EDITORIAL Dear friends, The Institut français du Nigéria, through its different courses and artistic programmes, welcomes dialogue as well as cultural and linguistic exchanges. Our upcoming line-up of cultural programs will give you many opportunities to get familiar with the French language and French culture: the annual Francophonie Festival in March, the 4th edition of “Good France” which celebrates the excellence of French cuisine, the second edition of the animated movie workshop organized in partnership with the Goethe-Institut for the benefit of Nigerian studios and stakeholders and many more. This year’s cultural programme will highlight debate. Three internationally renowned French researchers (Thomas Piketty, Patrick Weil and Julia Cagé) will come to give a series of lectures in Nigeria. Last, but not least, June will be the month of music with “The world music day” and this year, for the first time will be open mic for Nigerian groups. Cher(e)s ami(e)s, L’Institut français du Nigéria, à travers son offre de cours et sa programmation artistique, est un lieu ouvert au dialogue et à la rencontre culturelle et linguistique. Notre programmation culturelle vous proposera en ce début d’année différents temps fort pour vous familiariser avec la langue française et la culture française: la traditionnelle semaine de la francophonie en mars, la quatrième édition de Goût de France, un événement mettant en avant l’excellence de la cuisine française, etc. Sans oublier le cinéma d’animation avec la seconde édition de l’atelier de professionnalisation organisé en partenariat avec le Goethe-Institut en direction des studios nigérians. Le débat d’idées sera particulièrement à l’honneur de la programmation culturelle. Trois chercheurs français de renommée internationale (Thomas Piketty, Patrick Weil, Julia Cagé) viendront donner plusieurs conférences au Nigéria. Juin, quant à lui, sera le mois de la « Fête de la musique » avec cette année une scène ouverte pour les groupes nigérians. Autant d’opportunités de vous accueillir et de parler français ! BITA KOLA / FRANCOPHONIE CLOSING CONCERT

SATURDAY, MARCH 24TH / 7PM - 10PM / INSTITUT FRANÇAIS DU NIGÉRIA Pour conclure cette semaine, l'Ambassade de Belgique au Nigéria en partenariat avec l'Institut français du Nigéria organisera un concert live. Bita Kola, ce groupe de Lagos, viendra spécialement à Abuja pour l’occasion. 14 musiciens seront sur scène: trompettes, saxophones, conga, piano, batterie, guitares ... et beaucoup d'énergie vous fera danser sur des rythmes afrobeat inspirés des airs de Fela Kuti. Soyez prêt pour notre dernier concert en plein air avant la saison des pluies ! Le restaurant Attiéké Republic sera ouvert toute la soirée dans notre jardin. To bring the festival to a close, the Belgian Embassy in Nigeria in partnership with the Institut français du Nigéria will organise a live concert. Bita Kola band, a band from Lagos, will especially come to Abuja for this occasion. 14 musicians will be on stage: trumpets, saxophones, conga, piano, drums, guitars, and a lot of energy will make you dance on afrobeat music inspired by Fela Kuti’s tunes. Be prepared for our last open-air concert before the rainy season! The Restaurant Attiéké Republic will be open all evening in our garden.

LIMCAF 2017 : EXHIBITION OF THE FRENCH EMBASSY “YOUNG TALENT AWARD” WINNER LIMCAF 2017 : EXPOSITION DU LAURÉAT DU « PRIX DE LA JEUNE CRÉATION » DE L’AMBASSADE DE FRANCE The eleventh Grand finale of LIMCAF (Life In My City Art Festival) was held in Enugu in October 2017. This festival was launched to promote young artists in the visual arts and to help them develop professionally. At this occasion, the French Embassy in Nigeria presented the “Young talent award” to Raji Bamidele Abdulgaffar, an artist based in Lagos. An exhibition of his more recent works will be organised in June in Abuja. En octobre 2017 se tenait à Enugu la onzième édition de la grande finale du LIMCAF (Life In My City Art Festival), festival créé afin de faire découvrir de nouveaux talents et d’accompagner la professionnalisation des jeunes artistes nigérians. À cette occasion, l'Ambassade de France au Nigéria a décerné le «Prix de la jeune création» à Raji Bamidele Abdulgaffar, artiste basé à Lagos. Une exposition de ses œuvres récentes sera organisée en juin à Abuja.

