It’s that time of year again… Are you off to Hylands Park on 18th and 19th August? Lucky you if you are, as a High Flying Bird told me that this year’s V Festival has one of the best line ups the festival has seen in years. On Saturday it’s the mighty Stone Roses and Noel Gallager’s High Flying Birds headlining. On the Sunday you can look forward to The Killers and Snow Patrol. There’s also the likes of Ed Sheeran, Friendly Fires, Dappy (I’m saying nothing) and The Ting Tings as well as Rita Ora, Tulisa and LMFAO.

If you’re a bit of an eighties music lover at heart, this could well be the year for you, with the return of the nutty boys, Madness, along with Happy Mondays, The Human League, The Proclaimers, The Stranglers, Inspiral Carpets and Tom Jones, who is also set to make the ladies swoon at Newmarket Nights this August.

If you’re staying over… Don’t think you can get away with being minimalist. Pack everything. Remember baby wipes, a wind-up mobile phone charger and enough bottled water to waterlog Wimbledon.

Dress for the worst. Come on, it’s going to be muddy . This isn’t Jeremy Kyle, so don’t worry about adorning tracky bottoms and an anorak, but something to keep the cold out, something to keep the rain off and some sturdy footwear (try Hunter wellies) along with plenty of outfits to change into if the mud gets too much. Take a ‘plus one’ – someone whose enthusiasm, reliability and stamina match your own. It’s always good to have someone watching your back - and your phone while you go to the loo. Do remember to record the festival highlights. Newsflash — music festivals aren’t the best places to actually listen to music. Set your recorder for the highlights shows to catch what you missed. Embrace the festival spirit. The world won’t end if you ruin your diet or have to walk around looking bedraggled for a day or so. Wear your mud with pride, and have fun!

Out and About in Southend! May of this year saw an unfortunately wet and windy Southend Spring Garden Show; however the All About Gardening Show which takes place in August has a more certain chance of brighter weather and with it, a beautiful array of summer plants and bulbs. Keen gardeners who are local to the Southend area might be interested to know that the Southend Garden Show will return to Garon Park Friday 17th till Sunday 19th August for an event that plans to be bigger and better than previous years, with more nurseries, garden companies, landscape designers and floral experts than ever before!

Must Listen! The View – Cheeky for a Reason

The View stumbled onto the music scene at a time when all you needed to do to guarantee airplay and a hit album was to produce cheeky little ditties with catchy, quintessentially English lyrics. Many a Brit band, including The Fratellis, Kooks and even Arctic Monkeys all rode this particular wave, and many of them were also drowned by it. The View seem to be hanging on in there with Cheeky for a Reason.

Cheeky for a Reason is The View’s fourth album, after the Mercury-nominated Number One debut Hats off to the Buskers, the Top 10 follow-up Which Bitch and 2011’s Bread and Circuses. Kyle Falconer described the album as being ‘Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, as done by The Clash’ which, for most people, is quite hard to imagine. The NME begs to differ, apart from ‘Lean on My World’ and slightly bland ‘Sour Little Sweetie.’ The production is crisp and clean, the album

Essex and the Not-so-Single Girl When I was single and thinking about the list of qualities I wanted in my ideal man, near the top of the list was spontaneity. I was seeing someone for a while before we met, who would quite happily just take off somewhere on a whim, because we hadn’t been there before, and I loved that. So when The Man casually asked if I fancied a trip to Amsterdam last month, I squealed in delight and nodded my head vigorously. I’ve been to Amsterdam twice now. It’s rained both times. The first time was in November so I kind of expected it. But in July? I’m just glad I took a brolly. The entire weekend was spent dodging from café to bar to restaurant in between downpours. We’re not talking a bit of rain, or an occasional shower, either. I’m talking about full on, relentless and torrential rain with occasional interludes of thunder and lightning. We walked, and walked and walked. Amsterdam is a lot bigger than I’d remembered it and the potential for getting very lost was immense. We did get lost a few times, but luckily The Man is a cheery sort of guy who doesn’t get stroppy with me when I say for the umpteenth time, “I think it must be down here.” We always managed to find our way back to the hotel

somehow! I’m massively impressed with Amsterdam trams, too. They were still running every ten minutes at midnight, handy for nights out at the Leidseplein.

muttering loudly, “I’m too wet and in too much of a bad mood to worry about freaking p*ssy little hairdryers on wheels!!” Luckily for me, The Man finds my

There’s a certain pecking order I noticed in Amsterdam. Bikes have priority everywhere. Pedestrians have to compete with whatever’s coming from every other direction and then run like hell. We were counting the types of vehicle that tried to take me out (I think I had a death wish) and the list includes horses, pedalos, a street sweeper that stalked me and even an unfeasibly large and very quiet stealth disabled buggy. There were buzzy mopeds, bicycles with dogs attached and children in a trailer, trams, buses…but not that many cars. I didn’t lose my temper until I was nearly taken out by a moped during a particularly persistent downpour on our last day, and carried on walking despite the rider’s obvious annoyance,

mini-tantrums quite endearing, so we managed to have a really good time, and laugh about most of the soakings we endured. We both loved Amsterdam – the mad roller skating men in suits, buskers that ranged from the sublime double bass player jumping around like a loon and still keeping time, to the ridiculous woman accordion player who played the same note repeatedly for about an hour. The atmosphere is chilled and relaxed (probably something to do with the aromas emanating from the coffee shops) and hopefully we’ll go back again… when it’s dry!

Red hair seems to fade quickly, and when you’re spending money on dye treatments it can be quite disappointing to see the vibrancy of your colour fading fast.

Aromatherapy to help transform your Bedroom to your Boudoir by Louise Green MIFPA www.vitalityaromatherapy.co.uk

Aromatics have been used throughout history to promote relaxation, enhance romance, boost the libido and create a sensual atmosphere. Research has established that smelling essential oils used in Aromatherapy, influences the Limbic System and can bring about changes in the brain’s chemistry, affecting our mood and emotions. Some essential oils are considered to have aphrodisiac properties. You can use a single natural aroma or create blends according to your fragrance preferences. Essential oils can easily be used at home in diffusers, linen and body mists, baths and massage oils set to the scene for a romantic night in. Precious floral oils appeal to most women and are generally calming, sensual and alleviate feelings of anxiety. Woody oils blend well with florals, provide a base note to a blend and have a unisex appeal. Citrus oils have a refreshing and uplifting effect and can help lighten the aroma of a blend of heavier and sweeter florals and woods. Spice oils can be used in moderation to boost energy.

Sandalwood (Santalum austrocaledonicum) Sandalwood is used in many perfumes. It has a relaxing effect on the nerves and helps alleviate feelings of stress and tension. It can help release the brain from the mental chatter and is often recommended for meditation as it

encourages a feeling of serenity.

Patchouli (Pogostemon cablin) Patchouli divides opinion as many people are not keen on its musky, earthy aroma. It is soothing, grounding, and anti-depressant and can help reconnect a busy person to a forgotten sensual side of themselves.

Ylang Ylang (Canaga odorata) The exotic sweet, heady, aroma of Ylang Ylang can be overpowering and like Patchouli is best used in small amounts as it is tenacious and intense. However the aroma has a seductive quality and is a renowned aphrodisiac. Sweet Orange, Grapefruit or Bergamot blend well with Ylang Ylang and Sandalwood.

Jasmine (Jasminum grandiflorum) Jasmine is traditionally blended with Sandalwood in many Indian preparations. It soothes anxiety, brings confidence and optimism and helps improve our mood and energy if we are feeling apathetic.

Rose (Rosa damascena) Rose is often known as the queen of essential oils. Most people know the exquisite pleasure of inhaling the aroma of a fragrant rose and we all associate roses with the flower of love. A few drops of Rose and Jasmine in Rose Water in a spritzer bottle makes a gorgeous natural body mist.

Cardamon (Ellataria cardamomum) Cardamon is a warming tonic to the mind and body. Other spices such as ginger and black pepper are also invigorating when we are lacking in motivation or energy but can prove irritant or too “hot” for sensitive skins. Cardamon has a lovely intriguing aroma.

