It’s safe to say that Amateur competitor Meg Pye likes pretty horses. She even owns one that’s “Prettiest Of All.” After showing Hotroddin Ona Harley for five years, earning a National Snaffle Bit Association World Championship and Quarter Horse Congress Reserve Championship in Western Riding and hundreds of American Quarter Horse Association points in all-around events, Pye, spent the later part of 2020 and early 2021 searching for her next perfect show partners. She found two in Dont Think Twice (Marley) and a stunning 2019 bay mare by Allocate Your Assets out of Art I Pretty, aptly named Prettiest Of All. Meg’s longtime coach, Clint Ainsworth had been quietly searching for a tough all-around contender for her since she sold Hotroddin Ona Harley to Robin Hill Sowell of Greenville, South Carolina.

“When I arrived at the NSBA World Show that year (2020), Clint asked me to put my boots on and take a ride with him,” Pye recalled. “I was clueless about where I was going, but even more shocked when I was asked to jump on Marley in the practice pen.”

Pye had admired the 2014 chestnut mare by RL Best Of Sudden and out of KMWeKnowShesBest. Florida trainer Rusty Green started her in Western Pleasure and she had helped Kent Ray Taylor return to the show pen, earning success in Amateur Select All-Around classes while his trainer, Blake Weis, showed her in open events.

“Five minutes into the ride, both Blake and Clint stood smiling in the center of the pen, nodding their head,” Pye said. “Seems we hit it off.”

“Marley is quite spicy and Meg is a really soft, forgiving rider so I always thought they would be a good match,” Ainsworth said. “Once it became clear Marley might be available and we tried her my suspicions were confirmed.”

An agreement was reached for Pye to take ownership after the AQHA World Show in November. Pye said that was a great plan since just days later Marley and Weis won an NSBA World Championship in Trail. By the time she became Marley’s new owner the mare had become a four-time Reserve NSBA World Champion, a Reserve Congress Champion and had logged $35,000 in earnings.

Since then, Pye and Marley have established themselves as a serious threat in Amateur All-Around events. They placed in the top 10 at the 2021 NSBA World Show in Western Riding and Horsemanship. At the Quarter Horse Congress two months later, they placed in the top 10 in Amateur Western Riding and Performance Mares and in the top 15 in Amateur Showmanship. At their very first appearance together at the AQHA World Show that November they earned a top 10 in Horsemanship and were finalists in Amateur Performance Mares.

“Marley and I have only been a team for a year and half, but we’ve put on three superiors in Showmanship, Horsemanship and Halter and she has an Open Superior in Trail, as well as a dozen Open and Amateur All-Around Titles,” Pye said. “She’s the princess, she’s spoiled, and she knows she’s pretty.”

Ainsworth admits Marley has a unique personality.

“She’s really very funny in the barn,” he said. “She will pin her ears as you walk past her stall but then put them right up if you go in to pet her. We like to say it’s a game for her where she wants to be the center of attention all the time.”

Pye admits Marly can be challenging at times but it’s “only because you have to keep up with her,” she said. “I enjoy showing her because she enjoys it. Her ears are always up and happy sometimes too up but she very much loves to show.”

Plans for the rest of the year include competition at the Redbud and Big A AQHA circuits; the NSBA World Show; the Quarter Horse Congress and the AQHA World Show. In addition to Amateur classes with Pye, Marley will compete in Senior Trail with Weis and Senior Western Riding with Ainsworth.

“She (Marley) is incredibly talented in Horsemanship and Trail, as well as in Western Riding, but she is probably one of the nicest Showmanship horses I have ever had in my barn,” Ainsworth said.

That’s a bonus for Pye who says Showmanship is her favorite event.

“Marley is by far one of the best Showmanship horses I’ve had,” she admitted. “She can back for miles, trot fast corners and does it all with her ears up! I have to keep up with her, it’s always my cardio for the day.”

Ainsworth said Marley and Meg have a very special relationship and are becoming a stronger team with every show. His hope is for them to become real contenders in Amateur Trail. He’s been coaching Pye for eight years now and says she’s very easy to work with.

“She’s an excellent student,” he explained.

“She’s on top of it when things are going right and she’s willing to listen and adjust when things don’t go right.”

Another young show contender that has Meg excited about this year’s season is Prettiest Of All (Kate). Tony Bladen had been showing her in Non-Pro Hunter Longe Line classes in 2020 and Gavin Pope was showing her in Open Longe Line.

