Madeleine Bayless waited 20 years to return to showing horses and with the help of two very special new horses – Im Willy Good Today and Best Money Made – 2023 is shaping up to be a year to remember for the Alabama native.

Bayless didn’t come from a horse family or have any natural exposure to horses as a child but the “bug bit her,” as she describes, when she was just 7 years old. Her mother signed her up for riding lessons at a local barn and she progressed quickly, competing at local shows on a lesson horse. Things changed in a big way when Bayless’ trainer told her father about a 3-year-old palomino gelding that she thought her young student should try out. JMK Indian Jack was young and green but at the same time gentle and talented.

Jack was purchased for Madeleine and the family enlisted the help of Vickie Kent, who was training professionally in Alabama at the time, to help the youngster take her riding to the next level.

“Vickie gave me just the push and confidence I needed to strengthen my riding and learn new disciplines,” Bayless said. “Jack and I were soon competing in all-around events from Halter, Showmanship, Horsemanship, Equitation, Western Riding and Trail, to occasionally some Barrels and Poles for fun. We earned numerous high point honors, circuit championships, and all-around titles, including a Palomino Horse Breeders of America (PHBA) World Championship in Youth Showmanship and Reserve World Championship in Youth Trail.”

Like many competitors, Bayless eventually set aside her passion for showing horses to concentrate on her education, career and eventually a family of her own. Then in 2019 she returned to the industry as an amateur competitor when she purchased A Hot Vodka (Marti), a 2010 gray gelding by One Hot Krymsun, with the intention of just competing at local and regional AQHA shows.

A natural desire to improve pushed Bayless to reach out to her good friend (and Vickie Kent’s daughter), Christie Arrington in the summer of 2020.

“I knew Christie when she was in school at Auburn and I was just a kid,” Madeleine explained. “Having known her for so long, and knowing her skill, talent, and personal values I knew she was the obvious choice of a trainer for me.” s

Marti helped Bayless transition back into showing and the two enjoyed a lot of success at the local and state level. But it didn’t take long for Madeleine’s competitive nature to take over and she set her sights on higher goals, including competing at the national level.

The horse tapped to help her accomplish that was RV Won Good Version (Vern), a 2005 bay gelding sired by Good Version and out of Ill Be Dun Won It.

Bred and raised by Vickie Kent and her husband, Ronnie, Vern won many titles with the Kent family early in his career, including a 2012 Congress Championship in 12-14 Trail and a win in 13 & Under Trail at the AQHA Youth World Show with Christie’s son, Clay Arrington, and a third place bronze trophy in Trail at the 2012 AQHA Select World Show with Vickie Kent. In 2020 Vern went on to win the Novice Youth Trail at the National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) World Show with his new owner Madison Fussell.

“When we found out Vern might be available Christie and I were thrilled,” Bayless said. “We jumped in the truck and headed to Texas to bring him home in February 2021.”

Later that same year Madeleine piloted Vern to a fourth place in Level 1 Amateur Trail at the Quarter Horse Congress and they won the Novice Amateur Trail at the A Sudden Impulse Futurity in April 2022.

“We also have won numerous circuit championships and high point awards,” Bayless said. “He has been the very best show partner.”

Madeleine Bayless is pictured on this page (top to bottom) with A Hot Vodka; at the 2021 Quarter Horse Congress with RV Won Good Version and collecting her prizes, with the help of her son, William, after winning the Novice Amateur Trail at the 2022 A Sudden Impulse Futurity in Ocala, Florida with Vern. On the opposite page, Madeleine is pictured with her new western show partner, Best Money Made (top) and Clay Arrington is pictured showing Cash in Trail at the 2022 NSBA World Show.

And now, once again, it’s time to move on. This year, Madeleine’s 9-year-old daughter, Lynnley, will take over showing Vern in Small Fry classes at the Arizona Sun Circuit, the AQHA Level 1 Championships and at the Quarter Horse Congress, where she will compete in Showmanship, Horsemanship and Trail.

Madeleine will turn all her attention to her new show partners.

She purchased Best Money Made a 2018 bay gelding sired by Machine Made and out of KM Best To Be Slow with over $25,000 in Western Pleasure earnings from Nick and Carmen Mayabb’s client, Ashley Nietzer at the 2022 A Sudden Impulse Futurity in Ocala.

He was just being started in Trail and Western Riding and Christie and Clay Arrington thought he might be a good fit for Madeleine.

“We had been looking for a western show partner to do the Western Riding and Trail for a while, without success,” Bayless said. “They rode him first and I was immediately

struck by how pretty he moved and the ease of his lead changes even though he was very green. He was obviously a natural talent.”

