Welcome Bon Bini

January 1st of 2014 marked a very important milestone in world history; it was 100 years to the day that the miracle of commercial flight was born. On 1st January 1914, Tony Jannus flew a Benoist airboat across the bay from St Petersburg to Tampa, Florida, in a 23-minute journey with a single paying passenger, Abraham C. Pheil, thus marking the birth of the global airline industry. That moment changed how humans connect forever.

Celebrating 100 years of Commercial Aviation by: edward heerenveen The, 55 hours and 58 minutes, flight of the Snip from Amsterdam to Curaçao 1934.

Aviation on Curaçao

The aviation industry on Curaçao developed rapidly since 1928 when Charles Lindbergh landed his Sikorsky flying boat in the harbor of Curaçao. The local firm S.E.L. Maduro & Sons (established 1837) was there to provide agency services to the plane and Mr. Lindbergh. Six years later, in 1934 the first “airmail” arrived from Amsterdam in Curaçao on KLM’s “Snip” and it was again S.E.L. Maduro & Sons who was called upon to attend to the aircraft. The aforementioned events depict the involvement of the 176-year old firm from the humble beginnings, and so it

comes as no surprise that S.E.L. Maduro & Sons is one of the founding shareholders of InselAir International.

ALM

With the SNIP-flight, KLM wanted to make Curaçao the hub of their American operations and incorporated their West Indies Division in 1964 in ‘Antilliaanse Luchtvaart Maatschappij’ (ALM) which commenced operations with an inaugural flight from Curaçao to Aruba on August 1st, 1964. In 1969, the government of Curaçao acquired a majority interest in ALM. ALM, and its successors, served as the main airline of the Netherlands Antilles between 1964 - 2004.

InselAir’s first flight

On 28 August 2006 InselAir’s first flight took place, from Curaçao to Aruba. This was celebrated with its founders, first employees and first customers. InselAir has, since that historical day, grown into a significant player in the PanAmerican Region, employing over 500 people, owning 12 aircraft and transporting over 1.000.000 passengers yearly. Although we are only in our 8th year of existence, we are proud to be part of 100 years of commercial aviation.

Avianca was initially registered in Barranquilla under the name SCADTA (Sociedad Colombo Alemana de Transporte Aéreo) in 1919 and was the first airline in the Americas. From Barranquilla, SADCA operated flights to various destinations, including Curaçao. After World War 2, SCADTA merged (1940) with Colombian regional carrier SACO (Colombian Air Service, established in 1933) and together they formed Avianca. Soon InselAir will re-establish the historical CuraçaoBarranquilla route in close cooperation with KLM and by doing so re-connecting the roots of the worlds’ 2 oldest airlines.

And talking about space; tickets to space are already being sold as we speak and plans are in de making for a commercial spaceport

Flight 7i401 ready for boarding First InselAir flight to Aruba

on Curaçao. Soon after that we will be able to visit, explore and discover other planets. This also requires a different kind of airport infrastructure in the future. Once aircraft… or spaceships should I say, are able to take off vertically we no longer need long runways for instance. Airports… or spaceports can be developed on a minimal (use of) surface. is still true today. Also from a mechanical and technical point of view, an aircraft today still flies based on the same principles as 100 year ago such as lift, thrust and speed.

What does the future hold?

In these 100 years, commercial aviation has transformed the world in ways unimaginable in 1914, such as re-uniting loved ones, connecting cultures, expanding minds, opening up markets and saving lives. Although developments occur in an incredible high pace, some elements of aviation are still similar to 100 years ago. The industry for instance, has always had an appealing, sexy and adventurous image and this

standard is set by Airbus’ A380 series which can transport over 500 passengers! Increasing the amount of passengers per flight will lower the cost of travel which will enable even more people to explore the beautiful world we live in. We will also see a significant decrease in travel time once we are able to escape earth’s atmosphere and travel through orbit where aircraft move at incredibly fast speeds using gravitational forces.

