From the typical ‘Gaita’ music in Venezuela, to the delicious Jamaican red wine and rum fruitcakes, everywhere people celebrate Christmas in their own special way as you can read in this edition of INsights.

Business as usual

For us it means that we are working extra hard during the Holidays Season to get everyone comfortably and on time to their destination. It also means that some of our colleagues will not be able to enjoy a vacation during these special days. But realizing that tens of thousands will, makes it all worth it.

A city full of twinkling lights

If Paris is the city of lights, then Medellín must be a close relative for when night falls the city is as beautiful as it gets. The cityscape, deep in a valley surrounded by hills and mountains, allows for a spectacular view of the communes that are located on these elevated slopes.

Its beauty culminates after sunset, when the city shines bright like millions of diamonds.

Residents decorate their homes and yards festively as they prepare for the Holidays to kick in. What makes this season unique are the themed Christmas Lights display that are placed all over the city, an occurrence that attracts thousands of visitors every year. Last year’s display was titled “Nature, Life, and Light” it was put together with 18 million colorful shimmering lights.

This cultural homage has been baptized as the festival of the light a mere 2 years ago.

Millions are invested in this annual tradition and with reason. It brings thousands to the city. The city’s utility company EPM and the state government take the opportunity to shed light on the local Christmas traditions of Medellín with this wonderful installation.

in Full Blown Color An Inspiring Interview with HGTV Superstar David Bromstad

Nuestro equipo aquí en Insights Magazine ha venido siguiendo la carrera televisiva del diseñador de interiores y presentador David Bromstad desde sus inicios en el 2006, cuando compitió en la primera temporada del programa HGTV Design Star, un show de telerealidad en el que los participantes compiten para obtener su propio show en HGTV, y del que salió ganador.

Ahora, en su propio show, Color Splash, uno de los más vistos de la red HGTV, vemos a David transformar aburridos espacios en vibrantes Shangri-Las. El show ha estado en el aire desde 2007 y por ahora no parece que desaparecerá.

No sorprende que esta carismática personalidad televisiva sea igual a como se presenta en televisión. En persona es un tipo simple, igual a como se ve en pantalla. Es por eso que para nosotros de Insights es un gran placer compartir con nuestros lectores esta interesantísima entrevista, en esta edición de fin de año. Deseábamos que nuestra última edición del año fuera algo especial, ¿y qué mejor manera de dar impacto a nuestra portada que con un personaje tan inspirador?

Me sorprendieron tanto el gesto como su comentario, ¡y

Our team at Insights Magazine has been following interior designer and TV host David Bromstad’s Television career since its very beginning back in 2006 when he competed and won the original HGTV Design Star, a reality competition show where contestants compete for their own show on HGTV. His own TV spin-off Color Splash, where we see David transform dull rooms into vibrant Shangri-Las, is one of the network’s top rated shows. It has been on air since 2007 and is not about to go anywhere anytime soon.

It comes as no surprise that what you see is what you get when it comes to this charismatic TV personality. He is without a doubt, as down to earth in person as on Television.

It is therefore a tremendous pleasure for Insights to share this wonderful interview in this Holiday issue with our readers. We wanted our last issue of the year to be special and what better way than to grace our cover with such an inspirational individual.

After months of planning and waiting for our schedules to overlap, the day finally came when David greeted me with a warm hug at a Staples event in New York City, where he was the guest of honor. “You look like you needed it,” he said cheerily as he let go of the embrace. I was taken aback by both the gesture and the comment. I mean he was absolutely right; I was super excited to meet him, but it had been a long day of me run-

ning around all over the city and my energy level had been on a low. David’s hug charged me up as I absorbed some of his positive energy, making me ready to engage in this very long anticipated interview.

