SPREAD YOUR

ITS PROSPECTUS 2022-2023

THE CONCEPT Launched in 2019, the Spread Your Wings campaign, is characterised by origami birds, which depict the journey embarked by each student before starting their career. The origami birds symbolise ITS students and alumni. Each paper fold of the bird signifies a newly acquired knowledge until the paper bird is formed and is ready to fly off, thus marking the start of the students’ career. As part of their studies, ITS students may follow an international internship, which may be carried out in a country of their choice. Additionally, a number of ITS alumni also choose to pursue their careers outside the Maltese Islands. This led to the creation of the Spread Your Wings concept and is what rendered this concept so close to the Institute’s core.

WELCOME By The Chairman of the Board of Governors Dear Students, I would like to extend my warm welcome to all of you. It is a pleasure to see that you have chosen the Institute of Tourism Studies to Spread your Wings onto a career within the hospitality and tourism industry. Tourism, as you will see, is one of the most exciting, dynamic, and rewarding of industries, an industry that is resilient and recovers quickly after big challenges, as we are seeing today. CARLO MICALLEF Chairman – Board of Governors

ITS PROSPECTUS 2022-2023

Although the Tourism industry has faced unprecedented challenges in the past two years, Tourism is quickly getting back to normal

pre-covid operations. By the time you graduate, the tourism and hospitality industry would not only be stronger, but even better and more diversified than ever before. The Ministry of Tourism and the Malta Tourism Authority announced a ten-year strategic plan last year with the goal of taking Malta and Gozo’s tourism and hospitality industries to the next level. The target of this plan is to develop a more sustainable tourism model for our Islands, by attracting better quality tourism with more diversification of geographic tourism source markets, the development of new tourism niches and segments, and

a better spread of tourist arrivals throughout the year. ITS is a crucial link in Malta’s tourism industry chain, and it has a very important role in this new strategy. Today, more than ever, the industry is asking for the best trained personnel to deliver the best experience possible to the higher spending, year-round tourist that Malta and Gozo will be attracting. During the times of the pandemic, while ensuring that enrolled students had the best support to continue their studies, as well as personal support where needed, the team at ITS, including the Board of Governors, Management, Academics, and staff continued planning the future for this Educational Institute by preparing and launching the ITS strategic plan up to 2025. This plan has the objective to establish ITS as one of the top European Institutions in the educational

field of Tourism and Hospitality attracting students from the Maltese Islands and from around the World. Our objective is excellence to prepare our students to a rewarding career in Tourism. I augur all current and new students studying at ITS a productive and exciting year ahead. Take charge of your dreams and Spread Your Wings!

By the time you graduate, the tourism and hospitality industry would not only be stronger, but even better and more diversified than ever before.

WELCOME By The Chief Executive Officer Dear Students, In the last two years, the Tourism industry was hard hit, but now there is great appetite for travelling after so many months of lockdowns and border closures. In fact, the Tourism and Hospitality Industry is recovering from the effects of the pandemic at a faster rate than anyone would have expected. Once again, we will be seeing our industry grow and re-establish itself as one on the main economic sectors in the world. PIERRE FENECH Chief Executive Officer

ITS PROSPECTUS 2022-2023

Our students realised this and grabbed the opportunities to educate and train themselves in the various fields within

the Tourism industry. This will enable them to grab the career opportunities that are and soon will be available. In fact, as an Educational Institute, the past two academic years, against all odds, saw a notable increase in the number of students. More than ever before, we are witnessing interest in our students both locally and internationally with great opportunities being offered to both current and past students. This is thanks to the dedication of all our academic and administrative staff who work hard to constantly challenge our students to achieve higher quality levels. We are proud of all our students who year after year

receive praise from our industry partners all over the world. This year we will be achieving another milestone in our mission to transform the Institute of Tourism Studies from a leading Tourism and Hospitality Institute in Malta, into a Mediterranean hub of excellence in the provision of studies in the sector. We will be commencing works on the new campus in Smart City Malta scheduled to open in 2025. This campus will be bigger and more equipped to meet the ever-increasing demand from the industry. It will also help in meeting the demands of international students who would like to study with us. Since its foundation thirtyfive years ago, the Institute managed to produce some of the top talented people, who contributed a lot towards the development of the Tourism and Hospitality Industry over the years both locally and

internationally. This shows that the Institute transmits the knowledge, skills and competencies necessary to reach success in your future work life, and through which you can continue in the footsteps of your predecessors. The removal of travel restriction and the return to normality means that all those international students wishing to join any of the courses on offer in this prospectus to further their studies in the field of Hospitality and Tourism can do so without any restrictions.

We are proud of all our students who year after year receive praise from our industry partners all over the world.

Whilst wishing you the very best of luck in your studies, I look forward to personally meet you on the campus of this prestigious institute.

ALUMNI & STUDENTS TESTIMONIALS

WARREN MIZZI General Manager at Brittania Tours The Institute of Tourism Studies was the perfect place to set me off on the success ladder in the hospitality and tourism industry. Being both a practical and theoretical institute, it equipped me with everything I needed to build a successful career.

