welcome

to PWR »

it’s finally that time of the year! The time when the leaders from Interact 5170 come together to bond, laugh, share service ideas, and discover the type of leader they want to be. Welcome to Interact 5170’s 2013 Presidents’ Winter Retreat. This weekend will present countless opportunities for you, as an Interactor, to grow as a leader. We would like to personally thank each of you for attending Presidents’ Winter Retreat this year. This retreat was specifically created for leaders like yourself to learn leadership techniques, gain more experience, and create new bonds with other Interactors. Our theme for this year is “All for One and One for all.” As the biggest and best Interact district in the world, we all have experienced the power of teamwork. All thirteen different areas are separated by distance, yet together, we are able to make drastic changes not only in our community, but on a global scale. As leaders in your Interact clubs, you are responsible for creating an environment based upon teamwork. An African proverb states that “if you want to go fast, go alone, if you want to go far, go together”. District 5710 is going far. This year we are lending our hand to Bangladesh to provide a new source of education for the children living in impoverished conditions. We’ve already raised $39,000! Each year, our district becomes better because as a community we have grown on the foundation built by leaders who have come before us. Today you are making history as you bond with others and continue to spread awareness of our Interact mission and share the unique love found within our Interact family. We’ve all come a long way to proceed on a path that will lead us to multiple opportunities for ourselves and to make an impact in the world. We would like to encourage all of you to take this retreat as an opportunity to grow as leaders and as Interactors. We hope to see you taking initiative in your teambuilding groups and teaching each other the different techniques you use in your clubs or communities as leaders. Thank you all again for being such an essential piece of our Interact puzzle.

guest speaker

Jon Talbert Jon is a speaker, motivator, comedian who has established a national reputation as a “Humanitarian Entrepreneur.” Jon started a compassion organization called Beautiful Day that spread virally across the country serving thousands in random acts of kindness. Each year he uncovers amazing stories of how regular people step into life-changing “acts of heroism” all because they decided to serve someone else on the planet. Jon also serves on the board of a global organization that has him working directly with AIDS orphans and human trafficking in Africa. Jon brings a powerful message to University and High School students, parents, educators, and non-profits organizations looking to inspire their people to live a “heroic” life. Jon also speaks to professional Soccer and NFL teams, as well as conferences and corporations around the country.

“Jon’s talk had an immediate impact on our campus”

“Jon’s approachable style and humor... helps students respond positively to the message he conveyed”

“Funny...innovative... inspiring”

With a unique background in both compassion and comedy, Jon discovered that there was a new story that needs to be told. “When he speaks it’s as if the auditorium has turned into a comedy club, and laughter wins the heart of the audience and validates their reason to hear a message that can change their lives and quite possibly the world.” “Jon Talbert’s message is hysterically funny, inspiring, and actually motivates you to do something Heroic with your life.” Jon not only reconnects his audience with the DNA of compassion, but helps them to develop their own personal “genius” playlist to serve humanity like no one else can. Heroic Genius is not just about “dishin’ out the lovin’… it’s about changing your world. 9

Puzzle pieces are laid across a table as they’re slowly put together, each piece individually unique but destined to connect with others to create a beautiful image. Together, every piece plays a specific role in the configuration of the puzzle, whether it be a corner piece or a center piece. All the pieces create one picture, and one picture consists of all the pieces. “All for One and One for All.” I have noticed that over the course of my involvement, the cohesiveness of Interactors exemplifies the ideal of “All for One and One for All.” United under one goal, we were able to raise thousands of dollars for our international project. That’s amazing! And you’re a part of this effort, this Interact movement. This weekend, I hope everyone will gain memories to last forever and remember that every Interactor counts. You, as a future or current leader of Interact, will contribute a positive influence to the future. You already are by being here at PWR with other potential leaders and volunteering your time to prepare for your success together. With your involvement and efforts combined with others, you already have the PWR to inspire others and continue writing Interact’s history. As an individual you will grow but through teamwork everyone will achieve more. Whenever I play basketball or run track, I realize how crucial teamwork is to strengthening the team as a whole. Whenever support is received, support is also given. After all, we’re “All for One and One for All.”

