Well 2016 has been quite an eventful year so far and there’s still a good few months to go! The initial Brexit surprise or shock (depending on your viewpoint) has faded a little with time, but the effects have yet to unfold. There is only so much that each of us can do to ensure a bright future, but we must surely be positive – British? – and do what we can.

More recently, the Olympics have dominated the news and the achievements of Team GB have been truly inspirational. They give us reason to believe in ourselves, to discover our potential and through discipline and dedication to achieve our personal ambitions, whatever they may be.

On another note we are feeling a little sad because Jenny, our geeky knitter, ‘comic-con’ enthusiast and much valued member of the team is moving to pastures new. How we will miss her energy and efficiency, her humour and her smiles! But every cloud has a silver lining… she has promised to continue her wonderfully absorbing and intriguing Diary of a Geeky Knitter!

New Look for Bollington Vets After five months of renovations, Bollington Vets has now moved to their new, permanent location on Ashbrook Road in Bollington, formerly the Nat West Bank.

The new facility has been extended and completely refurbished and the ground floor now houses three consultation rooms, a large stateof the-art surgical facility, ultrasound scanner, dental ops room, pharmacy, separate cat and dog kennels including walk in kennels for large dogs, an isolation room, as well as separate waiting areas for cats and dogs and climate control throughout. Downstairs in the old vaults is the all-important brew room and offices.

Owner Nick Rushton said “Designing a purpose built vets was both exciting and daunting, but with the help of architect Colin Carthy and input from all the staff we are all delighted with the end result. We feel very lucky to have such a fantastic building”.

They opened a second practice at Tytherington shops in 2009 which will continue to see small animals from Tytherington, Macclesfield and beyond, with any surgical procedures being carried out at the larger Bollington branch as usual.

Local vet Nick Rushton opened Bollington Vets on Grimshaw Lane in 2003 after graduating as a vet from Cambridge and having worked both locally and in New Zealand he identified a gap in the market for a small animal vet practice in Bollington, and hasn’t looked back. He said “We

The Wonder of Walking Bollington with its quaint stone cottages and majestic mills is surrounded by great walking country ranging from hedgerow fields to the hills towards the Peak District National Park.

This wonderful countryside led to the creation of the Bollington Walking Festival, now in its seventh year.

Members of Bollington Walking Festival Committee have put together a programme of 40 walks for all abilities and age ranges. The walks are led by volunteers representing their local walking groups and by Cheshire East Rangers. Walks range from two miles to 20 miles and include themed walks with a focus on

local history and heritage, photography, art, and astronomy plus a practical navigation course.

This year’s festival takes place from 24 September to 2 October and once again the Bridgend Centre is acting as the hub for the Festival, contact details below. As a Walkers are Welcome Town, hospitality is assured with a wide range of pubs, eating places and places to stay. There is also a variety of mainly evening entertainment arranged during the week.

New owners at The Miners Arms And this time they’re here to stay!

It was with some trepidation that I called at the Miners one sunny Sunday morning recently; it’s probably a year or so since I was last there and after a particularly bad Sunday lunch in a dark and dingy pub I’d vowed never to go back!

This time I was out walking along the canal and fancied a coffee so I decided to risk it. What a surprise – I was greeted by pleasant, lighter, brighter surroundings and a very friendly lady who said they were definitely open for coffee and cake or even breakfast if I prefer. And sure enough there were freshly baked cakes and pastries on the counter, a great accompaniment to an excellent cup of coffee.

The transformation has come about following the arrival of new owners Catrena and Barry Peters and their son Jason Maidwell. The family is originally from London, where Barry had been a cabbie for 40 years but ill health forced him to give it up. Jason had lived in Manchester since he was 18 managing bars, restaurants and nightclubs so, when his parents were looking for a fresh start, they came up with the idea of going into business together.

up from London with all their worldly goods in a van, picked up the keys and took up residence.

There was a lot of work to do – freshening up the interior with new carpets, investing a lot of money in updating the kitchen, recruiting staff and generally getting the business operational. And at last, with the teething problems behind them, they are now ready to invite custom from further afield; the locals have already become regulars!

