â– PRODUCT LAUNCH AT FORMULA 1 TEAM HQ i (Corporate Data Archiving) and where the Polycom system fits into long term document archiving.
Paul was fo llow ed by Stephan W elp, managing director of Microbox, Germany, who described the w o rkin gs of the Polycom system in more detail, with the help of a well prepared presentation. It was a pity that it could not be rounded off S te p h e n W elp w ith a dem onstration but Stephan managed to get the message across very well, in theory at least.
The Venue Towards the end of last year a promotional event was arranged at the headquarters of the Jordan Formula 1 racing team, adjacent to the Silverstone racing course in Northamptonshire and home to the British Grand Prix. The joint presenters were Imation, Microbox and The Microfilm Shop. Imation organised the show, Microbox manufacture the Polycom unit, which was being showcased, and The Microfilm Shop market it, via Imation, in the UK. It was well attended, which possibly proves the value of choosing an interesting venue and it has to be said that Jordan Grand Prix Ltd was an interesting location. Unfortunately, however, due to the proximity to the start of the Grand Prix season and the sensitivity of the Jordan engineers tow ards w hatever new developments they were working on, we were not allowed the usual tour of the factory. We were, though, given a fascinating 30 minute talk by a member of the Jordan management team who clearly knew his subject inside out, which gave a little light relief away from the topic of 'imaging'.
The Speakers The day began around 9.00am with a coffee reception and at 9.30 Phil Jones of Imation made a welcoming speech and introduced Paul Negus from The Microfilm Shop who gave a presentation on the CDA P h il Jo n e s
Tim Nixon, as chairm an of the Data A rch ivin g Association (DAA) made a brief appearance supposedly giving a UK perspective on Document Archiving but, in reality, spending most of his allotted time introducing and 'plugging' "The Green Sheet" of which he is editor. Finally Andy Pibworth spoke knowledgeably of the advantages of using analogue images for archival purpose. Andy is very well known throughout the UK after many years with Kodak and, currently, as a highly respected member of the BSI (British Standards Institute) imaging standards committee.
The Product The Polycom is, in effect, a small COM unit taking digital images and transferring them to microfilm. It is, they claim, a new concept for long term storage of digital documents as the Polycom unit simply links up to your existing PC and converts the digital information to analogue suitable for archiving though, as mentioned earlier, we were unable to witness a demonstration due to technical problems. All in all it was a good worthwhile day out. The P o ly co m sy ste m
