has performed 10,000 Iron Infusions, helping over 5,000 Women and Babies Iron deficiency is an epidemic. In an October 17 New York Times article, Alisha Gupta reported that 35% of young women in the U.S. have low iron. The reason it's not discovered is lack of awareness among women and their doctors. The most recent FIGO Ob/Gyn society guidelines recommend testing all women for iron "throughout their life" and during pregnancies. Since 2020 we've been trying to get the word out. Steven Fein, MD, MPH Iron deficiency is common, Medical Director of and it's an important probFem Infusion Centers lem. Women with iron deficiency are fatigued and impaired, and pregnant women may have complications during delivery. Babies born to women who have iron deficiency may have developmental problems, and their mothers may have postpartum depression. Iron deficiency is a major cause of gender inequality. Women are expected to have lower blood hemoglobin than men do. Women with low iron may not be able to concentrate as well at work, and they may miss more days of work than women who have normal iron. Teenage girls with low iron may not perform as well in school or on standardized tests. Iron deficiency is also a cause of racial inequality because it's more common among Hispanic and African American women and their babies. Oral iron supplements usually do not solve the problem of iron deficiency, both because they're not easy to take and because they don't provide enough iron. Instead, iron infusions are needed to increase and sustain the body's proper iron level. These infusions have become increasingly popular as women and their doctors learn how

effective and safe they are. The challenges of solving this public health problem have included the lack of awareness about iron deficiency, the lack of understanding about iron infusions, and the lack of access to infusion centers to receive the infusions. In 2021 we created Fem Iron Infusions centers to solve this problem. Our solution includes educating women and doctors about iron deficiency, encouraging iron testing (separate from hemoglobin testing), evaluating each women's iron status by a telemedicine hematology consult, and doing iron infusions in our centers. Recently, we reached a milestone of doing 10,000 infusions in our infusion centers. We've improved the lives of 5,000 women and their babies. Please encourage all young women to get iron testing (ferritin), either through their doctors or through us. Let's solve this epidemic together. with tips to manage holiday season stress

‘Tis the season: Cooking, gift-giving, holiday parties, family and health insurance open enrollment are in full swing through the New Year. While intended to celebrate family, friends and the season of giving for many, it’s also the prelude to holiday stress. Keep calm with these simple tips and take action to ensure the winter months are merry and bright: • Prioritize taking care of yourself • Limit social obligations • Focus on the less commercial reasons for the holidays and making the holidays mean more SET PRIORITIES Decide which traditions offer the most positive impact and eliminate unnecessary activities. If you become overwhelmed by baking, caroling, shopping, sending cards, and visiting relatives, you may want to look at your priorities, pick a few favorites, really enjoy them, and skip the rest. TAKE SHORTCUTS If you tend to overcommit and can’t give up anything, try to simplify. Send cards only to those with whom communicate regularly. Or don’t include a personal note in each one. The same goes for baking—will anyone shun you if you buy from the local bakery instead? Find ways to cut corners so you have time to enjoy your activities much more. EAT SMART Looking and feeling good during the holidays automatically means less stress on your health. Be aware of holiday food triggers that may cause

you to overeat. Have some healthy food at hand for each meal and practice mindful eating.

Mental madness? You’re not alone.

TOGETHERNESS—OR NOT Think back and try to pinpoint how much togetherness you and your family can take before feeling negative stress. Can you limit your time so that it still feels special and joyous without draining you? It’s okay to forego visits or limit them to every other year.

At this time last year, 29% of American’s said they planned to adopt mental health related New Year resolutions with the top three being: exercise more (65%); meditation (45%); and seeing a therapist (38%). Nearly 2 out of 5 (37%) rated their mental health fair or poor, up from 31% in 2021.1

On the flip side, if you experience loneliness during this time of year, consider inviting friends to your home. Or volunteer to help those less fortunate. Many people report being fulfilled by focusing on what you have rather than what you lack. SET A SCHEDULE Put your plans on paper—you’ll see how realistic (or unrealistic) they are. Fill in scheduled activities, including drive time and downtime, to see if you’re packing in too much.