“I get the impression previous owners were trying to make money out of the business without really putting anything in,” said Jason. “We take the opposite approach – we’re here for the long term now and we want a business to be proud of – this is a new beginning, a new life for my family and we are striving to turn the Miners back into a great local, community pub.”

Jason, a qualified chef himself, helped to develop a new menu with Head Chef Darren. Where possible all produce is locally sourced and the daily specials reflect what’s fresh and available.

“It’s not fancy food – it’s good quality English food done really well. Fresh meat, fish and vegetables are delivered daily and everything is cooked fresh to order. You won’t find anything out of a packet here – the pies take three days to make as the beef is slow braised in ale! The beauty of this is that the chef can easily deviate from the menu to cater for specific needs, food intolerances and so on. Just ask and he will be only too pleased to help.”

The Miners Arms opens from 12 noon to 11pm on weekdays – the full menu is served all day until 9pm. Coffee and cake is also available all day for £3.95. At the weekends they open at 10am for breakfast, on Sunday the menu is reduced to make way for a roast dinner, finishing at 8pm for the evening quiz.

Celebrate the Colours of Autumn with the National Gardens Scheme Autumn may be “the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness” but it can also be the time for a celebration of colour in the garden with a change from the blues and pinks of summer to the dramatic reds and browns of autumn. If your garden is lacking in colour at this time of the year, some visits to National Gardens Scheme gardens could be just what’s needed to inspire you for the gardening year ahead..

Many gardens in the NGS have been planned with all-year-round colour in mind, while others aim for self-sufficiency with vegetable plots and areas for fruit trees and bushes. Take time to visit this dahliaholic’s garden and prepare to be converted! There are over 350 dahlias, mostly of exhibition standard, in well over 100 varieties.

Shapely lawns are surrounded by deep flower beds crammed with dahlias of all shapes, sizes and colours, and complemented by climbers, soft perennials and bedding plants. It’s an absolute riot of early autumn colour. Now owned by the Tatton Garden Society, it contains around 10,000 trees and shrubs of over 2,000 species, some very rare. Waymarked walks lead past a lake and through large collections of oak, hebes and autumn-flowering shrubs, some of national importance. Entrance is through the car park of the Swettenham Arms, which is also well worth a visit!

Diary of a geeky knitter Thank you to everyone who got in touch with me following my first article; I’ve received lovely messages, and have even been able to help some readers with their knitting questions. Please, keep them coming!

Craft for a cause One such enquiry I received was from a lady, looking for somewhere to donate her late mother-in-law’s collection of wool and knitting accessories. She emailed to ask if I knew of any local groups that could use the supplies to knit for charity.

After some research on Facebook, and some helpful comments from the ‘Stockport Artists and Crafters Group’, I was made aware of Neighbourhood Charity Crafters. This is a Stockport based group that helps crafters and local groups organise their creativity to craft for charity.

If you would like to learn more, visit www.neighbourhoodcrafters.wordpress.com You could also search ‘Stockport Artists and Crafters Group’ on Facebook if you want to find other local groups or campaigns that need your help or supplies. There are plenty of knitting clubs who need extra materials to make items for charity, such as twiddle-muffs for dementia patients in hospitals, or blankets to be sent abroad to refugees.

Dressmaking and ‘cosplay’ I mentioned in my last article that I like to attend comic conventions, known as ‘comic-cons’, and in July I attended MCM Comic-Con in Manchester with my fiancé, Ben. This is an annual convention I have attended for 3 years now, and I simply love it!

At comic-cons, as well as shopping for fun items and meeting celebrities from your favourite films, most attendees do something called ‘cosplay’. Cosplay is short for ‘costume play’ and is similar to fancy dress,

the difference being in the incredible level of detail taken to cosplay properly. The idea is you dress up as closely as you can to a favourite character from books or screen.

It’s a great way to connect with people who like the same things as you and to take pictures with your favourite characters.

I love to cosplay, and this year I am proud to say I sewed our costumes myself! From last September to June of this year, I attended a weekly dressmaking class at Aquinas College, Stockport, which gave me the confidence to completely design and sew our costumes.

Just another way I combine my hobbies.

