Your Society Update
A look back at SOA23
A huge thank you to everyone who attended the State of the Art Congress in Birmingham this June and made it such a fun and educational networking event. We were so pleased to welcome over 1000 healthcare professionals from 18 different countries. The three day, multi-streamed, congress featured great talks, plenary sessions, panel discussions, poster presentations and sold-out interactive workshops. There was also a packed exhibition hall featuring more than 50 exhibitors and lots of opportunities for networking, including a drinks reception and a fun social night with a live band at the Jam House. We would like to thank all our speakers for sharing their expertise and giving such excellent talks. The plenary sessions explored the challenges in workforce planning, the state of rehabilitation in the UK and new concepts and explorations in lung physiology in collaboration with the Physiological Society. Our other sessions over the three days covered some of the latest science in infection and inflammation, acute cardiology, ARDS, ECMO, liver failure, delirium, trauma, neurosciences (in collaboration with NACCS), shared decision making in perioperative care and High Flow Nasal Oxygen. Other sessions looked at building tomorrow’s ICUs, and workshops on clinical debriefing and developing multi-professional careers, as well as an outstanding session on a Shakespearean approach to breaking bad news in the ICU hosted by the team from NHSBT. Sustainability was another major theme for the congress with a session on greening the NHS and the infamous Cauldron session featuring lots of ideas on how to make our ICUs and hospitals greener presented by trainee doctors. Legal and ethical challenges at end of life were also explored by our LEAG team, and managing disabilities was highlighted in a brilliant thought-provoking session. We were also delighted to host the JICS editorial team presenting their choice publications. But most importantly the abstract sessions saw you, the multi-professional clinical and research community, present your fantastic work being carried out across the country and beyond. We had everything from basic sciences to clinical pearls impacting patient care, ultrasound ninjas to basics of critical care. And for the first time we hosted excellent sessions by the Specialty Doctors Professional Advisory Group (SAS PAG) and Trainee Research in Intensive Care network (TRIC). So, If you missed any of the presentations, remember that they are available to watch on-demand until December. We are now busy planning next year’s event which will take place at the ACC on the banks of Liverpool’s world heritage waterfront. We hope to be showcasing yet more of the exciting work going on across the country and the globe and discussing and debating the controversial subjects affecting everyday life in our hospitals and beyond. The interactive workshops will take place on 17 June 2024 and the main Congress from 18 – 20 June 2024. If you would like to exhibit, sponsor or participate as a speaker, please contact mani@ics.ac.uk. More information including abstract submission and conference registration will be appear on the main SOA24 website soon. See you at SOA24! @ics_updates
