Gratek joins Plasmec Systems It was announced on 10th May 1993 that Gratek Limited and Plasmec Systems have completed negotiations to merge the companies. i Plasmec Systems, a member of the Plasmec Group, are wellknown in the industry for the Microphax range of readers, acquired from Halma pic in 1991, and the Mekel microform digitisers for which they are European distributors.

Plasmec Systems are a modern manufacturing company recognised as a manufacturer and supplier of state of the art document handling and communications equipment.

Gratek’s current order book is at a record level and the merger will assist the company to cope with the recent dramatic upturn in trade. Gratek’s Managing Director, Graham King, stated that not only will production costs be reduced by joining Plasmec but the headaches involved with sub-contracting fabrication will disappear. All the production, from metal bending to precision engineering of camera head components, and assembly and testing, will now take place under one roof at the Plasmec Systems Farnham site. Graham King said that he would have had to take on larger premises and more staff to support the increased business — “ merging with Plasmec was the obvious solution to our production problems”.

Gratek will continue to supply top quality reconditioned production equipment and have an impressive display of cameras, processors and duplicators in the Farnham showroom.

Product News Minolta announces new software

Minolta Corporation’s Document Imaging Systems Division (DIS) recently announced the new MicroAccess 3000 software module. MicroAcess 3000 software, which can be installed on either stand-alone or networked personal computers (PCs), is designed to work in conjunction with Minolta’s MicroDAX 3000 electronic microfilm image processing system.

MicroDAX 3000 is to take advantage of both analogue and digital imaging technologies to automate traditional timeconsuming operations in document management applications.

MicroDAX 3000 permits images that have been scanned and digitized from microforms to be printed, faxed or merged with text files, such as word processing documents or forms.

In addition, other functions such as redaction (or specialized masking) and extraction can be performed on scanned documents.

MicroAccess 3000 is a low-cost software module that provides users with access to scanned microfilm images and MicroDAX 3000 functionality without requiring an MS 1000 Microfilm Scanner, a key component of the MicroDAX 3000 System. PC users with MicroAccess 3000 can receive compressed images from a MicroDAX 3000 scanning workstation via E-mail, decompress the images and then view, edit, merge, fax or print the image. “ MicroDAX 3000 will permit the design of systems that can deliver microfilm-based images to anyone on a network,” said Glenn Magnell, director of marketing for DIS. “ It will work with virtually any Windows-based electronic mail program or other network communications packages. When used in conjuction with E-mail, it will allow users to make a request

to a MicroDAX 3000 scanning station for a film-based image, have the scanned image attached to the E-mail reply, and then allow the requestor to perform functions with that image similar to those of a MicroDAX 3000 workstation. This includes being able to print to a standard desktop laser printer. “ MicroAccess 3000 also can be used on stand-alone PCs. Images can be transferred from a MicroDAX 3000 workstation via modem or by floppy disk. The recipient can then decompress the images with this module. “ MicroAccess 3000 solves a pressing business need: how to make information stored on microfilm readily accessible to people who need it, anywhere in the company or organization, without having to go through the tedious steps of making a paper print and sending it through inter-office mail or hand delivering it. MicroAccess 3000 simply takes advantage of the capabilities of MicroDAX 3000 and E-mail to deliver images. It’s important to note that the images that are being transmitted are compressed images. This is a critical point when managing the volume of data moving on a network. MicroAccess 3000 will decompress the images when received at the PC workstation. Viewed from one perspective, you could say MicroAccess 3000 is a form of entry level workflow for microfilm-based imaging.”

Product News New Bell & Howell products introduced at AIIM Show FD 4400 document retrieval and distribution system

This advanced retrieval system is designed to bridge the gap between microfilm and digital systems by offering users the flexibility of digital technology, along with the security of microfilm.

The FD 4400 scans and digitizes images from all types of microform so they can be faxed or printed at the required destination. Unlike traditional film-based retrieval methods which require operators to make a print and then distribute it via fax or regular mail, the FD 4400 automatically locates the correct image and faxes it directly to the desired location.

This reduces distribution time from hours or days to seconds. “ This revolutionary system increases productivity by enabling the user to automatically retrieve and distribute documents to many locations. It is especially attractive to users whose documents need to meet legal or archival storage requirements,” said Product Manager J. Michael Gier.

Designed for ease of operation, the workstation creates a comfortable work environment by accommodating the monitor, keyboard and controller. The large anti-glare screen, image rotation and scan controls ensure images are easy to read. A variety of zoom lenses reduces the need to change lenses.

