Welcome to our spring edition of InSolihull and the start of 2019.

4-5

I hope you are all post January blues and have started the year with verve, excitement and commitment to a new project! However you decide to step into the new year, we have some great style tips on our fashion pages to hint towards the emerging sunshine – I just adore the soft beige and sunshine yellow palette for this season and will be strutting to meetings with the knitted yellow bag from Topshop. This March we launch the inaugural Solihull Business Expo at the Crowne Plaza hotel with fabulous free to attend training sessions from Google, LinkedIn and the Ask the Experts team. The Solihull BID website will have all the info if you wish to attend or exhibit – one to watch for all business owners in the region. Our new BID Business club is also launching in spring to add to our line-up of new focused events. Solihull will celebrate Easter with Fashion, Food and wait for it…LEGO® bricks! As a family favourite, activity visitors will be able to come along and 'make and take' a LEGO® bricks Easter chick or bunny or little tots can play in the Duplo brick pit. The style event will guide you to discover your fashion secret with workshops, live demos and tutorials to get us all looking on point for the seasonal transitions.

INFOCUS

"As a council our purpose is to improve lives by providing great services. The council I serve is clear they want to enable our residents to be healthier, happier, safer and prosperous."

My business life…

Nick Page

Nick Page is the Chief Executive of Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council and his Twitter biography (@nickpage66) describes him as dad of teens, husband of world champion rower; cycling, mountains, rugby, punk, cooking, wire hair fox terriers. CEO of Solihull Council…. living the dream!

I

n the first of a new series of interviews with business leaders in the borough, InSolihull magazine finds out what makes him tick.

What does your day-to-day role involve? “My working day starts with a cup of coffee over my overnight emails. I’ve recently started cycling to work when I can, which I really enjoy; it gives me headspace and sets me up for the day. “No day is typical in my role but I always try to mix it up so that I meet with colleagues and partners, talk to my councillors and the local MPs, and make time for catch ups and visits. At least once a fortnight I make sure I go out with our brilliant frontline teams. Chatting to our residents and my colleagues gives me a great insight into what we are getting right and what we need to work on.

“Being responsible for the delivery of over 430 laws for 215,000 people affecting schools, housing, global and local businesses, transport, health, social care and safety means that I’m running a 24 hour, 365 days a year business.” What drives you every day? “What drives me is simple; unfairness and inequality. It gets right under my skin. I want to do everything in my power and influence to make sure all our residents have access to the same opportunities in their lives. One of the key priorities outlined in our 2018-2020 Plan is to make sure everyone benefits from economic growth and the new employment

opportunities this growth will deliver. I am passionate about being the best leader I can be. I’m also passionate about breaking down the barriers around mental health and wellbeing…. it’s something that’s personal to me and is important to so many other people.” What does success mean to you? “As a council our purpose is to improve lives by providing great services. The council I serve is clear they want to enable our residents to be healthier, happier, safer and prosperous. Success for me is when I meet residents, businesses, learners, visitors and our partners, who are happy and proud to be part of the Solihull story. That for me is the real measure of success. I recently had the privilege to hand out degrees and awards at the Solihull College and University Centre. In a nutshell that is what Solihull is all about; hard work, unfailing determination and the support to succeed.” What’s the biggest lesson you’ve learned from your time at Solihull Council? “The biggest lesson for me is to ensure that I don’t lose sight of the detail, whilst still focussing on delivering the vision for Solihull. This vision and our aspirations for the future are critical. But so is a missed service or a young person not in school. Maintaining attention to detail whilst building a compelling public service narrative for government support and investment is so important. It is how this organisation will continue to provide the services our residents expect and deserve, as well as securing a bright and prosperous future for the borough.

“This job has also really taught me about the importance of striking a good work life balance. I always urge my colleagues to try and avoid sending emails after 7pm, at weekends or when on holiday and will only send an email myself if it is life threatening.” Who inspires you?

