llll Intro [ 배경 ]

The Sahel region in Africa has been directly influenced by this desertification. Sahel region is located in the southern region of Sahara desert with distance of 190 ~ 290 km by north to south, east from Sudtan, Ethiopia, west to Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Niger. The recent drought, the largest one during last 60 years, has made an intense shortage of rainfall in Sahel region and East African region, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, created over 10 million refugees so far, and over 2million children are suffering from malnutrition. As of Global Warming problem the desertification is now on the rise. So far 1/3 of land area is either the desert or semiarid region, and every year 60km2of land area is changed to desert. The main reasons of the desertification are expected as decrease of rainfall by weakened monsoon, ruined surface of the earth by excessive graze and destroy forest, and soil salinization.

llll Concept [ 개념과 생각 ]

This pattern of Nature has been existed since the beginning of the Earth, and will be continued from now on.

Human prevent the cycle of Nature >> industrial development / use of fossil fuels / deforestation / over logging / over grazing

We maintain the original flow of Nature. Turn human’s evil deed into good deed. Protect and Improve >>> Human and Nature are symbiotic with each other

Nature has its own cycle. And it has been continuously circulating and regenerating itself. This pattern of Nature has been existed since the beginning of the Earth, and will be continued from now on. But this pattern of Nature has faced a very strong obstattcle. It is the human being. The man is not the one who can survive by oneself, but utilizing the Nature surrounded. Like this, the man utiliz es energy from Nature, and Nature has lost itself and its figure gradually by these man’s behaviors. These Man’s behavior of utilizing Nature, consuming fossil fuel, over logging, over graze, deforestation, etc., have made the own cycle of Nature weaken and created difficult environment for cycling and regenerating to Nature. The man did these evil deeds to Nature, and the man has to face it by himself now. It is because the man cannot survive without Nature. Those man’s evil deeds have brought and accelerated the global warming circumstance. As a result of global warming the desertification has been appeared. This desertification make the man loose his land. Finally the man, lost his land, has been degraded down to an environmental refugee. Based on these concepts, the principle is the coexistence of the man and Nature on the direction of maintaining and improving continuous cycling of Nature by the man accompanying Nature. The coexistence can be made by the man doing good deeds instead of evil deeds to Nature. The deserted land is no more wasteland. Through the man’s behavior the deserted land would recover its original appearance. And this expansion of green can make an environmental refugee recover his base for living.

llll Case and Application [ 사례와 적용 ] EarthWorm

Circular muscle

An earthworm is a tube-shaped, segmented animal that is commonly found living in soil. Earthworms travel underground by the means of waves of muscular contractions which alternately shorten and lengthen the body.

Watching the section of earthworm, the surface, to protect inside, is consisted by cuticle protective layer, inner layer is consisted by circular muscle and longitudinal muscle, muscles to move. Inside, protected by muscles, the blood vessel is located, and internal organs are located at the centre. Green EarthWorm The deserted soil can hardly be recovered to its original condition by Nature itself. The man creates the base of coexistence for Nature and the man by changing the soil and planting. G.EW can make it feasible. There are many things inside G.EW. G.EW, located at deserted area, will be assembled small modules of various programs, soil improvement work, planting work, abodes to accommodate environmental refugees, medical facility to assist refugees, cattle shed, CCR to manage total modules, and open space to locate various. Like this earthworm structure, the cuticle, to protect inside, is formed the outside, and two muscles have been designed for vermiculation by hoberman structure. The internal space will be assembled by modular types to adopt volume change. So the internal space can be assembled various ways according to the modular program.

The expansion of green is made through G.EW. On the deserted waste land G.EW will be expanded by continuous movement though slow. The G.EW movement is on the other word creating green, and created green make the earth green, where the man can survive.

Extension Logic The expansion system is an original characteristic of Nature. Every factors of Nature enlarges own territory, like plants expanding its branches as growing, river expanding its tributaries, bracken expanding its leaves as growing, etc. These types of expansion can be explained by L-system. The expansion pattern is to be driven from these systems. After selecting target area, the most appropriate pattern of expansion for the target area will be induced. One is to be divided into multiples, and each divided one is to be divided in the same pattern. By this pattern, the expansion like tree branches will be appeared. Various types of expansion will be appeared as per the target areas.

Role of G.EW G.EW performs various roles. G.EW has basic unit, to make a community by assembling it, that can perform the role for living by itself. Also the module will reclaim and convert the soil of deserted land to soil for growing plants. Through this process the module can plant plants on the improved soil. As the cattle, the main cause of over graze, is included in the module, G.EW can be a self-sufficient system, and by expansion and assembling of G.EW the green and human community has been created.

llll Movement [ 움직임 ] Earthworms use their muscles to extend their bodies when moving forward. Once they extend, they extend tiny hairlike structures known as setae from inside their bodies down into the soil. These setae act as an anchor so that the worms can then pull the rear part of their bodies forward. Once the back part of the body has been advanced, earthworms retract the setae from the front of their bodies and insert other setae positioned in the rear of their bodies. This allows them to anchor once more, this time pushing their front halves forward again.

llll Structure for Movement of G.EW : Hoberman Structure [ 꾏쥰 ] A Hoberman sphere is a structure invented by Chuck Hoberman that resembles a geodesic dome, but is capable of folding down to a fraction of its normal size by the scissor-like action of its joints. Colorful plastic versions have become popular as a child’s toy: several toy sizes exist, with the original design capable of expanding from 15 cm (6 inches) in diameter to 76 cm (30 inches). A Hoberman sphere is not a true sphere, but a polyhedron known as an icosidodecahedron. The Hoberman sphere can be unfolded by allowing certain members to spread apart. This can be accomplished by feeding out a string or cable in the larger models. The operation of each joint is linked to all the others in a manner conceptually similar to the extension arm on a wall-mounted shaving mirror.

