bollington, prestbury & t y t h e r i n g to n In the competitive world of magazine publishing and advertising sales I’m often asked what makes our magazines stand out from the crowd.

I had a great chance to reflect on this recently when I met up with several other publishers who are producing similar magazines but who are far enough away geographically not to be competing for the same business. I was taken aback to hear that some fill as much as 80% of their pages with adverts and have little or no readable editorial – a very different approach to ours!

Without the adverts there would be no INSIDE Magazines but we’ve always believed that, if we provide lots of interesting content too, it means that you’re more likely to keep your magazine. Hopefully you also refer to it when you’re looking for a local business or service so everybody benefits.

I hope you agree that our approach of quality content and great advertising is the right one because I think that’s what makes INSIDE different and, I hope, special.

SILK HERITAGE IS INSPIRED BY INDIA This summer, Macclesfield’s Silk Museum is hosting a fabulously colourful exhibition celebrating the textile story of India’s relationship to the town. Inspired by India is a Heritage Lottery funded project illustrating the influence Indian design has had on the silk industry, on the Arts and Crafts movement, and then re-interpreted by artist Nikki Parmenter for the 21st century.

Nikki has worked with local community groups and schools to illustrate the colour and imagery of the UK and India’s creative relationship. The centre-piece of the exhibition will be Nikki’s ‘Silk Peacock’, the national bird of India, which incorporates Indian symbolism, Wardle’s designs and Morris’ patterns. Visitors are invited to join us at the Silk Museum to design their own peacock feather to add to the artwork during the exhibition’s run.

The exhibition will also tell the historic silk story of the relationship of India and Macclesfield. Local silk dyeing and printing company owner, Thomas Wardle, was influential in building links between the two countries and brought the artist and designer William Morris to the area to help him learn more about natural dyeing processes. Both men were ‘Inspired by India’; passing this enthusiasm on to the students at the Macclesfield School of Art, and helping bring Indian influences to the Arts and Crafts movement.

To tell this story the exhibition will draw on a wealth of collections, some never displayed before, including volumes of Forbes Watson’s Textile Manufacturers of India of 1866 which contain hundreds of samples of

Indian textiles, from tent lining to turbans, shawls to carpets. These volumes were an important source of reference used by textile manufacturers and students.

The Silk Museum was originally the School of Art; built in 1879 it established the town’s first museum which exhibited students’ work and items loaned from museums in London. The town welcomed the Duchess of Teck to an exhibition at the School in 1895 and the artist William Morris visited several times. The new exhibition will contain material reflecting the breadth of the School’s history.

Thomas Wardle, born in Macclesfield, was an important protagonist in the UK/India story, experimenting with wild Indian silk and discovering new ways to reel and dye it, changing the course of the Indian silk trade.

William Morris visited him several times to learn the secrets of natural dyeing and Wardle printed Morris’ first fourteen textile designs. Along with his wife Elizabeth, Thomas formed the Leek Embroidery School and Society. They produced some fabulous domestic and church embroideries using the lustrous tussah silk. A star item in the exhibition will be Indian Poppy, a Morris design on cream velveteen embroidered with silk floss in stem and satin stitch embroidered by the School.

The project also features a summer of ‘Inspired by India’ activities, including art workshops at the Museum and the Print Mill, tales of the Indian sub-continent with storyteller Peter Chand, natural dyeing workshops and much more.

Macclesfield Museum Director Sue Hughes said, “We are thrilled to have received support thanks to National Lottery players and are excited to explore this part of the silk story, Macclesfield’s relationship with India, celebrating the important people who continue to direct us to Indian pattern and design for inspiration.

This really will be a colourful and imaginative summer programme.”

The exhibition runs from 17 June to 8 September 2017

Perfect for a Day Trip or Short Break

Are you heading like a lemming towards an uneventful weekend at home – a weekend that you will never remember? Why not take a trip to Chester, one of the UK’s great heritage cities that attracts visitors from all around the world for that very reason. There’s lots to see and do at any time of year and for INSIDE Magazine readers it’s only a short drive away.

