The latest news to inspire you to see the world
Finland named the happiest country in the world for the seventh time
It's been more than 10 years since the first-ever World Happiness Report was released in 2012 and since then, the world has experienced a pandemic, natural disasters, and wars—but the commitment to find out what makes people happy remains. Released on March 20, also World Happiness Day, the report is based on six key factors that impact happiness: social support, income, health, freedom, generosity, and the absence of corruption.
Number one on this year’s list is Finland which nabbed the top slot for the seventh year running, Denmark and Sweden follow, Australia ranked tenth, and the UK rounds out the top 20.
Notre Dame Cathedral set to reopen at the end of 2024
Following a devastating fire in 2019 and a painstaking five year restoration project, one of France's most popular tourist attractions, Notre Dame Cathedral, is slated to reopen in December. In February, the cathedral’s new spire was unveiled, (complete with the golden rooster and a cross), and restorers say if all goes to plan, the reopening of the 860-year-old monument will be a much-welcomed Christmas present.
Seine booksellers allowed to remain during the Paris Olympics
For 160 years, the iconic book stalls lining the banks of the Seine add charm to the French capital but as the city prepares to host the summer Olympics, the government questioned their presence. The initial decision was to demand they shut shop for the duration of the Games, but in a turnaround in late March, French president Emmanuel Macron intervened allowing them to trade as usual, describing the booksellers (bouquinistes) a "living heritage of the capital."
One of Italy’s most popular destinations gets an airport this summer
Salerno Costa d’Amalfi Airport is set to reopen in July. Built in 1926, it served as a military airport, flying school, and private airport over the years, which meant travellers to the Amalfi and Positano had to fly into Naples and use a train and bus to reach the infamous Italian coastline.
Before it reopens this summer, the airport will get a facelift while extensive works to a new passenger terminal will be completed by 2027.

Iguazú Falls
The largest waterfall system in the world sits on the border between Brazil and Argentina
INSPIRED TO VISIT ARGENTINA? Check out our tours here
Located in the northern Misiones province of Argentina, Iguazú Falls is one of UNESCO’s Seven Natural Wonders of the World, and is surrounded by 67,000 hectares of protected national park. Made up of 275 individual waterfalls, with the biggest and most famous being the Garganta del Diablo, or Devil’s Throat, both Argentina and Brazil play an important role in managing the conservation of the area. Most of the Falls lie on the Argentinian side of the border, where a well-maintained system of catwalks— engineered to have minimal impact on the landscape and the environment—allows visitors to get as close as possible to the water.
Parque Nacional Iguazú, on the Argentine side of the Falls, has maps of the park, walking trail guides, souvenirs, and historical information about the area. The park features a Jungle Ecological Train to minimise the human impact of tourism, which takes you from the Visitors’ Center to the Falls Station, where the Upper and Lower walking trails begin. There’s also a train to the Devil’s Throat, or you can take on the 1.2 km-walk instead.
And of course, this is Argentina and there’s always a tale attached. According to local Guarani legends, Iguazú Falls was created when the Serpent God, M’Boi, jealousy cursed a pair of lovers, Naipi and Taruba, to be separated by a huge waterfall. The Serpent God was so furious that he couldn’t have the beautiful Naipi that his rage created a huge chasm in the earth, which formed a mighty river. Naipi and Taruba were turned into a rock and a palm tree. Legends say that the lovers are responsible for creating the frequent rainbows over Iguazú Falls, despite M’Boi’s best efforts to keep them apart.

Sri Lankan souvenirs
1. MASKS
Wood-carved masks have been an age-old means of scaring off evil spirits, and today, these vicious visages make excellent keepsakes. Visitors keen on exploring Sri Lankan mask culture (and, of course, picking up souvenir masks) should visit Ambalangoda, a western seaside town famous for its ceremonial Raksha masks, puppets, and ‘devil dancers.’
2. JEWELS
Rubies and sapphires are two of Sri Lanka’s most famous jewels, along with moonstones; Ceylon sapphires are blue sapphires unique to Sri Lanka and are known for their singular colour and lustre. It is generally safer to buy gems and jewellery in stores that are accredited by either the Sri Lanka Gem & Jewellery Association or the International Coloured Gemstone Association.
