Aftercompletingmygraduatestudiesin1994andearninga PhDinearlymodernFrenchhistoryatMarquette University,IjoinedtheUniversityofNorthAlabama (UNA)inFlorence,whereIservedasaprofessorandthen chairoftheDepartmentofHistoryandPoliticalScience from2002-2008.Duringmy14yearsatUNA,Iearneda reputationasanaward-winningclassroominstructorand activescholarfocusingonearlymodernFrenchsocialand economichistory.Iregularlypresentedatmajornational andinternationalconferencesofFrenchandEuropean history.Additionally,Iproducednumerousrefereedjournal articlesandreviewsandawell-receivedscholarlybook.
WhileIwasverycontentasafacultymemberandin “cultivatingmyowngarden”byfocusingsolelyonmy career,Iwasaskedtoassumethechairmanshipofthe historydepartment.Reluctantly,Iaccepted.Tomysurprise, Iderivedgreatsatisfactionfromworkingandsupportingthe professionalgoalsofothersandleadingthedevelopmentof innovativeacademicprogramsthatmetstudentandsocietal needs.Asapersonwhostrivestomoveforwardinall respectsofmylife,Iwassoondrawntoadvanced
leadershippositionsthatwouldoffermewiderandgreater responsibility.MychairmanshipinAlabamawasfollowed byadeanshipattheUniversityofTexasBrownsville(now theUniversityofTexasRioGrandeValley)from2008-12, thenstintsasprovostandvicepresidentforacademic affairsatMississippiUniversityforWomen(2012-14)and theUniversityofTexasPermianBasin(2014-21).In2021,I reachedwhatIbelieveisthepinnacleofmycareer trajectorywhenIbecamethefifthchancellorofthe UniversityofSouthCarolinaAiken,mycurrentposition.
Whatchallengesdidyoufacealongtheway?
Takingresponsibilityforothersandbeingheldaccountable fortheworkofothersinitiallywasdifficult.Still,Ilearned toacceptthisresponsibilityandadopttheleadership philosophyofDwightD.Eisenhower,whosaid, “Leadershipconsistsofnothingbuttakingresponsibilityfor everythingthatgoeswrongandgivingyoursubordinates creditforeverythingthatgoeswell.”Thegreatestchallenge duringmycareerjourneywasimposedonmyfamily,who willinglyfollowedmeonmycareerjourneyfromonegreat opportunityandlocationtothenext.
Whatsignificantimpacthaveyoubroughttothe educationindustry?
Iliketobelievethatmyimpactontheeducationindustry hasbeentoensurethattheinstitutionstowhichIhavebeen apartremainedresponsiveandrelevanttothepeopleand communitiestheyserve.Indeed,universitiesmustnever takeforgrantedpublicsupportforortrustinhigher education.Thissupportandtrustmustbecontinuously earned.Likethepursuitofexcellence,itisnotonce achievedandlaterforgotten;itmustbestrivenfor, intentionallyandrelentlessly
Inthisspirit,Ihaveledthecreationofsignatureacademic programsinengineering,business,andnursing,aswellas numerousindustry-alignedgraduateandundergraduate programsinemergingareassuchascybersecurity,data science,gamingandsimulation,networkadministration security,softwaredevelopment,andwebsitedesignand development.Insupportoftheseprograms,Iledthe establishmentofcollegesinhealthsciencesandhuman performance,engineering,nursing,business,nursing,as wellasacademicandresearchcenters/institutesin biomedicalscience,cybersecurityandinformation,natural resourcemanagement,andwaterandenergywhoseapplied researchfocusisonsolvingournation’smostpressing challenges.Ihavealsomadeitaprioritytocommunicateto thepublichowtheuniversityisfulfillingitsmissionand remainingrelevantandresponsivetothecommunityit serves.