Clay showed Cash to an eighth place in the Level 1 Junior Western Riding and placed eighth in the Green Junior Western Riding-Limited Rider and 15th in First Year Green Trail at the NSBA World Show.

Cash will be shown by Clay Arrington at the Arizona Sun Circuit in Green Western Riding and Trail and with Madeleine in Level 1 Amateur Western Riding and Trail.

After they plan to compete at the NSBA World Show, the Quarter Horse Congress and the AQHA World Show.

“My goal for Cash this year is for Clay to finish him in Western Riding and Trail,” Bayless said. “He has gotten so much more broke just in the last year. He has all the talent to be successful in the Green with Clay and L1 with me this year.”

Christie Arrington agrees.

“He has beautiful lead changes and lots of cadence over the trail poles,” she explained. “Plus, he is reliable to show and is going to be a great partner for Madeleine. He tries very hard and wants to please.”

He is also quite the character.

“We call him Dennis the Menace,” Bayless admitted. “He is super busy…all the time. It’s a joke that it’s good he is so much fun to ride because he is a nightmare to hold! He wants to pick at you, or the lead, or the reins, or his leg wraps or anything he can get in his mouth. He also has a knack for figuring out how to get his stall door open. But he is so gentle and willing to ride that we forgive him for it.”

That will come in handy when Bayless adds Horsemanship to her lineup down the road.

Madeleine’s other goal - to find a highly competitive Hunter Under Saddle partner took a little bit longer to achieve. She started asking about multiple Congress and World Champion Im Willy Good Today (Drake), a 2016 brown gelding sired by Good I Will Be and out of A Walk In The Sky, at the 2021 NSBA World Show.

“I was sitting in the stands and in trotted a big, gorgeous brown hunt-seater who looked like he was floating on air, Madeleine recalled. “I was mesmerized watching him show that week. Then I saw how gentle he was with Erin (Boatwright) and her young son outside of the show pen. He had it all, beauty, talent, and a good mind. It was love at first sight.

But Boatwright was just getting started riding Drake s

JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023| INSTRIDE EDITION | 15

and had no interest in selling him at the time. Bayless watched them all year long and again at the 2022 NSBA World Show. She asked Christie to reach out to Boatwright’s trainer, Keith Miller, to see if perhaps now she would consider parting with him.

“My persistence paid off and Erin agreed to let me ride him,” Bayless said. “He was everything I thought he would be … and more. We started talking and working through the details and I became his proud owner after the World Show this past year.”

Im Willy Good Today won his first Championship titles in Amateur Select Hunter Under Saddle at the NSBA World Show, the Congress and the AQHA World Show, with his breeder Sandra Morgan, of Scottsdale, Arizona.

In their first year together, Boatwright and Drake claimed titles almost every time they stepped into the show pen. They kicked off their career in 2021 by winning the Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle at the Fun In The Sun Circuit in Venice, Florida. Later that year they dominated the NSBA World Championship Show, winning the Limited and Open divisions of the Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle as well as the Amateur Hunter Under Saddle. Not to be outdone, Miller piloted Drake to NSBA World Championship titles in the Maturity Open Hunter Under Saddle and Junior Hunter Under Saddle. The also took home Breeders Championship Futurity (BCF) Championships in 4-6-Year-Old Open Hunter Under Saddle, 4-6-Year-Old Limited and Open Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle, they won all eight of the classes they entered at the show. Later that year Boatwright piloted Drake to an AQHA World Championship in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle and Miller captured a Reserve World Championship title with Drake in Junior Hunter Under Saddle. Boatwright claimed her second straight AQHA World Championship title in Amateur Hunter Under Saddle in November and they also won both the Limited and Open Divisions of the Non-Pro Hunter Under Saddle Maturity at the 2022 Congress where Miller piloted Drake to wins in the Open Hunter Under Saddle Maturity and the Senior Hunter Under Saddle at Congress and another AQHA World Championship title in Level 3 Senior Hunter Under Saddle.

“Drake knows his job and loves doing it,” Bayless said. “He is consistent, honest, and a natural talent. One of his biggest strengths to me is his brain. I love that he is so big and lovely in the hunt seat pen, but is good minded and trustworthy. Having both talent and brains makes him worth his weight in gold.”

Bayless will make her debut on Drake in the Level 1 Hunter Under Saddle at the Arizona Sun Circuit and Miller will show him in Level 3 Senior Hunter Under Saddle.

“The goals are really more for me than for Drake because we all know he is a rock star,” Bayless said. “I haven’t shown a Hunter Under Saddle horse of Drake’s caliber before. So I am taking my time building the fundamentals to make sure Drake and I have a solid partnership and he knows what I am asking him to do. Christie has been working with me regularly and Keith has come down to

spend ‘boot camp’ time with us as well. So right now the goal is just to put the work in and solidify our partnership.”

