Very much alive and well

Sales are up and reports of the death of trade exhibitions have been greatly exaggerated

The latest sales figures will make welcome reading for the sector: sales in March and the first quarter of the year for both furniture and flooring were higher than in 2024, with flooring showing growth far in excess of what was generally anticipated. We’ll find out towards the end of this month how much ONS revises them.

If anyone had reservations about the importance of exhibitions and the opportunity they provide to see new products in the flesh and talk to those behind those products, Salone put all doubts firmly back in the box where they belong (as Heimtextil did in January).

There had been some concern in the run-up to the show, and sister events Euroluce, Workplace 3.0 and SaloneSatellite (not to mention the seemingly millions of events across Milan), that fears of economic turmoil would deter visitors. This proved misplaced as more than 300,000 made their way to Rho –comfortably on par with 2023, when Euroluce last took place. China retained its position as the leading visiting country, with the US number eight and the UK twelfth. You’ll find the Salone coverage later in this issue.

Many thanks to all of you who have voted in this year’s Interiors Monthly Awards. However, some of you are wasting your votes by not including your contact details. As I said in April, without these details your vote is invalid and – almost as importantly – you can’t be entered into the hat for the Fortnum & Mason hamper.

And to make it clear, you cannot vote for your own company or that of your employer and you must be directly employed in the interiors sector (so, no marketing or advertising agencies, for example). The place to go to say who is the best is www. interiorsmonthly.co.uk/voting-form.

All valid votes are counted (they arrive in my inbox), so gather your thoughts and let me know.

CRUK begins rebranding

Carpet Recycling UK has begun the transition to its new UK Sustainable Flooring Alliance branding.

‘This change will better represent our commitment to the wider flooring sector, which still very much encompasses carpets and textile flooring, but also resilient flooring such as

vinyl and LVT,’ says Cathie Clarke, UKSFA ceo.

‘This rebrand is not just a name change – it marks a fundamental moment in our mission to influence policy, shape the future of responsible flooring sustainability and ensure the industry takes charge of its own environmental impact.

Decision day for TOFS staff

The immediate future of The Original Factory Shop will be decided on 14 May. The fate of half its stores is in doubt, and about 1,000 jobs.

Made in France

Homewares brand La Redoute has debuted the latest reality TV star-backed interiors collection. It has collaborated with Made in Chelsea star, author and podcaster Louise Thompson in a 100-piece collection.

‘It feels like such a full circle moment to go from being a La Redoute

customer to curating my own edit,’ says Thompson.

‘Everything within the collection is a little piece of me, from everyday staples to dreamy statement decor I’d envision in my home. I hope anyone who explores the range and injects it into their home or wardrobe feels the same.’

Owner Modella Capital is looking for major rent cuts, while looking to return to more opportunistic buying. It wants to renegotiate rents at 88 of the 178 stores as part of a company voluntary arrangement (CVA).

Depending on the vote, ‘TOFS will adjust its store estate […], return to the deal-centric stock and purchasing strategy it is famous for, invest in online channels, and realign its support centre and logistics operations,’ says a statement.

‘Our plan aims to put the business on sustainable footing, protecting as many jobs as possible.’

Morgan takes top role at F&B

Dreams has added to its Feather & Black store portfolio and turned to Sarah Morgan for leadership. The former Pep&Co and Wiggle commercial director and Tesco and George at Asda executive has become the chain’s general manager, reporting to Jonathan Hirst, Dreams ceo.

The group opened the Altrincham, Greater Manchester branch of Dreams on 4 April, which contains a 2,300sqft F&B area. This will be followed by a 3,200sqft F&B space within Dreams’ Bracknell store, opening later this spring. This will increase the number of outlets to 11.

‘After five successful years with Feather & Black as part of the Dreams family, we’re excited to be investing in this next phase of its growth. With Sarah at the helm, we’re confident the brand will continue to serve a growing market of consumers looking for luxury bedroom furniture and bedding,’ says Hirst.

‘As a long-time customer, I understand the special place Feather & Black holds in people’s homes, with the team’s passion and dedication clearly coming through in every product,’ says Morgan. ‘Over the coming months and years, we’ll focus on building on that legacy, offering our customers a range of expertly crafted and beautiful bedroom furniture both online and in-store.

Breathing life: JJ opens third store

Discount furniture retailer

Joseph James has opened its third store. As with its branches in Stretford, Manchester and Stockport –the town’s former 90,000sqft Debenhams store – size is important to the company.