llll Process of Peristalsis The Hoberman structure is an unfolding structure composed of interlocking pieces. This allows the entire structure to expand and contract while maintaining its shape. Despite being called the Hoberman Structure, the structure is actually a shape called an icosadodecahedron. An icosadodecahedron consists of 20 triangles and 12 pentagons.

llll Intro [ 배경 ] The annual average temperature of Earth has been periodically changed up and down within the range of 1.5oC with the cycle of 4~500 years. During the period of the 15’th to 19’th century the temperature has been relatively lower, and since the 20’th century the temperature has been gradually increased. Especially it is Africa, directly damaged by Global Warming. The desertification has mainly been appearedon Sahel region, south of Sahara desert in Africa, Chile in South America, North America, Asia and Australia, and so far 19% of total land area, 30 million km² is now regarded as desert region, and is the risk to mankind survival. Especially the Sahel region in Africa has been directly influenced by this desertification. Sahel region is located in thw southern region of Sahara desert withdistance of 190 ~ 290 km by north to south, east from Sudan, Ethiopia, west to Senegal, Mali, Mauritania, Niger. The recent drought, the largest one during last 60 years, has made an intense shortage of rainfall in Sahel region and East African region, Ethiopia, Somalia and Kenya, created over 10 million refugees so far, and over 2 million children are suffering from malnutrition. Though there are so many people living in Africa, the specific characters are insufficient natural resources in many areas and no technology to overcome this weak point. So the deforestation, impractical expansion of farmland and nomad have been done, but practically these are the main reasons of accelerating desertification and difficulties of their life. These Africans, lost their base of life by drought and famine, have become environmental refugee, to secure daily food for living, and under international aid program.

llll Concept [ ę°œë…? ] The climate change has been caused by the Global Warming, and it is rapidlyspread tothe desertification. Above all the recent drought in Africa is accelerating desertification of arid region. The target of this project is to make rainfall to the arid region, under way of desertification, and to grow plants by supplying water. Restore the base of living for Africans, environmental refugee currently, and let them back to their original life, growing crops and grazing cattle. Solve the fundamental factors of Global Warming by expansion of forest resource, presently decreasing, through fertilizing land by supplying water.

Construct a Mega-structure with a slope to respond the wind direction of land under desrtification.

To support Mega-structure construct supporting space in both front and back side.

Construct main structure to hold slope.

Build the slope surface to induce water vapor to the ground. Construct the substructure to support slope surface.


1. Waste land of African region by drought and desertification. Build a massive GBA to induce ascending air current to make rainfall.

2. As ascending air current through the structure surface,the air temperature is decreasing, and condensing water vapor.

3. Condensed water vapor become rain drops, and flow through the structure surface, and create massive water. This massive water makes a water pond in front of the structure, and this water periodically flows to the backside of the structure.

llll Self-Power Generation Systems (시스템) Eco system to produce energy is necessary to prevent the deforestationfor energy source and becoming waste land. By GBA self-sufficient energy system the required energy can be provided to Africans without destroying environment. Solar system The Building Integrated Photovoltaic (BIPV) system on the surface of GBA structure converts Solar energy to electricity. The strong African Solar light would be useful for Solar power system, and the BIPV system, located at higher altitude, could generated electricity more efficiently. Farm Secure agricultural land by reclamation of ruined land, such as destroyed eco-system, eroded soil, sedimentation of sand, and deteriorated soil, by desertification. Give vitality to the ruined soil by supplying water, and growing plants there. By the crops from this secured agricultural land, solve the food crisis of Africans as well the Global food crisis. llll Intro [ 배경 ] Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and the most populous city in Australia. It is located in south-east coast on the Tasman Sea. The greater metropolitan area had an approximate population of 4.6 million people. The city is built on hills surrounding Port Jackson which commonly known as Sydney Harbour, where the iconic Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge feature prominently. The hinterland of the metropolitan area is surrounded by national parks, and the coastal regions feature many bays, rivers, inlets and beaches including the famous Bondi Beach. Bondi Beach is a popular leisure beach and is also the name of the surrounding suburb. Bondi Beach is located 7km(4miles) east of the Sydney central business district. “Bondi” or “Boondi” is an Aboriginal word meaning water breaking over rocks or noise of water breaking over rocks. The Beach is about 1km(0.62miles)long and receives many visitors throughout the year. The south end of the beach is generally reserved for surfboard riding. Yellow and red flags define safe swimming areas, with visitors advised to swim between them for safely reasons.

llll Concept [ 개념 ] The Western and Southern coast of the planned site is Ray O’Keefe reserve. It is a rocky reservation made by the wave of ocean. Just above this gorgeous natural scenery, the building is to be located. Therefore the Earth Container will be concealed, as to invisible. The burying design utilizing the sloped terrain can maximize the invisibility of the building. As the (earth) container is buried in the ground, not like a single structure, the inside environment (temperature, moisture) can be insulated and maintained by the soil surrounded. Also the roof afforestation can prevent the heating up the container by solar energy and the convection of air convection, which may increase the inside temperature. Like this, the (earth) container, immersed in the earth, can provide the best condition, that human can take comfortable and easy rest. The container buried in the ground would give several advantages. The first one is the cost saving effect by its structure. As of the strong structure and durability of the container, it can stand against the soil pressure without special support. Second, the container is made by steel, which the specific heat is relatively low. So it can easily be heated, and the solar ray of Sydney is very strong. Furthermore, as it is facing the sea, corrosion by the salt in the air would be a potential problem. But these problems can be solved as it is to be buried in the ground. Third, by synchronized with the terrain it can give only some limited influence to the natural scenery of Ray O’Keefe reserve. As Ray O’Keefe reserve has been created by sea, it has kept the morphological beauty by eroded rocks. To cope with this positional characteristic, by forming a nature like cave structure over Ray O’Keefe reserve, it would be design harmony with the nature.