3. TEXTILES
4. BIG BRASS
INSPIRED TO VISIT SRI LANKA?
Check out our tours here
For fashionistas seeking something special, Sri Lanka has several up-and-coming designers who incorporate modern designs and minimalist features into sarees and sarongs. If the east-meets-west look isn’t your thing, you can find beautiful traditional hand-loomed sarongs (for men) and sarees (for women) all across the island. Linen is also a popular material, as well as lace, which was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 16th century.
Metal is big business in Kandy, thanks to Sri Lankan temples and weddings’ high demand for delicate brass work in the form of lamps, vases, and other metalcraft. There’s also a wide range of religious icons of Buddha and Hindu gods. The town of Pilimathalawa, just by Kandy, is especially known for its high-quality brassware.
5. CEYLON TEA
Naturally, tea is one of Sri Lanka’s most popular souvenirs. Ceylon refers to the region, and not to a specific plant or strain of tea. Ceylon tea has various categories that any tea seller would be happy to show you; most Ceylon teas are black, but there are also green Assamese teas, and white ‘silver tip’ teas. Tea purists should look for single-estate, high-grown teas that pack a punch — the cheapest and best way to find good tea is to scour the local markets and supermarkets. The very same teas sold in tourist areas, tea plantations, and factories are often very overpriced.

A visit to South America
Sharon and her husband, Anthony, reflect on our 19
Day Inspiring South America tour
What prompted you to book your tour?
My husband Anthony and I are constantly scouring the newspaper travel supplements and the Inspiring Vacations’ website weekly, and the South America offer was way too good to refuse—it included an incredible price for international airfares with a reputable carrier which no other tour could compete with.
Did your expectations meet reality?
Absolutely and more! It was great value for money. Our internal travel connections worked well although a little hectic at airports, our accommodation was clean and comfortable and quite up-market for some destinations, our guides were experts in their field and provided a very personable service by getting to know us in a short period of time.
Any surprises?
Firstly, we were blown away with the value for money this tour offered. We were amazed at how overwhelmed we both felt when visiting Machu Picchu. It certainly is a must see for bucket list chasers!
What were the highlights of this tour for you?
All our guides were amazing, spoke English extremely well and clued us up on what we could do in our free time if we wanted to explore more. Their knowledge of their home cities gave us a great understanding of their culture, and how tourism positively impacted their countries.
The Grand Adventura at Iguazu Falls is an absolute must. What a blast! So exhilarating. It’s very safe, even though it may not look like it. You get a completely different understanding of the volumes of water and its power. And yes, you get drenched but it's great fun!
What do you say to those pondering whether or not to book?
Do some research and work out what you want to see, and if the itinerary fits, don’t hesitate. Work out what time of year suits you for travel in regards to temperatures and rainfall. May was great for us to travel, although The Amazon was still extremely humid, but we knew this.
Any advice for future travellers?
At Iguazu Falls, be prepared to get drenched and if you want to take pics, make sure you have waterproof protection for your camera or phone. Be sure you get medication to treat altitude sickness. Personal fitness is not a deciding factor in being fine with altitudes—don’t be fooled!
Did you do any optional tours?
We did a few optional tours, and most were very worthwhile.

Perfect customsJapanese and etiquette
Japan is a country with buckets of charm and ancient history, but its customs can be tricky to navigate
There’s a lot to love about Japan. Its quirky streets, delicious cuisine and centuries-old castles attract millions of visitors each year, but while its culture intrigues, it also confuses. Manners and strict etiquette practices are deeply entrenched in the lives of Japanese people and can be intimidating for first-time travellers.
Yoshimi Nagashima, etiquette expert and founder of Impredge, an image and etiquette consultancy based in Tokyo, says that Japanese people put importance on maintaining good harmony with others.
"Etiquette in Japan has been considered wisdom for living comfortably with each other for a long time," says Yoshimi. "If you learn our customs and etiquette in advance, you will be able to [connect] with local people, making your trip more enjoyable and exciting,” she says.