The latest store will occupy the former Wilko branch in St Helens and offer 30,000sqft of retail space

The retailer specialises in buying excess or discontinued stock from other retailers and selling it at a discount to the original price. Founders Joseph Shenton and James Pullen founded the business in 2019 after they left school, aged 18.

‘Joseph James Furniture Outlet’s model of selling branded clearance furniture

requires a large space for any showroom. The 30,000sqft of retail space on offer at this former Wilko store is ideal to home the vast array of furniture that customers have become accustomed to navigating at the other two locations,’ says a statement.

‘This new St Helens site, at any one time, will have for sale approximately 300 sofas, 50 chairs, 50 beds, 65 mattresses, 50 dining tables and 50 sets of dining chairs. All will be available for immediate free delivery and be sold for approximately 30%-70% off their retail price.

‘Joseph James continues to breathe life into large retail stores on the British high street.’

WiFN quartet

Jan Duckworth, Cox & Cox md; Kellie Wyles, DFS head of upholstery and brands; Nic Furlong, Ashley Manor Upholstery and Alexander & James md, and Fara Butt, Shire Beds director will be the Women in Furniture Network panellists for the Manchester Furniture Show event on 7 July.

Zoë Bonser, Clarion Events portfolio director will chair the discussion, covering leadership, challenges in the industry and what’s next for the furniture and interiors market.

Panellists will also explore the recent International Women’s Day theme of Accelerate Action, talking about how the industry can drive meaningful change, break barriers and create a more inclusive and dynamic future for women.

Dexelance moves outdoors

Gervasoni, Meridiani and Axolight parent Dexelance is to buy a controlling stake in outdoor furniture maker Roda.

The further consolidation in the European furniture and lighting sectors will see Dexelance buy a minority stake in Roda before increasing this to a majority holding by an undisclosed date.

Dexelance owns 11 companies and 14 brands across the residential and contract furniture and lighting markets including Gervason, Very Wood, Meridiani, Saba Italia, Gamma Arredamenti, Axolight, Binova and Turri.

It had sales of more than €300m in 2024 and wants to buy more outdoor companies.

Roda has a partnership with Italian luxury brand Missoni to use its fabrics.

Boldness helps lift Dunelm

Bolder designs and outdoor collections helped drive furniture sales at Dunelm in the first quarter. The 200-store chain says furniture ‘performed particularly well’, while its textile offer from rugs to pillows also enjoyed growth.

This helped the retailer boost sales by 6.3% in the 13 weeks to 29 March, with figures reaching £462m. Sales for the nine-month period were 3.7% higher, at £1.356bn.

‘Our elevated product offering continues to inspire customers, with our new Sophie Robinson collaboration offering bolder, more colourful options, giving customers new ideas on how to create a maximalist look across their home. Reflecting the relatively warm spring so far, the performance of our Summer Living ranges has been encouraging, as customers get their gardens ready for summer,’ it says.

‘We remain committed to driving market share gains through growth across all our channels. March saw the opening of Dunelm's 200th store, in Merthyr Tydfil, an exciting milestone, and we continue to see new opportunities, filling “white space” in our physical estate through a variety of store formats. At the same time, we're improving customers' digital experience, including through Click & Collect, which has continued to gain momentum,’ says Nick Wilkinson, Dunelm ceo.

No fairytale Richard Renouf

A defiant customer and odd standards are all in a day’s work

The three little piggies would have been as defiant. Actually, there were 10 little piggies on the bare feet of the red-faced gentleman who met me at the door of his luxury riverside apartment in central London, but the three from the fairytale came to mind when he would not let me in. I sensed that any kind of attempt to persuade him to let me in would be met with considerable resistance and I did not have the puff to blow his door down (although it was open anyway).

My appointment had been booked several weeks before by the property developer who had refurbished his entire apartment. When the customer and his wife moved back in, having been abroad for the course of the works, they made a series of complaints. Each was apparently dealt with to their satisfaction, but then another complaint was made, and then another, and then another. Each seeming more petty than the last, and only made in response to requests for the final payment for the full works.

The customer had made it clear that all visits had to be arranged for 2.30pm on the day I visited, so there were two others attending to carry out repair work. The developer himself had been told not to attend and had been warned I would not be allowed in, but it was worth seeing if the customer would relent when he actually met me. But I was not welcome. ‘They had months to arrange this and only told me you were coming at 12.19pm yesterday!’