Our car journey from Poynton to Delamere St. multistorey car park (clearly signposted in the city centre) took less than 45 minutes (£6.90 for 6 hours, £7.80 for a full day). A two-minute walk then led us right into the centre. You would be doing well to reach Manchester’s Deansgate in a comparable time!

Our first port of call was the Town Hall Tourist Information centre in Northgate Street. The staff here were extremely helpful and enthusiastic. (As we later discovered, there’s a certain civic pride and friendliness etched into the facial expressions of all the locals that we met). Here we paid £1.20 for a Walkabout Map and Guide. The recommended walk takes 2-3 hours, though extra time would need to be allowed for museum visits.

This bite-sized little pamphlet, with its brief historical

narrative, provides an excellent introduction to no less than 58 places of interest. Whatever your taste, there will be something to please you. In 1779 James Boswell wrote to Dr Johnson “Chester pleases my fancy more than any town I ever saw….”.

Unfortunately, our energy levels were a little low on the day in question and we could sample only a few of the sights. If you too don’t want to be too ambitious, you can still have loads of fun just aimlessly strolling around and absorbing Chester’s magical ambiance.

As it was a crisp and sunny winter’s day, we chose to take a gentle but memorable walk around the city walls. These are the most complete walls in Britain and date back 2,000 years to the Roman occupation.

You’ll take in the River Dee, the iconic Eastgate Clock, Chester’s Roman Amphitheatre and a view of the oldest racecourse in the UK. The ornate Eastgate clock was built to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee in 1897, and remains one of the most photographed clocks in the world. Walking the walls is also a great way to discover an alluring lunch or dinner spot.

We descended at frequent intervals to view numerous places of interest, including the lovely church of St John The Baptist, the Roman Gardens, the Roman Amphitheatre and of course, the majestic Chester Cathedral - home to some of the finest medieval carvings in Europe. You can take a guided tour of the cathedral or just do your own thing. Here you can enjoy a delicious lunch, or coffee, as we did, in the impressive Monk’s Dining Room. Close by and allied to the cathedral is The Falconry and Nature Gardens – a great entertainment for children.

Also close to the cathedral are the main shopping areas – Eastgate, Watergate, Northgate and Bridge St, plus their numerous intriguing side streets. Here, a festive atmosphere fills the air, as the throngs of tourists and locals swirl cheerfully to and fro in these spacious and elegant thoroughfares. The principal and unique attraction must be Chester’s Rows - a 13th century network of covered first-floor walkways, housing so many of the city’s wonderful shops and cafes. With well-known brands, exclusive boutiques, fragrance stores and chocolatiers and the indoor Grosvenor Shopping Precinct, a visit to Chester is well worthwhile just for the shopping experience.

Take a romantic walk along cobbled lanes, unwind fireside in a cosy restaurant or chill in a luxurious hotel.

Take in a show or movie at the Storyhouse, the city’s theatre, central library and cinema.

I have only scratched the surface of this city and have made little or no mention of Chester Racecourse or Chester Zoo which would each consume the best part of a day and are destinations in their own right, best enjoyed on a fine summer’s day.

And there is still so much more you can do. Explore the city aboard an open top or heritage bus. Take a guided walking tour. Enjoy a leisurely sail up the river on one of Chester’s pleasure cruises where you can enjoy views of Grosvenor Park, the Meadows and the Eaton Estate.

First up this month is The Trouble with Goats and Sheep by Joanna Cannon – a quirky sounding title for a quirky kind of book! Set in the summer of 1976 (what is it that leads so many authors to set their books in the baking summer of ’76?) this is part whodunnit, part coming of age novel – a story about the secrets that lie behind every door. Mrs Creasy is missing and The Avenue (a delightfully drawn cameo of 1970s suburban England) is alive with whispers. As the summer shimmers on, ten-year-olds Grace and Tilly decide to take matters into their own hands. But as the cul-de-sac starts to yield its secrets our two amateur detectives begin to stumble on more than they could have imagined…

Really a delight from start to finish – beautifully written and a terrific page-turner too.