After the Sun Circuit, Bayless plans to show Drake at the AQHA Level 1 Championship Show, the NSBA World Show, the Congress and the AQHA World Show.

“Keith and Christie will share riding him in the Open Hunter Under Saddle classes depending on the show,” she said.

Obviously, Madeleine has big goals in the show pen this year but she’s equally interested in the process.

Because she has known Christie for so long she says they are like sisters so they work hard but they keep things fun too. That’s especially important to Madeleine, especially now that Lynnley has started her own show career.

“It has been a great home for us,” she said.

Christie says Madeleine is great to work with because she is very determined and focused.

16 | INSTRIDE EDITION | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023

“She is always willing to work to understand and apply what she is taught,” she explained. “Equally important, Madeleine always puts her horses first. Their health and well being is most important.”

Madeleine gets a lot of support from her family as well. Although he is not involved with the horses, her husband, Rod supports her and Lynnley in every way possible to make sure they can prioritize riding and showing. He also enjoys hunting and baseball with their son, William, 7.

“He is my rock, both at work and at home,” she said.

ttt

Madeleine met Rod at an Alabama football game when they were seniors in high school. They have been together for 23 years and married for 16. After graduating summa cum laude from the University of Alabama in 2004 with a Bachelor of Science degree, doublemajoring in marketing and French, Madeleine went to work for RFMS, Inc., a software development company focused on the niche market of the flooring industry,in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

“We develop a flooring specific ERP system, as well as estimating software and related Apps for flooring dealers and contractors,” she explained. “My father founded the business in the 1980s and after 12 years working in various roles I took over as President/CEO and owner in 2019.”

It was that year that Rod joined her at RFMS to oversee all the client-facing operations as COO, after a nearly 20-year career in the outdoor advertising business.

“Working with him has been a dream come true as our strengths and weaknesses have proven to be very complementary, Madeleine said.

Last June Madeleine’s position shifted somewhat when RFMS was acquired by a global software company focused on technology for interior design spaces, Compusoft and 2020 (recently rebranded as Cyncly).

“While I still oversee the flooring division as General Manager, we now enjoy the support from colleagues worldwide as we integrate into the broader organization,” she explained.

When Madeleine and Lynnley are not showing, the family loves to travel.

Our family is always on the go and have had the privilege of traveling to many interesting places around the world,” Madeleine explained. “We always have a trip in the works.

She admits she is a bit of a “Francophile” and loves all things French.

“The food, language, culture, and beautiful country of France all have drawn me in since I was a teenager,” she admitted. “We also love being at the beach, especially the 30A area along the Florida panhandle where we have a home and our kids have grown up playing.”

This year, Madeleine’s focus will be on showing.

“Starting the year with two new show partners is exciting, but nerve-wracking,” she said. “In the short-term my goal is to build a great foundation with them both and make sure we are getting in the riding time to truly gel together. My longerterm goal is to find success at the majors. I have dreamed of an NSBA World Champion title and so that is on my radar, as is the Congress.”

EQUINE EXPERTS

Court cases showing importance of hiring qualified witnesses when involved in litigation

Have you ever considered yourself an equine expert? Unless you are a professional, you may just consider yourself to be a horse owner and lover. Nevertheless, everyone knows that there are certain things that you do (or don’t do) with horses that are just common sense… right? Wrong – at least according to a panel of Appellate Judges in New Jersey.

In a recent decision, the New Jersey Appellate Division ruled that expert testimony was required to explain how to handle a horse. Specifically, the Court ruled that an expert was required to inform a jury whether it was reasonable for a handler to shank a horse from an elevated position and while allowing the horse to stand on pavers. In the New Jersey case, the handler was seated on the top fence rail near the show pen and was shanking the horse’s lead rope because the horse was “fidgety.” The horse was also standing with its front feet on pavers. As the handler shanked the horse, the horse pulled its head back and forth and began scrambling on the pavers. The horse was unable to regain its footing and fell. As the horse fell, it struck a nearby individual causing personal injuries. The injured party brought a lawsuit for negligence against the handler and the owner of the horse.

any formalized education on equine studies may still be considered an expert. If the proposed expert is deemed qualified by the court, then he or she will be able to provide opinion testimony about issues in the case.

Why would I need an equine expert?

In equine-related lawsuits, parties often hire expert witnesses to testify at trial. As outlined in the case above, the role of an expert will be to assist the jury (and judge) in understanding key issues in the case. This may include the standard of care for safety related cases in the event of personal injury to you or another, but can also touch upon other issues. For example, say your horse is injured or killed in a trailering accident and the insurance company wants to pay you far less than what you believe the horse is worth. In this case, it would be wise to retain an expert to provide an appraisal of the horse.

