PUBLISHER’S NOTE

We wish you an irresistibly likeable wedding. The Korean wave pushed K-pop, K-drama, and K-food in the forefront of popular Pinoy culture that Inspirations for Weddings and Debuts Magazine couldn’t resist the lure of doing its own version of a K-wedding for its 14th issue. Vivaciousness, huge global appeal, and the irresistible likeability of anything Korean had us all in Inspirations thrilled like teeners in a K-pop dance concert. Our cover shoot at the gorgeous Blue Moon Los Ilustrados with swoon-worthy gowns of two of the Philippines’ up-and-coming creative fashion designers, Mark Bride’s Manila and Omar Perez Couture, was simply fabulous and fun. Clint Carl Flower Shop enhanced the glamorous K-telenovela ambiance while Elaine Celestino expertly did the Korean-inspired makeover. Goldenhills Jewelry once again scores big in providing the added glitz (flip to “One True Pairing,” page 64). At the Tagaytay Highlands Bridal & Themes shoot, “A Summer to Remember” (page 76), we were reminded once again why getting married here scores high on a lot of soonto-weds’ wish list. The view is spectacular, the banquet service great, and it even has its own chapel. The Arleen Blossom Flowers and Balloons wove its magic to a dream wedding set up while D Makeup Artist By: Miss Rose showed us how a true artist enhances that wedding day glow on our model bride. In this issue we are also thrilled to feature internationally trained makeup artist Diana Kwong in our beauty editorial “Color Splash” (page 85) held in the tres chic City of Dreams Manila. A. Bernardo’s Jewelry provided just the right amount of glitz for an effect that is simply stunning. As usual, we showcase bridesmaids’ fashion once again, this time with the creative team of Fresh Minds Digital Photography capturing the elegance and beauty of Omar Perez Couture’s creations. The very talented Dhana de Belen provided the makeup services while the genius of Pampanga-based florist Villa Rosa by Aida J. Lazatin made everyone sit up and notice. Finally, our main themes editorial “Shades of Blue” starting on page 100, put Hizon’s Catering, Josiah’s Catering, Richgold Weddings in the limelight together with the works of art and masterful creation of Angelyn’s Cakes was simply fab. Flip through the pages of our 14th issue and enjoy it as much as we did preparing it for you.

EDITOR’S NOTE

Picture Perfect...ish This issue, we wanted to present something a bit different from the weddings we often see and attend. While the charm of the classics and romantic feel will never be out of style, we wanted to introduce playing with color and tone for Inspirations for Weddings and Debuts Magazine’s second issue of the year. We imagined either an enchanted garden brimming with spring blossoms or a cool breeze from a serene beachfront wedding while conceptualizing our stories. What we didn’t realize, as we put together decks and mood boards, was that producing our summer 2020 forecast issue was right smack in the middle of the Philippines’ notorious rainy season. Work and classes were being called off the day before our outdoor shoots and on the actual days of our shoot, there would be sporadic rain showers. Our photoshoot teams had to work swiftly and take cover each time it would pour, then pop out again to resume shooting once the skies cleared. So I had an idea––why not work with what we’ve got? During our out-of-town cover shoot, which was inspired by the K-drama craze, instead of hiding from the rain showers, we purposely waited for them to come. We let our cover bride and groom share a single umbrella––for that K-drama kilig––and shoot while trying to stay dry under the groom’s tuxedo jacket. These days weddings and debuts can get wrapped up in getting that perfect shot or capturing (which, sadly, has turned into staging) the perfect moment. Even before we tie the knot, this fixation with the flawless is already heightened because we often try to get the perfect Instagrammable or post-worthy photo even when we’re just drinking our coffee. Yet––these most special milestones we celebrate will inevitably run into a hitch––a bridesmaid might fall sick, someone might forget the wedding bands, a child from the entourage might have a meltdown just before walking down the aisle, or a button comes off your dream gown. It’s a foreshadowing of married and adult life. There are many wonderful days but there will also be gray skies. Yet we keep on, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health. Whether the sun shines bright or the heavy rain pours. As long as you take cover together as husband and wife or for the debutantes, in the safety of your family’s shelter. The next chapter of your lives won’t always be entirely camera-ready, but what does it matter? The beauty lies in the perseverance.

Enjoy the issue!

Colored Gowns Local bridal gown designers have been noticing a growing trend among Filipina brides: opting for gorgeous neutrals over the traditional white wedding gown. These dresses on the runway of Barcelona Bridal Fashion Week do make a strong case. Play with gorgeous neutrals, metallics, embroidery, and applique to achieve a show-stopping ethereal look. Tip: Let your entourage wear white if you want to stand out in your choice!

Feathers Adding this detail to your gown is definitely not for every bride, but we envision this to be easily embraced by the trend-loving, fashionforward woman. Whether it’s an accent on one arm like in Julia Kontogruni’s gown or on both as seen in Marco & Maria, this extra detail can truly be worn on the aisle and not just the runway. Our favorite interpretation is the short Mira Zwillinger dress that is perfect for a reception dress.

The New Dreamy Mira Zwillinger’s creations redefine the look of a dreamy bride. Gowns are structured to hug the body in the right places but the details of overlay, lace, and beadwork are used in a new way to create grace and elegance. Hints of skin as well as fully see-through gowns will work well on a beach bride who wants to exude sexiness with class. Skip the beadwork or use sparingly for this look and play with appliques and various fabrics instead. W W W. T H E M E S N M O T I F S . C O M

Julia Kontogruni It’s all about the shoulders and the decolleté for Julia Kontogruni’s latest show. These necklines are very flattering for women who want to look taller or leaner. The cut may seem like it’s only for ladies with a modest chest, but curvy figures who want to flaunt what they’ve got can also pull this off gracefully. Try a ballgown if you’re going for the princess bride look or the serpentina for a more ladylike silhouette.