For me, I designed and made a kimono, obi belt and a pair of ears in the style of a Pokémon (you may have heard of Pokémon Go). I combined all this with a bright blue wig, so I was quite a sight on the train! For Ben, I made a set of Sith robes, which I was able to tailor to him specifically after taking the class. Siths are the villains of the Star Wars universe, so Ben was quite the dramatic character on the day.

We begin with our Saturday 26 November concert at St Peter’s Church, Prestbury at 7.30pm, when we will sing The Five Anthems

by Henry Purcell, including ‘I was glad’ and the monumental ‘Hear my prayer, O Lord’. Our Musical Director, Simon Mercer, will be playing the iconic Toccata and Fugue in D minor by JS Bach which needs no introduction. The concert concludes with Dvorak’s charming mass in D, which is a rare romantic work for smaller forces that contains much of the drama and variety found in much grander settings.

Our Christmas concert, this year to be held in Prestbury Methodist Church on Wednesday 14 December, will be a quite traditional affair with carols, old and new, in many of which we will expect the audience to participate ‘with gusto’.

A future date for your diary is our Singing Day on Saturday 18 February 2017 at Wilmslow United Reformed Church when you are invited to ‘Come and Sing’ Mozart’s Requiem, a work of thrilling density and tenderness.

Singing has become really popular in recent years as people realise its benefits to both our physical and mental well-being. It’s fun too and there is a great social atmosphere. FABULOUS FUNDRAISER What an amazing evening. On walking into the Arts Centre, you could be forgiven for thinking there was to be a wedding. Tables were decorated with a profusion of pink and purple flowers, and scented roses abounded. There was a fabulous supper; many of the dishes were those of the Iranian cook Sabrina Ghayour, author of Persiana, all of which was prepared by volunteer cooks who were concert goers. In the interval, glorious music was played by Jennifer Pike, the violinist, accompanied by her father Jeremy. It included a spellbinding performance of Vaughan Williams ‘The Lark Ascending’. It was magical. All of this was preceded by prosecco and an amazing selection of canapes served by young helpers.

It was an overwhelmingly successful night that won’t be forgotten!

The new season of Bollington Chamber Concerts starts on 24 September. The Heath Quartet, who have played many times at the Arts Centre, and are known internationally, will be playing Haydn, Tippet and the wonderful late quartet of Beethoven, opus 130. The Atari String Trio will be performing on 29 October. The Atari consists of Catherine Yates and Gina McCormack, formally of the Sorrell Quartet, with Nicholas Trygstad, principle cellist of the Halle. They will be playing Dohnanyi, Francaix and Mozart, a very exciting programme.

In touch MICHAEL BILLINGTON AT BOLLINGTON ARTS CENTRE Michael Billington, the Guardian’s revered theatre critic for 45 years, comes to Bollington Arts Centre at 7pm on 30 September to talk about – and defend – his 101 favourite plays.

The plays are listed in his latest book The 101 Greatest Plays from Antiquity to the Present – and if you count carefully, you will find there are actually 102.

Billington estimates that he has sat in the dark and made notes on 9000 plays so far. That includes around 50 Hamlets and 40 Twelfth Nights, plus quite a few Alan Ayckbourns and Alan Bennetts. All those nights in the stalls have given him time to select his list that ranges across 4500 years of drama from Aeschylus to the present.

Many of the writers are who you would expect – Ibsen, Chekhov, Arthur Miller – but some of the names are less familiar: Susan Glapsell, Nikolai Erdman, Ena Lamont Stewart, Ray Lawler. In the course of a couple of hours at the Arts Centre, Billington will defend some of the plays he has included and some he left out: where are Waiting for Godot and King Lear?

“The final choices are mine and no one else’s,” Billington explains in the book. “Eyebrows will doubtless be raised about my final selection. I could easily draw up a long list of writers – living as well as dead – whom I profoundly admire but don’t appear in the book. If they are around today, I trust they will forgive me.”

Billington’s visit forms part of the Arts Centre’s enterprising 2016-17 programme.

His book will be on sale on the night and he will sign copies. Tickets are £7.50 (£3.50 for students). Please note the 7pm start.

BOLLINGTON BIKEFEST IS BACK Riders of all ages will gather at the Adelphi Mill in Bollington on Sunday morning, 4 September before setting off on a cycle through the scenic routes of the town. Macclesfield & District Lions and Bollington Town Council organise this annual charity bike ride with three varying routes, with the main beneficiary this year being East Cheshire Hospice.