“My inspiration comes from all sorts of people; my wife, my children, my friends, my colleagues and our residents and businesses. I’ve always drawn my inspiration from real people living real lives and getting on with things. I once sat next to a world famous leader flying back from a trip to South Africa. We talked about family, home, sport and gardening… he was a real person first and then a leader.” What would you tell your 18-year-old self? “Young people today face so many challenges and pressures. Coming from a background working with young people and having children of my own this is something I have seen first-hand. That’s why I am so passionate about the services we deliver and the work we do with our partners to improve the lives of young people in Solihull and support them into adulthood.

“I would say to my 18-year-old self; pace yourself, enjoy the moment and you will learn so much from your experiences. I love my job and I love Solihull.”

NEWS & DEVELOPMENTS FROM ONE OF THE COUNTRY’S LEADING COMMERCIAL REGIONS

WHAT IS EMPLOYABILITY – LET’S WORK TOGETHER? EmployAbility – Let’s Work Together is an employee-led supported internship programme for young people aged 17-25 with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) that began in 2013 as a partnership between National Grid and Round Oak Special Educational Needs School in Warwick.

I

ts purpose is to raise aspirations and improve the likelihood of a young person with learning disabilities achieving paid employment by the provision of supported work placements.

People with learning disabilities have only 6% likelihood of achieving paid employment; one of the lowest employment rates of all people with disabilities. Despite this, many young adults with learning disabilities aspire to work. Employment brings higher self-esteem, confidence, financial security and choices as well as a feeling of contributing and being part of the community. EmployAbility students are fully supported throughout the year by two Job Coaches – Jayne Wyatt and Paula Jeffries – who help find placements, internships and ultimately, paid employment. “The Solihull programme started at National Grid in September 2015 involving six students from Selly Oak Trust School and Q.A.C (Queen Alexandra College),” explains Jayne.

and National Grid and also finding volunteering opportunities suiting the interns' needs. Lessons learnt are discussed each year to make the programme even better. Year 4 has been the most successful yet with four of the six interns obtaining paid employment within National Grid, one gaining paid employment at an external business and one gaining the confidence to pursue his interests at college. “Overall at the Solihull site we have supported 38% of interns into secure employment and this figure rises to circa 60% taking account of all National Grid sites where the programme runs. “We currently have students from Selly Oak Trust School and Woodlands School who started with us in September and will be with us until the end of the academic year.

“During this time, they will complete a BTEC in work skills alongside three work placements within National Grid, each lasting a term. This gives the students opportunities to learn “Since the first year, we have seen success after success for the interns, many new and transferable skills as well as increasing their including obtaining paid jobs confidence and self-esteem.” within both external businesses

Parents report that the EmployAbility programme exceeds their expectations and they are reassured that despite the fact that only 6% of students with learning disabilities are known nationally to go on to paid employment, this programme offers the interns the confidence and ability to increase this possibility. One parent commented on how independent their son had become since being on the programme; something they had never envisaged happening. Another parent added: “When John (name changed for anonymity) started his internship, he was nervous and could find communication challenging, particularly knowing when to speak during a conversation. “The job coaches, who were an invaluable guide to him and the other members of the group, helped him settle, be comfortable in the area he worked and discussed any concerns he had. John has thrived and become a confident young adult who knows that he can work and that he can fit in.”

EmployAbility interns and graduates describe how being a part of the scheme has helped transform their lives. “Choosing to go on the Employability programme was a great decision for me,” says one of the students. “All the placements I went on were great and gave me an excellent insight into working life. Having gained a job at National Grid I can definitely say that working life is very tiring sometimes but I’m glad that I now get paid!” Another graduate describes how their self-confidence improved, which helped them secure a fulltime role with National Grid: “It was nerve-wracking before starting as it was all new. Once it started it became more normal and I settled in quickly and became more confident. EmployAbility changed my life and I now have a full-time job at National Grid, which I really love.”

BNP PARIBAS AND RUGBY LEGEND LAWRENCE UNITE TO TRANSFORM LIVES

B

A leading Solihull business has joined forces with one of the most famous faces in rugby to support disadvantaged teenagers in the region.

Dallaglio RugbyWorks was founded to help young people excluded from mainstream UK schools to achieve sustained education, employment or training by leveraging rugby’s values of discipline, respect and commitment.

