EDITOR’S IT LIST My skin does not require a lot of setting powder, so I use it just where I need it the most: my forehead and chin. I need the powder to blur imperfections without looking cakey, and the Loose Setting Powder from Kevyn Aucoin does the job well. One of the standout accessories this season are definitely hats in various styles, from military inspired to wide-brimmed and floppy. I love this Bucket Oversize Hat from Mango (£17.99), which is a great affordable option to approach this trend. Having a cup of coffee in the morning is one of my favourite moments of the day. I used to drink it from mugs, but once I bought a set of cups & saucers, I never looked back! This one from Seletti wears TOILETPAPER collection is one of the coolest I’ve ever seen (shop at amara.com). I love trying out different hair products and finding ways to minimise my usage of plastic in everyday life. I really enjoy Rescue My. Hair Pollution Patrol Shampoo Bar (available at beautybay.com, £13.95), which is free of harsh ingredients, gently revitalises hair and removes any build up of pollutants. My favourite spring / summer accessory without a doubt is sunglasses. I have a face shape that suits most styles and I like to experiment every season, but I often come back to aviators—such a classic! Geneva Sunglasses, Dune London, £35.

CULT CULT CANDY COSMETICS—a makeup brand that has inclusivity at the hear t of it—was founded by a motherchild duo Angie and Jazmin Adams.

Angie, a former drummer of all-girl rock band Fluffy, is now a qualified homeopath and the owner of children’s clothing brand Question Everything.

CANDY COSME Jazmin, who does not identify as either male or female, is a film and ar t student at the Brit School as well as a musician. They are the inspiration behind Cult Candy Cosmetics and run the online marketing and creative direction. Jazmin’s large social media following in addition to their strong presence in the cult and alternative makeup scene in the UK proved to be great assets to the brand.

We asked Angie and Jazmin to describe their ordinary day, their creative process and what sets Cult Candy Cosmetics apar t. HOW DID CULT CANDY COSMETICS START AND WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO CREATE YOUR PRODUCT LINE?

TICS Angie: We had an offer from an investor to create a cosmetics brand into which we could bring both our experiences and exper tise. We were really excited to have the oppor tunity to realise our vision! We had to work with a few suppliers in sampling as we wanted to make sure we got the quality and pigments that would be the benchmark for Cult Candy. It’s more difficult to get

T

deep and bright colours with vegan makeup, but we hit there and we are very happy with what we’ve managed to create.

Jazmin: I’ve always been a huge makeup enthusiast and wanted to have some products that came straight from my head. I had always wanted to create those products that were perfect in my mind as I always felt that finding a perfect and interesting product was hard for me and people with similar interests to my own. And there really isn’t enough out there.

WHAT DO YOU THINK DIFFERENTIATES CULT CANDY COSMETICS FROM OTHER BRANDS?

Angie: Firstly, it’s about individuality. This is what we stand for! Being brave enough to be yourself and feeling comfor table in your own skin in a way that makes you feel happy. Jazmin: Having a strong sense of individuality has always been important to me. It was hard when I was younger, but now I feel I’ve broken through that, and my individuality inspires others, which feels really good. Also very impor tantly, we are a vegan and cruelty-free brand. Angie: We are also a cult beauty brand. I think a cult product is a product that doesn’t fit into mainstream ideals and star ts with a smaller and very devoted following, and when that product filters into the mainstream it doesn’t compromise on its original ideals. Jazmin: I think many makeup brands have really f lourished and become cult brands as people have been searching for brands that think more out of the box than your standard mainstream beauty brand. Society is changing and you can’t put a label on beauty anymore. There is a demand for cult beauty. ARE THERE MORE PROS OR CONS OF WORKING WITH A FAMILY MEMBER?

Angie: I’d say we are quite close and have a lot of similar interests, which makes things easier, but we do bicker a bit when we are both stressed and have a lot to do! I love working with Jazmin as they are so creative, have brilliant ideas and are so driven. They’re the inspiration behind this brand. 38 #INSPO Issue 12 | Summer 2020

Jazmin: It can be hard sometimes, but I wouldn’t want to work constantly with anyone else, I don’t think. Working that much with anyone par ticularly sharing a creative project is bound to be tricky, especially as I like to be in control of my creative projects! CAN YOU SHARE SOME OF THE THINGS THAT YOU TAKE INTO CONSIDERATION WHEN CREATING NEW PRODUCTS? WHAT IS YOUR CREATIVE PROCESS?