WELCOME INTERACTORS TO PWR 2013! I am so proud to call myself the Lieutenant Governor of the biggest and best Interact district in the world, District 5170. I joined Interact my sophomore year and I have loved every minute of it. I’m currently a senior at Ann Sobrato High School in Morgan Hill. I am beyond excited to have you all here for the BEST WEEKEND OF YOUR LIVES. You are all here because you are a potential or current leader in your Interact club. I hope you take advantage of the opportunity in front of you this weekend. As one family and as leaders, we can become the hope for the future. This retreat is about becoming one team in our efforts to create a stable education for everyone, “All for One and One for All.” As a team, our district has served not only our community, but our world. Through Interact, you have the opportunity to interact with people of all backgrounds. I encourage you all to keep an open mind and open heart not only this weekend, but always. I would like to personally thank all of you for inspiring me the past few years with your dedication and commitment to serving others. LET’S HAVE AN AMAZING WEEKEND. 18

jeffrey chan;

secretary »

Hello there! I’m Jeffrey, the DC secretary reppin’ Area 6! Here’s a little information about me: I’m a senior at Independence HS (this year’s location for FLC!). I love trying new things (Yolo!) and meeting new friends (add me on FB!). Things I love include yo-yoing (check it out on YouTube!), sports of all kind, and making a difference in people’s lives (that’s why I’m here!). Feel free to talk to me at any time whether to ask a question (about DC, life’s mysteries, preparing for college, or what have you) or just talk about something you have in mind. My Interact story got started when I was a freshman, where I found a passion in helping others. There’s definitely something special about being able to see the smiles of the people you are able to make an impact on. As I got more and more involved in the club, taking initiative and trying new positions, I came to realize that we are part of one big family. Each and every one of us is tied to other Interactors and we work together to make a difference. Think of it like this: we all have a piece of a jigsaw puzzle. Separately, these puzzles are meaningless, but put us together and we create a beautiful picture, the solution to the world’s problems. As you go along your own Interact journey, keep this concept in mind because together we can travel farther than any one of us could ever go alone.

jamie lam;

international coordinator »

It’s groovy to meet ya, Interactor! My name is Jamie Lam, and I’m your CoInternational Coordinator for 2012-2013. I believe in seizing the day (everyday), going after your dreams (no matter how outlandish and impossible they may seem), being involved with your nation and politics (international issues, too!), being a California prepster (dressed to impress and for success), and using the Oxford comma (religiously). The reason I’m who I am today is because of the places I’ve been, the people I’ve met, and the experiences that sprouted from that. FLC 2010 changed my life — it was the day I realized that a go-getter spirit in life could make anything possible. There are so many different problems in the world, but having the opportunity to personally tackle what you don’t like to make the world a better place for our generation — and those after us — changes your perspective on how much one person’s impact could really revolutionize the world. Where we stand today is due to our dream working. Teamwork is the integral part of being in Interact. We are everything we are (successful, passionate, and ambitious) because of who we are as a whole. When we, the youth, come together and set out to change the world, we are unstoppable. All the successes, all the failures, all the hardships, all the achievements — we face them “All for One and One for All.”

ben shea;

international coordinator »

Hello and welcome to PWR 2013! For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Ben Shea. I love running, playing tennis, playing the piano, hanging out with friends, and occasionally working out at the gym. I started my Interact career as a freshman, being one of the few underclassmen in the club. Sophomore year I became an officer, and that year, I went to PWR, where I truly learned what it means to be a leader and Interactor. I got the honor of being one of the district’s co-events coordinators my junior year. As a senior, looking back on my journey, I never would’ve known I would be here today when I started on this roller coaster ride of an Interact adventure. So why “All for One and One for all?” As you may know, we have and will be working with other people, whether it’s on a sports team, in a class, for a job, or in Interact. Although there will be those people who don’t do the work or those we dislike, we have to be flexible and understanding in any given situation. I know I’ve been that person who didn’t put in the time and effort, making the other members do the work that I failed to finish, but I’ve definitely learned my mistakes and try to improve. If you disagree with someone, speak up; don’t be afraid to give helpful criticism to you group. Be your word; it only causes stress and disorganization when you don’t do what you promise to do. But most importantly, have fun! Don’t go into things with a sore attitude; make the most of it and enjoy what you do!