Here, Yoshimi offers some tips to be mindful of when touring Japan.
1. Remove your shoes
In Japan, it’s customary to remove your shoes while indoors. Some westernised spots allow visitors to keep their shoes on, but when entering most homes, restaurants or ryokans (traditional inn), shoes should be left at the entrance. This practice keeps tatami floors looking pristine and prevents contamination coming inside.
2. Queue with the flow
In the Land of the Rising Sun, queueing is key. This applies to all the typical scenarios, such as waiting at a cafe or shop counter, and beyond.
“Japanese people form an orderly queue when waiting for

trains at busy times, such as the morning or evening rush hours,” Yoshimi says. You can forget slotting in beside a friend, too; Yoshimi says cutting the line is never acceptable.
3. Watch your chopstick technique
Like much of Asia, chopsticks are the cutlery of choice in Japan, but in addition to the challenge of mastering their technique, travellers must also watch the way they use them. Yoshimi says the biggest faux-pas relate to Japanese funerary practices; these are known as tate bashi, the act of sticking your chopsticks into the middle of a bowl of rice; and utsushi bashi, the passing of food from one set of chopsticks to another. Both techniques are demonstrated in Japanese funerals and are therefore disrespectful in any other setting.
4. Slurp Away
In many corners of the world, noodle soup causes anxiety, but in Japan, there's no such problem. Slurping is considered a sign of enjoyment and is even said to enhance the flavour of your meal! You have our permission to order a steaming bowl of ramen and slurp with abandon.
5. Don’t be late
Japanese are very punctual people and when visiting the country, it’s expected that you’ll follow suit.
“When you travel by bus or train, you need to be at the station or bus stop on time, otherwise you will miss your [transport],” says Yoshimi.Catch any train in Japan and you’ll quickly learn this is true; it’s common for public transport to arrive ahead of schedule and depart precisely on time

INSPIRED TO VISIT DARWIN? Check out our tours here
Whether you’re interested in wildlife, history, shopping, arts or food, Darwin offers visitors plenty to do and see. Here, 10 of our favourites.
1. Enjoy the markets
Darwin is famous for its tropical outdoor lifestyle and proximity to Asia, and as a result, locals are spoilt for choice when it comes to outdoor markets. Throughout the year there are markets running in and around Darwin city, including Parap Markets, Nightcliff Markets, Rapid Creek Markets, and the famous Mindil Beach Sunset Markets. Tantalise your senses with delicious food items, purchase unique handmade gifts, and browse through loads of delicious local produce stalls.
2. Take a swim at the Wave Lagoon
The best place to cool off in Darwin! Situated at the Darwin Waterfront precinct, the Darwin Wave Lagoon features man-made waves, just like a surf beach. There’s a variety of blow-up pool floats, boogie boards or pool noodles available, or relax on a sun lounge with an ice cream from the kiosk and soak up the atmosphere.
Meet the reptiles at Crocosaurus Cove
In the heart of the city you'll find Crocosaurus Cove which houses some of the Territory’s most terrifying reptiles. From snakes and spiders to the largest saltwater crocodiles, there’s a lot to see and learn at this reptile centre. There’s a range of hands-on experiences— literally! Hold a baby crocodile and get your photo taken, or for the more adventurous, jump in and swim with a 5 metre crocodile as part of the Cage of Death experience.
4. Experience history with technology
The Royal Flying Doctor Service Tourist Facility at Stokes Hill Wharf is an interactive learning experience which tells the story of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the Bombing of Darwin through the wonder of technology. History is brought to life with the use of virtual reality, projections and holograms.

Conveniently accessible with a pathway from the Esplanade in Darwin City, the Deckchair Cinema has views of Darwin Harbour during the day, and a sky full of stars at night. This majestic open-air cinema is open throughout the dry season and has permanent deck chairs available for film viewers to relax on.
