Smooth, round or oval rocks, washed and dried Acrylic craft paint in colours of our choice Black acrylic craft paint 2 wiggle eyes for each ladybug Black Sharpie marker Acrylic matte sealer spray White craft glue (Tacky Glue)

How to make it: 1. Completely wash and dry all rocks.

2. Paint rocks in desired colours, allow to dry.

Apply second and third coats if needed.

Lighter colours will require more coats than darker shades.

3. Paint head on using black acrylic craft paint.

There is no pattern needed, simply paint about 1/4 of the rock black in the "front".

4. Use a black Sharpie to draw a straight line down the centre of the rock, starting at the centre of the base of the "head".

5. Dip the end of a large paint brush, or the eraser of a pencil, in black craft paint. Dot on the spots, reloading with paint after every dot.

6. Once the paint is dry, spray the rock(s) with acrylic sealer spray. Allow sealer to dry completely.

7. Using white craft glue, attach wiggle eyes and let dry.

Helpful Hints: * If you are doing this in a group setting, you may find it easier to prepare the rocks ahead of time. Wash, dry and apply a coat of Liquitex Basics Gesso (white) to each rock. This is a craft medium that works well with many projects. It will also create a base so that less coats of colour paint will be required. * Bigger rocks are easier for small hands to manipulate. They are also heavier, so be sure that there are enough adult helpers for a group of little ones. * White and black paint can be used instead of wiggle eyes. Simply dot on white paint, allow to dry, then use a smaller tool to dot on the black.

Holiday Review May Party like a local in marvelous Rio de Janeiro by Sarah Benton Rio is famous for its beaches, its beautiful people and its nightlife. If you want to party, you've come to the right place When I think of Rio, the first three things that pop into my head are: the huge statue of Christ, Cristo Redentor, on top of Corcovado Mountain; beautiful tanned people on long stretches of sandy beach; and sipping caipirinhas whilst dancing to loud, rhythmic music late into the night.

Brazil’s marvelous city is a place that really gets under your skin. The poverty is overwhelming and overflows from the favelas onto the city streets. It is matched only by the exuberant wealth of Rio’s high-society, but despite this, I ended up loving the place. From the winding alleys and street art of Santa Teresa and the shabby-chic beauty of the historic buildings in Centro to the long sandy beach of Ipanema, there is something for everybody. But what drew me back a few years ago was the nightlife. The Cariocas (Rio locals), really know how to party.

Music ranges from modern dance tracks, drum ‘ ‘n’ bass and hip hop to more traditional styles like the samba and choro.

Things don’t normally kick off until around midnight, and go on until five or six in the morning, so don’t start drinking too early. My two favourite drinks were caipirinhas, a rather potent mix of lime, crushed ice, sugar and cachaca (sugar-cane rum), and mojitos, made from lime, mint, soda, ice and dark rum. Bear in mind that drinking local alcohol is much cheaper than drinking imported brands.

There are several different areas to party in Rio. It is a sprawling city, so unless you want to spend half the night in taxis, stuck in traffic trying to get from one side of the city to the other, pick an area and stay there for the whole night.

You can drink pretty much anywhere in Rio, and most locals drink with friends on balconies, parks or the beach before a night out. Cafes are also a popular place to

warm up, as the booze is cheaper and you can munch your way through various snacks to give you some energy for the evening’s activities. I can’t name all of these; all I can say is don’t be put off by plastic picnic tables and chairs - if you see a bunch of locals seated at one of these places, then chances are it’s a good place to pull up a pew.

To mingle with the beautiful and most wealthy people of Rio, make a beeline for Ipanema and Leblon. Popular clubs/lounge bars are Baronetti (354 Rua Barão da Torre) and Melt (Rua Rita Ludolf ), but be warned that these aren’t cheap.

Partying here is similar, in terms of price, to London or New York and don’t expect to get in with your Havaianas (the famous local flip-flops) on. Also note that these clubs often charge a cover charge and will issue you with a card as you arrive. Your drinks will then be charged to this, and if you don’t buy enough you have to pay a forfeit charge!

Copacobana is probably Rio’s most famous district but its club scene has faded from glory in recent years. It is now frequented by prostitutes and drug dealers after dark.

However, there is still one club that remains popular: Bunker (Rua Raul Pompeia 7). The music here varies from week to week and the crowd is a mix of backpackers and locals, so it has a friendly, relaxed feel and it’s easy to make new friends with the Cariocas.