SPOT LIGHT ON: Glorious gowns and Omar Perez Couture by Marielle Ong

Based in Taysan, Batangas, Omar Perez Couture is a design house that caters to clients living here and abroad in countries like Italy, Spain, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, and Canada. The business started in October 2014, and a new office has just opened at another Batangas location. Omar Perez gives us insights on Big Day dressing.

Before I even begin to design a gown, I ask clients how they see themselves on their big day, I listen to them before I offer my suggestions.

Most Wanted Constantly in style for brides and debutantes alike are off-shoulder and deep V-neck numbers. A flattering neckline goes a long way in shaping the figure, right along a gown’s silhouette. The see-through illusion neckline is still as hot as ever among the ladies, owing to the way the thin fabric makes the meticulous details (like beads or lace) on the bodice the star of the show. Coveted celebrity gown styles include Marian Rivera and Kaye Abad. Finally, the most popular gown shade for bridal gowns is still blush. Comfort Driven But more than just a smashing cut or silhouette alone, Omar’s clients are wise in requesting for gowns that are also comfortable. They want to be able to move freely, be it while walking down the aisle or dancing at the reception. Be mindful of the fit of the gown when standing or sitting. If boning is present, does it jab you awkwardly? Bring that to the designer’s attention immediately. For the sleeves, check during the fittings that you can move your arms properly. Choose Your Fighter The mark of a good designer is the way he or she carefully handles each project. “Before I even begin to design a gown, I ask clients how they see themselves on their big day,” says Omar. “I listen to them before I offer my suggestions.” In the same vein, an openness and connection with your designer is a must to get the collaborative effort going. Omar advises seeking out a designer who has a genuine concern for his or her craft, so that quality output and client satisfaction are major priorities. Couture on a Budget For budget-conscious brides and debutantes, Omar recommends focusing on a cut and style of the gown that will flatter their figures. Additional details, such as beading and lace, tend to cause the prices to go up. Only request for those if you have the budget. 

SPOT LIGHT ON: J’s Diamond on the enduring significance of wedding bands by Marielle Ong Jewelry by J’s Diamond, Photo from Inspirations Magazine photo collection

As a luxury item, jewelry is often bought or given during special occasions or to commemorate milestones. With one of the biggest life events being a marriage, selecting wedding bling for keeps is a must. We discuss the permanence of wedding rings to a union with Kenneth Mau, president of J’s Diamond. Elegance and Experience The story of J’s Diamond began back in the late ‘90s in Hong Kong as a designer’s workroom. The company expanded to the Philippines in 2012 and has since opened several locations in prominent malls. To produce fine pieces, J’s Diamond employs a mix of traditional casting and cutting-edge technology. Thus, able to do both traditional designs and more innovative ones. A Sound Investment Pricey as they might be, the pieces you don from your wedding day onwards are long-term investments. Says Kenneth, “They are the few tangible things that will be with you and your partner after the wedding celebration.” So apart from the photos and videos of the big day, your engagement and wedding rings will instantly trigger those sweet memories anytime you look at them. Moreover, it’s always good to have a subtle reminder of your Forever Love, especially during those times when you are physically apart. The Golden Touch There may be a lot of experimentation going on with metals and jewelry design, but the not-so-surprising fact is that a classic is forever.

28

J’s Diamond specializes in 18K gold engagement and wedding rings. Naturally, it’s the high-quality craftsmanship and authentic, Gemological Institute of America-certified diamonds that speak volumes.

Choose a ring design that will bring joy and love to your hearts every time you look at it.

A Great Selection With so many designs to choose from, how should a couple go about it? Perhaps take a cue from Marie Kondo. “Choose a ring design that will bring joy and love to your hearts every time you look at it,” advises Kenneth. The rings will summarize your love story, so it makes sense that it should spark joy. In fact, it’s that aha moment that the J’s Diamond team values so much from its customers. “It brings us so much happiness whenever we see their smiles and excitement as they pick up the rings they ordered,” says Kenneth. Finding The One The perfect proposal partner (a.k.a. The Engagement Ring) can be a source of great anxiety for potential grooms. But Kenneth offers some practical advice. “First, set a working budget beforehand,” he instructs. “Second, choose a diamond that is brilliant and will really stand out.” Then all that’s left is to bear your partner’s personality in mind, and The One will simply call out to you. 

VEILED INT ERESTS Adding mystery and style to the must-have bridal accessory Like many elements in wedding ceremonies and celebrations, the bride’s veil holds a lot of symbolism that goes back centuries. Some say the veil preserves the bride’s modesty, while others insist that covering up the bride’s visage keeps her away from evil spirits. To the cultures that practiced arranged marriages, the veil gives the groom a big reveal for when he meets his bride for the first time.

by Marielle Ong

All the same, this traditional accessory is a common part of Filipino weddings. But that doesn’t mean we can’t shake things up with an extra dose of style. Ladies, let’s take back the veil! Birdcage Veil This short and sweet veil, often with net-like mesh, makes the rounds at vintage-themed weddings. There’s something so charming about this conservative yet quirky piece that can double as a fascinator. The Mantilla With our deep-rooted Spanish influence, the prominent lace detail of the mantilla brings to mind Maria Clara and her dalagang Filipina values. It adds a solemn but unabashedly romantic touch to the bridal ensemble. Think singer and actress Karylle’s veil when she married fellow singer Yael Yuzon. Satin-Trimmed Veil A clean-looking classic, the satin-trimmed veil spells glamour that wouldn’t be amiss on Hollywood’s stars from the ‘50s. Just imagine the chicness factor of Audrey Hepburn or Elizabeth Taylor. Petal Veil The petal veil was made for the girly-girl who wants flowers everywhere, and the veil is no exception. Aside from adding texture to the overall ensemble, the petals look completely ethereal when floating in the wind for the formal photo ops. Clockwise from left: The mantilla, petal veil, and the fingertip veil.