When people ask me what I do and I tell them I’m a Clinical Hypnotherapist, I tend to get one of two reactions; apprehension and fear or interest and intrigue. The fearful people always make their excuses and a quick getaway because they’re worried if they look me in the eyes for too long they’ll be hypnotised on the spot. Whereas the others usually ask me lots of questions because they are absolutely fascinated and want to learn more. The fear comes as no surprise to me, as most people only know about hypnosis because of what they’ve heard about stages shows. They’ve either seen one, heard about one or know somebody who has but they’ve rarely actually participated themselves. We’ve all heard those funny stories about the people who have been up on stage clucking like a chicken or doing some other ridiculously daft act which had the audience in fits of laughter. These people usually come off the stage and tell everyone that they ‘were under’ and that they ‘didn’t know what they were doing’ but that’s just not true. They were totally in control at all times and always knew exactly what they were doing. The hypnosis simply gives them the excuse to cover up any embarrassment they might be feeling once they get off the stage and rejoin their friends. Of course, if these people have never experienced stage

hypnosis for themselves then they believe every word and this just fuels the myth that it is something wacky, woo woo and not for the faint hearted. When actually it couldn’t be further from the truth. There is no such thing as ‘a hypnotised feeling’ and most people actually feel quite normal when they are hypnotised! What you won’t necessarily notice is the Stage Hypnotist carefully selecting the people who they feel will make the best showmen. Oh and just for the record, that certainly doesn’t involve those people who don’t like to be the centre of attention or entertain others. It is true that some people are more reserved until they get up on stage but when you think about it, if you’ve volunteered to go up there, what are the chances of you refusing to play along and do what you are asked once you’re there? Even if you’ve not been to a show you kind of know what you’re letting yourself in for and that is to do funny things and make people laugh. Plus hypnosis lowers our inhibitions and increases confidence. Now here’s the thing, Paul McKenna, Stage Hypnotists and Clinical Hypnotherapists all use the same hypnosis – the only difference is that Stage Shows are purely for entertainment purposes whereas Clinical Hypnotherapists use Hypnotherapy to help their clients achieve their goals and be the best they can be.

We all go into hypnosis just before we wake up and just before we go to sleep. Have you ever been driving along on a route you know well and then suddenly realised that you are nearly at your destination but can’t remember the last few miles? Or watching the television and got so engrossed that you didn’t hear the phone ringing straight away. In fact, the chances are you are reading this article right now and aren’t even bothered by anything going on around you. So you see hypnosis is actually a very safe, normal and natural state of mind that we all go in and out of every day of our lives. There is absolutely nothing to fear. It isn’t magic, you don’t have to be a special sort of person to hypnotise people or indeed be hypnotised, you just have to want to be. I should mention that when hypnosis is used on its own it does nothing more than create a calm, relaxed state of mind at best. It is the actual ‘therapy’ that is carried out whilst the client is in the hypnotised state – known as ‘Hypnotherapy’ that is the important part. However, most people do experience some very pleasant side effects afterwards and find that they: • • •

Feel more positive and confident. Get a good night’s sleep. Have an overall feeling of well-being that last for a good while afterwards.

So if you are smart you’ll still be reading this article now and will be keen to find out more. In the coming months, I’ll be revealing more about hypnosis and how Hypnotherapy can help you use the power of your subconscious mind to maximise your performance, wellbeing and success. In the meantime, feel free to visit my websites: www.clairerich-therapy.co.uk www.thewaytoaricherlife.com to find out how I could help you realise your true potential and find the way to a richer life.

RED INSPI

OFFER

INSPIRED COMPETITION Have you been inspired by Stuart’s wise words? Have you always wanted to see what it would be like to have your very own personal trainer who could help you reach your fitness goals, and maybe give you a supportive nudge with your nutrition, too?

G N I N I A TR

For 1 MONTH

Wonder no more, because one lucky Inspired reader will find out – Stuart is offering one month’s FREE personal training, based on two sessions per week. If you’d like an opportunity to sample personal training for yourself, simply go to our website www.inspiredessex.co.uk to enter your name, address and contact details, and tell us in less than 100 words why you need a personal trainer. GOOD LUCK!

Plateau? What plateau?

I hope everyone has been enjoying the weather - I know I have (more time for training) and if that hasn’t already made you so disgusted that you’ve turned the page, I’ll tell you all about plateaus and how to overcome them. A plateau is just a sticking point in your training. We’ve all been there; it’s the jock who has been benching 100kg for three months and just can’t go heavier or the gym bunny who can’t get past her running personal best. I use those analogies loosely as I know plenty of women that bench 100kg! It could just be that your training has become boring and that the workouts no longer interest you. In either instance you are stuck, but the good thing is Aunty Stu is here to help. Here are some ideas for you to try and hopefully we can grease those wheels again.

Idea 1: STOP Stop training completely for a week. Most people that train frequently think this is like being told to chop their own legs off but nine times out of ten when you’re stuck in your training it’s because you are training too much. Your body needs to rest and without it we don’t function. Ladies and Gents, this won’t make you drop four stone of muscle and you won’t get fat. In fact, you’ll probably find that when you go back to your training you’re so eager that the exact opposite happens, but as a rule, if you train more than four times a week then you need to take a week off every three months.

Idea 2: The Change-Up! Our bodies are the products of millions of years of evolution and natural selection. We adapt, and we do it very well. So when we do the same exercises for months, even years at a time what will our bodies do? Of course, they just get used to it. If humans can survive an ice age then we will soon adapt to adding an

12 PAGE | AUGUST 2012 ISSUE 16 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk

extra 10kg to a bench press! Change it to a dumb-bell press and get off the treadmill and on to the rower. If it works for the biggest athletes in the world it will work for you.

Idea 3: Diet I talk about this subject quite a bit but 65% of getting in shape is diet, 30% is training and 5% is rest. So make sure you have kept the last two months Inspired magazines and read through my articles which give you a good basis on how to structure your eating. On that note I will love you and leave you. You never know, by the next time we speak we may all have nice tans from all the sunshine ;-) If you need any help just contact me. Healthy, Happy Holidays! It’s a cliché but it’s true – a third of Brits end up poorly when they go abroad. One Brit who is meticulously careful about her travel health is The Queen – it just wouldn’t do if she fell ill and had to miss a Royal Banquet with a gippy tummy. Her top tips for avoiding holiday tummy were: never eat salads, shellfish or watermelon. Here’s a few more to keep healthy on holiday.

1. Get used to the local food slowly. It’s good to try new things and the Brits who go abroad and want chips with everything are just embarrassing, but you don’t have to try everything at once.

2. Street food is a big part of some countries’ culture but be careful – if it’s been lazing in the sun all day it could be full of airborne germs and bugs.

4. Drink lots of water, bottled water, to avoid dehydration. It’s easy to drink the tap water just once when you’re in a hurry but really, just don’t…

If you’re travelling, an ideal product to pack in your suitcase is dry shampoo to freshen up on the go. Simply spray on the roots and rub through with your fingers to avoid the tell-tale grey residue for an easy way to keep your hair looking fresh.

The key to holiday hair is making sure it’s low maintenance. Boho waves are a great summer trend and are easy to achieve. After washing your hair, tie your hair into a top-knot and leave to dry naturally. Once dry, undo the top-knot and run your fingers through the length of your hair to break up the curls and spritz with shine spray for a glossy finish. The wet-look was all over catwalks and is an ideal holiday hairstyle, especially if you’re hitting the beach. Spritz the hair with Berber Oil Light Radiance Spray and comb through – the Argan Oil in this spray will help you to achieve that glossy catwalk look in seconds, as well as repair any damage caused by the sun or sea water.

Hair accessories are a quick and easy way of dressing up your hair in a hurry. Flowers are big news this season so why not experiment with floral hair garlands and fresh flowers for a really pretty summer look. Holidays are a great time to experiment with colour. The colour trend has been going strong for a while now and it’s set to continue right through the summer. Dip dye, colour flashes, and pink and violet toners are bang on trend. Why not replicate this look and add pink tones through the front of the hair for a really subtle nod to this trend. I recommend using Crazy Color in Marshmallow for a semi-permanent colour that will wash out when your holiday is over and it’s time to return to the office!

Fashion Supports Honey Bees Ten things you can do to help save Bees Bees are so cute – and it makes me sad to think that the bee population is dwindling. Bees are vital to the eco-system and five species of bee have already become extinct since the 1950s.

These adorable Liberty print, bee charm bracelets might help! They’ve been designed and made by London based British designer label Cinderela B. and half the profits from the sale of the bracelets goes to the BBKA, the UK’s leading organisation supporting honey bees and beekeepers.