Looking back on 100 years of commercial aviation is also an opportunity to look ahead to what another century of air travel could do for the world. Think of the amount of passengers that can be transported on 1 single flight; the world could not believe that a DC-8 could transport between 124 to 189 passengers in one time. And when Boeing introduced its 747, people where amazed that it could hold over 400 people. Nowadays’

Safety first

InselAirs’ focus is to continue to connect the world ever-more safely and sustainably and delivering great customer service to our passengers along the way. And when I think how far we have already come since we started on that August 28th 2006, I am very excited by what future generations will gain from air travel. Because of your desire to travel, to explore and to stretch boundaries, future generations will have the opportunity to experience further developments in air and space travel to the extend which is unbelievable. Introducing Mondi Lodge Curaçao’s Perfect Getaway for Outdoor Enthusiasts For a serene, yet memorable stay on Curaçao, Mondi Lodge is the obvious choice. A mere 15-minute drive from the airport, this inn is a place unlike any other. It is located in the St. Michiel neighborhood, which is surrounded by Curaçao’s archetypal nature. With only three palapa suites, there will be few other guests at Mondi Lodge during your stay. A family-run business, the owners put the guests’ needs

InselAir Reaching Higher

Their around the clock service allows you to freely knock on their door anytime. So it doesn’t get more relaxing than this. You feel the love and dedication that went into Mondi Lodge. What is absolutely incredible is the respect the owners show for nature by balancing the constructions with the surrounding natural environment. The owners have built the palapas from wood by hand and added the typical thatched roof.

More impressively, they have managed to integrate each palapa into the ‘mondi,’ natural environment. You can’t help but get a sense of homecoming when you arrive at Mondi Lodge, no matter how foreign everything may seem to you.

The themed palapa suites make for a comfortable stay for one or two people and there is even space for a ‘third wheel.’ Each palapa comes with an ensuite bathroom, sizeable deck and kitchenette. All the suites look very wel-

In any case, you will have a hard time leaving this slice of heaven once you’ve settled in this divine dwelling. If it weren’t for the fact that Curaçao has so much beauty to offer, anyone would be easily tempted to just stay at the lodge.

The Hosts

Mondi Lodge’s location used to be a sanctuary for all kinds of animals. The family patriarch, George De Haseth grew up surrounded by goats, sheep, donkeys, deer, ducks, chicken, turkey, cats and dogs. Him and his wife dreamed of turning the property into a hotel for a long time. Now they can finally use their many years of experience in the tourism industry, with the help of their daughter Danita and her fiancee Jairo, to make Mondi Lodge a reality. The three Palapa

Awesomely Green

Built by the owners with natural materials, Mondi Lodge is run by Green principles. You can feel the love and care that went into the construction of the suites. The palapas, which are subjected to the raw rural nature, simply radiate positivism and tranquility. Each deck and room is beautifully decorated with rugged-chic handmade furniture and lamps. Guests are encouraged to adopt the same green values as the owners by using water and electricity effectively. Also, remember that a towel can do its job for more than one day.

The Area

Mondi Lodge is located amidst the wild nature, but you are encouraged to explore the amazing natural habitat in the area. A wonderful experience awaits you if you decide to go hiking or biking around. Make sure not to miss the saltpans, home of the flamingoes, the lakes and the Mal Pais Nature Park isn’t too far away. Who knows you may even spot a white tailed deer out there.

Boca Sami

A very interesting fishing ‘village.’ Unless you are coming by sea, there is only one road that connects Boca Sami to the rest of the island. It is not your standard touristy spot, which is exactly what makes Boca’s unspoiled nature magical. The village has two beaches, the main ‘playa’ and Snake Bay, where the divers flock. Make sure to sign up for diving classes.

Organoleptic Food Experience at Ubuntu Wellness Center Eating with all five senses From the moment we set foot on the property at Ubuntu Wellness Center, calmness had set over us. It took us a minute or two to realize that the entrance was curiously located at the back of the house and not the customary front. As we were walking towards the back, we started to hear relaxing music, soon followed by the smell of fresh herbs and incense. Our host, Cheraldine Osepa, welcomed us to Ubuntu with a smile on her face and explained the day’s menu to us. This made us even more excited to begin the wonderful vegetar-

ian food experience that we were about to enjoy. We had no idea that we were about to be blown away. Customers have to make a lunch reservation at Ubuntu. The reason for this isn’t just because the seating is limited; but also because Cheraldine wants to make sure that the freshest food is available to her customers. Don’t get me wrong, she won’t turn you away, only she may not have everything on the day’s menu to offer as her meals are carefully prepared to provide each guest with a wonderful food experience.