Hi Love. Welcome, welcome, to the happiest place on earth :) So I like to keep it short & simple. This weekend, I will be your Co-MC/hostess! I am a swimmer, water polo player, movie fanatic, food junkie, and the list goes on. I really like going to festivals and concerts because there’s nothing better than live music and a room full of happy people, you know? Anyways, I’ve been in Interact since my freshmen year and attended PWR during sophomore year. Let me tell you, most of the kids I’ve been on DC with, I’ve met at PWR. So look around you, because these are the future leaders of Interact. Honestly, PWR is such a great opportunity because it’s like you’ve been chosen to take a step up in Interact as a leader. Of course, you’re not guaranteed anything, but you get this big chance to better yourself. You get the chance, but the rest is on you! I hope you enjoy your weekend :) Love, Emily

chris meszaros; community coordinator »

Hey guys! My name is Chris Meszaros and I am one of this year’s co-Community Coordinators. Along with District Council, I serve as the co-President at my school’s Interact Club. I joined Interact last year (11th grade) and have been actively involved since! Apart from my Interact service, I enjoy hanging out with friends and family, going on spontaneous adventures, eating, playing different sports, and meeting new people! An interesting fact about me: I speak fluent Hungarian, as well as read and write! Going back to this year’s PWR theme, “All for One and One for All,” it is important to remember that as Interactors, we are collaborating to make a positive change in not only our local communities, but the international community as well! We are the change we want to see in the world! In order to do that, we must all put in effort that benefits the team as a whole! Hope to get to know all of you better!

Hello, Interactors of District 5170, and WELCOME to PWR 2013! My name is David Kang, and I am so proud to be serving as your district co-Events Coordinator for the 2012-13 year. A bit about me...I’m a junior at Irvington High School, a lover of music, an appreciator of good food, a die-hard Instagram user, an intended business major, a dreamer, a realist, and a teenager with goals and aspirations bigger than myself. Merely a year ago, I awkwardly walked into Camp Campbell with my fresh, new PWR 2012 tee on, a positive mindset, and a racing heart. I looked around the crowded room, took a deep breath, and continued forth, oblivious to the fact that PWR would be one of the best weekends of my entire sophomore year. The people I sang with, ate with, danced with, laughed with, shared with, and interacted with that weekend truly inspired me to leave Camp Campbell feeling refreshed and re-energized to revive my club. When I came back, I realized how much support I had from the people around me (I love you A5 kids). “All for One and One for All.” Look around you. You are among the leaders of the largest and most successful Interact district in the entire world. You are among the most dedicated, inspirational, and moving people of our younger generation, all striving to restore each other’s faith in humanity. Because in the end, it’s not about you. It’s not about me. It’s about us. It’s about us and what we can contribute to the world. Interactors, keep doin’ what you’re doing, but remember to do what you love and love what you do, and I will always support you.

HELLOOO YOU BEAUTIFUL INTERACTORS!! Let me start off by saying that this weekend will undoubtedly be one of the greatest experiences of this year (if not your life!) — but that’s only if YOU choose to let it be! Look around you! Everyone here was chosen for a reason, and we’re here for one purpose: to ensure that you — yes, YOU — have an amazing, super fun time and leave with a tremendous amount of inspiration, confidence, and leadership skills to overcome any future obstacles. Our theme this year is “All for One and One for All.” As high schoolers, our pwr ( ;) ) can sometimes be underestimated…. but HAVE YOU SEEN WHAT WE’VE ACCOMPLISHED TOGETHER?! It’s absolutely breathtaking to see how far Interact has come since I first learned about it freshman year, and that progress has stemmed from the passion and improvement of each and every single one of you. My number one rule in life is to always have many adventures and stay happy. As you work together with all the new people you meet this weekend, remember that everyone has a different approach to life, and how we combine those motivations is what will make us successful. Don’t leave this retreat without smiling, making a ton of new homies, growing as a leader, and saying hi to me! I’m the 4’11” one with a yellow book cover on her head (DESPICABLE ME MINIONS LEMME HOLLA) that randomly spazzes out into song and dance. Be open and don’t ever hesitate to hit any of us up ^_^ Let’s learn about each other in person, yeah? Brownie points if you introduce yourself with a lame joke!

alex ku;