llll Intro [ 배경 ] For many generations, the Northern Lights were one of nature’s greatest mysteries. Why did the sky turn green and yellow and purple in various regions of the earth, at specific times of the year, while other places, other skies, remained entirely unchanged? There have been numerous theories to explain this phenomenon, including the simple theory that the gods were responsible. More complicated theories included two holes, one in the north pole, one in the south pole, that shot light out from the center of the earth; yet another theory suggested a great war amongst the planets and the stars, being fought between legendary warriors that had earned their place in the night sky as a posthumous reward for courage and valor in their earthly battles. Our explanation has changed over time. It is believed in our modern era that the Northern Lights are caused by a chemical reaction between solar winds, oxygen, and nitrogen that gets set off at very low temperatures. But even with a hard-tested, scientific explanation for the Northern Lights, the phenomenon doesn’t amaze us any less. Flocks of people still congregate around the Northern Lights to experience their mystery firsthand, to witness the miracle of nature, if only for a few nights, to breathe in the magical effect of the Northern Lights, to absorb the power and mystique that has drawn Man’s attention from their first blazing incarnation in the arctic sky.

llll Concept [ 개념 ] Some day night, with cool anima of mid-night, Aurora jumps sparklingly, breaking through dawn cloud, with vibrant appearance. The impression of day break, glory of brightness and the brilliance of lightening a new day have been expressed in an appropriate way. Aurora, representing the goddess of dawn, as the first pure light, represents ‘hope’ and ‘potential’. The place where one can meet the goddess of dawn. The point where the man and Mother Nature can get together. G.O.B is the place that can give new experience to the man. It is assumed that the ground is the territory for the man, and the sky is for Aurora (God). So the space between two is assumed the place to meet each other, and is the starting point. The Mass, considering the contour of forest of Mother Nature, has been arranged along the contour line. Through mass, moderately climbing to the sky, against to the contour of the ground, the encounter between the man and Aurora, supernatural phenomenon, has been attempted. Through the program, properly arranged according to the mass type, one can be closer step by step to Aurora by every moment of climbing to the sky. Also the approach to the center of mass can lead one to peaceful and comfortable way, like worm human heart. Through G.O.B one can have a new and special experience, get rid of general daily experience.

llll Component diagram_program & circulation The mass type proposes two moving paths, a path to peaceful and comfortable place and a path to mysterious and raptured experience. So the program has been placed spirally around the atrium as the center. From the entrance the upward is the way led to exhibition room, restaurant and observation deck, and downward is the way led to hotel, spa and rest room. The ramp located at the center of atrium creates the central moving path that bands all facilities.

The Green Revolution, contributed to solve the food shortage of mankind in the 20th century, is facing a crisis. The mankind, being forgotten ‘hunger’ by rapid enhancement of agricultural productivity in 1970s, is now experiencing soaring food prices in about 30 years as of the stagnant production caused by the climate change and increasing demand for agricultural products due to the population growth. While the voice of introspection to ‘20’th century Agricultural’ is getting higher against the ecological destruction caused by the abuse of chemical fertilizer and agricultural medicines, the ‘New Green Revolution’ movement is being activated in every spot of the world. Diversified environmental problems are brought about in Seoul, due to the shortage of self-sufficient of food in town area and the increase of polluted sewage, exceeding the natural purification level, caused by rapid urbanization and increase of population. The target area, the old downtown in the vicinity of Cheonggyecheon, Seoul, had been utilized rapidly with high construction density because of the rapid development in the course of urbanization and industrialization. The Cheonggyecheon, close to the target area, has been covered as of the reasons. The restoration work of covered Cheonggyecheon was completed in 2005, but it has lost the autogenous power and all its operation is dependent on the artificially by supplied power. Too much energy is being consumed to resemble the nature.

llll Concept [ 개념 ] It is considered to utilize the underground sewage pipeline and sewage water of the vicinity of target area as a measure to secure the food self-sufficiency and autogenous power of the urban environment of Seoul. It is planned, to maximize the food production, to utilize the high density vertical farm as of the cultivation environment and the organic/mineral nutrition contained in the waste water, and also aimed to help the city’s water circulation and sewage purification for the city to have autogenous power by itself in the natural environment by discharging purified water to the Cheonggyecheon through the vertical farm and botanical garden.

Nutrients—primarily nitrogen and phosphorus—are essential for the growth of all living organisms. However, excessive nitrogen and phosphorus degrade the urban water quality. In this situation, vertical farm can be the biggest solution of water pollution. Vertical farm offers low-cost alternative technology for sewage purification. The removal of Nitrogen is achieved through nitrification / denitrification, volatilisation of Ammonia (NH3) storage in detritus and sediment, and uptake by plants and storage in plant biomass (Brix, 1993). A majority of Nitrogen removal occurs through either plant uptake or denitrification. In this process, specific bacteria, called polyphosphate accumulating organisms (PAOs), are selectively enriched and accumulate large quantities of phosphorus within their cells (up to 20 percent of their mass). When the biomass enriched in these bacteria is separated from the treated water, these biosolids have a high fertilizer value. These fertilizer were used for botanical garden. And clean water, removed Nitrogen and Phosphorus through vertical farm, flows to cheonggye stream.