Rachel Jackson, founder of Cinderela B, explains why she chose to support the BBKA: “The beauty of nature is very important to me and I try to reflect that in the design of my jewellery. Honey bees play such a massive role in helping to keep nature in balance so we wanted to do our bit to help ensure that they continue to thrive.” Bracelets are available online at www.LoveHoneyBees.co.uk

Two designs have been specially chosen for the bracelets – on sale for a limited period. Each bracelet costs £19.95 and comes with a choice of silver or gold plated bee charm. The bracelets are presented in a pretty pouch and make a great gift, celebrating the beauty of honey bees and flowers whilst also helping support and protect honey bees.

Looking for a quick and easy wardrobe update? Here’s a really simple way to make a backless summer top. This design works brilliantly with all sorts of fabrics, from crisp cottons and silk dupion to printed chiffon and crepe. I often use sarongs for their beautiful vibrant prints - and you have enough fabric in one sarong to make both designs! Cut your piece of fabric 50cm x 130cm and hem it all the way around. If you are using a sheer fabric like chiffon or sarong fabric be careful not to stretch it as you sew it. If you don’t want to hem, you can fray the edges or if you have the facility on your sewing machine you can use a picot edge (the type you see on scarves) or zig zag on a trim like lace.

Gather the fabric across the narrow width in the centre to about 4 or 5cm and drape this round your neck. Now tie a piece of ribbon round your waist and tie it at a bow at the back over the top of the fabric. 1.5 metres is a good ribbon length. You can use any width of ribbon, satin, grosgrain, organza or cord. This design is open to the waist but if you want to stitch up part of the front or cross it over slightly so it’s less revealing, just fit it to you how you are comfortable. Pin it onto the ribbon then stitch it in place.

can use ribbon or a plaited leather thong necklace or chunky chain. Fold the fabric in half over the necklace, tie your ribbon at the back, pin your design to the ribbon then stitch it in place. The designs shown are from the Elizabeth Mulholland fashion studio in Bury St Edmunds. We’re open all day Saturday, and weekdays are by appointment. You can also view our collection online. Prices start from £15 www.Elizabeth-mulholland.com

For the second design you only need a piece of fabric 50cm x 100cm. Again hem all the edges. I’ve used a silver choker in my design but you

See yourself in print? If you think you can’t do the bold prints that have been permeating the fashion world this season, think again. Before it’s too late and we have to put out hardly-worn summer clothes away until next year (it’s alright, nobody will know they are from this summer, we didn’t get a chance to wear them very often) give some of the seriously sexy tribal prints a go. Print trends this season have an ethnic edge. Tribal, animal and Aztec influences are everywhere, showing up in everything from smart suit jackets to bangles. Organic browns, deep reds and earth tones are the most popular colours, although brights have their place too. Washed-out palettes tone down all-over prints on jeans and tailored trousers. Placement prints in bold colours command slouchy t-shirts in neutral base colours. Textured fabrics such as chiffon and crepe manipulate the reflection of light in different forms on surface pattern, and prints come in a range of scales to suit all body shapes. River Island’s bold, directional SS12 collection includes these printed Rihanna Suit Trousers. The colour contrast creates a vertical, striped effect, perfect for lengthening legs. Those brave enough could opt for the matching blazer available too. Printed-silk harem trousers look fresh off the plane from a far-flung paradise, and abstract animal prints are framed with contrast black edging on blouses. Leopard print has been given a classy makeover by Hobbs in the form of this shirt. The painterly style gives a fresh edge to an old favourite.

Snakeskin seems to be undergoing a massive revival after years in Kat Slater fashion hall, too. Snakeskin was spotted on the London Fashion Week catwalks, featuring in high end designer collections from Versace to House of Holland. Get Summer Savvty - By Rosie Orgles So we’ve hit August, our peak summer month, and it’s been a long old wait for a glimpse of sunshine. Surrounding ourselves with the floral patterns, pastel candy colours and exotic prints that have filled the high street stores is so far about as summery as we have felt. But fear not, there is still a glimmer of hope and we need to be prepared for when the sun does decide to put his hat on. Some of you will be jetting away to a place where your anoraks are no longer required and to hopefully catch some rays, but do you want to buy a whole new summer wardrobe that you won’t wear again back home? I doubt it. Whether you’re off to the White Isle or Isle of Wight, your wardrobe needs to be versatile. You want a collection of pieces that you can also wear at home and that make you feel summery come rain or shine, even if you have to team them with a cardi or jacket!

Nadine Jumpsuit £38 Accessorize www.accessorize.com

As we have realised over the last few ‘summers’, here in the UK we are not guaranteed good weather. So the best way to be prepared for that odd hot weekend is with a few staple on-trend items that will add a ray of sunshine to your wardrobe.

Another versatile summer essential is the maxi skirt. Beautiful with wedges or flats, the maxi skirt can be worn with various tops for different effect. A boobtube or vest is ideal when you’re sun-kissed on holiday, then with a pretty blouse or some of your warmer A/W tops back home.

The perfect item for this transition from abroad to British summer is the jumpsuit. They are bang on-trend, very easy to wear and can help you achieve lots of different looks, much like the maxi dress. Worn on its own with a pair of wedges it can create a gorgeous simple look for an evening on holiday but this elegant look can also be flaunted back home by just teaming the jumpsuit with a blazer. The jumpsuit can also see you through into the cooler months by swapping your wedges for a pair of shoe-boots and even wearing a pair of tights underneath. It is not only an evening outfit, as a jumpsuit with your favourite flat sandals and trusty denim jacket can create a casual but stylish look ideal for a summer barbeque.

Normally summer wear is short and skimpy but longer length items, such as the jumpsuit and maxi skirt, are classier but still as summery. They are ideal to cover up when you are still feeling a little pasty and give you a graceful but flirty look.

Just because you may not be braving it and revealing all, it doesn’t mean you should feel too covered up or dark. Colourful jewelry i the easiest way to add a hint of summer to whatever you’re wearing. Chunky necklaces, bangles and rings are a great way to inject your regular outfits with colour. These additions will help give your work outfits some oomph too, meaning you’re always ready for a summer lunch or after work cocktails.

The final item is the most versatile of them all and a clever addition to your wardrobe. Scarves and sarongs are pretty similar right? Except you wear one around your neck and one around your body but as an item they look

Coloured jeans are this summer’s must-have. Perfect at home in this cooler weather, and available in a rainbow of colours, they can be worn, like all your other jeans, with almost any top you own. When worn with a simple t-shirt and pumps they give you a very casual but ultra fashionable look. Ideal for wearing to the airport and ensuring you’re in the holiday spirit from the moment you leave the house. ‘Jegging’ versions are also out there if you want ultimate comfort for your flight or just an extra bit of flexibility. To turn this look from casual to catwalk-ready, wear these coloured jeans with your heels and leather jacket for a more sophisticated look. They’re also perfect with a tee, mac and wellies for the festival season but don’t then be tempted to put them away, they will see you right through to winter just add your boots and a chunky knit.

pretty much the same. So be sure to buy a big enough scarf and you’ve bagged yourself a sarong too. That’s two for the price of one and we all love a bargain! Wear as a sarong on holiday, as a skirt, boobtube dress or halterneck over your swimwear to cover up on the beach or around the pool. Then when you’re home wear it for its intended use, as a scarf. A scarf is the best way to add patterns and prints to your outfits and will come in useful as an extra bit of warmth when you need it. Wherever you’re going, whoever you’re meeting and whatever the weather, these versatile staple items will ensure you have a summer wardrobe that is not willing to be pushed to the back of your cupboard after your holiday but that can be relied upon throughout the summer months and beyond.

Clueless about the Olympics?

How very 007 Everyone would love to get their hands on some of James Bond’s super-cool spy gadgets. It’s not an Aston Martin on this occasion, but we reckon it’s nearly as cool. The Wiki Spy Watch is not just a watch; it’s a digital video recorder too. How often do you miss a moment for some prime espionage because you don’t have your video recording equipment to hand? Well The Wiki Spy Watch is the answer to all your spying prayers and could be direct from Q himself! Not only is it a rather stylish watch but it’s also a digital video recorder with a whole 2GB of memory. With that you can record around 120 minutes of video footage including audio - using the 0.3 megapixel sensor through the camera lens which is cleverly disguised behind the number 2 on the clock face. Very 007. Try not to be too much like Bond though; not everyone will want to be filmed and you could find yourself in hot water. Price: £69 www.prezzybox.com

Tablet Pillow

You’re not alone – a new survey has revealed that the majority of Brits have quite a limited understanding of what goes on inside the Olympic stadium and 84 per cent have no more than a basic knowledge of the rules and points systems of most Olympic sports.

