Dear Friends of Cape Symphony,
As we reflect on another remarkable year for Cape Symphony, I am filled with immense pride and gratitude for the achievements and milestones we have collectively reached during the 2023-2024 season. This year has been a testament to our commitment to inspiring joy and enriching the lives of our community through the power of music and arts education.
The Cape Symphony Orchestra continues to be a beacon of cultural vibrancy, providing world-class performances that resonate deeply with our audiences. This season, our orchestra, the second-largest union orchestra in Massachusetts, performed to sold-out audiences and welcomed a series of acclaimed guest conductors as we embarked on a two-year search for our next conductor. The response from our community has been overwhelming, with over 30,000 seats filled across nine concert cycles. Notably, our Tix4Music program enabled 455 students to experience live orchestral music for free, furthering our mission of accessibility and inclusivity.
Our education programs have also seen unprecedented growth. We have expanded our offerings to meet the diverse needs of our community, with over 600 students from preschoolers to adults enrolled in our music, dance, and art classes. The awarding of over $90,000 in scholarships this year—a 350% increase from last year—underscores our dedication to making arts education accessible to all. The Cape Symphony Youth Orchestra Program has flourished, with a record 85 students participating, supported by the Instrument Access Program, which provided instruments and lessons at no cost to students in need.
Cape Symphony Preschool continues to set the standard for early childhood education by integrating music and the arts into a robust curriculum aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. We have seen our enrollment grow, with 68 families entrusting us with their children’s early education. Our inclusive financial aid program remains a cornerstone of our commitment to accessibility, ensuring that all families, regardless of their financial situation, can benefit from our exceptional programs.
Additionally, Cape Symphony Presents has expanded its reach, bringing diverse musical experiences to audiences in nine different communities across Cape Cod and the Islands. Through strategic collaborations and a focus on inclusivity, Cape Symphony Presents offered 22 performances at 17 venues with over 4,000 seats filled this year. This program is a testament to our belief that world-class music should be accessible to everyone, regardless of where they live on the Cape and Islands.
As we look forward to the 2024-2025 season, we remain steadfast in our mission to inspire joy through the transformative power of music and arts education. Our accomplishments this year would not have been possible without the unwavering support of our patrons, students, donors, volunteers, and staff. Your dedication and enthusiasm fuel our passion and drive us to reach new heights.
Thank you for being an integral part of our journey. Together, we will continue to build a thriving, inclusive, and vibrant community through the arts.
With warmest regards,
Dr. Michael Albaugh Executive Director Cape Symphony
Cape Symphony Orchestra is the second largest union orchestra in Massachusetts. Since 1973, Cape Symphony Orchestra has played a full, year-round season of Masterpiece and Pops concerts for Cape Cod residents. With a roster of over 60 professional musicians, Cape Symphony Orchestra seeks to “inspire joy” within all who attend concerts.
Cape Cod public school students experience live orchestral music through Young People’s Concerts. Cape Symphony’s Tix4Music program provides free tickets to students and their chaperones for Cape Symphony Orchestra concerts.
During the 23 | 24 season, Cape Symphony launched a two-year search for its next Music Director and was led throughout the season by a slate of acclaimed guests and familiar faces. In the 24 | 25 season, finalists will lead the Cape Symphony Orchestra in hopes of being named full-time Music Director beginning with the 25 | 26 concert season.
• Cape Symphony Orchestra sold out two performances of “The Elton John Experience” in May
• Joe Marchio, Assistant Conductor, led six sold out performances of “Holiday on the Cape” and Jae Cosmos Lee, Concertmaster, led the orchestra in an all-Mozart program
• Cape Cod audiences were treated to acclaimed guest conductors throughout the season including Farkhad Khudyev, Kevin Fitzgerald, Francisco Noya, and Carolyn Watson

Cape Symphony’s education programs provide a broad spectrum of arts education across two vibrant campuses—one near Cape Cod Community College in West Barnstable and another on Highfield Drive in Falmouth. The educational offerings are diverse, catering to a wide range of ages from preschoolers to adults. The emphasis is on inclusivity and accessibility, ensuring that the joy and benefits of arts education are extended to all. In the 2024 fiscal year, this commitment to accessibility was underscored by $90,000 in scholarships, helping to ensure that students of varying backgrounds could engage in and benefit from the enriching programs offered.

CSYO ensembles rehearse in both Barnstable and Falmouth, and a special transportation program brings students from Martha’s Vineyard to Falmouth for weekly rehearsals.

In Fiscal Year 2024, Cape Arts and Entertainment, Inc. navigated significant financial challenges culminating in a shortfall of over $1M. Despite this, there were promising successes: concert ticket revenue reached $1.5M, returning to pre-pandemic levels, and tuition revenue of $762k continued to trend upward. At the same time, the organization saw increases in Concert Production and Administrative expenses. Grants and Contributions, specifically bequests, received in FY24 were significantly less than average but are extremely hard to predict. Overall, we are seeing a downward trend in individual giving. Looking ahead to FY25 and beyond, the organization is optimistic that with the collective efforts of the CAE Board, Staff, patrons, and our new Music Director, the financial foundation of this wonderful organization will be strengthened.

Dear friends,
Thank you all for spending time engaging with our 2024 Annual Report. As Chair of the Board of Trustees, I see this report as critical in communicating to our community the full breadth of our programs, our many successes during this fiscal year, as well as the challenges facing us as a non-profit.
As I read through this report, the commonality of growth and innovation inspires me. Cape Symphony, bolstered by a mission “to inspire joy”, is adapting to the needs of the community, offering more programs in more locations than ever before, and serving more members of our community than at any other time in our organization’s history. We believe that people will find inspiration and joy within our programs. We believe that the arts can be a healing, unifying, and communitybuilding tool. These beliefs drive us towards examining access, because the benefits of arts engagement should not be limited to the privileged few.
This year, Cape Symphony made programs more accessible by offering significant tuition assistance to those in need and making free tickets to Cape Symphony Orchestra concerts available to students and their families. We staged affordable Cape Symphony Presents concerts in nine communities on Cape Cod and the Islands, played a free Joy4July concert in Hyannis, and brought the Cape Symphony Orchestra into our local public schools for free concerts twice during the past school year. These accessibility initiatives are underwritten by our donors, and I thank each of you for helping us bring Cape Symphony’s programs to even more audiences and students.
Improving access for students was a passion of Theresa Egan who served as the Secretary of our Board until her passing on May 18. Theresa’s legacy lives on through our Instrument Access Program. Theresa was an early and passionate philanthropist supporting this innovative program providing free instruments, tuition, and lessons to students in need. To honor her memory and philanthropy, the Board’s annual year-end meeting has been named in her honor.
It is my goal to continually strengthen our institution so that our children, grandchildren, and many future generations can enjoy Cape Symphony Orchestra concerts, participate in music and arts education programs, and develop rich, local communities enlivened by the arts. As a non-profit, we continually face financial and logistical obstacles to making this goal a reality. I thank you all for sharing this vision and so generously supporting our organization, because we truly need your help to make this dream a reality. I am proud to work with the team of Trustees below to address our challenges as a nonprofit head on and discover innovative sustainable solutions for the future.
With gratitude,
