Neighbors!
am grateful to be able to reach you through this medium once again. Thank you for your continuous support.
was all about the Haitian Culture in the month of May as we celebrated the sights, sounds and tastes of the island nation at the Haitian Cultural Celebration. Three Miramar students were recognized as the winners of the Haitian Flag Day Student Art Contest! Each of their schools received a $400 check for art supplies, donated by our sponsors, Congresswoman
CherfilusMcCormick and WID the headline act.
was wonderful to host the City of Miramar’s in person Job & Education Fair on May 26th with top companies such as WSVN, Miramar Police, Amazon, Carnival Cruise and many more! The Job fair was a success with folks who reported that they landed a job on the spot!
Oh, what a night it was on May 27th when Stephanie Mills blew us away with hit after hit! The Harden Project was the opening act who prepared us for what was to come! It was great to see patrons from all over dance the night away.
The month of June was recognized as Caribbean American Heritage Month, and I had the pleasure of kicking it off with a media launch showcasing our Caribbean Heritage activities for the month with music and entertainment. We closed out the month with a little Taste of the Caribbean Islands at Vizcaya Park. A fun time was had by all as we incorporated new aspects this year with an art and book fair as well as culinary demos.
I am pleased to have worked alongside the City of Miramar’s Economic Development & Revitalization team, Business Inclusion & Diversity (BID) programs and in partnership with the MiramarPembroke Pines Chamber of Commerce to host the Biz Fit Roadshow and Virtual Workshop 2022. The Biz Fit workshop is designed to
help small businesses start, operate, and expand in Miramar and surrounding areas. The Biz Fit Roadshow offered businesses free information, resources, and incentives available to area businesses.
In association with Anzora’s Foundation, I hosted Gospel Groove Sunday featuring the Stellar Award-nominated Williams Singers from Indianapolis, Indiana, Comedian Natasha Calloway, Psalmist Ernest Gonder and other local artists at the Miramar Cultural Center. This event was created to bring awareness and raise money for mental health. Attendees enjoyed a spectacular spirit-filled show as they supported our vendors and food trucks.
I was honored to have been selected as the Government Official of the year at the People Profile Awards Ceremony held on July 10th, 2022. I will continue to devote my time to public service and advocate for the residents and businesses I serve!
On August 5th, we danced the night away in all Black, Green and Gold at the Jamaica’s 60th Independence Day Fete celebrating 60 glorious years of Independence for Jamaica! It was a pleasure to have Stone Love perform and commemorate their 50th anniversary. During our Fun and Laughter intermissions, four lucky winners received roundtrip Spirit vouchers to any destination of their choosing! In partnership with Grace Foods, we also gave away Grace Food baskets to ten golden winners of our trivia. Attendees whined and dinned with our fantastic vendors who provided food, festivities, and fun. It was “one love” at the Jamaica’s 60th Independence Day Fete, can’t wait for year!

For those of you I have not yet had the pleasure to meet, my name is Lauren Book and I am honored to serve as the Florida State Senator to southwest Broward County. Following redistricting, a Legislative process that occurs every ten years to fit the changing population, I recently won re-election and now proudly represent Miramar and Pembroke Pines. Thank you to Senator Shevrin Jones who previously served these communities.
As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, I know what it feels like to not have a voice. That’s why I have dedicated my life to being an advocate and a voice for those who have not yet found theirs, both in and out of the Legislature. In 2007, I founded Lauren’s Kids, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to preventing childhood sexual abuse and helping survivors heal. Together, we have tightened laws to keep predators away from children and designed an abuse prevention curriculum taught in schools across the country.
In 2016, I was proudly elected to serve Broward County as your State Senator. Since taking office, I have worked to reconstruct Florida’s child abuse reporting system so that no report is left uninvestigated, expanded Medicaid coverage for
new moms and babies, and fought to address the rising cost of living by removing the sales taxes on diapers and lowering the cost of prescription drugs.
In the wake of the horrific tragedy at Marjory Stoneman Douglas, our community came together like never before. Decisive action was needed in Tallahassee to address gun violence in our schools and on our city streets. I worked across the aisle to increase the legal age to buy a gun from 18 to 21 years, banned bump stocks, and established red flag laws that have been used nearly 6,000 times since 2018.
Broward families are facing real issues and we need a leader who will rise above partisan politics to get the work done. I have passed dozens of laws to fund our local schools, keep our community safe, and bring millions of taxpayer dollars back home. With your support I will continue delivering results for Broward.
