Baker‘Autumn Leaves’
Narrative
Location: Crathes Castle Lake – Royal Deeside
Nestling in the grounds of Crathes Castle just as you enter the grounds from the main Royal Deeside Aberdeen to Braemar road, there lies an artificial lake. It is worthy of further investigation in all four seasons and there is a relatively easy walk all around the perimeter.
This image was captured on the spur of the moment. The leaves were drifting by at different speeds and there was only a brief period when they were traveling together. Being so late in the year it was getting dark and a dull day, as a result there was little or no reflection on the water, adding to the dramatic contrast.

‘Evening Glow’
Location: Loch a Chaoruinn – Nr Summer Isles
We arrived in Ullapool in the early evening and after a light dinner headed north on the A835 and then northwest on the unclassified road towards Auchiltibuie. (Turn off at Drumrunie and head towards the Summer Isles.)
After visiting the Summer Isles coast and on the way back I spotted this tiny lochan by the roadside. There was a hint of final sun colour in the sky even though it was well past 9 o’clock. Stones made the ideal foreground and a small fish jumped at the right time to provide the ripples. (Brown Trout or Pike possibly?)

‘The Boathouse’
Location: Loch Farr - Invernesshire
Loch Farr is near the end of the mountain and moor road leading from Tomatin near the A9 trunk road, and the hamlet of Farr which is near the north end of Loch Ness.
I had passed the loch several times but access to this view was always blocked by vehicles. On this occasion the roadside was clear and it was an interesting little walk to and around the boathouse. The peaty water lends itself to the quiet seclusion, as does the dilapidated building and bench.

‘Loch Morlich’
Narrative
Location: Loch Morlich – Cairngorm National Park
On the way from Aviemore to the ski resort and funicular railway at the Cairngrom Ski Centre sits Loch Morlich. A centre for water sports and wild swimming it is one of those places which is different every time you visit.
The traditional image of the loch is the view looking towards the Cairngorm mountain range. On this day it looked so dramatic looking towards the east that I decided to break from tradition.

‘Summer Isles’
Location: Loch Canaird – Nr. Ullapool
Traveling out of Ullapool one evening, and towards the north on the A835 just past Ardmair, I came upon this scene where the shafts of light reminded me of the famous Turner painting of Ely Cathedral interior.
This scene is looking towards the northwest, Isle Martin sits on the left, with the Summer Isles beyond.

‘Gordon the Hairy Coo’
Location: Strathnairn, Invernesshire
There is a wee road which leads from Farr to Crask between the head of Loch Ness and Inverness. ‘Gordon’ was standing in a large puddle cooling down on a hotter than average August day.
A poignant summer for me as my father had died earlier in the year and my daughter married in July. Taken with my dad’s camera, (as he had a better one than me,) the FinePix did well for several years until I went over to Nikon.

Narrative
‘Into the West’
Location: From Knockan Crag Nature Reserve, Invernesshire
Named after the Annie Lennox song from the end of the Lord of the Rings Trilogy, ‘Into the West’ depicts a day in a decidedly untypical Scottish July heatwave. Taken looking to the west over Lochan an Ais from just off the A835.
On the famous North Coast 500, (NC500) the Knockan Crag Nature Reserve offers many beautiful views from the road. In the centre of the image lies a hill called Stac Pollaidh (Stack Polly) which is a challenging yet rewarding climb with unrestricted 360° views from the top. Captured from below road level the loch looks different to the roadside view. Sunlight and clouds just make this image.