When I was there, Lapa was the best party hotspot. This bohemian district has a unique sense of style and culture, which oozes out into its music scene. You’ll hear traditional samba beats mixed in with drum'n'bass and electro music that is so catchy even your granny will want to get up and dance. My favourite spots were Rio Scenarium (Rua do Lavradio) and Carioca de Gema (Rua Mem de Sa 79).

Scenarium is large and lavishly decorated, whilst Carioca de Gema is a smaller, more intimate affair but it still knows how to pump up the volume.

To get into the groove of old-time Rio, head to the many gafieiras, samba halls that fill the Centro area.

Estudantina (Praça Tiradentes 79) and Passeio Publico Café(Av Rio Branco 277) are two of the best places to learn some new steps or watch the Cariocas strut their stuff.

Of course, Carnival is one of the craziest and most exciting times to visit Rio. It is pretty much one long party and everyone is in high-spirits and good natured, but be prepared to book well in advance for accommodation, to pay extra for everything and for every nook and cranny of the place to be full to the brim with revellers. But, believe me, it is worth it.

Where to stay Promenade Visconti: this apart-hotel is located in Ipanema so perfect for getting home after a night out in Melt or Baronetti or a day on the beach. If you are staying for a few nights it is worth getting the suite (actually a small apartment). Fantastic views from most of the rooms make this a perfect choice for enjoying an evening aperitif on the balcony. Double rooms are around £100 per room, per night. December figures showed valuations for first-time buyers increased by 26% year-on-year while activity for those selling property rose 25% over the same period.

Remortgage activity was up 19% but buy-to-let fell 26%, showing the impact of the Stamp Duty rush earlier in the year. This contributed to overall activity increasing 8% year-on-year in December.

However, compared to 2014, overall activity is up 40%, according to the figures.

The volume of property sellers is up 32% on two years ago and activity in the first time buyer segment is up 50%.

Remortgage activity is up 68% while activity in the buy-to-let segment is up 13% on December 2014.

Want something special for Sunday lunch? marinated lamb is full of flavour and perfect with salsa verde.

Trim any excess skin from the lamb and score the fat using a sharp knife.

Put the garlic, lemon zest (reserve the juice for the salsa verde), honey and oil in a large bowl and mix. Add the lamb and rub in the marinade. Cover and leave to marinate for at least 30 minutes.

Preheat the oven to 220C/200C Fan/Gas 7

Place a large frying pan over a medium heat, put the lamb fat-side down into the pan and fry for about 5 minutes or until the fat is dark golden-brown.

Transfer to a roasting tin, browned side up and bones facing the centre.

Roast for 18–20 minutes, cover with aluminium foil and rest for 15 minutes.

For the salsa verde, mix all the ingredients and the reserved lemon juice together in a bowl and season with little salt and pepper. Gently warm the salsa before serving.

The salsa can be made up to 3 days ahead, in fact the flavours increase the longer it is left.

Carve the lamb to divide it into chops.

Serve two chops per person with the salsa verde alongside.

Lincolnshire’s oldest resident, Violet Davies-Evans, celebrates 109th Birthday at Ashwood Nursing & Care Home Violet Davies-Evans celebrated her 109 birthday at Ashwood Nursing & Care Home today in Spalding, Lincolnshire. Violet, Lincolnshire’s oldest resident woke up bright and early at 7.30am, keen to get her celebrations underway, she started her day with her favourite bowl of porridge and hot cup of tea.

Staff and residents at the nursing home were joined by Country Court Care Chairman, Abdul Kachra, to celebrate the milestone birthday. Mr Kachra presented Violet with a beautiful orchid and congratulated her on her remarkable achievement.

Violet was also presented with a chocolate birthday cake and staff and residents joined to sing her Happy Birthday, she did a fantastic job of blowing out her candles too! As she tucked into her cake she commented to staff that it was “Delicious” and “full of sugar!” Always one for elegant clothes, Violet was dressed in a new outfit sent especially for her birthday by her nephew. Violet was overjoyed to have so many staff keen to wish her a happy birthday. She was joined later in the day by members of her family who had travelled to spend the day with her. Born in Sutterton in 1908, the third child of what was to be a family of four sisters and a brother, Violet DaviesEvans• was brought up in Spalding. After leaving school she started work at Pennington’s before moving to Birmingham as a beautician at Marshall and Snelgroves. In the thirties she moved to London to work for Elizabeth Arden as a beauty specialist advising many influential clients on how to make the best of themselves. Violet was married to Hubert in 1938 and, though they would have liked to have a family that was not to be. At the outbreak of war Elizabeth Arden, herself, offered her a job in America but she chose to stay in London. As well as her day job working as a PA to Christopher Hinton, (Baron Hinton of Bankside) in the Ministry of Supply she was regularly to be found fire-watching on the roofs of the capital. After the war Violet, her husband and two dogs moved to Oxfordshire where he became the very charismatic head of a school in a large hospital.

