Volume I Issue 2
"True life is lived when tiny changes occur." ~ Tolstoy
[ MIND THOUGHTS ] Guess whose back! It’s about that time of year again ‐‐ the first day of class has returned. In this issue we have a great interview with Bobbito Garcia and if you don’t know who he is then find out! We have a great deal of events planned for this year. They include getting a renowned artist on campus; several movie screenings and other events. We are fielding numerous fundraising ideas to accomplish these goals. The interest in FOKUS is growing and it’s good to see this happening. The more people who enter the club and are active will only bring greater results than before. Look for the logo around campus and constant improvements. I look forward to hearing from everyone. ~ Prime
These are questions many people have asked in response to the loud yellow bands that have increasingly become an accessory for everyone’s style this summer. Fashion statement? Maybe, but the craze is simply a proud declaration of support; both from the American and worldwide public, for cancer, its research, and most importantly, it’s SURVIVORS. Cyclist Lance Armstrong made noise again this summer not only with his 6th straight win in the Tour de France, but also with the release of the cancer tribute, yellow “LIVESTRONG” wristband, compliments of his foundation; the Lance Armstrong Foundation [LAF].
Live Strong is an educational program within LAF, encouraging all members of the cancer survivor community [relative, friend, caregiver, healthcare provider, supporters, or MASS MEETING COMING SOON! survivors themselves] to ‘live strong’ through and beyond the physical, emotional, and BE ON THE LOOK OUT FOR FLYERS & EMAILS FOR THE DATE ‐‐ ALL STUDENTS practical challenges of their survivorship. According to the official website, “The Lance ARE WELCOMED TO JOIN!!! Armstrong Foundation (LAF) believes that knowledge is power and attitude is everything. From the moment your survivorship begins on the day of diagnosis, [they] provide the [ LIFESTYLE ] information and tools you need to live strong.” So what is the focus of the wristband campaign? LAF’s mission is to raise 5 million dollars to fund the continued efforts towards cancer research. “Yellow wakes me up in the morning. Yellow gets me on the bike every day. Yellow has taught me the true meaning of sacrifice. Yellow makes me suffer. Yellow is the reason I’m here.”
When asked how they got their bands around their wrists, peers of mine explained that with a donation of only 1 dollar to Lance’s foundation, they were both able to support this selfless cause as well as promote the need for cancer awareness and action.