With such an infectious optimism, it soon became clear that David’s TV personality is not an act! And another pleasant revelation is the fact that he looks even better in person than on TV! Understandably, I came to the conclusion that he must know the secret to living a happy life. “I have always been a very positive and happy person,” he chuckles. “It really just comes from my family. My motto is to not let

Interview Entrevista life get you down because it’s not going to do you any good,” he says happily, encouraging me to forget my own worries. “I don’t even let stress get to me and I always keep smiling.

When you keep smiling and have an energetic attitude people are really going to respond to that! They are going to be like, ah! Someone’s happy around me and I love it!”

Career

All this positive energy has paid off as David’s career is currently at its peak and by the look of things; he is only going to fly higher. He went from winning a competition to starring in his own reality TV show.

He is also a regular on other shows and was last season’s HGTV Star’s host. Needless to say he is a force to be reckoned with. Color Splash got picked up for another season and airing started again last September. As if this isn’t impressive enough, David was awarded the Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce business person of the year award last June, which was sponsored by Sherwin Williams. The special ceremony was a wonderful way of gaining the well deserved recognition from his peers for all his amazing work. “Just to be recognized by such an affluent community and organization is just

really awesome,” he says. “It was kind of a shock and complete honor. At the same time it definitely validates that I set out to do the right thing, which is to become a brand and business,” he said with poise.

David isn’t going anywhere; us fans can rest assured he has even more in store for us. “I will be in some more shows, which is really exciting but what you are probably interested in is the fact that we may be developing a new TV series but we’ll see,” he laughs mysteriously.

Of course he is not able to divulge anything else on the matter, but no worries because aside from hosting his own show, David is keeping busy working on several projects simultaneously. He is currently in the research and development phase of a fabulous candle and a rug line set to come out soon. “We are working through the details with manufacturing at the moment, but my Bed & Bath collection is currently sold on amazon.com.”

David is also about to embark on yet another exciting project as the creative consultant for the River Landing Development, where he will liven up the residential and retail space with interesting arts, sculptures, unique lighting, creating a space where buyers can feel right at home. “I’m just going to make it fun,” he says. “The potential buyer will see the space as a destination after I’m done with it.”

This project is simply a realization of the goals that David set for himself when he decided to participate on Design Star seven years ago that ended up skyrocketing his career. “There are 2 reasons why I started a career in Television,” explains David, “one was to become a brand in order to develop a furniture and accessories line, which we are literally developing as we speak. The other reason was to catapult my career so that I can do commercial work as a designer and creative consultant for other projects,” so there you have it.

Es como si hubiera absorbido algo de su energía positiva, preparándome para iniciar esta entrevista que por tanto tiempo había anticipado.

Otra agradable sorpresa fue que, de hecho, es mucho más apuesto en persona que en televisión! Como es lógico, concluí que él debía tener el secreto de la felicidad. “Siempre he sido una persona muy positiva y alegre,” me dijo riéndose entre dientes. “Esto lo tengo de familia. Mi lema es no dejar que la vida te deprima porque eso de nada sirve,” me dijo alegre, estimulándome a dejar a un lado mis propias preocupaciones. “No permito que me venza ni el estrés y siempre sigo sonriendo. ¡Cuando uno sigue sonriendo y tiene una actitud energética, la gente responde de verdad! Pareciera que sienten algo así como, “¡Mira! ¡Alguien alegre en mi vecindario! ¡Me encanta!”

Carrera

Y tanta energía positiva ha dado frutos. Actualmente, David se encuentra en la cumbre de su carrera y todo indica que seguirá remontándose a mayores alturas. Empezó ganando una competencia, pasó a ser presentador de su propio show de telerealidad, aparece con frecuencia en otros shows y fue el presentador de la última temporada de HGTV Star.

Además, sobra decir que se ha convertido en una personalidad que ya no se puede ignorar.