7. Spend the afternoon in an infinity pool overlooking Mindil Beach
Looking as pretty as a postcard, the infinity pool at Mindil Beach Casino and Resort will make you feel like you’re on holiday somewhere exotic. Featuring a swimup bar, you can spend the afternoon sipping cocktails in the pool and watching the sun set over the ocean. Bliss!
8. The iconic Mindil Beach Sunset Markets
Arguably Darwin’s most well-known markets, the Mindil Beach Sunset Markets are very popular through April-October each year. Situated alongside Mindil Beach, you’ll find eclectic stalls and the perfect place to pick up souvenirs to take home, or sample cuisine from one of the various food stalls that are set up each Thursday and Sunday. Bring your picnic blanket along and settle on the beach ready to watch the sun melt into the sea.
9. Enjoy the character and charm of Lola’s Pergola
For something quirky and different, visit Lola’s Pergola. Tucked away in Cullen Bay on the edge of the marina, this bar can’t be missed. You’ll be drawn in by the merry-go-round display and circus theme, and once inside be pleasantly surprised with the range of craft beers on tap and delicious menu.
10. Meander through the Botanical Gardens
Wander around the lush green grass and tropical gardens of colourful heliconias, gingers, tropical orchids, bromeliads and other exotic plants. The George Brown Botanical Gardens cover 42 hectares and are located only 2 km from Darwin city. You can take yourself on a self-guided tour under the canopy of trees, see the sights on a Segway tour and stop off for a coffee or bite to eat at the glorious Eva’s Cafe. The garden is also rich in history, having been in Darwin for over 130 years and surviving World War II and Cyclone Tracy

50 THINGS TO DO IN SPAIN.
From flamenco classes in Seville to getting cultured at Museo Guggenheim, Spain has plenty to offer first (or third) time visitors this summer
1. MARVEL AT THE PALACIO REAL DE MADRID
The jewel in Madrid’s architectural crown is its 18th-century Royal Palace (pictured right). This lavish, baroque building has over 3,000 rooms including an armoury and royal chapel, and looks out over a sprawling courtyard.
2. GET CULTURED AT THE MUSEO GUGGENHEIM, BILBAO
In 1997, the Basque city of Bilbao welcomed its own branch of the famous Guggenheim Museum. The waterfront gallery is packed full of modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures, but the biggest artwork is the building itself.
3. DISCOVER THE MAGNIFICENT ALHAMBRA, GRANADA
The fortress is an homage to the region’s Moorish history and a must-see on any trip to southern Spain. Go early in the morning to purchase admission at the door, or ditch the queues and pre-book your entry up to four months in advance.
4. ATTEND A FÚTBOL MATCH AT CAMP NOU, BARCELONA
If Spain worships soccer like a religion, then Camp Nou is their Mecca. Visit the home of FC Barcelona and watch a match with tens of thousands of fans.
5. PICNIC IN PARQUE DEL BUEN RETIRO, MADRID
This 300-acre park in the centre of the city boasts over 15,000 trees, sculptures, manicured gardens and one of Madrid’s most spectacular buildings: Palacio de Cristal. Hire a boat for the best views of the palace and surrounds.

6. PASS AROUND A PORRÓN
While in Catalonia, watch a master lift the porrón higher and higher, pouring the wine into their mouths continuously without spilling a drop, or give it a go yourself. Just don’t wear white.
7. SEE A SHOW AT THE TEATRO ESPAÑOL
The Teatro Español is a lovely 16th century theatre in Spain’s vivacious capital, Madrid. In medieval times, the theatre was open-air and played host to many literary events, but several fires destroyed the original construction.
8. TOUR GAUDÍ’S MASTERPIECES
Anyone who’s been or is planning a visit to Barcelona knows of Antoni Gaudí. The famous architect and master of Modernisme (Catalan Modernism) left his distinctive mark across the Catalonian capital, and no visit to the city is complete without seeing his work.
9. TAKE A FLAMENCO CLASS IN SEVILLE
The southern city of Seville has long been known for its flamenco. This intriguing style of dance, with intricate movements and clapping, was popularised in western Andalusia. Test your moves at a beginners class, or sit back and watch the professionals.