llll Mass Design [ 형태계획 ] The sewage pipes in the vicinity of target area are gathered together in the ‘UPG’. The gathered sewage water moves to the upper level through vertical pipe. Also, the pipes, bent according to the necessity in the process for moving up to the ground, constitute the Hanging Garden for the citizen. The sewage water moves through the pipeline containing the nutrition, and the nutrition is getting concentrated as it moves upward. The concentrated nutrition is to be the nourishment of the plants, while moving downward, and the water is being purified by the removal of the nutrition from the water. The water, after the second step purification in the upper layer, is supplied to the Slab through SPT (Slope Pipe Truss). Then, the SPT (Slope Pipe Truss) plays the role of a delta, expressed as the accumulation of nutrition contained in the water, which provides plants the base for them to grow up. The downstream water, purified through the vertical farm and botanical garden, is discharged naturally into the Cheonggyecheon. The form of mass has been constituted through the circulation of water and structure of pipeline. Step.2 Collected sewage water is transferred to the upper level through vertical pipeline.

Step.1 The sewage water in the vicinity of Cheonggyecheon is collected into the tank of target area, instead of the purification facility, then the first step sediment purification is carried out.

Step.3 Second step sediment purification is carried out in the top level.

Step.4 The purified water supplies nutrition (phosphor and nitrogen) to the plants in the vertical farm through STP (Slope Pipe Truss), which is the 3rd step purification.

Step.5 The purified water is supplied to the botanical garden in the lower level through SPT (Slope Pipe Truss) again, which is the 4th step purification, natural purification.

Step.6 This purified water is to be discharged to the Cheonggyecheon for flowing into the Han River.

Structure.3 The pipes in lower level are transformed to form and support the slab to constitute diversified botanical gardens.

Structure.4 The pipes are gathered to the center of mass in the top level. The gathered pipes form the internal SPT (Slope Pipe Truss) to support the slab.

Structure.5 The pipes leaning downward naturally, like the flow of water, constitute the SPT (Slope Pipe Truss) and slab, which is naturally heading to the Cheonggyecheon.

Structure.6 ‘UPG’ is constituted with the pipe structure, and the pipe is taking the role of a structure as well as a pipeline to move the water.

llll Programs and Systems [ 내부 용도와 시스템 ] There is a huge ascending airflow inside skyscraper buildings because of the pressure difference between inside and outside the building. The aero generator, located on top of the ‘UPG’, is rotating the large turbine, to generate electricity, using the ascending airflow inside the building and strong wind outside the skyscraper. The water tank located on the top of ‘UPG’ performs two roles substantially. First, it plays the role of the 2nd step purification of sewage water in the sewage pipe flowing up from the underground by utilizing the sedimentation effect. Second, it collects the rain water and to use it as medium quality water, and gives more efficient purification of the sewage water.

The triangular slope façade of ‘UPG’ has been contrived to receive as much solar beam as possible. The dosage of solar beam has been surveyed after comparing the solar altitude of Summer and Winter period in Seoul, and after calculating the average of dosed solar beam, then three different shapes of solar panel have been mounted in accordance with the density. The energy obtained in the solar panels is to be consistently condensed, so that ‘UPG’ can be independent in electric energy.

PA system is the automation of waterculture to grow and harvest plants in the modified pipes. Sewage water is transferred to the slab through vertical pipeline after first step purification, and this transferred water is used for the waterculture of plants through the PAC pipe. The plants grown up in this way is harvested, and planted again by the robots in the pipe on the real-time basis. The cultivated crops are moved to the core through the conveyor belt, and the consumers can receive fresh crops occasionally on the locations appointed.

PAC system is the unit of basic modules for the PA system. Each crop is growing up in the waterculture farm in the PAC pipe. The crops planted and put in the pot can conduct the photosynthesis using the artificial LED illumination from the electrical energy obtained through solar generation and wind power generation, which provides the environment for 16 harvests rather than the twice or triple harvests in a year. The planting and harvesting of crops can be carried out automatically by using the PAC system.

The water purified through the vertical farm and botanical garden is discharged into the Cheonggyecheon. It is not operating the Cheonggyecheon by using the water from the Han River, the existing method, but returning the naturally purification sewage water, that we have used, into the Han River through the Cheonggyecheon.

The sewage water, collected from the vicinity, has been taken inundation process for simple purification in the tank. This sewage water is transferred to the top level using the energy obtained through the solar generation and wind power generation. Also in the underground, the electricity consumption can be minimized by using the geothermal energy.

llll Vision ‘UPG’ prevents the environmental problem of discharging contaminated sewage water as well as enhancing the self-sufficiency of food for the citizen. This will to be an essential element of a rational and ideal city by reducing the waste of energy caused by existing abnormal water circulation loop of the Cheonggyecheon and helping the natural circulation of water in the whole city. In addition, the self-sufficiency level of food in Seoul will be increased, owing to the crops produced in ‘UPG’, and Seoul may be an exceptional city free from the food shortage in the world.