Se aprobó la producción de otra temporada de Color Splash y el show empezó a transmitirse nuevamente en septiembre. Y como si fuera poco, el pasado junio, David fue galardonado por el Miami-Dade Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce como empresario del año en junio pasado, que fue patrocinada por Sherwin Williams. La ceremonia especial fue una manera maravillosa de ganarse ese tan bien

Pero lo que más te interesará oír es que quizá desarrollemos una nueva serie de televisión. Pero esperemos a ver qué sucede,” dijo entre risas y con aire de misterio. Claro que no puede divulgar más detalles al respecto, pero eso no es problema porque además de presentar su propio show, David está ocupado trabajando en varios proyectos al mismo tiempo. Actualmente, tiene una fabulosa vela y una línea de alfombrillas en etapa de investigación y desarrollo que ya pronto lanzará al mercado. “Nos estamos encargando de los últimos detalles de fabricación, pero mi colección de Cama y Baño sí ya está disponible en Amazon.com”.

David también está por embarcarse en otro emocionante proyecto como asesor creativo de River Landing Development, en donde dará más vida a los espacios residenciales y comerciales por medio de obras de arte y esculturas interesantes, y efectos de iluminación únicos, creando espacios en donde el comprador se sienta perfectamente en casa. “Simplemente voy a hacer que sea más divertido,” dice. “Cuando haya terminado mi trabajo, el potencial comprador verá el espacio como su potencial destino”.

Este proyecto es, sin más, la realización de una de las metas que se había fijado David cuando decidió participar en Design Star hace siete años, lanzando así su carrera a las alturas. “Me metí a una carrera en televisión por 2 motivos,” explica David. “En primer lugar, quería llegar a tener mi propia marca para poder crear una línea de muebles y accesorios, o sea, precisamente lo que estamos haciendo en

estos momentos. Y en segundo lugar, quería lanzar mi carrera a fin de poder trabajar comercialmente como diseñador y asesor creativo para otros proyectos”. Dicho y hecho.

De diseñador de interiores a diseñador de moda

Y hablando de proyectos, los aficionados a la moda estarán simplemente encantados de oír que empezará a escribir otro capítulo en su ya tan versátil carrera. Nos contó un pajarito que David está desarrollando una línea de zapatos y accesorios. Cuando lo “interrogamos” al respecto, se puso a reír entre dientes y digo “me descubriste”. Pero se complació en compartir con nosotros algunas de sus ideas. “La verdad es que todavía no lo hemos divulgado, pero estoy diseñando zapatos para damas. Básicamente, lo que hice es crear una pintura que estamos convirtiendo en un patrón de estampado para zapatos. La línea se lanzará el próximo verano,” dijo David, claramente ansioso.

Es probable que la moda resulte ser un formato algo diferente del medio al cual está acostumbrado, pero será simplemente otra expresión de su arte, así que bien pudiera sentirse perfectamente en casa en esa nueva área. Y de hecho, así es precisamente como InselAir Reaching Higher

From Interior Designer to Fashion Designer

Speaking of projects, fashion aficionados will be over the moon when they hear that David is opening a new chapter in his already versatile career. A little birdie spilled the beans on a secret shoes and accessories fashion line that is currently being developed. When ‘confronted’ he gave a little “you caught me” giggle but was nonetheless pleased to share some insights with us. “Well, we are still keeping this quiet but I am currently designing ladies shoes. Basically, I have painted a painting and we are turning it into a print, which will be put on shoes. This line will come out next summer,” says an eager David.

Fashion may be different from what he is used to but it is still an expression of his artistry so if anything, this could be the most natural thing in the world, which is exactly how he feels about it. “I have to say that this is probably one of the more fun projects

Muchos desean desesperadamente dar algo de color a sus hogares, pero no tienen ni idea de cómo hacerlo correctamente. El resultado suele ser ya bien un desastre o un espacio aburrido y sin vida. David, e mismísimo maestro de los colores, recomienda a los daltonianos ir poco a poco. “Hay quienes piensan, ‘me encanta el rojo, así que voy a pintar mi cuarto o mis paredes de rojo,’ ¡pero así no va la cosa!”, dice David apasionadamente. “En mis diseños verás que muchas veces los colores que resaltan son los de los accesorios, las almohadas, los floreros o quizá un mueble. No utilizo mucho color en las paredes simplemente porque InselAir Reaching Higher

that I’ve worked on just because it’s such a departure for me, yet it makes such perfect sense and we’re having such a wonderful time working on it,” David explains.