10. SAMPLE THE LOCAL DROP IN RIOJA
If you consider yourself a budding sommelier, you might be familiar with Rioja. This region of northern Spain is wine country, with rolling vineyards as far as the eye can see, and plenty of delicious food to complement the local vino.
11. GAWK AT THE HANGING HOUSES OF CUENCA
In the UNESCO-listed town of Cuenca, a complex of multi-storey houses cling to the side of a vertical cliff. Las Casas Colgadas (the Hanging Houses) are a fascinating architectural feat, thought to have been originally constructed in the 15th century.
12. PHOTOGRAPH SPAIN’S BLUE CITY, JÚZCAR
Júzcar isn’t your average Spanish town. This oncesleepy village shot to fame after being painted bright blue as a publicity stunt by Sony Pictures, for the 2011 release of The Smurfs
13. MARVEL AT THE REPLICA CAVE OF ALTAMIRA
Situated in the north of Spain, the Cave of Altamira is home to some of the finest prehistoric paintings in the world. This Palaeolithic-era art is believed to date back over 20,000 years, but the site was closed to the public in 2002 when mould was found inside, presumably due to the constant flow of tourists. Now, five visitors a week are randomly selected to tour the caves, decked in protective suits.

14. RELAX ON THE BEACHES OF MENORCA
The smaller sibling of tourist-favourite Mallorca, the Balearic island of Menorca is home to equally spectacular beaches, sans the heaving Mallorca crowds. If you’re dreaming of impossibly blue water and white sandy coves, Menorca is the place for you.
15. EXPLORE ICONIC SANTIAGO DE COMPOSTELA
Santiago de Compostela is the historic capital of the autonomous Galicia region, and the final stop along the famous Camino de Santiago. Whether you’re religious or not, exploring this medieval town and its catedral (cathedral) is a delight.
16. VISIT THE CHOCOLATE MUSEUM IN BARCELONA
Here’s one for the sweet tooths. Barcelona’s petite Museu de la Xocolata takes visitors on a journey through the history of everyone’s favourite sugary treat, with the help of elaborate chocolate sculptures. Even the admission ‘ticket’ is edible! Cap off your visit with a traditional hot chocolate from the café.
17. HEAD UNDERWATER AT THE MUSEO ATLÁNTICO
The Canary island of Lanzarote is home to Europe’s only underwater museum and certainly one of the world’s most impressive. Don your flippers, because the Museo Atlantico’s hundreds of sculptures are only accessible to divers and snorkelers.
What to expect on
18. DINE ON WORLD-CLASS PAELLA AT FLOR DE VALENCIA
No trip to Spain is complete without indulging in more-ish paella, and none are more authentic than Flor de Valencia. Visit this Valencian gem for a traditional Spanish feed, plenty of quality vino, and wonderful service.
19. DAY-TRIP TO ÁVILA
Just over 100 km from Madrid, the fortified city of Ávila is one of the most impressive medieval strongholds in Spain. Wander the imposing city walls and Romanesque churches by day, and marvel at the illuminated ramparts at night.
20. EXPERIENCE THE MINDBENDING DALÍ THEATRE-MUSEUM
Salvador Dalí is undoubtedly one of the most celebrated artists of his time. A pioneer of the surrealist movement, Dalí created some of the world’s most recognisable works, including The Persistence of Memory and The Temptation of St. Anthony. Visit the Dalí Theatre-Museum in his hometown of Figueres to learn more about the great artist and see some of his work.
21. GO ON A CIDER TOUR IN ASTURIAS
Asturias is to cider what Rioja is to wine. This northern region of Spain has been producing sidra (cider) for thousands of years, thanks to its prized apple orchards and the wet conditions that nourish them. The drinking process is also unusual; at a typical Sidería (cider house), the drink is poured at a height, creating bubbles.
22. WANDER MEDIEVAL AÍNSA
The town of Aínsa couldn’t possibly be more idyllic. Set against a Pyranean backdrop and bordering Ordesa National Park, this picturesque village is perfectly preserved, with cobbled streets, stone buildings and the remains of a hilltop chateau.