The FD 4400 document retrieval and distribution system offers such advanced features as image verification to ensure images are readable before they are sent. Digital displays and audible signals also keep operators informed of film supply, document count and camera conditions. Both standard spool or Bell & Howell CartridgePak II™ film can be used.

The optional endorser automatically imprints 500 checks or share drafts per minute while meeting all U.S. Reg. CC and international requirements. Positioning indicators show the operator where to feed documents in order to endorse in any of the three imprint areas, saving operators time and guesswork.

Future option upgrades include document scanning/filming 24 X and 51X camera reductions, tri-level image marking and image numbering. “ The Bell & Howell ImagR desktop microfilm camera will set a new standard for speed and reliability,” said Director of Capture Products Larry Turner. “ Our new, straight-through paper path design is truly unique. New Microimage Digital Scanner 300

Anacomp Inc. announced the introduction of the Microimage Digital Scanner 300, a low cost, full function workstation for digitizing and electronically processing micrographic images on demand. The new product was featured at the annual conference and exhibition of the Association for Information and Image Management (AIIM) in Chicago in early April.

The Microimage Digital Scanner 300 scans and digitizes micrographic images, allowing them to be viewed, edited, or enhanced on a personal computer (PC) screen. The digitized image then can be sent electronically to a laser printer or fax machine, or distributed over an electronic network to another image-capable device.

The product is designed primarily for use with standard format 105mm microfiche, but an optional rollfilm attachment allows scanning of 16mm or 35mm rollfilm.

The Digital Scanner 300 will be priced at less than $5,000 — significantly less than its nearest competitor — while offering certain functions available only on much costlier systems, according to David Noll, Anacomp’s marketing manager for retrieval products. “ There is very strong demand for an affordable, fiche-based scanner,” Noll explains. “ Our product has many of the capabilities of competing systems, but at a fraction of the cost.”

A principal advantage of the Digital Scanner 300 is its open architecture design, allowing easy integration into many PC systems on the market. An IBM 486 or compatible, along with a Super VGA monitor, is recommended. The scanner software runs under DOS 5.0 and operates in the userfriendly Microsoft Windows 3.1 environment.

David Noll notes that the Digital Scanner 300 is ideal for any traditional microfiche user — financial institutions, insurance companies, legal firms, and other businesses with exacting customer service requirements. “ Until now,” he says, “ no system has made it so easy — and affordable — to selectively retrieve, scan, and electronically process customer statements and similar records on fiche. The Digital Scanner 300 adds a new dimension to information management in a highly flexible, easily configured, and affordable way.”

Noll adds that although the Digital Scanner 300 occupies an exclusive niche in the scanner marketplace, it can also work well in tandem with high demand, dedicated conversion systems.

“Anacomp’s interest is in assuring that microfiche users enjoy maximum flexibility in their business processes, which the Digital Scanner 300 addresses. However, we think that our system can also be a good complement to systems primarily designed for higher volume, rollfilm conversion use.”

Ultra low speed editing

Printed armature motors provide smooth, low speed running without a gearbox.

A change from AC motors to compact DC printed armature motors has enabled Rochester-based Solar Microfilm’s bulk microfilm editors to transport film slowly and smoothly, so that pages can be checked. The ultra-slim ‘pancake’ motors from Printed Motors Ltd. of Bordon, Hampshire, have been shownto operate smoothly at as little as 2 rpm without a gearbox, whilst also permitting fast winding without problems.

Solar Microfilm Managing Director, John Beckingham, explains that high volume microfilm users such as credit card companies, banks and football pools often commit more than a million documents per day to microfilm. Each film has to be quality checked to ensure that every document is properly reproduced, and that it was not folded or otherwise made illegible when photographed.

To enable users to carry out this procedure, Solar Microfilm has designed, and is now manufacturing, one of the world’s few high volume editing systems. This is essentially a microfilm reader equipped with powered, large capacity spools and a precision brake operated by a fast-action foot control. Frames can be viewed continuously at whatever speed the the operator feels comfortable with and stopped instantly if a problem is spotted. Once films have been checked, the system enables the operator to package the film in smaller units, as open spools or in cartridges or C-Clips.

Not only must the motors be capable of running at speeds from as little as two rpm to several thousand rpm, but they must also be capable of being stopped almost instantly. Solar Microfilm had originally produced its editing system using AC motors, but found that these would not drive the film transport effectively at less than about 70 rpm. “ Customers kept asking if we could make the film feed more slowly” said John Beckingham. “ Until we found out about Printed Motors’ DC printed armature motors, the answer had to be ‘No’, beacause we couldn’t afford the speed loss and noise of fitting a gearbox”.