Planning Your Space

Many people are desperate to bring color into their home, as they have no clue how to go about this; they either make a mess of things or end up with a dull looking space. David, who is the master of color himself, advises the color challenged to ease into it. “Some people think ‘hey I love red so I’m going to paint my room or wall red, ’that’s definitely not the way to go about it,” he says passionately. “If you look at my designs, a lot of my colors come from my accessories, pillows,

vases, or maybe a piece of furniture. I don’t use a lot of colors on the walls just because it’s a big commitment and it’s hard to pull off.” So what he’s basically saying is that we should buy a lot of home accessories? “In fact overbuy and what you don’t like you just take back,” says David.

When it comes to interior design, the cardinal rule in David’s book is to pay attention to your space plan. Furniture and accessories shopping is a big commitment so you need to plan your space and stick to it. “People see a really big couch and say ‘oh I love this’, they buy it and by the time it’s delivered, it either doesn’t fit through the door or in their space.

“I love to clump up different trees together to create a Christmas forest” las consecuencias son de muy largo plazo y resulta muy difícil obtener realmente un buen resultado de esa forma.” ¿O sea que tu recomendación sería más bien comprar mucho accesorios para la casa? “Precisamente,” contesta David. “¡De hecho, es buena idea comprar accesorios de más y luego devolver a la tienda lo que a uno no le guste!”

En lo que respecta el diseño de interiores, la regla cardinal para David es ser muy cuidadoso al planear el espacio. Hay que tener en cuenta que la selección de muebles y accesorios tiene sus consecuencias. Por eso es importante planear el espacio del que se dispone y apegarse a esos planes. “A veces, uno ve un enorme sofá y dice, “¡Mira eso, me encanta!” Lo compra y cuando lo entregan resulta que no cabe por la puerta o en el espacio. Es muy importante ir de compras

con los parámetros de su casa en mente y cerciorarse de que sus muebles no excedan las dimensiones planeadas,” explica David.

“Si los muebles son demasiado grandes o pequeños para el espacio, el efecto será que su casa lucirá desordenada.”

Su mejor consejo tiene que ver con el color de las pinturas. “Siempre, pero siempre, el color de la pintura debe ser lo último que se escoge,” dice muy enfáticamente. Y es que sabe muy bien que la gente suele hacer todo lo contrario. “No tiene sentido. ¡La pintura es el material más barato que se va a necesitar y hay miles y miles de colores de los cuales escoger! Un sofá le puede costar miles de dólares y la selección de telas es muy limitada.

Por eso, por favor, diseñe su espacio primero y deje la escogencia del color de la pintura como lo último, para que complemente el espacio”.

His best piece of advice is regarding paint color, “always and I mean always pick your paint color last,” he says fervently. He is well aware that people generally tend to do the opposite. “It makes no sense. Paint is the cheapest thing you’re going to buy and there are thousands of colors to choose from! If you buy a couch for thousands of dollars there’s very limited fabrics to choose from. So please design your space first and pick your paint color last to go with it.”

David just seems to have this tremendous gift when it comes to his work. His fans just love how bold and adventurous he is with his designs, especially when it comes to colors. With a 100% success rate, I think that we can all agree

that he always seems to capture the essence of what his clients want. The secret to his success is not a supernatural ability to read minds. It all comes down to good old research. “Hmmm my secret to keeping my clients happy?” says David laughing. Basically I do a lot of research with my clients, I have them pull mood boards and look books. I want to know what are the things they really love so I make sure to have extensive conversations with them. In truth, a lot of my clients don’t really know what they’re doing so I always end up putting my twist on it. In the end, it is all about making sure the space is livable and exciting.”