23. TAKE A STROLL THROUGH THE GENERALIFE GARDENS
Adjacent to the Alhambra, Granada’s Generalife Gardens are a series of well-manicured jardines (gardens) that once functioned as places of leisure for royalty, outside of the main palace.
24. HIKE TO THE CASCADA DE COLORES
The island of La Palma is a popular hiking destination, thanks to its stunning natural landscape, but those seeking a challenge should look no further than the Barranco de las Angustias. Along the regular route, take a detour across Dos Aguas and you’ll come to the Cascada de Colores, a spectacular waterfall painted in swathes of green, yellow and orange. This colouration is due to both dissolved iron in the water, and algae. As it’s a natural phenomenon, its appearance changes with the seasons.
25. TAKE A DETOUR TO ANCIENT EGYPT AT PARQUE DEL OESTE
Explore Madrid’s lush Parque del Oeste and you’ll come across an unusual sight: an Egyptian temple. The Temple of Debod is a real ancient artefact, donated by the Egyptian government during the construction of the Aswan Dam. Upon its donation, the entire temple was dismantled and rebuilt in Madrid.
26. HONE YOUR ESPAÑOL SKILLS AT AGUALIVAR SPANISH SCHOOL
Widely regarded as one of the best language schools in Spain, family-run Agualivar Spanish School in Málaga will take your español from beginner to intermediate in no time. Far from a regular classroom, students at Agualivar are invited to stay on the premises during their studies, eating and interacting with teachers for a fully immersive experience.
27. SIP ON TRADITIONAL HORCHATA IN VALENCIA
Another Valencian favourite is horchata (pronounced or-cha-ta) – a drink made from chufas (tiger nuts). While the beverage looks milky and has a creamy texture, the Spanish rendition is entirely plant-based and veganfriendly. Try it at one of the city’s many Horchaterías, with a farton (Valencian sweet pastry).
28. INDULGE IN CHEESECAKE FROM LA VIÑA
La Viña is ranked a respectable 51 of 748 San Sebastian restaurants on Tripadvisor, but there’s one dish on its menu that can’t be beaten: the torta de queso (cheesecake). Their no-frills rendition of the beloved dessert is baked until golden, light and perfectly textured.
29. VISIT THE PONT DEL DIABLE
El Pont del Diable, or Ferreres Aqueduct, an ancient bridge dating back to the Roman Empire. The aqueduct was originally built to supply water to the city of Tarragona (then known as Tarraco) and despite being an impressive sight, what remains today is just a segment of the former structure.
30.
SEND YOUR SENSES WILD AT THE MERCADO DE VALLEHERMOSO
Madrid is full of fancy markets, teeming with tourists and commercial stalls, but Mercado de Vallehermoso isn’t one of them. Visit the market on an empty stomach to indulge in all kinds of food, from sushi to curry, or pick up fresh produce from the wide array of specialty stores.
31. ENJOY A TIPPLE OF VERMÚT ROJO (RED VERMOUTH)
When in Spain, do as the Spaniards do. Spanish vermút rojo is just as fragrant as you would imagine, infused with spices and botanicals, but often sweeter. On a hot summer day, order a glass over ice, with a dash of soda water and an orange wedge.
32. CYCLE THROUGH SCENIC NAVARRE
Whether you’re a keen cyclist, or just like to stay active on holidays, a trip to Navarre is a great addition to any Spanish itinerary. This scenic part of northern Spain stretches to the Pyrenees and includes several spectacular towns like Olite and Puente la Reina.

33. EAT AT THE WORLD’S OLDEST RESTAURANT IN MADRID
If you’re searching for memorable dining experiences, head to the world’s oldest restaurant in Madrid, Restaurante Botín. The Guinness World Record holder was founded in 1725 and continues to imbue tradition into every dish. Hot tip: try the suckling pig.
34. PHOTOGRAPH CERVANTES’ WINDMILLS IN CONSUEGRA
The white windmills of Consuegra were made famous in Miguel de Cervantes’ novel Don Quixote and still stand, over 400 years later.