I chatted briefly to the concierge who had let me in to the block, just in case the customer had a go at him for not granting him the opportunity to turn me away over the entryphone system. Then I headed back to the cafe where the developer was waiting for news.

The developer produced a copy of an expert’s report that the customer had

sent him. It was by someone I’d met nearly 30 years ago but not since as they do not do reports at the level required for listing as an approved or accredited expert witness. We went through it and found that there was a reference to a British Standard, but no mention of what the standard required. There was also a mention of an industry guide but no quote of anything it said.

As I wrote the guide in question, and sit on the BS committee responsible for said standard, I could sense why it was not quoted, as he did not check the alleged faulty product against any of its requirements. The report’s conclusion (paraphrased) simply said ‘without further investigation the true extent of the causing issues cannot be established 100%. Having inspected this type of complaint thousands of times, my view is that most if not all of the problems… are the responsibility of the developer.’

At this point, two of the others who had attended to carry out work joined us. They had successfully resolved the issues they had gone to look at. Now all that remained was the issue that I had

not been allowed to check.

Two simple lessons here. First, keeping your customer posted, and keeping a record, is vital. The developer’s email trail may, in due course, show that the customer knew of my pending visit long before he would admit. Second, the customer may think he’s being clever, but when cases like this have gone to a hearing, the district judge has usually given such tactics short shrift: they are a very quick way for a customer to reveal their true intentions.

A third lesson may follow. It will depend on whether or not I am able to carry out the checks and comparisons to the relevant standards to expose the subjective nature of the report obtained by the customer. The case may settle before that becomes necessary, but if it doesn’t, there may be an ‘expert’ against whom the customer may raise a complaint when their evidence is shown to be unsubstantiated.

Being bold is all for Roche Bobois and film director Pedro Almodóvar

With its usual flair for presentational theatre, Roche Bobois transformed its city centre showroom to the brightest location of Milan Design Week.

The company has collaborated with Spanish film director Pedro Almodóvar and his muse Rossy de Palma for the Cromatica collection, and de Palma’s capsule range. 75-year old Almodóvar has marked generations with his films, where vibrant colours, shapes and sets play a central role. From fiery reds to deep blues, each work is staged in such a way that the set design acts as a fully fledged character. The Room Next Door was his English language debut last year, starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, winning the Golden Lion award at the Venice film festival.

The Lounge modular sofa, designed by Hans Hopfer, has been reissued specially as a limited edition of 50, signed by Almodóvar. He designed the fabrics, which feature iconic images and posters of his films: Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Volver, Broken Embraces, Talk to Her, Tie Me Up! Tie Me Down!, High Heels and The Flower of My Secret.

In addition to the limited edition, Lounge has also been reissued in a plain fabric version, true to the spirit of the original 1971 design. Lacquered stirrups, available in several colours or tone-ontone, frame the arrangement.

Upgrade

A new Retail Champions Scheme and Code of Practice are coming

The National Bed Federation is to debut an upgraded Retail Champions Scheme for retailers and introduce the sixth version of its audited Code of Practice for members later this year.

The free Retail Champions Scheme will see an optional fee-paying benefits package. The initiative was launched in 2020 for retailers who predominantly stock NBF-approved member brands, with its primary goals to assure consumers that the beds they purchase meet the highest safety standards and to improve consumer awareness concerning the rigorous and independent testing that NBF members undergo as part of the Code of Practice. Existing complimentary benefits include a listing on the Bed Advice UK website and a free POS pack.

The new package not only expands the existing scheme but also aims to enhance support for retailers in an increasingly competitive marketplace.

Retail Champion status is given to stores where at least 50% of beds sourced from the UK and Ireland are from NBF members. Premier Retail Champion status is when 100% of UK and Ireland-sourced beds are manufactured by NBF members. This status reflects a strong commitment to honesty and safety, fostering greater consumer trust.

In a market where consumer choice is abundant, having a strong brand

reputation and access to valuable resources is essential, and the upgraded benefits package, starting from £250 a year, will include expert guidance on the latest product-related legislation, Bed Show VIP access, consumer bed-buying research, assistance with HR issues, health and safety, legal matters, tax and VAT and more.

Recognised as Assured Advice by trading standards, the Code of Practice sets out criteria for ensuring processes and procedures are in place for supplychain scrutiny and regulatory compliance.

The NBF takes its responsibilities seriously, and as regulations evolve,

it actively advocates for its members, gathering input to inform its industry responses. Love from Devon

Vispring has a new flagship store

Vispring opened a flagship store in Milan during last month’s Design Week. The store is on Via Visconti di Modrone, part of the city’s central design district where interiors showrooms dominate retail in the area, and is its first standalone unit in the city.