HELLOOOO INTERACTORS!! Welcome to PWR. I hope you all have an AMAZING TIME meeting new people, laughing your hearts out, and learning more about teamwork. Relax and enjoy yourselves because PWR will probably be a once in a life time opportunity for many of us! So you know how stronger together and one family are two of our district themes this year?! Well, I really want to emphasize these themes because these two virtues have shaped my world and who I am. As a leader, I’ve learned the importance of being inclusive and working together. If I didn’t have my enthusiastic officers by my side, the Interact club at my school would have died and I definitely wouldn’t be where I am today! So keep in mind that if you want to go quickly, go alone. But if you want to go far, go TOGETHER. Hm..with that being said, I guess I’ll tell you a little bit about myself! Rockin’ the shades at 5 foot 1 (YES, I finally grew another INCH), I’m an ambitious, passionate, and energetic little girl. I love what I do and whenever I set my mind to something, there’s NOTHING that can stop me from achieving that goal. In my free time, I like to eat Korean food, sleep, read biographies, and go shopping. And in the future, I plan on traveling the world to make a difference and try new things. Stay classy, Interactors. <3 The Kuminator.

My name is Sam and I enjoy long walks on the beach…actually, I don’t. I know, I’m a weirdo, a fact that I attribute to my strange upbringing. Everything about me is weird. For starters, I was raised in Morgan Hill, a city that idolizes mushrooms. If that’s not strange enough, I didn’t even know what milk tea was until high school. Ironically, milk tea immediately became my “thang” throughout high school. If I was drinking, I was drinking milk tea. But you don’t want to know about what I consume. You want to know me on a more personal level! I’m currently seventeen (birthday on May 8th), and have attended the same school since 1st grade. My high school has a grand total of 86 students! I often get lost in the vast sea of strangers that attend my school. Oh, did I mention I also have a strange sense of humor? Sometimes I feel like I’m one of the few people on the face of the earth who appreciates puns. A favorite of mine is, Q: “What do you call a girl turtle?” A: “Michelle.” That’s so terrible. Moving right along, I joined Interact my freshman year and haven’t looked back since. I will always have a special place in my heart for the goals and people of Interact. Throughout my many endeavors, I’ve realized that success and happiness are easily achieved by surrounding yourself with the right people. I’m very fortunate and will be forever grateful to have found these people through Interact. I know, so cheesy. Other passions of mine include meeting new people, singing, and pretending I know how to play instruments. If you’re still reading, you are a beautiful soul. Anyways, I really hope you have a great time this weekend and make many friends! PWR on!

Greetings! I’m Duc Nguyen, your Area 1 Kooky Koala Director! As we begin the second half of the year, I would just like to say that I am so inspired by everyone’s work thus far. Being a part of District Council has definitely been an extremely rewarding experience, seeing all the great work that Interactors are doing from all over 5170. I look forward to meeting all of you over the course of this weekend. Hopefully this Presidents’ Winter Retreat is as great as it was for me my sophomore year. Outside of Interact, I love running. I am the captain of both the varsity track team and cross country team. Definitely talk to me about running if you do too! I also enjoy snowboarding and playing guitar — nothing serious, just for fun. My favorite shows are Suits, White Collar, and Psych. USA network is my favorite channel. My goal for the end of the year is to capitalize on the network that Area 1 has built. Together, we Kooky Koalas will do what we’ve never done before! Make sure to check the events page about our upcoming Mario Kart 64 tournament benefiting Life, Love, Literacy. I look forward to meeting you all!

Hey guys! My name is Milton. I’ve been Interact for all awesome 4 years of high school. In those four years I’ve learned amazing people skills, how to help the community, and how to be a leader. I hope you all master these skills during your time in high school! Besides Interact I play badminton, snowboard, fish, and I am learning to glove as a side hobby. I like to spend majority of my money on food. People say I am easy to talk to! I am sure we will have something in common! I am pretty much fearless in trying new things. EDM and some hip-hop is the majority of the music I listen to! The radio in my car is broken so I don’t what the main stream hits are :c I am a pretty big fan of Taylor Swift and One Direction though! This year’s theme is: “All for One and One for All”. Everyone here, and I am sure everyone in your Interact club, wants to do amazing things for the community. Working as a team and concentrating your efforts completely into your goals can accomplish that. In Monster’s Inc., Mike may be a klutz at times, but he is Sully’s best friend. They work hard together to get Boo back home. There will be times when you will be discouraged but there should never be a time to give up, just like there was never a right time to just hand Boo over to the evil Randall! Working together as a team lessens the burden of the task and allows you to complete better quality work. After finishing, the good feelings of accomplishment can be shared as a team, and more importantly, as friends!

