Welcome to Danesfield Manor School, Pre-Reception and Nursery.

Danesfield Manor School is a one form entry school educating boys and girls from the age of 2 – 11 years of age. We welcome families of all faiths and beliefs and enjoy promoting an awareness of cultures all around the world with the help of our whole community.

Our small class numbers mean pupils really get to know one another well, forming meaningful friendships with children not only in their own year group, but also with children all throughout the school. Likewise, our staff get to know every pupil well; treating them as if they were their own.

With our broad and balanced curriculum, strong values and growth mindset approach to learning, we empower our pupils with excellent knowledge, extensive vocabulary and innate confidence. We believe that a values based education enriches our teaching and learning, allows our pupils to achieve beyond their own expectations and prepares them

for their life-long journey beyond Danesfield. Our pupils learn to tackle challenges using our growth mindset approach; their resilience becomes stronger and their ability to cope with real life situations is another important part of our teaching and learning.

Our pupils are assessed regularly.

Staff identify where and how to support and challenge every child.

Pupils demonstrating talent in various subjects are recognised and stretched accordingly. Likewise, the support and strategies to overcome needs is also provided through our Learning Support and Challenge Team.

We help our families with the (sometimes daunting) senior school selection process by working together to carefully select a school that is right for their child and their family.

The purpose of our school development plan is to: Provide a shared vision for our school community, to enable the school to move forward in providing the highest possible education standards for our children. Aim To provide a broad, relevant education based on National Curriculum guidelines preparing pupils for the next step in their learning experience, i.e. Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1, Key Stage 1 to 2, Key Stage 2 to 3 – independent or maintained sector.

Values

Growth Mindset

Each month we focus on a value which is shared through assembly and in our curriculum. We encourage everyone to model the behaviour of our values in and out of school.

We follow Dr. Carol Dweck’s approach, on Growth Mindset, who is a researcher at Stanford University.

The values we explore at Danesfield on a two-year cycle are: Aspire, Rule of Law, Happiness and Enjoyment, Love, Cooperation, Freedom, Care and Compassion, Democracy, Excellence, Respect, Giving, Tolerance, Friendship, Belonging, Responsibility, Trust and Honesty.

Our pupils learn to tackle challenges using our Growth Mindset approach; their resilience becomes stronger and their ability to cope with real life situations is another important part of our teaching and learning. With determination and respect, our pupils will go on to shape the world!

Danesfield Manor School

Early years In our Early Years Centre we aim to give each child the best possible start in life. We strive to encourage each child to meet his or her individual potential, providing a firm foundation for future success.

At Danesfield Manor Early Years Centre children can join from the age of 2 years when they become a member of our Nursery room (subject to availability). The ratio of staff to pupils at this age is 1 adult to 4 children. We take every measure to ensure children build successful relationships with our staff across the Early Years Centre; this really helps them as they move on to the next room and stage of development. Activities in this room are suited to this age group and resourced accordingly.

lessons with our qualified swimming coach in our on-site heated indoor swimming pool and offsite visits to our magical Forest School. We also have a small onsite Forest School Area which is used throughout the academic year.

At 4 our children join the Reception class where they participate in a full week’s programme of foundation stage activities. Our two full-time members of staff work with the children to complete the Foundation Stage Profile ready to go into Key Stage 1 when they are 5.

Once children turn 3 they are challenged to take on new experiences in our Pre-Reception room including participation in weekly swimming

Children have the opportunity to make use of a free flow area to outside learning opportunities and a range of soft play activities.

Welcome to Prep at Danesfield Manor School During KS1 - Lower Phase years, we ensure that children are equipped with the tools and confidence to achieve in all areas of school life. We understand it’s important to have fun whilst learning – ensuring there is a strong emphasis on early development of basic skills in reading, writing and maths.

We ensure they develop at their own pace, being nurtured and supported by caring, professional staff. We are proud to have created a culture and framework that enables all children to fulfil their full potential in a happy, positive environment.