‘Milan represents the perfect canvas for our bespoke sleeping solutions,’ said Martin Gill, Vispring md. ‘Strategically located in Milan’s design-forward neighbourhood, the showroom signals Vispring’s commitment to expanding its international presence and connecting with sophisticated global consumers who demand the highest standards of sleep comfort.’

The showroom takes a pared-down approach to decoration, preferring the beds to do the (quiet) talking. It features the best of the current range across two floors, as well as the debut of the Diamond Majesty Topper, with nine layers of natural fibres.

Handmade in Plymouth, Devon since 1970, for the past two years each mattress has achieved the ISO 14001 Environmental Standard following audits by the Société Générale de Surveillance, and the brand now sells to 59 countries. Visit: www.vispring.com

New life

After three decades, the Bed Tailor collection has its latest update

Fourteen new handcrafted mattresses have been created by Harrison Spinks as part of its iconic Bed Tailor collection, which was first launched 30 years ago.

The new models feature a blend of luxurious, natural and responsibly sourced fillings, including the bedmaker’s own Yorkshire-grown hemp and flax, alongside wool from traceable British farms in partnership with British Wool. This makes use of wool’s hypoallergenic, antibacterial, moisture-wicking and temperature-regulating properties, creating a restful and comforting sleep environment.

The premium mattresses include uniquely designed, 100% recyclable, glue-free spring systems, including the brand’s Cortec Quad Revolution spring technology, designed to deliver unrivalled body-contouring support and enhanced comfort.

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of the range, a Limited Edition Pearl mattress has also been designed, which combines 30,000 springs with natural, responsibly sourced fillings, including peace silk and wool from rare breed and indigenous sheep from Cotswold farms.

The new models include seven seasonal turn models, featuring a wool side for maximum warmth during colder months and a cotton side for warmer months. Both materials are known for being moisture-wicking and temperature regulating. There are seven turn-free options that provide targeted support close to the single-sided sleeping surface and deep support at the mattress core, including two pillowtop models filled with natural and sustainable materials for superior comfort. Four ortho options for enhanced lumbar support and a firmer sleep surface complete the collection, two being seasonal turn and the other two turn-free.

All mattresses are 100% foam-free, glue-free and fire-retardant chemical treatment free, and encased in a woolrich ticking fabric which is woven at the company’s Yorkshire factory and is naturally fire-retardant.

Celebration

Hypnos’ 120th year has been commemorated

The 120th year of fifth-generation bed manufacturer Hypnos has been marked by the Duke of Gloucester, who visited the company’s Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire factory to learn more about how the beds and mattresses are made and unveil a commemorative plaque.

The Duke met many of the craftsmen and women using traditional skills passed down through the generations and was escorted by James Keen, Hypnos ceo and fifth-generation family owner to meet the board and senior management team.

The visit proved an excellent opportunity to celebrate some of the special people at the heart of Hypnos. This included Martin Atkins, Hypnos master upholster, who has worked at the manufacturer since 1981 and is now passing his expertise on to a new generation after almost 45 years of special design and upholstery projects. It was as a result of Hypnos’ updating furniture for the Royal Household that the Duke learned of the company.

Others presented to the royal visitor included Alona Vynohrad, who joined the Hypnos sewing team in 2022 via its Ukrainian Scheme; Charlotte Rumsey, recently promoted to customer experience team manager and Ricky Cummings, the company’s longest serving team leader in mattress production, who plays a central role in supporting new starters.

The Duke also saw the new electric lorries and heard about the transition to biodiesel for UK deliveries.

‘It was a privilege for us to welcome the Duke of Gloucester to Hypnos, to meet my father Peter and the wider team,’ says Keen. ‘As a British family-owned business, we continue to be exceptionally proud to ethically and sustainably handcraft

beds and mattresses of the highest quality. Our success and long history are testament to the efforts of our people and it was a great pleasure to share this with His Royal Highness.’

A fresh take

Guardsman’s mattress protector collection has been revamped

As part of its ongoing commitment to quality, sustainability and customer experience, Guardsman has rebranded and updated its mattress protector range.

Along with the classic cotton, Tencel and Luxury ranges which continue to include a 10-year guarantee, the new Cooling range introduces advanced temperature-regulating technology, designed to help consumers enjoy a more restful, comfortable sleep, especially during the warmer months. Alongside these performance enhancements, the range is now presented in fully recyclable, sustainably sourced cardboard packaging, reducing its environmental impact while offering a sleek, modern shelf presence.