NP Paribas Personal Finance, as one of four BNP Paribas businesses, in the West Midlands has entered into a three-year working partnership with Dallaglio RugbyWorks, the charity set up by England rugby legend Lawrence Dallaglio. BNP Paribas will fund much of the charity’s work as it launches its programme across the West Midlands to help make a tangible, positive change for disadvantaged teenagers in the region.

To date the RugbyWorks’ programme has helped hundreds of young people throughout the UK by providing an intensive, three-year, long-term skills development programme based on those values whilst helping build a bespoke pathway to sustained education, employment or training.

Lawrence Dallaglio won 85 caps for England and is an inductee of the World Rugby Hall of Fame. He was part of the England team that won the 2003 Rugby World Cup. Having experienced a troubled time in his youth after the death of his sister, Lawrence credits discovering rugby for helping overcome a turbulent time in his life. He recognised the power that rugby had in transforming his attitude, behaviour and aspirations and channelled that power into the development of RugbyWorks.

To date the RugbyWorks’ programme has helped hundreds of young people throughout the UK. “There is no doubt that there is a real energy transforming the West Midlands into a future economic powerhouse,” he explained. “However, there are some challenges that we need address if everyone in our community is to benefit from this transformation. “For me education, skills, and employability, is key and we do a lot in this area through our graduate, apprenticeship and school liaison programs which, over the years, have supported lots of young people in our region. “I am extremely grateful to BNP Paribas for supporting our work in the West Midlands for the next three years,” he said. “Young people on our RugbyWorks programme are three times more likely to pass Maths & English Level 2 and twice as likely to still be in education, employment or training 12 months after leaving school. “I am looking forward to working in partnership with BNP Paribas in the West Midlands to extend this important work and help young people here achieve their full potential.” One of Europe’s leading providers of consumer finance, Blenheim Court-based BNP Paribas Personal Finance is one of Solihull town centre’s most attractive employers with a commitment to nurture and develop its employees and offer career progression locally or internationally. The company is also a supporter of Solihull BID’s annual Excellence Awards, which aim to recognise outstanding town centre workers and companies. Stephen Hunt, CEO BNP Paribas Personal Finance UK, said: “For us, it’s all about making a positive, local impact. As a prominent organisation in the region – the BNP Paribas Group has four businesses and

employs more than 1,000 people – we saw the transformative role we could play in helping Dallaglio RugbyWorks launch its support and development network in the West Midlands.

“However, I felt that we could be a lot bolder and all come together with the support of BNP Paribas to make a bigger impact on our region.

“Everyone stepped up to that challenge and over the next three years our funding will give Dallaglio RugbyWorks the platform to enter the West Midlands. “This is a great start but I want us to go further than just funding and it is my hope that leveraging all the assets we have we can engage as many individuals, businesses or organisations to help support the Rugby Works team to become really established in our communities and to develop the relationships that they will need to help give young people, who may have not had the advantages we have had, to get back on track and ultimately into the workplace.”

“Over the next three years, we want to lead the charge to get other organisations on board to help Dallaglio RugbyWorks double the amount of young people it can help. Dallaglio RugbyWorks’ unique approach gives teenagers a second chance in life, and we are honoured to be a part of it.” Stephen has lived and worked in the Midlands for over 30 years and can see the positive change that is happening across the whole of the region.

BUSINESS BRIEFS

INBUSINESS

A new hot desking workspace has opened in the centre of Solihull. Based at the 600-year-old Grade II-Listed Malvern House on New Road, The Hub offers flexible workspace options with a room to meet clients and build your business. The Hub offers a comprehensive service for start-ups with HR advice, accounting and bookkeeping, company registration, design and web support and a postal address. Desks are rented by the day and just a short walk from Touchwood. Visit www.solihull-hub.com, email info@solihull-hub.com or call 0121 713 2288 for more information.

Facilities at Solihull station improved A £280,000 revamp of Solihull rail station is being carried out.

Expanding BPG takes new Homer Road offices

Improvements to the station toilets, booking hall, subway, stairs and waiting room at the station are being implemented by Chiltern Railways and Network Rail, who are working with Solihull Council. The scheme has improved access for pedestrians and cyclists to the town centre.