Botanical gardens are located both inside and outside. The garden inside is operated with the purified water supplied through SPT (Slope Pipe Truss). The garden outside uses domestic sewage water supplied directly from the underground collecting tank, and forms with the swamp and aqua space to show the natural purification process and the shape of external unban forest. The reference plan has been constituted with the forms of higher level and lower level. The lower level is formed with the swamp and botanical garden, of which space can be utilized variously as there are bridges connecting to the slabs from the core. The plan of vertical farm in the upper level is constituted with the crop cultivating space and the radial conveyor belt carrying the harvested crops, and the transferred crops are moved to the core to be supplied to consumer. llll Intro [ 배경 ] Outer London boroughs could use green spaces such as parks and playing fields to help reduce flooding risk in the capital, the London Assembly heard yesterday. The Assembly’s Environment Committee is currently investigating river and surface water flooding in London; it is estimated that in the capital around 100,000 properties are at risk from river flooding and up to 680,000 at risk from surface water flooding. Robert Oates, of the Thames Rivers Restoration Trust, told the Committee that small tributaries buried underground or diverted through concrete channels could be broken out and redesigned so they use existing green spaces as flood plains, keeping water away from homes and buildings. He said almost every single outer London borough has the potential to use open areas such as parks and school playing fields in this way and it could be more cost-effective than trying to restore ageing concrete systems. Nick Starling, of the Association of British Insurers, added that if similar storms hit London he would expect the cost to be considerably greater than the £3 billion cost of the 2007 floods. ”Using green spaces to restore flood plains is an innovative solution to this problem and may in the long run be more cost effective than building higher and higher concrete walls. As part of the investigation, members of the Environment Committee recently visited two river restoration projects, the River Quaggy at Sutcliffe Park in Greenwich and Cornmill Gardens in Lewisham. Current studies reports that approximately 100,000 buildings are exposed in danger from the flood resulted from rivers, and 680,000 buildings are exposed in danger from the flood resulted from surface water. This is directly connected to the global warming raising the sea level.The sea water flowing into rivers are increased as the sea level rises and it affects the drainage of water. With storms and localized heavy rain overflow of rivers are what we should be worried about. We must use the green space to prevent and avoid overflow of rivers. Through this green space we must secure the area to preserve water and defend buildings and houses from getting damaged by the flood. The soil and plants absorbs and saves water so it’s a good prevention of overflow. Disregarding this natural defense mechanic we build a lot of dams. Ironically we Human disabled the ability of natural prevention of flood by covering up the natural site and then destroy the forest to control the flood. We are trying to increase the revegetation ratio to control water. Remove the concrete and asphalt from the city for the ground to absorb water. And allow the citizens to plant and harvest their own plants. British loves gardening but, a lot of people can’t participate because of the limited personal space in the city. The British love towards gardening is combined with city agriculture with the purpose of harvesting. From the futuristic view we have thought about a vertical farm; a vertical farm that could provide us with sufficient amount of green space, food, and natural experience.

llll Concept _ Conceptual Mass Process [ 형태계획 ] We removed the waterproof asphalt from the asphalt covered land. The site finding its original shape now breathes air and absorbs water. Plants start growing and soon the site is full of greenness. Trees start growing high from the ground. This is a reward to the skyline around the area. The green space grows bigger without affecting the original view. Within the increased nature site a wetland is formed to preserve water. And now human and plants live together on top of trees fulfilling each other’s needs.

2. Hammock (Housing area)

The structure is composed of 3 main mega structures supporting and acting as the core of the building and substructure that supplies water into farming areas. There are rails inside the megastructure and the different breeds of plants are elevated to the ground level and upper floors by these rails. These plants are sorted and moved by their different growth cycles. At the upper level the plants are harvested. Also the cultivated plants are connected to the substructure and sorted and grown in different levels by their nature. The role of the structure, circulation of water, and transportation, harvest of plants all together are called “Farm structure system”.

When main structure meets sub structure residence begins. Residence is decided in 3 modules. We applied 3 different modules to accommodate nuclear families, singles made up by social reasons. Especially each residential space is connected to farms to apply self sufficiency from the agricultural society from the past. We are trying to supply green space to the residents not just for views but to experience nature. If the formal vertical farms in the city were isolated from humans, the new vertical farms connect these two different functions building a new residence inside the city.

Farms are sorted in three different parts based on their functions. Self sufficient plant growing part combined with residential life, cultivation of plant part, and the experience of green space part. The first two parts are focused on cultivating actual plants. The third part is opened not just for local residents but to everyone so they can experience the green space.

We need a greenhouse for the four season growing condition which is one of the pros of the vertical farm. We have applied a skin that surrounds the mass for a better environment inside the greenhouse. Also we have applied a double skin to control the temperature and prevent overheat from the greenhouse effect. There is a fabric called ramie fabric. This fabric’s feature is fast absorption and good ventilation. We will use this fabric between the double skin, pile a ramie fabric mesh so the building itself can breath air.

PAC system starts at the underground auto-cultivation room. Many different kinds of plants are planted inside their own different pots. The plant pots are sorted in rails by their breeds.

Bring in the black water from the Thames River. Go through 2 different levels of purification. The filtered water is preserved underground. The preserved water underground is used as agricultural and residential purposes. Rain is preserved at the upper level repository used as agricultural water. The water filtered by plants once again flows into the underground repository and gets supplied to the wet lands on ground level filtering itself. Then the filtered water flows back to the Thames River. This is the filtering and circulation of water.

llll Vision V.A.W.A is now the idol of city agriculture. We use the small area inside the city to advance agriculture (agricultural technology). Also it plays an important role in solving the pollution inside the city. The green space is increased and now it can add greenness to the beautiful city view. The modern citizens who were once departed from nature can now once again live nature throughout the vertical farms inside the city.

llll Program Residence and public farming area composed of 3 different masses are not independent from the city but becomes an urban amenity facility inside London. The vertical space structure is divided into city agriculture, resident area, and community. It is to maximize the efficiency of the limited land in London. The upper level applies the mesh sub structure to provide wide area, and experience of city agriculture to visitors. This area full of sunlight is where the visitors participate in agricultural life and learn how to have a symbiotic relationship with nature. Fresh green sprouts are shot up every day at the edge of the public farms and residence corridors. With the sufficient amount of natural sunlight and LED lighting plans these plants grow healthy with no worries of disease and insects. City agriculture within this area isn’t agriculture as labor. It’s an enjoyable everyday modern life planting experience which anyone can enjoy. This is where people share their everyday life and advance their modern city life in to a whole different level.

llll Intro [ 소개 ] MUNRAE-dong, Two different culture coexists. Currently, Munraedong area in South Korea promotes a project aimed at activating the local community in collaboration with artists and writers residing in the Munrae Art Complex. In Munrae Art complex, Artists entered a few places that Iron workers have lived more than 20 years. Even though the artists and Ironworkers reside together in that place, but they communicates very passive.