Our meal

By the time we sat down at the table we were in a total state of relaxation. We started off with an energizing, vitamin rich ‘borojo’ juice and learned about its origins and how it was prepared followed by a cream of cabbage soup. Our main course was a delight, the bean burgers were memorable and the composition of the carrot salad was unlike anything we have ever tasted. We made sure not to leave a single molecule on our plates.

At Ubuntu Wellness Center everything is cooked from scratch. Cheraldine is very involved with the food preparation, diffusing the food’s energy before preparing it with love. She makes use of Ayurvedic spices when she is preparing her meals and has managed to, interestingly, completely let go of cultural imprint and commercialization of cooking. Instead, Cheraldine applies intuitive cooking in her kitchen. “I have removed myself completely from all dogmas of cooking,” says Cheraldine who almost never looks at cookbooks. “By letting go of tenets, a whole new world opened,” she explains. “I now let the ingredients guide me and don’t go by any predesigned plan as I am now in service of the food.”

Eating at Ubuntu is an experience where you will engage all your senses. Cheraldine makes sure that our eyes, nose, tongue, ears and hands are all being fed at her table. Her philosophy is for us to eat closely to food. The meals are fantastic and well-balanced and you will not miss anything else at Ubuntu. So if you value great quality, are curious and adventurous, do not hesitate and make a reservation.

Treatments

Ubuntu means the essence of humanity and the interconnectedness to earth, which is exactly what this colorful yet relaxing environment calls for. Through the different treatments, this wellness center works on the physical, emotional, mental and all other levels of human existence. Cheraldine, a licenced theraputician, works with different oils and herbs. She is certified in body detoxing. “I have treatments to detox the face, body, spirit and even your private parts,” she clarifies. “Our bodies may harbor toxins and if you want them to come out, it won’t always be pleasant,” says Cheraldine. Turns out, what people want isn’t exactly what they need. “A lymphatic massage for instance is great for weight loss, but can be quite painful. I find that clients sometimes have the expectation that it’s a relaxation massage. Therefore I like to take my time to explain each treatment to clients before engaging. The deep relaxation and a feeling of wellbeing comes after the treatment.”

Foot Detox

One of the most popular treatments at Ubuntu Wellness, the foot detox is meant to remove toxins from your body through your feet. Your foot will be placed in a tub of water that changes color based on the organs that are detoxed. This treatment is a client favorite and comes highly recommended.

Mother Earth Balance Massage

The mother of massages, this treatment is all about restoring contact with nature in order to reconnect oneself and find new direction. It lasts about three hours, so eat lightly and make sure there is a well-balanced meal waiting for you after. The Mother Earth Balance Massage includes mud packing, scrubbing, bathing, stretching, and full relaxation in the open air. Ubuntu has regular movie showings and hosts workshops on spirituality, nutrition, breathing, massage techniques, belly dancing, nature, lifestyle and tantra on the regular. The urban roots of street art

Part of the attraction to street art is the fact that by taking art to the streets, you create a canvas wherever there is a wall. This is also part of the controversy behind it. The freedom of time and space to create art wherever there is an open wall has created a democratic art-form which brings art to places not traditionally thought of as a place you would go to see art -because they’re not. This freedom in time and space can also explain the international nature of its current scene. Street art can be seen from the streets of London to New York, Sao Paolo to Sydney. Street artists are no longer completely underground, either. For example, the world’s most powerful man, Barrack Obama, used a street artist named Shepard Fairey for his 2008 ‘HOPE’ campaign posters. These posters were so wildly successful that they were partially credited with his victory in the presidential election. InselAir Reaching Higher

No: 21 | Apr - Jun 2014

Street art has come a long ways from its underground roots on the subway cars and streets of New York City. The urban roots of street art, which many still refer to as graffiti, have given this art-form a unique path in the art world. An art-form originally only practiced by gangs and hip hop groups, now has a broad range of practitioners. The urban roots, however, have formed a unique art movement; one which has been embraced by the young, and is still frequently misunderstood by the old.