Midlands property investor and developer BPG has grown its team and moved office to offices in Solihull town centre.

The works come just two months after the £1 million Town Centre Approach scheme, which was funded by Solihull Council and the West Midlands Combined Authority, was officially opened.

Taking on five new recruits, the new office at 31 Homer Road reflects the beginning of a new chapter for the property professionals. Founded in the 1980s, BPG has grown into a leading operator in the Midlands property market with a reputation for delivering high quality developments. Newly-appointed finance director Robert Bayliss joins BPG from Roxhill Developments. Robert is being assisted by finance administrator Hannah Costin, who has four years’ experience and is qualified to AAT standard. New office manager Jennie Sinclaire-Busby is PA to the chairman and directors and has previously worked in corporate sectors including engineering, security and the civil service. Two site managers for new development projects have also been appointed.

Funds boost for West Midlands’ auto technology The research and development of connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV) in the West Midlands has been given a £19 million funding boost. Mayor of the West Midlands Andy Street said the additional money for the Midlands Future Mobility project would help ensure the CAV sector played an increasingly important role in building a "resilient and future-proof" regional economy. Around £11 million of the funding, from the government’s Innovate UK, will be used to expand the 50 miles of roads in Coventry, Birmingham and Solihull that are already being used by the Midlands Future Mobility consortium for real world testing of new CAV technology.

Safety first for Solihull-based ESG While shopping and leisure habits may change, the need for visitors and workers to feel safe and secure is a constant. Few businesses understand this better than ESG Security, an industryleading, family-owned security company, based on Warwick Road in Solihull town centre.

E

SG provides security services for a range of commercial properties including retail outlets, office blocks, and industrial locations. The company operates to the latest British Standards and industry codes of practice. ESG was founded in 1988 by former Royal Marine David Hoey, in a small office in Olton. As the Managing Director David is responsible for the overall strategic direction and leadership of the business.

“I created ESG after I served with the Royal Marines for four years, specialising in Arctic warfare,” David tells InSolihull magazine. “I went on a Group 4 security consultancy course, after leaving the Marines and finding myself on 'Civvy Street'. “I had no experience of launching and running a business but I was keen to learn and I attended as many lectures, seminars and workshops as I could.” One of ESG’s (then called Elite Security Guarding) first customers was a bakery shop, Hogan’s Café (now Costa Coffee), in the centre of Mell Square. Then 18 months after launching, ESG was awarded its first major contract with a construction company. “We built on this with the attitude that I was going to go out and get more and more. Along the way we bought two companies – in Chelsea and Worthing – merging them into one to create what is now ESG Security. We’ve grown the business steadily ever since.”

The company has always had a presence in Solihull. They provide the town centre taxi rank marshals, and have now been asked by Solihull BID, to provide its Evening Guardians. The Guardians are there to ensure a safe night out can be enjoyed at the pubs and clubs of Solihull, by working with bar and restaurant door staff, and liaising with West Midlands Police. David reflects on the growth of the company and how it has adapted to meet changing technologies. “When we first set out in the 1980s and early 1990s it was a case of knocking on doors and making sure you had an advert in the Yellow Pages. We’ve always moved quickly to adapt to the various changes in the business world. “We’ve got an excellent business development team who are great with tender writing and working digitally. “Our website is critical for news updates and staff vacancies. Recruitment has changed massively from the days of placing an ad in a Job Centre.

Has the unprecedented growth in digital technology affected the services ESG provides and how the company operates? “Ultimately, we’re a people business. We provide the best personnel. However, we always look for innovative solutions that work in a digital world,” says David.

“We have patrol manager devices with GPS tracking. We can share information through secure digital networks immediately anywhere around the country. It’s invaluable real-time information.” And after moving to new offices on Warwick Road, what does the future hold for ESG? “We had a couple of offices in Acocks Green, but always wanted to move to Solihull town centre, to recognise the support the Council and Solihull based businesses have provided us with. Solihull Council for example has been a constant customer since 1988. Moving to Solihull has increased the credibility of the company, and been a real plus for growth and development.