35. RELAX ON LA PALMA’S BLACK BEACHES
La Palma is a volcanic island, so its playas (beaches) aren’t the typical, golden sort. Instead, its shores are black and its ‘sand’ is made of finely ground up lava.
36. GET INSPIRED AT GAUDI’S MASTERPIECE-IN-PROGRESS LA SAGRADA FAMILIA
La Sagrada Familia is, without a doubt, one of Spain’s most popular attractions and the moment you step foot inside, you’ll see why. This one-of-a-kind basilica designed by Antoni Gaudí in Barcelona, has been under construction for over 130 years, and is slated for completion in 2026.
37. VISIT THE MUSEO DE LAS BRUJAS
Among Spain’s stranger museums is the Museo de las Brujas. At the start of the 17th century, 11 women of the Zugarramurdi municipality were convicted of witchcraft, as part of the Inquisition. Tour this small museum to learn about the women and the myths that led to their sentence.
38. EAT AS MUCH JAMÓN (CURED HAM) AS POSSIBLE
Spanish jamón isn’t something you put between two slices of cheap bread with cheese. This dry-cured, perfectly salty meat is ubiquitous throughout Spain, featuring on almost every menu. Try it on its own, mixed into croquettas (croquettes), or served on crusty pan con tomate (tomato bread).
39. TOUR THE ABANDONED VILLAGE OF ESCÓ
Escó is a practically deserted town in the province of Zaragoza. Set against a mountainous backdrop, the village was largely abandoned in the ‘60s after a nearby dam was built, which caused flooding. Today, just a handful of people reside in the little-known town.
40. GET LOST INSIDE THE CUEVAS DE ARTÀ
Mallorca’s Cuevas de Artà are a network of underground caves filled with towering stalagmites and stalactites. The natural labyrinth is now a popular attraction, but flick through the visitor book and you’ll find famous names like Alexandre Dumas, Victor Hugo and Jules Verne.
41. SAMPLE THE DELICIOUS GOODS AT BAR NÉSTOR
Bar Néstor is one of San Sebastian’s most popular restaurants for a reason. This local favourite serves just seven items, but the stars of the show are the txuleta steak, served rare and the tortilla de patata (potato tortilla) – possibly the only tortilla in the world with a daily waiting list.

42. LEARN ABOUT A MASTER AT MUSEO PICASSO
Pablo Picasso needs no introduction. Visit his home city of Málaga to tour the Museo Picasso, learn about the man behind the Cubist movement and view a fascinating collection of his work. Make sure to pick up a free audio guide on your way in.
43. SEE THE HOLY SANTA CUEVA DE COVADONGA
Part of a larger sanctuary, the holy cave is a popular pilgrimage spot and despite welcoming plenty of visitors, it’s still a peaceful place of worship.
44. STROLL AROUND MADRID’S LA LATINA NEIGHBOURHOOD
One of Madrid’s oldest barrios (neighbourhoods) is a local favourite. Explore La Latina’s historic plazas by day and hop between its lively tapas bars at night.
45. INDULGE IN CATALAN CALÇOTS AT CAL GANXO
Calçots are a type of green onion native to the Catalonia region, traditionally wrapped in newspaper and cooked over a fire. At Cal Ganxo in Valls, the calçots are cooked to perfection and served with a homemade secret sauce, followed by grilled meats and finished with a crema catalana.
46. GET TO KNOW WHITE-WASHED FRIGILIANA
A quintessential Moorish town in southern Spain, Frigiliana is postcard-perfect. Wander its winding, white-washed streets, past tapas bars and craft stores, and you’ll soon see why it’s considered one of the country’s most beautiful villages.
47. DINE ON FOOD A LA VOLCANO AT EL DIABLO
Situated in the stunning Timanfaya National Park, El Diablo restaurant uses an unconventional method to cook its food: volcanic heat. The Lanzarote Island restaurant has a custom grill, which sits across an opening in the ground; less than two metres below, lava bubbles away at over 400 degrees celsius.