Building on the solid foundations set in Lower Phase (KS1), Upper Phase (KS2) focuses on developing the eagerness to learn and encourages a spirit of independence. In these years, our aim is to help produce confident and wellrounded individuals, whilst ensuring them the best possible education.

Pastoral care Every class at our school is represented on the School Council which meets half-termly to discuss development and new initiatives. In addition to addressing school-based issues the School Council annually chooses and supports a charity, leading on fund-raising events and communicating projects to the wider school community.

The children are encouraged to listen to each other and decide together on the choices to be made. The children follow a Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE) which enables them to develop speaking and listening skills and the capacity to make reasoned judgements. Speakers are invited into school to enhance this programme.

We have systems in place to monitor pupil progress enabling us to quickly identify a child who may be experiencing some difficulties or may need extra challenges within a subject.

We offer extension and support teaching within our school setting, liaising with parents and specialist teachers to ensure continued development.

Caring for the Whole Child Our school family is made up of children of different abilities, backgrounds, beliefs and cultures. We aim to enable all children to reach their potential in an atmosphere where they are taught that friendship and respect are valued.

As our communication with parents is regular and our door is always open, to maintain this ethos of equal opportunities and good relationships is straightforward.

A core part of school life at Danesfield Manor School Monitoring & Management of Learning Pupils’ attainment and progress is closely monitored using GL Assessments, Headstart (English) assessments and White Rose (Maths) assessments and a pupil online tracking tool called Educater.

Teacher assessment, (which is backed up by pupil testing) enables the School to monitor every pupil in their English and Maths thoroughly. The information we obtain from each pupil is recorded, reviewed and monitored regularly to enable the teachers to identify and address the individual needs of each child and support them accordingly. The data we obtain on every pupil enables the School to support and guide the individual families in choosing the right senior school for their child. All pupils have a talent, we help our pupils find their talents and gently encourage and support them to achieve their full potential, e.g. some of our pupils who are particularly strong in maths have been chosen to take part in external maths challenges against other local schools of which they have thoroughly enjoyed.

Supporting Children with Additional Needs

For those with more complex learning needs, we have a number of support systems in place. If you are concerned about your child’s learning, we would suggest meeting with the class teacher to discuss your worries. The class teacher or SENCo may observe your child over several sessions and, where needed, an Individual Support Programme (ISP) may be required.

Our SENCo is happy to recommend strategies and programmes to work with your child, both in school and at home.

Specialist Teacher Mrs Cresswell is our one to one literacy support teacher offering individualised programmes to address learning difficulties such as literacy acquisition (reading, writing and spelling), motor skills and Speech and Language. Mrs Cresswell is an experienced Reading Recovery practitioner and has a Dyslexia Diploma, enabling her to offer specialist dyslexia tuition.

Our goal is to develop self-awareness, independence and a growth mindset for all children. This is achieved by teaching in a multi-sensory, structured and cumulative way – targeting your child’s individual needs and encouraging them to play a conscious role in their learning using metacognitive strategies.

For most children, this may be a simple ‘catch up’ session in a small group with a member of our ‘Supporting Success Team’ alongside their classmates or a little support in lessons to fill any gaps they may have in their understanding or address any misconceptions they may have.

Celebrating Success We do not concentrate only on the here and now – how quickly a child can rush through a reading scheme, for example.

To prepare the citizens of tomorrow we must consider the world in which our children will live. It is essential that we build into our education programme opportunities to develop the intelligences and skills they will need.

Instead we devote our mornings primarily to mathematics and English studies and our afternoons to more practical lessons, with information and communication technology used as a tool in every subject. We supplement this with a wide range of before-school and after-school clubs so that children with a particular interest or talent can follow their pursuits to a much higher level. We offer modern languages, sport, swimming, music, art, dance, engineering, computing, drama, chess and cookery clubs. We also offer a Homework Club for Upper Phase with all pupils having daily access to our Breakfast Club and Superstars.

All main areas of learning follow the National Curriculum guidelines, but have the freedom to include more detail, breadth and interest in the schemes of work.