Preparing for the Holiday Season

People go all out for the Christmas Holidays in the Caribbean and Latin America. Miami has a more mellow vibe in general as many of its residents are transplants from all over the place and they go back home to spend

the break with their families. The city is beautifully decorated; the trees are doused with lights giving it a classy look. Yet, David spends his Christmas with his family in Minnesota where it’s cold and snowing. “There is nothing like a white Christmas. I wouldn’t want to trade this for anything else in the world,” which is precisely why he owns a total of 15 Christmas trees. “I love to clump up different trees together to create a Christmas forest,” which is a lot of fun,” says David excitedly. “If you don’t want to do a Christmas forest, you can put one tree in every room!

You can even do a kid’s tree, a kitchen tree, an outdoor tree or whatever you want! One way you can afford this is if you go shopping on the 26th when everything is 50% off.“

Miami

We know where David loves to spend his Christmas, but when he’s home in Miami he loves going to the Wynwood Art Walk.

“It takes place every second Saturday of the month. It’s basically located right next to the design district,” says David. This of course sounds fabulous, as it is precisely where the growth is really happening in Miami. “There is so much happening down there! There are tons of galleries, you can drink wine and have food. It’s all really fantastic. And my other Miami favorite is to go to the beach.

There is nothing like a Miami Beach. It’s really wonderful!”

En lo que respecta su trabajo, el talento de David es algo que salta a la vista. A sus fans les encanta ver sus osados y aventureros diseños, en particular por los colores que usa. En vista de su tasa de éxito, o sea el 100%, me parece que podemos concordar en que siempre logra captar la esencia de lo que sus clientes quieren. El secreto de su éxito no es que posea un poder sobrenatural para leer sus mentes, sino más bien simple y llana investigación cabal. “Hmmm… ¿Mi secreto para mantener a mis clientes satisfechos?” pregunta David entre risas. Básicamente, investigo extensamente sus gustos. Les pido que escojan paneles de inspiración y hojeen libros. Me interesa saber qué les gusta de verdad, y por eso me aseguro de poder conversar bastante con ellos. La verdad es que muchos de mis clientes no saben lo que están haciendo, de manera que siempre termino dándole mi propio toque al asunto. A final de cuentas, lo principal es asegurarse de que el espacio sea habitable e interesante”.

Preparativos de fin de año

En el Caribe y Latinoamérica, la gente no escatima en gastos para las festividades de fin de año. Por lo general, en Miami el ambiente es más tranquilo ya que muchos de los que residen ahí son inmigrantes de todas partes que vuelven a casa para pasar las vacaciones con sus familiares. La ciudad se adorna con hermosas decoraciones. Los árboles son colmados de lucecitas, que llenan la ciudad de elegancia. Aun así, David pasa la Navidad con su familia en Minnesota, donde hace frío y cae nieve. “No hay nada como una Navidad blanca. No cambiaría esto por nada del mundo.”

Por eso mismo, es dueño de un total de 15 árboles de Navidad. “Me encanta amontonar varios árboles diferentes para crear un bosque navideño.

Es muy divertido,” dice David, emocionado. “Si no quieres hacer un bosque navideño, ¡puedes poner un árbol en cada cuarto! Hasta puedes hacer un árbol para los niños, otro para la cocina, otro para tenerlo afuera, ¡o lo que quieras! Una forma de poder pagarlo es ir de compras el 26, cuando todo viene con un 50% de descuento.”

Miami

Ya sabemos dónde le gusta a David pasar el fin de año, pero cuando está de vuelta en casa, en Miami, le encanta visitar el Paseo de arte Wynwood.

“Se organiza cada segundo sábado del mes. Básicamente, queda justo al lado del distrito del diseño”, dice David. Esto claro, suena fabuloso, porque es esa precisamente el área de más crecimiento en Miami. “¡Hay de todo!