Yet still many people have a negative connotation attached to the words ‘street art’ or ‘graffiti’. It is my personal belief that this is because they have not been exposed to high quality works by some of the world’s greatest street artists. There are a few global centres where the world’s best street artists come to paint. Miami is fortunate enough to be one of these centres. On your next trip to Miami make sure to check out the Wynwood district to see some works by some of the world’s best street artists. Below are profiles of four international artists who have painted on the streets of Miami.

Jaz

Jaz is one of Argentina’s most famous street artists. He is famous for his lifelike creation of the musculature of animals and humans. Frequently he will combine the two to create a half human, half animal form. He also enjoys painting combat scenes, and will study the poses he

wants to create in order to have eerily accurate reproductions of boxers and fighters. His painting style is unique in that he uses caulk, street tar, and other building materials to give his paintings very earthy colours. Although he can paint with spray paint, he now predominantly paints with brushes. Symmetry is important in his work.

Roa

Roa is a Belgian artist, and is one of the most prolific street artists painting today. He has painted across the world; from London to South Africa, the Australian outback to Argentina. Roa enjoys painting scavengers and small animals which are native to the place where he’s painting. He paints almost completely in black and white, and his paintings are incredibly life-like in nature. This attention to detail can be seen in how he prepares for each work. He has been known to go as far as

visiting the local zoo in order to get a more accurate sketching of the animal, how it moves, and its defining features. All of this culminates in beautiful representations of animals that aren’t regularly seen as beautiful.

Aryz

Aryz is a young street artist out of Barcelona. He has become famous for his large scale murals, frequently covering the entire side of a multi-story building. His murals are usually humans or animals painted anatomically correct, and commonly showing their bones. The use of bones in his murals can make some of his paintings cryptic in nature. He commonly works with pastel colours, which adds another unique aspect to his pieces. He

shapes, painted with the help of stencils. These shapes are usually painted in vibrant colours which give his work a psychedelic brightness.

“If museums always seemed stuffy or boring, why not check out a funky part of town where your cultural fix is part of the cityscape?” is widely touted as one of the most talented street artists working today, and at 24 he has a very bright future ahead of him.

Stinkfish

Stinkfish brings his craft to walls around the world, but began on the streets of Bogota, Colombia. Stinkfish loves to paint portraits, and the inspiration for his portraits range from friends and family, to pictures he finds discarded on the street. His signature is his wild

These four artists are only a small sample of the artists you will find in the Wynwood district of Miami. If you have never encountered top level street art before, I hope the murals in Miami are a beautiful highlight of your trip. My personal passion for the art-form began in Rio de Janeiro while there for an extended trip in 2012. I fell so deeply in love with street art that I seek it out every time I visit a new city. While my friends are looking for the best museums or funkiest shops, I am in full-on

street art safari mode. Through searching for street art, I have seen parts of cities which I never would have encountered otherwise. There are many things that can capture our interest when we travel. If modern art is a passion of yours, maybe you are ready to explore some of the world’s most innovative modern art on the streets of Miami. If museums always seemed stuffy or boring, why not check out a funky part of town where your cultural fix is part of the cityscape? One of the beauties of street art is the fact that there is no admission fee. The open air aspect of street art allows people who wouldn’t normally seek out art to have a chance to appreciate a beautiful work. So get out into the Miami sun! And once you are tired of the beach walk the streets of Wynwood, grab a coffee, and see some of the world’s top street art, including works by Jaz, Roa, Aryz, and Stinkfish. InselAir Reaching Higher

Jaz

In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira

Roa

A breakaway from the nowadays

A Trip to Ciudad Bolívar, Antioqia’s Secret Coffee Trail A small town of 30.000 people, Ciudad Bolívar is located in the heart of the coffee region. This coffee destination is less popular to tourists as it is located a few hours outside of the more popular coffee triangle. As a tourist, you will inevitably feel out of place during your visit, as locals will probably look at you curiously.

