media has damaged the mental health and self-esteem of millions of teenagers and adults world-wide Its superficial content, like dramatically edited photos to resemble the 'conventionally attractive' person, has proven to be detrimental to one's mental health It triggers comparison with others, it can raise doubts about self-worth, potentially leading to issues such as anxiety and depression
"Look,” says Katie, a 16-year-old in high school, scrolling slowly through her Instagram feed “See: pretty coffee, pretty girl, cute cat, beach trip It’s all like that Everyone looks like they’re having the best day ever, all the time” The dangerously unrealistic expectations of success and beauty are everywhere now, and can easily infect the young, immature and not fully developed mind of a young teenager.
I myself have fallen victim to these expectations and I must say, it is not enjoyable. My life began to revolve around my hair, my skin, my body, and my lifestyle; my brain was too busy with aimlessly criticizing what looked back at it that it lost sense of what was ahead of it. My own future was at risk now. I began to fail exams more frequently, I was too insecure to socialize anymore, I disconnected from the outside world and became exactly what those companies wanted: An empty vessel with nothing better to do than to come back for more.
However, even as brainless as a zombie, I managed to wake up from my trance and reclaim my consciousness again. I've decided to take matters into my own hands. For example, by purposefully reducing my screen-time and ignoring the banal posts on my feed, my mental health has drastically improved. I no longer care what people think of me or what I look like every second of the day–I even started to care about my appearance purely for my own liking and benefit! I have become a better person than I was when I began to succumb to social media.
I am writing to you to warn you of the dangers of the new developing world. If you are a parent to a tween or teenager, safely monitor what they see on their phones and encourage them to disconnect from time to time Re-evaluate how much time you spend on your phone yourself! Otherwise, you might meet the same fate as many others and cave into the sadistic manipulation these corporations want you to fall for
Don't take your life for granted

A look into the grade 11 ICS basketball team and their aims for this school year!
The ICS senior basketball team look to find success as many Grade 11 students return from an ICS basketball hiatus for their last season The team hopes to dominate the league and are feeling as confident as ever coming from an extremely successful past season and the addition of new players that will potentially have key roles From the 21-22 basketball season, there have been a few players, like Gabriel Canavan and Andre Arcuri, that have parted ways with the organization; however, the team doesn’t seem very preoccupied with such losses as replacements for them have been found with the addition of superstar Ignacio Vigil, Oskar Kann, Lluis coming from Frankfurt and long-time ICS veteran Jeppe Skarnvad The players seem confident, the coach seems confident, but the main question remains, are they truly physically and mentally prepared?
As mentioned before, this season has brought upon the return of many ICS legends, among them Ignacio Vigil and although he is a talented player, he looks to bring more than his 168 ppg average to the team this year. Seven months ago, amidst the negotiations to bring him back, Vigil stated that he would return under the condition that basketball practices were extended to 3 sessions a week plus an additional non mandatory scrimmage. Despite many groans and complaints coming from what were to become his future teammates, Coach Adams found the idea fitting and took advantage of this situation to introduce a new practice structure that would cover all key aspects for the upcoming season. These practice sessions will be on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, Mondays being labeled as fitness in preparation for the physicality of this older league, Wednesdays labeled as skills where the players will work on their individual weaknesses and finally Fridays will be reserved for game like scenarios as the players will put into practice the skills and fitness gained over the week.
“Dog mentality*proceeds to bark*” stated Oskar Kann, captain of the team when asked on the team’s mentality. All the pieces seem to be there for a successful season, but will they be able to capitalize and send a message to any team that crosses their path and immortalize their legacy?
An
All ICS football teams have started their season in a spectacular way, with the cadete team winning both their games, 4-1 and 2-0 respectively
The first game saw the grade 11s score all goals, with one goal from Gregan Palaganas, and a hat-trick from Andre Arcuri, who celebrated in classic brazilian fashion, showing off his dance moves to the enthusiastic supporters who had gathered to watch The ICS Juvenil team also matched this performance, winning 4-2, with two goals from Dongjoon Ka, and one each by Javier Sainz Ribera and Fran Sigman, all in grade 12
In gameweek two, the cadete team faced off against La Pergola FC, and despite having no substitutes, won 2-0, with goals from Odin Gedde-Dahl in grade 11 and Duarte Diniz in grade
10 The juvenil team were not as fortunate, and faced off against a much better opposition, and even though they scored 3 goals in the opening 10 minutes, ended up drawing 3-3
This is all building up to the first big ICS derby on January 15, when the two ICS teams will face off against each other The ICS juvenil, being the older, are clear favourites and are expected to win comfortably Still, it’s important not to underestimate the younger and hungrier cadete team, who are expected to put up a good fight
The game is set to kick off on January 15 at the polideportivo Jose Caballero in Alcobendas We encourage you to come and support your team!
On another note, the girls juvenil futsal team, joined with the Futsal Sanse club, also started their season, and won 2-1 this weekend, with a goal from Emma Fernandez in grade 11, and an assist from Leti Polastro, also in grade 11.
The game was extremely close, but in the end, the girls prevailed, showing great heart. They are at the top of their league, but will they be able to keep it up?

The season of soccer here in Spain never ends, there is always something happening!
The FIFA World Cup tournament is the most renowned and significant global soccer competition and is the largest competition for a single sport Following the initiation of the World Cup in Qatar, there were some cases of players and coaches leaving Spain for 50 days which placed the national soccer activity at a standstill
The people of Spain are passionate, proud, and devoted to their sporting nation According to a study, around 85% of Spain’s population are sports enthusiasts It was found that Spanish people watch or read sport-related content for around 101 hours a week, which is 90 minutes per day
Between 2008 and 2012, the Spanish national soccer team was seen as the greatest in the world Many of the best players in the world have been drawn to Spain as it has achieved a lot For example, they won the World Cup once in South Africa in 2010 and have 16 appearances in the 22 tournaments of the FIFA World Cup. The team is also among the most active in the World Cup finals. On top of the joy and pride those accomplishments bring to Spain, the soccer has had a significantly positive impact on Spain's economy, by 2015 the sport's professional revenue accounted for 0.75% of Spain's GDP (Gross Domestic Product).
Having recently moved to Spain, I'm impressed by how significant soccer is here. This is quite a phenomenon! As a result, I was curious as to where this passion for the sport originated from, and found out that soccer fans' joy and emotions are reminiscent of prehistoric tribal instincts. Being a member of a tribe allows you to receive support and protection from other members, which increases your chances of survival. The tribe sends "soldiers" to fight battles, and “a win” benefits the entire tribe. Admiring your tribe's strong warriors is similar to today's fans praising their team's players. The thrill of a victory is as real as the disappointment of a defeat. Supporting your soccer team with other fans in a stadium is as exciting as participating or watching a battle to protect your tribe.
In conclusion, it is a great way to release emotions and become a part of a larger group, which is becoming increasingly rare in today's world. I believe that supporting any sports team is a worthwhile experience for everyone. Good luck to Spain in the FIFA World Cup 2022!