If you or a loved one need help, from renewing your driver’s license to navigating Florida’s unemployment system, I am here to help.

I am very honored and proud that this issue you are reading is the 25th Edition of Inside Miramar/Pembroke Pines. It has been quite the journey, but it has also been my privilege getting you this Publication 6 times a year with important messages from both Miramar and Pembroke Pines elected officials plus various departments within each City. I enjoy writing my corny little columns each issue and I hope you enjoy them
as well. Obviously, the biggest challenge during the past 4 plus years was navigating a business through the Covid - 19 pandemic. Like many of you, it was a struggle and honestly there was a time that I wondered if I might have to close up shop. Somehow, I was able to get through it and certainly it would not have happened without the support of my unbelievable advertisers. Many could have just walked away during the pandemic but they stuck with my publication as I did my best to get their messages out to all of you during those rough and uncertain times for many business owners.
important to highlight some of the great work and dedication that these business owners provide not only to us but also to their employees.
As many of you are aware, Election Day is on November 8th. I am sure many of you have already voted but I know many of you still like to vote on Election Day, as you cast your vote in person. I am old school and I enjoy going to my local precinct and voting in person. I personally feel it adds to the excitement of the day and then when I get home it is time for the local and national results to be revealed.
It is great to see all of our local winter sports teams up and running. I think our beloved Miami Dolphins will make the playoffs and hopefully once they are in, can win a game or two. The Miami Heat should have another solid season and I am expecting a huge year again from the Florida Panthers.
I think they will advance to the Stanley Cup Finals and possibly win the Championship this year. My fingers are crossed.
Before we know it, school will be out and summer will be here. Enjoy the spring and Mother’s Day feel to this issue of Inside Miramar in the city you call home.
I am extremely excited about this issue and the ones to follow. You will see a new column by our newly elected State Senator Lauren Book. Whether you are a Democrat or Republican, it is important to stay engaged with our local elected officials and reach out to them if you feel the need to do so. There are many more business features in this issue, as I believe it is
on the great things happening in Camps you will find in this issue.
Please continue supporting the local businesses that advertise in my magazine. Use the coupons proved to save money or scan the QR Codes to get more information on the selected businesses. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving; enjoy the time with your family in the two cities you call home.
Sincerely, Chris Koval President/PublisherIf you’ve lived through a hurricane as a homeowner in Florida, you know that most of the preparation needs to be done before your home is in the “cone of concern.” However, there are some important steps that all homeowners should take when it’s apparent that their home is in the path of the storm.
Print a copy of your homeowner insurance policy and keep it in a safe, dry place. You may even want to place a copy of it in a sealed plastic bag, along with other important documents. Check your insurance carrier’s website, as you may be able to download a copy of your policy directly to your smartphone.
You should be familiar with what your policy covers. Make sure you have windstorm/hurricane coverage. Check to see if you have flood insurance, which is usually a separate policy. Rising waters and flooding is usually covered under your flood policy, not the windstorm/hurricane policy. If you don’t have these coverages, unfortunately it will be too late to purchase them for an approaching storm because insurance companies do not sell policies until the immediate threat of a storm has passed.
Take pictures and video of the interior and exterior of your home before and after it is secured, including all valuables, like furniture, clothing, jewelry, electronics, etc. This is an easy way to document the condition of your property before and after the storm. It’s also a way to document the various steps you may have taken to protect your home from storm damage. Your homeowner’s insurance policy requires you to take all steps necessary to minimize the damage to your home.
Speak to an experienced, insurance lawyer to help you navigate your insurance claim. Filing an insurance claim can be confusing and intimidating, so it’s best to consult an attorney with the right experience so that you don’t make mistakes with your claim that could jeopardize your ability to secure insurance coverage for the damages to your home.
Following these simple steps will help you with your insurance claim in the event your home and contents have been damaged during a Hurricane, or any other storm. Insurance companies may undervalue or deny your claim. You should not accept any settlement offer without speaking to a qualified lawyer.

Selling your home is a major decision and for some, a once in a lifetime event. You want to make sure you are setting yourself up to get the most out of your home price wise. Here are nine simple tasks that can set you apart from neighboring properties and increase your property value.
6. UPGRADE CABINETRY. A relatively inexpensive upgrade can be your kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Many homes have outdated or worn cabinets. Replacing the doors and hardware on the cabinets can provide a quick an inexpensive face lift to the kitchen and bathrooms throughout the house.