He went on to explain that to many customers, particularly the banks (and especially in Switzerland), keeping noise levels down is of key importance.

After seeing printed armature motors demonstrated at an exhibition, John Beckingham met Frank White of Printed Motors, who was able to show that ultra-slim PML pancake motors could run as slowly as 2 rpm under load without and cogging, and as quickly as 6,000 rpm if required, all without a gearbox. The printed armature motor was far quieter than the conventional AC motor and, almost as important, had much less inertia than a DC motor with a normal armature, so needed less braking to achieve a virtually instant stop. “ Calculations showed that we needed a 9 Nm brake for a conventional armature, whereas the Printed Motors unit needs only a 2 Nm brake” said John Beckingham. “ That represents a very considerable cost saving on the braking mechanism, and less wear on the motor bearings”.

Solar Microfilm worked in collaboration with Ashurst Electronics of Bournemouth to develop a highly specialised electronic controller for the system, and arranged with Printed Motors for the two GPM12 pancake motors used for each system to be supplied with extra long shafts. This makes it possible for the motors to drive the encoders which are mounted with them to provide data for the control system.

New processor from Deighton

At the IMC exhibition in Brussels, September 21-23 1993, The Deighton Corporation will release what they describe as the first truly new microfilm processor in a decade.

The Deighton 3000E microfilm processor retains all of the advantages of simple leaderless film processing associated with Deighton’s existing range of processors. However, the processor has a completely re-engineered chemical dispersment system to provide even processing and density.

Major emphasis has been placed on the ecological aspects of microfilm processing. The standard processor comes with a simple system for chemical loading and disposal, keeping operator handling to a minimum. Each processor is fitted with a silver recovery unit to reduce fixer consumption and make fixer disposal easier.

Re-engineered plumbing controls ensure that the operator does not have to gain access to the interior of the machine.

This is required by most international safety standards.

The 3000E is very competitively priced. The unit will be exclusively distributed by Deighton’s worldwide distributor network.

AP-6 cuts water waste

The ImagePrinter prints document images up to almost 14" by 14", compressed or uncompressed, at resolutions as high as 400 dpi. Individual raster lines are printed at a rate of 3000 per second. This provides a throughput of 45 pages per minute for A4 documents at 300 dpi.

Due to the ability of EIM systems to digitally enhance images through thresholding and selective filters, images produced on the ImagePrinter are usually more legible and consistent than those produced with the older micrographics equipment.

Formats, titles and image location are software controlled and easily programmed. Interchangeable lenses provide image reduction of 24 X , 42 X and 48 x .

Microfilm being a well-established technology, it is a real surprise when a new product is developed from scratch, to be sold into this near saturated marketplace.

It is even more surprising when the new product is a reader printer, as this is the technology dominated by the large Japanese multinationals. How could an American start-up hope to develop a competitive technology.

Out of this has come a radically different machine: completely of their own design and with three patents to boot. Even the print engine, normally the domain of Canon and other Japanese companies, is their own, covered by the above mentioned patents. The unit is one-third the cubic volume of most competitors, half the weight, half the copy cost and uses full plane exposure to create superb image quality.

The range is comprised of three basic units: the standard (negative) printer, a positive printer and the recently introduced IP250 which offers auto-image rotation when printing. Midlands Microfilm Showcase The Midland Microfilm Showcase was held at the Forte Crest Coventry Hotel on the outskirts of Coventry. It was a two day show on the 9th and 10th of June 1993.

Although the total number of visitors was disappointing, the quality of those that did attend was extremely high, and most exhibitors seemed to acquire several potentially valuable leads.

It was an experimental, pilot project to see if a small regional end user show might prove more attractive than always being in London. Had it been a success in the Midlands then the plan was to move around the U.K. with perhaps 3 or 4 venues per year. As it is, however, it appears to be a case of “ back to the drawing board”.

This exhibition was aimed, almost exclusively, at end users rather than trade — was this a mistake? Perhaps we should concentrate on a purely trade-to-trade show, as quite a high proportion of manufacturers’ sales are to the trade. This magazine would then be the perfect promotional vehicle.

The exhibition itself was very good — a clean, tidy and compact show with thirteen blue chip companies participating. The venue was hard to fault with accessibility excellent, for exhibitors and visitors alike, and superb facilities.