“Tony had won everything with her that

fall,” Pye said. “If my work schedule allows me to show enough to get qualified for the World Show, I’ll go there.”

Pye said she thinks Prettiest Of All will develop into her next Amateur horse because she has all the qualities she looks for in a show partner. And eventually she would love to raise some babies out of her.

“I would love this mare to make a great show partner for Meg, and go on and produce some great babies,” Miller said.

But until then, Meg has plenty to keep her busy. Over this past winter, she purchased Side Piece (Minnie), a 2021 AQHA/APHA mare by Awesome All Night out of BMQ A Diva Forever from Keith and Sydney Miller. Sydney showed Side Piece to a Reserve Championship in Amateur Longe Line at the 2021 APHA World Show.

“She's a super fancy mare, and is so great-minded,” Miller said. “The plan is for Meg to show her at the APHA World Show and then the 2-Year-Old futurities throughout the summer and fall.”

After working with Pye this long the Millers consider her more like family.

“Meg has always been great to work with, and I truly think it comes down to the fact that we all trust each other so much,” Keith said. “If I call her and tell her something, she always knows to believe me at face value- and vice versa. I never feel like Meg has an agenda, she wants her horses to be well taken care of, prepared well, and enjoy showing them.

She understands that horses aren’t machines, and some s

At the end of the year Bladen sent Kate to North Carolina trainer, Keith Miller to get started under saddle. Miller has worked with Pye over the past 13 years and knew she was on the hunt for her next hunt seat partner. He put the transaction into motion.

“This mare is obviously beautiful, but she can trot and canter so well, which is not always easy to find,” Miller said.

“She has a long, ground-covering trot. And the canter is so balanced and has so much lift up front.”

Prettiest Of All made her debut under saddle at the Championship Show in Ocala last October, where she placed third in the 2-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle with Miller in the irons. Then it was on to the Fun In The Sun Futurity in Venice, Florida, in January where she competed in Junior Hunter Under Saddle with Miller and Pye showed her for the first time as well.

“Both Keith and I won in Venice which has me excited to continue showing her,” Pye said.

At The Sudden Impulse Futurity in Ocala, Florida last month, Miller piloted Prettiest One Yet to a third-place finish in a very competitive Open 3-Year-Old Hunter Under Saddle and she and Pye placed fifth in the 3-Year-Old Limited NonPro Hunter Under Saddle and in the top 10 of the Open division of that class.

days might not go perfectly- but she always trusts the process …. and she is always a breath of fresh air.”

But Miller says Pye is also a fierce competitor.

“Meg’s strength as a rider is definitely her perseverance,” he explained. “She is tenacious and motivated, and is always focused on the big picture – and that’s a great quality in someone.”

On March 26, Meg married Preston Pye in a lavish wedding at the Mansion at Forsyth Park in Savannah, Georgia.

“It’s our favorite local city to visit and we love the southern, historical charm. We hope we were able to show our wedding guests the wonderful vibe Savannah has to offer,” she said.

Preston is currently working toward a doctorate in nursing anesthesia. He starts his clinical rotations mid-May and is about halfway done with the program. Meg earned Bachelor of Science degrees in corporate finance and speech communication from Clarion University and is Regional Vice President for Prudential Financial covering Georgia, Western Carolina and North Florida. She has been with the company for 15 years now.

The couple recently sold their home and bought another in North Augusta, South Carolina, about a mile over the border of Georgia.

While the rigorous curriculum keeps Preston home studying and in class most weeks, he does travel to shows when he’s on break.

“In the years we’ve been together he’s learned a lot,” Meg said. “He’s a very competitive human, so naturally he likes pattern classes most and Trail in particular because he can judge the maneuvers. He doesn’t shy away at telling me what I did wrong, and he can hear me tick a pole from a mile away. His favorite show is the Arizona Sun Circuit, followed by the Congress because of the food.”

When they are not busy building their careers or at a horse show, Meg and Preston enjoy spending time with their friends and family.

“We are foodies, so trying new restaurants is one of our favorite things to do when we travel,” Meg said. “With the amount of food we eat, it’s a good thing we are both gym rats and spend several days a week working out. I also am a huge fan of interior and home design, and of course shopping. I’m very good at that!”

was complete, Campton asked Larry to stay after the class to invite him to go to work for him.

“I took the opportunity with the stipulation that I keep my judging and management commitments through first week of October,” Larry explained.

He immediately hit the road, traveling to a show in Columbus, Ohio.