How do they live together? On ground level, there are Iron worker’s places widely. The artists embed their paintings and works Iron worker’s places when Iron workers didn’t do their work. They sprout edible green plants and share their foods by having barbeque party. At the moment, they think each other than feel sympathy. Frankly speaking, but It’s not enough.

We are going to draw a few lines by following an axis of lost space We’d like to draw a few lines connecting ground to building floor level. Furthermore, we are going to make some places which are not used. For example, rubbish dumping places which are piled mass up that are located partially through entire Munrae art complex. And also we planned to install the bridges through upper sides voids of steel frame structures.

llll Intro [ 배경 ] Most spaces for the performing arts (drama, music theatre, dance, concerts and other forms) are housed in specialized buildings, built for the purpose. While there will always be a need for these buildings, there is increasing interest amongst theatre practitioners in the use of existing buildings and settings, which are not purpose built theatres, to present productions. These settings, sometimes known as ‘found space’, can often provide a unique atmosphere, which resonates with a particular production or style of presentation, in a way that may not be possible in a conventional theatre. While these spaces may lack the technical infrastructure and facilities of a theatre, they can make up for this through the atmosphere provided by the special character of the place, its interaction with the performance and the opportunity to explore less conventional forms of presentation. Many new theatres are also created by converting existing buildings, where the character of the original building contributes significantly to the special atmosphere, and provides a sense of continuity with the past.

llll Intro [ 배경 ] The only divided country in the world, Korean Peninsula confronting with two countries of the same race. South and North Koreas entered into the local armistice by the Armistice Agreement contracted on Jul 27, 1953 to cease the Korean War, which had lasted for not short period of 3 years and 1 month since its outbreak on Jun 25, 1950, and the demilitarized zone (DMZ) and military demarcation line (MDL) had been installed between the two Koreas. DMZ is the area of 2km distance south and north respectively from the MDL. It requires the permission of the military armistice commission (MAC) to enter the DMZ, and the joint security area (JSA), where the MAC and the neutral nation’s supervisory commission (NNSC) are located together, is called Panmunjeom. South and North Koreas, originally same race, could not overcome the difference of ideologies, though long period of 60 years has been elapsed, and people are merely looking at each other through the MDL and DMZ, dividing each other, without touc ingtogether. It is just 60 minute walking distance, but we still take firearms aiming at

each other without thinking how to approach to each other. DMZ has been maintained free from anyone’s footstep for over 40 years, with such a painful historic background, so it is pointed as an academic object for the ecology researches because its natural status has been preserved very well. This DMZ area, where has been devastated innumerably once due to the outbreak of war, has now become the space for new lives living together after having overcome those pains. Accordingly, DMZ is regarded as a space with full of hope in which South and North Koreas can get one step closer over the pain in the past, like the hope of Pandora’s Box that has been left over unexpectedly.

TRANSFORMING CONNECTING North The two towers are going to be a peace bridge to connect South and North Korea at the moment of unification.

South The peace bridge is designed for the transportation of vehicle and goods as well as for connecting South and North Koreas on foot.

The R.S.S, on which each was merely able to watch the other, is now connected over DMZ and transformed to the place for both South and North Koreans viewing the nature that has preserved the ecology as it is.

llll Concept [ 개념 ] A lot of people in South Korea are watching North Korea on the tower. We watch North Korea on the tower in earnest eagerness yearning after each other, even though the purpose or reason for visiting the tower may be different for each person, who had left own hometown, departed from the family, or who wishes to watch the historic site in person, and so on. R.S.S can hold their desires plentifully, if such towers are built up in both South Korea and North Korea, if only each can look at the other, and if the yearning minds can meet together in the moment the unification, their cherished desire, can be realized. Berlin Wall, the symbol of cold war and divided Germany. R.S.S will open the sluice gate for unification, like the Brandenburg Gate of Berlin Wall, by connecting each other in DMZ that has divided the South and North. Towers are installed in South Korea and North Korea on which each can watch the other. On the tower, each can watch the other farther on the higher place in the ordi-

nary time before unification. The two towers are going to be a peace bridge to connect South and North Korea at the moment of unification. The peace bridge is designed for the transportation of vehicle and goods as well as for connecting South and North Koreas on foot. R.S.S cannot be connected one way by one country, either South Korea or North Korea, which can be connected when each understands the other to become one. It is the symbol of peace as well as reconciliation. We will leap up toward the hope through the R.S.S’s allocated in both South and North, like advancing forward hands-in-hands.

V-H module The R.S.S space is changed as it changes from vertical to horizontal. This change of space can be solved by internal module-type structure. The space of each sub-module can be reallocated and reconstituted freely, therefore, when the vertical space is transformed to horizontal space. We call it V-H module, which can be adopted in all spaces of the tower, and it can change the vertical spaces into diversified horizontal spaces

The vertical cores that had penetrated about 2,000m high R.S.S’s just for watching each other before unification are connected horizontally, after unification, to change its feature as a sky-walk for the people in South and North Koreas approaching to each other without damaging the nature of DMZ.

R.S.S has the combined features of bascule bridge and suspension bridge. B-cable is used to reduce the burden of load when the top tower is rotating based on the B-shaft. Suspension system is consisted with the cable, anchor, which leads the cable tension to the ground, and R.S.S Pylon. Suspension system will reinforce its strength when R.S.S is connecting the South and North after the unification of the South and North.