The courts will look at not only a proposed expert’s credentials such as training and education, but also his or her experience and knowledge.

At the trial level, the injured party’s case was dismissed. The Appeal Court upheld the dismissal and stated that expert testimony was required. Specifically, the Court found that jurors would not be familiar with whether it was reasonable to shank the horse from an elevated position and allow it to stand with its front hooves on pavers. The Court concluded that handling of horses requires “specialized knowledge.” Accordingly, expert testimony was necessary to explain the “standard of care” and how, if at all, the handler deviated from the standard when shanking the horse.

This case illustrates the importance of hiring an appropriate equine expert should you become involved in litigation.

Who is qualified as an equine expert?

Who is an expert? Does simply owning a horse qualify you as an expert? Of course, it depends. The Federal Rules of Evidence define an expert witness as someone who is qualified “by knowledge, skill, experience, training or education.” Fed. R.E. 702. Every State has some version of this rule as well. The courts will look at not only a proposed expert’s credentials such as training and education, but also his or her experience and knowledge. Experience and knowledge may be just as important as a formal education in determining whether an expert’s opinion will be admissible. For example, someone who has been training horses for 30 years, but who did not complete

Essentially, you should consider hiring an expert any time you are faced with equine related litigation. Most equine issues are not common sense in the eyes of the law.

So I want to hire an expert – what exactly will the expert do for me?

Typically, experts will provide a written report. The report should outline the expert’s background and qualifications, discuss the facts of the case, cite to any relevant industry standards and explain any breach of those standards. If an expert is providing an appraisal report, it should include information on the value of other similar horses. Think of it way you would have a home or property appraised. Your expert should give a good explanation for any opinions that are offered. You should also expect an expert to testify at a deposition or trial, if necessary.

American Quarter Horse Association exhibitors flocked to Tampa, Florida to bid farewell to 2022 and usher in the new year as the Florida Quarter Horse Association presented the Gold and Gulf Coast circuits.

A total of 12 AQHA shows and one Level 1 Show, plus National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) classes were featured Dec. 27 to Jan. 6, at the Bob Thomas Equestrian Center.

The Gold Coast celebrated another record-breaking season, according to Kathy Avolt, of An Equine Production, which manages both circuits.

“Numbers for AQHA topped almost 27,000 alone,” she said. “The number of showing horses was also up. When you add in NSBA - wow!”

Professionals, amateur and youth have been competing at the Gold and Gulf Coast circuits for decades because of big classes, great prizes and, of course, the weather. This year’s event served up a mixed bag of weather from sunny skies to sudden storms, but there were plenty of smiles and very few complaints even when competition lasted well into the evening hours.

Make It Official

PHBA offers reduced rates for registration through April 30

If you have not yet registered your yearling or older horses with the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, now is the time to act.

For the next two months, the PHBA is offering discounted registration fees to all members.

“The association has been offering the discounted registration program for many years now,” said General Manager Terri Green. “The decision to continue it recently is due to the inflation brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic.”

Green said the association feels the program helps to get more people to register their palomino and palomino bred horses.

And the program has paid off.

“We do have people that hold off to register their horses until the special runs,” Green explained.

The registration special applies to all registration typesregular registry as well as palomino bred horses.

Now through April 30, eligible yearlings can be registered and receive papers for just $60. The fee for eligible horses that are 2-years-old and over is $80.

Horses registered with the American Morgan Horse Association, American Quarter Horse Association, American Saddlebred Horse Association, Arabian Horse Association, Jockey Club (Thoroughbred), International Morab Registry, American Paint Horse Association, Appaloosa Horse Club, Mountain Pleasure Horse Association, Rocky Mountain Horse Association, the Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association, the American Holsteiner Horse Association, and the United Quarab Registry are eligible to apply for regular registry provided the horse meet color and white rules.

If your horse is not eligible for registration with one of these breed associations, then your horse will fall under the Color/Conformation rules.

Color/Conformation horses: 35mm pictures - (clear full view front, back, each side, and any additional close-ups of white markings, brands, scars, etc.) must accompany the application. Polaroid photographs are not accepted.

In 2011, the PHBA introduced the Palomino Bred registration category, which allows horses with at least one PHBA registered parent to be registered, regardless of the horse’s color.

The PHBA provides recreational, financial and competitive rewards for every age group, and classes for novice, amateur, youth and open competitors. Classes range from halter to Jumping, Horsemanship to Driving, Cutting to Saddle Seat, Pole Bending to Reining, Parade Horse and Barrel Racing. In addition, there are many opportunities for trail riders and youth,

as well as incentives for stallion owners.