In previous years it has attracted hundreds of riders for The Bolly Bash (48 miles - 76km - along the Cheshire and Staffordshire Lanes; The Grimshaw Grueller (72 miles - 116km - over the beautiful Cheshire and Staffordshire hills; and finally The Twenty is Plenty (relatively flat along a disused railway line 12 miles - 20km (National Cycleway 55), very suitable for the family. There will be a feeding station at the Rudyard Lake Hotel.

ENGLISH FOLK DANCING Do you fancy trying English Country dancing?

Maybe you remember doing some when you were at school? Dancing is good for you physically, mentally and socially! We are a friendly group that meets every second and fourth Monday of the month at Oakmere Centre, Spath Lane, Handforth SK9 3NS. We meet at 1.30pm, we stop for a cup of tea and finish at 3.30pm. You don’t need a partner, just turn up and wear comfortable shoes. We start with some familiar dances: in longways sets, squares or a circle, then after the break we often do dances from the 1800s (think Elizabeth Bennett and Mr Darcy!) Do give it a try – no previous experience needed. Every session is free, providing you join Wilmslow U3A (or any of the network of NE Cheshire U3As) £12 per year for all activities.

SUPPORTING THE NATIONAL TRUST With nearly 600 members the East Cheshire National Trust Association is one of many National Trust Centres and Associations, and is celebrating its 30th birthday this year. Over the past 30 years we’ve provided a varied annual programme of events for our members (all for £6 a year!) and in doing so supported the National Trust. We use our programme to raise money for National Trust properties and projects.

Recent examples of some of projects supported include dredging the central ponds at Hare Hill using horsepower; buying the plasma screen for the Woodyard café at Lyme Park; repairs to the ash lime floors at Little Moreton Hall and terracotta pots for the curvilinear greenhouse at Quarry Bank.

The adventurous Bollington Art Group is at it again, the annual exhibition in June was so successful and popular that we are having another, this will be a slightly smaller event, due to the size of the display area, but it will be on for four weeks, instead of just the usual three days. It is intended to be a showcase for the work produced in class, we always have professional tutors and it will be a good opportunity to demonstrate the scope and variety of what comes from members’ understanding and interpretation of what they are taught in class.

It should be a very worthwhile and thought provoking exhibition.

Simply Books Book Club Choice In the last year or two there has been an increasing number of what have come to be described as ‘literary thrillers’ – novels written with the pace and tension of a ‘detective’ story but with a bit more heft than a popular ‘who-dunnit’. This month I’ve chose two of my favourites from this genre.

The Snow Kimono by Mark Henshaw has an intriguing opening: two days after Inspector of Police Auguste Jovert receives a letter from a woman who claims to be his daughter, he returns to his Paris apartment to find a stranger waiting at his door. That stranger is Japanese professor of law Tadashi Omura. What brings him to Jovert is not clear – but when he begins to tell the story of his own lost daughter a spell is cast which draws us in to a novel full of delicate detail and subtle detection. This is a very atmospheric book – moving from Paris to Japan and back again – and has the charm of a carefully constructed puzzle that keeps you guessing to the final chapter (with more than a few twists and turns on the way). Aside from the compelling storyline itself this is also a book about love and loss and the inescapability of the past – a novel of detection, a thriller of the intellect.

By way of contrast Owen Sheers’ new novel I Saw A Man is set in North London. Following the sudden loss of his wife Michael Turner moves to London to try and start again. Living alone on a quiet street overlooking Hampstead Heath he is befriended by (and soon forms a close bond with) the Nelson family next door, Josh, Samantha and their two young daughters. So far so good… but then a devastating incident changes all their lives and Michael finds himself bearing the burden of grief and a terrible secret.

Moving back and forth from the present to the various ‘pasts’ which have brought each character to their present threshold this is a very stylish thriller – clever, classy and seemingly always one step ahead of the reader. A real treat.

