September seems to have been the month for people being on holiday or being back home with the holiday blues! Well one thing that should cheer everyone up is... Christmas is only 2 months away!

Halloween in the UK OCTOBER 31 Halloween is an observance annually celebrated on October 31. Some people hold Halloween parties on or around this date, where the hosts and guests often dress up as skeletons, ghosts or other scary figures.

Common symbols of Halloween include pumpkins, bats and spiders.

WHAT DO PEOPLE DO?

Halloween celebrations in the United Kingdom include parties where guests are often expected to arrive in a costume to reflect the day’s theme. Other people gather together to watch horror films, either at home or at a cinema. Some children go trick-or-treating. This means that they dress up and go to other peoples’ houses, knocking on the door for treat of sweets or a snack.

COMPUTER SAFETY HOME COMPUTER SAFETY 6 Tips to Keep Your Home Computer Safe and Secure The safety and security of your personal computer is almost certainly something you’ve been dealing with for a long time. If you keep your anti-virus software updated and establish strong passwords for your online accounts, changing them on a regular basis, you’ve got all your bases covered.

Or, do you? To make your online experience truly secure and keep those identity thieves at bay, read on for some lesser-known tips.

1. Check Your Firewall Checking your firewall sounds complicated, but it really isn’t. If you own a Windows-based system, just go to your control panel and type “firewall” in the search box. If your firewall is “on” or “connected,” then you’re good to go. If you own a Mac, click the Apple icon on your toolbar, go to “system preferences,” then “security,” then “firewall.”

Making sure you have a firewall in place can go a long way toward keeping criminals out. Make sure that you share some of your folders only on the home network.

If you don’t really need your files to be visible to other machines, disable file and media sharing completely.

2. Back Up Your Data Backing up your data protects you in the event of a computer crash or electrical outage or surge, like a lightning storm might produce. It also helps if you fall prey to the newer type of ransomware, which encrypts your sensitive data. You can do your back-up manually by transferring important documents to an external hard drive, or using a service like Carbonite. If you don’t have a significant amount of data to store, use a service like Dropbox, where you get 2GB of storage for free. 3. Stay Away From Rogue Websites Spotting a rogue website can be difficult, but there are a few things you can do to hone your skills. Look for a green lock in the address bar and the code prefix “https://” at the beginning of the URL while visiting banking sites, entering your credit card data or accessing your web mail. Be careful when shopping at a website that ships items from overseas, and don’t click on links sent to you in email messages, go directly to the website itself instead.

4. Avoid Deals That Are Too Good to Be True If you see a deal for 90% off The Beatles Collection CD, it very well could be a knock off. Even worse, some sites are known to lure customers in with an amazing deal, and once they have your credit card information they’re never to be heard from again – your identity may be compromised and there’s not even a product to show for it. 5. Never Divulge Sensitive Information No matter what website you’re on be careful of the sensitive information you reveal. Although it’s pretty much common knowledge not to give out your social security number or credit card information unless you trust a website completely, you should be just as careful with your social media profiles as well. Revealing information as innocent as your pet’s name or mother’s maiden name could lead to identity theft, because you probably use the same data as the security question on some other website.

6. Avoid Opening Unknown Emails Never open an email from an unknown or suspicious source, and definitely never open any attachments contained in them. You have to be careful of emails coming from people on your contact list as well, especially if the sender’s account has been hacked. If an email from someone you regularly communicate with has a suspicious link and unusual content, delete it and immediately alert this person that his or her account may have been compromised. This will help you prevent hacking and phishing scams where you may be a target.

A great way to give yourself an overall umbrella of protection is to use Kaspersky products. Its Internet security and anti-virus software protects you from malware, spyware, and viruses, and it comes with parental controls as well. Doing some of the legwork on your own certainly helps keep you safe, but use Kaspersky if you want to make sure all your bases are covered.