‘We’re incredibly proud of the progress we’ve made with this range. Phasing out plastic packaging was a key objective for us going into the end of 2024, so it’s a great achievement to have delivered on that goal. What’s more, all our protectors are now manufactured to the OEKO-TEX standard, which means they’ve been rigorously tested to ensure they’re free from harmful substances and produced using environmentally responsible methods. This globally recognised certification highlights our commitment not just to what our products offer, but how they are made. Simply put, this means safer products, gentler processes, and greater peace of mind for our customers,’

says Paul Jennings, Guardsman head of sales and development.

Expanding its offer is a Stain Remover & Dust Mite Inhibitor spray, formulated for use on mattresses and beds. This powerful, yet gentle solution tackles everyday stains while offering added protection by deterring dust mites, contributing to a cleaner, healthier sleeping environment.

‘While our core focus remains on providing tailored furniture insurance solutions suitable for the UK and European markets, our complementary care product range naturally aligns with our protection ethos. These products not only extend the life of furniture but also enhance the overall value of a protection plan. They give retailers and customers additional tools to maintain their furniture in top condition: reducing wear, extending usability and making insurance claims more straightforward when they are needed.’

Guardsman has also enhanced the digital experience for customers. The newly improved Customer Claims Portal now offers a streamlined journey, with features including an intuitive online help form and improved search functionality, making it easier for consumers to find their policy details and initiate a claim.

‘Betterment is our top priority,’ says John Glaysher, Guardsman continuous improvements manager. ‘My role is

about identifying areas where we can improve and building workable, innovative solutions that ensure the customer is always at the forefront of what we do.’

With several projects underway, Glaysher’s focus is on expanding customer access to services while also enhancing the retailer experience. ‘We’re not just about insurance. Our partnerships with retailers are fundamental, and we’re investing in tools and solutions that make working with us simpler, faster and more rewarding. Retailers and consumers are the heart of our business. Every update, every new product and every service enhancement is driven by feedback and we’re always listening.’

Chiaro di Luna has come of age

Natevo’s Chiaro di Luna bedside table, launched in 2023, has become a true furniture collection which develops the use of metal as a base material and integrates the light function into the design wherever possible.

The new elements – desk, occasional tables, bench and console table with pouf – all share the same curved wire mesh structure, and the glass for the table tops is joined by marble as a more precious and refined option.

We’re looking forward to connecting with visitors as we offer versatile solutions for both residential and commercial spaces.’

Bjelin’s design ethos is distinctly Scandinavian, with every floor crafted with precision, purpose and a bold, timeless aesthetic. WOOD AND LAMINATE

Desire

Wood floors can last for generations if installed properly

Apart from being desirable for its natural appearance, wood flooring can outlast textile and other man-made alternatives, potentially withstanding generations of wear and even improving with age, providing it is installed properly.

Achieving a long-lasting, visually attractive finish with timber flooring demands that the same basic principles of floorcovering installation are followed as when installing other types of floorcoverings. However, wood is more susceptible to damage from moisture than textile or resilient floors. It can also expand and contract significantly because of changes in atmospheric conditions, including temperature and humidity, exerting strain on adhesives and the surface to which the floor is bonded. This demands a few unique considerations when installing this kind of flooring.

The subfloor must be suitably sound, smooth and free of any contaminants, including any old adhesive residues. It is essential that a moisture test is carried out to determine if it is dry enough to receive flooring – something F Ball recommends should be routine procedure as part of any installation. To comply with British Standards, subfloor Relative Humidity (RH) levels should be measured using a calibrated digital hygrometer.

‘If unmanaged, excess subfloor moisture will cause wood to warp and attack adhesives, potentially resulting in the floor cupping or buckling and, ultimately, complete failure,’ says Neil Sanders, F Ball technical director.

A liquid waterproof surface membrane would be required to suppress excess moisture when subfloor RH levels are above 75% in most cases, but this is reduced to 65% where timber flooring will be installed, because of its sensitivity to moisture. After checking subfloor moisture, and deploying a moisture management solution where necessary, installers can apply a smoothing compound to ensure a perfectly smooth base for the wood floor, remembering to prime the subfloor beforehand.

Heavy-duty smoothing compounds are better able to withstand the added strain exerted by the natural movement of the wood

F Ball usually recommends using a heavy-duty smoothing compound, such as its Stopgap 300, prior to the installation of wood flooring, because they are better able to withstand the added strain exerted by the natural movement of the timber.

