hh... the lazy days of summer! For most of us that is. But for our area lifeguards it's just another busy day on the job! Read how they spend their day protecting the rest of us from harm. Lobsters beware! It's lobster season and the hunt is on! While the divers are chasing lobster, landlubbers can experience the miracle of watching sea turtle hatchlings erupt from their nests and sprint to the water.

There's so much to see and do during the summer. The northerners have returned home leaving our streets a bit quieter and the waiting time at restaurants much shorter. Now's time for full time residents to live like tourists and vacation in your own backyard.

Guardians of the Beach

T

he idea of a lifeguard may conjure images of hunky guys and bikini-clad girls working summer jobs and soaking up the sun on the beach. But the truth is our area lifeguards are seasoned athletes, expert swimmers and highly trained and certified in life saving procedures. They are more than just the guardians of our safety in and out of the water, they are the guardians of our vacation fun and treasured ‘beach day’ memories.

Every day the sun is shining, there are scores of beachgoers enjoying the sand and surf. Their safety falls squarely on the shoulders of these lifeguards who monitor the water and diligently watch for any danger that lurks beneath the surface.

While many think of sharks, the biggest hazard to swimmers is the rip current, which can pull a swimmer out to sea.

“Half of our rescues and assists occur during the months of March and April”, explained Nathan Rieck, Captain of the

City of Vero Beach lifeguards. “The prevailing southeast winds in the spring create stronger rip currents and there aren’t as many swimmers in the water. Northern

visitors frequent the beach in the winter months but few venture into the surf”.

Rip currents account for over 80% of rescues performed by surf beach lifeguards. The greatest safety precaution that can be taken is to recognize the danger of rip currents and always swim

at a beach with lifeguards. The United States Lifesaving Association has calculated the chance that a person will drown while attending a beach protected

by USLA affiliation lifeguards at 1 in 18 million. But when swimming in an unguarded beach how you respond can be the difference between life and death.

Another commonly overlooked danger is the shore break. “People love to body surf and they don’t account for the wave breaking so close the shore” continued Rieck. “The force of a wave crashing against the sand can easily break bones, scrape skin and in the worse case scenario snap someone’s neck. It’s our job as lifeguards to educate the public about those dangers and prevent a tragedy from happening. Fortunately, the state has taken the lead in educating the public about water conditions and rip currents.

Of course, there’s no better safety precaution than watching out for each other on the beach and in the surf. Parents need to be ever vigilant with their children as they play in the water. The guards will often descend from the tower and walk the beach talking to the visitors. They may warn them not to touch the pretty blue man-o-wars with the wicked sting, or to be aware of the severe drop off at the shoreline. They offer minor first aid for cuts, jellyfish stings or sunburn and often act as local ambassadors offering suggestions on where to buy sunscreen or where to eat after a day at the beach.

When a lifeguard sees a person in distress he first assesses the situation before hitting the water. Often times a swimmer is able to navigate the current and easily swim back in on his own accord. With two guards in each tower a rescue is a team effort with one guard taking the plunge while the other keeps his eyes focused on the swimmer. Both assist in bringing the swimmer on shore and administering any lifesaving measures. All guards

have first responder medical training as EMTs and are certified by the United States Lifeguard Association. The City and County provide emergency backup.

Being a lifeguard is not a summer job…it’s a lifetime commitment.

“Our guards are experienced career guards,” said John Frazier, Captain of the IRC lifeguards. “I’ve been here for 28 years myself. We recruit guards with experience and all the certifications in place. We have guards ranging in age from 19 to 62.” Indian River County and the City of Vero combined employ 19 full-time lifeguards and 15 part-time guards. Both male and female applicants are welcome though males still outnumber the females. “Most of us do it for the love of the ocean and the desire to help others” continued Frazier. “I’ve been doing some sort of life guarding since I was 14 years old.”

Johnathan Billings chose the profession because he didn’t want to be in an office setting. “I couldn’t see myself in some cubicle, it’s like being in a box.