Fingertip Veil No fuss, but beautiful just the same, the fingertip veil is the mid-length solution that doesn’t run the risk of being stepped on. The name is such because it ends at the bride’s fingertips. It’s also recommended for petite brides. Horsehair Edge Veil The addition of a horsehair trim to the edges of the veil lends a modern yet uncomplicated aesthetic. The firmness of the horsehair trim emphasizes the veil’s natural curves and pleats. Scalloped Veil Dainty scalloped edges are a little bit old-school, a little bit sweet, and a whole lot of pretty. The curvy edges don’t scream for attention, the embodiment of quiet confidence. Coleen Garcia and Maxene Magalona’s veils for their respective beach weddings carried this detail. 

CORAL, CAN’ T GET ENOUGH! Pantone’s 2019 pick spells this season’s ultimate bridal beauty by Marielle Ong

We’re livin’ la vida coral, and it’s a marvelous way to waltz down the aisle! Living Coral is Pantone’s Color of the Year, and it’s a match made in heaven for the modern bride. She may be sweet, but she knows how to party. Like the big day’s leading lady, this standout shade is equal parts feminine, dynamic, vibrant, and versatile. Most of all, coral as a splash of color translates gorgeously across all skin tones. Get the scoop on Living Coral. Lit and Loving It Coral brings a warm flush to the skin. Complement that with a highlighter that can lend an extra glow. A champagne or gold highlighter can help skin look more sun-kissed, while a pale pink or rose gold one can appear a bit more luminous. Target the tops of the cheeks, inner corners of the eyes, and the cupid’s bow to brighten things up. Sweet Cheeks and Lush Lips A rule of thumb for harmonious cheeks and lips is to select a blush and lip color that match. This is harder to pull off with bolder colors, like red or fuchsia. But that’s not the case for coral. Peachy-pink blushes are a dime a dozen, and the trick is to make sure that both your lippie and blusher lean towards the same side of the warm-or-cool spectrum. Get Those Gloss Goals Luscious lips are back with a vengeance, so give the flat matte lipsticks a little rest. Swipe on some coral lip gloss or top a coral lipstick with clear gloss for an instant plumping effect on the pout. You may now kiss the bride’s juicy lips! See That Sparkle While coral is already popularly associated with youthful looks, go the extra trendy mile with a touch of shimmer. Peachy or coral sheer and shimmery eye shadows have been a staple in K-beauty for years as they can light up the eyes while looking effortless. Smoke Gets in Your Eyes Inversely, another testament to coral’s adaptability is how it can go from light and luminous to softly smoked out without looking stern. Since the shade goes well with neutrals, it’s easy to contour the eyes with the standard browns and beiges first, then follow up with a gradient of coral’s various intensities. 

SPOT LIGHT ON: Copping styling trends from Events Central by Anna Winstel by Marielle Ong

Celebrations south of Manila are looking a little more spectacular, thanks to Events Central by Anna Winstel. Since 2014, the event styling and floral design company based in Cavite has been providing premium services for weddings, debuts, and other social events. We talk to Anna about the aesthetics that make any party look lit. Cool With Colors While there are still a lot of conservative couples and debutants who go for traditional shades of white, blush, and gold, the trend is shifting towards color play. According to Anna, “Some of our clients are being more experimental with their color choices. Pops of bright, vibrant, or deep hues are being injected to veer away from the usual pastels.” So don’t be afraid to pick out something bold. You’re in good company. Savvy Shapes Additionally, themes with modern and geometric elements are still on the rise. The clean lines, often combined with metallic colors, add some masculine details to balance out the feminine florals and soft colors. Look Up Another trend that celebrators can’t get enough of is playing with the space above them. “More clients are including ceiling treatment in their design decks as it is now becoming a staple in event styling,” notes Anna. Hanging strands of flowers is a regular feature of recent debuts and weddings, and so are enormous lighting fixtures. Luxe-Leaning With its out-of-this-world visuals, Crazy Rich Asians has become the ultimate peg for event styling. “That movie paved the way for the mirrored aisle trend and the use of botanicals and greens,” says Anna. But it isn’t a flat-out copy of what’s on-screen. Their clients usually request for something classic, romantic, and elegant. Then the team gives it a twist by adding elements that match their personalities. That personal touch truly makes an event the celebrator’s own. Practical Planning Aside from telling celebrators to savor the moment (for it passes by way too soon), Anna is all about identifying the main priorities in an event and allocating the budget accordingly. “You don’t want to be looking at your wedding photos and thinking to yourself, ‘I should’ve allotted more budget to this’,” she stresses. When working with a budget, it is also important to collaborate with your stylist to make the aesthetics affordable. “Know your options. You can ask your stylist for cost-effective alternatives to achieve your design inspiration.”  36

Bright City

If an out-of-town wedding is not a possibility, why not maximize a celebration in the city by looking for a venue that has a bit of the outdoors? Old structures and modern architecture are great places to hold picturesque celebrations. (Think: Old Manila!) Bring in color to brighten up your backdrop and reflect the joy of D-day. We suggest these playful shades of pink and blue.