Trade News Kodak shapes future of COM technology

With an ongoing drive toward new film products, as well as continuous improvement of existing ones, Kodak has a new dry microfilm under development that will be announced this year for availability in early 1994.

The next generation of Kodak Optistar DL plus microfilm will provide users with improved duplicate clarity, darker character images and greater resistance to damage from handling.

This evolutionary product will also be formulated for greater speed uniformity and longer shelf life. Users will be able to produce more duplicates per master, with even better edge quality and transport characteristics. “ We are in the final stages of improving an already successful microfilm,” said David A. Nadeau, Kodak Office Imaging’s general manager of marketing for imaging and data processing products. “ This new product promotes Kodak’s multi-media strategy, which bridges the gap between film-based COM technology and digital output solutions — including 8mm tape and optical disk — to assure future access to important data,” Nadeau said. “ While customers may use digital media for short-term access and distribution of information, they can use microfilm for long-term storage and accessibility.”

Kodak pioneered dry laser film and laser COM devices in the mid-1970s, Nadeau explained. Since those products were introduced, Kodak has brought several generations of COM equipment and dry laser films to the market. The most recent of those products is Kodak Optistar DL plus microfilm 2473, which has been available for the past six months.

Introduced in 1992, Kodak Optistar DL plus microfilm is a

rapid-access, dry-process film with excellent clarity on original fiche and duplicates. With less curl and easier tracking through automatic duplicators, Optistar DL plus microfilm enhances productivity for the end-user by requiring less frequent operator intervention.

Since its introduction, this new film has enjoyed widespread customer acceptance. Kodak officials report that Optistar DL plus microfilm has grown to fill a wide variety of applications, and that it has lived up to its promise as a premier-quality film that extends the viability of dry COM as a cost-effective, high-quality, on-demand output solution for information storage and distribution.

In addition to looking forward to the new product, current Kodak Optistar DL plus customers can participate in a no­ charge quality control programme. The Kodak Optiguard quality control programme helps customers maximize image quality by offering inspections of sample master and duplicate fiche films by the Kodak Quality Control Laboratory.

Results of the inspections are reported to the customer. If equipment service problems are identified by the lab, a service call is scheduled. In addition, Kodak media products representatives and authorized Kodak media products distributors are always available to provide on-site support. “ Market dynamics are changing,” Nadeau said. “ Customers are looking to alternative technologies for storing and distributing computer-based information. Computer output to microfilm is a technology that can assure users access to stored information far into the future — unlike other output technologies that may become unretrievable due to associated hardware or format obsolescence. Other than paper, microfilm is the only analogue means of storage that can be scanned directly back into a computer at a future time.”

They promote and sell technology instead of promoting and recommending the best solution

There are three ways of storing paper documents. In file cabinets. On microfilm, with the most common forms being 16mm rollfilm and 105mm microfiche. Using electronic document storage on a variety of computer memories, i.e. hard disk, WORM, read-write O.D. and writable CD-ROM. There are strengths and weaknesses to each.

Both paper and microfilm, being human readable, are rock solid as archival media, if properly stored.

The strength of electronic imaging is retrieval. It’s also very convenient for the user. In most cases, a few keystrokes and the document is on your monitor. The obvious weakness of electronic imaging flows out of recent history. Computer memories in use today may be obsolete 10 years from now, making it an unreliable storage medium.

My point is that the technology hype we’ve been fed in recent years is becoming a joke. We should all shake our bias towards one or more of the three information storage methods and recognize they all have their place. AIIM should do everything it can to help its members understand the proper role of each technology. It would be helpful to all concerned if we ate a little humble pie and remembered we’re not going to change the world.

At last year’s ARMA show, the records manager of a large company said, ‘You know, all the vendors here understand their products very well, but they know very little about records management.’ She said it all. It’s time for all of us — in micrographics and especially in electronic imaging — to stop selling technology and start explaining the ‘real world’ strengths and weaknesses of paper, film and electronic storage to our customers. They — and we — will benefit from it.”

Symtronics confirms rumours

Trade News Kodak causes concern

Some significant, well established microfilm bureaux are expressing concern over the role of Kodak’s service bureau, Imaging Services, based at Rugeley.

Senior executives of these bureaux have asked me to invite comment from other companies who may feel aggrieved and, hopefully, some clarification from Kodak.

