HISTORY OF THE OLYMPICS THE ORIGINS The Olympic Games, which originated in ancient Greece as many as 3,000 years ago, were revived in the late 19th century and have become the world’s preeminent sporting competition. From the 8th century B.C. to the 4th century A.D., the Games were held every four years in Olympia, located in the western Peloponnese peninsula, in honor of the god Zeus.

The fi rst modern Olympics took place in 1896 in Athens, and featured 280 participants from 13 nations, competing in 43 events. Since 1994, the Summer and Winter Olympic Games have been held separately and have alternated every two years. The Olympics in Ancient Greece The fi rst written records of the ancient Olympic Games date to 776 B.C., when a cook named Coroebus won the only event–a 192-meter footrace called the stade (the origin of the modern “stadium”)– to become the fi rst Olympic champion. However, it is generally believed that the Games had been going on for many years by that time.

which were known as Olympiads. The 1896 Games featured the fi rst Olympic marathon, which followed the 25-mile route run by the Greek soldier who brought news of a victory over the Persians from Marathon to Athens in 490 B.C. Fittingly, Greece’s Spyridon Louis won the fi rst gold medal in the event.

In 1924, the distance would be standardized to 26 miles and 385 yards. After 13 Olympiads, two more races joined the stade as Olympic events: the diaulos (roughly equal to today’s 400- meter race), and the dolichos (a longer-distance race, possibly comparable to the 1,500-meter or 5,000-meter event). The pentathlon (consisting of fi ve events: a foot race, a long jump, discus and javelin throws and a wrestling match) was introduced in 708 B.C., boxing in 688 B.C. and chariot racing in 680 B.C. In 648 B.C., pankration, a combination of boxing andwrestling with virtually no rules, debuted as an Olympic event.

Participation in the ancient Olympic Games was initially limited to freeborn male citizens of Greece; there were no women’s events, and married women were prohibited from attending the competition. Decline and Revival of the Olympic Tradition. After the Roman Empire conquered Greece in the mid- 2nd century B.C., the Games continued, but their standards and quality declined. In one notorious example from A.D. 67, the decadent Emperor Nero entered an Olympic chariot race, only to disgrace himself by declaring himself the winner even after he fell off his chariot during the event.

Legend has it that Heracles (the Roman Hercules), son of Zeus and the mortal woman Alcmene, founded the Games, which by the end of the 6th century B.C had become the most famous of all Greek sporting festivals. The ancient Olympics were held every four years between August 6 and September 19 during a religious festival honoring Zeus. The Games were named for their location at Olympia, a sacred site located near the western coast of the Peloponnese peninsula in southern Greece. Their infl uence was so great that ancient historians began to measure time by the four-year increments in between Olympic Games,

In A.D. 393, Emperor Theodosius I, a Christian, called for a ban on all “pagan” festivals, ending the ancient Olympic tradition after nearly 12 centuries. It would be another 1,500 years before the Games would rise again, largely thanks to the efforts of Baron Pierre de Coubertin (1863-1937) of France. Dedicated to the promotion of physical education, the young baron became inspired by the idea of creating a modern Olympic Games after visiting the ancient Olympic site.

In November 1892, at a meeting of the Union des Sports Athlétiques in Paris, Coubertin proposed the idea of reviving the Olympics as an international athletic competition held every four years. Two years later, he got the approval he needed to found the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which would become the governing body of the modern Olympic Games. The Olympics Through the Years.

The fi rst modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece, in 1896. In the opening ceremony, King Georgios I and a crowd of 60,000 spectators welcomed 280 participants from 13 nations (all male), who would compete in 43 events, including track and fi eld, gymnastics, swimming, wrestling, cycling, tennis, weightlifting, shooting and fencing. All subsequent Olympiads have been numbered even when no Games take place (as in 1916, during World War I, and in 1940 and 1944, during World War II).

The offi cial symbol of the modern Games is fi ve interlocking coloured rings, representing the continents of North and South America, Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. The Olympic fl ag, featuring this symbol on a white background, fl ew for the fi rst time at the Antwerp Games in 1920. The Olympics truly took off as an international sporting event after 1924, when the VIII Games were held in Paris.

Some 3,000 athletes (with more than 100 women among them) from 44 nations competed that year, and for the fi rst time the Games featured a closing ceremony.

The Winter Olympics debuted that year, including such events as fi gure skating, ice hockey, bobsledding and the biathlon. Eighty years later, when the 2004 Summer Olympics returned to Athens for the fi rst time in more than a century, nearly 11,000 athletes from a record 201 countries competed. In a gesture that joined both ancient and modern Olympic traditions, the shot put competition that year was held at the site of the classical Games in Olympia.

Blackberry-BBQ Chicken Dinner Whip up our Blackberry-BBQ Chicken EntrĂŠe and enjoy with the family.

This recipe calls for three dishes that include chicken, potatoes and salad!

What You Need

Method 1

Heat grill to medium heat.

Blend blackberries in blender until smooth. Pour through fine-mesh strainer into medium bowl; discard strained seeds.

Add barbecue sauce to strained berries; mix well.

Reserve half the barbecue sauce mixture for later use. Grill chicken 8 to 10 min. on each side or until done (165ÂşF), brushing with remaining barbecue sauce mixture for the last 5 min.