We hear you—colors might not be your thing. But shades of neutrals definitely are. An easy way to put a festive spin on your preferred tones is by sprinkling it with some sparkle. A little silver here and a little rose gold there also lend a bit of glamour to your wedding’s look and feel. Use sparingly to keep the motif on the classy end of the spectrum.

SPOT LIGHT ON: Henry Evalle’s earnest approach to wedding photography by Marielle Ong

Serene moments. Soft smiles. Tears of joy. But most of all, love all around. These are the impressions one can get from the photos of Henry Evalle, R.N., chief photographer of Henry Evalle Photography and Team Ossome Lab. We find out the method behind the shots. From Moment to Moment The role of a wedding photographer is to capture the most intimate and emotional scenes of the big day. Henry would be remiss if he didn’t have shots of the moment the bride enters the church or the groom’s initial reaction. Other moments that must be immortalized include the exchanging of vows and the petals being showered on the newlyweds. You’ll know that a photographer is astute when those heartfelt instances are a staple in his or her albums. On Embracing Innovation As the craft is ever-evolving, creativity is crucial. But it’s not just about copying trends. “I make sure that when I attempt a creative shot, it still has our own style,” Henry points out. Couple’s Choice It is integral for Henry that his subjects be the ones to select the theme. He says, “The theme’s beauty comes out if we’re working towards the same goal. Once they have chosen their theme, that’s when I give suggestions to bring out the concept.” When the photographer selects the theme, there’s a tendency for the couple not to get all that comfortable, or they just won’t be as pleased with the result.

Down to the Specifics Aside from deciding on a theme, Henry gets down to the nitty-gritty when meeting with his clients. “I find out what the couple like and dislike, like their preferred angle for me to capture,” says Henry. It helps to show pegs and sample images to your photographer to give the team an idea of how you want to be photographed. Fullproof Practices Next to photography skills, it’s the photographer’s demeanor that helps get the perfect photos. It puts the subjects at ease to be cheerful, friendly, and approachable. Henry opts to dress distinctly, so that he can easily be identified as the official event photographer. A Matter of Trust Finally, after establishing a rapport with your photographer, Henry advises to simply trust. Since all the specifics have already been discussed beforehand, it’s time to let the artist work his magic. 

invites

Nowadays there is no shortage of options when it comes to going paperless. Most commonly, you can count on social media announcements to get the message across quickly. There are also customizable digital invites that can be sent via link or e-mail. So is there still a place for the traditional physical copy of an invitation? Absolutely. A printed invite is a thoughtful touch that underscores the solemn aspect of the celebration. At the heart and soul of the festivities is a revered milestone that has brought family and friends together. It deserves a level of attention to detail. Family and loved ones who are from older generations will greatly appreciate a physical invite. It can also set the tone of your wedding, that it’s not just another party or get-together. If producing less waste is a concern, then consider these equally classy alternatives. Choose Wisely Instead of printed Save the Dates and Invitations, make the clever compromise by choosing to have a physical copy of only the formal invitations. Get as creative as you want with the Save the Dates that you can design digitally. Back and Forth Reduce the number of pages you have to produce by making use of the back of the paper. You can keep it short and sweet by reserving the most pertinent information for print. Other details like registry and venue directions can go into an especially made event page online. It’ll be easier to link the info directly to an online shop or to Waze. Who says you haven’t embraced the digital approach? Size Matters No one ever said that invitations needed to be chunky! Switch the large square cards for slimmer cuts that can double as bookmarks. All the info is there, but with less space to take up at the end of the day. It’ll cost less too, since a single full sheet of cardstock can already accommodate several invites.

IN F INE PRINT “To print or not to print invitations?” That is the question by Marielle Ong

Room for Recycled Recycled paper is often inexpensive and easy to find. Certain types also have quirky qualities that might suit your theme beautifully. For example, the regular brown recycled paper can be dressed up with twine for a rustic style. Another type has dried flowers pressed into the pulp for added color and all-round prettiness. Reading and Seeding An increasingly popular option for eco-conscious celebrators is to opt seed paper, a cardstock made of recycled paper that has small seeds included in the pulp. The seeds add some grit and texture to the paper, which give it some character. After the big event, guests can easily cut up the invites into some potting soil and wait for their new plant to grow. 

SPOT LIGHT ON: Discovering Ming’s Garden, a not-so-secret gem in Tagaytay by Marielle Ong

As far as captivating venues go, Ming’s Garden has an equally interesting story to back up its serene aesthetics. Event Manager and Consultant Elaine Estrada-Arzadon gives us a closer look at a garden paradise. A Timely Transformation Sometimes, beauty is best shared with the world. What started as Lola Ming’s Garden, the space that housed former First Lady Amelita “Ming” Ramos’ plant collection, got a makeover and expansion that evolved into Ming’s Garden. The three-hectare property is now home to a full-service events venue. There’s even a fully operational restaurant in the premises that’s open to the public, called Mozu at Ming’s. “We wanted to be part of something bigger,” says Elaine. “We wanted to create timeless memories with all of our guests.” Open yet Intimate The area may be sizeable, but events at Ming’s Garden are held in intimate open spaces. This has a lot to do with the location’s somewhat secluded vibe. You’ll have fun with your family and friends while maintaining a sense of privacy. The company can cater to small, indoor pocket events for 20-40 guests. For a moderately sized event like a wedding, its al fresco garden area can accommodate 100150 guests. And for a grand celebration of up to 400 guests, Ming’s Garden offers its air-conditioned greenhouse-type space.