Thoresby Hall Thoresby Park has been owned by the Pierrepont family since 1633. The family takes a full and active part in the management of the many enterprises, which keep Thoresby well maintained, enabling it to survive for the next generation.

The park was laid out in the 17th century in a formal, geometric, Jacobean style. This was subsequently softened and rounded on the advice of Humphrey Repton and Nesfield, all of whom we must thank for most of the mature landscape that we now enjoy.

Thoresby remains the picture of a traditional country Estate; its’ parkland exhibits all the grandeur of days long gone. However, beneath all this lies the true Thoresby of the present day; a business, a home and a community.

The family has built 3 houses in the park, the first, a Jacobean mansion, was burnt down. The second, designed by Carr of York was demolished to make way for Anthony Salvin’s Thoresby Hall, built by the 3rd Earl Manvers in 1860.

The park is surrounded by several thousand acres of farmland and forestry, employing 50 regular staff. The majority live here and regard it as their home; many spend their working lives on the Estate.

Thoresby Market Thoresby Estate has faced the financial challenge of very high business rates charges on the Market Field for some time now. An appeal was lodged in 2013, with the Valuation Office, against the level of business rates.

Unfortunately, the Valuation Office has recently advised that the existing business rates assessment is correct and there is no scope for any decrease.

The current level of business rates makes the market unsustainable and as a result, the Estate has, unfortunately, been left with no other choice but to close Thoresby Sunday Market.

Thoresby Estate would like to sincerely thank you for your support of the Market over the years and help in generating our little community. It is extremely disappointing that something beyond our control has forced the Estate to close the market.

Northern Lights The most amazing natural phenomenon of all, the Northern Lights!

High solar activity levels have increased Northern Lights sightings this winter - including as far south as Oxfordshire last night, painting the night sky with shades of green, purple and blue. More traditionally, and for stronger sightings, you need to plan a foreign trip as far north as possible.

What are the best ways of maximising your chances of seeing the aurora borealis?

WHERE AND WHEN TO GO

They are one of nature’s great displays: a mysterious, multicoloured show in which the night sky is suddenly lit up with a wondrous glow that twists and swirls like a heavenly lava lamp.

The lights also have their southern counterpart, the aurora australis, but the principal audience for this is penguins. To see the celestial disco in its full glory, you will have to head north towards the Arctic, above latitude 60 degrees at the least. The snowy wilds of Canada and Alaska are fine viewing spots, but for most of us it is more affordable, and convenient, to fly to Iceland or northern Scandinavia, commonly known as Lapland. Here it is possible to see the lights from late September to early April, with October to November and February to March considered optimum periods.

THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND

Elusive and ethereal, it is one of the great, timeless thrills of travel, a beautiful, shifting dance of nocturnal rainbows that many viewers find a humbling and spiritually uplifting experience. It occurs most commonly in the Arctic region, and in recent years the chance of enjoying the spectacle has become a prime reason to fly north for a winter break, despite the often high costs and the cold. The good news is that the range of holidays available for viewing the northern lights has never been better.

The lights are formed from fast-moving, electrically charged particles that emanate from the sun. These are driven towards the poles by the Earth’s magnetic field – their varying colours are a result of the different gases in the upper atmosphere. In the northern hemisphere they are known as the aurora borealis and hang above the planet in an oval-shaped halo.

The hours of darkness increase the farther north you travel, and while the aurora can be sighted at any moment, 9pm to 2am tends to be prime viewing time.

It’s surprising how often the lights reveal themselves just as dinner is served, and many hotels offer an aurora alarm service if you don’t want to stay up waiting.

Where you go will depend on your budget and the time available, but a more crucial decision is what else you want to do when you’re not standing outside in sub-zero temperatures staring up at the night sky with fingers crossed.