“We’ve got quick learners in the business. We find out what we need to do to get the right security staff and we develop it from there.

“The amount of new work we’ve won in 2018 has been impressive, and we do attribute this to moving to Solihull. We now employ around 300 security staff throughout the UK, and have offices in Solihull, Worthing “If we get it right we get a massive response and London. Over the next few years we and we can find that for every vacancy we want to continue building on the success of advertise we might get over 50 replies. This ensures we get the right people for our clients.” 2018 and increase our profile across the UK.”

Trapeze

Scottsdale invites visitors to discover their inner cowboy as they step into cowboy boots at the Arizona Cowboy College, a family owned business located in Scottsdale, Arizona.

One of Kenya’s leading safari companies, Heritage Hotels, features two properties on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline, Voyager Beach Resort in Mombasa and Kipungani Explorer on Lamu island, from which guests can explore the reefs of Kinyika and Manda Toto and learn to deep sea fish. Legendary American writer, Ernest Hemingway, first visited Kenya in 1933. He travelled to Malindi in 1934 when there was just one beach hotel in the seaside town and with two weeks in hand before sailing from Mombasa, Hemingway set out in an old boat named ‘Xanadu’ to try his hand at deep sea fishing where he battled with the conditions and soon developed a passion for the sport that never left him. Today, visitors staying with Heritage Hotels can catch a variety of fish on a deep sea fishing trip on Kenya’s coast including Dorado, Kingfish and Giant Trevally which are regularly caught as well as learning trickier techniques to catch Blue Marlin or even Shark! Heritage Hotels also offers a range of water sports from water-skiing on the clear waters to kayaking in the sheltered Kipungani channel.

Ever wanted to be just like the amazing Las Vegas Cirque du Soleil performers? Why not take a lesson in the art of Trapeze in Las Vegas. Each session starts with the basics of hanging by your knees and by the end of the session partakers will attempt to release and catch with one of the professional catchers. Shop INDEPENDENT at Liv's

At Solihull BID, we’re all about shopping local and supporting the brilliant independent businesses in our town centre.

I think what’s unique about our shop is the atmosphere & experience

Whether you need a new pair of shoes, a tailor-made suit, a homemade cake or legal advice, the thriving independent community is booming, and we want to encourage you to show your support too. In this edition, we are featuring Liv’s – an independent, family business based in Mill Lane, Mell Square. Named after its Norwegian founder, Liv’s sell original, distinctive and on-trend homewares and quality furniture. We had a chat with Liv’s about what makes them unique and what it’s really like to be an independent businesses in Solihull.

What does your independent business do? We sell homewares and furniture which you wouldn’t necessarily find on the high street from larger stores selling interiors products. We buy from a range of suppliers and countries – we are always on the hunt to find quirky, cool original pieces that offer our customers something unexpected and different.

What’s unique about your business? I think what’s unique about our shop is the atmosphere and experience. All of the team take great care to ensure attention to detail, from selecting music for our shop playlists, styling our stock, and generally just making the customer experience as welcoming and wonderful as possible. You’ll also find that the products we offer are pretty unique compared to what you might find elsewhere. We also always make sure that our products are offered at a surprisingly reasonable price – it means that stylish homewares are accessible to a range of customers with various budgets.

How long have you been trading in Solihull? We have been trading in Solihull since 2012, after moving from a smaller shop at Hatton Country World.

What’s the best thing about trading in Solihull? We are lucky to have a really strong sense of community in Solihull, and really enjoy seeing many regular and loyal customers. Our customers are so friendly, and they are passionate about supporting us as an independent retailer. We also have some wonderful neighbouring retailers who create a warm and inclusive community. There's a fantastic network of businesses in Solihull like Solihull BID who help in case of an emergency to keep the town safe.

What obstacles do you face as an independent business? The obstacles we face are mainly tied into high rent and rates. Online retailers don't have these overheads and as a result the High Street is put under threat – which is sad. The High Street is really important, as it instils a sense of belonging and union amongst the local people. Although we don't have the buying power of some retail giants, we do have flexibility and full understanding of every nook and cranny of our business.