We wanted to create timeless memories with all of our guests.

Fine Features Tagaytay is no stranger to destination weddings, so event venues aren’t exactly a rarity in the region. But the central location of Ming’s Garden beside the main highway makes it easily accessible, even to the unfamiliar. Both San Antonio de Padua Parish and Ina ng Laging Saklolo Parish are only 10 minutes away, while St. Benedict Parish in Nuvali and Our Lady of Lourdes Church are just 30 minutes away. Another main feature is the lush, well-kept garden that will provide numerous opportunities for photo ops and detail shots. A Festive Feast In addition to creating regular meals for customers, Mozu at Ming’s serves as the venue’s in-house caterer. Its specialty is sumptuous Filipino fare featuring crowd favorites like Crispy Tinapa Rolls, Chicken Soup with Lemongrass and Kamias, Gising-gising, and Bagnet Kare-Kare. With the garden ambiance in full effect, the accompanying celebratory feast sounds like the start of a local countryside vacation, an idyllic way to begin married life, for sure.  52

T HE NEW COC KTAILS STAPLE The dish on the grazing table trend by Marielle Ong

With over 30 years under its belt, Hizon’s Catering is well-established in the business of celebratory meals. The company prides itself in providing a consistent quality of food and catering service to different scales of events. The team is also no stranger to adapting trends, so we consulted the people behind it on the latest dining option that’s taking the world by storm. Not Your Ordinary This isn’t your regular old buffet table. A grazing table is usually loaded with high-end meats, cold cuts, and other morsels to snack on prior to the main reception meal. A buffet table, on the other hand, is more of a main event spread to take care of full appetites. What’s more, the grazing table tends to have a distinct look, often with a rustic smorgasbord feel. The food on display is plated and styled, positioned closely together with certain food items scattered around the table for added effect.

The Essentials What makes a high-quality grazing table? Fresh ingredients, for one. It dignifies the concept of “farm to table” production, which makes the station more engaging to clients who decide to treat themselves with appetizers. The most popular food and basic components of this sophisticated snack table are still cured meats, cold cuts, and assorted cheeses. These are the elements that elevate and set standards for the table. For the aesthetic, the fundamental look you’re going for when setting up a grazing table is to give a full view of the appetizers from end to end.

Tasty Tips To get a good-looking grazing table, opt for components that will keep well from the prep to the party proper. For fruits, you’ll want to get the juicy ones that won’t oxidize easily. Oranges, strawberries, and grapes are a staple. An artisanal look plays a vital role in making the food look enticing. Finally, the table must be presented on time to get the food at its best quality.  I N S P I R AT I O N S F O R W E D D I N G S A N D D E B U T S VO LU M E 7 I S S U E 1 4

Popular Pick What makes the grazing table so well-loved these days is the way it can adapt to the celebrators’ preferences. They can select from a combination of fruits, vegetables, cured meats, dips, and such. The table can also be styled to a theme. So any event, big or small, could do with a well-stocked grazing table.

A NOD TO NAT URE

Celebrate milestones the cleaner, greener, and more sustainable way by Marielle Ong 56

AISLE FILE

Once-in-a-lifetime events deserve special care and attention, but so do our planet and the people who live in it. This is the time to be more aware of our actions and their effects on the world around us, and this applies to both big days and everyday life. If you’d like to adopt some conscious consumption practices for your milestone event, here are some small steps that can make a big difference. All in One A one-stop-shop celebration venue is a dream in more ways than one. First, you and your guests will only have to look for parking spaces once. Second, the wedding party can go from the ceremony to the reception without having to sit through traffic a second time. Third, event venues usually have complete and customizable packages, so you won’t have to scout for suppliers far and wide. Fourth, plenty of venues come with gardens or have palace-like exteriors, so there’ll be plenty of opportunities for photo ops. That’s practical and a great reduction in carbon footprint for you and all your guests. Flip to “It’s All About Location” on page 49 for venues that can hold both your ceremony and reception. Spacing Out What’s totally free and will look good in photos? Natural light! It’s the photographer’s best friend that reduces electricity consumption. Get the most out of the free lighting by hosting a morning wedding at an outdoor venue, or at least opt for a venue with well-placed skylights. Sensible Styling Seek out an event stylist who doesn’t just have a creative eye, but also one with a knack for repurposing and reinventing the decor from his or her other events. Those candelabras and fairy lights will look just as good at your bash as it did the previous event. It’s only a matter of getting crafty to make the details look fresh every time. Room for Growth Cut flowers are gorgeous, but you can level up the sustainability factor of your event by picking up potted plants instead. Pots can easily be dressed up with pretty stones, ribbons, and fabric. Recycled jars and pails can look just as fetching. These can also double as your giveaway to guests. Perfectly Imperfect In deciding an aesthetic and theme for your celebration, try something that won’t require matchy-matchy perfection. A rustic theme usually leaves a lot of room for mismatched elements, like differently sized chairs, mixed glassware, and assortments of vases. Thus, you can source some of the decor from thrift shops, saving some money in the process and repurposing pre-loved items. They can even double as party favors or decor for your shared home. Love Local Show the local food industry some love by supporting locally produced ingredients for your menu. You and your potential caterer should discuss