Whileweoftencannotcompetewithprivatesectorsalaries, wedoofferouremployeesanoutstandingandsupportive workenvironmentaswepursueournoblemissioninhigher education.Offeringremotework,whereappropriate,offers usanothermeanstoremaincompetitiveinthelabormarket andenablesustofillcriticalworkforceneeds.
WellbeforetheonsetoftheCOVID-19pandemic,USC Aikenleveragedtechnologytoenhanceitsoperational efficiencyaswellastoexpandthereachofitsacademic missionbyofferingdistanceinstructionandprograms electronically.Indeed,duringthepastfiveyears,USC Aikenexperiencedmeteoricincreasesinonlineenrollment. Duringthisperiod,forexample,enrollmentintherecently launchedonlineMBAprogramhasrisenfrom13to421 students.
Inadditiontoenhancingaccesstohighereducation–an integralpartofourmission–technologyalsohasallowed ustomoreeffectivelyengagewithandsupportourstudents viasocialmedia,textmessaging,andotherplatforms. Duringthepastyear,forexample,weadoptedanelectronic advisingscheduling,communicationandstudentsuccess casemanagementsystemthattracksstudentsdegree progressaswellasstudentinteractionswithcampus personnelandoffices.Thishasenabledseamlessandtimely communicationwithstudentsandourstaff,allowingfora teamapproachtosupporttheacademicandnon-academic needsofourstudents.
Whatwillbethenextsignificantchangeintheeducation industry,andhowareyoupreparingforit?
Thenextsignificantchangeintheeducationindustrywill ariseasuniversitiesarecompelledtorespondtothepublic’s demandformorepersonalized,flexible,career-focused, efficientandlessexpensiveeducationaloptionsthatare alignedwiththeircareerneedsandgoals.Justasmovie theatersandcableandsatellitetelevisionproviderssteadily havelosttheirhomeentertainmentmonopoliestoonline streamingandothernon-traditionalsourcesofelectronic entertainment,universitiesdominanceofpostsecondary educationandworkforcetrainingwillbeincreasingly challengedbynon-traditionalproviders,suchasGoogleand otherfor-profitandnon-profitentities.

longerrequiringbachelor’sdegreesasanapplication requirement.Inresponse,non-traditionalproviderssuchas Googleoffertargetedandhighlypersonalizedprofessional certificationsalignedwithindustrystandardswhose learningoutcomescanbeachievedinamuchmoreflexible andabbreviatedformat.
Asthesecredentialsgainmorecredibilitywiththepublic andtheiremployers,universitieswillneedtorespondby moreeffectivelyarticulatingthequalityandrelevanceof theircurrentofferingsbutalsobydevelopingsimilarly typedprogramsandcredentials.Fortunately,the imperativesimposedbythepandemicandworkforceneeds alreadyhaveinducedmanyuniversities,includingUSC Aiken,torespondwithflexible,industry-aligned credentialingprograms.

Further,wewillcontinuetobeacollaborative,impactful andhighlyvisiblecommunitypartner.Illustrativeofour commitmenttoregionalcollaborationanddevelopmentis theDepartmentofEnergy’sAdvancedManufacturing Collaborative(aninnovationhubformanufacturing, fosteringmodernindustrialpractices,advancingnew
technologiesandtrainingthefuturemanufacturing workforcewithafocusonchemicalandmaterials manufacturing)andtheSouthCarolinaNationalGuard’s CyberSecurityCenter,bothofwhichwillbeconstructedon ourcampus.Finally,thisfall,wewillembarkona collaborativeuniversitystrategicplanningprocess. Togetherwithourcommunitystakeholdersandbuilding uponourtremendouslegacy,wewilldeterminethe priorities,goalsandstrategiesthatwillguideouruniversity forthenextfiveyears.
Whatadvicewouldyouliketogivethenextgeneration ofaspiringleadersintheeducationsector?
Nowmorethanever,highereducationneedsleaderswho notonlycanarticulatethevalueandrelevanceofa traditionalpost-secondaryeducationalcurriculumand experiencebutwhoaresensitiveandresponsivetothe needsoftherapidlychangingeconomyanditsworkforce.
Today'seraischaracterizedbyrapidtechnological