With its beautiful colonial architecture and overwhelmingly green surroundings, the Colombian hospitality is even more welcoming in this region. Word has it that the coffee plantation owners are more than happy to provide a free tour of the farms in the area, which are owned by Colombian families. Visitors will discover a lot at these coffee farms. You will learn all about the production of coffee and how beans are selected. The most interesting experience is the

smelling and tasting of different properties in order to find out, which beans have the best flavor and most strength. Visit Agropecuaria, the company that buys the beans from farmers, turns them into coffee and then distributes it. After spending the day in the fields, have a seat at Café de los Andes on the plaza for one of the best cups of coffee in Colombia, even their iced coffee is delish. Ciudad Bolívar is a mere three-hour bus ride away from Medellín’s Southern bus terminal, making it a perfect quick getaway from the city’s hustle and bustle.

For a more adventurous visit:

Soar across the coffee fields on a 447-meter long zip line or enjoy the scenery from the aerial tramline. In any case, the view from the top is an experience unlike any other. A not-to-miss adventure is a quad to ride

through the coffee fields. For more info visit landadventuretravel.com How to get there: Busses leave daily from Medellín’s Southern Bus Terminal for Ciudad Bolívar.

Fallarones

Make a quick stop at Fallarones while you’re out there. This small town of a few hundred, spectacularly covered by coffee mountains, is a 30-minute drive from Ciudad Bolívar. Jeeps leave from Bolívar’s La Zona Rosa for a scenic ride through the town’s amazing coffee farms and waterfalls.

Total Relaxation at Medellín’s Best Parks

One of the best things that Medellin has to offer is its landscape. There are parks practically everywhere that function as an oasis in the middle of the busy city life providing people with much needed Zen. InselAir Reaching Higher

Barefoot Park

A true haven of relaxation, Barefoot Park is all about stimulating your senses as you experience the different surfaces when you are walking around. You have to take off your shoes as you enter the park and start by walking through the grass fields. Feel how the grass relaxes your senses and caresses your feet. As you come to total relaxation, your next stop is to experience the sand between your toes. Allow the sand to massage your feet and end your day by wetting your feet in the crystal clear water pool. As the jet streams down from the fountains, allow the water to massage your feet. Stroll through the green bamboo forest, as the sound of the breeze traveling through the trees will bring you to peace. It’s the perfect place to rest in the shade.

The Lights Park

Formerly know as Parque de los Cisneros, the Lights Park is where architecture meets culture. This square has 300 light columns, each 24 meters high, 2100 reflectors and 170 floor lamps that turn this park into a modern public space. It is easily accessible as it is across one of the most important bus stops in the city. By day this park is all about relaxing and by night, when the lights come to life, your visit will turn into a really remarkable experience. InselAir Reaching Higher

Parque El Salado

Parque El Salado is a great place to ease your mind. It is a sanctuary way up on the hills of Envigado, Medellin’s most traditional sector. You will encounter many street vendors on your way there so make sure to buy some strawberries. For less than 3$ you can walk and swim in the many natural pools. Zip lining is also an option and if you’re lucky you might even see some monkeys in the trees. If you plan on spending the day with friends or family, make sure to set up your BBQ as it’s permitted! How to get there: Take the metro to the Envigado stop then hop on the bus that says ‘El Salado.”

Hacienda Nápoles

Located approximately 4 hours east of Medellin, this once country home and headquarters of Pablo Escobar, Hacienda Nápoles, has been remade into a family friendly, safari themed weekend destination. For 16$ you get to experience a day at this 20 square kilometers farm. The first thing you see upon your arrival is the plane that carried the first shipment of cocaine that Escobar delivered to the U.S. mounted on top of the entrance. This already gives an indication of this interesting experience that awaits you.

As Escobar grew richer, he started to import exotic animals like giraffes, elephants and ostriches to live on the property. To this day, it sill has the largest population of wild hippos outside of Africa who live in the hilly, green manmade lakes. The old bullring has been redesigned into an African Museum and the aquatic park ‘Aquasaurus,’ is a perfect family getaway, while the butterfly park is very special. Escobar’s home still stands on the property, however in complete disrepair. There are posters and photos that reflect the terror he put Colombia through. According to authorities, it is morally impossible to restore the home back to its former glory. The best way to get around is by car or motored a rickshaw for 26$ for a full day.