trends

the sourcing of ingredients and how you can include more local finds to the mix. This may mean going the Filipino, Asian, or fusion food route. A good chef will appreciate the challenge. The same goes for drinks. Support local and artisanal distilleries, but make sure that the products from smaller distilleries are certified safe to drink. Veg Out The reality is that meat has quite a lot of carbon emissions compared to vegetables. And while you can’t force your guests to go vegetarian, you can up the veggie dishes served at the reception while keeping the meat to a minimum. Let Them Eat Cake Say no to styro by requesting an all-edible cake or an assortment of smaller cakes that can also be served to guests for dessert. For decor, replace plastic toppers with fresh fruits. The Written Word The extreme way of cutting down on paper usage is to embrace being digitally savvy and eschew the printed invitations altogether. Facebook Events can be quite effective in disseminating reminders to those near and dear to you, and digital e-vites can be laid out beautifully at minimal cost. But if you would prefer physical copies, try reducing the number of pages to print or springing for recycled paper. Read more about it on page 48. Digging for Treasure When it comes to accessories, the goal is to reduce mining. The rest of your big day bling can double as your “something borrowed” from close friends and relatives. If there are loose stones and heirlooms around, you can have them set or reset to your specifications. Purchasing vintage jewelry is another option, and you’ll be getting a side of history to boot. Dress Accordingly When outfitting your entourage, welcome classic cuts and designs that they can wear to other special occasions. It’ll be flattering to see them enjoy your sartorial options over and over. The Vintage Edit Not quite comfortable with the concept of a wedding outfit you can only wear once? How about revamping that “something old”? You can alter or embellish Mom’s wedding dress and maybe spice it up while you’re at it. Then there’s the option to rent a dress or buy a cleaned pre-loved one, as there are many brides who sell their wedding gowns online and sometimes donate the sales to a good cause. Another way is to resell your new gown yourself and donate profits to a charitable institution of your choice. 

ADVICE

WEDDING PL ANNING ADVICE

Get the lowdown from the newly married who just survived what you’re stressing over

FROM REAL COUPLES Because we all know wedding planning is anything but a walk in the park—whether you have a coordinator or not—we put together a list of advice from couples who just recently tied the knot. Here’s their words of wisdom to help you get through your wedding planning with a smile:

01.

Set a budget first, you need to decide how much you can spend on your wedding. Start the guest list before deciding on your venue, get an idea first of how many guests you will host. ––––––Bernard and Belle Ang

02.

Consider borrowing items that will be used once from your friends and family. I borrowed my bridal robe for the bridal preparation from one of my bridesmaids. I also borrowed my sister’s jewelry. ––––––Rachell Masinag-Marquez

03.

04.

DO. NOT. BRING. YOUR. PHONE. Leave it. There is no reason for you to bring it anyway! First, because it’s a distraction; and second, it looks poofy inside your pocket when you take photos. ––––––Aiko and Nikkolai Sy

05.

You don’t have to get all the expensive suppliers. However, there are certain suppliers worth the investment (like the photographer, videographer, wedding gown, and caterer). Talk to multiple suppliers to get the best possible deal. Also, make sure to attend wedding expos since suppliers typically lower their prices or throw in additional extras for your special event. ––––––Jeff and Colleen Gonzaga

06.

There is never a perfect wedding, there will always be some shortcomings, but the very essence of this milestone is to enjoy every bit of it and never worry of what might go wrong. Communicate with your partner on what are his take and point of view. It’s very important that you agree on things together and that he should also be informed of this and that to avoid confusion. ––––––Alexa Aranas-Gorgonia

07.

08.

Be nice to your coordinators and suppliers. After all, you will not have much time to actively work on the details on the wedding day itself. It’s your coordinator and suppliers who will make things happen. ––––––Atty. Walter and Rheya Mactal

W W W. T H E M E S N M O T I F S . C O M

Get an all-in wedding coordination package from day one. Don’t worry about the finances because they will all come back. The husband needs to put in effort, the bride can’t do all the work. ––––––Paolo and Faye Roa Lastly, increase your patience and understanding. This doesn’t come overnight. Wedding planning is stressful. As a couple, we felt the pressure during the third to the fourth month leading up to our wedding day. If not for each other’s patience and understanding, little (or big) fights are inevitable. Pray for each other, more than you pray for the wedding itself. ––––––Aiko and Nikkolai Sy

honeymoon

If the thought of planning your honeymoon on top of your wedding is already stressing you out, we suggest to keep it simple. You don’t have to give in to the pressure of having Instagramworthy photos against old churches in Europe or safaris in Africa with a matching new hashtag for your travels. There are many countries nearby brimming with new worlds to explore, too. Traveling within Asia can be a bit more relaxing as you’re already roughly familiar with customs, practices, and how things are done. Even if you’ve already visited any of these countries before, there’s still something special about seeing it again with your spouse-to-be as a treat to yourselves after hosting a big bash. Remember that what’s important during your honeymoon is who you’re enjoying it with, the where is just secondary. Vietnam Hit up the Old Quarter in Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, for a little bit of the city bustle and a whole lot of the quaint sights, thanks to the old-timey houses and shop facades. The area is perfect for unlimited romantic strolls along Hoan Kiem Lake, where restaurants, water puppet shows, and boutique hotels abound. On the weekends, there’s a night market for street food and pasalubong needs. Cap off the trip by traveling to Halong Bay for a cruise at the UNESCO World Heritage site. Being among the 500-million-year-old limestone formations is a positively serene experience. Wi-Fi and mobile reception is a rarity in those parts, but you probably won’t even notice while you’re kayaking, cave-exploring, and doing sunrise yoga. Singapore What makes the island city-state so fascinating is the way you can get a feel of the cultural melting pot simply by walking or taking the MRT from one district to the next. Arab Street is where you’ll find the Sultan Mosque, halal food, and artsy boutiques. Visit Chinatown for the temples, Heritage Center, and the lively Food Street that’s filled with patrons from day to night. Little India is home to Mustafa Centre, a huge, 24-hour shopping center where you can get anything from snacks to appliances to beauty products from all over the world. Have your own Crazy Rich Asians moment by going on a tour of the filming locations featured in the movie. The out-of-this-world wedding scene was shot in CHIJMES Hall, a former chapel that’s been converted to an events venue. Follow up with an afternoon at Gardens by the Bay (the reception site) to check out the best of botany and witness the Supertree Grove light up in the evening. Finally, Newton Food Centre was where the cast snacked on satay. And by the way, it’s open until late! Japan In addition to being a UNESCO World Heritage site, the ancient city of Kyoto is where you can have the traditional Japanese hospitality experience by staying in a Ryokan (inn). We’re talking tatami floors, futon beds, and carefully prepared kaiseki (tasting) meals. You can sign up for a tea ceremony to witness the revered treatment of matcha. When you’re ready to experience the sights, head to the shrines and temples to get zen. For a scene straight out of a painting, take a ride on the Sagano Romantic Train, especially during spring or autumn for the most vibrant colors. The route goes along a river and through tunnels, transporting riders to the beauty and, yes, romance of the countryside. 