CINEMA ANIMATION WORKSHOP / ATELIER SUR LE CINÉMA D’ANIMATION FROM APRIL 9TH TO APRIL 15TH / VENTURE PARK, ABUJA

Under the Franco-German Cultural Fund Program, the Goethe-Institut and the Institut français du Nigéria will organise a second edition of the project on animation cinema. Two workshops will be facilitated by 2 professionals from Germany and France in Abuja and Lagos. It will give participants an opportunity to increase their technical skills and interact with experienced international professionals in developing their career prospects in Nigeria’s vibrant film industry. Dans le cadre du Fonds culturel Franco-allemand, une deuxième édition du projet autour du cinéma d’animation sera organisée en partenariat avec le Goethe-Institut à destination des studios nigérians. Deux ateliers d'animation seront encadrés par deux professionnels allemand et français à Abuja et Lagos. Ces ateliers donneront aux participants l'occasion d'améliorer leurs compétences techniques et d'interagir avec des professionnels expérimentés internationaux afin de développer leurs perspectives de carrière dans l'industrie cinématographique animée du Nigeria.

FILM SCREENING / COMING SOON TO ABUJA The Bureau: within the DGSE, The Bureau is a department in charge of training the most undercover agents of the French secret services. Posted to key locations all around the world and living under false identities for years, their mission is to identify potential informants. Le Bureau des légendes : Au sein de la DGSE, opère le Bureau des légendes, département chargé de former les agents des services secrets français. Envoyés dans des endroits clés partout dans le monde et vivant sous de fausses identités depuis des années, leur mission est d'identifier les sources potentielles.

QUARTERLY TALKS / DEBAT D’IDÉES Under the quarterly talks programme, a series of lectures will be organised in Abuja and other cities in Nigeria. Specific communication will be done later. Dans le cadre de notre programme de débats d’idées, plusieurs chercheurs français donneront des conférences dans plusieurs villes du Nigéria. Les lieux et dates feront l’objet d’une communication spécifique.

PATRICK WEIL

FROM MAY 14TH TO MAY 20TH Patrick Weil is a French historian and political scientist. He is a senior research fellow at the CNRS (National Center for Scientific Research) and at the Centre for the social history of the 20th century at the University of Paris 1. His research focuses on comparative citizenship, immigration law, history and constitutional law. For several years, he has been a visiting professor at Yale Law School. Patrick Weil est un politologue et historien français. Il est directeur de recherche au Centre National de Recherche Scientifique (CNRS), rattaché au Centre d'Histoire Sociale du XXe siècle à l'Université Paris 1. Ses recherches portent sur le droit comparé de la citoyenneté et de l'immigration. Depuis plusieurs années, il intervient en qualité de professeur invité au sein de la Yale Law School.

THOMAS PIKETTY

FROM JUNE 12TH TO JUNE 17TH Thomas Piketty is a French economist whose work focuses on wealth and income inequality. He is a professor at the School for Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences (EHESS), associate chair at the Paris School of Economics and Centennial professor at the International Inequalities Institute, which is part of the London School of Economics. Piketty is the author of the best-selling book “Capital in the Twenty-First Century” (2013) which emphasises the themes of his work on wealth concentrations and distribution over the past 250 years.

Thomas Piketty est un économiste français, directeur d'études à l’École des hautes études en sciences sociales (EHESS) et professeur à l'Ecole d'économie de Paris. Il est spécialiste de l’étude des inégalités économiques, en particulier dans une perspective historique et comparative, et auteur du best-seller « Le Capital au XXIe siècle”.

JULIA CAGÉ

FROM JUNE 12TH TO JUNE 17TH Julia Cagé is a French economist specialising in development economics, political economy, and economic history. She holds a Master’s degree from the Paris School of Economics and obtained a PhD in Economics at Harvard University. Her research focuses on the economy of European and African media. In 2015 as a media analyst, she published “Saving the media: Capitalism, crowdfunding and democracy”. Julia Cagé est une économiste française spécialiste d'économie du développement, d'économie politique et d'histoire économique. Elle est titulaire d'un doctorat de l'université de Harvard et est professeure d'économie à Sciences Po. Ses recherches portent sur l'économie des médias européens et africains. Elle a publié en 2015 "Sauver les médias: capitalisme, financement participatif et démocratie".