‘A specialist wood adhesive must be chosen to install wood blocks or planks. Utilising the latest technology, flexible wood floor adhesives provide an elastic but strong bond, which will accommodate natural movement of wood flooring over its lifetime, ensuring a long-lasting, visually attractive floor finish,’ says Sanders.

‘One such flexible wood floor adhesive, Styccobond B95, provides good initial tack whilst also allowing for repositioning of floorcoverings during the initial stage of drying, a particular advantage when installing wood blocks.’

To ensure the correct choice of adhesive for the floorcovering, F Ball recommends checking the compatibility using its industry-leading Recommended Adhesives Guide (RAG), which lists adhesives recommended for use with more than 6,000 floorcoverings produced by over 200 manufacturers. It is available on the F Ball website, downloadable as

a free app, as well as a printed booklet. Alternatively, see the manufacturer’s instructions for advice.

F Ball guarantees that its products will perform for the entire lifetime of a flooring installation, as long as subfloor preparation and installation recommendations are followed.

Make or break

A scalable retail management system is key

Growth is a goal for every forwardthinking furniture retailer, but with growth comes complexity. Expanding operations, opening stores or moving into new markets can put immense pressure on systems not designed to scale up. For retailers in the furniture and bedding sectors, where inventory is highly configurable and customer expectations are increasingly demanding, the right retail management system can make or break that success.

Ordorite is a fully integrated retail management solution designed specifically for furniture, bedding and related industries. At its core is a flexible, modular system that evolves with a business. From a single location to managing a growing network of stores, Ordorite provides the tools and infrastructure to support seamless expansion.

A key feature is its scalability. From day one, the platform is built to adapt:

allowing retailers to add new users, stores, product categories and extra functionality without disruption. The system’s cloud-based nature ensures every location stays connected in real time, with centralised data across point of sale, inventory management, delivery logistics and warehouse operations. This level of connectivity enables businesses to maintain control and visibility as they grow, avoiding the fragmentation and inefficiencies that can stimie expansion.

The software is also designed to support long-term success through its customisability. Every retailer has unique workflows, and Ordorite’s modular design allows businesses to implement only the features they need, when they need them. As operations become more complex, new tools can be effortlessly integrated, from advanced reporting through Vision IQ to mobile

warehouse management and customer marketing automation.

Crucially, Ordorite empowers decision-makers with data. Through built-in analytics and bespoke reporting capabilities, retailers can monitor performance across multiple sites, spot trends early and make informed decisions about where and how to grow. Whether tracking stock movement across locations or measuring individual store profitability, retailers gain the insight they need to scale strategically.

‘For retailers already experiencing growth or planning their next phase, a scalable system isn’t a luxury: it’s a necessity. Ordorite offers more than just software; it offers a partnership built around adaptability, reliability and expert understanding of the furniture retail industry. As the market continues to evolve, furniture retailers are wise to equip themselves with technology that keeps pace. With Ordorite, retailers gain the confidence and control to grow without limits, knowing their systems will support them every step of the way,’ says Stephen Connolly, Ordorite ceo. Fibreline’s commitment to training has been recognised

Fibreline’s commitment to workforce development was formally recognised with the BFA Future In Furniture Excellence in Education Award at the Furniture Component Expo: an accolade that highlights the company’s innovative approach to training and the tangible impact it continues to make across the business, particularly in high-output areas such as the sewing department.

The department has 45 highly skilled machinists producing up to 15,000

cushions a week. ‘This level of production requires more than experience: it calls for a culture of continuous improvement. In response, we launched the Twin Needle Upskilling Programme, designed to facilitate cellular manufacturing as part of a lean productivity project. It introduced new sewing techniques, and supports long-term career progression through the addition of new sewing skills,’ says Richard Prudhoe, Fibreline md.

The award reflects the breadth and

depth of Fibreline’s training initiatives, including robust internal apprenticeship schemes, strong employee engagement strategies and the integration of AI-powered training modules. Each element contributes to building a confident, capable and committed workforce, vital to the company’s sustained success.

Fibreline continues to invest in its people through initiatives such as the Future Leaders programme and the expansion of Cushion College. These exemplify how strategic development pathways can deliver measurable performance improvements while nurturing future talent. ‘Our machinists are among the most skilled professionals in the industry. Programmes like the Twin Needle training ensure we continue to support their growth and match their craftsmanship with worldclass development opportunities,’ says Prudhoe.