To be eligible for any of the registration discounts offered through April 30, the owner/applicant must be a PHBA member in good standing.

“It’s a great time to take advantage of the discounted fees,” Green said.

PHBA maintains records on more than 93,000 horses and owners, more than 250,000 horse show entries, and over five hundred horse shows. PHBA provides recreational, financial, and competitive rewards for every age group, extending more than 900 approved classes for amateurs, novice/amateur, youth and open programs. Classes range from halter to jumping, horsemanship to driving, cutting to saddle seat, pole bending to reining, and barrel racing.

For additional information on the discounted registration program, to obtain applications for registration or membership visit the association’s website at www.palominohba.com.

Plans are underway for Convention, World Show

I hope all had a Merry Christmas and welcome to the 2023 New Year. Show season will get underway soon with Mississippi and Texas hosting shows. Check out the show schedule at www.palominohba.com and start planning your show year. World Show information is already online, and entry information will soon be available. You will also notice that Terry Bradshaw Quarter Horses (TBQH) has again raised the ante for the Amateur Halter payback and added an award for the Premier Amateur Halter sex divisions. The “Trail Shootout” will return as some other added money classes will. Plans are for an added AQHA special event class for the ranch riders so look for more information soon. Our 2023 Sponsor Drive is underway and look for information about advertising in the program and sponsor classes soon in your in-box, web page and social media.

The national convention registration information is on the website, I would like to challenge those that are on the fence, think their voice and vote doesn’t get heard, attend the convention to help this association, sit in on committee meetings, attend the social events and visit with friends from other affiliates. Volunteer for committees and get involved with this great association. It takes all of us to keep us going. New for this year will be the Youth awards being presented in March instead of July, the youth will still have their national convention and officer elections in July during the world show, plans are being made to have them on the fairgrounds so more youth can be invited to attend and get involved.

For some more great news, by the time you read this, the new computer software program should be fully functional, and the first new registration certificates will be printed. We have all been patiently waiting for the new software but now it is a reality. We started a technology drive to help with the cost of a new laser printer to print the new certificates, and anything to keep us moving along in this technology driven society. A big thank you to the Palomino Heritage Foundation for helping with the drive. The office will still need a few items and the technology drive is designed to help with the additional expenses. If you would like to donate, there is a link on the website where if you click, it will take you right to where you can help by donating to the Palomino Horse Breeders of America, your organization.

If your membership is due or if you have someone wanting to join, you can do that directly from the website; www.palominohba.com/membership/membership/

Please update your information if something has changed, you do not want to miss any exciting and important information from PHBA. Here is the link to take care of that : www.palominohba.com/membership/address-change-form/ Hope to See Everyone in Tulsa in March

46 | INSTRIDE EDITION | JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023
JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2023| INSTRIDE EDITION | 47

It’s January and for most of us that means cold, snow, mud, and frustratingly short days – the entire month feels like a Monday.

There are a few days sprinkled in, however, like today in Nebraska, where the sun is shining and warm on your face, the horses are napping in the pasture and we are reminded, the hard work we are putting in now will pay off this summer as we enter show and futurity season.

January is a great time to take advantage of PHBA’s registration special. It’s only $60 for yearlings and $80 for 2-year-olds and up for a limited time. Membership rules apply. January is also a great time to renew your memberships to be certain you will have all of your paperwork in order as the first shows of the year approach.

This year is the 40th Anniversary of the Palomino World Show and the Amateur Executive Board has been working on some exciting and fun activities for all of our members. While we are still working out the details, we do wish to entice everyone with the idea of an Open Showmanship event that may include costumes and celebrity judges. Mums the word, but we promise you won’t want to miss this opportunity to show off your creativity, skill in the show pen and the spectators are guaranteed to have a great time. Look for an upcoming announcement with more information.

If you’ve never attended the Palomino World Show or it’s been awhile, I cannot encourage you strongly enough to come to Springfield and show with us! The Palomino World is an incredibly fun World Show with family activities, classes for everyone, a Street Party and hamburger feed, added money and incredible people and horses.

And lastly, the Palomino National Convention will be here before we know it! The PHBA National Convention is central to the governance and survival of PHBA. Rule change proposals are discussed and voted on during this time, strategic planning is done and it is a great place to learn how associations function and meet people passionate about the horse show industry and growth of our “golden family.”