HEY INTERACTORS! My name is a combination of my parents’ names: Joe and Sophie. I also have two younger brothers named Waylon and Dylon. They are so annoying, but I love them. I have never had a pet unless you count winning a goldfish at a carnival and finding the fishbowl empty the next day. My ideal pet would be Hello Kitty. I have a slight obsession with her and board games. I will play Settlers of Catan any day, at any time. All these obsessions are just temporary and the thing that counts most in the pursuit of happiness is choosing the right companion. The theme “All for One and One for All” is super cheesy, but its meaning transcends to all generations! The people around me are my biggest support system. No matter what I am dealing with, they are there to help. From my family and friends to Rotarians and Interactors, I cannot imagine my life without them. We must remember the people who brought us up to this point in life and truly show our appreciation for what they have done for us.

Hello, Interactors! My name is Clarisse and I am currently a senior. I’m quite the busy bee and other than being involved in Interact, I enjoy participating in Girl Scouts, ASB, theatre, and teaching confirmation. In my free time, I like to spend time with my friends or sew various items on my sewing machine. Our PWR theme “All for One and One for All” is important to Interact because it represents how when Interactors join together, amazing things can be accomplished. From volunteering in the community to fundraising for our international project, teamwork can always bring about great results. My partner and I chose The Incredibles to fit our group theme because they have many similarities to Interactors. The Incredibles are one family, just like D5170, and they both breed hope within themselves and their communities. Although they each have their own powers and talents like Interactors, they are all much stronger when they work together. The African proverb “If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together,” explains the theme of “All for One and One for All,” well because through Interact, leadership, and life, accomplishments are more easily reached and worthwhile when done with others striving to achieve the same goals. Ultimately, teamwork makes the dream work!

Hello, Interactors! My name is Chris Vasques and my character for PWR is…me, King Cuhrizzma! I chose to be King Cuhrizzma because I definitely think a charismatic leader is someone who people tend to respect and follow. Our PWR theme is “All for One and One for All,” and I think a kingdom represents this perfectly. Although the king and queen are important titles to hold, they would be nothing without the support of their loyal subjects (knights, shopkeepers, and peasants alike). By working with the people around you instead of against them, your group becomes an empowered united front. The willingness to work together is an attribute that is essential in leadership, in Interact, and in life. Although it is important to wish for the success of others around you, never forget yourself. Your own victories and battles build up your character. Construct your character to be indestructible, drive your obstacles to the ground, and be your own person. It sounds cliché, but never let someone tell you how you should act because you are who you are. Nobody is ever going to able to change that against your will. I encourage you to take this opportunity to allow yourself to be open to anything that comes your way — let those walls come down and learn from your peers. Take everything in and let yourself go at PWR. This is one of the most impactful events I’ve ever experienced in my life and I hope it changes you the way it changed me during my sophomore year. Remember what you learn at PWR and always let it motivate you to become better. “Success is not a result of spontaneous combustion. You must set yourself on fire.”

“Any weather is Pinkberry weather!” That’s one of my main mottos in life :3 Why? Because I LOVE Pinkberry! On average, I eat Pinkberry once a week, whether its rainy, windy, or sunny; I guess you could say I have a problem....Other than eating Pinkberry, I enjoy, well, EATING, sleeping, singing, playing volleyball, listening to my husband Adam Levine, more eating, and of course, serving Interact :) My journey in Interact started when I was just a freshman. Back then, I was really shy, unconfident, and wasn’t really passionate about anything other than getting good grades. As I went from being boardmember to co-Historian to co-Publicist to co-President, Interact really brought me out of my shell (haha so punny), and helped me find myself and my passion for helping others and inspiring the future. This may be cliché, but Interact quickly became my second family; among Interactors is where I feel the happiest and the most like myself. This is where this year’s PWR theme, “All for One and One for All,” comes in. Working together is so important when it comes to being a family, a team, or whatever you see Interact as. Strengthening bonds and combining each other’s greatest strengths to contribute to one amazing cause is the secret to Interact’s success in inspiring the uninspired and making a difference in the world. So think about what it means to be in the Interact family. Who would we be without the people who encourage us to be the best people we can be? With that being said, I hope y’all make some lasting friendships here at PWR. Put yourself out there! Step out of your comfort zone! Meet new people! Live life with no regrets :) Peace, Love, Interact <3