Angie: A lot of work goes into each product, and the time frame is around 8 months from star t to release. Yes, we are involved in everything. It star ts with choosing the colours and finish, and then the formulation star ts. The first lab samples come back after around 8-12 weeks and we go from there. We keep making amendments until we are happy with the formula and payoff. At the same time, we are working on packaging design.

We collaborate with upand-coming young ar tist we find on Instagram. There’s so much talent out there! Once we are happy with both the makeup and packaging, we approve them and the final production begins. That takes around 16 weeks.

Jazmin: I love creating the moods, vibes and themes of the palettes as well as of each product and then seeing that come to life. Sometimes the products we plan on creating aren’t always my style, but I like to submerge myself into them and think, if this was my style, what would my ideal palette be.... I love looking for the ar tists to work with on my ideas, finding the shades and coming up with the shade names. It’s a really fun process and it always has to be perfect and on the theme. All the small details make it what it is and I’m about all those small details! WHAT IS AN ORDINARY DAY FOR YOU LIKE?

Angie: On an ordinary day I star t working at 9 a.m. Besides Cult Candy, I have a clothing brand that I also work on. Jazmin and I normally find a time in the day when we can get together, discuss and work on the current projects at Cult Candy. On the weekends we have more time to discuss, brainstorm and exchange ideas for future projects. This is the most fun par t of the job! I’m also a mum of 3, so I’m always juggling work with home life. It’s busy but I love both, and it’s really amazing that I can

also work with my kids. I have other creative projects I’m involved in with my other son and daughter, so our home is always busy and bustling with creation!

Jazmin: I divide my time between Cult Candy and my music career, which has been getting busier for me. Depending on the day, I’m at the studio, working on Cult Candy or at home working on new ideas. ARE THERE ANY NEW PRODUCT LAUNCHES COMING THIS YEAR?

Angie and Jazmin: Yes, we are planning some gorgeous collections this year. We are hoping to release a new palette and lipsticks this spring and another larger collection in the summer. We are really excited. IS THERE ANY BEAUTY ADVICE YOU WOULD LIKE TO SHARE WITH OUR READERS?

Angie: Confidence. That’s what beauty is to me. Jazmin: Look how you want to look, don’t adhere to the beauty standards around you. If you think you look beautiful, that’s all that matters.

NUTRITION AND SKIN— IS THERE A LINK? They say that beauty comes from the inside. Can we really eat our way to beautiful skin? Consultant Dietician Sophie Medlin debunks the myths and gives facts about the link between nutrition and skin.

WHAT NUTRITIONAL DEFICIENCIES / LACK OF FOOD GROUP CAN CAUSE SKIN ISSUES? Many nutrient deficiencies show themselves in our skin quality. Only a varied diet that includes food from all food groups will provide us with all the nutrients we need for good skin health. With the popularisation of diets that eliminate food groups, we are seeing more nutritional deficiencies cropping up, so if you notice a change in your skin within a few months of making a significant dietary change, it is wor th looking at your diet for solutions.

TO WHAT EXTENT CAN OUR GUT BACTERIA AND DIGESTION INFLUENCE OUR SKIN? Research into the gut bacteria is still new, and we’re learning more all the time, but we cer tainly don’t have any conclusive answers about gut bacteria or digestion and common skin problems. That said, it is fair to assume that if your digestion isn’t good, your diet may be driving the skin problems, and your overall health may improve with dietary changes. HOW IMPORTANT IS OMEGA-3 RICH FOOD FOR OUR SKIN? Fat is essential for good skin health because it creates the barrier to protect our skin and stops it from drying out. Healthy fats like Omega-3 and monounsaturated fats that we get from

40 #INSPO Issue 12 | Summer 2020

avocado and olive oil are good for our skin, and people who follow a very low fat diet or try crash diets like juicing can often suffer from dry, irritated skin. CAN CHANGING OUR DIETS, FOR EXAMPLE, GOING GLUTEN FREE, IMPACT OUR SKIN? Any diet that restricts you from having a varied diet can impact your skin. You may notice a honeymoon period when you change your diet where your skin improves. This is likely to be because you are including more fruits and vegetables and cutting down on processed foods. In the longer term, restrictive diets can cause negative skin changes, so remember to listen to your body and take action.