48. HIKE ONE OF THE SIERRA NEVADA TRAILS
The Sierra Nevada is a highlight of southern Spain and one of the best places to pull on the hiking boots. Hoya de la Mora-Veleta is one of the least demanding trails, and on a clear day, rewards hikers with views over Granada and the Mediterranean.
49. TOUR THE PRADO MUSEUM
If you’re an art lover, visiting the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid is a must. Featuring prominent work by artists like Velázquez, Goya and El Greco, among many others, set aside an afternoon to explore the museum, but prepare to tackle crowds.
50. GORGE YOURSELF ON CHURROS AT CHOCOLATERÍA SAN GINES
Churros are synonymous with Spain, and Chocolatería San Gines dish up some of the best. This iconic churrería is a Madrid institution, serving delicious deep-fried dough and dark chocolate dipping sauce since 1894.

NAME JARROD DRAPER
OCCUPATION
MUSICAL THEATRE
PERFORMER
HOME TOWN ORANGE, NSW
A new production of Sunset Boulevard opens this month in Melbourne before moving to the Sydney Opera House in August. Starring alongside Sarah Brightman (who plays lead Norma Desmond) is Jarrod Draper who plays Artie Green. We sat down with Jarrod in between rehearsals to chat all things Artie and how to spend a perfect day in his hometown of Orange.
Congratulations on your role as Artie Green in Sunset Boulevard. Can you describe the show in one sentence?
Thank you! In one sentence: Sunset Boulevard is an extravagant musical that pulls back the curtain on the big machine that is Hollywood and takes a deep dive into the rise and fall of the human condition.
How are you preparing for the role of Artie?
I did some research on the time period in which the musical is set and the historical events that were occurring at that time. This helps me get a real flavour for where we are. I also learnt as much of the score as I could before starting rehearsals. In doing this it gives me the freedom and flexibility to make choices from the get-go as the material is strongly implemented in my brain. The rest I really leave up to the rehearsal room when you’re with your fellow actors. That’s when the real magic is created.
It’s safe to say Sunset Boulevard is iconic! What are you most excited about for Australian audiences?
It certainly is! I am truly most excited for audiences to see a completely brand new version of the musical that they know and love. The golden era of Hollywood is perceived through such a glamorous lens and there’s no doubt that this version of Sunset Boulevard will immerse the audience in that glamour. The best theatre teleports you to a place outside your reality, that causes you to pause and reflect on the world today, and I’m excited for the audience to step back into the late 40s/early 50s to see how we’ve progressed, or even regressed in society. It’s such a rarity that we get shows
WANT
of this scale and grandeur in Australia, so to be able to gift the experience of Sunset Boulevard to the audience is a true honour and I cannot wait.
Describe your perfect day in your hometown?
Orange seems to be quite a hidden gem—actually, I’m not so sure it’s that hidden anymore! Everyone seems to be moving there to escape the hustle of the city. It’s booming with culture, with plenty of options for food and wine. But I would have to say my perfect day would be best spent in the sun at my family property throwing the ball to my dogs with my loved ones. Then gathering in the evening, around the fire, for some home cooked wood-fire pizza. Just the simplicity of that is what makes me happy. I truly love how grounding it is when I return home. I’m Aboriginal and Orange so happens to be where my people, the Wiradjuri Nation, are from. Planting my feet on the ground of my ancestors is super important for me to recharge and heal.
Your local tips for visitors to Orange?
You can’t go wrong with visiting the acclaimed wineries in Orange. For an incredible view of the city, walk up to the Pinnacle Lookout, or if a small hike is your thing, you can go to Federal Falls which is a beautiful waterfall where you can also swim.
Where are you headed on your next holiday?
At this stage, it’s Japan. My sister has actually just moved there for her work so we are planning to go and visit her as a family over Christmas. Everyone seems to absolutely rave about their experience there so I’m very excited! It’s a culture I’ve always wanted to immerse myself in.
Once-in-a-lifetime bucket list destination?
The Maldives or Bora Bora. The colour of the ocean is reason enough for me. Both look so incredibly beautiful and serene.