Ahhh…bliss. No more uncomfortable surfing and sore knees, this pillow is filled with beads so that it can adjust to whichever surface you’re browsing on, whether it’s a lap, a table or on your knees in bed.

The five least-known sports, with an overwhelming percentage of British people not knowing the rules at all, are: Greco-Roman wrestling, taekwondo, freestyle wrestling, handball and canoeing. Unsurprisingly, the five sports with which British people are most familiar are the ubiquitous events: football, athletics, tennis, swimming and badminton.

The tablet slots into the tab at the bottom for hands free use. It also acts as a case for your tablet - just slot it into the pocket at the back. The silicone pattern on both sides makes it non slip. The cover can be removed and washed. Price: £29.95 www.hirstandhirst.co.uk

Katie “Curly”, the brains behind the new app, says: “During a sports-packed summer like this, we can find ourselves going nuts about events we don’t normally watch. Maybe it’s not as surprising as it first seems that so many people are in the dark about sports like rhythmic gymnastics or fencing when they’re so rarely seen worldwide.” ‘Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports’ might be the answer – the new app is the perfect on-the-go companion for this jam-packed summer of sport. It features all this summer’s events, from cricket to canoeing, golf to gymnastics, presented completely jargon-free, demystifying the rules and offering a wealth of weird and wonderful stories behind each event. In fact, the app acts like a knowledgeable friend sitting by your side. To find out more information about the new “Curly’s Pocket Guide to Sports” app, visit: www.curlyspocketguide.com

Pit Stop grooming treatments Spa InterContinental and Lee Kynaston, one of the UK’s most experienced male grooming experts, have joined forces to develop a menu of fast, effective treatments exclusively for the modern man. Using Elemis skincare products for men and designed to the specific needs of male skin, each treatment promises rapid results and attention to detail. Whether you need to look your best before an important business meeting, want to unwind after it, need a pre-date pit-stop, or just want to combat jetlag after a long flight, there’s a specially-designed treatment for you. Lee Kynaston is an award-winning journalist and former magazine editor with over 20 years’ experience in the industry (including an eight year stint as Grooming Editor of Men’s Health) so he should know what he’s talking about when it comes to making men look fantastic. He said: “As a grooming writer I’ve been lucky enough to try some of the best treatments in the world, but none have really delivered quite what I wanted, which is practicality and purpose. This is why I am so excited about helping create Spa InterContinental’s new tailor-made treatments for men. I’m also thrilled to be incorporating the Spa’s unmissable dry flotation bed into some of them!” Spa InterContinental manager, Radhika Khandke, says “We are finding that our male guests are looking for solutions which help to really invigorate and revitalise their skin, particularly before a special occasion or whilst they are travelling. They are often on a tight schedule, so we have a wide range of ‘pit-stop’ treatments to suit any timeframe”. Spa InterContinental ‘Pit-stop’ treatments are priced from £90 to £135 www.elemis.com wwwspaintercontinental.com

If you’re reading this then the chances are that you are interested in grooming, but interest doesn’t necessarily breed knowledge. Thankfully we can call on the expertise of Lab Series, who have collaborated with Craig the Barber, one of Hollywood’s go-to groomers, and an expert in both classic barbering and modern looks. To accompany his 10 expert tips Craig has chosen his Lab Series favourites to help you get the rights results. Here are his Top ten grooming tips:

Tip 1 – Sun Block. Don’t be fooled by the kids down the shore: over-tanning is the surest way to look old before your time. But even if you avoid the beds, you should still limit your everyday exposure by wearing a light sunscreen or moisturizer with a solid SPF.

Tip 2 - Hair Removal. The phrase “manscaping” is totally dated, but it is no less true that men, particularly, as they age, have body and facial hair worth removing. We’re talking nose, ears and eyebrows primarily, but if there’s a weird stray hair peeking up through your collar, go ahead and snip that too.

Tip 5 – Shine Prevention. Everyone’s skin produces oil, but if you’re worried about giving off a blinding glare, then use an oil-controlling moisturizer for a fresh matte finish.

Tip 6 – Skin Tone. This is an issue that touches on some areas already covered, from sun exposure to fatigue. Nonetheless, discoloration and blotchiness can ruin your day (and make you look much older), so be sure to add a facial serum to your regimen to keep things bright and even.

Tip 7 – Hand cream. Keep your hand cream, er, handy at all times. We’re not talking baby’s butt, but smooth, even hands will give you a confident shake, and help keep skin that takes a serious beating feeling healthy and fresh.

Tip 8 – Hairstyle. Your hair is something that can date your style in an instant—if you haven’t changed your look in a while, then it’s time to pick a new cut. Choose something current and age-appropriate that will work with your overall technique.

Tip 9 – Teeth Whitening.

Tip 3 - Eye Cream. The eyes are windows to the soul, and the under-eye is the window to how much sleep you’re getting. If it’s not enough (and who over the age of 5 is getting enough sleep?), then you should definitely use a quality eye cream to reduce puffiness and wrinkles.

Tip 4 – Shaving Solutions. Whether you shave everyday or every once in a while, in-grown hairs and razor burn are familiar enemies. Combat them by exfoliating pre-shave (helps fight in-grown hairs), and then using a cold washcloth as a compress after shaving (to cut down on the burn).

You don’t need to hit up the orthodontist to get a little extra glow in your smile—and that glow can make a huge difference in how you’re perceived. Over the counter products that can be found at your local drugstore are perfect for improving those chompers.

Tip 10 – Breath. Cup your hand, and breathe into it. If you don’t like what you smell, you can rest assured no one else will. Having the breath of a champion is an aspect of grooming that’s easy to overlook—never leave home without your spray, mints or gum.

Mantaray Swimshorts £25 each at Debenhams

Gentleman’s Den M&S blue harbour floral swim shorts £19.50

Swimwear shopping is something that terrifies a lot of people. Baring all that flesh after a long, cold winter (and very wet spring) can be a daunting prospect. Angela Poplett, Lakeside’s Personal Shopper, is here to help the men of Essex find the right swimwear to make them feel great for summer – and avoid looking like a typical Brit aboard! “The best place to start when shopping for swimwear is to work out which are your best assets! Highlighting those and drawing attention away from the rest will boost your confidence so you’re ready to hit the beach in style. “For men, I’d never recommend anything smaller than swim shorts for the beach so the trendiest option is a pair of board shorts (think surfers, bright colours and tropical prints). “Marks and Spencer has bright, printed pairs for £22.50 and I love block colour board shorts too. “For shorter men, the key is to avoid shorts that are too long as they’ll make your legs look shorter than they actually are. “Lastly, whatever your style, height or size, always opt for a pair with an inside support. “For more summer style advice, visit Lakeside’s Personal Shopper. She’ll give you advice on which styles of swimwear will suit you best so you’ll look hot for summer.” Visit www.lakeside.uk.com to find out more or book an appointment by calling 01708 684 351.

The Ray-Ban Story

In their 75th year, Ray-Ban who have brought you the iconic Wayfarer, Aviator and the Clubmaster have stood the test of time and are as popular today as ever but their ride to the top wasn’t as smooth as you might think.

1937 Founded in 1937 by Bausch & Lomb, the Ray-Ban brand was initially created for the U.S. Army Air Corp. With pilots at the time suffering (sometimes permanent) eye damage, Bausch & Lomb were asked to create lenses that would protect aviators from the sun’s powerful glare. Their solution was the Anti-Glare Lens, patented on May 7th 1937. The first iconic Ray-Ban design, it featured ultra lightweight gold-plated frames, green mineral glass lenses designed to protect from infrared and UV rays, and a look that was slick and masculine enough to fit in on any army base. The shades were a hit, earning Ray-Bans the moniker ‘Aviator Glasses’; now a catch-all term for sunglasses that have a similar design to the shades that started it all.

1952 On their journey from the military to the mainstream, Ray-Ban broke from the metal frame mould in 1952, when Raymond Stegeman created their first hard plastic frame design, The Wayfarer. Initially intended for men, the now legendary shades soon crossed over into women’s fashion, as both genders became bewitched by the Wayfarer’s classic style.

A breakthrough for eyewear design, which had been strictly metal frame-oriented, Wayfarers now rank in every ‘design classics’ list, and with good reason. Their ability to flatter every face shape helped Wayfarers gain mass appeal, right across the socio-economic divide – you were as likely to see a pair framing the President’s face as you were to see them perched on the nose of the average American teen.

