It’s been a wild ride for Canberra United since our inception in the very first Westfield W-League and we show no signs of slowing down as our team continues to compete with the best in the country And compete we have ever since the first kick-off That maiden outing was against Newcastle Jets in Round One, with Sasha McDonnell scoring the first goal in club history two minutes in, only for the Jets to emerge as winners on the day
With the first ever win on the board, against what was then called the Queensland Roar and is now known as the Brisbane Roar, the side lost again in Round three before going undefeated the remainder of the season Gong on to make the inaugural Grand Final, United fell to defeat against a strong Roar side, 2-0 at Ballymore Stadium
Successive semi- final defeats in seasons Two and Three, to Sydney FC and the re-branded Brisbane Roar, would’ve had fans wondering when it might be their turn to celebrate A remarkable unbeaten season in 2011/12 culminated in an unforgettable afternoon at McKellar Park, as United exacted revenge over the Roar 2,512 fans turned up, with the ground a sea of Green, against a smattering of defiant orange
It would be Canberra fans the happiest at the end of the 90 minutes, as the side came out on top in a five goal thriller, with two Michelle Heyman goals either side of an Ashleigh Sykes strike sealing an invincible season

Season Five saw the club miss out on finals football for the first time, finishing in fifth place only two points behind Sydney FC in fourth United were back on top in 2013/14, only conceding eight goals on the way to claiming the Premiership, one point ahead of the Sky blues in second A semi-final loss to Brisbane put a disappointing end to a season of much promise
Glory days returned to the club in 2014 With Australia hosting the 2015 AFC Asian Cup, the W-League took place entirely in 2014, running from September to December, as opposed to continuing into 2015
Ending the regular season in third, United were faced with a pair of tricky away trips in the finals The first being a semi-final match-up against Melbourne Victory, United coming out on top thanks to penalties. The Grand Final saw the team travel to Western Australia to take on Perth Glory
United opened the scoring on the day as US Import Stephanie Ochs found the back of the net 20 minutes in Glory, with 42 goals in 13 games that season, responded just past the hour mark, only for an Ashleigh Sykes double in the space of three minutes to win the title for United in remarkable fashion
The title defence ended in heartbreak, a 1-0 semi-final defeat to Sydney FC, after finishing the regular season in second Silverware was back at United in Season Nine, ending the 2016/17 season with the Premiership, thanks to goal difference Semi-Final heartbreak would again follow, as eventual champions Melbourne City got the better of United at GIO Stadium

Ray Junna took over the role in 2009 and was at the helm for seasons Two and Three, before the appointment of Czech coach Jitka Klimkova It was Klimkova that would bring silverware to McKellar, through the double in the unbeaten 2011/12 season Following Klimkova’s departure from the role in 2013, the late Liesbeth Migchelsen was appointed to the hot seat, leading United to their second crown in 2014
Rae Dower was her assistant, and would take over the top job in 2015 and was at the helm for two seasons, winning the 2016/17 League Premiership Heather Garriock took over in 2017, leading the club for what was then a record 36 games as Canberra United Head Coach Vicki Linton stepped into the role in 2020, overseeing two years at the club before Njegosh Popovich took over, who oversaw a club record 40 games

McKellar Park, the home of local National Premier League club Belconnen United, is no stranger to hosting Canberra United having been the scene of many memorable moments in the storied history of the two-times champions The venue played host to one of the most thrilling and memorable days in the club’s history, the incredible 3-2 Grand Final win over Brisbane Roar in 2012, when 2,512 people turned the ground into a sea of green and were witness to a Michelle Heyman brace and an Ashleigh Sykes goal to secure the trophy
Opened in 2002, McKellar Park is a purpose-built football venue in the North Canberra suburb of McKellar. With a capacity of just over 3,000 people, the ground includes a main stand with seating for 460 fans Much of the ground is surrounded by a grass hill, with fans close to the action from all sides The main grandstand is named after Ken Carter, who has been involved in the Belconnen Soccer Club since its formation and contributed significantly to the club's development The venue has also been referred to as the Belconnen Soccer Centre
The venue played host to Canberra United’s first ever home match, with 1,637 fans coming through the gates to witness the visit of the Central Coast Mariners on 9 November 2008 It has since borne witness to many massive occasions such as the record 7-2 win over Perth Glory in 2017
With it being host to United since the club’s formation, there have been many firsts The first United goal scored at the venue was also the first successful penalty in club history, Ellie Brush converting from the spot against the Mariners in 2008 The first time a Canberra player hit a treble in a home match came, unsurprisingly, from Michelle Heyman in a 3-1 win over Perth Glory in October 2011.