R.S.S has the combined features of bascule bridge and suspension bridge. So, the vertical mass must be transformed into horizontal form by rotating the top of tower centering the pivot, which is 200m high from the ground. The rotation axis is necessary to support the pivot. The tower on top of B-shaft in this rotation shaft is rotating naturally to act as a bridge. The design should be big and strong enough to rotate the huge mass without problem.

llll Program [ 용도계획 ] The program of R.S.S after unification will be changed differently from that of before unification. It is because the characteristics of the space are changing in accordance with the transformation of R.S.S. The basic function of R.S.S in the form of vertical skyscraper before unification is an observatory where South and North can watch each other with various additional programs of hotel, office, government office, military facility, museum, and so on. As R.S.S is transformed to the horizontal bridge connecting South and North after unification, the functions are changed into the meeting space for separated families in the

South and North, R&D facility to study the nature of DMZ, road for smooth logistics after connecting broken roads, commercial facility to lead the local development after forming the commercial zone, and so on. In addition, the vertical cores that had penetrated about 2,000m high R.S.S’s just for watching each other before unification are connected horizontally, after unification, to change its feature as a sky-walk for the people in South and North Koreas approaching to each other without damaging the nature of DMZ.

R.S.S for the harmony connecting South Korea and North Korea. R.S.S plays important roles more than connecting South and North Koreas, now, when unification has been realized. R.S.S is providing a wide ground to overcome the gap in the culture and living styles built up during the past 60 years of separation in two countries without any hindrance. It is also contributing to the meeting of separate families, who had to be departed with each other, by connecting South and North in the neutral location that is biased to neither South nor North. The R.S.S, designed to use immediately after unification, enables swift exchange of goods between the countries and regions by shortening the time and reducing the expenses to construct a new infrastructure for connecting South and North. Such expansion of exchanges will not only enhance the industry but also bring in bigger and faster spread effectiveness to contribute to the accomplishment of economic development in the Korean Peninsula overall R.S.S provides the environment, additionally, to research DMZ, which has the historic symbolism together with well-preserved ecological resources, at the closest point without damaging the DMZ. It has consummated as a landmark, for the foreign visitors, in the sense that they can experience the meaningful space dramatically in Korean Peninsula, which had been the last cold war countries. Being unified now beyond the hard and dark 60 years in the past, R.S.S is providing the direction that the South and North are stepping forward communicating with each other afterwards hands-in-hands.

llll Concept [ 개념 ] Ballet is a type of dance, being developed in Europe, and only emphasizing pure the body movement and line of acting without using other tools. The moment of motion from ballerina’s spin motion were captured to set motion steps. The stepwise location of hand, foot and eyeline were connected and expressed in curve, then visualized. The motion of ballerina is formed a pattern with the arms and legs stretching out from the core of body and returning back. The eyes are staring at front side or move two-dimensionally up and down followed the fingertips and foot toe, then move up and downward gazing at the top and bottom. When expressing the continuous curves around the core, made by hands, feet, and eyes, therefore, it can be a lot of three-dimensional incomplete and atypical circles. It forms various curves around the core of human body with the shape of petals of beautiful flower.

llll Architecturalization (건축화 과정) The work was carried out to extract curves from the ballerina’s body movement “Flower” through her motions and to construct the space with such curves. It has been designed to make the internal space maintaining the curved surface consisted with the existing curves. The curved surface is transformed into the roof and walls, and extended outward from inside to form diversified spaces.

The motion of ballerina’s body has been analyzed and expressed by lines and surfaces through the BodyMovement. It is intended to transform such curves and curved surfaces to elements of the building by achitecturalization. The design concept of this house is to feel the curves from walls, roof, and internal space. It contains such a concept in curved walls, roof, and deck. The 1st floor was planned for the guest room and parlor for guests, and the 2nd floor was prepared for the owner’s private space, when designing the vacation house for ballerinas to relax in it. The basement was designed to inflow of outside light through the front terrace. The yard has been designed to feel like a playground as curved wall falls down to the ground.

llll Intro [ 배경 ] In Itaewon, on the mountain base viewing the Mt. Namsan and Seoul Tower, people of various cultures and nationalities are living together along the narrow allies sharing different daily lives and cultures of each other. A children care center is an important nest to children, showing us the far future, as like human beings make environment and the environment makes human beings. The nursery house in Itaewon must provide warm environmental space with beneficial educations and various cultures, which should be planned to support the stable living through reliable childcare environment.

llll Internal Space Design Concept [ 내부공간 디자인 개념 ] The internal space has been planned with the infant’s human scale following the growth stages of the children. The 1-2 year old babies who are not accustomed with walking are living in the childcare room on the 1st floor, and the 3 year old children are living in the childcare room on the 2nd floor. The 2nd floor was designed with the playground on the balcony toward north (in the direction of Mt. Namsan and Seoul Tower) for seeing views. The 2nd floor and 3rd floor were designed with gable roofs so that light can inflow through ceilings here and there.

llll Mass Design Concept [ 외형 디자인 개념 ] The Itaewon Children Care Center(CCC) has been planned in the shape of pastoral house in our thought. There are wide garden and playground inside over the house. And the children care center was stressed with the image of house by means of the warm bricks and zinc roof. The Itaewon children care center will take its place as a cultural space for the children in Itaewon where many multi-cultural families are dwelling.