And for the children I’ve chosen the winner of this year’s Simply Books Book Factor Competition: I Will Love You Anyway by Chloe and Mick Inkpen. Dog is very badly behaved - he destroys everything, chases cars and won’t stop running away! But when he finds himself lost and alone there is one person he can count on. A poignant and funny story from the celebrated creators of Kipper and Wibbly Pig – a picture book to be treasured and one which was voted their favourite by over a thousand children in our eight local Book Factor schools!

Inside People June Bevan June Bevan was born in Birmingham in 1927 and from an early age showed an ability to paint and draw successfully. At King’s Norton Girls Grammar School, Art, under the tutelage of Miss Alexander, was her favourite subject, in which she achieved a grade A distinction.

In 1953 June married John Bevan and had three sons, Nick, Jeremy and Simon. After living in the Midlands for several years, John’s work moved them via Harrow to Cheshire in 1966 where John became Borough Engineer in Trafford.

June had started to paint seriously in 1962 and exhibited her work and attended courses whilst bringing up the family. In 1976 she gained her teaching certificate from Elizabeth Gaskell College and taught for five years at Wilmslow Preparatory School.

As a girl, June had enjoyed singing and performed in Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas, playing Casilda in the Gondoliers. She also made a record when she was 20 and sang on the radio in a programme called Take A Bow. Art however was her great passion and after 20 years of displaying paintings in various shows, in 1982 she had her first one woman exhibition at the Manchester Business School.

Sadly John died suddenly in 1983 and as her sons had by then left home, June concentrated more and more on her art, drawing and painting regularly and attending courses to improve her skills.

June studied an Art Foundation course at Stockport College from 1995 to 1996 and later gained a degree in Fine Art from John Moores University in 2000.

Since then she has exhibited in many shows and galleries including amongst others, the Salon de Bezier, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, The Society of Women Artists, London and the Bath Open Exhibition.

June enjoys travel and adventure and once sailed in a yacht from Bangor along the coast of Wales navigating the boat herself while her partner slept. She has visited India, Greece and France and of course the purpose of her visits, as well as holiday, was to paint.

The effect of light, June believes, is of primary importance in her painting and depicting its subtle nuances is her constant challenge.

She is a traditional artist by background and temperament and has gained experience in all types of media and used a wide variety of subjects as source material. She also pragmatically paints and designs her own Christmas and birthday cards.

June enjoys reading and her current read is the Elizabeth Jane Howard “Cazalet” chronicles.

Another firm favourite is Bird Song by Sebastian Foulkes. Unsurprisingly though, her many bookcases are filled with volumes on Art and Artists reflecting her catholic taste in art appreciation.

June has been a member of the Stockport Art Guild for over 30 years and was a founder member of the Bramhall Art Society. From 10 September until 15 October a wide range of her work will be displayed at the Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery. Her exhibition, A Lifetime of Painting, can be seen Tuesday to Friday 1pm to 5pm and Saturdays 10am to 5pm.

Last Word from June I always wanted my own major exhibition so I’m thrilled to be showing my work at the Stockport Gallery. My aim is to transform what I see into images that will communicate my visual excitement. These may even reveal the unexpected, thereby giving viewers pleasure at many levels. I do hope that you will visit the exhibition and that you enjoy looking at my paintings.

The Walk - Padley Gorge, Higger Tor and the Derwent Valley Distance: 8miles with easy to moderate climbs Starting point: Small lay-by on the left just before Leadmill Bridge on the B6001 half a mile SSE from Hathersage; if this is full, you could start from the Plough Inn car park just past there, but seek permission from the landlord. The food and drinks here after your walk are delightful.

Maps: OS Peak District series 1:50000, the Dark Peak Explorer OL1and the White Peak Explorer OL24 Walk a short way back from the lay-by and take the first track to the right, running alongside the left bank of the River Derwent and heading east.

Stay on this track as far as the gate and footpath sign on the right. From here walk through the field and then along the river path, which can be muddy at times. Eventually, this path divides (241795) at the sign up to Grindleford Station and the left path is often very muddy, so take the middle route.

After a short distance, the two paths merge as you head up a gradual climb through the woods, and then a slightly steeper section up to a gate in a wall. Beyond the gate there is a good drinks stop with rocky seats to enjoy views down the scenic Derwent Valley south.

