Thestreamofherleadershiptaleoriginatedlongagointhe midstofoneofthebiggestseas.BornandraisedinPapua NewGuinea,aPacificislandlocatednorthwestof Australia,thesmalltowngirl,Julia,grewupinthe highlandsofPNG.Gorokaisverysimple.Atruedefinition ofasmalltownwhereeveryoneknowseveryone.But somethingaboutPNGthatnotmanypeopleknowaboutisa highlevelofilliteracy.Onlyabout63.4%ofthepopulation isliterate,whichisthelowestinthePacificregion.Thisis duetothefactthatalotofplaceswithinthecountryarestill unreachablebysimplemeans,suchasaccesstoeducation. Alotofuntouchedplacesthatroadsalsodonothaveaccess to.
Andgrowingup,Juliafeelsshewasandstillisfortunate enoughtobeabletotravelbacktothePhilippines,where bothherparentsarefrom.Butbecauseofgrowingupina developingcountrythatisinneedofallbasicnecessities andhavingaccesstoacountrythathasthesimplebasic necessitiesthatPNGlacks,itshapedher,givinghera purposetohelpthelessfortunateandtostepupforpeople whoarenotabletostandupforthemselves.
TheexperiencesJuliahadintermsofleadershipthatreally shapedherwereherexperienceswiththeNon-profit organization―AIESEC―focusedonyouthleadership developmentandcross-culturalexchange.“Itwasthrough thatIdiscoveredmyloveforleadershipdevelopmentandto continuemypassionforhelpingpeople.”
Funnily,though,Julianeverwantedtobeapartofacareer inbusinessoperationsandlogistics.“Ineverwantedto workinthisfield.OrIneverenvisionedmyselfinthis

field.”Shealwayswantedtoworkineithertheartsor history Thiswasbecausegrowingup,bothherparents workedinthecoffeeindustry,andthey’vebeenpartofthe industryforthreedecades.
SoeversinceJuliawasalittlegirl,shewasalreadyexposed tooperations,logistics,andexporting.“Especiallycoffee, thiswasanindustrythatbecamesecondnaturetome.”So, whenshewasoffinschool,shewantedtopickapaththat wasfarfromtheindustryshegrewupin.Butjustlikethe sayinggoes,neversaynever.Nineyearsaftershegraduated highschoolandleftthesmalltownofGoroka,“hereIwas againworkinginthecoffeeindustry.”
Itwasn’ttillabout2023whenJuliarealizedthatthe industryshetriedsohardtostayawayfromwassomething sheenjoyeddoing.“Iamabigcoffeeaddict.Ihaveatleast 3-4coffeesaday AndjustlikeIsaidearlier,thisindustryis secondnaturetome.”Itwasn’ttillshecamebackand startedworkingincoffeethatJuliarealizedtheamountof knowledgeshehadretainedwhilebeingsurroundedbyall thesepeoplewasimmense.Soshedecidedtostaybecause themoreshedidlogisticsandoperations,themoreshe realized,“Ilovethethrillplustheaddedcoffeecomponent aswell,IrealizedIactuallylovedwhatIwasdoing,”and shewantedtokeeppursuingit.Juliaknewthiswasrightfor her.Becauseateverymoment,sheneversawitasworkbut assomethingshejustgenuinelyenjoyeddoing.



