Story

2023 was a year to remember for Initiative AUNZ and perhaps even more so for its Chief Strategy & Product Officer, Chris Colter. Chris has spearheaded a record run of new business wins, dominant work recognition, unheard-of employee NPS, launching a retail media division and even expanding the agency’s footprint into New Zealand. Prior to joining Initiative, “Colts,” as he’s affectionately known, says Initiative was an agency lost. No product. No purpose. No POV. In close partnership with CEO Melissa Fein and National Managing Director Sam Geer, in under five years, Chris helped an agency ranked #27 in local news business leagues get recognised, above 45,000 other media agencies, as the #1 agency globally by CampaignUK. And if you look at the numbers, it’s easy to see why. According to the independent body RECMA, the Initiative has had a monumental run. $131M in successful pitches in the last year ($83M won, $48M retained). DOMINANT agency ranking (2nd year running). #1 Vitality (ranking a business's total health and momentum). #1 AU Pitch win ratio for the last three years. 53% higher than second place and 136% greater than the average of the top 18 agencies in the country. #1 in New Zealand new business in their inaugural year of operation. #1 Most Awarded for work for the past three years, +65% higher than second place.

Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ Ÿ

Ÿ

…not bad for an agency that couldn’t crack the top 20 five years ago. But it’s the work the Colts care about most. In 2023, Initiative dominated local and international awards with work that set new benchmarks in media planning. Highlights include brokering a partnership between LEGO and Nitro Circus, bringing big brand thinking to B2B marketing for

insurance broker CGU, and even brokering a national naming rights sponsorship for Cricket Australia (unheard of from a media agency) spearheaded by the inven on of a new media channel.

Alongside this, Colts has been a force for industry progression. Championing and educating the industry on adopting purpose in their practice - launching Forgo en Upfronts (an open industry forum to spotlight publishers catering to niche and neglected communities), building the Diversity Directory (an opensource database featuring diverse media providers), crafting the strategy behind NITV’s Beyond3% and personally helping NRMA Insurance sign on as the first major adver ser to commit and more. You can also frequently find him on stage pushing for progressive planning, whether that’s conducting a live experiment to test the unconscious bias of over 5,000 media and marketing professionals or advocating for +55 audiences to get the attention they deserve, Colts is never shy to hold a mirror to the industry and chart a way forward. Importantly Colts ensures he walks the walk on all this provocation. Sitting on Initiative’s global product council, he has created purpose embedded product that has been scaled across 95 markets and is often cited as a point-ofdifference powering Initiative’s success. In 2023 he also assumed the role of Co-Chair of the Media Federation of Australia’s Awards and Conference Committee, responsible for setting the industry benchmark in what modern media planning looks like. Both from an output (work) and input (change) point of view. In this role Colts created new awards to celebrate inclusive and effective media planning, democratise pride in media planning and created new industry-wide frameworks to elevate the entire industry, not just his agency. When it comes to CSOs redefining success, you couldn’t have a better example than Chris Colter.

Environmental

Sustainability in Cybersecurity

A

s the world becomes increasingly digitalized, the importance of cybersecurity has soared to unprecedented heights. However, with this surge in digital activity comes a growing concern for its environmental impact. In recent years, the information technology sector has faced scrutiny for its energy consumption, electronic waste, and carbon footprint. This article explores the intersection of environmental sustainability and cybersecurity, highlighting the challenges and opportunities for creating an ecofriendly cyber landscape. Energy Consumption in Cybersecurity One of the primary environmental concerns in cybersecurity is the energy consumption of data centers and computing systems. The constant need for processing power and storage space puts a strain on energy resources. Traditional data centers, in particular, can be energyintensive, requiring vast amounts of electricity for cooling and powering servers. This has led to a surge in carbon emissions, contributing to climate change. To address this issue, the cybersecurity industry is increasingly turning to sustainable practices. The adoption of energy-efficient hardware, improved data center design, and the integration of renewable energy sources are crucial steps in minimizing the environmental impact of cybersecurity operations. Green data centers, for example, utilize advanced cooling systems, efficient server architectures, and renewable energy to significantly reduce their carbon footprint. Electronic Waste Management Another aspect of environmental sustainability in cybersecurity is the management of electronic waste (e-waste). With the rapid pace of

December 2023 | 19 | www.insightssuccess.com

technological advancements, electronic devices and components become obsolete at an alarming rate. The disposal of outdated hardware, such as servers, routers, and other networking equipment, poses a significant environmental challenge. To combat the negative effects of e-waste, the cybersecurity industry is exploring strategies for responsible electronic waste management. This includes the development of recycling programs, refurbishing initiatives, and designing hardware with recyclability in mind. Adopting a circular economy approach, where products are designed for longevity and easy disassembly, can help minimize the environmental impact of electronic waste. Carbon Neutrality and Offset Programs As environmental awareness grows, cybersecurity companies are increasingly committing to carbon neutrality goals. These companies aim to offset their carbon emissions by investing in renewable energy projects, reforestation initiatives, and other carbon sequestration efforts. Carbon offset programs play a crucial role in mitigating the overall environmental impact of cybersecurity operations.

As the digital landscape continues to expand, it is essential for the cybersecurity industry to proactively address its environmental impact. Through the adoption of energyefficient technologies, responsible e-waste management, carbon offset initiatives, and adherence to environmental regulations, the cybersecurity sector can contribute to a more sustainable and eco-friendly future. Balancing the ever-growing need for digital security with environmental responsibility is a challenge, but it is a challenge that must be met for the benefit of our planet and future generations. The Human Element: Cybersecurity Awareness and Education Beyond technological solutions, the human element plays a crucial role in achieving environmental sustainability in cybersecurity. Raising awareness among cybersecurity professionals about the environmental impact of their work can lead to more eco-conscious decision-making. Training programs and educational initiatives can empower cybersecurity teams to integrate sustainability into their daily operations, fostering a culture of environmental responsibility. International Collaboration and Information Sharing

By participating in these programs, cybersecurity firms not only reduce their carbon footprint but also contribute to broader sustainability goals. This shift towards carbon neutrality aligns with a global push for businesses to take responsibility for their environmental impact and actively work towards a more sustainable future. The Role of Regulation and Certification Governments and industry bodies are recognizing the need to regulate and standardize environmental practices within the cybersecurity sector. Certification programs, such as ISO 14001 for environmental management systems, can help organizations adhere to sustainable practices and demonstrate their commitment to environmental responsibility. Regulations may also require cybersecurity providers to report on their environmental impact, encouraging transparency and accountability. As governments around the world continue to prioritize sustainability, regulations in the cybersecurity sector are likely to evolve, shaping a greener and more responsible industry.

Environmental sustainability in cybersecurity is a global challenge that necessitates international collaboration. Cybersecurity threats transcend borders, and so should efforts to mitigate their environmental impact. Collaborative initiatives, information sharing, and best practice dissemination on a global scale can accelerate the adoption of sustainable cybersecurity practices. International standards and agreements can also guide the industry towards a unified approach to environmental responsibility. Innovation in Sustainable Cybersecurity Practices As the cybersecurity landscape evolves, continuous innovation is essential to meet the dual goals of enhanced security and environmental sustainability. Research and development efforts should focus on creating more energyefficient algorithms, secure coding practices, and sustainable encryption methods. By fostering a culture of innovation within the cybersecurity community, we can drive the development of cutting-edge solutions that are both secure and environmentally friendly.

Environmental sustainability in cybersecurity is an evolving frontier that requires a holistic and collaborative approach. December 2023 | 20 | www.insightssuccess.com