Meanwhile, spread TATER TOTS into single layer on bottom of disposable shallow foil pan sprayed with cooking spray.

Place on grill grate next to chicken. Grill 10 min. or until TATER TOTS are heated through and golden brown, stirring occasionally.

Why go?

Brisbane started life as a penal settlement in 1824, but there are precious few traces of that history left today.

A few sandstone convict-built structures remain but the city’s architecture is best known for the timber houses called “Queenslanders”, with wide verandahs designed to catch the breezes, and its gleaming offi ce towers.

This inland city wraps itself around the wide brown Brisbane River, and I love nothing better than riding the sleek CityCat ferries the length of it. In summer, Brisbane blazes with purple jacaranda, scarlet poinciana and fragrant frangipani trees, and in winter the tourists still wear shorts and t-shirts even while the locals rug up against temperatures that might fall just below 20 degrees Celsius.

Time permitting, you can drive the 1,700-odd km from Brisbane to Cairns, with access to the Great Barrier Reef from several towns along the northern half of the Queensland coastline. Driving takes about 20

hours, so most people choose to fl y for two instead.

Wildlife abounds, with plenty of places to see koalas, kangaroos, emus, crocodiles and other unique Australian species, even in the cities. And the beaches – north and south of Brisbane and right along the coastal strip – are uncrowded and clean.

When to go?

Brisbane is warm and tropical all year round, but summer humidity can get too much for some visitors between December and February. The other seasons are milder and less sticky, and I think there’s no more perfect time to visit than in September, at the start of spring. The Great Barrier Reef lures most people between mid-April and mid-August. Cairns is warm in winter, and hot and sultry – and often very wet, with the chance of cyclones – in summer (December to February). Remember that the further north you travel, the warmer it will get.

Australian schools take 6-8 weeks off over December to January, when hotel rates soar and occupancy is at its highest. You’re also likely to strike queues at major attractions at this time of year.

Tipping: Australians tip only occasionally, and then fairly little. For taxis, it’s enough just to round the fare up to up to the nearest A$1 or A$5, depending on how helpful the driver has been. In restaurants, 10 per cent is the norm if the service is notably good. In bars, it’s not expected to leave anything more than a bit of loose change.

Queensland’s dress code is fairly casual at all times, but you’ll need proper shoes and a shirt with sleeves (for men) as a minimum in most bars and restaurants

2016 FERRARGTC4LUSSO As close as you will get to a Ferrari SUV

The new Ferrari GTC4Lusso, thought to be one of those old-school, more-power-than-handling Sixties beauties, before clanging back to earth like a prancing horse into a ha-ha. Under new capo-di-capo, Sergio Marchionne, only the names have changed and the GTC4Lusso is basically a facelifted FF, where 4 refers to the number of seats, apparently.

FF? Remind yourself, In 2011, this was Ferrari’s attempt to get a slide on the even-then burgeoning SUV market with a shooting brake. The derivatives of this body style are disputed, but while they can be utterly gorgeous cars, they aren’t easy to get right.

For every Drogo/Bizzarrini Ferrari 250GTO Bread Van racer, Harold-Radford Aston Martin DB5 shooting brake, Reliant Scimitar GTE, Volvo 1800ES, Lancia HPE or Jensen FF, there are countless unhappy specials done for various sultans and potentates.

And who wants to remember the Vauxhall Signum?

Ferrari claims to have sold almost 6,000, with Britain taking its typical 10 to 12 per cent, though in spite of claims that the cars are driven farther and more often than typical Ferraris.

You should never say never in the motor industry, but Sergio Marchionne has said that Ferrari will not build an SUV. “This is as near to an SUV as Ferrari will do,” said one insider, although this facelifted car gives Ferrari another fi ve years of development and watching time if it chooses the contrary. Based on the same aluminium alloy spaceframe, the new GTC4’s shape is recognisably similar to the FF’s, but it’s set is more forward, with wind-cheating scallops in the lower doors and a defi ant roof spoiler to improve aerodynamics.

Sitting on stark fi ve­spoke alloys, it looks sharp, curvaceous and purposeful, but those huge wing vents are almost caricature-like. Is there too much bonnet?

Possibly and a few inches stolen off the front might have given more balance as well as freeing up a bit of

boot space, which remains the same at 450 litres with the rear seats up, 800 with them folded.

With slightly more leg room thanks to heavily scalloped front-seat backs and a full six footer can sit comfortably, if snugly in the back. Despite, all this, however (and here’s the rub), the rear suspension takes up a lot of boot space and as a result you’ll fi t guns, cartridges, weather gear and a couple of pairs of gum boots, but the dog will have to travel separately.

The cabin is deceptively simple, with each feature standing out like an island in a sea of stitched leather.

Most noticeable is a huge new touchscreen, which sits like a small telly in the centre of the dash with switch panels for it and the heating, almost hung off the dash below. The rest of the centre console is mainly storage, which is practical, but forces a lot of responsibility on to the individual switches, which can appear overly complex. The New Delphi-supplied in-car entertainment is good, with clear graphics and a logical control sequence, but there’s no WiFi connectivity, which is rapidly becoming de rigueur and our satnav malfunctioned, twice.
