MATERIAL STORY 9 RATTAN ‘Rattan’s lightweight, durable, pliable and sustainable qualities make it one of our favourite materials to use in the design studio, allowing us to create more unusual 3D forms and design pieces with an obvious hand-crafted and natural aesthetic. This season’s treatment of interwoven black and natural stripes shows rattan being used in a more modern, graphic way,’ says Butler. PATTERN STORY

10 RIAD, designed by Martha Coates ‘Our main pattern story for SS 2020 started with the idea of bringing bright sunshine vibes into interiors. For this we developed colour and pattern reminiscent of warmer climates – golden yellow sun, coral sunsets, earthy tan pigments, palm green and azure blue sea and sky. We’ve also taken traditional kilim patterns and made these contemporary through use of colour and scale of pattern. Used across both our indoor and outdoor designs, this gives a continuity across both collections, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor,’ says Coates. Ade tufted rug (120cm x 180cm) £95 (rolled up); Mohan flatweave rug (160cm x 230cm) £170 (rolled up); Rosa embroidered grey circle cushion £25; Nik rattan easy-fit shade £95; Sura handwoven rattan chaise £395; Rosa embroidered circle cushion (40cm x 40cm) £25; zig-zag cushions (45cm x 45cm) £25 each; Malibu rug (160cm x 230cm) £350; Fisola flatweave black and white rug (120cm x 180cm) £50

11 ZIG-ZAG ‘We use zig-zags and triangles a lot in our pattern design at Habitat as the sharpness of the shape feels relevant and modern. They can be kept very simple or made into quite complicated pattern that evolves the longer you look at it. I like taking references from tribal sources and re-interpreting these in contemporary ways – using an unusual colour palette or a different artistic method to give a more abstract edge. For our ceramics and textiles this season we’ve been experimenting with a mixture of very sharp, perfect zig-zag shapes combined with looser hand-created versions which we’ve then translated through painting and block printing, creating some really interesting results.’ Tate flatweave rug (140cm x 200cm) £70; Fisola cushion (45cm x 45cm) £25 (inset)

12 SYMBOLS ‘A continuation of the figurative and abstract patterns that ran through our SS 19 and AW 19 collections: moving away from references to the human body, this season is a mixture of cut-out shapes used as symbols and references to objects and plants. A soft palette of mustard, celadon blue, ink blue and forest green gives a minimalist feel.’