Describingherpersonalleadershipphilosophy,Juliasays,it hasalwaysbeenaboutteamdynamics.Evenasaleaderand inallleadershiprolessheheldinthelastdecade,shehas alwaysseenherselfasjustanindividualpartofateam,just likeeveryoneelse,andneverasaboss.“Iamjustsomeone amongthepeoplewhocanspeakupforeveryoneandbe thevoiceofeverybody.”Butreally,evenasaleader,the leaderstilllearnsfromeveryonearoundthem.“Andjust likehowmyblogcontentsgo,we’reallonthisjourneyof self-discovery,togetherleadingeachotherandbeingthere foreachother.”
Moreover,herphilosophyisinfluencedbythepeopleshe grewuparound.GrowingupinPNG,thereweremany momentswherepeoplewithinthetownshegrewupin wouldwanttosaysomething,buttheyweretooscaredto. Orteamsthatwouldlookforsomeonewhowould/could guidethem.“So,really,myphilosophyisinfluencedbymy environmentandsurroundings.”
Also,beingawomanleaderinthefieldcanbedifficultand hasitschallenges.Therearemomentswhenwomenleaders arenevertakenseriously.InJulia’sfield,itcanbe challengingbecausetherearemomentswherehercontentis neverorwouldneverbetakenseriouslybecausesome wouldcallheroverdramatic,“Ihavetoomanyfeelingsor justtoomuchtosay,andeverythingisnottrue.”
Thishasshapedherandhasshapedhergrowthbytaking whatpeoplesayandusingitasfueltokeepgoing.Toshow peoplethatpersonaldevelopmentisimportant.Selfawarenessisimportant.Andthatallemotionsarevalidand okay.Soallthesepersonalchallengeshavebeenusedas fueltoshapehergrowth.
Juliahasinvestedheavilyinherownlearningandpersonal development.Thereisareasonthatdrivesthispassionfor continuousgrowth.Growingup,Juliawasalwaysscrutinizedandcomparedwithalotofpeoplearoundher.“I wouldalwayshearthephrase“She’sbetterthanyou,”and “Whatareyouraccomplishmentscomparedtohers?”
Shecontinues,“Ourworldtodayisfullofmanychanges. TodayIcouldbetalkingaboutsomethingthattomorrow couldbedifferent,orsomethingnewhasturnedout.So,

My personal leadership philosophy has always been team dynamics. Being a woman leader in the field can be difficult and also has its challenges.
I’veinvestedalotofmytimeinmyownlearningand personaldevelopmenttokeepupwithourever-changing world.”Andalsotocontinuetosupplyhermindwith knowledge.Juliaisaverycuriouspersonwhoalwayslikes tolearnnewthings.Thiskeepsheractiveandawareofthe thingsthatarecontinuouslyhappeningandchanging aroundus.
Juliaholdsseveralleadershiprolessimultaneously When askedhowshemanageshertime,energy,andfocus,Julia smiles.“IalwaysliketosayIamaladyofmanyhats.” Someonewhoalwayskeptherselfbusy.Buteventhough withalltheseleadershiproleshappeningatonce,alotof themapartfromherownjob,andarewhatshelikestocall herpassionprojects.“I’vealwayslovedtohelppeopleand todedicatemytimetocertaincauses,andalotofthe leadershiprolesIholdarewithcausesthathavealways beenclosetomyheart.”Sowhenitcomestoenergy,focus, andtime,Juliaalwaysfindswaystodividehertime. Especiallyifitisdoingwhatsheloves,shealwaysfindsthe timetofititintoherschedule.“Andwhenyou’redoing somethingyoulove,timeisjustasuggestion,theenergy andfocuswillbedrivenbytheverythingyouarepassionateabout.”

Authenticity, Honesty, open-mindedness, and community. These are my top four personal values that really guide my everyday decisions and actions.
Authenticity,Honesty,open-mindedness,andcommunity areJulia’stopfourpersonalvaluesthatreallyguideher everydaydecisionsandactions.Shelikestotellherself everydayaboutkeepinganopenmindbecausethishelps herstaycuriousandlearnaboutthemanynewthings. Especiallywhenitcomestolearningwhatpeoplelikeor dislike.Thisalsofitsintodiscoveringnewculturesthatare differentfromherown.“Andbeauthentic,beyourself, becausethebestgiftyoucangiveyourselfandanyoneis beingthetrue,authenticyouandnotsomeoneotherswant youtobe.Lifeisshortforyoutolosewhoyouare,sostay truetoyou.”
Juliavolunteersforcausessuchasarts,culture,child welfare,andeducation.Shetakesmuchinfluencefromthe thingssheispassionateabout.Notjustinthewaysheleads, butinthewaysheviewslifeandgoesaboutlifeaswell. Thesepersonalpassionshavehelpedherbyallowingherto beself-aware.“Honestly,it’snoteasyleadingateam,or justbeingconsideredaleader.Iliketotakeideasand thoughtsfrommymanycausesbyallowingmyselftostay curious,toseewhatisoutthere,whatneedstobe addressed,andwhatneedstobedone.Byknowingallthis, Icansharethisknowledgewitheveryonearoundme.It’s likearippleeffectwhenwecontinuetoshareandbeagood influenceonothers,themoreknowledgecanbespread.”