Maggie O’Farrell is one of our favourite authors (many of you will have read her previous novels including The Hand That First Held Mine and Instructions for a Heatwave (also set in the blistering summer of 1976!) and her latest novel This Must Be the Place is just out in paperback.

A reclusive former film star lives in the wilds of Ireland and thinks nothing of firing a gun if strangers get too close to the house. Why is she so fiercely protective of her privacy and what made her withdraw from public life when she was at the height of her fame? Her husband Daniel, reeling from a discovery about a woman he last saw 20 years ago, is also about to make an exit of his own. Crossing continents and time zones this is a brilliant portrait of an extraordinary marriage – what holds it together and what threatens to drive it apart. Told with Maggie O’Farrell’s trademark wit and invention this is a hugely enjoyable and satisfying read.

Diary of a geeky knitter Knitting in public On 10 June this year, the (knitting and crochet) world picked up their needles (and hooks) and went outside to knit, on what is the annual celebration of the best hobby in the world – Worldwide Knit in Public Day. For me, every day is knit-in-public-day, but it’s always wonderful to see so many people get giddy with the new-found ‘permission’ to whip their needles out on the bus and in coffee shops.

I actually did my bit for the celebration the day before, when I visited Alderley Edge School for Girls to do a lunchtime masterclass on knitting! A student at the school emailed me to ask if I would come in to do a talk on why knitting is great, in the hopes that it would drum-up interest amongst the students as she wanted to promote her knitting club – good on her! I hosted a short presentation on why I think knitting is brilliant – creative, fun, good for mental health, charity and political activism– and then we had a go at learning casting on and knitting. At least half of the girls who turned up were full of questions and eager to learn the stitches, which I felt (hope) means the talk went well.

I certainly got a cracking lunch out of the day, so I’d say it was a job well done! If anyone reading is keen to learn to knit themselves, I’m sorry to write that I’m

not actually available to do regular talks, however I did tell the girls that YouTube is a MARVEL for learning new hobbies (I 100% learned how to crochet through YouTube alone) so fire up that smartphone and get cracking, and as always whizz me an email if you want a starting point.

Wedding bells In other news, I’ve had my sewing machine running just as fast as my knitting needles in anticipation of two of my best friends’ weddings this summer. I always seem to set myself crafting challenges and I wanted to sew a dress for the wedding, and ideally wear a matching knitted cardigan. The dress was finalised two days before, and the cardigan was finished in the taxi on the way to the ceremony (I kid not), fuelled by a breakfast Bucks Fizz. I was delighted with the result, and smugly told any stranger who said I had a nice dress on exactly where I got it – ‘Cher Tricoteuse Geeky’ (thanks Google Translate). I’m not saying I am in a rush to repeat this, but it was a great feeling – that, and seeing two people I love be married, of course.

RAINOW CHURCH SCARECROW FORTNIGHT This years’ Rainow Church Scarecrow Fortnight is running from Saturday 8 to Sunday 23 July. The theme is Occupations - can you guess which jobs the scarecrows are depicting? Maps of where the scarecrows are situated are available in the Rainow Church Centre and at various other locations around the village. After your look around, pop into the Rainow Church Centre between 12 noon and 8pm for a wellearned cuppa and a piece of cake, and whilst you’re there why not grab a bargain from the sales table! All proceeds for this year are going towards Macmillan Cancer Support and local village organisations.

Rainow Church Scarecrow Fortnight has been running for over 10 years and 2017 is set to be the best year yet!

If you’d like to make a full day out, why not go to the Rainow Church Fete on Saturday 15 July? The procession begins at 1.20pm from the Robin Hood, with the opening of the Fete at 2pm at Hough Hole Farm, Sugar Lane.

There’s so much to see and get involved in – the crowning of the 2017 Rainow Church Rose Queen, stalls, competitions, tug of war, dog show and the legendary Kerridge Climb! Not forgetting the announcement of the winners of the Rainow Church Scarecrow Competition! So please join us for what will be an amazing fortnight!

