The Diploma Programme Committee Purpose: Strengthen the work of the heads of the programme (programme development, professional development and school services) by providing different perspectives and by providing advice aiming to develop the Diploma Programme in accordance with the IB mission, following IB principles and policies.

Prince George’s County Public Schools Objective: provide diagnostic and consulting services to improve the delivery of the programme at the 5 DP schools in the District.

 Stage 1: identify challenges.  Stage 2: one day visit to each school by an IB team.  Stage 3: comprehensive report with findings, commendations and recommendations for the school and by subject area. Page 18

Chicago Public Schools Objective: customize professional development to work on maths, history and science continuum to revert the weak performance of the schools in those areas.

 Workshops for teachers to define collaboratively the students’ graduation profile on each subject.  Backward planning of the contents and skills to be taught from year 9 to achieve the graduation profile.  Leadership workshop for heads of school and administrators Page 19

Ecuadorian government project Objective: July 2012: 18 authorized schools  2005: Raul Vallejos, Ministry of Education: first contact contact with the IB  February 2006: agreement to implement the DP in one public school on each province  January 2012: Rafael Correa, president of Ecuador decides to implement the DP in 500 schools in the next 5 years.  62 schools submitted application for candidacy Page 20

Buenos Aires city project Objective: to bring the DP to one public school in each borough Buenos Aires city, to bring international education to these schools.

Heads of 25 schools will be trained in August, out of which 14 will apply for candidacy.

New DP courses • Global Politics HL/SL: 2012–14 pilot 2015 first teaching to critically engage with new perspectives and approaches to politics in order to better make sense of our changing world (group 3)

• Sports, Health & Exercise Science (SL): 2012 – 14  incorporates the disciplines of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and nutrition in sport, health and exercise (group 4)

CAS sampling Nov11/May12: main findings  The international perspective of the CAS programme at the school needs to be further developed.  The school is starting CAS before the first year of the Diploma Programme.  The school does not provide funding to support the delivery of an appropriate and varied CAS programme.  There is no evidence of goal setting at the beginning of the CAS programme. Unannounced examination inspections Nov11/May12: main findings  Before leaving the examination room the invigilator did not place the candidates’ answer cover sheets/scripts in a plastic envelope provided by the IB Assessment Centre (except where an examination is split between rooms).  A large working clock was not placed in view of all candidates.  The start and finish times of the examination(s) were not written on a board/flip-chart in clear view of all candidates.  A copy of the poster Conduct of the examinations: notice to candidates was not on display in or outside the examination room. Professional development requirements at evaluation Over the period under review, the school must have a plan that will ensure its compliance with the following requirements related to IB-recognized professional development. • Head of school (or designee) if appointed during the period under review must participate in an appropriate IB workshop. • Diploma Programme teachers, theory of knowledge (TOK) teachers, creativity, action, service (CAS) coordinator and Diploma Programme coordinator appointed during the period under review must participate in an IB category 1 or 2 workshop related to their subject or role. • At least one Diploma Programme subject teacher per subject/TOK/CAS coordinator must participate in a relevant IB workshop if the subject or course has been reviewed during the period under review and a new guide has been published.