It’s important not to become obsessed with the single goal of beholding the aurora, but to see this as just one of many thrills of a winter holiday to the Arctic. Sparkling white landscapes, fairy-tale ice hotels, romantic husky-sled rides, the hi-tech-meets-frontier lifestyle of the indigenous peoples, cool city breaks – these are reasons enough to go. With luck you will also see the heavens ablaze with a silky, swirling light, but this can never be guaranteed.

HOW TO BOOK: PACKAGES

These make sense for an Arctic adventure, particularly if you want to travel on a short break or in half-term and include activities such as snowmobiling, superjeep trips or husky sledding. Scandinavian countries are much better than us at keeping their transport systems moving in winter, but even there bad weather can disrupt journeys and it helps to have the support and financial protection that comes from booking through a tour operator.

Practical Car and Van Rental Chesterfield was proud to supporting Karl with a fundraising bike ride from Skegness to Chesterfield in aid to raise funds for Lilia to afford expensive Therapy. Lilia was born without a heartbeat. After being resuscitated for 10 minutes she came back from the dead, her determination being a sign of things to come. Lilia has been deprived of oxygen for at least 10 minutes and was pronounced HIE Grade 2.

She began to miss milestones from a early age and was diagnosed with quadriplegic cerebral palsy at 5 month old.

This means she is unable to sit, crawl or walk independently.

Intensive therapy could help her development and independence for the future. Lilia loves to be around her friends and cousins and wants desperately to join in. Her parents are committed to her having as many experiences as possible, and not missing out on anything due to her condition. Lilia would benefit from a new therapy called 'Therasuit' therapy. This is a 3 week course of daily 4 hour therapy while wearing a space suit, as well as having oxygen therapy to help heal the brain. This will cost in the region of £10,000 for one 3 week session. Lilia had her first 3 week 'Therasuit' therapy session in Feb 2016.

MOTORING REVIEW OCTOBER

KIA CEE'D SPORTSWAGON REVIEW: CAN IT BEAT THE ASTRA SPORTS TOURER? Having clawed its way out of the bargain bin, Korean manufacturer Kia is now a strong contender in the family car market. It builds an unusually large range of models, from the pocket-sized Picanto to the seven-seat Sorento, and has recently added a handful of viable hybrid cars to its ever-growing stable. But with the overall increase in product quality comes commensurate increase in price. And with Kia cars offering little more than their rivals beyond a seven-year warranty, cars like the Cee’d Sportswagon – the estate derivative of the Cee’d hatchback - are up against some very stiff competition.

Space – 7/10 The front seats of the Cee’d Sportswagon are well proportioned and the interior feels generous, with ample leg, head and elbow room for the driver and their favourite passenger. The rear seats are a little more cramped, and compromises will have to be made all round when

taller adults sit in the back. While this is in keeping with other cars in the segment, the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer is more spacious in the second row. Boot space in the Sportswagon beats most rivals.

The Skoda Octavia estate offers about 100 litres more – that’s a large compost bag – but the Kia beats the Focus estate and Astra Sports Tourer quite convincingly.

Straightforward features in the boot itself make it easy to secure loads.

Comfort – 5/10 The interior of the Cee’d Sportswagon is very comfortable for front seat passengers and adequate for shorter riders in the back. High levels of adjustability mean that long-distance cruising becomes less of a strain than in some rivals, and the general ease of driving – namely the light steering and good visibility – make this a strong commuter car. The back rests are noticeably flat, though, so take one for a thorough test drive before purchasing if you prefer a more sculpted seat.

Easy to drive – 6/10 The Cee’d Sportswagon comes with an enormous list of engines to pick from. Most offer a 0-62mph time of around ten seconds or more but the slowest is 13.4 seconds, which can feel frustrating in modern traffic.

The pick of the bunch is probably the 1.6-litre CRDI, which delivers an adequate 10.1 second 0-62mph time.

Apart from acceleration, though, all models are very easy to drive.

The very basic Cee’d Sportswagon models can be found at low prices, but not always low enough to justify the poor specification.