1960s Gaining popularity, thanks to famous faces like Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Andy Warhol, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and JFK, Wayfarers had become a bona fide classic with hipsters, squares, teenyboppers and beatniks alike by the 1960s. President John F. Kennedy Sails Aboard Yacht “Manitou” – wearing Ray-Ban Wayfarers

1970s-1981 Come the 70s, however, the brand’s popularity was on the wane, with disco hustling them off the dancefloor in favour of more OTT styles and design houses like YSL and Dior entering the eyewear market for the first time. By 1981, sales were down to a measly 18,000 pairs. With the brand’s fortunes hanging in the balance, Ray-Ban decided to make a serious push for revival, with staggering results.

1982 Far from being an organic comeback, it was a calculated product placement campaign that would revive the classic brand, with a lucrative deal signed in 1982 with Unique Product Placement. In exchange for $50,000 a year, Ray-Bans would be placed in over 60 movies and TV shows annually. A year later, following a starring role adorning Tom Cruise in box-office smash “Risky Business”, sales leapt to 360,000. The Wayfarer-clad Breakfast Club, Miami Vice, Madonna and Michael Jackson followed. By 1986, Wayfarer sales had reached a staggering 1.5 million.

1990s Come the grungy 90s, with all things 80 being deemed uncool, sales slumped once more as wraparound shades from brands like Oakley came to the fore. Ray-Ban tried updating their frames, but the kids didn’t wanna know.

2000sWell, fads may come and go, but true classics never go out of style, and come the mid-2000s, vintage fashion was sweeping the high street and the catwalk. As a growing number of celebs and music artists were seen stepping out in vintage Ray-Bans, the brand noticed their vintage Wayfarers and Clubmasters were going for a song on eBay. Quick to capitalise, Ray-Ban relaunched their original patented Wayfarer design in 2007, this time expanding the colour palette. Selfridges reported sales were up 231% over 2006, and the brand’s success ushered in a late-noughties vintage eyewear revival. Still a firm A-list and public favourite and as the brand’s history shows – quality and classic style always wins.

Happy Hopping As I write this, it’s July and it still hasn’t stopped raining. Every day, it rains. This, we understand, is not the ideal background to a summer holiday with the kids, whether it’s a staycation at home, days out with the family or a week in a tent. All you can do, during the summer holidays, is hope for the best, and try to make it fun! We’ve got a few ideas for you on how to beat the rainy day blues with inexpensive silly games the kids can play.

Paper Airplane Relays • Step 1: Make an airplane from a piece of previously drawn-on paper. • Step 2: Lift the kids up onto your shoulders, stand them on a bed or perch them on a counter • Step 3: A long, elaborate countdown with extended, fantastical drumrolls. The plane that flies the farthest without breaking a lamp wins.

Binocular Scavenger Hunt Make a list of all the outdoor things you can see from various windows in the house with a pair of binoculars. Vary the items from the teeny-tiny (say, a broken but beautiful bit of green glass) to the exceptionally large (an interesting looking tree), as well as from the very far to the very near. The first child who checks off every item on the list as ‘spotted’ gets a prize.

Smooth as a baby’s… Luxury organic linen retailer Fou Furnishings announces the launch of their new Night Owl Baby Cot Travel Pack. Made from cosy, comforting soft organic cotton bedding, this gorgeous Baby Cot Travel Pack comes in its own easy to carry canvas bag, ready to just pick up and go, making it the perfect travel cot bedding set for busy parents. The canvas bag and duvet are embroidered and appliquéd with the watchful night bird, the owl. Little ones will love the cute owl design which should help them settle down to a peaceful night’s sleep when away from home. The Baby Cot Travel Pack comprises travel cot fitted and flat sheets, appliquéd duvet cover

Each person in the family draws the name of another out of a hat. Everybody dresses up in the clothes and accessories of the person they picked, then saunters down the catwalk, while mum or dad takes pictures. Added fun: Include the family pets...unless Grandma is involved. Grandma does not swap clothes with the dog. Grandma does not wear a lead.

Make a Sock Monkey Everybody loves sock monkeys—even the parent who supervises making them. Why? A sock monkey doesn’t really look like a monkey. So, should you lack sewing skills and end up with a sock monster, nobody gets frustrated, flings themselves on the ground and turns into a child monster.

Count the Raindrops Lie in bed with your kids, look up at the ceiling and try to track the plips and plops of a summer deluge in correct numerical order. This, of course, is impossible. Everyone will lose count after five drops. Yet, surprisingly, everyone will stay in bed—warm, snuggled together—as if this were the point of the whole game.

and an extra large organic cotton cellular baby blanket, all conveniently packed in the matching embroidered canvas bag. There’s even room for a cot duvet too! Fou Furnishings’ Baby Cot Travel Pack is made from carefully sourced 100% organic cotton which meets the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), the gold standard for organic textiles.

Smooth as a baby’s… Only the finest quality organic cottons for you little one… the Little Fou award-winning nursery bedding collection is made in super-soft high quality 330 thread count, so that it is gorgeously smooth and soft against baby’s delicate skin. The company is committed to fair trade, responsible and ethical sourcing of the materials used to make its products. Founder Stephanie McIntosh says: “Conventional cotton producers consume more than 25% of the world’s pesticides and the resulting products can trigger allergies and eczema as well as irritating delicate skin, especially in babies and children. Our organic fabrics are traceable, fair trade and reduce chemical sprays and toxins for farmers”. The long staple fibres used in the cotton makes the bedding strong and durable (good thing, considering how much baby bedding gets washed), yet it will keep its good looks and last for longer.

Product details The travel cot bedding set fits classic travel cot mattress sizes. The Baby Cot Travel Pack with contents listed above costs £105. Items are available to buy individually, starting at £10 for the owl bag and £14 for the fitted sheet Available exclusively from www.foufurnishings.com

Please can I have a party?! younger children with decorations and some balloons, all of which they can do themselves. Get older children to help you with decorations, banners and themes too.

…BY KEM Event Management Many parents admit that they find organising parties for their children stress-inducing. The pressure is on to make each party better than the last one, and children often compete with their friends to outdo each other, piling on more pressure. If you’re working full time too, the added time-pressure makes it even harder. Birthday parties don’t have to stress you out though; a well-organised, themed party can be a really good fun, and a great opportunity for the kids to embark on a journey of their imagination.

What to do? Why not make it a day to remember with a theme that can be chosen by your child? Popular themes for younger children are fairies, pirates and princesses, and as they get older they tend to switch to more ‘grown-up’ ideas like celebrity-inspired and pampering parties. Teens love to hold sweet sixteen parties and discos. Organising the décor for the party doesn’t have to be complicated, keep it simple for the

The food doesn’t have to be expensive, kids love simple finger foods. Go for basic foods that can just be put straight into the oven and don’t need any extra preparation. Foods that always go down well are pizza, sausage rolls and cup cakes. You don’t need to go over the top with party games or hiring entertainers. Boys and girls love to get outside and make a mess, so if it’s a summer party, get the water balloons out! Collect old make-up for girls and have amakeup party. If the weather is good you could also have a sports day – Olympic-themed for 2012. If you have decided to give out party bags, visit a local toy shop where you’ll find cheap and cheerful party bag fillers. The excitement of a party bag is often more in the anticipation, and they’ll be happy with their gifts whatever they are.

Where to hold the perfect party The venue for the party obviously depends on your budget, the number of guests and what sort of party you’re planning. If your home or garden is big enough then the problem’s solved, but if not, you could opt for a local village hall - a low cost great option, particularly if you are bringing your own food and drink.

Happy Hopping

try a whole range of the world’s most famous sports for free – and some unusual ones as well! If you’re not that sporty there’s something for you too, with games, crafts and lots of other activities.

However, if all this seems too stressful or you just don’t have the time you can always enlist the help of a party planner. Party planners don’t have to be expensive. Budget parties can be organised from just under £600 including venue, DJ and disco. Parties can be themed or colour themed. The cost of a budget party can be decreased more if you have the space to hold the party on your own property. The advantages of a twisted pile carpet are: • They are durable and easy to maintain. • Perfect for high traffic areas anywhere in the home • Don’t show up footprints • Come in a wide variety of colours, in solid, heather and berber shades

Finding your perfect carpet When you’re looking for a new carpet for your home, don’t be confused by the different types of pile that you can buy. It’s really very simple to choose the correct carpet for your individual needs.

Twists A tufted twist pile carpet is made with yarn which has been tightly twisted together. The loops are then cut to form a cut pile textured appearance. Tufted twist pile carpets are currently the UK’s most popular style of carpet.