ADVICE

There’s nothing wrong with putting in a lot of effort and money into your wedding day, but hopefully the same effort will be invested for the rest of your days as husband and wife.

My wife and I celebrated eight years of marital bliss last July at our honeymoon destination. Eight years isn’t really a long time but with a third child on the way, the sight of my beautiful bride walking down the aisle feels like forever ago. I say marital bliss not in the cliché or the absolute sense of the phrase, but according to its simple original definition: Happiness in marriage. Truth be told, happiness is fleeting especially on days when there are misunderstandings and disagreements. We’ve had our fair share of arguments, from random squabbles to what looks like the Captain America (and Bucky) versus Iron Man fight scene from the movie, Captain America: Civil War. With the civil war battles behind us, I can say that I’m still experiencing marital bliss because what overshadows our fighting with one another is intentionally fighting for our marriage. At the end of the day we’re part of the same team. Engaged couples often approach us with googly eyes for one another as they look forward to their wedding day with much excitement and eagerness. Not even the stress of wedding planning and insufficient funds can wipe the smiles off their faces. We try to bring them back down to earth gently with Biblical and practical advice. One of the things we always tell soon-to-be-married couples is that your marriage is much more important than your wedding day. Which means that there is a lot of work that needs to be put into your marriage and not just the wedding day. There’s nothing wrong with putting in a lot of effort and money into your wedding day, but hopefully the same effort will be invested for the rest of your days as husband and wife. Marriage, most especially ours, is anything but easy. I like what Timothy Keller, American pastor and theologian, wrote in his book The Meaning of Marriage, “Marriage brings out the worst in you. It doesn’t create your weaknesses (though you may blame your spouse for your blow-ups)—it reveals them.” It takes a lot of effort to adjust and compromise when two imperfect people come together. When two individuals with their own set of weaknesses and shortcomings enter into marriage, it is inevitable that there be arguments and misunderstandings. So even after eight years, my wife and I continue to work on our relationship by including God in our marriage, building friendships and relationships with other married couples, and continuing to dream together for our future.

Include God in the marriage. To include God in your marriage is more than the one time you are pronounced as husband and wife, “in the sight God and men.” It is inviting God into your relationship as husband and wife and allowing Him to be included in all matters of your relationship. We make major decisions together by coming to God first through prayer. My ability to love my wife every day is drawn from God’s unconditional love for me and vice versa. We understand that we can never truly love each other the way we’re supposed to be loved because only God’s love can fulfill that. Build community with other married couples. The day you get married can feel like it’s the two of you against the world. It might be true… for a second. The world is just too big to take on yourselves if you want to reach happily ever after. You need people around you, a community, to help take on whatever the world throws at you. I’m grateful to be able to build friendships with couples who have been married much longer than us as well as couples who have been married about as long as we have. These are people we can share our shortcomings with, our hopes and dreams with, as well as people we can simply be ourselves around. These are relationships that aren’t just for parties and gettogethers, but you know they will be there when the going gets tough and challenges come. Continue to dream together. A couple of years before we got married, my then girlfriend and I had a dream box where we would put in random things that we wanted to use for the future or objects representing dreams that we had. We had a couple of kitchen tools back then to represent our future home where we would be cooking. Nowadays, we simply write it down and exchange notes so that we can pray together and believe together. A shared dream unites us and leads us in the same direction with much faith and hope. Shortly after my wife and I got married we found ourselves sharing the same sentiments about marriage, “Why didn’t we get married sooner?” Marriage can become marital bliss till death do you part, as long as you put in the work.  Bojo Bonifacio is the kids church pastor of Victory Greenhills. He has been married for eight years and has two children, Vera and Mateo, plus another son on the way. Aside from teaching children and pre-teens, he and his wife also teach marriage preparation classes in church. During his free time, he enjoys watching cooking shows with his family, traveling, and reviewing milk tea on his Instagram.

