A Special Message from

Interfaith Leadership We are reminded daily at Interfaith Community Services that Resilience – the capacity to navigate difficult challenges and improve along the way – resides within our clients, employees, and volunteer communities. We are proud of our organizational capacity to survive the pandemic and related critical challenges, and to grow and strengthen our critical safety net services to meet the needs of communities in crisis.

With our broad continuum of programs and services, the resources we provide stabilize and rebuild the lives of our most vulnerable neighbors most disproportionately impacted by the economic devastation of COVID-19.

Interfaith employees and volunteers continue to be heroic, on the frontlines, and essential in meeting our clients’ needs and providing supportive services, shelter, counseling, employment support, housing and access to healthcare.

You are a critical part of this partnership. We do more together than any of us can do apart. Through your support Interfaith continuously evolves to meet the needs of our community, yet our motto stays the same. We are Interfaith Community Services and we are Helping People Help Themselves.

Our Commitment to Anti-Racism Our pledge to combat systemic racism and all forms of oppression and marginalization is central to our mission. As a leader and community partner, we will work diligently to bring to fruition our vision of a society in which all people can lead healthy, selfsufficient lives.

For over 40 years, Interfaith Community Services has provided services and advocated for vulnerable and underserved members of San Diego County regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or sexual orientation.

Following the murder of George Floyd, Interfaith pledged to actively address the inexorable link between racism, poverty, homelessness, and trauma. An employee-led Racial Justice Working Group was, then, created to facilitate our on-going commitment to Anti-Racism and identify actions leading to systematic change. We also launched a multi-city faith leaders’ coalition, which guided the development of training curricula designed to assist faith communities in understanding and responding to racism.

In 2021, Interfaith partnered with Success Beyond Measure, Inc., a diversity consulting firm, and committed to a lengthy process of self-assessment, education, and empowerment that included executive coaching, advising, organization-wide training, policy review, and organizational development. All staff teams participated in Anti-Racism Training focused on its history, definition, scope, associated language, and application. Participants also shared their personal experiences with racism and discrimination, which fostered a deeper understanding of our organizational Anti-Racism

commitments. Additionally, all staff were invited to participate in structured listening sessions. While maintaining participant anonymity, information from these sessions informed guidelines for Interfaith’s Anti-Racism Roadmap, centering equity, transparency, accountability, and sustainability in our daily operations, policies, procedures, and service delivery.

Making a Lasting Impact The Abraham & Lillian Turk Recuperative Care Center is Already Changing Lives In October 2020, Interfaith purchased a 77-room motel with plans to create a transformational place of healing and restoration. With support from our generous private donors, including lead donor Jerry Turk, and the County of San Diego, Interfaith is bringing this one-of-a-kind center to fruition to help our neighbors exiting hospitals without a home.

Interfaith is Opening a Family Shelter Interfaith is so excited to announce the launch of a family shelter, coming January 2022. With the expansion and relocation of Interfaith’s Recuperative Care Program to the new Turk Center, Interfaith is repurposing our Hawthorne Veteran and Family Resource Center to address one of our biggest needs: families experiencing homelessness. Permitting processes are underway for renovations needed to accommodate families, including outdoor play spaces! We look forward to helping families rebuild their lives at our new family shelter beginning early 2022.

Our Community Partnerships Support Our Resilience Interfaith Community Services collaborates with onsite medical center and partner, Neighborhood Healthcare, to provide showers, haircuts, COVID vaccines, laundry, shelter assistance, shoes, foot and blood pressure exams, and more to those most in need.

Since March, in partnership with the County of San Diego Health & Human Services Agency, we have been an authorized COVID vaccine distribution site for those we serve, with a priority for all persons experiencing or at-risk of homelessness.

Resilience in Action “Despite one or more traumatic lived experiences, high barriers and limited resources, Interfaith client surveys demonstrate high levels of strength and resiliency as clients identified areas of growth and strength within themselves.”

In January 2021, Linda’s landlord asked her family to move from their property since they needed the home for themselves. With nowhere to turn, Linda, her partner, and two kids, stayed in a hotel while searching for housing. When they finally secured an apartment, they had little savings and fell behind on rent.

That’s when Linda came to Interfaith for help. Interfaith provided her family with

rental assistance to keep them in their new home. We also helped Linda pay for her GED exams and Security Guard training. She took initiative and attended Interfaith’s financial education courses, is current on her rent, and successfully graduated with her GED. Linda is applying to college this year and is now working towards her dream of becoming a parole officer.

Yobana, a 15-year-old high school sophomore, joined Interfaith’s Transitional Youth Academy (TYA) after being referred to the program for academic support. With help from her case manager, Yobana enrolled in summer school and earned an A! The TYA program provided her with a monthly bus pass to get to school and to her internship with Oceanside Chamber of Commerce. Yobana is determined and currently has a 3.6 GPA, succeeding in the new school year.

Volunteers are a cornerstone at Interfaith Community Services. They enable us to expand services and provide hope to people in our community who have found the courage to ask for help. When the pandemic began, the unforeseen absence of volunteer commitment, familiar faces, and helping hands was evident.

Thankfully, the crisis did not deter altruism with the outpouring of helpers willing and able to ensure our neighbors have food and access to essential programs to stay safe, healthy, and strong.

These changemakers worked alongside our reduced staff, creating an environment of collaboration and innovation.

Our volunteers demonstrate a resounding force, confronting unimaginable challenges. They prepared and served 220,642 meals, packed over 13,000 emergency food boxes, and kept the lights from dimming during the holiday season. Now, with many recurring volunteers returning, resiliency is tangible at Interfaith. It is apparent in the eyes of people rebounding from a continuing crisis and through the actions of those able to rise up amidst the uncertainty to provide support.

Mental health is on our mind. We are launching a unique initiative designed to change the conversation about mental health – one mind and one life at a time. Interfaith will host virtual conversations, inspiring microevents, social media engagements, and an inaugural “Change Your Mind” festival on February 26, 2022* at the ViaSat main campus in Carlsbad.

This event is designed to be a transformative experience, where people can begin to look past the prior stigmas and labels often associated with mental health. Interfaith will offer a free day of wellness activities for our guests, workshops, panels and breakout sessions. Topics will include, but not be limited to, Destigmatizing Mental Health, Wellness and Spirituality, Depression in Youth and Teens, Mindfulness for Veterans and Healing through the Arts. We will also have traditional and modern wellness experiences and activities including; live music, drumming circles, meditation, Qigong, art therapy, sound baths, yoga for kids, and a live mural experience with local artists.