Mental health services are readily available these days. The BeWell program at Sanitas has behavioral health professionals onsite in their primary care centers. Patients seeking screenings and/or counseling for depression, anxiety, stress, insomnia, caregiver burnout and more, can make an appointment by calling 1-866-807-0781.

In addition, be sure to schedule time each day for focused breathing, exercising or taking a walk. Daylight can reduce or eliminate the symptoms of seasonal affective disorder (SAD)—a byproduct of seasons changing from fall to winter. FOCUS ON YOU The holidays are a time when we focus on others. But during this high-stress season it’s more important than ever to find time for yourself. Schedule some “me” time for self-care. Start by choosing a health plan that covers mental health care and schedule a wellness visit as part of your New Year resolutions.

PICKLEBALL TENNIS PLAYERS' SECRET LOVE AFFAIR WITH A GENTLER RACKET By Grant P. Turner

When it comes to the world of racket sports, tennis has long reigned supreme. The power, precision and finesse required to excel on the tennis court are legendary. Yet, over the past few years, a quiet revolution has been taking place on the sidelines of tennis courts all over the world. Tennis players, from aspiring amateurs to seasoned pros, are discovering the joys of pickleball. This hybrid sport combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, offering a unique and exhilarating experience that's easy on the joints. Let's dive into why tennis players love pickleball and why they excel at it. The Pickleball Appeal Pickleball, often described as "the fastestgrowing sport in America," has found a special place in the hearts of tennis enthusiasts. Here's why: • Rapid Learning Curve: Tennis players often find that the transition to pickleball is smoother than expected. The court dimensions and net height are similar to tennis, and the shorter court allows for quicker rallies. Tennis players can quickly adapt their skills and strategies to excel in this new sport. • Inclusive Nature: Pickleball is known for its inclusivity, making it an ideal sport for players of all ages and skill levels. Tennis players appreciate the welcoming atmosphere, where they can easily find partners and opponents for spirited matches. • Social Aspect: Pickleball is a social sport, and the sense of community it fosters is a big draw for tennis players.

The sport's popularity means that finding a pickleball match is often as simple as showing up at a local court. • Cardiovascular Workout: Just like tennis, pickleball provides an excellent cardiovascular workout. The fast-paced nature of the game keeps players constantly moving, improving their fitness levels and overall health.

Why Tennis Players Excel Tennis players bring a unique set of skills and attributes to the pickleball court, giving them a competitive edge: • Racket Skills: Tennis players possess finely tuned racket skills, which are easily transferable to pickleball. Their ability to control and manipulate the ball with precision allows them to dominate the pickleball court. • Court Awareness: Tennis players are accustomed to covering a larger court, making their court awareness a valuable asset in pickleball. They can anticipate shots and move efficiently to counter their opponents. • Strategy and Spin: Tennis players are well-versed in strategy and spin control. This knowledge helps them craft deceptive shots and apply spin to the pickleball in ways that befuddle their opponents.

• Quick Reflexes: Tennis players develop lightning-fast reflexes, a quality that's indispensable in pickleball's rapidfire exchanges at the net. Their agility and reactions give them an advantage in close-quarters battles. • Endurance: Tennis players are accustomed to long, grueling matches, which means they often have better endurance than some pickleballexclusive players. This stamina can be a game-changer in lengthy pickleball rallies. Gentler on Joints and Body One of the most significant advantages of pickleball, particularly for tennis players who may have experienced wear and tear on their bodies, is its joint-friendly nature. Here's why pickleball is a more forgiving option: • Smaller Court: Pickleball courts are roughly a third of the size of a tennis court, reducing the distance players need to cover. This decreased court size places less strain on the joints and allows for shorter, more manageable movements.