“After my third day of observing Harold took me to the Reining arena, shot three runs, handed me the camera, flash unit and three rolls of film and told me to bring it back after the class.”

He was on his way. During that first run of horse show circuits, which included the Appaloosa World Show, Quarter Horse Congess and AQHA World Show, Larry got the opportunity to work with many exceptional equine photographers including KC Montgomery, Doug Lehey and Don Shugart.

Life Changes and Industry Developments While fulfilling one of his prior commitments to co-manage the Michigan State Fair, the horse show secretary introduced Larry to Karen Pedersen, a Chicago native who had moved to the Detroit area at 17 years of age. She was at the fair showing her Paso Fino Horses.

“We hit it off and continued to communicate after I went on the road,” Larry explained.

After returning to Florida for the winter following the 1992 show season, Campton encountered some health issues and sent Larry, along with Lehey to shoot the Florida Gold Coast, which included the Florida State Fair.

“Since I had an interest in Paso Finos myself, I took a few shots of them there on my own and sent the proofs to Karen,” Lrry recalled. “She thought the action was good.”

By Easter weekend of the following year, Campton had decided to relocate to Wisconsin and it was Larry’s job to drive the overloaded bus from Ocala to s

ell-known documentary photographer Rodger Kingston once wrote: The camera is the save button for the mind’s eye.”

That’s something Larry Williams knows a thing or two about. As a professional equine photographer noted for his ability to accentuate the beauty of each horse he captured on film at farm calls as well as action inside the arena at some of the country’s largest breed shows, Larry has spent the last 28 years behind the lens of his camera.

But that’s not what he set out to do.

Growing up in Waterford and Holy, Michigan, just northwest of Detroit, Larry had friends and family with riding horses.

At age 14 he acquired an unbroke 5-yearold Quarter Horse and after some education for both, courtesy of Peggy Bannon, he set out to show with the Wolverine Riders 4-H Club. After high school Larry attended Michigan State University for a year where he gained knowledge in showing and judging.

“After working at a summer job plus having a handful of horses to ride, I didn't return to academics,” he said. “I attended the Color Breed Council for horse show judges, acquiring cards from several associations.”

Armed with his knack for organization and keen management skills, Larry gravitated more and more toward horse show management.

And, that’s where a chance encounter with Harold Campton changed the direction of his whole life.

Larry was managing a horse show at the Michigan State Fairgrounds in 1992 and Harold was the show’s official photographer.

“He invited me to attend his photography school near Ocala, Florida,” Larry recalled. Larry took Harold up on his offer and it was there that he met Dick Waltenberry, one of the Reining industry’s most well-known photographers. After the class

Mineral Point. That’s where he met fellow professional equine photographer Shane Rux, a young handyman/carpenter at the time.

“I let Harold know that I spent 40 years trying to get out of Michigan and had no interest in moving to Wisconsin,” Larry explained. “During that Easter weekend I knew that Karen would be visiting her parents in Elmhurst Illinois so I borrowed Harold wife, Patty's mini van and surprised her and her mom.”

Harold assured Larry that living in Mineral Point was not a requirement. So he returned to Michigan to meet up with Karen.

“We bought camera equipment and a fifth wheel RV,” he said. “When the salesman was going to explain how to winterize the trailer I told him we were headed south untill there were no signs that said bridge may freeze.”

The next year-and-a-half, Larry and Karen traved from show to farm. Between, they stayed at Rainbow River Campground in Dunnellon, Florida. The manager traded camping for photos to be used in their brochure.

“Following the Gulf Coast show, Clay Farrell invited us to hook-up our RV at Andy Moorman's farm in Venice Florida,” Larry explained. “We fell in love with the area and were lucky to find a place that we could afford and a seller willing to carry the balance.”

DEVELOPING A BUSINESS OF THEIR OWN In 1993 Larry established his own photography business, Larry Williams Photography and he and Karen married in 1995.

“Larry got really good, really fast,” Karen explained. “My job was to make it work as a business.”

Assignments started out with many of the spring and fall weekend Quarter Horse, Appaloosa and Paint futurities, then transitioned to all Championship shows.

Over the past several years Larry Williams Photography has served as the the official photographer of the Fort Worth Stock Show, Florida Gold/Gulf Coast, Florida State Fair, Appaloosa Naional/Youth World Show, International Buckskin Horse Association World Show, The American Buckskin Registry Association World Show, Pony Of The Americas Club (POAC) International Championships, the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity, American Paint Horse Association World Show, the Appaloosa World Show and the Paso Fino Grand National Championships.