What is a healthy, low-fat snack; packed with protein, carbs, and vitamins; filled with Japanese goodness and gifts from the ocean; makes my mouth water; and represents this year’s PWR theme, “All for One and One for All”? SUSHI of course! This perfect combination of rice, seafood, and seaweed not only dazzles your taste buds, but also symbolizes teamwork. Take the ingredients apart and all you have is a monotonous dish of white rice grains, a tiny piece of seafood, and plain seaweed; however, put them together and you create one of the greatest culinary inventions ever made. To be a successful leader, think about sushi — you are the tiny piece of seafood. If you don’t work and cooperate with the rice, your fellow Interactors and peers, the seaweed that holds you together will break, and all you will be is that lonely raw fish piece sitting inches away (in sushi measurement, that’s a big distance) from disappointed rice >:( . But, if you work together, you will be surrounded by happy rice :) to form that unstoppable sushi combination! Every year, my Interact sushi has grown exponentially as I meet more rice. I’ve worked with amazing people to put on all kinds of events, ranging from cleaning up local beaches to holding a 2700+ Fall Leadership Conference. While it took a lot of work to make these events, the teamwork involved has fortified my seaweed bonds and helped me become a better leader. So don’t be afraid to work with your rice. Just remember that with strong collaboration, good communication, and an open attitude, YOU can make an unstoppable sushi! 26

Hi everyone, I’m Katheryn! Interact has been a huge part of my life ever since I started high school. I never would have imagined how much of an impact Interact would have on me today. I simply joined my freshman year because my brother told me to, other than that, there were no other reasons. But to my surprise, I started to like and enjoy Interact a lot more than I thought I would. Not only did Interact help me learn more about the amazing things I could do to help out my community and given me memories that I wouldn’t forget in a lifetime, but it has also showed me that I too, can be a leader and make a difference. Interact has helped me grow into a person that I would have never thought I would have become! If someone would have told the awkward, shy, little freshman me that during my senior year, I would be who I am today, I would have stared at them as if they were a freak and yell at them for trying to bring my hopes up! Outside of Interact, I like to read manga, knit, take long car rides, and eat! Although life can get pretty stressful from all the workload and responsibilities you may have, always make room to enjoy a nice, warm bowl of soup with your friends!

Hi, everyone! WARRIOR THAO HERE. I was birthed in the province of San Jose, but I reside in the valley of garlic: Gilroy, CA. When I’m not preoccupied with protecting my people, I enjoy walking on the golden shores that border the land, basking in the glory of my family, and wearing the retainers that keep my teeth straight. I am on the constant prowl for new, exciting adventures, and I go in the direction that the wind takes me. Coincidentally, the wind brought me to the club the Great Ones call “Interact”, and through many passings of the sun, the Sun God has blessed me with some of my greatest experiences and friends. Like Interactors, the Aztecs are a beautiful people, always reaching out to those in need of help and fighting for what they believe in. As a nation, the Aztecs united together and ferociously fought as one to protect their homeland against foreign oppressors to preserve their culture and continue their legacy. As an Interactor/Aztec warrior, I have been able to unite with many unique, diverse individuals to make a difference in the world, and I hope we will all continue to do so. All for one and one for all. HUZZAH.