• Lower Impact: The lightweight pickleball and its slower pace result in less joint impact compared to the heavier tennis ball. This lower impact is particularly beneficial for players dealing with joint issues or injuries. • Minimal Overhead Strokes: Unlike tennis, which features high-impact overhead serves and shots, pickleball relies on underhand serves and volleys, reducing the risk of shoulder and elbow injuries. • Shorter Matches: Pickleball games are typically shorter than tennis matches, meaning players spend less time on the court, which can be especially advantageous for those with joint concerns.

Pickleball's allure for tennis players is undeniable. It offers a seamless transition, a welcoming community, and a unique blend of familiar and new challenges. Tennis players' skills and attributes, honed on the tennis court, give them a competitive edge in the world of pickleball. Furthermore, the sport's gentler impact on the body makes it an appealing option for tennis players seeking a more joint-friendly alternative. As tennis enthusiasts pick up the pickleball paddle, they are discovering a thrilling new way to stay active, socialize and continue their love affair with racket sports, all while taking it easier on their bodies.

INGREDIENTS • 1 whole turkey (12-14 pounds) • 2-3 cups wood chips or chunks (hickory, apple, or cherry wood work well) • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted • 2 tbsp olive oil • 2 tsp garlic powder • 2 tsp onion powder • 2 tsp paprika • 1 tsp dried thyme • 1 tsp dried rosemary • Salt and black pepper to taste EQUIPMENT • Smoker • Charcoal or wood pellets (for the smoker) • Meat thermometer • Aluminum foil • Basting brush

DIRECTIONS  Preheat your smoker to a temperature of 225°F to 250°F (107°C to 121°C). Use charcoal, wood pellets or a combination of both, depending on your smoker type.  Rinse the turkey and pat it dry with paper towels.  In a small bowl, mix melted butter, olive oil, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, dried thyme, dried rosemary, salt and black pepper to create a flavorful rub. Rub the spice mixture evenly all over the turkey, inside and out, including under the skin.  Place the seasoned turkey on the smoker rack or on a roasting rack inside the smoker. Add the wood chips or chunks to the smoker box or charcoal, following your smoker's instructions. Maintain a consistent

temperature of 225°F to 250°F (107°C to 121°C) throughout the smoking process. Smoke the turkey until it reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C) in the thickest part of the thigh. This typically takes about 4-6 hours, but cooking times may vary based on the size of your turkey and smoker.  Periodically baste the turkey with the drippings from the smoker or the leftover butter mixture to keep it moist and add flavor. Use a meat thermometer to check the turkey's temperature regularly.  Once the turkey reaches the desired temperature, carefully remove it from the smoker and tent it with aluminum foil. Allow the smoked turkey to rest for about 20-30 minutes before carving. This allows the juices to redistribute and ensures a juicy turkey.

Ramon Leon, MD:

Pioneering Preventive Medicine for Elderly Patients In an era where medical advancements are constantly pushing the boundaries of what's possible, Dr. Ramon Leon stands out as a beacon of hope and expertise in the field of preventive medicine. What sets Dr. Ramon Leon apart is his holistic approach to preventive medicine. He recognizes that elderly patients require comprehensive care that goes beyond simply managing their medical conditions. He takes the time to understand each patient's unique circumstances, considering factors such as nutrition, exercise, mental health, and social support to develop a personalized preventive plan. In recent years, preventive medicine has gained significant recognition, with the elderly population being a focal point due to increasing life expectancy. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global life expectancy at birth in 2019 was 73.4 years1, indicating the pressing need to address the unique healthcare needs of older individuals. Dr. Ramon Leon's dedicated efforts in preventive medicine are crucial. Dr. Leon is quoted saying: “My mission is rooted in an unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for our elderly patients.” This commitment has propelled Dr. Leon into the forefront as a specialist in preventing and managing some of the “most common chronic medical problems in seniors, the most common in my 65 +patients being Dementia, Hypertension, Diabetes, COPD, and Arthritis.” Dementia affects a substantial number of elderly individuals and their families globally. According to Alzheimer's Disease International, an estimated 50 million people worldwide had dementia in 2020, and this number is projected to more than double by 2050 if adequate preventive measures are not taken2. Early intervention and lifestyle modifications, as championed by Dr. Leon, have shown promise in reducing the risk of dementia. Studies suggest that engaging in mentally stimulating activities can lower the risk of developing dementia by 30-50%. Hypertension and Diabetes are prevalent conditions among the elderly, posing significant health risks. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that approximately 63% of adults over the age of 60 in the United States have high blood pressure.3 Additionally, over 25% of people aged 65 and older in the U.S. have diabetes.4 Effective management of these conditions is crucial, as individuals with uncontrolled hypertension are four times more likely to die from a stroke and three times more likely