The biggest show they ever handled together was the Paso Fino Grand National Show in Asheville, Tennessee, in 1993.

“It was film so we processed film and proofs all night, and shot the show, the backdrop and showed proofs all day,” Karen said. “It was just Larry and I, for four days.”

CHANGES IN SCENERY After several years of extensive travel, Larry and Karen, decided it would be more convenient to move to Ocala.

“As we continued to have contracts in Fort Worth, Tulsa, Oklahoma City and Perry, Georgia, we determined that Ocala shaved three hours off every trip and farm calls kept us busy between shows,” Larry said.

Then in 2007, following the NSBA World Championship Show they took a vacation to Pagosa Springs, Colorado.

“We decided it was a good time for a new adventure, so we purchased a parcel of land and a town house with the intent to

build when the house in Ocala sold,” Larry said. “After the market and real estate tanked and we both found ourselves dealing with cancer, we wrote checks to get out of upside down mortgages and our priorities changed.”

They moved back to Michigan, closer to family, and downsized to operate within their comfort zone.

CHANGES IN THE INDUSTRY In the beginning all photographs were shot on medium format film. The exposed film was shipped overnight to a lab in Columbus, Ohio, where everything was processed and print everything 8x10 and shipped back the next day at National and World Shows.

“For the futurities and smaller shows,we converted part of the RV into a dark room where we had a portable lab to process film and print contacts sheets for proofs,” Larry explained. “The transition from medium format film to 35mm film had us taking the exposed film to a local one-hour lab that printed 4x6 proofs.”

The next faze of photography was the transition from film to digital. That created a whole new challenge and expense of camera equipment and computers, giving them the opportunity to expand creativity and adjust thier marketing strategy.

Over the years Karen says she has been everything from office manager, to image wrangler to rug person.

“I have done everything except shoot the camera (with one exception) and drive the truck,” she said.

WINDING DOWN In 2021 Larry and Karen Williams announced they would retire at the end of the year.

“When we started our business, I set up a three-digit code system to number images and always joked that we would not go past #999,” Karen laughed. “I said that I would not ‘roll over’ to 001 again, and wouldn’t go to four digits. Well, it just so happened that the 2021 Appaloosa World Championship Show was #999.”

The effort of the setup and management of the events was getting to be too much.

“The pleasure was no longer worth the pain,” Karen said.

“But I still love to edit and Larry still loves to shoot.”

WHAT LIES AHEAD It’s been an adjustment being at home, both Larry and Karen admit.

“I love to garden, but have not been able to enjoy watching things grow because we would plant and leave,” she said. “We live near one of the prettiest lakes up here, so we bought a small boat to enjoy it. We both are outdoor people, so enjoying this area will be fun. Oh, and we got chickens!”

You may continue to see Larry with his camera at shows or farm calls, and Karen may continue to edit images for other companies.

“We are both happy and well, and we think now is the best time to step away and take time to do the other things we enjoy,” she said.

While the time may have been right to step away Larry says he is grateful to have had the opportunity to make a significant contribution to the equine industry and fulfill his passion of earning a living with horses.

“With pace of technology and challenges of travel, we just felt it was time to pass the baton to the next generation,” he said.

These days, Larry and Karen Williams are spending a lot less time behind a camera and a computer. They are looking forward to gardening, riding motorcycles and spending time on their new boat. They love hunting and fishing and spending time outdoors.

More than $300,000 in new donations from foundations, corporations and individuals to help support veterinary and animal-welfare groups in war-torn Ukraine, according to the American Veterinary Medical Foundation.

Donations include $100,000 from the Doris Day Animal Foundation and $50,000 each from Ethos Veterinary Health and People, Pets & Vets. More than 800 individuals also have contributed a total of over $135,000 to help pets in need in Ukraine, said the AVMF, the charitable arm of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The new donations follow the March announcement by the AVMF that it would direct a $100,000 donation from Merck Animal Health to Ukrainian relief efforts, and would match Merck’s grant with a donation of $100,000. The AVMA is encouraging its 99,500 members and the public to contribute to the relief efforts by donating to the AVMF. “The generosity of the veterinary and animal-welfare communities has never been more evident, or more appreciated,” says Dr. Douglas Kratt, Chairman of the AVMF. "These significant grants from the Doris Day Animal Foundation, Ethos Veterinary Health and People, Pets and Vets, plus all the individual donors stepping forward to help, will support veterinary professionals in caring for animals in crisis due to the war in Ukraine.”