About one year ago, I was in the same situation as most of you — going to PWR for the first time. While being new to Interact was exciting, it also felt overwhelming. When I came to PWR, I had many preconceived notions about what I would get out of the retreat; more information about Interact and meeting new people. I experienced both of those things, but I never could have imagined how great that weekend’s impact had on my life thereafter. Through the many workshops and bonding activities, I gained a sense of community that was extraordinarily compelling. I realized that Interact has an incredible power (pun intended) to motivate and enlighten every person who is involved with benevolence and integrity; therefore, embracing the philosophy of “All for One and One for All”. Now I’m about to go on a tangent about random and fun factoids about myself! I have an infatuation with running, musical theater and eating yummy vegan food. In my free time, I often look up the history of random things — did you know that when peanut M&M’s were first made, they were only in the color tan? With that said, welcome to PWR! I feel so privileged to be able to spend this weekend with such amazing, super awesome and fabulous people like you. So make the most of this weekend — meet new people, learn from the inspirational people around you and share your story with your Interact fambam, D5170. Peace. Love. Interact.

Hey everyone! This is Alyssa, and I am your Area 11 Director from Los Gatos High School. I am currently a senior, so that means this is my last year with all of you lovely Interactors. The past four years of my life would not be the same without Interact. Not only have I made unforgettable memories and friendships, but I have also transformed into a new person. Interact has given me the opportunities and motivation to break out of my shell into a leader. Through Interact, I have learned the importance of working together as a team. Even though we are all individuals, we can make a bigger impact if we come together. This year’s theme for PWR is “All for One and One for All.” As Interactors, we support each other while collaborating our efforts for the greater good. Jamie and I have chosen our team to be Hippie PWR! Hippies are known for a variety of reasons, but Jamie and I feel that hippies represent a diverse group of people who came together for a common cause — to bring peace. Interactors are a lot like hippies in that we come together from vastly different places to show the world that we can make a difference. In our past, present, and future, Interact 5170 has made a significant impact through End Polio Now, Shelter Box, Free the Youth, ‘Life, Love, Literacy,’ and more. I hope you all are ready for an amazing experience here at PWR! Remember, we are all one family, so if you ever need anything, feel free to talk to me because we are Stronger Together. Peace, Love, Interact!

HELLO INTERACTORS & WELCOME TO PWR 2013! My name is Dylan and I’m the Area 12 Director. In my free time I really like to explore, go on adventures and take photos of things. I usually have my camera everywhere I go. I am also a foodie, so talk to me about food because I know all the best places to get fat!! But on a more serious note...I’m sure every single one of you, somewhere along your lives, have heard people talk about unity and collaboration, but not necessarily experienced the extraordinary impact it can have first-hand. At PWR I encourage you to seize the opportunity and dig deep to reveal what it means to be “All for One and One for All!” Meet the future leaders in District 5170, meet your future fellow presidents, vice presidents, area directors, international coordinators, community coordinators because as one, you will all lead the District into the new year of incredible success! There is a reason why each and every one of you were chosen to attend PWR; all of you demonstrate the capability and potential to lead, all of you can make an impact on someone’s life. So again, GET YOURSELF OUT THERE AND MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME AT PWR!

Welcome to PWR, current and future presidents! I hope you’re having a blast, and that this experience is rewarding for you. I’m Nicole, the Area 13 Director, and I’m so glad you’re here! Here are a few quick facts about me: I go to Saint Francis High School, I absolutely love Japanese food but despise avocados, I’m crazy about the San Jose Sharks, and I adore Winnie-the-Pooh. More importantly though, sometimes I like to pretend I’m a superhero. As you can see, I’ve always had a fondness for superheroes, Superman in particular. When I was three or four, I’d run around the house pretending to fight off evil, and refused to take my costume off! These days I wear normal clothes but I still wonder what it’s like protecting the world from danger, perhaps with my superhero friends. After all, superheroes do work great alone, but they’re even better in teams! The Avengers, for example, overcame their differences and managed to become stronger together in order to save the world. All for one and one for all, right? Please don’t ever feel that you have to face things alone, because you don’t. Look around you; there are dozens of kind Interactors here always willing to lend a hand. We may be mighty by ourselves, but imagine how mighty we can be if we all teamed up. Hopefully you take this year’s PWR theme to heart, and maybe one day we can all be superheroes, together!