The worries, which seem, on the surface, to have some justification, are focussed on the apparent contradiction of Kodak recruiting film buying bureaux into their ‘club’ as BLink members, whilst at the same time expecting Rugeley to be commercially successful by selling their services into the same marketplace. Imaging Services enjoys the unique position of being able to enter the premises of a potential customer under the highly respected Kodak banner — this must prove a great sales aid. Added to that they can, presumably, acquire materials at very favourable prices and get a headstart on Kodak generated enquiries which would, otherwise, have been passed on to B-Link members.

The concerned companies believe that Kodak has a major part to play as a world leader in film and equipment technology, but the existence of Rugeley, possibly mis­ represented or misunderstood, is giving rise to rumours and resentment which cannot be in the overall interests of Kodak.

I would like to hear from anyone who has first hand experience of such problems, if, indeed, they actually exist, and if Kodak is prepared to issue a statement I will be happy to publish it, in a prominent position, in the next issue of the magazine.

Symtronics, the Oxfordshire based microfilm equipment repair company, has been expanding steadily for the past 7 years. Rumours have recently been bandied around the industry that the growth achieved is due in no small way to the high level of service offered. Proprietor Simon Lonsdale, when pressed, admitted that the company’s objectives were to provide a fast, efficient and low cost service both to the trade and end users. He continued “ We have secretly been providing a quality repair and maintenance service for micrographic equipment for an ever increasing customer base; it seems now, that word is out”.

Recent appointments to the company include Jeff Biddle, ex Canon and Datagen, who’s task is to reinforce the company’s policy of excellence, by insisting that all the engineers wear suits and when a machine is serviced, it stays serviced . . . we even polish the outer casing!!

Symtronics have recently become dealers for the Canon range of Micrographic products; Nigel Main, ex Microphax and Bell + Howell Micromedia, has now joined the company to promote the Canon equipment and to increase the service side of the business. Nigel has contacted many of our service clients to check if there are any complaints, one customer commented that another of the company’s new recruits, Matthew Hoyles, was a bit on the tall side, so we are at present looking for a short engineer in the Banbury area.

The Office Manager at Symtronics, Torose Collins (Simon’s mother-in-law), has also made an invaluable contribution towards the success of Symtronics, “ She knows where everyone and everything is, at all times, which is great for the business . . . but detrimental for my golf handicap” comments Simon.

Trade News Kodak and Canon — micrographics alliance

Eastman Kodak Company’s Office Imaging organization and the Image Management Systems group for Canon, Inc. today announced plans to cooperate in the research, development and production of microfilm-based products for the office. “ By leveraging Canon Inc.’s Image Management Systems group and Kodak’s Office Imaging organization expertise, customers will benefit by having a wider range of products, with improved performance, and allow both companies to bring new product offerings to market more quickly,” said Haruo Murase executive vice president of Canon U.S.A., Inc. “ Our goal is to enhance the micrographics product portfolio offered by each company and to provide high-quality products in response to worldwide customer demand,” according to Edgar J. Greco, Kodak vice-president and worldwide general manager for Office Imaging.

By reducing research, development and production costs, both companies expect to optimize worldwide microfilm markets. Each company is expecting to announce new, customer-driven products in 1993.

Under the alliance, Kodak will draw upon Canon’s expertise in microfilm reader printers and market select Canon manufactured reader printers under the Kodak brand. Canon will utilize Kodak’s expertise by marketing select microfilmers manufactured by Kodak under the Canon brand to meet the specifications of Canon customers. To further supplement each company’s microfilm-based product line, Canon and Kodak plan to jointly develop new microfilm products.

Kodak and Olivetti to market image systems

Olivetti and Kodak have announced a joint marketing agreement which will enable the two companies to offer a complete, fully integrated and cost effective document image management system. Olivetti will supply Kodak’s back office imaging systems in conjunction with Olivetti’s own front office business process re-engineering systems.

Under the agreement, Kodak will also be Olivetti’s partner and preferred supplier of backlog capture and conversion services, enabling companies to enter documents from virtually any medium efficiently into their electronic system.

Kodak will also OEM scanners for use in Olivetti business solutions.