IF THERE WAS A GOOD SKIN DIET, WHAT WOULD IT LOOK LIKE? WHAT WOULD YOU ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO EAT IN ORDER TO HAVE GREAT SKIN? The antioxidants and other compounds in brightly coloured fruits and vegetables are likely to improve skin health, as are healthy fats. As always, the best advice is to follow a Mediterranean style of eating for optimal overall health. Unfor tunately, despite what you might read or be sold, many people will struggle with skin problems regardless of what they eat or drink, and it can be very unhelpful to someone who is suffering with their skin to blame it on their diet or lifestyle.

DO WE REALLY NEED TO DRINK AT LEAST TWO LITRES OF WATER A DAY FOR HEALTHY SKIN? Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the levels of different salts in our blood in the normal range and suppor ts our body to f lush out products of metabolism and other factors of day to day life that can otherwise build up in our bodies. We need varying amounts of water depending on our size and our daily activities. Drinking enough water to keep your urine a pale yellow colour helps to reduce the chances of imbalances in our blood, which means that your body isn’t working hard to compensate for the lack of f luids. This allows your body to use vitamins for lower priority jobs, such as improving our skin quality. Being dehydrated generally makes our fine lines and wrinkles more apparent too, so that’s another reason to top up on the f luids!

DOES TAKING COLLAGEN OR HYALURONIC ACID SUPPLEMENTS ORALLY ACTUALLY WORK? Taking collagen or hyaluronic acid supplements are very unlikely to make any difference to the par ts of our skin / body where we want to see an effect. For a star t, they are broken down into their component par ts and digested like any other proteins or foods. They may then be reassembled into collagen or factors that our skin needs, but they’re not going to be directed to your crow’s feet or your forehead. Instead, they’ll go to places that your body prioritises as needing the additional suppor t, which is unlikely to be anything you can see.

Become your own facialist with Opatra’s Dermisonic—a portable easy to use beauty device, created to work in conjunction with facial creams and serums to promote cell renewal and deliver a healthy and hydrated complexion. The device is suitable for all skin types and tackles many different skin concerns, from acne to fine lines and wrinkles.

OPATRA DERMISONIC £895 Available at opatra.com

YOUR SKIN’S NEW BEST FRIEND

42 #INSPO Issue 12 | Summer 2020

Dermisonic has five powerful functions: • Ultrasonic therapy to firm the skin. • Vibration massage to help accelerate blood circulation and reduce pigmentation. • Ion+ setting to draw impurities and dead cells out from the skin. • Ion- to help skincare products penetrate the skin more effectively. • LED light therapy: Red light provides anti-ageing proper ties and accelerates skin repair while reducing inflammation. Blue light targets bacteria that contribute to acne and prevents breakouts. Green light reduces pigmentation, improves skin tone and aids melanin production.

Editor Jurga says: I was very excited to trial the Dermisonic device, because I was looking for something to take my skincare routine to the next level and this is it! My biggest concerns are skin hydration and fine lines, so I mostly use the red LED light with the Opatra AntiAgeing Collagen Mask (£235) when I want my skin to look its best the next day. The mask contains natural emollient oils and butters that improve skin’s elasticity and softness. Added collagen naturally firms the skin, and glycosaminoglycans regulate water loss from the skin and keeps it plump. For added effect, I like to use the Ultrasonic function together with the red LED light (you can use several functions at the same time), which lifts and tightens the skin by promoting collagen production. Opatra offers a range of colour-coded skincare products to use with the Dermisonic device to achieve maximum results; however, you can use your own products. Nourish is anti-ageing serum with Glycolic and Salicylic acid to leave your skin firm and hydrated (£299, 30ml). Brighten is a powerful antioxidant serum to help fight against environmental damage (£299, 30ml). Boost is a high-strength lightweight serum made with Hyaluronic acid that attracts moisture to the skin, leaving it plumped and hydrated (£299, 30 ml). 2020 Summer | Issue 12 #INSPO 43