Yaaay! You’re almost done with my favorite section of this booklet, and now it’s my turn to introduce myself! I’m Alex, but you can usually get away with calling me Poh if there are other Alexs around. (And there are!) As your Publications Coordinator, I get to play with color palettes, design, and food! Why food, you ask? Well, in addition to being a proud A12 Wasabi Whale (WASSUBIII), I get to be a California Roll at PWR! And in case you didn’t know, California Rolls are the perfect combination of buttery avocado, crisp cucumber, and light, fresh crab, rolled up in puffy sushi rice and flavorful seaweed for a decadent culinary delight. (brb while I clean up my drool) In other words, they’re practically the embodiment of our PWR theme, “All for One and One for All”! Whether you’re an old president, a new officer, or anything in between, you are what gives Interact 5170 its unique (and addicting!) flavor. Treat PWR as a little ‘seasoning session’, and use this time to soak in the soy sauce of inspiration! ...okay, so I probably pushed the analogy a bit far, maybe even to the point of nori-turn, but hopefully you got my drift. And for those of you who are attending for your first time, I’m in the same boat, so don’t be afraid to talk to me, or anyone else! After all, this is a weekend of endless Interact love, and that’s just how we roll. Ha-tuna Matata!

Greetings, PWR attendee! I am half of the Publications Coordinator team for Interact, but most people know me just as Brandon (many people call me B-Yung). I enjoy pursuing my passions, namely graphic design and photography, I love playing soccer, and I am quite excited for my last season of track! Oh but I absolutely enjoy bowling now. Please invite me to all of your bowling socials :) Just tell me and I’ll roll over! One fun fact is that my favorite show is Gossip Girl. I watch it for the plot. And I like cats. I also buy shirts of animes but I never watch them. I joined Interact as a timid freshman, simply attending events at first. Interact transformed me in major ways by allowing me to leap out of my social circles, travel all around the Bay Area and make new friends everywhere! This not only made me learn new things about my relationships with people, but it also helped me to discover who I am and my potential as a leader. Everyone is capable of being a leader, and hopefully over the course of PWR 2013 you will learn that you are one already. By simply coming here, you took the first step to becoming a leader for Interact — stepping up to take more responsibility and learning to work with and for others. My hope is for you to discover more about yourself here so you can go out and form dynamic bonds with other leaders of the world and make a great impact! Go be that difference!

Hello there PWR Attendee! I’m your Information & Technology Director for this Interact year. I’ve got a love/hate relationship with technology; one moment we’re the best of friends and the next I want to chuck my laptop across the room. Besides the usual coding and maintaining the Interact 5170 website, I like to spend my days watching movies and drooling over camera equipment. I forgot to mention I’ve got a huge passion for photography, and I think I’m diagnosed with G.A.S. (Gear. Acquisition. Syndrome.). I’m always researching and looking up the latest camera equipment, and there’s not a single piece of equipment that I don’t know about. My Interact journey was a bit slow at the beginning but then it took a huge leap my junior year. I was a regular member my freshmen and sophomore year — just did the typical meetings, and a service event here and there — but junior year I truly learned what it means to be in Interact. The social aspect is great, but it’s the connections and experiences that you go through with others, that really sums up the Interact spirit. Our theme this year for PWR, “All for One and One for All’ is the very essence of Interact. It is the whole of Interact that makes a difference; together we accomplish things that others can only begin to imagine. So you must be wondering “Why the Aztecs?” Thao and I believe that the Aztecs are a perfect parallel to Interact. Not only did the Aztecs band together to accomplish things but they also persevered together against the invading Spanish. Well, I hope you have a most wonderful time at PWR and Peace.Love.Interact.

Yo yo yo its cho boi Tam Pham ^_^ I love to play a variety of sports such as basketball, badminton, and volleyball. I play competitive chess, poker, and a little bit of slam poetry as well. And as cliche as it might sound, Interact really did change my life because it gave me a whole new perspective on global issues today. I never thought that I could make a difference by simply joining the club, doing community service, fundraising, etc. Being a part of the Incredibles, it’s important to realize how much potential anyone can have. Although you can be super efficient by yourself, you’ll never get anywhere without people to help you. My favorite quote of all time is, “If you want to go fast, go alone. But if you want to go far, go together.” T.E.A.M. stands for “Together, everyone achieves more,” and this is what Interact is all about! We wouldn’t have gotten this far without working together. With teamwork and hard work, anything is possible. It is a pleasure to be in Interact because we are all in this together and we will achieve our goal. Together of course! (= I’ll end my blurb with this witty joke. There’s no I in team, but there is a TAM in team. ;)