Of course, as a life guard I actually do sit in a box all day.” he laughs. “ Fact is, I love the ocean and it’s my life. It runs though my veins. And being able to assist others is the greatest job ever.

What other office has a view like this?”

Lifeguards in Training

Indian River County has been offering a Junior Lifeguard Program for 27 years and has trained local children how to handle themselves and others in the water, even if they don’t choose it as a career. The goal of the program is to provide the youth of our community with a sound aquatic background and acquaint them with the hazards and opportunities of our beaches while exposing them to an environment that will teach courtesy, respect and good sportsmanship. Assistance with career development to those who are seeking employment as a lifeguard is also offered.

“Honestly, every child in Florida should have this training” explained Frazier.

“After all, we are literally surrounded by water and you never know when someone close to you may need assistance.”

There are three; 2-week sessions offered each summer for children ages 9-17. Applicants must be able to swim 100 yards and run ¾ of a mile without stopping. Each day starts with a mile run and is followed by beach drills and water safety training supervised by county lifeguards. But the program does more than just teach lifesaving skills. It teaches life lessons. Ryan Giulianotti has been in the Junior Lifeguard program for 5 years and is one of the junior captains.

When asked what he has learned this young teen gave an inspiring response: “I learned how to be a humble leader and to respect my fellow junior lifeguards”. While he may or not pursue life guarding as a full-time profession he believes he will utilize his life guarding skills throughout his adult life.

What’s in a name?

D

iscovered in 1975, Florida’s Oculina Banks are deep-water coral reefs located 15 to 20 miles off shore from Daytona to Fort Pierce.

While the reef inspired the name for our hometown banking institution, the underwater structure gets its name from the thicket-like Ivory Tree Coral or Oculina Varicosa. Occurring nowhere else in the world, these unique coral heads grow as much as 65 feet off the ocean floor. Throughout the 1970’s these enormous coral heads supported a wealth of marine life providing a habitat to over 700 species of fish and 300 species of mollusks and crustaceans. But by the 1990’s excessive commercial and recreational fishing had severely damaged the structures and reduced the population, prompting legisla-

tion to protect portions of the reef. Today, thanks to federal protection and the placement of reef balls, marine-friendly concrete structures designed to mimic natural reef systems, many species of commercially significant groupers, amberjacks, snappers and small bass have recolonized the delicate structures. Tips for Shooting the Moon A wide-angle lens will make the moon appear smaller. For shots of the moon alone, go for a 200MM lens or higher.

Use a tripod to accommodate for slower shutter speeds and naturally shaky hands.

Turtle Digs in Vero Beach

n 2005 Indian River County implemented a Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) to help protect and enhance beaches as sea turtle nesting habitats.

With this implementation began the IR Sea Turtle Program and daily county-wide sea turtle nest monitoring. Over 12 years, the county staff has been able to use long-term nesting trends to identify predator issues, beachfront lighting issues, and human impacts along the coast and work with the appropriate entities to improve these issues. In 2016, the county began the Turtle Friendly Business Program (TFB) to help reach the goals described in the HCP. Each of these beachfront businesses have volunteered to follow the City of Vero lighting ordinance to protect adults and hatchling sea turtles, promote local sea turtle activities, provide educational information to guests, and bring their own personality to sea turtle conservation. This program was successful in reducing the number of hatchling disorientations in the City of Vero

Beach last year and has added three new businesses, now totaling 9 TFBs (Vero Beach Hotel and Spa, Holiday Inn Beachside, Ocean Grill, Costa D’ Este, Shark Bait, Bouche Brothers, Reef Ocean Resort, Riomar County Club, and Sea Turtle Realty),in the 2017 program.

