Africanhistorytodayisunthinkablewithoutknowledgeof therelocationofthetradearteries,thoseconduitsthrough whicheconomiclifeflowsacrossborders.InSouthern Africa,wherenaturethusfarhaspittedtradeagainstthe apocalypticobstacles,thisevolutionfromintegraltransport systemstointegratedlogisticssystemsisathresholdthat altersregionalcooperationandeconomicintegration.
Twenty-fiveyearsago,theWalvisBayCorridorGroup (WBCG)waspresentedwithavisionarychallenge:to establishNamibia'sAtlanticgatewayasacompetitive transitrouteforanentireregion.Thenumbersrepresent partofthismeteoricstory-fromzerocargovolumesin 2000toapproximately2.4milliontonnestoday.But statisticscan'taccountfortheextentofbuildingconfidence inrivalcountriesormaintainingtheminproperworking conditionsduringrecessionsandinternationalpandemics. Thatwasdonebyapersonwhonotonlyknewlogisticsbut individuals,notonlyinfrastructurebutinstitutions,notonly managementbutleadershipinthetruestsenseoftheterm.
MbahupuHippyTjivikuadidnotsetouttorevolutionize Africanlogistics.Hisstorybeginsinamathematicsand scienceclassroomatElladuPlessisSecondarySchool, wherefrom1998to2002,heshapedyoungminds.Those yearsteachinginstilledinhimsomethinginvaluable-the abilitytosimplifycomplexity,communicateavision clearly,anddevelopothers.
BornonJuly30,1973,Tjivikuapursuededucationwith intensity.Hisacademicjourneytookhimfromthe UniversityofNamibia,whereheearnedhisHigher EducationDiplomain1997,toRhodesUniversityinSouth AfricaforaBachelorofEducationwithHonoursin2002. Buthisintellectualcuriositypushedhimfurtheracrossthe AtlantictoWorcester,Massachusetts,wherehepursueda MasterofScienceinOperationsManagementand LeadershipatWorcesterPolytechnicInstitute,completingit inDecember2006.
Thiswasnotmerelyanacademicexercise.Theprogram immersedhiminthesystematicstudyofhoworganizations functionandhowleadershipshapesoutcomes.Histimein theUnitedStatesalsoprovidedpracticalexposurethrough positionsasaMarketingResearcheratCubellisAssociates Inc.inBostonandBusinessDevelopmentConsultantat GlobalStrategicResourcesinWorcester Theseexperiences revealedhowbusinessesidentifyopportunitiesanddevelop strategies,illuminatingpossibilitiesforAfricaninstitutions.
WhenTjivikuareturnedtoNamibiawithhismaster's degree,hecarriedmorethanacademiccredentials.He broughtavisionofwhatAfricaninstitutionscouldbecome iftheyembracedstrategicthinkingandoperational excellence.Thatprecisepaththatwouldleadhimtothe pinnacleofcorridormanagementachievementinAfrica.
In2008,WBCGofferedTjivikuaapositionasProject ManagerforSafeTradeandTransportCorridors.Therole, fundedbytheSwedishInternationalDevelopment CooperationAgency,focusedonroadsafetyand transportationinfrastructure.Onpaper,itseemedlike anotherdevelopmentproject.Inreality,itbecamethe gatewaytohisdefiningcareer.
Tjivikuadiscoveredsomethingunexpected-asectorwhere everythinghehadstudiedandexperiencedsuddenly converged.Histeachingbackgroundhelpedhimunderstand capacitybuilding.Hisoperationsmanagementtraining providedframeworksforanalyzingcomplexsystems.And

TjivikuaquicklygraspedthatSouthernAfrica'slandlocked nationsdependedentirelyonefficienttransportcorridorsto accessglobalmarkets.Adelayatabordercrossingdidnot merelycauseinconveniencetoatruckdriver;itrippled throughsupplychainsandultimatelyaffectedtheprice consumerspaidforgoods.HisthreeyearswithWBCG from2008to2011taughthimthatsuccessfulcorridor managementrequiredequalpartstechnicalexpertise, diplomaticskill,andstrategicvision.
InMay2011,TransNamib,Namibia'sstate-ownedrailway company,appointedTjivikuaasSeniorManagerfor Operations.Themovedeepenedhisunderstandingofhow railwaysformthebackboneofefficientbulkcargo transport.Managingrailoperationsmeantgrapplingwith equipmentmaintenance,schedulingcoordination,safety protocols,andworkforcemanagement.
HisperformanceledtohisappointmentasActingChief ExecutiveOfficerinOctober2014,arolehehelduntilApril 2017whilesimultaneouslyservingasExecutivefor StrategyandStakeholderManagementfromDecember
2013toApril2019.Thisdualresponsibilitydemanded extraordinarybalancingskills-addressingimmediate operationalchallengeswhilepositioningthecompanyfor long-termsuccess.
Duringthisperiod,Tjivikuaalsoservedasapart-time lecturerattheNamibiaUniversityofScienceand TechnologyfromFebruary2016toMay2019,teaching business,strategicmanagement,leadership,andquality managementsystems.Therolekepthimconnectedto emergingtalentandreflectedhisbeliefthatdevelopingthe nextgenerationwasasimportantasmanagingcurrent operations.
BythetimehecompletedabriefstintasTransNamib’s ExecutiveforCommercialandMarketingfromMayto September2019,Tjivikuahadaccumulateda comprehensiveunderstandingoftransportationoperations, strategicmanagement,andorganizationalleadership.His educationcontinuedthroughoutthisperiod,withcertificates inProjectManagementfromtheUniversityofStellenbosch BusinessSchoolin2009andFinancialManagementfrom thePolytechnicofNamibiain2010.In2023,heattended trainingonPortBusinessAnalysisDevelopmentand MarketingattheAntwerp/FlandersPortTrainingCenterin Belgium.
WhenTjivikuareturnedtotheWalvisBayCorridorGroup asChiefExecutiveOfficerinOctober2019,hecameasa fundamentallydifferentprofessionalthantheproject managerwhohadlefteightyearsearlier.Hisdecadeat TransNamibhadforgedhiminthefiresofoperational leadershipandstrategicmanagement.

Thisphilosophytranslatedintoimmediateaction.He focusedonbuildinga"high-performanceculture"within WBCG-anenvironmentwhereexcellenceisexpected, innovationisencouraged,andresultsmatter.Underhis leadership,WBCGhassolidifieditspositionasthebest corridormanagementinstitutioninAfrica.Cargovolumes havegrownsteadilytoapproximately2.4milliontonnes. Perhapsmostimportantly,stakeholderrelationshipshave maturedintostrategicpartnershipsthatextendacrossthe regionandbeyond.



Justmonthsintohistenure,Tjivikuafacedan unprecedentedtest.TheCOVID-19pandemic'simpacton logisticswasimmediateanddevastating.Lockdownsclosed borders.Movementrestrictionshaltedtrucktraffic.For WBCG,whoseentiremandatecenteredonfacilitatingthe movementofgoodsacrossborders,thepandemic representedanexistentialchallenge.
Tjivikuaandhisteamimplementedstrategicinterventions tomaintaintheflowofessentialgoodswhileprotecting workersandcommunities.Theydevelopedprotocolsfor safeoperationsandcoordinatedwithgovernmentsacross theregion.Thecorridor,againstenormousodds,continued tofunction.
Butthecrisisbecameintenselypersonal.Tjivikua contractedaseverecaseofCOVID-19thatthreatenedhis life.Hesurvived,buttheexperienceleftanindeliblemark.