Velvets Carpets with a velvet or velour pile are smooth, elegant and stylish. They are often associated with luxury and sophisticated elegance. Velvet or velour carpets are a bit more high-maintenance and need to be vacuumed regularly than other types of carpet. They can be prone to showing footmarks and vacuum

cleaner wheel marks too. Velvets are sometimes prone to shading caused by light reflecting off the pile.

Loops Loop pile carpet is often referred to as Naturals or Berbers. Loop pile carpets can either be level or textured, depending on the length of the loops. Sometimes, loops can be combined with cut pile to create a pattern. Loop pile carpets tend to be the most contemporary and stylish, and they look great in either a modern or traditional interior. Loops are: • Durable and practical for all purpose usage. • Do not show foot marks and require less vacuuming. • Loops may be snagged by the claws of pets. Bedroom to Boudoir If you haven’t heard about Fifty Shades of Grey, you must have been living in a cave for the past few months. We’ll leave the literary criticism to others for now, but everyone is jumping on the bandwagon, including hotels that are offering packages like a ’50 Shades of Seattle’ package or the ‘Charlie Tango’ deal with added ‘Inner Goddess’ extras that lets them recreate some of the novel’s key moments. There’s a bedding and lingerie range in the pipeline and we’ve even seen a ‘Keep Calm and think of Christian Grey’ pillow!

The book has set pulses racing across the globe, and UK women have admitted to using the book to inspire new tricks in the bedroom— including introducing blindfolds and handcuffs and creating their own mini ‘playrooms’. Almost 80 per cent of ladies surveyed admitted to finding the idea of succumbing to a dominant male like Christian Grey a turn on.

could be all you need to change up the look of a room, without over-flowering and making it look old-fashioned.

Balance is the key to achieving this look. Too much chintz or floral in one place and you’ll make the whole room look reminiscent of Hyacinth Bouquet, which for anyone who wasn’t around when ‘Keeping up Appearances’ was on TV, is not a good look. Offset pretty florals with cool shades and simple designs. Keep the colour palette simple, mix one or two shades with white to avoid it looking too sickly sweet. In the bedroom, push the boat out and treat yourself to the floral painted chest from Sweetpea & Willow. And for a nod to the trend add quirky and vintage accessories like the paisley rose cake stand or the ‘teacup mug’ to an otherwise plain kitchen and see what a summery difference it makes.

NO SEX PLEASE, WE’RE…FROM IPSWICH Can decorating turn bedrooms into boudoirs and stimulate the UK’s most sexually inactive town into more amorous action? Dulux recently offered residents of Ipswich – the town which officially has the least amount of sex in a year – hundreds of litres of free red paint to see if painting their bedroom a sexy colour could spice up their love lives.

Dulux asked willing couples in Ipswich to apply for free red paint – enough to paint a hundred bedrooms – in return for recording any change in their sexual activity over a month long period.

The ‘Home Improvement by Dulux’ experiment came after a survey of 2,000 UK residents that showed the average British adult has sex 42 times a year – but people in Ipswich managing only 18 times in a year.

“Paint is one of the least expensive ways to transform a room, which in turn creates an emotional effect that can help improve

The Garden

“Roses” - by Grant Whitaker

If there was ever a flower to epitomise the English garden, it would have to be the rose; with showy blooms and fragrant flowers, ramblers, climbers, bush and patio varieties, you’d have to have a pretty good excuse not to save a space in your garden for one. Rose gardening is always thought of as being very challenging, but this tag is a little unfair as with a simple regime, anyone can enjoy these plants in the garden.

There are hundreds of varieties to choose from in the following basic forms. Climbing or rambling roses are fantastic for covering pergolas and arches, framing front doors, or scrambling through shrub beds. There is nothing nicer than walking under an arch with a climbing rose in full flower and enjoying its fantastic fragrance. Great varieties to look

out for include ‘The Generous Gardener’ with soft pink fragrant blooms and ‘Snow Goose’, the rambling rose with an excellent quality for repeat flowering throughout the summer with its beautiful white double flowers. Bush or shrub roses are ideal for planting en-mass in a border for a blaze of colour, or spot planting among other shrubs for impact. Don’t forget, you could try the classic formal rose bed look made popular by gardeners for centuries. (You might need a big garden for this!) My favourites include ‘Munstead Wood’, with deep crimson double blooms and ‘Charles Darwin’ with heavily fragranced lemon-yellow flowers. Patio roses are very similar to shrub roses but have a dwarf habit with smaller flowers and usually have no scent. They are ideal for using in tubs and bowls or in smaller gardens and can look great as centre pieces in summer displays. And with such a vast variety to choose from, there’s a colour to suit every taste.

BRING IN THIS ADVERT TO RECEIVE A

Another way to enjoy the rose is to buy them in standard form. These can create a focal point or lend an extra dimension to an otherwise flat border. If you plant them among bush roses you’ll add height, or you could use them as an effective and colourful feature amongst mixed borders. They also look fantastic in tubs and can be a great alternative to using the classic standard bay tree, box ball or pyramid. The main problems associated with all roses are aphids, black spot and downy mildew. These should not put you off from growing roses as there are many sprays now (both chemical and organic) that combat all these problems in one easy application. Watering the plant at the base and keeping the leaves as dry as possible can minimise the problem of many fungal diseases. Don’t forget to feed regularly as a strong plant is better equipped to fight these problems than a hungry specimen. As always, get down to your local garden centre and pick their brains. They’ll have all the information that you need.

If you’re looking for a bit of Indian flavour without the hassle of chopping all those spices, Patak’s might just be the answer. They’ve come up with three new Indian stir fry sauces that are quick, healthy and tasty.

August seasonal foods

Available in three tantalising Indian flavours based on traditional recipes – Bengali coconut (mild), Punjabi 5 Spice (medium), and Goan Hot & Sour (hot) they are perfect added to fresh vegetables, meat or fish and are available in convenient 140g packs for two people. Choose from:

Bengali Coconut – mild heat • A subtle blend of poppy seeds and coconut with warm spices (turmeric, chilli and mustard)

August produce is nature’s bounty. Heat-loving aubergines, courgettes, leeks and peas. Early apples, pears and plums are ready to be picked, and don’t forget to make the most of other summer favourites including strawberries, cherries and raspberries.

With perhaps 1 in 10 people in this area being vegetarian, vegan and many more being meat reducers Lisa Drummy the Director of Fry’s Vegetarian shares her top tips for catering for non-meat eaters at your summer BBQ’s so all of your guests can enjoy the sunshine and some good food.

Veggie BBQ’s Ideas – Catering for Everyone!

“Make sure that you have separate cooking facilities for non-meat eaters. It is easy to do and not that expensive for an additional small BBQ to ensure peace of mind for your guests. “Keep cooking utensils separate – It is not great to turn your veggie burgers with what just prodded the steak. “Read the ingredients of your veggie burgers and sausages. Many non-meat eaters may not eat eggs or could have a dairy allergy – ensure that your veggie options are suitable. “Impress your veggie guests. Have a look for something different – veggie kebabs with polony, vegan friendly hot dogs with ketchup, or spiced burgers – just because they don’t want meat doesn’t mean that they want to be left out! “Make sure that you make enough non meat options. We hear stories constantly of veggie guests who arrived late and the meat eaters devoured all of the non-meat options! Fry’s Vegetarian products are ideal for meat free Mondays, meat reducers, vegetarians, vegans, milk allergies, Kosher or for those who simply want lower fat or no cholesterol foods. Also available from health food stores, online and Holland and Barrett. www.frysvegetarian.co.uk Make your non meaty options fun and sexy! Here are our favourites…

Katie - www.automotiveblog.co.uk

The Giulietta reviews are mainly positive, it’s A growing trend is emerging with the “keyless car”. This special feature was once reserved for the super-rich in their super-expensive cars, but it is now making its way into even the most normal of cars such as the Ford Fiesta and while many people first enjoy the buzz of showing off their keyless start to their friends, some people are already beginning to report problems. The benefit of a keyless car is quite obvious to start off with. For a start, there’s no hassle rustling through your pockets or digging deep into your handbag to try and find those illusive keys. Everyone has stood out in the rain getting wet as they curse where their keys could possibly have gone – Are they in this pocket? Are they in my wallet? Have they slipped down my jacket lining? We’ve all been there. A keyless car instantly removes this. As long as the car detects that the fob is somewhere on your person, the door will open and you will be able to drive off with ease.