to die from heart disease. Arthritis is a prevalent issue affecting the elderly population. According to the Arthritis Foundation, arthritis affects over 54 million adults in the United States, with osteoarthritis being the most common form. By 2040, the number of adults with arthritis is projected to increase to 78 million.5 This highlights the pressing need for targeted interventions, such as those offered by Dr. Leon, to improve the lives of elderly individuals grappling with arthritis. In a world where the elderly population is growing at an unprecedented rate, the importance of specialists like Dr. Ramon Leon cannot be overstated. Through his unwavering dedication to preventive medicine, he is not only helping elderly patients lead healthier, more fulfilling lives but also paving the way for a brighter and healthier future for generations to come. Dr. Leon is a true pioneer in the field of preventive medicine, and his work continues to inspire and transform the world of healthcare for the elderly. THANKFUL PLACEMATS

T

By Alyssa Ingram

hanksgiving can be a stressful time for parents and families. So anything that gets you back to the meaning of the holiday is a plus. Thankful Placemats are a quick, easy and inexpensive way to connect your kids (and the whole family!) to being thankful for the people who matter most. As a bonus, it might keep your kids busy while you prepare that big dinner. Supplies are simple: paper you can write on (anything from printer paper to construction paper, ideally larger) and markers/crayons/colored pencils. That's it. If you want to add Thanksgiving stickers or decorations, you can certainly do so; dollar stores are a great place to find seasonal stickers. Have your kid write each dinner guest's name at the top of the page. Make sure they make a placemat for themselves, too. For little ones, you

can outline names in pencil and have them trace them. Older kids might want to make fancier lettering in different colors or draw something that reminds them of that person next to the name. It's also a great place to put Thanksgiving stickers or decorations if you like. Write the year somewhere on the page as well. Under each name, ask your child to write one reason they are thankful for that person. This can be as creative as they want, any reason they are thankful for that person. Little ones can dictate their answer to someone else or color a picture of why they are thankful. (For example, if your child loves that Uncle Dave takes them out for ice cream, they can draw an ice cream cone). Have the child write their name by their thankful moment. Ask each guest at your Thanksgiving dinner to contribute to

the placemats, too. Have them write why they are thankful for each person on all of the placemats. It leads to much thinking and discussion as people consider what they appreciate or value about friends and family. It's a lot of fun to have kids bring the placemats and pens around, help with the activity and learn more about being thankful. By the time the Thankful Placemats are completed, everyone should have a list of reasons why they are appreciated and valued by everyone attending the dinner. While you can use them as actual placemats, you can also take pictures of them as a memento or set them aside and keep them for years to come. Knowing why people are thankful for you and sharing why you are thankful for others is a beautiful way to enjoy the holiday and a great way to teach your children the meaning of Thanksgiving.

WITH GRANDCHILDREN By Amber Arevalos

randchildren are one of the greatest joys in our lives. We spoil them with love, affection and lessons. Some grandparents get the privilege of caring for them while their parents are working. Grandchildren are full of energy, curiosity and determination. There is a whole world for them to explore. No matter what age they reach, there is always a new challenge or obstacle to overcome. Who doesn’t want to be part of that journey? When we connect with our grandchildren, it can be the

There are a variety of activities to engage in with your grandchildren. Depending on their age, the activity can be more or less physical. It is a phase we all have to go through and learn to balance family and friends. So when you have that teenage grandkid at your home, you can also try sports activities or perhaps play a video game. We want to encourage more physical activities, but to connect with certain grandchildren, reaching them through their favorite activity can open them to try new things with you.