1. PERFORM A DEEP CLEANING. Whether you are still living in the home or have already moved out, a deep cleaning will help you put your property stand out. More than just sweeping or vacuuming, this is an intense cleaning aimed at making the home spotless. You want to really get in and scrub the toilets and showers, wash the carpets, steam of the curtains, clean everything from the floors to the ceiling. If you’ve done a good enough job, you’ll end up considering moving back in.
2. WASH THE WINDOWS. More than just a simple wipe down, wash the windows – inside and out. Be sure to not only clean the windows but also the frames which often collect bugs, dust, and dirt. When cleaning the windows, try not to leave streaks from the cleaning products. When showing the property, you’ll want the windows open to allow plenty of light in. Showcasing a clean window not only allows for better natural lighting but also gives the potential buyer a great view of what they’ll be waking up to when they buy the home.
3. CLEAR THE CLUTTER. This is one of the most difficult tasks for homeowners, especially with kids living in the home. By clearing out the clutter, you’re showcasing the space available and allowing the potential buyer to visualize their furniture and belongings in the space. Too much clutter, including large furniture pieces can make the space look smaller. Consider moving large bulky items into the garage or a temporary storage.
4. MINIMIZE PET ITEMS. Many homeowners consider their pets part of their family and allow them free reign in the home. However, some buyers may not be as pet friendly or could potentially have pet allergies. During a showing, it is recommended to hide away the pet toys, feeing bowls, etc. and consider using air fresheners such as Febreze or scented plug-ins throughout the home to mask the pet odors.
5. APPLY A FRESH COAT OF PAINT.
Painting the home may be a great way to add appeal. With normal wear, paint can get scuffed, chipped, and faded. Applying a fresh coat of paint can help you sell the property faster. Be careful not to pick bright, vibrant colors for interior walls. Using a neutral color palate will better showcase the space and allow the potential buyers to start with a clean canvas and decorate to their liking.
7. ADD A CONTEMPORARY BACKSPLASH. Older homes don’t typically have kitchen backsplashes. Consider adding one throughout your kitchen when sprucing up the place. Local hardware stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s carry an assortment of tiles that can easily be installed. You can hire a handyman or check out a few YouTube videos that show you just how easy this task can be done.
8. HIRE A PEST CONTROL SPECIALIST. Living in South Florida, we have more than our fair share of pests that find their way into our homes. From ghost ants to mosquitoes and flies, these Florida natives can make your home their own. Freeing your home of these pests year-round can be a hassle but thankfully we have several companies that take care of this problem for you. As soon as you decide to list your home, call in the specialists to spray the property – inside and outside. This will allow for plenty of time for the home to be pest-free by the time the showings come around.
9. WORK ON YOUR CURB APPEAL. A simple way of increasing your property’s curb appeal is to work on the landscaping. From trimming the hedges to spraying and clearing away the weeds, a neat and tidy lawn and yard can greatly improve your property’s value in the eyes of a potential buyer. Make it a family affair and get the kids or grandkids involved. Mow the lawn and add a splash of color to the home by planting some flowers. It can seem like a lot of work, but it pays off big in the long run.
These are just a few recommendations for sellers to help get the best price for your home.
Realtors will often pull a comparative market analysis that will show similar properties in the area that have sold within the last three to six months. The CMA will include photos of those properties in addition to basic descriptions and the actual price the home sold for. By improving the appearance of your home, you the seller, can justify the increase in asking price as compared to the properties that sold in recent months.

In a fire, mere seconds can mean the difference between a safe escape and a tragedy. Today’s homes burn faster than ever. You may have as little as two minutes (or even less time) to safely escape a home fire from the time the smoke alarm sounds. Your ability to get out of a home during a fire depends on early warning from smoke alarms and advance planning. Fire safety education isn’t just for school children. Teenagers, adults, and the elderly are also at risk in fires, making it important for every member of the community to take some time every October during Fire Prevention Week to make sure they understand how to stay safe in case of a fire. This year’s campaign, “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape™, works to educate everyone about simple but important actions they can take to keep themselves and those around them safe from home fires.
It is important for everyone to plan and practice a home fire escape. Everyone needs to be prepared in advance, so that they know what to do when the smoke alarm sounds. Given that every home is different, every home fire escape plan will also be different. Have a plan for everyone in the home. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Make sure that someone will help them!