During nesting season you can see hundreds of nests marked off with yellow signs, red stakes, and orange ribbon along the beach all representing a small sample (about 10%) of the total nests laid across the county. Three days after each of these marked nests hatch, the contents of the nests are dug up and evaluated. This allows scientists and decision makers to understand how well the beaches are incubating sea turtle nests and if these nests are experiencing any impacts that can be managed more

efficiently. Starting in July, the public is invited to watch nests between Vero Beach Hotel and Costa d’Este be evaluated. This experience is called a Turtle Dig. Guests will received a small presentation about sea turtle biology, threats to their survival, and ways to help protect turtles while standing only a couple feet away from a nest evaluation conducted by the IR Sea Turtle Program staff and volunteers. If any straggler hatchlings are found during the excavation, guests will get to watch them be released into the ocean once the program is complete. Navy SEAL Museum To Begin Renovation of World War II Gallery

T

he Navy SEAL Museum has announced plans to unveil a contemporary World War II Gallery. With renovation plans set to begin this summer, the gallery of all-new artifacts, murals, and interactive displays is anticipated to open early fall of this year.

The World War II Gallery will focus on the foundational history of the predecessors of today’s Navy SEALs and the fundamental need for the establishment of specialized units in an increasingly hostile and changing world. In a detailed timeline, visitors to the new gallery will experience stories from World War II of the crucial operations in which the first Frogmen participated. Artifacts, photographs, and exhibits will provide guests with a greater understanding of and deeper appreciation for the essential role these brave men fulfilled during the Second World War. “The courage and sacrifice of these men, many who trained right here on the beaches in Fort Pierce, helped assure Allied victory during World War II,” said Ruth McSween, Navy SEAL Museum Curator. “This exhibition will explore the contributions to the war effort made by the Scouts & Raiders (S&R), Office of Strategic Services Maritime Units (OSS MU), Naval Combat Demolition Units (NCDU), and Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT). Their deeds and actions set the benchmark against which we measure military special operations today.”

The gallery’s timeline will begin in 1941 with America’s entry into WWII after the attack on Pearl Harbor and travel chronologically to explore the birth of Naval Special Warfare and its evolution, illustrating several naval operations, courageous combatants, and accompanying equipment during this epoch; the timeline will culminate post Iwo Jima with the conclusion of the war in 1945.

Captain Charlie's Fishing Forecast

S

ummer has arrived and you can bet on hot afternoons and lots of great fishing action around the Treasure Coast. The mornings will be calm, and it is certainly to your benefit to get out early to beat the afternoon heat. Being on the water at first light is worth the effort to watch the sun rise. Expect a chance of afternoon thunderstorms each day; we can always use some rain around the area this time of year!

Watch the weather each afternoon out there. It’s a fantastic month to fish.

Inshore will provide lots of redfish, snook and trout action on the flats. Get those top water lures cleaned up and plan an early morning to get some of that explosive action in the shallows.

Try the D.O.A. Airhead or Bait Buster for great top water action. Switch to D.O.A. shrimp or a C.A.L. jerk bait as the sun warms up to continue your success. Watch for bait schools on the flats and you can be assured there are fish nearby. You can expect the fish to be feeding shallow early and move to the edges of the flats as the sun rises.

are traditionally lazy and love to sit in a sand hole and wait for the tide to bring the food for them to ambush.

You should be able to find plenty of redfish around the shallows. The population this year has been outstanding and they have been growing all spring. Redfish schools will be feeding on the flats, so be on the lookout for them. Most will be slot size to just over the slot. I love using a D.O.A. shrimp or C.A.L. paddle tails while fishing for reds. Try along the mangroves as well. Lots of fish will move under the mangroves as the sun heats up for the day. Trout will be on the grassy flats and feeding on the same food out there. Move out to three to five feet of water as the day heats up to continue your action. A Deadly Combo can provide inexperienced anglers with lots of fun learning to fish artificials.