December is by far the hottest month in Anguilla! The weather is warm and breezy, but the roads are packed with people driving around. The skies are filled with private planes bringing down the jet set to spend the Christmas Holidays on the island. You will most likely run into a celebrity during your stay, as this is their go-to-off-the-radar spot.

The beaches are crowded, the dashing parties more frequent and the Christmas lights illuminating.

Make sure to witness the Christmas tree lighting ceremony, the Christmas Fair, live concerts, late night parties, and the Christmas Village if you are traveling with kids. At the top of the list is the Festival de Noel. A weeklong celebration with theater performances, concerts, steel band competitions and much more!

This British Overseas Territory is not known for shopping but if you happen to be a foodie, then you are in paradise. You will find the traditional stuffed turkey for Christmas dinner, but nothing beats the local Cray Fish, boiled in seawater with potatoes, veggies and coconut milk. The Cray Fish is similar to baby lobsters.

A popular hangout spot is the Sandbar, where no reservation is needed as it works on a first come, first serve basis. Cap Jujuca with its Moorish style architecture is the perfect lodging if money is no object. It takes only 15 minutes by plane to get to Saba from St. Maarten, but the landing is by far a very scary life experience due to the airport’s incredibly short landing strip, which is less than 400m. On top of that both ends of the tarmac has cliffs dropping into the sea! Not to worry though, only trained pilots flying small STOL airliners may land there so you should be perfectly safe, although this does not take the scary part away!

This idyllic destination is known as the Caribbean’s ‘Unspoiled Queen’. It is a teeny, secluded rock of 13 square kilometers that is perfect for a romantic getaway or honeymoon. Este idílico destino se conoce como la “Reina Inmaculada” del Caribe. Es un peñón pequeñito y apartado de 13 kilómetros cuadrados que constituye un lugar perfecto para escaparte con tu pareja o pasar tu luna de miel. Su montaña más elevada mide 890 metros y es la más alta del Reino de los Países Bajos, lo que hace que esta isla sea perfecta para caminar y explorar la naturaleza. ¡Pero ojo! No es un destino típico de playas ni de fiestas. De hecho, la isla ni siquiera cuenta con un casino. Con aproximadamente 2000 habitantes, es el lugar ideal para relajarte y reconectarte contigo mismo o con esa persona especial durante este paseo.

Por más tranquilas que sean las actividades de la isla, los habitantes de Saba sí saben cómo disfrutar la vida, así que en Navidad serás entretenido por gente que toca música desde sus casas o en las calles. The Myth of Piedra Bonaire Birthplace of Boynay, the first Bonairean

The eastern cove Boca Onima is known for shipwreck diving and the occasional surfing, but it has much more to offer. Closely located to the inland village of Rincon, this area also happens to have the most intact and well-preserved petroglyphs on the island. Luckily, these rock paintings remain well protected behind a fence, avoiding risks of any man-inflicted damage. Boca Onima is also home to the ‘Krus’ in North Salina, which is considered to be a holy place.

Piedra Bonaire

Boca Onima is home to several spiritual places, but the most sacred one is without a doubt, Piedra Bonaire “Bonaire Stone”, which is believed to be the birthplace of Boynay, the first Bonairean. Boynay is the son of Baranka Mama “Divine Mother Stone”, who lives deep under the island in Luga Bibu “The Living Place.”

The Piedra Bonaire is not to be confused with the Baranca Mama itself, but it represents the navel rock of Bonaire and the umbilical cord that once attached Boynay to Baranca Mama’s

La ensenada oriental Boca Onima es famosa como sitio en donde practicar el buceo en naufragios así como de vez en cuando el surf, pero tiene mucho más que ofrecer. Y es que en esta área, cerca del pueblo de Rincón, también se encuentran los petroglifos más intactos y bien preservados de toda la isla. Menos mal que estas pinturas rupestres se encuentran bien protegidas por una cerca, para evitar cualquier riesgo de daños de origen humano. En Boca Onima también se encuentra la Crus de Nort Salina, que se considera un lugar sagrado.