However, that really is just about the only benefit to it, other than looking good in front of your mates when you first show them. That’s a lot of technology and effort all to solve what really is a very minor problem. The question is what happens when your battery is dead. Some keyless cars do still have a manual key but many do not and slowly the key is being phased out completely. This means that if you happen to leave your headlights on, you could return to have no access to your car whatsoever, therefore making a jump start or a simple call to the RAC a lot more complicated than it could have been.

On top of this, figures are already showing that this lack of actually having to think about having your keys on you is already leading to more people actually being locked out. With a standard set of keys, you make a conscious effort to pick up your car keys as you leave your home or office. It quickly becomes pure habit because you have to have your key and fob in your hand to actually be able to open your door and then to start the car. When you start getting in the habit of not having to do this, it can quickly become a habit to NOT check for your keys. Therefore rushing out of the office on a Friday evening to get home can often see you completely forgetting to grab your fob in your desk drawer. You then stand at your car looking like a bit of a fool trying to open a door with no key. So, whether you decided to opt for a keyless car is your choice but ask yourself what you really gain from it and if your forgetful brain can really cope with this new lazy option!

Had enough of the weather? Going green has never been more important If like most of us you have had enough of the weather, then it might make you a little uncomfortable to know that much worse is to come. Not only is climate change threatening long term changes to the planet, according to latest research it is also the cause of many of the freak weather patterns that are being experienced worldwide. There are many things that we as individuals can do to stop this getting worse: simple measures such as switching to electric cars or hybrid cars, installing solar panels, improving the insulation of our homes, and turning down the central heating may in themselves make just a small contribution, but taken together the effect is significant. We also should insist that the government introduces greener measures quickly even if they are unpopular; for instance building far more nuclear power stations is much more efficient than building wind farms which do little to reduce the carbon footprint. Let’s look at some of the freak weather that is happening around the world: in 2000 in the UK

there was more rain between September and November than in any previous three month period since 1727 when records began; in 2003 Europe endured a heat wave that killed 70,000 people, it was the hottest summer for five hundred years; even higher temperatures were experience in Russia in 2010 when temperature hit 44 °C killing 50,000 people; Pakistan was devastated by floods in 2010 and 2011; in 2007 the Arabian Sea cyclone Gonu was the strongest ever recorded in the region; and in March 2012 a heat wave in the US was responsible for some of the worst wild fires ever experienced. It is not only severe heat; we are also seeing extreme cold, for instance a big freeze in November 2012 has caused many ancient monuments to crumble in Rome. Global warming models are unable to predict this strange weather, though it seems that as the planet warms up the weather patterns just get wilder and more freakish. Of course there are always changing weather patterns, and typically they can be mapped through a normal (bell shaped) statistical distribution, but over the last 100 years the surface temperature of the planet has risen by around 0.8 °C

Some of the reasons for the weather patterns can be explained by the fact that warmer air holds more moisture, so normal rain can become a deluge creating severe floods. More latent heat is produced when the water vapour forms clouds and this leads to far more severe thunderstorms and hurricanes. However, even allowing for this, the weather patterns are becoming even wilder than expected. Some scientists suspect that one reason for this may be because the jet streams are slowing down, taking up different positions, and amplifying the weather patterns to create more extreme temperatures. Scientists are in agreement about one thing, and that is that worse is yet to come. The events we are seeing today were predicted to occur only in a 100 or so years time should global warming continue unabated. Just imagine the weather we will get should the planet warm up another 5 or so degrees, which will happen if nothing is done about it. Find your green car and join the electric generation

Keyless Cars – Are They Really A Good Idea?

Business

Your Local Business Website Is Live!

Cold calls can lead to HOT new sales for Essex businesses

You have driven boldly onto the information super highway and your local business website is proudly proclaiming your presence to your city, county, country and the world at large. So, what is missing?

Can your readers contact you? It seems a daft question, but oddly it is one that is overlooked quite often. I have seen so many local websites that have a contact page with an email form and that is it. Have your business address and phone number available from EVERY page on your website. Don’t forget people may not land on your “home page” first. In the eyes of the search engines, every page is a home page. It should be where people would expect to find it – in your footer or a link to your contact page. Have a contact page and include all forms of contact – your address, phone, fax, email, carrier pigeon – any form of contact you use, make sure it’s on the page. Make it easy for people to contact you. On the same lines of making it easy, publicise any social media sites you are present on too Make sure that your contact details are accessible to search spiders – in text not images. Check that the information is consistent on all of your web pages and any online directories and local business listings you’ve submitted. Include a map and directions to your business. This can be linking to your Google Places page. Using an email form on your website is fine, it helps to stop those spam bots harvesting your address and spamming your email with the latest must have service. If you want to display your actual business email address (and it’s a good idea to display it), use an image rather than a link. As a side note, if you are a UK limited company you should have your registered business address and registration number displayed somewhere on your website too. People searching online for information are impatient, they want information now and will click away to another site that provides what they want. Help your website to do its job and put all your contact details where searchers expect to find them.

Cold calling has had some bad press ecently - in the case of less than professional firms making persistent calls to private households to try and sell goods or services like double-glazing or PPI claims. On the other hand, professionally done, cold calling can really help businesses to sell more to other businesses and to build their brand. In this feature, resident ‘Business Brains’ Sarah Brockwell of sarahBee marketing explains how businesses can use cold calling to reach potential clients – without being regarded as a nuisance or a ‘pest’ . Sarah explains “Firstly, I maintain that cold calling should really be limited to the business world. I am not a believer of cold calling into private households, which can become an invasion of privacy. Cold calling is best kept exclusively for business to business So let’s be clear, this feature is about businesses that may use cold calling to sell to other businesses, in other words, B2B, during business hours. There are over 60,000 businesses in Essex and the majority of them are B2B (according to the Chelmsford Business Library). In addition, virtually every day, somebody starts up a new business and, without the luxury of huge advertising budgets, businesses have to get new clients or they will quickly fail. The answer for new and existing businesses could be a professionally managed cold calling campaign. Done right, businesses will sell more by quickly reaching a wider audience.

Lee Doran - Director Leed Limited 44 PAGE | AUGUST 2012 ISSUE 16 | www.Inspiredessex.co.uk

10 tips for effective cold calling Here are my personal top 10 tips for cold calling: 1. Firstly decide who you want to call. Try and tackle one industry and one geographic location at a time e.g. Accountants in North Essex. 2. Decide what the aim of your call is e.g. to gather contact names, set up a meeting or make a sale. Be very clear about this. 3. Have you any current promotions that might make your call more readily received? 4. Don’t expect all companies to give out contact details of their staff over the phone. Some companies have ‘no names policies’. 5. Write yourself a simple script which contains all the main points that you want to get across. 6. Begin every call by giving your name and company name, slowly and clearly. 7. If you manage to be connected to the right person then always thank them for their time at the end of the call. 8. Ask them if they would like to be kept informed of future promotions. 9. Always send a follow up email immediately and refer to the conversation. 10. NEVER be pushy or rude on the phone. Cold calling is like Marmite. Some people love it and others hate it. Personally I have recently been inundated with requests from clients for me to cold call other businesses on their behalf. Using a third-party to do cold calling for you is a great work-around if you don’t have the time or the inclination.

Why apps and games translation is no longer just another nice-tohave strategy! – Levent Yildizgoren

Taking your app international is no longer just another nice-to-have strategy but something that must be done. Because there is clear shift in consumer apps usage to international markets, including emerging economies. 8 out of the top 10 largest iPhone and Android markets are not English-speaking. China has become the second large apps market in the world. Consumers in these countries will want to buy apps in their native languages. Therefore developing apps only in English prevents your product reaching global stage. My company, TTC Language Services Limited, works with the apps and games companies, enabling them to reach international customers by translating their products. Sustainability is a dynamic subject and intrinsically linked with the financial bottom line of any business. Current challenges and business risks transcend beyond climate change and involve issues closer to business operations, such as resource sourcing and scarcity. We are looking to recognize those organisations that have embedded sustainability into their DNA, where all aspects of the agenda are addressed and assessed against each other. Organisations can enter 6 categories this year based on size and status, each of which will

be evaluated against 8 sustainability indicators which should be integral to a well rounded sustainability strategy. These include energy, water, waste, resources, carbon, transport, supply chain and social. Participation is free and each entry will be given feedback on current strengths and future areas of opportunity to enhance their future sustainability performance. Dermot O’Gorman, Chief Executive Officer, WWF Australia commented, “Receiving an International Green Award™ is a prestigious accolade for any environmentalist or environmentally focused organisation, acknowledging key achievements and dedication in the area of sustainable innovation.” According to one of this year’s distinguished judges former Costa Rican President José-Maria Figueres “The challenges we face with climate change are not challenges at all, but incredible opportunities. In fact, I believe it to be the greatest wealth creating opportunity of our generation as we move to a post-carbon economy.” To enter before the deadline of the 23rd of August and for more details, visit www.greenawards.com