They enjoyed a busy social life entertaining friends and she was able to demonstrate her wide range of cooking skills as well as the love her of antiques, painting and tapestry work. Sadly, soon after his retirement in 1975, her husband died and, having too large a property to look after on her own, she moved back to Lincolnshire, sharing a house in Osbournby th

with her also widowed sister, May, and getting fully involved in village life including the WI. After the death of her sister she moved back to Spalding where she has lived independently until 2014 when she decided that she needed more care and moved into Ashwood Nursing and Care Home.

How can I help my pup to settle?

Puppy Diaries Dear readers welcome to the second installment of pets corner. This month we look at ways of settling in your new puppy.

I hope these tips are proving useful to you.

Bringing home a new puppy is exciting for you but can be daunting for the dog. There is lots you can do to help your puppy settle into his new home. If you've got a puppy and he is very boisterous, then check out How can I help my puppy to calm down?

Ideally a pup should leave his mother at seven to ten weeks old, so he has had time to learn about other dogs but is still young enough for positive early experiences with humans to really count. The first few days are vital.

Before you bring your puppy home — Remember your pup is likely to feel he has been snatched away from his home. Help make the transition easier for him by leaving an old T- shirt you have worn with the breeder on your last visit before collection. With this placed in the litter's bed it will make your scent familiar to him as well as absorbing the scent of his family. When you bring your pup home, collect the T-shirt and put it in his travel basket and then his den. It will comfort him as he adapts to his new environment.

Collecting my puppy — Try to collect your pup early so he has the whole day to get used to his surroundings before settling for the night. Take time off work if necessary so your pup is not left alone for at least a few days. Control how and when any children play with him and give him time to explore alone but supervised.

Bringing home a puppy — As soon as you arrive home, take the puppy into the garden and reward him as soon as he's been to the toilet. This will set the tone of positive reinforcement and let your

puppy see how they should behave. Allow the puppy freedom to explore his new surroundings, but pay close attention to where he goes. It's a good idea to follow them with some treats to keep their attention focused when you need it to be.

A Puppy's First Day Start by taking him into the garden to the spot where you want him to toilet. Hopefully, he will oblige and be less inclined to mess in the house.

When you go indoors try to keep things calm and warn any children they shouldn't expect to play with the puppy the moment he arrives.

Introduce him to the room where he is to spend most of his time, and his bed, and spend some time quietly getting to know him.

Then leave him alone for a nap.

A Puppy's First Night Some puppies settle straight to sleep but many cry during their first night in a strange place, in which case it may be kinder to allow them to sleep near you to begin with. Try to make the process of teaching your puppy to sleep alone a gradual one.

Let him sleep in a puppy crate near your bed; if he wakes, speak reassuringly but don't touch him.

He should begin to sleep through when he realizes he won't be petted or played with.

Gradually move the crate from your bed to the room you want him to sleep in. Do this instages: say to the bedroom door, the landing, down the stairs and so on. The patterns set in the first few weeks of a new routine can set the tone for good, or at least become very hard to break.

A Puppy's First Week

Don't make any changes to his diet until he has settled in; then do so gradually.

Enrol in reward-based training classes. Ask your vet or other owners for recommendations.

Give your puppy every chance to become a happy member of the household.

Draw up a rota so every family member has time with the puppy and some responsibility for him.

MOTORING REVIEW Audi RS3 Sportback (2017) Pinch yourself – you now live in the same world as a 400-horsepower production hatchback. The sort of exotic output once reserved for multi-cylinder monsters is now available in the Audi RS3.

This power hike is part of a wider refresh; more tech, less weight, better fuel economy, sharper dynamics and a plusher ride for Audi’s mega-hatch.

Most importantly though, the RS3 is once again more powerful than its arch-rival Mercedes-AMG A45.

Was the previous RS3 a slow car?

Not exactly, but the 2.5-litre turbocharged five-pot borrowed from the TT RS means a 0.2 second improvement from 0-62mph, knocking a tenth off the aforementioned Merc. It is still almost half a second behind its supercar-shaming coupe engine donor the price of usable back seats and a capacious boot.