TOP TIPS FOR GETTING GREAT SKIN APPLY YOUR MOISTURISER ON YOUR CHEST AND WORK UPWARDS, SO YOU DON’T FORGET YOUR NECK Because the skin on the neck is much thinner than the skin on the face, it loses elasticity before most other areas, making it one of the most noticeable signs of ageing. The neck has less of a suppor t structure than the face, which leaves it prone to wrinkles, sagging and uneven skin tone. Many people still neglect the neck area, despite having a thorough skincare regime for their face; therefore our necks aren’t benefiting from the same brightening, smoothing and softening action our faces are used to. It’s just as impor tant to protect the neck as it is the face, so treat them as one unit.

A renowned UK-trained consultant dermatologist and bestselling author of The Skincare Bible, Dr Anjali Mahto, shares her top rules to get your best skin ever.

INCLUDE FACIAL MASSAGE INTO YOUR REGIME

resveratrol) that can limit free radical damage caused by UV light.

There are a number of reasons our skin star ts to sag. Firstly, there is a reduction in the levels of collagen and elastin, which provide the skin’s structural suppor t. This occurs due to factors such as exposure to UV rays. Secondly, there is a loss of facial fat, the absence of which causes the face to droop. Lastly, there is reabsorption or loss of bone of the face over time and the skin can no longer tighten around it, resulting in sag.

There are skin tightening treatments, such as radiofrequency and ultrasound devices, that you can get done by a professional. Both methods are thought to promote collagen production over time resulting in reduction of skin laxity. These treatments are reasonably lowkey and have a shor t recovery time; however, multiple treatments are usually necessary and there can be temporary redness, swelling or numbness following a procedure. As always, talk to a professional before under taking any kind of new treatment.

Always wear an SPF, ideally of at least factor 30, and invest in antioxidant serums (e.g. vitamin C, vitamin E, ferulic acid,

KEEP YOUR TECH CLEAN Studies have shown touchscreens contain large numbers of bacteria on their surface. Pressure created by placing your phone against your cheek may result in activation of the oil producing glands. When this is combined with heat generated from the phone and bacteria present on the phone surface, imperfections may occur. If possible, try to use earphones and regularly wipe your smar tphone surface clean.

48 #INSPO Issue 12 | Summer 2020

USE YOUR SKINCARE IN THE RIGHT ORDER Multiple steps in skincare have been popularised by our Korean counterpar ts, but using multiple layers of products is probably not necessary for everyone. It may be helpful for those with extremely dry skin, but it is impor tant to bear in mind that the more products are used, the higher the chance of developing irritation or potentially even acne in susceptible skin types. Your skincare routine should reflect your skin type. I do recommend cleansing the skin twice a day— morning and evening. This can be in the form of a cream cleanser or micellar water. I also suggest exfoliating your skin as this helps to remove the upper layer of dead skins cells that sit on the skin—this improves the skin’s texture, age spots and uneven skin tone, which ultimately allows for better penetration of skincare products such as moisturisers or serums. Facial toners also have a number of positive roles in skincare. They can remove excess oils and makeup and balance the pH of your skin. Toners are useful for those with very oily or acne-prone skin. They should be applied to a cotton pad and wiped over the skin surface. Serums contain high concentrations of active ingredients and should be used before moisturisers. They are fast acting and lightweight. A few drops of serum can be places in the palms of the hands and pressed in the skin in a similar manner to using essence. Using serums on damp skin may increase their penetration as damp skin is more permeable to products.

KEEP YOURSELF HYDRATED I always recommend keeping yourself fully hydrated throughout the day, par ticularly during the warmer months or if you are suffering from sunburn, as this encourages fluid loss through the skin and can cause you to become very dehydrated. The skin also loses more water content as we sleep compared to the day time, which can be a problem for normal or dry skin types. Always ensure you moisturise before bed, as this is when your skin needs its extra moisture. 2020 Summer | Issue 12 #INSPO 49