FINDING

A BALANCE BETWEEN SCHOOL AND ACTIVITIES By Elizabeth Madrie Hardin

T

he average American child’s day doesn’t end when school lets out. About 42 percent of school-aged children play sports, 28 percent are active in clubs, and 30 percent take lessons after school. These extracurricular activities are beneficial. Learning to work and play together with other children hones skills that school may not. A 2015 study published in the American Journal of Public Health highlights the importance of strong social and emotional skills. The study claimed that these skills are better indicators of a child’s future academic and career success than cognitive skills. A HEALTHY BALANCE Children can become overscheduled which can lead to stress. The key is finding a healthy balance between school and extracurricular activities. How do parents know how many activities their child should take part in? When it comes to sports, try to limit it to one sport per season. Remember that most after school sports involve both practices and games every week. The same goes for music lessons. Your child might only attend lessons one afternoon per week, but musicians need to practice. There is no “magic number” of activities that is best for children though. Every family is different. Take a look at your children’s schedule and see if they have some time for unstructured

play. Make sure that your family has time to spend together. Family meals are also important, so ensure you have time to sit down for dinner together, at least a few times per week. Work in enough time for homework and plenty of sleep. KNOWING WHEN TO CUT BACK Watch your child for cues. Joan Grayson-Cohen of Jewish Family Services warned that children who make excuses about not attending activities may be overscheduled. If they can never find their shin guards before soccer practice or if they are happy when practice is canceled, they might be ready for a break. Also, watch for a drop in grades, an inability to entertain themselves and fatigue.

LETTING CHILDREN CHOOSE There may be activities that you don’t want your children to quit. Psychiatrist Alvin Rosenfeld advised parents to categorize extracurriculars as required (like religious school) or optional. Let the child choose from the optional category. Another good rule is to require them to finish out the year or the season and then decide whether to take the activity up again next time.

pets Not Heeling • Leash Training: Begin with short, structured walks, rewarding your puppy for walking calmly by your side. • Use Treats: Keep treats handy to reward good behavior and lure your puppy back to your side when they stray. • Consistency: Be consistent with your expectations and training methods. Practice regularly to reinforce proper leash manners.

PUPPY TRAINING THE KEY TO A WELL-BEHAVED CANINE COMPANION

T

By Alyssa Ingram

o set the stage for a wellbehaved adult dog, it’s essential to start training your puppy from a young age. The most impressionable period for puppies, known as the critical socialization period, typically occurs between 3 and 14 weeks of age. Training should begin as early as 8 weeks old and continue throughout their life. Why Early Training Matters During the critical socialization period, puppies are like sponges, absorbing information about their environment and learning how to interact with people, animals and various situations. This is the time when they are most receptive to new experiences, making it an ideal window for training. Barking at Everyone • Socialization: Introduce your puppy to various people, places, and situations, rewarding calm and positive interactions. • Basic Commands: Teach “quiet” or “enough” commands, rewarding silence with treats.

• Desensitization: Gradually expose your puppy to situations that trigger barking, rewarding quiet behavior. Jumping on Everyone • Ignore It: Turn your back or fold your arms when your puppy jumps. Only give attention when all four paws are on the ground. • Teach “Off”: Use a command like “off ” to instruct your puppy to get down, rewarding with praise and treats when they comply. • Redirect Energy: Channel your puppy’s energy into a quick game of fetch or a short training session. Running Off • Leash Training: Use a leash and harness during walks and outdoor outings to maintain control. • Recall Training: Teach a reliable recall command like “come” using positive reinforcement and treats. • Secure Your Yard: Ensure your home and yard are escape-proof to prevent unauthorized adventures.