Leave here passing over the railway bridge, and then bear right across a grassy pathway until you reach a wider track. Bear right along this past houses and an old chapel. Before dropping

down towards Grindleford Station, look out for sharp turn left up a wide and steep access road between some lovely houses. At the top, go through the gate and begin a rocky ascent which stays above the gorge. Keep heading up and then along an undulating pathway of Gritstone slabs through this delightful conservation woodland section with the river deep in the gorge below; the rapids and small waterfalls are spectacular after a rainy spell. Ignore any signs to the left and after one mile you go through a gate at the top of the gorge and out into open countryside with views of our ultimate destination of Higger Tor to the north. This is a lovely resting point with rocks to sit on close to the stream by a wooden bridge; it is a very popular paddling and picnic spot for families during a busy holiday period.

From here, keep to the left of the river along a level pathway for about 100 yards then take the obvious well walked path to the left and follow a fascinating but narrow man-made gully which heads upwards towards Surprise View car park (249801). This deep pathway or former packhorse trail reaches the busy A6187 through a gateway. Cross here with care and then turn left to the main car park on a pathway set back from the road. Sometimes there is an ice cream van in the car park! Ahead of you, the views westward are the stunning surprises. If you also look east, you can pick out Longshaw Hall in woodland.

This was used as a First World War hospital and now has a small cafe and shop, and car parks for

other walks from the Longshaw Estate, well worth a visit sometime.

At the car park payment point, turn right and pass through the wooden gate. This leads up, over and between large Gritstone slabs which wind up to an amazing Gritstone tor. Follow the path round this prominent feature and head north to reach Over Owler Tor. Take care descending this high point on any one of the rocky paths down. From here you can see the higher rocky Higger Tor ahead and to the north east, the lower rocky Carl Wark, a site of an ancient settlement. Keep on this well trodden pathway towards the obvious climbing route on the left of Higger Tor; this is an easy ascent taking you round the left edge to reach the summit.

On a windy day, there are plenty of rocks or gullies in which to take shelter and enjoy a well earned lunch break. There are stunning panoramic views towards Stanage Edge, Kinder and Mam Tor to the north and west, or east to Burbage Rocks and south to Froggatt Edge and the Derwent Valley cutting its wooded route towards Chatsworth.

From Higger Tor, head off north along the summit path, then downhill to the minor road (256823).

Cross the road and beyond the fencing bear left and head across the moorland before going steeply downhill towards Hathersage. Take care on this descent before going through two wooden gates on to a wider track. As it bears right at the foot of this route, turn left at the fingerpost towards Mitchell Field (247817). Keep to the left of this house and beyond it, and then look out

for a signpost right, crossing a grassy area into a small wood, across a small stream and up to a stile into fields. Bear slightly right towards the next wall stile and then up the gentle slope along the path to Scraperlow, a lovely house with large lawns and an interesting pub lamp over its side door. Follow their drive to the left of the lawns, through an automatic gate and eventually keep straight on where their drive bears left. (NB. The owners have been trying to alter this route around their land and it may now be completed, but it should still be easy to reach the next section) Keeping close to the wall on your right, the path soon drops down through a delightful wooded walk. In May, this woodland has a carpet of bluebells, punctuated by beds of white flowers.

This path leads down to a wider track behind large houses before reaching the A6187 again.

Cross over the main road, and then walk up the footpath to the left for 50 yards. Turn right by a tree and head down the steep signposted path, going down some steps at the bottom before following the narrow path behind houses and gardens. Turn left on to the minor road down to the B6001 near to Hathersage station road.

Go straight across the road, walking under the railway bridge, until you reach a field gate in front of the grounds of Nether Hall. Turn left taking the sign-posted path as far as Leadmill Bridge and back to your starting point across the main road.

Wallet Workout Go grab your purse or wallet. You need it next to you during the five minutes it’ll take you to read this and it should be lucrative! One of my party tricks is to take a look at someone’s and save them £100s in minutes. This is my wallet workout, a self-inspection of contents to save you cash.

1. Pull out your debit card – do you have a winner?

A debit card reveals where you bank.Do you pay a monthly fee? If so, work out its annual cost (£15/ month = £180) and then ask yourself if the ‘extras’ the bank gives are worth this.