It’s not too early to think about World Show

Plenty planned for youth members in 2023

Happy New Year everybody. I don’t know about you, but I am so excited to see what 2023 has in store for us. As we all slowly bring ourselves out of hibernation and begin preparing for the upcoming show season, I’d love to share some of what the Youth Board has been up to. If you haven't already seen it on the PHBA-Youth Facebook page, we have started a Youth Spotlight series. The goal being to recognize the amazing kids that show in our organization and allow people to get to know them a little more. I encourage everyone to check it out and see if you can learn something you maybe didn’t know about our youth exhibitors. If you are a PHBA-Y member and would like to be part of the series and haven’t heard from us, please reach out and let us know! You can message me on Facebook or my email is listed on the PHBA website.

Thanks to two generous sponsors, our Leadline class at the PHBA World Show will be offered at a reduced price once again this year. It is always so fun to watch this class and cheer for the kids. Please pass the word and invite anyone you think might be interested. The future of our organization starts with these youngsters.

I am so excited to announce that PHBA has been accepted into the Midwest Horse Fair. This is the biggest all-breed equestrian event in the nation and is an amazing opportunity to advertise and gain potential sponsors and vendors. This will be my first year going and I hope to represent in the Grand March. We will also be putting together a demonstration to further showcase our amazing association and everything it has to offer.

This spring will be the PHBA National Convention. It’s held in Tulsa March 8-11. During convention there’s an awards ceremony for the Open and Amateur’s to receive year end awards from the prior year. The youth have always had to wait until July to receive their awards at the Palomino Youth World Show. Well, this year for the first time, the youth will be receiving their awards alongside the Open and Amateurs at the National Convention in March. We are so excited about this. Not only will it bring more unity and recognition but we get our awards several months sooner. Hope to see many of you there…it’s always a great time and we have fun activities planned for the youth.

Check out the PHBA website and/or the PHBA-Y Facebook page closer to time for more details.

Ellexx Maxwell

Ohio competitor says horse world is like family and each show feels like a reunion

To 22-year-old Ellexxah Maxwell, of West Mansfield, Ohio, the horse world is family and every time she goes to a show it’s like a family reunion.

With parents (Brent and Melissa Maxwell) who have been involved with horses since Ellexxah was born, she really grew up in the industry. And she’s had more than her share of success in the show arena. But these days, her goal is just to have fun.

“I’ve been learning new events and really just starting to go show with no real goal set in mind,” she explained. “I have a passion for the horse and for the industry. We might be working but there is always fun to be had at a horse show and that’s what makes it such a big draw for so many.”

But that’s not always been the case. Ellexxah started showing Lead Line at the age of 2. From 2004 to 2011 she showed The Cookie Baker in Small Fry events and also had the opportunity to show many horses owned by the clients of her parents.

From 2011 to 2020 Ellexxah’s show partner was Zips Bossy Chip, a bay mare sired by UK Mito Boss out of Susies Fancy Chip. Together they earned six American

Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) All-Around Youth titles; two National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) World Championships; three AQHA Reserve World Championships; two NSBA Reserve World Championships and six Quarter Horse Congress Championships. They are the AQHA all- time highest point earning youth and overall horse with 20-plus year end national titles.

Earning the honor of being the AQHA all-time highest point earning youth with Zips Bossy Chip was really special to Ellexxah.

“I can’t even describe the feeling,” she said. “The

Text Corrine S. Borton Photos Jeff Kirkbride & Cody Parmenter

record holder before was Harley D Zip, a horse that was my idol growing up. I remember how excited I was at the (AQHA) Youth World Show one year after he’d won the Western Riding that I got to pet him. I couldn’t stop talking about it for weeks.”

From 2019 to 2022 Maxwell showed Best Cowboy Around, a chestnut gelding by How Bout This Cowboy and out of Only The Best Chocolate in AQHA all-around events, earning the 2021 AQHA All-Around Amateur title and the 2021 High-Point Amateur Showmanship award.

For the past few years Maxwell has been having a blast showing Crank Up The Band (Carl), a 2008 palomino gelding by Reminic N Dunit out of Smart Dolly Olena in Showmanship, Horsemanship, Equitation, Ranch Riding, Ranch Trail and Ranch Rail.

“He actually belongs to one of my really close friends and when she went off to college and didn’t have time for him I ended up leasing him,” Ellexxah explained. “Now she’s off adulting and I get to keep playing with her awesome pony.”

Carl has a unique personality.

“He will sometimes decide he doesn’t want to ride that day so he will stand dead still when you go in the stall,” Maxwell said. “I mean he doesn’t even blink. We make fun of him thinking if he doesn’t move we wont see him.”

Ellexxah’s newest project is a Unforgettably His, a 9-year-old gray gelding by Unforgettable out of Uptown Detail. He was owned by a friend who overheard Maxwell was looking to replace her hunter partner after her family had to put him down in 2020, and suggested Ellexxah come try him.