Tips for Successful Puppy Training • Positive Reinforcement: Use treats, praise and affection to reward desired behaviors. Positive reinforcement is more effective than punishment. • Consistency: Establish consistent rules and routines to help your puppy understand what is expected of them. • Short Sessions: Keep training sessions short and enjoyable, as puppies have limited attention spans. • Socialization: Expose your puppy to various people, animals and environments in a positive and controlled manner to prevent fear or aggression issues. • Patience: Remember that puppies are learning, and it takes time for them to grasp new concepts. Stay patient and avoid becoming frustrated. Professional Help If you encounter persistent behavior issues or feel overwhelmed, consider enlisting the help of a professional dog trainer or behaviorist. Starting puppy training early and addressing common behavior issues with positive reinforcement techniques will pave the way for a well-behaved and happy adult dog. Training is an ongoing process, so be prepared to invest time and effort into nurturing your puppy’s behavior throughout their development.

wellness Eat iron-rich foods Because your red blood cells need iron, supporting them by eating ironrich foods is valuable. Then they can manage the job of transporting oxygen for you. Poultry, meat, fish, leafy greens, legumes, apples, eggs, broccoli, baked beans, chickpeas and tofu are terrific iron sources. Nuts, seeds, figs and apricots also contain iron.

Exercise Regular exercise can increase blood vessels, so more exist to transport oxygen to your brain and aid clear thought. Walking is a great way to oxygenate your brain, although all physical activity will improve blood flow. Yoga and other mindful exercises like tai chi and qigong deepen breathing, and regular practice can improve oxygen intake. Carry them out in the morning to boost circulation and at night to help you relax.

How To Increase Your Blood Oxygen Level Breathe fresh air

B

ereft of oxygen, you would die. With that in mind, the health of your blood oxygen level is imperative. Your bloodstream transports oxygen to your brain and body's cells, and you need to maintain a healthy blood-oxygen balance for your body and brain to work well. If your level is irregular, you may become ill. Your GP can check whether you suffer from an imbalance, though, and these tips can help you increase your blood oxygen level when low. What is a normal blood oxygen level? The standard blood oxygen level range is 95% to 100%. Some chronic illness sufferers, such as people with pulmonary disease, asthma and emphysema, have lower levels, sometimes around 90%. An unexpected reading of 90% or below signals that you need medical help. Quit breathing carcinogens Smokers can increase their lung capacity by giving up cigarettes.

36

However, even non-smokers might inhale carcinogens without realizing and would benefit from quitting. Many scented candles, diffuser oils, perfumes and household cleaning products contain harmful chemicals, and switching to natural products can improve your health and increase your blood oxygen level. Do breathing exercises Lung experts suggest easy breathing exercises to open the airways and increase blood oxygen. Pursed lip breathing, for instance, involves breathing in through your nose and out through puckered lips. When you exhale, breathe out longer than you do when you inhale. As a result, you'll relax your abdominal muscles and enjoy a sense of calm well-being to boot. Deep belly breathing will increase your blood oxygen level, too. Inhale through your nose as if breathing into your belly. Hold your breath for a second or so and let the breath out of your nose slowly.

inspirehealthmag.com § #inspirehealthmag

It might seem obvious to open the windows and let in the fresh air to increase your blood oxygen, but it's easy to forget to do so. So habitually let the air stream through open doors and windows several times daily if you're at home. And remember to step outside to breathe sometimes too. Keep plants Plants create oxygen. Keeping them in your home and at work can help oxygenate the environment. Top oxygen producers include weeping figs, gerbera daisies, aloe vera, rubber plants and mother-in-law's tongue. Peace lilies are terrific for the bedroom because they expel oxygen at night, as do spider plants and orchids. To increase your blood oxygen level, make a few helpful lifestyle tweaks. Swap chemical-laden products for natural varieties and eat iron-rich foods. Take deep lungfuls of fresh air, exercise and oxygenate your surroundings with air-purifying plants.