Jibe City Windsurfing

Sorobon beach

After arriving at Sorobon beach, it was obvious to him that the natural surroundings of Lac Bay were the best place to set up shop… and so he did. “At first I wanted to just do short board rentals from sailing spots over the whole Island with my Rambler Rebel station wagon. But soon I realized the bay is the best place to sail and I decided to build a shack for my boards and sails. First Jibe City was called “Windsurfing Bonaire” But as the conditions are so good to Jibe I called it “Jibe City” after “Swell City” in the Gorge.”

In 1988 a man named Ernst Van Vliet, originally from Holland, started Jibe City out of the trunk of his car. Ernst could often be seen windsurfing in Kralendijk, or cruising around Bonaire with surfboards strapped to his car, looking for the next great place to launch into the water.

Enhancements

In the beginning there were not half the people sailing on the waters of Bonaire as there are now. So one might say that this one man, the man, Ernst, is the reason we all take those fifteen odd flights to get down here for these amazing conditions. Ernst knew if you build it they will come; and they did! “In January 1989 me and my two dogs, Rebel and Lucky started to clean the beach and I build the Shack.” That shack has transformed over these two decades since Ernst first arrived. But still the true Bonairean dream survives. In 2007, when Ernst found it was time to say goodbye to Lac Bay. Over these recent years there have been even more enhancements, but no matter what you do to it, Jibe City still remains the same laid back, warm, best place in the world to windsurf!

About Bonaire

A dry and windy island yet bursting with colour, Bonaire is a gem of a destination. The Tourism Board and STINAPA

“In January 1989 me and my two dogs, Rebel and Lucky started to clean the beach and I build the Shack.” (Stichting Nationale Parken Nederlands Antillen) work hard to ensure a balance between nature and the many visitors to the island. It’s brightly painted buildings, the shimmering turquoise bay, the giant pyramids of salt standing alongside the strikingly pink waters, the vivid green and yellow lorikeets and the flocks of coral pink flamingos all leave a lasting impression of colour. Just 24 miles (39km) long by 3-7 miles (511km) wide, Bonaire lies 50 miles north of Venezuela and outside of the hurricane belt. Its easterly trade winds blow year round with

the higher winds prevailing generally from mid-December through to August. The average yearly temperature is 28°C (82°F), sea temperature 27°C (80°F) and rainfall approximately 22 inches. Aruba, a small island in the Caribbean sea popular for its beautiful beaches, white sand and radiant sunshine and has a large number of monuments that recall the history of the island to offer it’s visitors who are also looking for some history, culture and a learning experience besides relaxing and having fun on our happy island. In Aruba there are about 350 monuments that can be admired throughout the island.

Architectural witnesses

Monuments are often perceived as mere ancient buildings of stone, concrete , sand and lime. But a monument is much more than that, they are objects of more than 50 years old that are considered to be of general interest for its architectural beauty , its contribution to the science and history of the country or its ethnological value. The monuments of Aruba have also contributed to the development of the Island, some have played an important role in the defense of the island in times of war, others have been and remain symbols of love, others being simple architectural buildings have provided water to great part of the population, there are also some reflecting the gold rush period and the history of trade in Aruba. Some monuments have contributed to the maritime history on the island and others being simple typical houses, sometimes even forgotten preserve stories of great value.

Protection in times of war

In one area of the island called Juwana Morto (dead iguana) a coastal battery was built in 1940 , with the motive to protect the island from attacks by the Germans during World War II. The battery consisted of one command post, three artilleries, bunkers and ammunition depot of which the remains can still be seen. The bunkers were also the foundation for the cannons. The soldiers gave nicknames to the cannons such as Betsy , Jopie and Beppie . At Sero Colorado there were artilleries built as a support to this coastal battery. You can still admire the remaining of these artilleries on Sero Colorado and also from there you can enjoy a beautiful sea view and with good weather and a little luck you can see the peninsula of Paraguana .

Monument of Love

On the Wilhelminastreet in Oranjestad there is a beautiful large green and white house which was built in 1925 by Dr. James Eloy Arends. The

reason for the construction of this beautiful house was the marriage with his great love Maria Monica Lacle . In those days it was customary that marriage could only take place after the groom could offer his bride a completely finished house on the day of the wedding. This beautiful Monument is currently the City Hall of Aruba and continues to witness the love of hundreds of local couples and visitors who are united in marriage here every day.