Piedra Bonaire

Boca Onima es un área de múltiples sitios con significado espiritual, pero el principal es sin duda Piedra Bonaire, considerada el lugar en que nació Boynay, el primer Bonairiano. Boynay es hijo de Baranka Mama, la “divina peña madre” que vive en lo profundo de la isla, en Lugá Bibu “el lugar vivo.” La Piedra Bonaire no debe confundirse con la Baranka Mama. La piedra representa el ombligo de la isla y el cordón umbilical que en un tiempo solía conectar a Boynay al vientre de la Baranka Mama. En Bonaire, hasta el día de hoy la Piedra Bonaire es considerada un lugar místico. Whether you believe this to be myth or truth, no one can deny that the Piedra Bonaire has a small cave that seems to have tremendous healing powers. Many injured or sick animals spend the night there and they seem to recover from their ailment by the time they leave the cave. Also, when it is their time of passing, animals lie in this cave in order to depart from this world in a more timely fashion. It is believed that a force coming from deep beneath the ground has healing powers and is able to speed up the dying process. The many animal bones found in this cave attest to this.

Guturucu

There is a belief on the ABC islands that you belong to the place where your umbilical cord is buried. According to myth, no matter where your umbilical cord is buried in Bonaire, it can always be traced back to Piedra Bonaire.

If you were born on the island and you leave, traditionally you were always to take a sack of Guturucu, sacred soil that only be found at Piedra Bonaire, with you abroad. This way you will always have a part of Bonaire with you.

There is even a ritual that can be performed inside the Piedra Bonaire cave, which includes climbing through the animal bones for a mystical rebirth and spiritual purification.

Indian Petroglyphs

Crea uno o no en el mito, según se dice, en Piedra Bonaire hay una pequeña cueva con grandes poderes sanativos en donde muchos animales heridos o enfermos pasan la noche y ya para cuando abandonan la cueva, parecen haberse recuperado. También se dice que cuando sienten que van a morir, se van a dormir en la cueva a fin de abandonar el mundo de manera más rápida. Se dice que una energía que emana de muy por debajo de la superficie tiene poderes curativos y es capaz de acelerar el proceso de la muerte. Los muchos huesos animales que se encuentran en la cueva dan fuerza a esa creencia.

Guturucu

En las islas ABC se dice que uno pertenece al lugar en donde fue enterrado su ombligo. Dice el mito que, sin importar en dónde se haya enterrado el ombligo de uno en Bonaire, siempre se remonta a Piedra Bonaire. Al abandonar la isla, los oriundos tradicionalmente debían llevarse una bolsa de Guturucu, tierra santa que solo se encuentra en Piedra Bonaire. De esa forma, siempre llevaban parte de Bonaire cerca. Incluso se practica un ritual dentro de la cueva de Piedra Bonaire en el que se debe trepar entre la osamenta animal para experimentar un renacimiento y una purificación espirituales.

However, it is not just the decorum and music that brings people here. At Netto Bar it is all about the “Green Rum” or Ròm Bèrdè in Papiamentu, which is not to be confused as a Saint Patrick’s Day specialty drink, which is not even celebrated in Curaçao.

It lacks the international fame of Blue Curaçao, but is 100% homegrown. The fact that it can only be found on this island makes it quite special attracting Dutch Royalty, ministers and other celebrities.

Ernesto passed away in 2004 just before he was able to celebrate the 50th celebration of Netto Bar. His prodigy, Jesus Chu Zimmerman continues with the tradition of making and serving the rum to costumers.

A pesar de no gozar de la misma fama internacional que tiene el Blue Curaçao, y aunque no se exporta a nivel mundial, el Ròm Bèrdè es sin embargo un producto 100 por ciento nacional.

El simple hecho de que sólo se consigue en esta isla le da un atractivo muy especial al que no son inmunes la realeza holandesa, los ministros y otras celebridades.