Customers wishing to re-engineer business processes and improve workflow need to be able to access a wide range of documents and images on the computer system. One of the main factors which prevented many companies adopting a fully computerised approach was the prohibitive cost of entering thousands or even millions of existing paper or microfilmed documents onto the system. Using Kodak’s high speed scanning technology, either via a bureau service or by integrating it into an Olivetti document management system, Olivetti anticipates that the cost and time of conversion will be significantly reduced. “ Through our new relationship with Kodak we can now present end users with a total solution from a single source using the best technology from both companies,” says Mark Churchward, Divisional Manager of Olivetti’s Document Management Division. “As a result of Kodak’s Image Capture Technology, we will now be able to input information into our document management systems on 18

customer sites more quickly, more efficiently and more economically than ever before. Headway appointed Kodak distributor

Kodak Office Imaging has appointed Headway Technology Group as first UK distributor of their Automated Disk Library (ADL) Model 560E. Trade News DIS ’93, Utrecht, Holland

Avas Systemen of Holland represented The Microfilm Shop on their stand at the DIS ’93 microfilm show which was held in Utrecht 2 - 5 March 1993.

There were approximately 5700 microfilm-minded visitors registered over the four day exhibition.

The message from the show was that, particularly for high volume archives such as banks, hospitals, insurance companies, etc., microfilm is still the best medium. There were also some low cost microfilm systems, with blip retrieval, designed specifically for low volume usage.

Avas were showing the whole range of Microfilm Shop jackets, spools, clips and boxes alongside the Solar motorised film winder and the Photomatrix 1-2-1 desktop diazo duplicator.

In conclusion, the show was very successful.

Africa hosts International Records congress

The third annual congress of the International Records Management Council (IRMC), takes place in Harare, Zimbabwe from 6th-8th September 1993.

This year’s congress is being hosted by the Records Archives and Information Management Association of Zimbabwe. It will be the first time that the event has taken place in Africa.

The associated exhibition “ InfoAccess”, should be of great interest to suppliers of specialist data storage and retrieval equipment and consumables, as well as vendors of more general IT hardware and software who are keen to maximise sales in the area.

The exhibition is being organised by specialist Africa event organisers FSG Communications Ltd. of Cambridge, England.

Keynes Papers available on microfilm

In these troubled times, “ the century’s greatest economist”, John Maynard Keynes, is often quoted in the national media and the corridors of power. His theories are very much in vogue and have never been more pertinent to a Britain with too much debt, too much office space and too few factories.

A recent biography of Keynes commented: “ There seems little doubt that the world would be significantly different had his policies been pursued . . . ” The validity of Keynesian economics is still the subject of passionate debate among economists worldwide.

Outside economics, he was a man of wide-ranging interests.

He was, for instance, a member of the Bloomsbury Group, a major writer, a collector of books and paintings and, not least, a businessman. He left behind a huge collection of papers which record and illuminate every facet of his thoughts, life, interests and activities. They offer fresh insights, for instance, into the development of his vision of what true economic and social progress should be.

Now Chadwyck-Healey, the Cambridge academic publishers, have announced that this collection is to be made available — and easily accessible — on microfilm. It will be published in five instalments. The first reels were available in December 1992 and the project will be completed in November 1993.

The microfilm edition of The John Maynard Keynes Papers in King’s College, Cambridge, makes his letters and personal papers widely available for the first time. Researchers in many disciplines will more easily be able to study this primary documentary record of one of the most important and controversial figures this century.

Keynes was a man of many parts, and his correspondents range from H.M. Asquith and Stanley Baldwin to E.M. Forster, Friedrich von Hayek, Frank Harris, T.E. Lawrence and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Rarely does one person’s archive attract so much attention or offer so many research opportunities.

The Papers are divided into various sections, with the largest section concentrating on economics and international finance and affairs. Other main sections include his visits (Russian and American), his business and educational interests, his personal papers (and those of his wife, the Russian ballet star Lydia Lopokova) and his correspondence with Lytton Strachey.

The complete collection will consist of approximately 170 reels — accompanied by a newly prepared printed Catalogue — and will be priced at £9700.

Trade News New scanning bureau for aperture cards

The launch of a microfilm aperture card scanning bureau for the benefit of all companies in the UK has recently been announced. The new company, Gloscan Ltd., has been set up

by Gloucester Micrographics Ltd. As a result of a number of requests for scanning and extensive market research they have purchased the latest 400 dpi scanner to offer customers the facility to enter existing libraries of microfilm aperture cards into CAD or engineering document management systems.

They can also take original drawings and produce aperture cards for scanning which will provide equal, if not better, quality imagefiles from the original at a lower cost. This gives the additional benefit of a legal archival microfilm copy as part of the package. If required they can also offer basic editing services for de-skewing, cropping, etc. of the captured images.