“He was one of the coolest horses I’d ever ridden and I knew he was coming home with me,” she said.

They are competing in Showmanship, Equitation, Hunter Hack, Working Hunter and Equitation Over Fences.

“He was originally named Bucket because he likes to flip his buckets,” she explained. “I did change it to Beckett but my dad still calls him Bucket from time to time.”

Ellexxah really likes to try new classes but she says Showmanship will always be her favorite event.

“I love it because you can show off your personality the way you can’t in any other class,” she said. “The trick to it is really getting to know your partner. It’s like dancing, it isn’t pretty if one of you steps on the other’s toes.”

Maxwell attended Ohio Connections Academy for both elementary and high school and she participated in martial arts, earning a black belt when she was just 12. After high school she enrolled in classes at the University of Phoenix and earned an associate’s degree in arts with a specialization in business management in 2021. She is a professional bander and operates her own banding business traveling the AQHA circuit. She is deeply involved in the industry, holding memberships in the Ohio Quarter Horse Association as well as the Southern, Eastern and Northern Quarter Horse associations and the NSBA. She even met her boyfriend of five years, Nick Furlong at a show.

“We met during the Youth World at the hotel pool because we both missed making the finals the day before,” she said.

Growing up in the show horse industry has provided with Ellexxah with unlimited opportunity to learn from the best.

“There have been so many people who have influenced me during my show career,” she said. “So many pieces of advice, coaching, words of wisdom, and experience shared to me by trainers and exhibitors alike.”

Avy Jacobs

Georgia competitor teams with Spook Royale to find her passion and success in Ranch classes

Photos Shane Rux, The Paper Horse Company & Selah Heard

It’s hard to believe that not so long ago, 13-year-old Avery Jacobs, of Valdosta,

“That was when I was little,” she explained. “But then I went to a friend’s birthday party and decided that horses weren't so bad. After that I started riding at my grandmother's therapeutic riding center in Valdosta and my parents found me a trainer in Baker, Florida.”

There sure weren’t any traces of fear remaining when Avery competed last year at the American Quarter Horse Association’s Ranch Horse Championships at the Lazy E Arena in Guthrie, Oklahoma, winning the Rookie Youth Ranch Riding with Spook Royale (Caboose).

Even more impressive is the fact that Avery had only been showing the 2014 sorrel gelding by Smart Spook and out of Chex My Royale Booty, for about six months.

Avery has been working with Georgia trainer Jonathan Performance Horses, for a few years now. Her parents, Daniel and Whitney Jacobs had instructed Himes to be on the lookout for just the right partner for their only child.

“Mr. Jonathan called my dad one day last January and asked how quickly he could get me down to Tampa Florida,” Avery explained. “It was the last day of the Gold Coast Gulf Coast

(AQHA) Series. We got down there and went to see Caboose. When I first started riding him I had a lot of trouble because I had never ridden a horse like him. I eventually got the hang of it. My dad asked me if I liked him. I said ‘yes’ and before I knew it Caboose was my horse.”

It didn’t take long for them to become a team. Jacobs quickly learned how to work cows, do a sliding stop and execute Reining spins.

At the Sudden Impulse Futurity last year, Caboose and Jacobs earned two Reserve Championships, (in L1 Youth Ranch Riding and L1 Youth Ranch Trail). Then they won the Rookie Youth Ranch Riding at the American Quarter Horse Association’s Versatility Ranch Horse World Championship and the Novice Youth Ranchmanship at the American Ranch Horse Association (ARHA) World Championship Show.

“Since I have gotten Caboose we have had some lows and some very big highs. I am very thankful that he is so patient with me as I have learned more and more,” Jacobs said. “I am very excited to see what the future holds for us.”

On this page Avery is pictured (top) with her show steer, Mouse. Below that she is with her parents, Daniel and Whitney Jacobs at the Sugar Bowl in 2020; and riding in the Florida Ranch Horse Club’s Youth Herd Work.

Jacobs didn’t always show in Ranch classes. In fact, she got her competitive start showing AGR Krymsun Secret (Frank), a 2004 sorrel gelding by One Hot Krymsun and out of Zipped Michelle, in Alabama Open Horseman's Association events under the guidance of Florida trainer Marita Tunnage. They attended their first state show when Jacobs was just 7 years old and came home with a Top 10 in Showmanship.

“After that I started showing AQHA shows and I haven’t looked back,” she said.