El Ròm Bèrdè es creación del ya difunto Ernesto “Neto” Koster, quien lo preparara por primera vez siendo aún era muy joven.

Pasó a realizar su sueño de toda la vida al abrir su propio negocio, el Netto Bar, poco antes de cumplir los treinta años.

Fue así que el Ròm Bèrdè fue adquiriendo fama en la isla a partir de 1954.

En la actualidad, el “Ron Verde” ya no se vende exclusivamente en ese bar, sino que también se consigue en supermercados y tiendas locales.

Ernesto falleció en el 2004, justo antes de celebrar el 50 aniversario de Netto Bar. Su sucesor, Jesus “Chu” Zimmerman, continúa con la tradición de producir y servir el ron a sus clientes. Es el único que conoce la receta, y sigue trabajando conforme al lema que aplicó Netto durante toda su vida: “Trabajar hasta que se le chorree a uno el sudor de la frente para alcanzar todas sus metas en la vida y, siempre que se pueda, ayudar al prójimo.”

Parque Arví, The Promised Land Social Responsible Tourism

One of the largest nature reserves in the world, Parque Arví is located on the eastern ridge of Medellín at an altitude of 2350 meters above sea level.

Referred as the ‘Promised Land’ by the local indigenous community, visiting this park almost feels like entering a dream. You can go there by car or bus, as it is about 16 kilometers from Medellín. Yet, the most adventurous way to get there is most definitely by hopping on the Metrocable Line L, which leaves from the Santo Domingo commune.

If you are into outdoor sports then this is a great place for hiking, kayaking, climbing, and fishing as they are all very popular. The hiking trail is quite hilly but the breathtaking views and wonderful sunsets make up for it.

Some of the popular viewing locations are La Laguna, Patio Bonito, La Meseta, La Paloma and Cerro Verde. Parque Arví also has 119 different types of bird species so make sure to keep an eye out for them.

Flower Festival

Santa Elena is home of the silletas, the flamboyant flower arrangement, that form the foundation of the Feria de las Flores Medellín. The cooler weather and rich soil makes Santa Elena the perfect location to grow the local varieties of flowers that are exported all over the world. The festival takes place every August where the flower growers of Santa Elena build amazing works of art with flowers. The silleteros walk down from Santa Elena with the designs on their backs. The main event is the parade but many citizens and tourists make their way to the streets the night before to see the construction of the works that these silleteros are about to parade the next day.

The park closes at 6:00 PM but there are some areas that close earlier so make sure to get there early. Once you arrive at the park you are greeted with brochures to help you on your way or you can visit their website for more information.

El Parque Arví, una de las reservas naturales más grandes del mundo, está ubicado en la cordillera oriental de Medellín, a 2350 metros sobre el nivel del mar. Christmas in Haiti

Christmas in Haiti is similar to the Christmas celebrations in the US, although Haitian Christmas has its own special characteristics. Throughout December people decorate their house with traditional Christmas lanterns, called “fanals”, made by local craftsmen. On Christmas Eve families and friends gather to celebrate.

A traditional drink for the occasion is anisette, which is a mild alcoholic beverage made from anise leaves soaked in rum and sweetened with sugar. Children often place their cleaned shoes filled with straw under the Christmas tree or outside the front door, so that Papa Noël hopefully replaces the straw with presents.

On Christmas eve people have a late night meal called “le Réveillon de Noël”.

Last year, the city of Medellin was decorated with over 18 million lights and is known for that worldwide. December 16th is the beginning of the Christmas tradition ‘Novenas’ where - for nine successive nights - people pray. These nine days symbolize Mary’s pregnancy with baby Jesus. Novenas is also a time to get together to eat and drink.

People from the Dominican Republic are rich in Christmas spirit. A single day is simply not enough to properly celebrate Christmas. Dominican Christmas lasts for almost 3 months. From November to January, handmade wooden decorations are being displayed in and around the house.