How important is it to have a close knit team to support your ideas and ambitions as an independent business? To us, it is incredibly important to have a close knit team to support our ideas and ambitions – we rely on our team to bring our vision to life, whether that is via an amazingly styled window or a super friendly delivery and construction service when we are in customers’ homes. Because we are an independent business, we get to personally choose the people that work here – so every one of our team are all very passionate about our brand and do whatever it takes to get the job done. We can be very agile, so we encourage new thinking and ideas and the team can see those ideas in action quickly which is really satisfying. It might sound cliché but we all chip in and help one another – we are one big happy shop family!

What exciting things does your business have lined up for 2019? We have lots of exciting new things to look forward to for the rest of 2019! We plan on continuing to grow our online presence and

Livs, Mill Lane, Solihull, B91 3BA. 0121 709 4636. www.livs.co.uk

bring our customers valuable and inspiring content. We also have some revamp plans up our sleeves for the shop, we love to change things up regularly to keep the shop exciting and captivating for our customers but 2019 will see more significant changes – so watch this space! We will also continue to feather our community nest by offering more amazing workshops and collaborating with other small independent businesses.

What is your advice for people planning a house makeover? Have fun with it and try not to get stressed out. From early on, create mood boards and inspirational collections on Pinterest, make a list of the non-negotiable investment items like a stunning painting, a handsome occasional chair or some beautifully handmade industrial furniture, that way you can ensure that you prioritise your budget on the things that make you smile and enhance those items with cheaper accessories which are easy to switch out and change around. Things that make you happy will tell your story, whether that’s through sentimental treasures or finds from your travels. Keep your sense of humour, look for things that make you smile, and most importantly – follow your heart.

Are there any particular new items or trends that people should be looking out for? Yes absolutely! Throughout 2019, we will see more of a luxe vibe in interiors, sumptuous textures, earthy colours and bold prints will all feature – maximalism at its best! Following our most recent buying trip to Paris in January you’ll be sure to see some pieces online and in store that reflect these trends. 27

Your local, award winning legal experts February for many is the season of love but inappropriate expressions of affection from one colleague to another can be a problematic area for Employers Thursfield's Associate Solicitor Jade Linton explores the law relating to sexual harassment in the workplace and the obligation an Employer has when an employee has been sexually harassed by a colleague. The Equality Act 2010 prevents the following three types of harassment:

Even when an employer is satisfied the harassment was not carried out during the course of employment, it should be aware there could be workplace implications nevertheless. For example, the victim of the alleged harassment may be frightened to work with the alleged perpetrator, or may suffer less favourable treatment at work as a result of having rejected or succumbed to the alleged perpetrators advances. There may also be implications for other employees if the alleged perpetrator poses a risk to anyone else. Where there is a sufficient connection with the workplace, an employer will have a duty of care towards its employees and when faced with such a scenario should consider the following:

• General harassment • Sexual harassment, and • Less favourable treatment

1. Discussing the matter confidentially with the alleged victim.

An employer can be liable for harassment carried out by employees in the course of employment and case law is clear that ‘in the course of employment’ is not just limited to core working hours, for example; an act of harassment at a work-related social event. For harassment which occurs during the course of employment, an employer will have a defence under the Equality Act 2010 if it can show it took all reasonable steps to prevent the alleged perpetrator from doing the alleged act. This will of course be a question of fact and an Employer facing a claim will need to supply evidence to show it had indeed taken such steps.

Jade Linton Associate Solicitor, Employment

2. Conducting an investigation under its disciplinary procedure; this should be considered even if the alleged victim of the harassment has not yet made, or does not wish to make, an official complaint. The rights of the alleged perpetrator should not be overlooked and if disciplinary action is taken in the absence of an investigation, this may amount to a breach of trust and confidence and give rise to a claim for constructive dismissal. Depending on the nature of the harassment, an Employer may have other duties - for example, to involve the police in serious cases. However, this is outside the scope of this article.

At Thursfields we have expert knowledge in both employment law and harassment in the workplace. Please call Jade Linton on 0121 796 4022 or email jlinton@thursfields.co.uk to discuss.