The Doris Day Foundation responded.

“When we heard that AVMF was providing food, medical care, disaster relief and emergency support to animals affected by the Ukrainian crisis, we knew we wanted to help," said Dr. Bob Bashara, CEO of Doris Day Animal Foundation

and the recipient of the 2018 AVMA Animal Welfare Award.

The foundation will also continue additional fundraising for Ukrainian relief.

“We are proud to carry on Doris Day’s legacy by donating $100,000 to this crucial humanitarian cause,” Dr. Bashara said. “Nothing was closer to Doris’ heart than making this a better world for animals and the people who love them.

What better way to honor her on what would have been her 100th birthday (#DorisDay100) than helping those in the most dire need?”

Ethos Veterinary Health also pledged support.

“We are thankful for the AVMF and their efforts aiding the pets of Ukrainian refugees. Ethos is proud to support their important work with this donation,” said Holly Firestine, Chief People Officer of Ethos Veterinary Health.

The People, Pets & Vets organization was generous with its donation.

“This cause is extremely important to us at PPV,” said founder Dr. Mike Murphy. “We are all animal lovers and the thought of having to leave your home and your pet behind is

unfathomable and heart-wrenching. We know the turmoil that it would cause us and by no means do these pets deserve to be forever separated from their families.”

The donations are providing food, medical care, disaster relief, and emergency support for veterinary and other organizations to protect animal welfare and the welfare of the care providers affected by the war. The AVMF is responsible for directing distribution of the funding. One hundred percent of the donations will be used to help those in need and animal care.

Grant recipients so far are: • IFAW • Greater Good Charities • Street Dog Coalition • European Association of Zoos and Aquaria • Ukrainian Small Animal Veterinary Association • Polish Small Animal Veterinary Association Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation The Ukrainian Equestrian Federation Charity Foundation, registered in Belgium, is supporting the Ukrainian horse owners, riding schools, athletes, equestrian clubs, stables and professionals, with the assistance from the FEI (International Equestrian Federation) Help includes counseling support and other kinds of needs-based assistance on the ground, including mapping shelter options and assisting with relocation of horses, gathering offers for goods and organizing logistics to deliver goods to equestrians and their horses both in Ukraine and/or in their temporary locations in Europe.

The group monitors situations with horses´ welfare and collaborates with FEI and national equestrian federations.

Ohio professional trainer passionate about teaching horses patterns Text Corrine S. Borton Photos Corrin Hunt & Sally Blackwell Athens, Ohio professional trainer Larry Cross says he may not get the best horses ... but he always tries to get the best out of the horses he has.

“I live and breathe this daily,” he said.

Cross is an all-around horse trainer who is passionate about the pattern classes.

“My clients show anything from Halter, Showmanship, Hunter Under Saddle, Equitation, Western Pleasure, Trail, Western Riding, Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail, Reining and even some Speed Events,” he explained.

Cross says he has had horses that are one eventers in the past and they have done well, but my goal is to respect the horse and find what they enjoy and keep them from burning out.

“While I appreciate a great pleasure horse, I am too bored with just one thing,” he explained. “Plus, I think our limited horse is becoming a thing of the past since folks want to get more bang for their buck.”

Cross says he has taken the most used word in our industry and made a useable training tool for his clients.

“To me the word ‘broke’ is so vague, I can’t seem to find the root of

why we use it as commonly as we do and with little clarity,” he said.

“I use this as a guide to express where a particular horse is in its training as it pertains to a discipline such as showmanship,” Cross said.

“I love tangible things to teach with, I can emphasize it better if people can see where I am pointing.”

At age 53, Cross’ knowledge comes from years of experience and a lot of influence from some very successful horse trainers. He was born in Athens into a family of horse enthusiasts. His parents, Hilda Cross and the late Arthur Cross, both had horses when they were kids and shared their passion with their children - Nancy, Mark and twins, Larry and Terry.

“Terry and I were always playing around with our dad’s pulling ponies and our older sister had horses too,” he explained. “Our sister Nancy’s boys showed when they were younger. So, you can say it runs in our genes.”

As a teen, Larry shadowed Dennis Maxon, as he prepped his client’s Halter horses.

“Dennis was very meticulous and had some of the best Halter horses during that era,” he said. “He had a small program but really showed me how to get a presentation in the arena.”

Following his graduation from high school, Larry went to work for John Blackstone in Dalton, Ohio, who at the time was standing five to six stallions at any given time.