Even though there are few image format standards, Gloscan believe that they have the capability to handle the majority of them and transport the image files on the most suitable media into your system.

An important part of the system is the supply of a tailormade database of the cards provided for inclusion in a drawing retrieval package.

Poway serves as bridge to Micrographics’ future

In building a foundation beneath its vision of the future, Anacomp has invested in a massive new manufacturing, engineering, and sales facility in Poway, California, just north of San Diego. The 340,000 square foot, 26 million dollar facility was completed in October 1992. “ If there was ever any question about the important role that micrographics and Anacomp will play in the future of information management, Poway should answer it,” says Louis P. Ferrero, Anacomp chairman and chief executive officer.

Cordell Engineering’s Chairman of the Board, Richard C. Reedy, recently announced that Richard P. Santos has been appointed Executive Vice President of Cordell Engineering, Inc. As co-founder of IRIS Graphics, Mr. Santos had successfully launched and marketed numerous technologies and products in the imaging field. In addition, he identified markets for alternative graphic imaging technologies, notably changing the pre-press industry’s approach to colour proofing.

Mr. Santos built and managed IRIS Graphics’ worldwide sales organization, with distribution channels throughout North America, Europe and Asia. As a result, Mr. Santos pushed the company’s sales growth to $37M by 1991. Today, IRIS Graphics is the acknowledged worldwide leader in digital colour printing and proofing.

Mr. Reedy, Chairman of Cordell, noted that “ Mr. Santos developed and drove the marketing and sales organisations at IRIS Graphics. With his prior experience and accomplishments we are certain Richard will guide Cordell Engineering, Inc. to a leadership role in the film processor marketplace”.

Prior to joining IRIS Graphics in 1984, Mr. Santos played a similar role at Raytheon Company — building that company’s Graphic Systems business to a status of $12M annually. While at Raytheon, Mr. Santos was responsible for the sales of display advertising and editorial systems to major metropolitan daily newspapers worldwide.

Cordell offers a complete line of film processors for the Medical Imaging Graphic Arts field. The company is privately held and has been in business since 1963.

The building, which consolidated 1,000 Anacomp employees from 11 sites scattered around San Diego, is the multi-national company’s largest facility. It houses about one-quarter of the firm’s worldwide workforce.

The facility is the focal point for many of Anacomp’s manufacturing operations. Computer Output Microfilm (COM) imaging systems, a full line of micrographic readers and reader-printers, and the company’s new digital scanner workstation are all produced at Poway. The centre also houses Anacomp’s software development, engineering, R&D, product planning, and maintenance operations. A product demonstration centre and a local data service centre round out Poway-based functions.

“As a company, we like to say that we ‘sell savings’ because we see one constant in today’s economy: the desire by companies to save on the cost of doing business,” notes J. Mark Woods, Anacomp president and chief operating officer. “ We have the same desire for Anacomp, and Poway is the most dramatic example in the history of our company of translating our desire for savings into deeds.”

Woods estimates that Poway will create approximately 60 million dollars in operational savings over the next 10 years through reduced rent, transportation, utility and inventory costs, as well as through efficiencies made possible by the consolidation of the company’s San Diego operations under one roof.

The Jerusalem Post on CD-ROM

A new addition to the range of CD-ROMs available from Research Publications is announced, with the signing of an agreement appointing RPI as distributor of The Jerusalem Post in all countries outside Israel.

The paper joins the expanding list of international papers available on CD-ROM from Research Publications: The Times (London) and Le Monde (Paris) are already available in their fast-expanding list of news and research sources delivered in electronic format.

The Jerusalem Post is the leading English-language newspaper in Israel, with an international reputation for accurate and unbiased reporting of political, cultural and economic events in Israel, the Middle East, and of international affairs.

A pplication Studies Combined technologies to manage income tax documentation

A new “ combination technology” system is now being used by the Ministry of Revenue (MRQ) in Quebec, Canada, an agency similar to the Internal Revenue Service in the United States.

The MRQ is responsible for processing tax returns for four million individual taxpayers in Quebec. With an average of 16 documents per file, this results in an overall volume of 64 million documents annually. These documents must be indexed, processed and available for retrieval at any time, for a period of up to 15 years.

The MRQ imaging solution, which became fully operational in March, uses a combination of technologies to give 1,800 users across Quebec the ability to make requests through an IBM mainframe to one of two imaging subsystems located in Montreal or Quebec City. The implementation of the system is the result of a close alliance between Toronto-based imaging system integrator Bell & Howell Ltd and IMNET Systems, Inc. Images are captured on film for high or low demand retrieval, using 30 custom designed Bell & Howell film capture workstations. Images are indexed at the point of capture and indices are transferred to a DEC Micro-Vax computer which controls retrieval activity on the local area network (LAN).