ITS PROSPECTUS 2022-2023

Thanks to my studies at the ITS and experience gained through working placements in Malta and abroad that were part of my course, I was one of the very few successful applicants that was recruited by Emirates Airline at the age of 22. I have recently joined one of Malta’s biggest and most successful Tour Operators, Britannia Tours as their new General Manager. It is also good to know that I am not the only ITS graduate working at Britannia Tours. We have an ITS student working in our Product Development team, doing a brilliant job! For those looking to build a successful career in the hospitality and tourism sector, whether in Malta or abroad, I highly recommend the Institute of Tourism Studies.

GEORGE ATTARD Junior Sous Chef at Bahia My personal journey in the culinary world kick started with enrolling for the Food Preparation and Production Diploma offered by the Institute of Tourism Studies. The three year course taught me not only essential cooking methods but also the invaluable skills of creativity, time management

and discipline, which were crucial in the moulding of my professional career. The knowledge obtained at ITS prepared me for the working world both locally and internationally. In fact, following my studies I successfully secured positions at some of the top restaurants and hotels in Malta, and was fortunate to work at the one star Michelin and five AA award “The Kitchin” restaurant (Edinburgh, United Kingdom). Since then I have also competed in a number of international competitions (Italy, Turkey and Scotland) and won the silver medal in Malta’s Chef of the Year 2020 competition. More recently I had the opportunity to work at Cail Bruich (Glasgow, United Kingdom) with a team led by Head Chef Lorna McNee. During my time there, the restaurant achieved a Michelin Star in Glasgow after 18 years. At present, I am the Junior Sous Chef at the one Michelin star

Bahia restaurant (Attard, Malta), as I continue to learn and develop under the lead of the admirable Chef Tyrone Mizzi. Needless to say, I am forever grateful to ITS and its seasoned mentors for the passion and determination they instilled in me at the very beginning of my career as professional Chef.

DENISE CASSAR Tourist Guide Professionalism, diversity and support are but a few words to describe the incredible Institute of Tourism Studies.

I enrolled for the Higher National Diploma in Tourist Guiding back in 2019 with a vision to keep expanding my knowledge about the Maltese Islands and how to properly welcome tourists to it. The reality exceeded my expectations by far, and I am now proudly working as a licensed tourist guide whilst also forming part of a team who do outsourced, museumrelated work in terms of upgrading such spaces with technological concepts - case in point, the new augmented reality museum hosted within the MCC in Valletta. ITS truly is an ideal place to spread your wings and learn new skills in a practical way. I have no doubt, that no matter which course one choses, they will land themselves in great positions somewhere down the line and be as proud as I am to call themselves an ITS alumni. I had the best time studying at ITS and I will be back soon for the MA in Heritage Interpretation! S P R E A D YO U R W I N G S

L I V I N G I N M A LTA THE MEDITERRANEAN LIFESTYLE Malta is a small island in the middle of the Mediterranean. Apart from the main island, there are two other habitable islands – Gozo and Comino – both are a short ferry ride away. Malta is a bilingual country with Maltese and English being the nation’s two official languages. The people are very friendly and warm, making you feel at home immediately. The island has the perfect temperate climate with an average of 3oo days of sunshine per year.

ITS PROSPECTUS 2022-2023

MOUTH-WATERING CUISINE The Maltese cuisine is quite diverse as it takes its influence from various other cuisines, mainly Italian cuisine as well as Spanish, French and British cuisines. The restaurant scene in the Maltese islands offers a mix of several cuisines from around the world. However, there are ample eateries which serve their own version of traditional Maltese specialties, namely rabbit stew, bragjoli (beef olives) and timpana (baked macaroni). A popular snack is the pastizzi, a small boat-shaped pastry filled with either ricotta cheese or mushy peas.

THE ISLAND LIFE There are various activities one may do in Malta. You can experience the islands’ rich culture and history by visiting one of the world’s oldest buildings in Ġgantija, or the fortified cities of Mdina and Valletta. The island is also abundant in beautiful beaches, be they large and public or small and deserted. You can also enjoy a variety of sports and outdoor activities including hiking, biking, rock climbing, scuba diving, parasailing and windsurfing. Malta is also known for its array of nightclubs and bars. Throughout the year, Malta also holds several festivals which host many world-renowned artists. Malta is only a few hours away from several major European cities, such as Rome and Paris, with its airport providing direct flight connections.

Ruth Attard Certificate in Travel & Tourism I have been interested in tourism and hospitality since secondary school and coming to ITS helped me realise that the tourism industry is indeed the career for me. Lectures at ITS are very interesting and I enjoy every second of my time on campus. Apart from the academic aspect at ITS, I also managed to make a lot of new friends. In the next couple of years, after I finish my diploma, I would be interested in reading for a Higher National Diploma in Tourist Guiding followed by a Master of Arts in Heritage Interpretation. Jason Degiorgio Food & Beverage Director at The Westin Dragonara Resort I was born and raised in a family where my father and grandfather were both chefs. During my childhood, they gave me the opportunity to work with them and encouraged me to keep the tradition within the family. Today, 30 years later, I must admit that they managed successfully. My career started at 15 years of age as a summer student which enticed me to continue my studies at the Institute of Tourism Studies where I graduated at the age of 20.