Activate launch control by setting the ESC and gearbox to Sport and the RS3 feels brutally fast off the line, although not quite as terrifying as its 4.1 seconds to 62 suggests, due to its predictable and linear power delivery.

There’s no redline rush but the torque band is appreciably wide, providing 354lb ft between 1700rpm and 5850rpm, above which it develops peak power of 395bhp (it’s only 400hp if you reference cheeky European horses) up to a distinctly un-turbo-like 7,000rpm. Sounds fantastic, too.

It’s mad to think this frankly bonkers performance is A) available in a family hatchback and B) represents the entry point to RS ownership. This car is barely 20bhp down on 2005’s V8 powered RS4 and its fabulous engine.

Snore. Go back to the improved dynamics A rather sore point for the old car this – particularly when the Drift-Mode-enabled Ford Focus RS came along with the ability to make you laugh like an idiot behind the wheel at a significantly lower asking price.

This face lifted RS3 Sportback wades in with a notinsignificant front-end weight reduction of 26kg (thanks to its aluminium block and oil pump, lightweight crankshaft and pulleys, plus magnesium oil pan) bringing with it sharper turn-in and better agility.

Other handling improvements have largely centred around the tuning of the Quattro all-wheel drive system and its multi-plate clutch. This can send between 50100% of the engine’s torque to the rear, dictated by your driving style and whether you’ve got the Audi drive select system in Sport or not.

Does it do massive powerslides now?

While these improvements don’t translate into lurid, artificial-feeling Dagenham oversteer, on the tight switchbacks of the RS3’s Oman-based launch we found the rear axle to be quite mobile indeed, albeit if provoked with a late brake and flat-footed throttle application.

The back end stepped out progressively even with full traction control activated, but set the car to its special half-off Sport ESC mode and the RS3 gives you freer reign to express yourself before nipping one of the brake callipers to pull everything back into line with a bit of post-drift lag while the Quattro system divvies up the power.

It’s worth pointing out the roads were coated in a fine dusting of talcum-like sand and felt noticeably less grippy than UK tarmac, so it’ll be interesting to see how it fares here.

At its heart though the RS3 follows tradition with massive, trustworthy traction levels and a tendency for the front end to push wide in slow corners - it makes nearly 400bhp on a short wheelbase feel quite benign and usable, which is remarkable when you think about it. And at the end of the day, isn’t that exactly what an Audi RS car is for?

MOTORING Anything else new?

Essentially this facelift brings the RS3 in line with the recently updated A3 so you now get LED headlights (with optional Matrix upgrade) and the 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit digital instrument panel with configurable displays.

The suspension is 25mm lower than the A3 and there’s a 20mm wider front track plus the usual RS styling upgrades – honeycomb grille, ‘quattro’ front bumper logo, larger air intakes, flared wheel arches and massive oval tailpipes.

Carbon ceramic front brakes are an option, as is the wider-ranging magnetic adaptive damping system, more supportive RS bucket seats and the 'Audi phone box'with its wireless charging pad.

The biggest headline, however, is the launch of the RS3 Saloon – the first time Audi has fitted a transverse five-cylinder unit into such a body style.

Proportionally it looks like an older, more compact A4 and presents a tempting four-door AWD rival to BMW’s M2.

Verdict Pricing for the new RS3 isn’t confirmed yet but we expect it to be around £45,000 for the Sportback.

Go a bit options-mad with magnetic ride, carbon ceramics and a sports exhaust and you’ll find yourself with a mid £50k hatchback in no time flat.

Make no mistake; that is a serious amount of wonga in anyone’s book, not helped by the fact that the spectrum of practical to entertaining hot hatches has been sewn up by the VW Golf R and Ford Focus RS, both of which are slower but have a starting price beginning with a three.

That said, with easy-access PCP finance the RS3’s bottom line is perhaps as relevant in the real world as the Blue Oval’s drift mode. Your move, AMG.

Cooke and Connell Fundraiser's help holidays for heroes charity Lincoln Fundraiser's Joe Cooke MBE and Frank Connell have been raising funds for charities and causes for over thirty five years.

They have helped, and continue helping and supporting many local charity causes Joe and Frank, together with local businessman Glen Ford, decided they would like to help when they heard of Dawn and Richard Woodhouse’s work to provide holidays on the island of Jersey for injured military personnel and their families. Their Charity has been operating for eight years and over 2,000 holidays have been arranged so far. The people of Jersey are very generous and help raise funds. Dawn has been made an MBE for her services to injured members of the Armed Forces.