Requests for retrieval can be made by any of the 1,800 users on the IBM mainframe, which in turn communicates with the Micro-Vax computers supporting the two imaging LANs. Requests are then directed to one of eight IMNET robotic film jukeboxes (production of 16,000-20,000 images per day) or 18 Minolta MS1000 microfilm digitizers (production of 12,000-16,000 per day) where images are scanned into the system.

If the requested image remains on paper, then a pick-list is generated by the system and the original document is manually retrieved and electronically scanned into the system. All requests are then collated electronically and routed to the user in paper form or via fax, as required. Images can also be displayed electronically on the network via image-enabled PCs. “ This is the first system to fully integrate microfilm and digital technology on a large scale,” said President of Bell & Howell Ltd, Ray Patterson. “ Benefits to MRQ include a significant improvement in service to internal users, and ultimately Quebec taxpayers. The system eliminates conditions such as ‘out-of-file’ or ‘file-in-use’, which improve customer service.”

Patterson added, “ The overall cost of operating the document management area has been reduced dramatically with the release of office space and personnel to other government departments. The implementation costs of the system will be recovered in less than three years”.

A partnership between Image Scanning Services and Pindar Infotek has captured a £1.25 million contract to scan and index the literary works of the French National Library Service.

Won against stiff competition from 11 other companies — mainly French — the object of the project is to archive part of France’s collected literary works, ranging from the Bible to Camus and Sartre, in a form which will give readers, researchers and academics much more rapid and direct access.

Image Scanning Services, who are part of the Headway Technology Group, are converting the results of traditional microfilm and microfiche literature storage and retrieval methods into a more accessible electronic form. This will involve the company in the scanning of over 9 million frames of microfilm and microfiche.

Pindar Infotek, the informationa and database specialist business within Pindar, is responsible for scanning over 50,000 books. The books will be dismantled and pages captured to create a database which features pages of text and images exactly as they appeared in the original book. At the same time a full index will be compiled. Pindar Infotek will also create the index for the books currently stored on microfilm and microfiche. A number of the books which Pindar will scan are the only remaining copies of French classics and will need to be treated with special care.

The French Government has decided to move into electronic archiving methods for its library service in order to increase the accessibility of the information as well as to turn it into a form which can be networked and supplied to a number of display locations from a single source.

Additionally, the increasing use of the PC as an information management tool means that the service will be widening the information franchise.

Commenting on the choice of ISS and Pindar Infotek, Gerard Cathaly, Responsable Technique de Numerisation, explains, “ We chose these two companies beacause of the total proposition they offered us combining technical expertise and experience with a competitive price”.

Pindar Infotek has a significant track record in database creation and recently brought a major contract out of Germany to electronically capture patent applications from the German Patents office. Sister company, Pindar Set, maintains a database of advertisements for the production of all of the U.K.’s Yellow Pages.

Image Scanning Services already provides a paper document and microfilm scanning and data capture service to major insurance companies, utilities and government organisations throughout Europe. Part of the Headway Technology Group, ISS complements its associate companies — Headway Distribution Division who are the leading DIP peripheral distributor and Headway Scanning Systems which supplies high volume scanning OCR/ICR, and text and handprinted character recognition systems.

The contract has been dual-sourced and a French company will be carrying out a similar project.

Institute News Directory of Membership

Since the previous issue of the magazine the Institute has produced a ‘Directory of Membership’ which seems to have been fairly well received by the members.

A copy of the directory has now been included with the U.K. circulation of this issue of the Micrographics Market Place.

The Institute is now embarking on an ongoing direct mailing exercise, sending the directories far and wide. In the long term this should generate a significant amount of new business for microfilm, particularly for those companies who are listed in the directory.

Any company who has not yet joined the Institute should consider it now! The more new members that are acquired the

sooner there will be an updated reprint of the directory.

Membership will run to the 31st March 1994 and subscriptions will be calculated at the rate of £25.00 per month up to that date. All new membership fees will then be due together on 1st April 1994.

The next seminar

“ Guidelines on bureau standards” will be the title of the next seminar to be organised by the Institute. It will take place in the Birmingham area, most likely in October, and will be of interest both to bureaux and companies who employ, or who are thinking of employing, a service bureau.