Turn Your SHINE On – by Rebecca Kane When I said “Yes” to that little knowing voice inside of me and let go of the ‘should’s’ and ‘what ifs’, my life changed. The more I loved myself and began to trust myself the more I got in return. For over half of my life I had been a yo-yo dieter, but oblivious to the fact. My wardrobe should have been a give-away; my clothes ranged from a UK size 8 to 14! However I managed not to ‘see’ this. I had tried all sorts of diets, and diets that I believed were natural; I had eaten for my Ayurvedic constitution, I had food combined and un-combined, I had cut out carbs, I had eaten seasonally, I had filled up on the latest ‘superfood’, and had a cupboard full of the latest wonder nutrients. Yet something still seemed missing, so I just waited for the next book or trend to catch my eye, ready for my next experiment. Raw foods changed this for me and for the first time I began to understood my relationship with food. The more I ate ‘clean’ food; foods that are not processed, free of additives and full of nutrients and vitality, the ‘cleaner’ and clearer I became.

Instead of listening to what the latest ‘guru’ advised and hoping that they would provide me with the answer, the clearer my own voice was becoming and I found myself listening to what my body actually wanted. I started eating what I knew to be right for me and not what I thought I should be eating. The results were amazing! Of course there was weight loss, clear skin and oodles of energy but more than that I felt a deeper connection to myself, and a profound sense of clarity as I moved forward. This opened the way for new experiences and provided me with the confidence to take on bigger challenges.

My passion is to help people reconnect to their true nature, find their voice and support them take their lives to the next level too and I see food as having a key role in this. The food we eat literally creates us and our experience of the world. With each meal we have we have the opportunity to create our lives and I think this is incredible and very empowering. www.shineonraw.com Rebecca’s new book – Turn your shine on – is out now.

Cassie’s Law – by Imogen Carr In February last year, 87 year old Colin Horsfall missed the entrance of a petrol station. After driving into a tree, the police asked Horfsall to read a car registration from the legal minimum. He could not. The police advised him not to drive while his details were sent to the DVLA. Horfsall ignored the police. Three days later, he was driving into the centre of his hometown, Colchester, when his car veered off onto the pavement. 16 year old Cassie McCord was on her way to college at the time. Horsfall accelerated onto the pavement and pinned Cassie against the front of a shop. She died in hospital the day after. Had the police been able to take away Colin Horfsall’s licence, young Cassie McCord would still be here today. But due to a loophole in driving laws, the police were not able to. As said by Sergeant Kevin May, of Essex Police’s serious collision investigation unit, “we can seize the car

if there’s someone driving without insurance. Why can’t we do so for someone who is unfit to drive?” The law needs to change, and we all have the ability to change it. Shortly after Cassie’s death, an e-petition named “Cassie’s Law” was created, in order to give police the right to

suspend a driver’s licence if they are deemed unfit to drive. The petition can be found here at: http://epetitions.direct.gov.uk/petitions/21244 Please sign the petition. It will only take a few moments of your time, and could help to prevent another innocent live to be lost due to careless driving.

Dogs on the go

however, for your dog’s safety, your safety, the safety of your passengers and of other drivers, you should never allow your pet to ride unrestrained anywhere in your vehicle.

It’s a sobering thought that in the USA, 30,000 accidents a year in the USA are caused by dogs in the front seat and every 18 minutes an accident occurs due to a loose pet in a vehicle (there aren’t any statistics for the UK)

Like this one too.

If you’re involved in a collision or have to stop suddenly, an unrestrained dog could crush the driver or anyone in his path, because if you were to have an accident driving at just 30mph, the force could increase his body weight increases by over 30 times.

There’s no excuse as there are some really good products on the market today to keep your pets safely and comfortably restrained. Visit www. care4dogsonthego.co.uk for a comprehensive selection of products and information to aid the safe passage of you and your dogs in a vehicle. We love and care for our family and our pets are also much loved members of our family. So let’s keep them all safe and Clunk, Click every trip!

A 50lb Border Collie would be thrown forward with a force equivalent to almost nine 12 stone men. An unrestrained dog can also be a big distraction while you’re driving, and even a normally well behaved dog can be spooked by something, panic and jump onto the driver’s lap or into the foot well. The Medium Purple Polka Dot Collar by Pets at Home is a chic and fashionable collar for your dog to be seen in this season! The collar fits neck sizes 35.5 - 51cm, is fully adjustable and is sure to turn heads out on walks. A collar should fit comfortably, but make sure you can fit two fingers between the collar and neck. Check carefully under the collar on a regular basis for redness or hairloss caused by ill-fitting collars. www.petsathome.com

We’re a nation of dog lovers and love to take our pets with us to work, shopping, on days out and on holiday. Our dogs travel with us almost on a daily basis, but while we wouldn’t dream of travelling taking our children out in the car without them being safely strapped in, many of us allow our dogs to travel totally unrestrained. There are no laws at present that govern where your pet sits in your car or if he’s restrained;

Local Mid Essex Hospital Services Support

If you would like to support the hospital

Many staff members and visitors stopped to listen while eating their sandwiches or grabbing a quick cup of coffee, all making the most of a welcome break from the busy hospital life. Volunteer chaplain Linda Marsh said: “We could hear the musicians warming up and decided to come along to sit and eat our lunch, and enjoy the entertainment. We are so pleased we did and hope this will be a regular feature”.

We are looking for talented musicians who would like to join the Broomfield Arts Project “playing for pleasure” and share their music with us for an hour or so. If you would like to get involved, please contact Yvonne Carter on ext 4559.

Cash boost from CHP benefits babies

Gifted amateur musicians performed a recital in the main atrium of Broomfield Hospital ast week to delight patients, visitors and staff over the lunch time break as part of the Broomfield Arts Project – playing for pleasure. The wonderful sounds resonating around the atrium were provided by wind ensemble Cross Harmonies and Peter Cross, musical director selected a mixed programme of light classical pieces and well-known light entertainment. Peter explained: “We are all delighted with the wonderful reception at Broomfield Hospital and hope everyone enjoyed listening as much as we have enjoyed playing here”

Local housing association staff have once again chosen to support the children’s services at Broomfield Hospital, this time from an annual spring clean. Jade Parker, Communications Coordinator at CHP explained: “We had a clear out and found some events equipment we no longer needed, so rather than leave it gathering dust we

decided to sell it and donate the proceeds to the children’s ward. We know that our contribution will be put to really good use and we’re really pleased to help the nursing staff provide some extra comforts to the younger patients here”. The Phoenix children’s ward receives donations of toys and games, which are often suitable for older children, so to ensure their youngest patients also have plenty to keep them amused during their stay, staff will use the donation from CHP to buy a selection of baby mobiles to hang over the cots in the ward. Pictured: Jade Parker and colleagues from CHP hands over their donation to Yvonne Carter, Charities Support Officer. They are joined by Mhuireann Mulvihill, Student Nurse, Amanda Shears, Nursery Nurse and Lisa Jolly, Nursery Nurse as well as patients Rebecca, 6 and Luke, 11.

Cake sale helps fund baby sensory equipment

Waiting area makeover

A recent fundraising cake sale at Broomfield hospital proved very popular with staff and patients, and raised a fantastic £675 for the special care baby unit.

The creative talents of local artist, Holly English from Lola Murals, were recently put to good use transforming the renal unit waiting area at Broomfield Hospital with an incredible mural of the sun setting over rolling fields, complete with hot air balloons sailing across the horizon!

Staff on the unit organised the event to help fund additional sensory equipment for their tiny patients. The new equipment will provide extra stimulation which helps regulate stress and can be brilliant relaxation tools for babies with all sorts of complex needs and developmental delays. A huge thank you to everyone who helped organise the stall, and to ‘Violet Cakes’ who sponsored the event with some beautiful cakes.

proves popular with patients

Staff on the unit wanted to ensure their patients received their treatment in comfortable and relaxed surroundings, so commissioned the beautiful piece of artwork using their charitable funds. The new mural, which took two weeks to complete, is already going down well with patients on the unit with lots of positive feedback being received. Lola Murals is an Essex based mural company, creating beautiful hand-painted murals for homes and businesses throughout the UK.