YOUNG CARTOONIST SETS UP CARDS BUSINESS National Young Cartoonist of the Year, Christian Beeston, has started his own greetings cards business paying homage to his home town. The 13 yr old King’s School pupil has produced 18 designs featuring local landmarks, famous buildings and sports clubs around Macclesfield with the most popular also featuring on mugs and coasters.

His work has impressed even the most experienced retailers with Paul Bianchi, Chairman of Arighi Bianchi, saying “Christian is totally original, a fantastic talent and a wonderful flag bearer for the town and we are delighted to be selling his work.”

In a few months, Christian has already sold over 600 cards through retailers around town. Christian is quick to credit his mum, Lotte: “I’m the designer but Mum is the business woman; she’s the one who is going around the shops. I do what I am told.”

As well as the Arighi Bianchi card, which in reference to the founder’s Italian heritage has a gondola floating down the road in front of the store’s listed building on the Silk Road, Christian’s cards feature Tegg’s Nose, Shuttlingsloe, The Rugby Club, White Nancy and the Heritage Centre among famous local landmarks, each with a quirky design and witty phrase. Indeed his picture of card of Tour of Britain cyclists on the Cat and Fiddle Road was sent to the organisers as a thank you last year.

GREAT WAR EXHIBITION The Cheshire Villages Great War Society is holding an exhibition on Saturday 5 August in Macclesfield. This is your opportunity to visit and pay your respects to those gallant men who perished in the horrendous battle that lasted from 31 July to 10 November 1917. On display are details and photographs of men from Macclesfield, Bollington, Congleton, Wilmslow, Knutsford and other local villages, who died during that terrible period of British military history.

Whilst the researchers are very willing to help with any enquiries, they are also eager to obtain further personal information from relatives of those who died such as photographs and artefacts that will help to give a complete picture of these heroes. HIGHER POYNTON SUMMERFEST Now in its sixth year, this community event is organised by a dedicated and enthusiastic team of local volunteers, and promises to be the biggest and best yet, with a packed programme. There is something for all the family, with displays, live music, market stalls selling local produce, children’s attractions, and plenty more besides. Hot and cold refreshments will also be available, including a BBQ, ice cream, drinks and a licensed bar.

The Fest will take place on and around the Middlewood Way at Higher Poynton on Sunday 9 July from 11.30am to 4.30pm. Entrance is free, although cars will be charged £3 to park.

NOMADS OF IRAN AND THEIR CARPETS With special guest speaker Wiktor Wyszynski of Tribal Rugs UK Ltd. This charitable fund-raising event, to be held on Saturday 8 July will raise funds for The Welfare Home for Children New Delhi, India who urgently need funds to purchase baby formula milk, medical supplies and other general baby items.

How to Breathe Properly

One of the first questions new runners ask is how to breathe properly whilst running. If you are one of the many people who have this problem, don’t worry it can be fixed quite easily. The most common cause of being out of breath when running, which in some cases can lead to serious pain and/or panic, is that you could be running too fast too soon.

Top tips to control your breathing ■■ Warm up properly by walking briskly for 3 to 5 minutes. This allows your breathing to increase slowly and your diaphragm to adjust to a more vigorous breath, it also allows the nerves to calm down.

Why you should walk If you are just starting out on your running journey then walk, allow yourself to be a beginner, especially if you haven’t exercised for a long time. Try and get into the regular habit of exercising, slowly develop your fitness, giving your bones, muscles and tendons the foundations they will need to become a runner without injury. This can be easily achieved by putting walk breaks into your running; don’t worry, walking is not cheating or quitting, it is vital as doing too much too soon could result in you not being able to run at all or you may become demotivated and frustrated. Don’t get stuck in a vicious cycle of going for a run, running too fast, feeling out of breath and out of control even after a short amount of running time then turning back home feeling rubbish and deflated.

Walking puts the body through the same range of motion as running, but with less stress impact on the body and lungs, you may not be moving as fast but walking builds a good base for running, a good solid foundation to build the miles upon. Adding walking breaks into your run can make the difference between you going out for five minutes and giving up or going

■■ Start out slowly, even if you think you could walk faster, running slowly is still running; it’s better to start slowly and finish strong.