Don’t forget to fish the docks around the river. Lots of big fish will be hanging around many of the docks along the Indian River. Live bait, TerrorEyz and D.O.A. shrimp can find some exciting action. Harbor Branch, Queens Cove and Bear Point will all be hot spots for

Snook will provide plenty of action around the bridges and jetties. Snook season closed on May 31 and won’t open again until fall.

Night anglers will be heading to the jetties for catch and release snook and maybe some tarpon action. Top water lures, feather jigs, TerrorEyz and Bait Busters can all get you in Andy Steinbergs, beautiful trout, Vero on some fantastic action. Handle the snook carefully and release them quickly and safely so that they will be there this fall. Jacks will also be hanging around the inlets and give you some rod bending activity.

Make sure you take plenty of water with you. It will be hot out there. Drink plenty of fluids to keep yourself hydrated and reduce the risk of heat stroke. Slather on lots of sunscreen! Sunburn isn’t a good

It’s Almost Bug Season!

B

ut you won’t need any bug spray, just some diving gear, a few special tools and, of course, melted butter!

We’re talking about Panulirus Argus Pandemonium, better known as Spiny Lobster Mini-Season. This year’s sport season falls on July 26th and 27th. The 48-hour period was established some years ago to allow recreational users to catch lobsters prior to traps being deployed and commercial season beginning on August 6th. Divers call lobsters “bugs” because the crustaceans and insects come from the same phylum, Arthropoda. Shared traits include jointed appendages–legs, antennae and mouthparts–hence the bug reference. But let’s not think about that.

On to the important stuff. During the mini-season divers can take advantage of the 12 per person per day bag limit except in Monroe County and Bis-

cayne National Park where the limit is 6. You will need a fishing license and lobster permit. According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission approximately 13,885 Treasure Coast divers have lobster permits.

Catching these critters isn’t exactly a straightforward deal. These southerners lack the claws of their northern kin so their main defense mechanism is speed.

You’ll need some special equipment to grab them including a tickle stick to coax them toward your net. You’ll also need a measuring device with you always and you cannot bag or remove a lobster from the water without measuring first. The carapace (body not including tail) must be at least 3 inches. Measure it from just behind its eyes to the back center of the body shell where it meets the tail. Learn to identify egg bearing females which are a big no-no to har-

vest. They are said to be "berried" with brightly colored orange eggs carried under the tail. Leave them alone and don’t even think about removing the eggs; it’s illegal and, well, it’s just wrong.

Spiny lobsters hang out in crevices of rocks and coral reefs, occasionally venturing out at night to seek prey. They feed on small, slow-moving mollusks and crustaceans which are typically covered in algae. The color of the algae differs with the depth of the water.

Green algae is more common in shallow waters and therefore lobsters in shallow zones tend to be more of a brownish green. Red algae is more common in deeper water, giving those guys that “already cooked” reddish appearance.

Though more abundant in the Keys, the further north they are the bigger they tend to be due to reduced harvesting pressure. The Treasure Coast offers distinct advantages for div-

ers including bigger lobsters hanging out closer to shore and significantly smaller crowds than the frenzied conditions that have become the norm in the Keys during the short sport season.

In St. Lucie's Pepper Park, there are several nearshore reefs located less than 100 yards off the beach in 20 feet or less water. The reefs of Wabasso Beach also offer a lot of action close to the beach.

The Monster hole in the Sebastian Inlet State Park has also been known to hold big Lobsters. Vero Beach's Jaycee Beach Park also has shore accessible reefs.

Simple and Elegant Steamed Lobster Tail with Lemon Orzo Simmer 1 cup orzo in a saucepan with 2 1/2 cups water, 2 tablespoons olive oil, 1 teaspoon dried mint, 1 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon paprika and 2 strips lemon zest, stirring occasionally, until the orzo is tender, 12 to 15 minutes.

Let cool slightly. Stir in 2 chopped scallions, the juice of 1 lemon, and salt to taste.

Steam lobster tails in shell just until the shell turns red. Remove tails and place over orzo. Garnish with fresh parsley and serve with melted butter.