Care Centers

Provide Physicians with a Great Work/Life Balance and Significant Opportunities for Growth By Romeo Reyes Legaspi, M.D. Just as Baby Boomers are aging into their senior years, America is facing a growing shortage of qualified physicians. The initial catalyst for the decline was the COVID-19 pandemic, as doctors left practices nationwide in response to long hours and burnout. Currently there are more than 54 million adults aged 65 and older, and that is projected to reach more than 80 million by 2040. Physician Burnout is High According to the Medscape 2023 “Physician Burnout and Depression” report, 57% of the physicians felt burned out, with internal medicine, emergency medicine and pediatric physicians among those most affected. Contributing factors included too many bureaucratic tasks, too many patients and too many work hours. Even with an assembly-line mentality at work for many overworked physicians, it’s still not enough. In fact, a 2022 study from the University of Chicago found doctors would need 26.7 hours each day to provide guideline-recommended primary care for their patients. If only there were a way to rethink the status quo, giving physicians more time with each patient, and making the work of a physician more satisfying. There is. Value-Based Care is the Answer At its heart is value-based care, a system that rewards good health outcomes rather than how many patients you can see and how many procedures you can get them to undergo. In other words, quality takes precedence over quantity. Also critical is working with an integrated care team, in which health care professionals such as pharmacists, nurses, behavioral-health specialists and care coordinators work together to see that all the patients’ needs are met. Back-office support, too, helps ensure that all the i’s are dotted and the t’s crossed. As an internal medicine physician with Conviva Care Center Deerfield Beach West, I am fortunate to have each of these advantages at my disposal, so I have time to develop deeper relationships with my patients that benefit their wellbeing as well as mine. There is a distinct work/life

balance that I find very appealing. I can relate to my professional colleagues, but my experience with Conviva has opened my eyes to a better way of practicing medicine that allows me to retain my passion for helping patients and maintain that work-life balance. My goal is to not only learn about my patients, but to make sure they are on the path to better health. I love what I do. There’s a personal standpoint that I find fulfilling as well. As a native of the Philippines, I appreciate members of the “Greatest Generation” who helped save my country from oppression during World War II. Some of my senior patients are veterans, and for me it’s an instant connection, because when I talk to them it reminds me every day of the sacrifices they made and how important it is to provide them with the best possible care. Conviva Offers Stability Conviva doctors work in a stable environment. I like being part of an established, secure business organization that continues to expand in the South Florida market, while offering great benefits and opportunities for personal growth. Conviva’s network is growing, and this provides physicians opportunities to work at different locations and experience the benefits of an organization that supports a care team model. Conviva has met and surpassed my expectations, because it’s a care model that offers holistic, senior-focused care, and every member of the team is engaged in a patient’s life. Medical teams at Conviva enjoy a long list of patient referrals. In fact, it’s not uncommon for a physician to treat the son or daughter of someone they treated many years before. I value this continuity. Our life’s work is our patients, and any day we help a patient is a good day. Seniors seeking care at a Conviva Care Center will see a physician experienced in caring for senior patients. Our staff genuinely cares about every patient’s well-being and routinely goes above and beyond to meet their needs. Our patients trust how we manage their care. Smaller patient panels and longer appointments allow me to build better relationships, and I feel more satisfaction, because I know my patients are being cared for in every way. Managing Hearing Loss Can Reduce the Risk of Dementia Studies have shown that untreated hearing loss is associated with an increased risk of dementia. Hearing loss makes it difficult for the brain to receive and retain spoken information. When this occurs, it can leave you feeling fatigued, forgetful, and more likely to withdraw from social situations.

What the Research Says The risk of dementia could be reduced by treating pre-existing conditions, such as hearing loss

Individuals wait an average of 10 years before seeking treatment for hearing loss

Older adults who wear hearing aids can likely reduce their risk of dementia in half over time*

To reduce the chances of cognitive decline and dementia, it is important that individuals with hearing loss seek help immediately. Our team can diagnose hearing loss and prescribe hearing aids as a management option.