FromOxfordcertificationstoUKleadershipprograms—theseacademicexperienceshavetransformedJulia asaleader.“Becausetheyhavegivenmeinsightinto differentenvironments.”Theygaveheraglimpseofhow differentplaceshavedonecertainthingsdifferently.Soshe cantakethoselearningsandobservationsandturnthem intoplansthatshecanbuilduponandsharewitheveryone.
Whenaskedtodefinesuccesspersonally,Juliasays,“It’s simple.Tome,successtodayatthisstageinlifeisjust existinginthispresentmoment.Myfamilycamefrom humblebeginnings,andithasalwaysbeenadreamanda goaltofinallylivealifewhereIamabletodothethingsI love.Oneofthoseisvolunteeringandparticipatingin programsthatIhadonlydreamtofasakid.Sosittinghere todayandansweringthesequestions,Iwouldsaytomyself, especiallymyyoungerself‘Look,wemadeit.”It’sstillfar fromhergoals,butJuliacanseeitonthehorizon.“Thatto meIwouldalreadyconsiderasuccess.”Successisthatthe
dreamsshehadasakid,thelifeshehadonlydreamtofasa kid,whichsheisactuallylivingtoday
HerFutureLegacy―BecomingtheVoiceoftheVoiceless
Finally,whenaskedifpeoplewilllookbackonherjourney 10yearsfromnow,whatshehopesthey’llsayaboutheras aleaderandindividual,Juliareplies,“Therereallyisonly onethingIwantpeopletosayaboutmeortoreally remembermeby Andthatwouldbesomeonewhowas thereforpeople.Aleaderwhoalwayshadasmile,a positiveattitude,andwhoguidedthemwhentheythought noonewasthereforthem.”
“IwantpeopletosaythatIbecamethevoicewhennoone elsewas.Someonewhowalkedbesidethemandguided themwhentheyfeltallhopemighthavebeenlost.Strong, resilient,andadreamer,”sheconcludes. CIO















Thereisasignificantchangeoccurringinthe
leadershipworld–onethatisledbywomennot onlygettingpositionsofpowerbutchangingwhat powerlookslike.Thesewomenarenotusingtheoldways ofpower;theyarechangingthewaythosewayswork.They demonstratethatpower,infact,isnottheonethatcomes fromthehierarchy,fromintimidatingorbeingauthoritative -butfrombeingauthentic,havingintegrity,andbeingable toliftotherpeopleup.
Thenextgenerationofwomenleadersissuchthatonecan’t helpbutseethattheyaredeliberatelyrewritingthepower playbookinsteadofengaginginmimicry Thesewomenare designingaleadershipparadigmthatismoreinclusive, moreethical,andismoresensitivetotheintricaciesofthe contemporaryworld.Theyarenotonlyleadingdifferently, butinfact,theyarereshapingleadershipitselfthroughtheir ascents.
Historically,associationofpoweralwaysimplied dominance-loudvoices,unbendingstructures,andatopdownmannerofrule.Today,womeninleadershippositions demonstratethatpowercanbealotmoredelicatethan previouslythought.Theirleadershipemanatesfromasense ofpurposeratherthanfromaplaceofauthority Theygain influencenotthroughcommandbutthroughconnection.
Thenewconceptofpowerisoneofcollaborationrather thancompetition,far-sightednessratherthanegoistic,and beingdown-to-earthratherthanhavingatoohighopinion ofoneself.Thenewpowermodelalsomirrorsthe realizationthatinfluenceisnotaboutbeingontopof people,butbeingwiththem,thatis,listening,learning,and leadingbyanestablishedplan.
Womenleadersrevoltagainsttheold normbynottakingforgrantedthe needforleadershiptobeofacertain kind.Theyintroduceemotional intelligenceintostrategy,empathyinto decision-making,andcollaboration intoinnovation.Thiswaynotonly doestheapproachbreakdowntheold stereotypesbutalsoitsetsbrandnew standardsforexcellence.