Jacobs and Frank competed in Small Fry classes from 2017 to 2018, when she started showing My Dream Loper (Frosty), a 2007 gray mare by Lazy Loper and out of Short Faded Dream, under the guidance of Alabama trainer Ashley Bame. With Frosty Jacobs competed at her first National Snaffle Bit Association World Championship Show and Quarter Horse Congress, placing in the Top 15 in Small Fry classes at both shows.

“I loved that mare even though she was very stubborn,” Jacobs said. “I continued showing her in Youth All-Around events through the end of 2021. We didn't click quite as well in the loping classes though, and I decided it was time to make a change. Both Frosty and my trainer made me a better rider and instilled a work ethic in me that continues on in everything I do.”

Frank is still living at the Jacobs’ place in Georgia, as is Skip Ce Sky (Sky) a 2014 sorrel mare by Skip Ce Wilco and out of Designed In Red, that Avery describes as her “go-to trail horse.”

Jacobs first attended Antioch Elementary School in Crestview, Florida. For fifth grade and the first half of sixth grade she was home schooled before her family moved to Georgia. She is currently a seventh grade student at Lowndes Middle School in Valdosta.

When she is not riding or at a show you will often find Avery taking part in the Lowndes Middle FFA chapter.

“I am an officer and have a show steer, Mouse, that I have raised and trained,” she said. “I am also very active in the youth group at my congregation.”

Understanding the guidelines and process can help you cope with the loss of an equine partner

The word euthanasia was first used in the early 17th century to indicate an easy death, having originated from the Greek eu (well) and thanatos (death). We all dread the day we will lose a special horse, but the opportunity to make the transition “easy” can bring peace in a tragic situation.

The American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP) Guidelines for Equine Euthanasia are available at aaep.org/euthanasia-guidelines. These not only guide veterinarians on how to euthanize a horse but also when. The criteria provided can assist you in making the difficult decision to say goodbye to your beloved animal.

Having the option to euthanize is a special gift, but deciding whether to do so can be extremely difficult. By objectively reviewing the guidelines with your veterinarian, you can determine if your animal has a good quality of life, a life worth living. A delayed death is a welfare concern if he or she is in pain or suffering from an unmanageable condition. The goal is to be on the lookout for signs from your horse that euthanasia is the most humane option.

A horse should not have to endure:

especially helpful in remote settings or when an equine veterinarian cannot reach a catastrophically injured horse immediately.

Captive bolt to the brain. Most vets use a secondary step after this technique, such as pithing or exsanguination. Intrathecal lidocaine (a common anesthetic injected in this case into the spinal canal) with the horse under general anesthesia. This technique has been used in developing countries or remote settings and is gaining in popularity where barbiturates are no longer allowed. It begins with administration of an IV injection

By objectively reviewing the guidelines with your veterinarian, you can determine if your animal has a good quality of life, a life worth living.

so the horse lies down and becomes unconscious. Then the vet inserts a needle behind the horse’s ears until he or she reaches cerebrospinal fluid around the spinal cord, then injects a large syringe of lidocaine.

• Continuous or unmanageable pain from a chronic or incurable condition.

• A medical condition or surgical procedure that introduces a poor prognosis for a good quality of life.

• Continuous analgesic medication and/or box stall confinement for pain relief for the rest of his or her life.

• An unmanageable medical or behavioral condition that renders him or her a hazard to him/herself or handlers.

Understanding the Process

During the euthanasia procedure, follow your veterinarian’s advice to keep yourself safe, as horses can lie down abruptly and move their limbs even after brain death has occurred. You might prefer to have the vet tech or an experienced friend hold the horse for you. Your veterinarian will determine the safest location on the property for the procedure and transport after, as appropriate. He or she will also determine whether to administer sedation to keep your horse calm.

The AAEP deems the following euthanasia techniques acceptable by properly trained personnel:

Lethal dose of barbiturate (pentobarbital) via intravenous (IV) injection. In some regions, carcass disposal options after euthanasia with barbiturates are limited and costly. Improper disposal of animal carcasses presents environmental, animal, and public health concerns.

Gunshot to the brain. This is a very fast technique that’s

Potassium chloride or magnesium sulfate with the horse under general anesthesia. The veterinarian begins the technique by administering an IV injection so the horse lies down and becomes unconscious. Then he or she administers a very concentrated solution to the horse, also in the vein.

Coping With Loss

You’ll likely go through a period of grieving after the euthanasia. Here are some ideas that might help you cope:

Talk to your veterinarian about what happened. You might have questions now, especially if you were fearful and stressed prior to the euthanasia. Don’t be afraid to ask, because the knowledge and understanding gained can provide closure that you did what was best for your horse.

Identify friends or family you’re comfortable talking to about the loss of your horse.

Search for a pet loss support group in your community or online.