Smoke alarms sense smoke well before you can, alerting you to danger. Smoke alarms need to be in every bedroom, outside of the sleeping areas (like a hallway), and on each level (including the basement) of your home. Do not put smoke alarms in your kitchen or bathrooms. Choose an alarm that is listed with a testing laboratory, meaning it has met certain standards for protection. For the best protection, use combination smoke and carbon monoxide alarms that are interconnected throughout the home. These can be installed by
a qualified electrician, so that when one sounds, they all sound. This ensures you can hear the alarm no matter where in your home the alarm originates.
BONUS IN THIS ISSUE: Top 10 safety tips for a safe Thanksgiving For most, the kitchen is the heart of the home, especially during the holidays. From testing family recipes to decorating cakes and cookies, everyone enjoys being part of the preparations.
So keeping fire safety top of mind in the kitchen during this joyous but hectic time is important, especially when there’s a lot of activity and people at home. As you start preparing your holiday schedule and organizing that large family feast, remember, by following a few simple safety tips you can enjoy time with your loved ones and keep yourself and your family safer from fire.
• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove top so you can keep an eye on the food.
• Stay in the home when cooking your turkey, and check on it frequently.
• Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay three feet away.
• Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns.
• Keep knives out of the reach of children.
• Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child.
• Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet.
• Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.
• Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags.
• Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button.
Polo Norte Restaurants which announced the 30th Anniversary celebration of its authentic, familyowned Cuban restaurants, which started as an ice-cream parlor in 1992 and now counts with 6 South Florida restaurant locations including one in Miramar, Hialeah, Palm Springs North, Kendall, Flagler, and Coral Way.
Polo Norte Restaurants is a chain of 6 family owned and operated Cuban restaurants in the South Florida area founded in 1992 by the Busquet family. What makes Polo Norte restaurants different from other local Cuban eateries in the area is that although they also serve the traditional Cuban dishes, they have unique signature dishes such as the “Bistec Uruguayo”, serves Cuban Pizza with exotic island flavors such as Guayaba and Cheese Pizza and Plantain Pizza and is also known for its ice-creams in Caribbean fruit flavors such as Mamey and Guayaba.
Like thousands of other Cuban families in the early 80’s, with the help of relatives already living in exile, the Busquet family left the island on the Mariel Boat Lift. They had nothing more than each other, a will to make it and to follow their dreams. After years of hard work and sacrifice, they opened the original Polo Norte in 1992, as an ice cream parlor. However, Hurricane Andrew hit it only three
days after it opened. With untiring determination, the Busquet family picked up the pieces, and re-opened Polo Norte but this time with an expanded menu, which included “Pizza Cubana” (Cuban Pizza) along with other Cuban dishes as well as their trademark Caribbean fruit flavored Cuban Ice-cream. Shortly after, Polo Norte’s reputation as “the place to go” for a truly authentic Cuban meal, became widespread. Today, Polo Norte has flourished into six successful restaurants, still family owned, and operated restaurants run by the same principles, work ethic and genuine “Cuban” hospitality that started it all.
Founder Raul Busquet remarked” When I think back about everything we went through including losing everything during Hurricane Andrew, I can say that the only thing that got us through this was having each other, our dreams of making it here, and sheer hard work and determination. If there ever was a formula to achieve the American dream, I would say, that is it. But it does take a team and my family was my rock! I am very grateful for the opportunity this country has provided me with. I am living proof that the American dream exists!”

We have some extraordinary residents in the City of Pembroke Pines. That’s why I look forward to Extra Mile Day, which is celebrated every year on November 1st to recognize individuals and organizations who are “going the extra mile” to support local community events and services. Each year our City participates in this effort and will continue to do so with a proclamation that
will be presented at a Commission Meeting in November. At this meeting, several Extra Mile Heroes also will be recognized including Elvin (Junior) Matos; Kettly Nicoleau; and Joan Horvath, all of whom have helped as volunteers at the Carl Shechter Southwest Focal Point Community Center.
I’m also very proud of our Pembroke Pines Fire Department for introducing an Autism Awareness Decal Program for the city. This program is geared towards alerting First Responders that there is a person with Autism in the vehicle that may not speak, respond to, or comply with verbal commands, may hide or wander off, or may have no awareness of danger. The more information First Responders have when they respond to calls for service, the better they can meet resident’s needs.
The Pembroke Pines Fire Department is providing these decals free of charge to anyone in the City of Pembroke Pines who wants to place them on the side or rear window of their vehicles.
If you wish to receive a decal, please contact the Fire Prevention Bureau at 954-499-9560. If you do not wish to receive a decal but would like to register a family member to the City’s Special needs registry, please visit https://flpembrokepines.civicplus.com/1372/Special-Needs-Registry