Additionally,theirleadershipis characterizedbyresilience-anability toresistbeinglimitedbybiases,barriers,orthepast. Insteadofjustfittingtheexistingleadershipmold,theyare creatingtheirown.Thus,theyshowthatitisnotasuccess thatonemustgiveupone’sauthenticityforandthatone shouldnotrefrainfrombeingcompassionateinorderto acquirepower.
Whiledoingso,theyarechangingthemeaningoftheword ‘strength’.Accordingtothem,strengthisnottheabsenceof vulnerabilitybutthebraverytoacceptit.Itisbeingableto dealwithcomplicatedmattersusingone’sinsightand handlingdifficultsituationsthroughkeepingone’sselfcontrol.
Oneofthemostsignificantwaysinwhichthisleadership transitionhaschangedisthemannerinwhichwomenwield theirinfluence.Insteadofusingitfortheirownbenefit,they spreadthepower Thesetransformersactivelyparticipatein mentorship,effectchangesinrepresentation,andcreate waysforotherstoelevatethemselves.

AnTheygraspthenotionthatbeingatthehelmisnottheir personalwinbutacollectivemovement.Theyestablishthe environmentwheredifferentvoicesarelistenedto,the uniquenessisrespected,andthechancesaregiveninstead ofbeingkept.Theirleadership,thus,becomesavehiclefor vastsuccess,astheyimpactsocieties,notjusthierarchies.
Thisspreadingeffectisdifferentfromtheinitialoneinthat powerisnowseenasasharedresourceratherthanalimited one.Theynotonlybreakdownthebarriersthatlimitwho canleadbutalsointroducenewwaystomeasureleadership andemergeasthemostsignificantforceofchange.
Veryoften,defyingpowerdemandshero-likecourage:the couragethatsupportsthehero'smorality,thecourageto speakoutwhenit’seasiertostaysilent,andtheonehelping tofightagainstthosesystemswhichwerecreatedwithout women'sconsideration.SuchcourageisintheDNAof womenleaders.
Theirdaringisnotnoisy;rather,itisunwavering.Itcanbe seeninthedecisionstheytake,thereformstheysupport,
andthevirtuestheyfollow Theychoosetobetrueto themselvesratherthantoconformandselecttobe instrumentalratherthantobeaccepted.Itisthisvalorthat ischangingthestorylineandopeningupthenewhorizons toallthosewhocomeafterthem.
Whatweseehereisnotapassingtrend,butamovement. Womenformingthismovementareintheprocessoftaking back,reshaping,andredefiningpowerinawaythatsuits thembest.Themovementalsoshowsthatthefutureof leadershipdoesnotneedtobelikethepastinordertobe successful.
Womenleadersaretransformingpower’sgamebyfirst questioningpower’sconventionalnotionsandthen substitutingthemwithsomethingveryhuman,highly organized,andveryimpressive.Moreover,throughtheir leadership,theyaredoingmuchmorethanmerelychanging organizations—theyarechangingtheworld.






LINeadershipnowrequiresalotmorethanjustsound
analyticalskillsortechnicalknow-how Aleader hastoexhibitamoresophisticatedandholistic senseguidedbythesharpstrategicthinkingaswellasthe emotionalintelligenceofthedeepkind.Womenleadersare theones,toaverylargeextent,whoareeverywhereinthe world,progressivelycomingupwiththiswinningformula.
Andtheydosignalthattheimpactofleadershipdoubles whenthetwoforcesnamelystrategy-driventhinkingand empathy-ledfeelingarecombined.Infact,theunique advantageofbeingabletointegratenotonlyone'sthought andfeelingbutalsoone'sforesightandethics,aswellas resultsandrelationshipsiswhatmostdistinctly characterizeswomenleaders.
Foralongtime,leadershiphasbeenidentifiedmainlywith theuseofstrategyleadingtological,forward-thinking,and decision-makingprocesses.Nevertheless,aswork environmentschangeandnewtrendsemerge,theuseof strategyinisolationisnolongersufficient.Thefirstthing thatcomestomindaboutthepresentsituationinleadership isamixofvaluesstronglyadvocatingforauthenticity, connection,andengagementasopposedtomere performance.