llll Concept [ 설계방향 ] Seongdong Fire Station is located in the Public Facility Block #2 of Haengdang Town Development District, facing Han River in south, Mt. Achasan in northeast, and Mt. Namsan in west. The planned site is in the blind area out of the disaster safety where is farther than 5 minutes driving distance from the nearby fire stations. It should be planned to harmonize with the local community as well as fully demonstrating the own functions of fire station.

llll Planning and Circulation [ 배치와 출동동선 ] The disaster response team is allocated on the 1st and 2nd floors for prompt response and moving-out against any situation. In the relaxing space, the rooftop garden on 3rd floor, a staircase has been designed for the immediate emergency moving-out. And the fire vehicle garage has been arranged in the nearest location as possible, which has been separated from the outsider’s moving lines to lift up the efficiency and swiftness of the moving-out line. The fire vehicle garage has been connected to the back yard to enable the fire drills. It has been planned for the split moving-out more efficiently by allocating the fire vehicle and administrative vehicles separately according to the moving-out priority to the disaster area.

llll Office & Convenient Facility[ 사무실 및 직원편의시설 ] The 4th floor is a space for the fire analysis, fire administration, and disaster control. It has been planned for the synthesized work management, report, and efficient instructions as a space to process overall fire administration and disaster control. The relaxing space has been secured sufficiently with installing the lounge and deck that can be used mostly by the indoor staff. Also, the auditorium and rooftop garden have been provided on the 6th floor as a space for processing the various events, indoor sports activities, and so on.

A lot of effort has been paid to allocate of garage for smooth movingout of fire vehicles, when designing the Seongdong Fire Station. Also, the location of disaster response facility and situation room was considered with first priority for immediate input of firemen for prompt moving-out. The fire station has been planned to shorten the moving-out time in order to extinguish fire in Seoul with heavy traffics. In addition, a lot of heart and soul have been devoted to internal welfare facilities in the fire station by providing rooftop garden and lounge for the convenience of the firemen.

The garage building and yard has been considered with priority for the promptness of firefighting activities according to the function and work characteristics of fire station. It has been placed close to the garage considering the vehicle moving lines of fire vehicles and ordinary vehicles respectively and the walking lines of the residents who are using the Prevention Dept. (Public Service Center) and annex facility. A static relaxing space (inner-court) for mental and physical refreshment of firemen, who are exposed to accumulated fatigue and stress, has been designed, and diverse exterior spaces have been planned for the maintenance of fire equipment and physical exercise. It has expressed the accessibility, public nature, convenience, and the fire station’s symbolism and functions to the local community by planning the inner-court type complex allocation for the function of this program and efficient link and utilization of the land.

A fire station has been planned in Gangleung to realize the moving and arriving within 5 minutes. In the site, a fire road is planned to access the national route #7. The fire station plan has been carried out for moving out into the downtown Gangleung within shortest time considering the road traffic. The most important point is the allocation of vehicle moving lines and buildings for immediate moving-out of fire vehicles out of the station. In addition, it is also important to improve the internal environment of fire station for firemen.

Though the construction of Observatory tower in Korea has been rapidly increased since year 2000, the basic data and precedent studies about Observatory tower are not sufficient and the definition of it is not clearly defined. Thus there is a need of the basic data based on actual condition investigation and its analysis. This is the purpose of this study. Among 52 Towershaped Observatories in Korea, total 23 Tower-shaped Observatories were selected and the items to be considered to construct Observatory tower have been classified by business planning and architectural planning, then sub-classified by constituents of Observatory tower, and the standard of analysis for each classification has been created. According to these standards of analysis, all contents of actual condition investigation have been analyzed by each constituent, thereafter the trend of Korean Observatory tower has been reviewed by its business planning as well as architectural planning through comparison analysis of the constituent analysis results. The results are as follows; First, Observatory tower in Korea has a specific trend of business planning according to its operator. Second, the structural planning and massing planning of Observatory tower has relationship with external formation and height depending on its structure. Third, there is a relationship between the function and massing planning (external formation, height). As above, this study result and data, achieved by the study of actual condition investigation of Observatory tower and its trend analysis, can be utilized as a basic data as well as a guideline for the future.

본 연구는 2000년 이후 국내 타워전망대의 건설이 급격히 증가하고 있지만, 타워전망대에 대한 기초자료와 선 행연구가 미흡하고 정의가 불분명한 상황에서 타워전망대에 대한 현황조사와 분석을 통한 기초자료의 필요성에 서 연구를 시작하게 되었다. 국내 타워형 전망대 52곳 중 23곳을 선정하여 타워전망대 계획 시 고려해야 할 사항 을 사업계획적, 건축계획적으로 분류하고 이를 다시 타워전망대를 구성하는 요소로 소분류 하였으며, 각각의 분 류에 분석기준을 설정하였다. 이러한 분석기준에 따라 현황조사내용을 토대로 각 요소별로 분석하고 이를 비교분 석하여 현재까지의 국내 타워전망대의 사업계획적 경향과 건축계획적 경향을 알아보았다. 현황조사내용을 토대로 각 요소별로 분석하고 이를 비교분석하여 현재까지의 국내 타워전망대의 사업계획적 경 향과 건축계획적 경향을 알아보았다. 그리고 그 결과는 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 국내 타워전망대는 운영자에 따른 특 징적인 사업계획적 경향을 가진다. 둘째, 타워전망대의 구조계획과 형상계획은 구조에 따라서 외적형태와 높이의 관련성을 가진다. 셋째, 타워전망대의 기능과 형상계획(외적형태, 높이)은 관련성을 가진다. 이와 같이 본 연구는 타워전망대 현황조사 연구 및 경향 분석을 통해 얻은 결과와 데이터를 통하여 향후 타워전망대 계획에 있어 기초 자료 및 가이드라인으로서 활용될 것으로 사료된다.