It’s a new dawn for the Lady Reds in the Ninja A-League Women’s 2025/26 Season Theo Tsiounis replaces Adrian Stenta as Head Coach, who has moved on to an assistant coach role with Adelaide United’s Isuzu UTE A-League side, as the South Australians look to build on a club record season
The Club has already farewelled a handful of players, headlined by the departure of Dominican Republic International Lucia Leon, with the wing-back having scored five times in her 26 appearances In a boost for Tsiounis in his first season, player of the year Erin Healy has re-signed for the club on a one-year deal
Adelaide provided a tricky opposition for us last season, with a loss and a draw in our two fixtures against them The all-time record heavily favours Canberra though, with 16 wins, 6 draws and 7 losses across 29 matches With a new coach, and the bulk of last season players staying, expect a tough matchup when we face the Lady Reds

Last season started with plenty of promise for Brisbane Alex Smith’s side won seven of their opening ten games, with two of those losses against Canberra, scoring an incredible 28 goals in that time While a host of names, including star players Evdokia Popadinova and Sharn Freier, have left the club, the side has managed to keep just as many whilst also adding in some new talent
Perhaps the biggest signing the Queenslanders have made is bringing former United shot-stopper and current Matildas player, Chloe Lincoln to the sunshine state Lincoln isn’t the only former United now player at the Roar, with defender Ava Piazza also joining the club Bolstering their defensive stocks, having conceded 42 times last season, will be a key task for Smith in their quest to improve on what was ultimately a disappointing seventh placed finish
Whilst it’s been a while between drinks for the Roar, success is something the club is familiar with three Premierships and two Championship trophies in their cabinet Their passionate supporter base will be expecting more this season

Melbourne City enjoyed a remarkable season under first-time Head Coach Michael Matricciani in 24/25 Going undefeated in the A-League Women’s season, City won 16 and drew 7 before bowing out in extra-time of the semi-finals second leg
The side also enjoyed a stellar run in the AFC Women’s Champions League, narrowly missing out on silverware after defeat on penalties to Chinese Super League Club Wuhan Jiangda in the final Overall, in the 31 games City played across all competitions, they won 21 matches, scoring 72 goals.
While they’ve farewelled plenty of star power, namely Rhianna Pollicina and Mariana Speckmaier, the bulk of the squad has stayed with some new additions signing on, such as experienced English defender Danielle Turner and former United winger Aideen Keane
Entering into their eleventh season of competing in the ALeague Women’s, City already have an envious eight pieces of silverware to their name, with Four Premierships and Four Championships Safe to say, they’d be favourites to claim more this season,

Goals
Lots of them That’s what Matildas superstar Michelle Heyman is all about, and she shows no sign of slowing down The 2025/26 season sees the goalscoring striker head into the Ninja A-League with a recordbreaking 119 goals to her name from 202 appearances
Given that 176 of those matches, and 107 of the goals, have come whilst wearing the green of Canberra United, then it’s no surprise that the Shellharbour born native is a huge favourite with the supporters in the National Capital And it’s a feeling that is mutual for the prolific forward
“I couldn't be happier to back in green for the new season,” Heyman said “This club means everything to me Canberra is my home, and I love pulling on the jersey each and every week in front of the best fans in the country I've had some of the most memorable moments of my career at this club, and I can't wait to get started and create more special moments.”
Moments like the title-winning double that earned Canberra United its first A-League crown in a never-to-beforgotten Grand Final at McKellar Park against Brisbane Roar in 2012 A 3-2 win that still raises a smile for all that were present in the ground that balmy, sunny, afternoon
plenty more to come from one of the most recognisable Women’s sporting athletes in the country And the fire burns deep, is still kindling, is still driving Heyman’s desire Case in point? Last year’s Finals elimination at the hands of one of her former clubs, Central Coast Mariners.
After making the top six, a major achievement for a club that was not even certain of playing around six weeks before the start of the last campaign, there was disappointment that the team could not kick on further
“While we were devastated to not go further in the finals,” Heyman revealed “Making that far was an incredible achievement from the group We want to go further this year and bring some silverware back to Canberra for our fans We’re a young squad, but I'm really proud of every single one who stepped on to the field.”