■■ Do your walk breaks before you become too breathless so that you are in control.

■■ Once you’ve slowed your pace, breathing can become quite rhythmic so listen to your breath and body ■■ When running your oxygen consumption increases, so breathe through your mouth to get enough air in; your mouth opening is almost ten times larger than your nose opening, so more oxygen in.

■■ Like any muscle, it will take time to strengthen your breathing muscles so be patient.

■■ Avoid fatty foods or large meals right before your run and give yourself two hours to digest a meal, as food can play havoc on your stomach and diaphragm as you begin to breathe and bounce.

■■ Try not to tense up as this can cause you to hyperventilate and breathe in shallow, quick breaths; relax and slow it down.

WHEN THE NORMANS OCCUPIED THE WHITE PEAK

A WALK FROM HARTINGTON This walk is an easy tour of a delightful and popular area of the White Peak, with no steep hills or difficult terrain to traverse, the maximum height gained is only 804ft or 245mts. It makes an ideal day out and gives the opportunity to see some lovely countryside as well as the chance to explore and visit some interesting and delightful old villages. Hartington does have an official pay car park in the village, but there is plenty of roadside parking. Motorists should take care to ensure they do not cause an obstruction. The village history can be traced back to the Normans and it is reputed that Bonnie Prince Charlie stopped here on his march into Derby in 1745.

The walk begins from the centre of this pretty village.

It lies on the B5054 just off the A515 from Buxton. The map used for the walk is the Ordnance Survey Outdoor Leisure White Peak map ref. SK128 604, and it is 7.5 miles distance with some minor road walking, the rest is over well defined paths with several limestone outcrops. Care should be taken in wet weather as limestone can be slippery in the wet. Walkers should allow about four hours and this walk is classified as easy/moderate with no serious climbs, therefore it would be well within the capabilities of newer walkers with a reasonable knowledge of map reading. There are however quite a number of stone stiles which tend to slow the pace of the walk.

The group started from the centre of Hartington, beside the large duck pond and the cheese shop selling a wide

variety of cheese. A year or so ago Hartington boasted its own cheese factory, the Dairy Crest Creamery, licensed to make Stilton cheese, but sadly this has now gone, much to the chagrin of some of the walkers who had hoped for a visit. We headed north along a minor road past the church of St. Giles, parallel to the one leading to Pilsbury village. After a short distance of some 1/2 mile we climbed over one of the many limestone stiles, the first of which lies on the left of the road which was easily visible. The path which is erratically waymarked later becomes rather indistinct.

It then heads north above the valley through which the river Dove winds its tortuous route. We climbed steadily up a gentle slope with the 380 mtr high of Carder Low on our right, and headed for a group of trees. After this we walked for just under three miles over short grass which made the going easy, except for the numerous stiles crossing the path. Running alongside the River Dove is the narrow road leading into Pilsbury village itself, which we could see from our elevated vantage point. Eventually this path crosses another minor road leading into Pilsbury village and it then dips down into an area known as Pilsbury Castle Hills. There are a number of abandoned shafts which many years ago were used for mining lead which is still such a feature of limestone country; however these present little, if any, danger to walkers. Eventually the village of Pilsbury appeared below us on the left - it is much smaller than Hartington but in the past it was an important crossing point and a defensive area with a

shallow ford across the Dove. Soon after we dropped down a fairly steep slope, the path running parallel to the village, along an area shown on the map as Pilsbury Castle Hills. It then drops down to Pilsbury Castle; this is a limestone knoll, shown on the Ordnance Survey map as ‘Motte and Bailey.’ The term castle is a misnomer as it never was a castle in the accepted sense of the word, even though it is described as such on the boards explaining the layout and history. The origins of this ‘castle’ are not fully known, but it was probably originally an Iron Age fortification, and it is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was designated as such in 1937. What is known is that the ‘castle’ was taken over after the Norman conquest and it was rebuilt by the Normans, the name Pilsbury comes from the Celtic ‘pil’, and the Saxon ‘bury’, and the Norman word castel, meaning a castle. On the map it is shown as a ‘Motte and Bailey.’ This term means a fortification with a stone keep built on raised earthworks called a motte, behind this was a courtyard called a bailey surrounded by a protective ditch. Motte is a French version of the Latin Mota, which is a turf bank reinforced by timber supports which have long since rotted away.