“We were foaling out a lot of mares,” Larry recalled.

our time. I was riding all the young stock and trying to prepare to sell.”

Larry says he also learned a lot from his brother, Terry, who was working for Gary Trubee and Debbi Trubee at the time.

“I would spend a lot of time there and learned more there about showing, hauling, and how to treat your clients,” Larry explained. “They were great role models for both of us.”

Larry established his own training operation, first in Athens, moving several times, to Michigan and then to Newark, Ohio and Pickerington, Ohio, before returning to Athens.

He works a full-time job as a Client Concierge for Envisage Wealth, part of Ameriprise Financial, an investment company. His horse clientele is limited to three to six horses these days, which he says, is the ideal situation for him.

“We also have a larger number of people that show with us that either gets lessons occasionally or just needs my assistance at the horse shows,” he said. “I still think there is another move in my future, but it would be more southern with better climate and more horse industry.”

Larry rents a 12-stall barn with a 100-by-200 indoor arena with a large tack stall wash racks, restrooms, and spacious parking area for trailer hookups for when clients attend one of his boot camps. The facility also includes an added-on living quarters overlooking the arena, where Larry lives with Cathy Johnson, his partner of almost 12 years.

Even though Terry now lives in Texas and helps run his own training operation, Dry River Ranch, he and Stephen Stephens still offer Larry advice and a helping hand.

“When he comes back to Ohio for family visits, we always end up working with my stock and he offers his advice,” he said.

Over the years, Larry has had numerous successful show horses and clients under his guidance. Just a few of them include: Perfect Potential; Zippos Cool Bar; Peptos Red Spark; VS Security Code; The Krymsun Invester; Dont Miss A Step; Good To Be A Redrock; Super In Red; Unexpected Notice; and Shez Willy Dynamic.

taylor BURGESS New York native busy with shows, college classes and her own business Text Corrine S. Borton Photos Ella Velhalla & Shane Rux Taylor Burgess is a busy college senior with big plans for the show pen and for her budding business, Horse Record Books.

A native of Horseheads, New York, Burgess is a student at the University of Georgia, where she is a member of the school’s D1 Equestrian Team, majoring in Communications Studies.

After graduation in May, she plans to return to New York to work in various roles at Beecher Emission Solution Technologies, a company owned by her mother, Angela Burgess and step-father, Scott Beecher.

She’ll also helps out at her mother’s boarding and rehabilitation facility at the family’s farm and will continue to develop Horse Record Books, a planning tool for horse owners.

But Burgess is also looking forward to getting back to showing more with Made By Da Mob (Harold), a 3-year-old sorrel gelding by Machine Made and out of her former show partner, Shes Relentless (Coco). Harold is currently in training with Pennsylvania trainer Danny Desmond and Burgess plans to show him in 3-year-old Non-Pro events later this summer.

“Harold is a character,” Burgess admitted. “Harold chews on his tongue when he’s bored. The funny part is his mother and full brother do the exact same thing. The three of them look almost identical too.”

Burgess actually got her start showing with Shes Relentless.

“I had been riding horses since I was 5 or 6 but it was 50 | INSTRIDE EDITION | MAY 2022

not until we bought Coco that I began showing at big shows,” she explained.

Burgess won her first American Paint Horse Association (APHA) Youth World Championship title in 14-18 Hunter Under Saddle with David Buckham (Rodney), a 2007 gelding by All Time Fancy out of a thoroughbred mare.

“He has won numerous world titles with different exhibitors, but that win with him was my first APHA World Championship and his first and only youth title,” she said.

Burgess also enjoyed tremendous success with RL Talk About Sudden (Bugsby), a 2003 AQHA/APHA gelding by A Sudden Impulse out of RL Hotroddin Sweetie.

In 2015, they won the All-Around Youth 14-18 title at the AQHA Novice Championship in Las Vegas.

Then in 2016 they were the number one 14-18 APHA team as well as the High Point Novice Youth 14-18 and Novice Youth team at the Quarter Horse Congress.

“I showed Bugsy all through my 14-18 years up until he suffered a career-ending injury. “In 2017, our last year showing together, we won the 14-18 Showmanship at the APHA Youth World Show and were Reserve in Western Riding.”

Winning the APHA’s Top 14-18 team title in 2016 with Bugsy is by far Burgess’ greatest accomplishment to date.

“That was the most rewarding prize I have won in my career so far,” she said. “We hauled all year almost every weekend or at least two weekends a month. Lots of memories

were made that year and our team (Parks Show Horses) claimed the top 13 & Under, 14-18 and Amateur titles, which was super exciting!