The verdict – 7/10 The Cee’d Sportswagon is incredibly easy to live with and has arguably the best warranty in the business.

It lacks the driving engagement of the Focus estate and the space of the Octavia, but it’s a good buy for families looking for dependable motoring. Where it falters is on price – Kia’s range is expensive, and buyers considering a high-spec Cee’d could be better off spending the same money elsewhere.

Reliability – 10/10 One of Kia’s biggest selling points is its warranty, which is for seven years. In the first three years, its mileage is unlimited, while in the

Method

1. Combine the butter, sugar, egg, almond extract and vanilla extract in a mixing bowl. Beat together with an electric mixer; gradually add the flour, baking powder and salt, continually beating. Chill for 20 to 30 minutes.

2. Preheat oven to 160 C / Gas mark 3. Lightly grease baking trays. Remove dough from fridge in small amounts.

3. Scoop 1 heaping teaspoon at a time onto a piece of greaseproof paper. Use the paper to roll the dough into a thin finger-shaped biscuit. Press one almond into one end of each biscuit to give the appearance of a long fingernail. Squeeze biscuit near the tip and again near the centre of each to give the impression of knuckles. You can also cut into the dough with a sharp knife at the same points to help give a more finger-like appearance

100g (4 oz) whole almonds

10. 1 tub of red decorating icing

4. Arrange the shaped biscuits on the baking tray. Bake in the preheated oven until the biscuits are slightly golden in colour, 20 to 25 minutes.

5. Remove the almond from the end of each biscuit; squeeze a small amount of red icing into the cavity; replace the almond to cause the icing to ooze out around the tip of the biscuit.

Gardening

IN OCTOBER OCTOBER

Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter. Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

WATERING

Hardly an issue at the moment!

However, do keep an eye on your pots and containers in dry spells and check for wilting leaves before it is too late; all plants that keep their leaves continue to transpire, so should not be allowed to dry out completely.

PLANTING

With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting.

TREES & SHRUBS

Trees (including fruit trees), hedges, shrubs and climbers, ensure they are well watered and check regularly to see they do not become loose.

Firm in well, but beware over firming as this will drive out air from the soil and can be even more damaging than loose planting. Stake new plants if necessary to hold them firm against autumn winds.

ROSES

Remove any diseased, spindly, old and unproductive stems and remember to burn any diseased material. Tie new shoots onto some form of support to prevent their thrashing about in autumn winds.

LAVENDER

Trim back lavender bushes if you haven’t already done so.

LAWNS

Rule one - keep off when sodden!

Established lawns - whilst the grass is still growing keep mowing once a fortnight with the blades on high for the final few cuts. If you haven’t had time, carry out your autumn lawn care programme - scarify (rake out the old dead grass and moss) by hand (hard work!) or with a machine, spike to improve drainage again either by hand with a garden fork or with a machine, add a top dressing of soil/sand/compost mixed according to your soil type (ask for advice at your garden centre) and feed with autumn weed and moss killer. This low-nitrogen preparation strengthens grass for winter; do not use spring lawn feed as this encourages grass to grow and it may not survive the cold.

After all this your lawn will look dreadful, but fear not, it will benefit enormously from the regime. Repair bumps, hollows, bald patches and broken edges too.

NEW LAWNS

October is the last chance for sowing grass seed and just about the best time for laying turf. Good preparation is vital for either: remove weeds and stones, dig over thoroughly, adding organic matter and fertiliser, rake smooth, firm by walking up and down and rake again at right angles, repeating the raking and firming process until the area is flat and the surface is a fine crumb texture.

Sow seed according to the packet instructions and lay turf in a brick pattern so no joints are in line.

Butt the turves together as tightly as you can and fill any gaps with sieved soil. Water well and keep off for 4 to 5 weeks.

Gardening Tips If you are short of compost, it is better to treat a small area properly than spread it too thinly over a larger area.