Does your bank make you happy? If not, then www.FirstDirect.com is worth considering switching to. It’s a fee-free account (as long as you pay in £1,000 a month), pays switchers £100 and has a linked 6% savings account. It’s won every service poll I’ve ever done.

Are you overdrawn? Debit cards can be debt cards too, and sometimes costlier than credit. For small overdrafts, you can switch again to www.

FirstDirect.com which gives a £250 0% overdraft, and the £100 switch bonus will help clear some of it. Or the www.Nationwide.co.uk FlexDirect gives a 0% overdraft for the first 12 months.

Do you have savings? If so, use your bank account to max the interest, as some current accounts now pay by far the highest interest on savings.

2. Pull out your photo driving licence – is it valid?

A whopping 2.2 million licences have a picture that’s out of date. To check yours, look at section 4b on your photocard licence, it’ll show the expiry date. If you don’t and it’s expired, you risk a fine of up to £1,000. You can renew it online at www.gov. uk/renew-driving-licence or at the post office.

3. Got a credit card(s) that you pay interest on? STOP It’s possible to save £100s or even £1,000s a year by getting a 0% balance transfer credit

7. Not got a credit card…? You’re less protected Pay using a credit card and you get extra protection under the ‘Section 75 law’ – which means buy something costing between £100 and £30,000 on a credit card, and pay for any of it (even 1p) on it, and the card firm’s jointly liable with the retailer for the entire amount.

If you like colour, then Autumn is a wonderful time of year. As the ground is smothered in a carpet of yellows, reds and oranges to rival the most exotic Turkish rug. Soft springy piles give way to the crackle of crunchy leaves. Most children, and I’m sure many adults, are drawn to the myriad of shapes and colours of autumnal leaves. While a lone leaf may not attract much attention, a million leaves invite exploration, comparison, sorting and collecting gallore. One of my favourite leafy memories is of making antique fairy books with my two children. Take a pile of fresh leaves and cut in a straight line to form the book spine. Then staple or sew the pages together along the spine and cut the other three sides of the book to the desired size and shape. Decorate the cover to create an ancient fairy tome or magic spell book which actually improves with age as the pages start to curl. If you need an excuse to get collecting here are some more fun ideas for spreading autumnal colour and learning.

Collecting Pick up some colour swatches from DIY shops and challenge children to find matching coloured leaves. As well as being fun and suprisingly challenging, it’s a great way of introducing children to the wealth of hues and shades of colour that make up our multi-coloured world.

See how many different colours or shapes of leaves the children can find. Challenge them to find the largest, smallest, most unusual or prettiest.

Using So you’ve amassed a heap of richly hued leaves and are wondering what else to do? If you recall having leaf fights when you were young, you’ll know just how much fun this is when you don’t have to worry about the hazards of urban litter.

Once exhaustion kicks in what better way of enjoying an autumnal story or discovering about hibernation than curling up in the cosy leaves before more leaf art fun?

Children

■■ You’ve made papier mache bowls now its time to try leaf bowls instead! Simply remove the stalks from fresh leaves and use the pliable leaves to cover a balloon or cling film, sticking with clear glue. For added strength layer the leaves and ensure that you finish the top and bottom with the leaf upper sides for maximum impact. Seal with clear varnish and display with pride.

■■ Decorate glass jam jars by sticking leaves to the outside. Place a tealight inside to create an autumnal glow and watch the leaf shadows dance accross the walls.

■■ Make leaf garlands by taping segments of drinking straws to the back of leaves. Simply thread string through the straw holes, hang and enjoy!

■■ Pick veiny-backed leaves for making prints in clay and cut out to create coasters or tree decorations.

■■ This Summer beautiful flower fairy crowns have been all the rage for parties and festivals.

Why not create your own leaf crowns instead for a colourful Autumn parade?

■■ Experiment with discovering which shaped leaves work best for making miniature sailing boats. Use elastic bands, string and sticks to secure the masts and use for races, blowing the boats with straws. Vary by making rafts from sticks lashed with twine with leaf sails instead.

Challenge the children to transport lego figures from one side of a bowl to the other.

If you remember trying these timeless activities, then you’ll know just how important they are for forging fun memories. And if you haven’t tried them yet, then it’s never too late to get involved!