Water

In the center of Oranjestad and at the east of the Island in San Nicolas also known as the “sunrise side of the island “ two identical towers can be observed, these water towers remind us of the history of water on the island. The first seawater distillation plant was built in 1933 due to the shortage of water at that time on the island. During the peak hours in the morning and in the afternoon the water pressure was very low this was the reason the decision was made

InselAir Reaching Higher

The Gold Rush

In 1824 a goat herder had found a gold nugget. This finding led to the beginning of the gold rush period in Aruba. In 1872 a gold smelter was built of gabbro stones by the Aruba Island Gold Mining Company, which we know today as the

ruins of Bushiribana. The gold containing stones were extracted in Sero Cristal, these were transported to Bushiribana to be milled and processed to extract the gold to be exported. Bushiribana was transferred to several different mining companies through the years, and in 1899 a new gold smelter was built in Franse Pas and Bushiribana was then abandoned. Today there is only a ruin reminiscent of the gold rush in Aruba that ended in 1915. In 2013 Bushiribana was the venue for the Royal party to welcome our New King, His Majesty Willem Alexander.

Maritime history

On the eastern tip of the island is the famous California Lighthouse. This tower of about 30 meters high was built between 1914 and 1916. The name “California“ came from a vessel of the West India Company and Pacific Steamship Co. called “California” that shipwrecked in the area. Therefore they came up with the idea of building a lighthouse that could indicate with its light the island’s eastern tip to seafarers. Today the lighthouse is a landmark of Aruba and is visited daily by hundreds of tourists. The Lighthouse is going to be completely restored by the Monuments Foundation of Aruba (SMFA) and will be opened again after restoration for visitors to enjoy the beautiful view from the top. These are just some of the many monuments in Aruba that have witnessed the development and past of the island and still shelters the stories of our past in their walls.

The Foundation Monuments of Aruba

With the intention of preserving our monuments the Monuments Foundation of Aruba was founded in 1996 (Stichting Monumentenfonds Aruba). Its main objective is to preserve our monuments through purchase, acquisition, restoration, rental and management of these. In addition the Foundation also promotes and raises awareness among locals and visitors of the value of monuments through activities, media and education. For more information about the Monuments Foundation of Aruba visit our website: www.monumentenfondsaruba.com or our Face book page Stichting Monumenten Fonds Aruba.

City Hall - Wilhelminastreet, Oranjestad, Aruba

Wood-carved Souvenirs and Jungle Tours

presented in Tropical Hominess

During a leisurely stroll through the historic center of Paramaribo, we bumped into a small and common souvenir shop with a tropical appeal; it had an aura of hominess. We felt at ease immediately and were cordially greeted by a most friendly lady who assured us that we were more than welcome to enter her establishment.

We could not believe our eyes as we glanced at the assortment of articles. Turtles, snakes and many other souvenirs, all carved out of wood. The friendly lady, Ms. Cathrin J端rdell, thoroughly explained which types woods and materials were used to make these fine works of art. Thanks to her elaborate explanation, we can now distinguish the various types of wood: letterhout, motosi, purperhart and bruinhart from each other. We can also recognize patawa, a distinctive type of palm wood commonly used to make salad tossing utensils. With much pride and zeal, she continued explaining that all items were made

In the Spotlight En el Punto de Mira by local handcrafters from almost every corner of the nation. Each souvenir was exquisitely ‘finished the touch of true workmanship’ and if we had not come to the realization that they were carved out of wood, [obviously, they were at full-size] we would have thought that they were real animals! Ms. Jürdell is the manager and owner of the shop and in a time span of approximately seven years, her business has become a household name in the tourism branch of Paramaribo. She personally buys each object and she keeps the following criteria in the back of her mind, “Would I want this piece of art in my home?”

Painted artwork

Furthermore, a variety of painted artwork graced the walls. Paintings by the renowned artist Anand Dwarka; ‘pen drawings’ depicting Surinam’s typical wooden houses skillfully painted by Lloyd Hasselbaink; and the exceptionally colorful paintings by Kenneth Graskamp with the animals of the Amazon as the main theme, are all very striking.