Wilmer and Charmaine on Firm Terrain Having both grown up in the city, seasoned outdoor explorers Wilmer Sy and Charmaine Nolasco take any opportunity they can get to be one with nature. For their pre-nup session, the pair arranged a destination shoot in Canada where they had to “rough it” on rocky terrain. The season was shifting from winter to spring, a transition the sweethearts considered a metaphor for braving any climate as long as they’re together. Uly and Jenny’s Next Chapter Nostalgia sparked the concept behind Uly Solon S. Sison and Jenny Lyn O. Perdigones’s engagement photos. During their college years, the two met at the University of the Philippines Los Baños, and they wanted to channel that same dreamy charm of vintage beauty and being surrounded by greenery. While a reboot wasn’t hard to set up, the couple ultimately decided on another setting to show how their simple college love story has brought them to a different place. Truly Timeless Aiko and Nikkolai Future Perfect Trends may come and go, but a classic is forever. Aiko Ewee Sy and Nikkolai Samantha Tuason’s vision for their wedding was to employ a theme that would give their future kids and grandchildren something to admire. Simply Complementary Ian and Nyl’s Undying Spark It’s been a long ride for Christian Figueroa and Angenyl Dumaop. They met in grade school, began dating in high school, and moved on to a long-distance relationship when the bride moved to Australia. Though the couple may boast of more than a decade of togetherness, it’s the way the two complement each other that tells the world that what they have is for keeps. To Ian, Nyl inspires him to be a better person, while Nyl adores Ian’s crazy but sweet attempts to constantly woo her. It’s a spark that won’t see any fading anytime soon. Co-Captains Navigating With Lyle and Louise Lyle Alain Sapalaran and Louise Clare Gepilano’s wedding day was as vibrant as their journey together as a couple. The duo incorporated plenty of nautical elements to their wedding as a nod to Lyle’s career as a seafarer. PROPOSALS THAT POP

A Piece of History Ash and Thea’s Period Proposal There may be a lot of naysayers for long-distance relationships, but Elvin Ashley Agustin and Thea Marie Pias’ nine-year LDR status is living testament that true love finds ways. With the groom-to-be based in Hawaii and his love living in the Philippines, Ash has made it a point to try and return to Manila every year for Thea’s birthday. While it wasn’t always smooth sailing, the effort he put in certainly paid off. Ash was ready to pop the question.

rest after the long drive. Ash managed to excuse himself on the guise of having a look around and snuck off to the in-house photo studio that he was already in contact with to finalize the plan. When he got back to the house, Ash informed a giddy Thea that they were scheduled to have a photoshoot. The bride-to-be was equally surprised and delighted that they were to don traditional garb for the shoot.

Taking his beloved’s appreciation for travel and history, the groom-to-be decided on a getaway to a historic location. Las Casas Filipinas de Acuzar is a collection of restored Spanish-Filipino houses in Bataan that reflects the architecture of a bygone era. The proposal plan was six months in the making, and Ash admitted that the experience was nerve wracking. The five-hour drive felt like forever!

The pair and the camera crew walked to several different sites to get various backdrops. Ash had a challenging time posing as his costume pants were tight and made concealing the ring box difficult. But Thea was distracted enough by the posing to notice what was coming. Finally, the group reached a stunning part of the property that featured a view of a mansion in the background. The photographer instructed Ash to kneel for a more romantic pose, and that’s when he made his proposal! The newly engaged pair spent the rest of the evening wining and dining to celebrate.

After checking in to their destination at noon and taking a little walk, the pair decided to retire back to their accommodations to

An Engaging Errand Lyle and Julia’s Surprise Stopover Lyle Apalisok and Julia Villostas’ love story was blessed since the beginning. The pair met at church and became friends, but it took years before they became a couple. According to Lyle, “I can really testify that love at His sight is better than love at first sight.” That gradual blooming of their love gave Lyle the confidence and assurance that their relationship was ready for the next level, so the proposal planning officially began.

noticed the hanging photographs and all the sunflowers, her favorite blooms. That was when Lyle appeared to ask for her hand in marriage. Their family and friends were overjoyed, and the engagement was sealed with a prayer to bless the blissfully engaged couple. The celebration continued with a celebratory dinner at their proposal venue.

When Julia’s sister and brother-in-law arrived from abroad, Julia joined them for a mani-pedi to be followed in the evening by a dinner with their family. Afterwards, they headed to the house of her “brother-in-law’s friend” to pick up a package. Unbeknownst to Julia, this was actually a rented house that Lyle had decorated especially for the occasion. The group arrived, and Julia was convinced to come to the house for a look around. She entered the backyard and found it filled with candles and rose petals. When she entered the house, she

Dinner is Served Charlie and Mae’s Anniversary Special

How do you surprise someone you can never surprise? Charlie Grifaldo pondered this long and hard when he sought to propose to JC Mae Navarro Antonio. In the end, the simpler way proved to be the most effective way. Prior to the day, the groom-to-be already met with Mae’s parents to discuss his proposal plans. Both parents were thrilled at the news and immediately gave their stamp of approval. Charlie then proceeded to reach out to Mae’s best friend to assist with organizing the big event. On the afternoon of August 3, 2018, Charlie invited his sweetheart to celebrate their fifth anniversary with a romantic dinner at Antonios, Tagaytay. The restaurant took on the feel of a sanctuary as the pair pretty much had the place to themselves. A server led them to a table by the window where the cool breeze wafted in and they were treated to a serene garden view. However, the nervous

Charlie had to take a quick restroom break for a couple of deep breaths in order to compose himself. “As I went back to the table,” Charlie said, “I felt like I was walking towards my future.” Just as the couple started with their salad course, a server who was in on the grand plan approached the two to offer to take their photos. It was then that Charlie knelt in front of Mae, which felt to him like a movie scene in slow motion. All he could see was her face and all he could hear was her voice. He spent many sleepless nights working on his big spiel, but at the moment, all he could muster was, “I love you. Will you marry me?” Mae responded with a resounding “Yes!” and the newly engaged pair proceeded to have their most delightful dinner yet. MO