Burgess loves competing in Hunter Under Saddle and Western Riding – and they could not be more different.

“Hunter Under Saddle and Western Riding are my favorites. I love nothing more than a big horse with a lofty trot and a horse that is a fancy lead changer,” she said.

Although Burgess is currently working Desmond, she says many have had an impact on her career in the show ring.

“I’ve had a lot of influential trainers in different parts of my show career, but the one that particularly stands out is Maggie Johnston,” she said. “She gave me a great foundation and is one of the main reasons I have had success thus far. I always say she’s the reason I caught the horse show bug.”

That foundation will come in handy when Burgess ventures into the world of speed events.

“I have a barrel horse and would love to get more into that industry,” she revealed. “Before going to school my parents bought me a weanling, Money Bagz (Amex), now a 4-year-old and in training to prepare for futurities.

“My goal is to run him at the Quarter Horse Congress this year,” Burgess said.

When she is not busy with school work or at a show, Burgess enjoys spending time with her family and friends at her family’s house on Seneca Lake.

“I live in the Finger Lakes Region where there are over 100 wineries and breweries,” she said. “It’s absolutely beautiful.”

And she dreams of someday visiting Greece.

“I’m a big ‘Mamma Mia’ fan so obviously, I must go,” she explained. “Greece has been a bucket list vacation to me for a while now.”

While spring is the most obvious time to transition your horse to pasture, you may also want to consider these practices any time your horse's turnout management changes. For example, if you bring home a new horse that was on poor pasture but your farm has high-quality pasture, you may want to transition it gradually to the new pasture. If you are rotationally grazing and your horse had to spend time confined to its sacrifice lot due to inadequate forage (in the summer, perhaps), then you may want to transition gradually back to pasture.

What if My Horse was On Pasture All Winter?

Horses that spent the winter out on the pasture rather than confined to a sacrifice lot will be transitioning themselves to the spring grass by grazing it as it begins to grow.

At first, very little grass will be available so horses will not

be able to eat much of it. As more grass comes in, their digestive tracts will be adjusting to the new feed source. Continue feeding hay into the spring to help with the transition.

While this is less desirable from a plant biology and pasture health perspective, it means most horses will be fine if they are turned out while the pastures are greening up in the spring. An exception would be laminitis-prone horses that have equine metabolic syndrome or insulin dysregulation, as the NSC content of spring grass can become quite high and cause undesirable health issues. It is always best to consult with your veterinarian when making pasture grazing decisions for laminitis-prone horses.

quincy katherine CLAGG She’s only 11, but already has a long list of show achievements Text Brianna Mason Photos Shane Rux She’s only 11 years old, but already Quincy Clagg, of Gastonia, North Carolina has achieved more in the show pen than some competitors do their entire careers.

The daughter of Josh and Courtney Clagg, Quincy, like her parents and grandparents, grew up riding and at shows so it was really a lifestyle for her.

“My parents grew up showing Quarter horses,” Quincy said. My sister (Carly) and I had a pony that I started rid-

ing as soon as I could walk. Once I got on a big horse didn’t want to ride a pony anymore.”

Quincy first started competing at an open show in Lincolnton, North Carolina and quickly moved up to AQHA sanctioned events with a 2000 gelding she called Roanie.

In 2018 Quincy showed Vallejo Zipntil Dark, a 2000 gelding, to a Reserve Championship in Small Fry Western Pleasure at the Quarter Horse Congress.

Then in 2019 Quincy teamed with SH Counting Stars, a 2004 bay gelding by Blazing Hot out of Sheza Good Gamble, to win a Congress Championship in Small Fry Hunter Under Saddle. They were also Reserve Champions in Small Fry Showmanship and ninth in Small Fry Equitation.

Quincy’s latest passion is Ranch competition and she is currently under the direction of Steve, Becky and Noel Meadows.

Teamed with Fancy Blue Roo, a 2009 gray gelding by Gallo Del Cielo and out of MM Fancy Figure, the youngster won the Level 3 Ranch Riding 13 & Under at the 2021 AQHA Youth World Show and finished Reserve with Mr Great Red, a 2017 sorrel gelding by Great Red Chex out of Our Hot Chic. Later in the year Quincy and Fancy Blue Roo won the Youth Ranch Riding 13 & Under and the Youth Ranch Rail at the Quarter Horse Congress and she placed fourth in Youth Ranch Riding 13 & Under with Mr Great Red. This year, in addition to Fancy Blue Roo and Mr Great Red, Quincy will also be showing Magnum Gunshy, a 2019 sorrel gelding by Magnum With A Dream out of A Little Gunshy.