Sibi Busi designs

In a showcase, one can find different ornaments: necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and belts– all made by indigenous Amatopo and Kwamalasemutu tribeswomen. These ornaments are currently known under the trademark, Sibi Busi designs’, Jürdell explains. “Two years ago, we have started branding our ornaments. We have spoken to some women from the inlands and we have told them what our intentions were and after drafting some designs, we initiated the manufacturing process. To me, it is of vital importance, to always use the right quality of materials and, of course, when making these objects, we continually strive to stick to the initial design plans. But do not get me wrong, I am excited when handcrafters enter the store with ornaments inspired and crafted by their own imagination and creativity.”

Traditional Surinamese attire Then, all of a sudden, three individuals dressed in full regalia appeared from another room.

Ms. Jürdell, manager and owner of the shop

Once fully dressed in traditional Surinamese attire, they take snapshots―smiling Caucasian faces dressed in a koto, indigenous and Hindi costumes, amongst others. Jürdell continues, “We are the only business in Surinam that offers this service to its customers. We have different types of clothing from most if not all the various ethnic groups of Surinam which are either intended for males, females and children. Now, the visitors have a ‘photographic souvenir’ which serves as a permanent remembrance of their vacation in Surinam.”

Touring the rainforest

At the coffee table, a young couple enjoys a cup of coffee. “These visitors would like to make a tour through the nation’s rainforest. My assistant explains the various tours we offer which are currently present in our database; the count is almost 60. It is important to observe what kind of clients are standing in front of you and to inquire what their wishes are hence we suggest a tour based on their given answers. It is not wise to suggest a jungle expedition to visitors who cannot or do not want to sleep in a hammock. If the visitors have children, it would be absurd to offer a tour where they would have to drive countless hours on a bumpy road to reach a destination where the only thing they can do is fishing. Both parties will mutually reap the benefits when the appropriate tour has been offered and sold.”

Sranan Tongo

Embarking on a tour is unfortunately not possible for us, but we could not resist buying up some souvenirs for ourselves and the kids at home. Upon leaving the homely souvenir shop, we took the opportunity to verbally exchange some words we have learned in Sranan Tongo and we said, “Tan bun” which was heartily replied by a contagious and well-meant “Kon esi baka.” Koto - a traditional Surinamese costume Tan bun - Till later Kon esi baka - Come back soon Sranan Tongo - Lingua Franca of Surinam InselAir Reaching Higher

InselAir Reaching Higher

No: 21 | Apr - Jun 2014

Aquafari

the most unique underwater experience

The perfect family activity

Curaçao has one of the best underwater paradises of the Caribbean. Take your friends and family to Pirate Bay, Piscadera and the Aquafari crew will provide you with a fun and adventurous underwater journey. Glide effortlessly under the sea in your personal self-propelled, submersible scooter. Observe a variety of beautiful fishes and watch them as they swiftly disappear among the colorful coral reefs. The clear water will give you perfect and wide view of the stunning surrounding. Curaçao is one of the few places in the Caribbean that can give you the opportunity to explore the sea with a submersible scooter.

How does it work?

Prior to the Aquafari experience, our experts will take plenty of time to give instructions in order for your underwater journey to be a safe and pleasant one. The scooters are all self propelled and eco friendly are easy to drive. With no diving or scuba experience needed, no uncomfortable restraints, and no conventional dive equipment, explore the deep and see the wonders through the clear glass of the breathing bubble. The divers will give you directions underwater to either take pictures or to tell you to head over to a certain spot. The excursion has duration of approximately 35 minutes so there is plenty of time to see a lot of beautiful sights under water. Just bring along a swimsuit and a towel. The Aquafari crew will take care of the rest.

Excursion restrictions Curaçao is known for its beautiful nature and beaches. Still many have yet to discover the amazing underwater life the island has to offer. Beautiful fishes, gorgeous coral reefs and amazing shipwrecks are just a few of the things you can encounter under the pristine blue waters. The most common thing to do is to suit up and dive. You can also buy a submarine, but that would not be an obvious choice. Why not try Aquafari? The coolest way to discover the underwater world has reached Curaçao. Aquafari will take you there in a unique way. InselAir Reaching Higher