‘As production demands continue to rise, Fibreline remains steadfast in its commitment to preparing, supporting, and empowering our teams: proving that investing in people is the most powerful driver of operational excellence.’

Flanders Flooring Days ,

Summer delight

The fourth FFD has more participants and key seminars

The fourth Flanders Flooring Days will see more than 100 international brands showcase their latest products and innovations, including exhibitors making their FFD debut. The event centres on The Hub at Kortrijk Xpo and 18 showrooms near the city. Thanks to the breadth of the exhibitors, all flooring sectors will be covered. Shuttle buses are available between Kortrijk Xpo and the showrooms.

As well as products, there are 15 seminars, including keynote presentations by Judith Van Vliet and Christine Boland.

Beauflor’s Create concept has become a benchmark in flexible custom design for vinyl flooring, and for this year’s FFD the Belgian manufacturer is relaunching the programme with more focus on co-creation.

Create utilises Beauflor’s advanced digital print technology to allow almost

any image to be printed onto its vinyl flooring. The flexibility of digital printing also means that custom designs can be produced quickly and at low order volumes.

The company will also show how it competes on value and volume in its residential and commercial products through two revamped entry-level collections and a mid-level range aimed at independent retailers and wholesalers.

‘We’d love to welcome the UK flooring industry to our showroom throughout Flanders Flooring Days. For everyone, it’s a great opportunity to get up to speed with our product developments as well as experience how our Create programme is changing the way people think about vinyl flooring,’ says Chris Roberts, Beauflor regional sales director.

Featuring in The Hub at Kortrijk Xpo, Louis De Poortere will be presenting

the latest designs in its 2025 Ecorugs Collection. Launched in 2023 as the brand’s drive to a circular production model, Ecorugs now uses 40% recycled content and is fully recyclable through the Take Care Programme.

The Antiquarian line has new designs in Suzani, Tabriz, Kasak and Antalia, while Mad Men has been expanded with Sol and Virgin Land. Louis De Poortere has also expanded Structures with Berber, and Craft with Ribbon.

Visitors will also be able to learn about the new Ecorugs outdoor qualities, bringing a layer of comfort to outdoor spaces. Visitors can also gain a behind the scenes look at its Mouscron factory.

Moduleo will highlight improvements to performance and fresh on-trend designs with the launch of the updated Moduleo LayRed, including the first opportunity to see the changes

in Moduleo’s testing room at its Avelgem showroom and factory.

Visitors will also be able to learn more about the latest POS tools and content and Moduleo’s sustainability journey, including how it makes LayRed with 22% pre-consumer recycled content, and its drive to product circularity through the ReCover programme – which in Belgium and the Netherlands, where recycling pathways make it viable, recovers installation waste and old floors to be turned into new floors.

Quick-Step will use FFD as a chance to entice visitors to its Wielsbeke headquarters in the story behind its latest flooring. Walking through the Quick-Step experience will also be

an opportunity for visitors to gather knowledge on two major forthcoming product developments: the new Impressive laminate collection, and Lumic, the result of a 10-year development journey to create the ‘perfect floor’ using today’s best technologies and inspiration from the aerospace industry.

Impressive is being extensively refreshed through the addition of two new wood surface structures inspired by minimalism and thoughtful maximalism. These new structures reflect the essence of these trends: refined, subtle elegance that echoes a minimalist approach to decor, and a rougher and expressive texture that’s bold and courageous. Both are available in colours that complement

the trends that inspire them and are joined by a selection of the collection’s retained bestselling decors. The first waterproof and squeak-free herringbone will also be introduced into Impressive.

Lumic is described as a game-changing product, not just for Quick-Step but for the flooring industry.

‘This year’s Flanders Flooring Days will be unlike any before for us. We take a deep-dive into the inspiring stories that have defined the Quick-Step brand and the bold innovations driving its future. Prepare for an experience-packed visit that promises to be unforgettable,’ says Pieter Wilmots, Unilin modular flooring Europe vice-president.

Serene comfort

interzum will see Carpenter highlight its latest products including Serene and Podz

‘We are looking forward to showcasing our innovative and extensive product portfolio to both current customers and new contacts. New developments in our portfolio are Serene Foam with Supportive Air Technology, mass balance foams which have a sustainable content, and graphite-infused grades, available both in high resilience and memory foam. We have developed an innovative Podz Pocket which complements our Podz Foam Spring range. This has become a market leader since launching last year. These innovations can be sold across a range of markets, including furniture, bedding and leisure,’ says Gillian Finch, Carpenter national sales manager.