The term Bailey comes from the Norman word, baille, or base-cour, a low yard which contained the kitchen, the chapel and a number of other buildings. The castle occupied a strategic point on the river Dove, being a crossing point, as there were few if any bridges, and offered an important water supply. The steeply sloping remains of the motte gave an ideal shelter from the cold breeze where we had a coffee stop, as the picture shows. This point marked about one third of the total distance. After this welcome break we reluctantly set off on the rest of the walk. After about half a mile we turned left at Bridge End Farm and crossed the Dove by a footbridge, which is approximately the half way point

The Walk of the walk. It was here that the only hill on the walk occurs; we therefore climbed up this fairly steep slope which was unfortunately very muddy after the recent rain. Poles were very useful on this steep but thankfully short ascent. Eventually this led us to the minor road by a farm called Edgetop, and on reaching the road we turned left. By now we were in Staffordshire and the limestone changes to gritstone rock. We followed a fairly quiet road which went past Knowsley Cross, a carved gritstone cross on the right hand side of the road. This was easy walking and we continued along this road passing the imposing Sheen Hill with its clearly visible trig point on our right. After this the Manifold valley can be seen, and on a good day Hen Cloud and the Roaches can be visible in the far distance. We were quite thankful that the leader had not included Sheen Hill in the planned route! After just over half a mile later we arrived at Harris Close, a farm with a footpath sign where the road swings right. Leaving the road we followed the footpath, passing over again some of the numerous stiles which frequent the white peak area, we dipped downwards, following the valley the path giving easy walking. Before we reached Bridge End Farm we took another footpath which appeared on our left, then crossing over a footbridge which spanned the narrow and at this point tiny River Dove. Ahead of us we could see Hartington, and were soon back in the village where some of the members sought out one of the many cafes, some even deciding on more fortifying beverages.

When I was six years old I was attacked by a swarm of wasps.

Entirely my own fault.

I was digging at the end of the garden and bent my Southend seaside spade (not designed for London clay). I attempted to straighten it by whacking it against a concrete fence post. Unfortunately for me there was a wasps’ nest at the base of the post and naturally they took umbrage. My mum responded to my cries as mothers do and using a tea towel fought off the attack. We were both badly stung and the local supply of Calamine lotion ran dry as I was liberally coated in the pink stuff over the next couple of days.

Ever since then I have been very wary of the black and yellow striped blighters.

However, despite my ordeal I am a great supporter of the wasps’ right to life. If one strays into the house I don’t resort to the rolled up newspaper technique that my dad used to employ, instead I carefully (and nervously) usher it outside. Those of you that chose ‘A’ level biology (wise choice) will already be aware of what amazing and important creatures they are but for the rest of you here is a brief summary of why us gardeners should be grateful to the wasp.

During the winter fertile queen wasps hibernate, while the rest of the colony (nest) dies. Less than 1% of those queens survive but those that do start to build a new nest using wood pulp, chewed from wooden fences and garden furniture among other things (very interesting to watch). She lays eggs which hatch into larvae. These larvae need protein, which the queen provides by hunting other insects such as aphids. The larvae become (female) workers and the queen retires

to a life of luxury and egg-laying. As the colony grows the thousands of workers trawl our gardens for tiny flies, aphids, caterpillars and other creatures with which to feed the larvae. In return the larvae provide the adults with a sweet, sugary liquid.

So you can see that wasps are doing us a favour by ridding our gardens of millions of insects that would otherwise be tucking into our plants. Is there a down side? Yes of course there is. At some point during late summer the queen stops laying eggs. No-one seems to know what triggers this change but the consequence is that no more larvae means no more sweet, sugary liquid for the workers. Starved of their normal food supply the wasps go looking for a substitute and this is when they may target your glass of coke, your melting Mr Whippy or pint of Old Peculier. Ok, they can be a nuisance but waving your arms and shouting is more likely to end in (your) tears when the wasp becomes agitated and defends itself. Best to leave it alone.