She said her favorite class to watch is Ranch Rail.

“It’s so cool to see all the different kinds of horses,” she said.

Quincy is a student at Gaston Day School in Gastonia North Carolina, where she plays volleyball for her school and she also enjoys beach volleyball. A lot of the free time she has after school work and riding is spent with her family, including her parents, sister; grandparents, Mike and Betty Clagg; Charlie and Linda Dobbs; and Johne Dobbs, who was elected to the AQHA Executive Committee in 2010, served as the 2013-14 president and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2019.

With parents and grandparents as trainers, Quincy feels like she’s carrying on the family tradition of showing horses. But she also attributes her passion to the sport to many other things.

“Showing means so much to me because of all of the responsibilities and life lessons you learn,” she explained. “And because it is so much fun and the people you make are lifelong friends.”

NEW APPOINTMENT (IN) AQHA NEWS

The American Quarter Horse Association is pleased to announce that Karl Stressman has been selected to assume the executive vice president leadership role. Stressman will take the reins as the leader of the largest equine breed registry in the world on May 16.

Stressman’s resume includes several positions within the western industry over the years, including Director of Event Marketing at Wrangler, Commissioner for the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and President of the United States Team Roping Association.

“I’ve had the distinct privilege of working with some of the greatest companies and associations in the western industry,” said Stressman. “I am truly honored and appreciative to have the opportunity to add AQHA to that list. There are very few positions that could lure me out of retirement, and AQHA is certainly at the top of that list. I am looking forward to working closely with the AQHA Executive Committee and staff to continue the growth initiatives for the future.”

As AQHA executive vice president, Stressman will serve as chief executive officer of the Association. He will not only lead the Association’s staff, but he will also work with a variety of passionate groups comprised of industry professionals and lifelong American Quarter Horse owners, breeders and competitors to ensure the Association is on a path for consistent growth and success.

EDUCATING JUDGES, EXHIBITORS

NSBA IN PROCESS OF EVALUATING PROTOCOL FOR OFFICIANTS The National Snaffle Bit Association has launched a data gathering project that will evaluate the effectiveness of our current educational protocol for judges. The information will be used to provide future education for not only the judges, but exhibitors, who may or may not be aware of the standard for which they are being judged.

Two items will be reviewed from the data collected: • The percentage of horses being presented with a twobeat jog in a Western Pleasure class; • The agreement on the standard by which the jog is judged in any given Western Pleasure class.

The NSBA Judges Committee recognizes that the jog is just one element of the evaluation of a horse’s overall performance used in judging Western Pleasure. The intent of the project is to be able to present more meaningful education for both

judges and exhibitors, encouraging both to meet the standard of excellence while judging Western Pleasure and showing the Western Pleasure horses to the best of their ability.

NSBA has selected five shows where judges will be asked to denote on their judge’s cards, horses that are performing a two-beat jog. In no particular order, judges will be asked to mark the numbers on the back of their cards of horses that, in their opinion, perform a two-beat jog, regardless of quality or degree of difficulty. The data that is gathered will be utilized in future educational material.

Shows selected for this project include: A Sudden Impulse; NSBA Show and Futurity; Back to Berrien Futurity; Tom Powers Triple Challenge Futurity; · NSBA World Championship Show and Breeders Championship Futurity; and The Championship NSBA Show and Futurity.

RANCH HORSE TRIPLE CROWN WORTH $40,000 (IN) APHA NEWS

Big bucks are on the line for ranch horses at the APHA World Championship Show, thanks to the Ranch Horse Triple Crown Challenge, presented by Four Star Quarter Horses.

This unique, all-breed competition format has divisions for Open and Non-Pro exhibitors in ranch riding, ranch trail and ranch rail pleasure, with a total of $40,000 added guaranteed. Entry fees bolster the purse, with combined totals reaching nearly $200,000 with at least 50 entries.

Enter individual classes, or try all three for a shot at a $10,000 bonus payout to the Triple Crown Challenge Champion, payable to the Open and/or Non-Pro who wins all three classes in their respective division.

The APHA World Championship Show takes place June 24-July 10 at the Will Rogers Memorial Center in Fort Worth, Texas. Details are in the APHA Premium Book, and entry forms will be released soon.