Serene Foam is designed to offer the optimum in comfort and support. It is enhanced with billions of microscopic

air capsules to cradle the body, increase the level of support and aid in reducing pressure on sensitive areas. ‘It gives an immediate comfort response at virtually any temperature, making Serene Foam the perfect comfort layer for mattresses, toppers, pillows and cushions,’ says Finch.

‘The new Podz Pocket design and the Podz Mini are available in our full range of foam grades, offering enhanced support and performance when used as a base or comfort layer in a mattress, as a unique layer in a topper or as a wrap or as a core in a pillow. The options are countless and both designs are easily recyclable at the end of the product life.

‘They are ergonomically designed to give a luxury feel, deliver excellent durability, respond to body movement and minimise motion transfer. The

Podz Mini offers the benefits of springlike suppor t, while the Podz Pocket gives instant comfort and has the advantage of a firm, edge-to-edge support on the sides of the mattress.

‘Our graphite-infused foam has been developed to help control the sleep environment. Both Aurora+, a highresilience foam and Celsius+ visco-elastic graphite foam offer an improved transfer of heat in thermal conductivity testing when compared against a standard polyether or memory foam, which can lead to a cooler environment. Aurora+ gives superior support and durability and has open-cell technology for increased airflow. Celsius+ will contour to the body for personalised comfort and help ease pressure on sensitive areas. Both foams are melamine-free.’

Carpenter will also be showing its Rebond foam and carpet underlay, both produced from recycled trim foam used in the manufacture of its product, and from trim taken back from its customers.

‘We continue to develop and create new products as our success is based on technical innovation, exceptional product quality and outstanding customer service. Our research and development teams, based in Richmond, Virginia and Wetteren, Belgium are continually pushing the boundaries while looking for future innovations, with the focus on making comfortable products,’ says Finch. King of the wire

Engineering the future is Spinks’ ambition

From ultra-fine wire to custom-built spring systems, Spinks is engineering its future by redefining the science of comfort. It has spent years developing its own precision-engineered springs, fine wire for microcoils, and bespoke machinery to deliver new levels of support, breathability and customisation.

As the pioneer of microcoils, Spinks has long been committed to pushing boundaries. Its dedicated wire-drawing facility enables springs to be tailored to exact specifications, while in-house engineers in Leeds develop the machines that bring those springs to life. The fully integrated process delivers products that have enhanced breathability and adaptive support to multiple industries including bedding, seating and automotive: all without compromising responsible manufacturing.

Spinks has developed a unique grade of steel and draws its own fine wire to an exact specification, enabling a

significant reduction in wire diameter while maintaining the highest levels of comfort. This creates microcoils that offer a spring layer with exceptional flexibility and strength for targeted support and pressure relief, allowing mattress and seating manufacturers to reduce their reliance on foam.

Every spring is created with purpose, uniquely engineered and customised for comfort. As the first company to innovate using the drum coiling method in the furniture and bedding industry globally, Spinks is able to create all of its wire gauges with no twist. This allows the wire to unwind from the drum or carrier statically and produces arrowstraight wire that improves the quality and consistency of the coils created. This method has now been copied by many other wire producers around the world.

Spinks recently reached a significant milestone with its 100th patent. It plans to launch a number of patent-pending

innovations designed to set new standards in coil technology and benefit the furniture and seating industries.

‘Our passion for endless innovation drives everything we do. We constantly strive to create new, innovative products that our customers will truly benefit from, which is why we believe we are Wired for Comfort. From developing our own fine wire and spring technologies, to engineering the machines that make them, we’re always exploring new ways to enhance comfort and performance while minimising our effect on the environment. Whether it’s improving sleep quality, supporting posture or reducing environmental impact, our mission is to keep pushing boundaries,’ says Darren Marcangelo, Spinks cco.

Recognised with three current King’s Awards for Innovation, Sustainable Development and International Trade, Spinks’ commitment to quality and progress is demonstrated by its international success. This is shown on the company’s new website. Featuring a dynamic brand video, fresh visual identity, and the full story behind its Wired for Comfort branding, the website offers a more intuitive and engaging experience.

Spinks is showcasing its products at interzum 2025 in Cologne from 20-23 May in Hall 10.1, where visitors can experience its latest spring technology through a curated selection of seating and mattresses. Even the chairs on the stand will showcase its signature springs, allowing guests to feel comfort from the moment they sit down.