Later in the year all but the newly fertilised young queen wasps die and their papiermache nest is abandoned.

Wasps never return to the same nest. I occasionally get wasps nesting under the eaves or even in the roof of the house. As long as they are well out of the way I leave them be and have never had a problem. In fact (and I may be tempting fate here) I have never been stung again since I was six.

Many of our insect species are diminishing, most of which are beneficial to us gardeners one way or another, especially wasps. So think carefully before you swat the next one that wanders indoors or call out pest control to conduct chemical warfare against a nest that you could easily have ignored. They do far more good than harm and our gardens would be a poorer place without them.

Just a short flight from Manchester (twice daily) takes you to Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. This is a deeply rural, fascinating area of countryside, full of wild flowers, cork forests, rolling hills, small hilltop villages built from ancient stone, vistas across a huge manmade lake where you can stay on a houseboat, canoe or windsurf, and a wild coast with hundreds of bays and beaches, with views to the west and wonderful sunsets.

Fresh air – there’s no pollution - views in all directions that are devoid of crowds and traffic, and some of the best wine and food in Europe – at budget-busting prices. Where is this visitor heaven?!

It’s the Alentejo (the name means “the region below the River Tagus”). The Portuguese pronounce the letter ‘j’, unlike the Spanish, so the word is pronounced Alentay-joe; think Jose Mourinho, a well-known Portuguese, whose ‘j’ is also pronounced.

This region, a third of the land mass of Portugal, has just 6% of the population and produces 46% of Portugal’s wine, now increasingly recognised as top-notch on the world wine stage. You can drive for an hour or more without seeing more than a few tractors and a handful of cars, through delightful countryside that begs to be photographed. Storks nest on telegraph poles and in trees, their huge messy nests forming homes for many much smaller birds in the massive structure beneath where the storks’ offspring themselves – usually just one or two white, very large chicks – sit; whole communities of sparrows enjoy social housing courtesy of the storks’ largesse. This is a photographer’s dream – fields of sunflowers, huge cork forests, roads lined with tall, silvery-leaved eucalyptus trees, and olive groves – with something to catch the eye at every turn, all backed by sunshine and bright blue skies from February (when temperatures on the beaches can reach 26 degrees C) to November.

beautiful marble pavements and fountains testify to the wealth that this region enjoyed in times gone by.

Portuguese explorers brought wealth back to their home country – spices, silks and styles of cuisine that are still echoed on today’s menus, plus the funds with which to create new building styles to celebrate their return.

Manueline columns – sinuous curves replicating the ropes used on their ocean-going galleons – are just one such echo of the past.

The cultural offering of the Alentejo is huge and spans 7,000 years, from prehistory (visit the huge stones, hundreds of them, just outside the ancient walled city of Evora, just 75 minutes from Lisbon – they were discovered only in 1966, just 51 years ago, despite being one of the largest groups of such structures in Europe) through Roman, Moorish and Knights Templar times. Evidence of previous visitors, long since departed, can be seen in all the small towns and villages, many perched on hilltops for safety, whose cobbled streets and stone walls remain, and where sitting outside in the sunshine, people watching is a happy and relaxing pastime to enjoy.

The active will love the wide choice of outdoor pursuits – from gentle walking on waymarked paths to cycling, hot air ballooning, horse riding, surfing and stand-up paddle boarding, canoeing in both river estuaries and upriver, birdwatching and much more. The Alentejo provides food for the mind, soul and body – it’s a charmingly relaxed place with no stress; the perfect antidote to our busy lifestyles in the UK.

Ancient crafts are still practised; carpet-making by hand using old weaving looms and pottery, to which whole villages are devoted. Cork is hand-harvested, and used for a wide range of goods, including bracelets fashioned from cork and umbrellas. Astonishingly,
