Hello and a warm welcome from Inside Bolsover District magazine Hello and a warm welcome to Edition 10! As our regular readers may have noticed we are now changing our delivery dates. We are slowing phasing this in over the next few months, hopefully we don’t cause too much confusion and we are still here, don’t PANIC! From the May edition onwards we will be starting distribution from the 18th of every month.

For a user-friendly ’van aimed at couples with an impressive master bedroom, be sure to check out the updated-for-2017 Elddis Encore 254 Overview The new model year brings further enhancements for the Encore range of Elddis motorhomes. Encore continues as a four-model line-up but with a Peugeotbased low-line chassis and the latest Euro 6 engines.

Here we review the four-berth Elddis Encore 254, which sports a transverse rear island bed. At less than £49,000 and with a decent spec, it looks good value.

On the road The Elddis Encore’s cab has an agreeable spec, with cruise control, DAB radio, air-conditioning, Bluetooth and USB. There’s a large sunroof above, which allows in plenty of natural light and also opens for added ventilation. For 2017, the cab seats continue to be styled as captains’ chairs. The new Peugeot 130bhp engine is smooth and comes with a six-speed gearbox.

Overall, it’s a smooth drive so longer journeys are all the more relaxing for it.

Design Elddis hasn’t gone into overdrive with changes for the 2017 season. And our test vehicle may have been a prototype version, but it had excellent t and nish. The Encore’s exterior is nished in GRP with silver sides. New graphics have been added for 2017, oering some style to the square-ended prole. Exterior kit includes a TV aerial, a barbecue point, a satellite TV aerial connector plus an awning light Inside the 2017 Elddis Encore 254, there’s a transverse xed rear bed, a front lounge and a nearside kitchen with a washroom opposite.

Lounging & dining Taking in the lounge area rst, it’s a typical layout with caravan-style parallel sofas. There’s a free-standing table that can be used for meal times. Overhead lockers are placed on both sides of the lounge, with LED corner spots and dimmable back mood lighting.

The Savanna-Aquaclean upholstery is new for 2017.

It’s rather smart and classy, with four domestic-sized cushions and arm rests. A TV stand is conveniently sited in the front oside corner of the lounge. Elddis also ts a TV aerial as standard, while an external socket allows a satellite dish to be connected without the need for cable to be trailed through a window. There is room beneath the seats and in the overhead lockers, so good storage is available overall.

Kitchen Although the 254 carries four berths, it’ll be bought mainly by couples. But even with four people on board, mealtimes should prove easy, thanks to the wellequipped nearside kitchen design. For 2017, the drawer handles have positive catches and are easier to use than last year’s push-in design. There are three drawers and two lower cupboards in the kitchen.

You also get a Thetford oven with a dual-fuel hob in this Elddis motorhome. Worktop is limited, though – a fold-up ap at one end would help out in this area. The sink is nished in black enamel and comes with a clip-on drainer.

A splashback and new kitchen cupboard styles have been introduced for 2017. The microwave oven is set low in the overhead locker, which makes it easier to use and provides room for a small locker above for more storage.

The 189-litre fridge-freezer is tted opposite the main kitchen area. Night lighting here comes in the form of two low-energy LED ceiling-mounted down lights.

Sleeping The 254’s big feature is that rear-end bedroom. And for 2017, the xed transverse bed now has an adjustable sliding design. The bed’s normal 6ft position can be extended by a further three inches. There’s also improved access and added oor space when the bed is retracted, which really does make quite a dierence. The xed bed comes with two side wardrobes oering enough hanging space for a couple, but probably not enough for four.

Drawers are tted in the wardrobe bases while two overhead lockers look down on the bed. Ample storage is also provided beneath the bed.

Washroom The Elddis Encore 254’s side washroom has a Thetford electric ush loo and a redesigned basin. Gone is the old-style moulded unit – for 2017 it’s a larger basin set on its own with a new style of tap. It’s a real improvement. The washroom also has a chrome radiator, heated by the Alde 3020 combi boiler unit.

There’s no window, but a roof vent lets in light and provides ventilation. A wall-mounted cupboard is placed just above the loo, while the large mirror is now backlit. The washroom is practical enough, and there’s a shower curtain.

Yes, it’s in Africa, near the Sahara but in winter it can be chilly and only marginally brighter than Manchester, and that zellig tiling doesn’t offer much cosy warmth. Our tip: wait til spring, the best time to visit Morocco, when it starts to warm up a bit and you can at least hope to waft around your pool in a floaty kaftan, rather than hunkering down with a book, wearing 12 cardigans and a scratchy djellaba.

The hillsides are bursting with almond blossom, and the city comes alive with colour, and sunlight casts ornate shadows in every sensational courtyard.

Cuba

Wonderful Lisbon has absolutely every element vital for a great weekend break (or more). Burgeoning social, food, arts and design scenes; great little places to eat and drink; interesting old corners and markets to poke around; glorious architecture with just the right amount of crumbling, poster-paintbright historic facades. There are old palaces to stay in, rooftop bars with pools to hang out in. It’s beside the sea! And it’s all ridiculously, delightfully affordable. Go at any time - though April is a great time to go to Lisbon, when the days are long and sunny and the cobbled streets are beginning to warm up.

For long haul, guaranteed sunshine, Cuba is a perfect option. April and March are the best months to go to Cuba, weather-wise: when it’s pretty dry, hot-but-not-too-hot (between 19ºC at night and 29ºC in the daytime) and days are long and sunny.

Prices, meanwhile, aren’t bad, the holiday traffic long gone. Havana is heaven; we can’t recommend it enough (one of our destinations to watch for 2016).

But go to the beaches, too, for unspoilt Caribbean white sands and turquoise seas, with a Latin beat.

For short haul sunshine in Europe in April, Cyprus is an excellent destination for a beach holiday, or for walking. This roughly beautiful and interesting island in the southernmost reaches of the Mediterranean is wonderful in springtime. It’s beach weather at the coast - warm enough to swim in the sea, and not yet too hot; while in the rugged interior, April is the greenest month of the year, and the hillsides are bursting with wonderful light and colour: wildflowers and orchids grow along the pathways and fragrant herbs scent the air.

Roast shoulder of Lamb with herbs & honey ........................................

Forget about carving this easy slowcooked pot roast – pull the fragrant, tender lamb from the bone, rustic style. Perfect for mum on Mothering Sunday!

Method .........................

Ingredients .........................

1. 1.4kg/3lb shoulder of lamb, trimmed

1. Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

2.. Handful dried camomile (or contents

2. With the tip of a sharp knife, make shallow scores through the outer layer of skin and fat of the lamb shoulder, but not into the meat, cross-hatching the entire surface.

3. Mix the dried camomile, the thyme, rosemary, sage and oregano together in a bowl. Season well with salt and freshly ground black pepper.

4. Press a handful of the herb mixture into the skin of the lamb, massaging it in well all over the flesh of the lamb.

5. Sprinkle some of the herb mixture across the bottom of a casserole with a lid. Place the lamb into the casserole, then squeeze the lemon juice over the top, before sprinkling with any remaining herb mix.

6. Drizzle the honey over the top of the lamb and pour over a little olive oil.

7. Pour the water into the casserole, then put the lid on.

Transfer to the oven and cook for 2½ hours. Check the dish after one hour - the lamb should be taking on a little colour. If the water has evaporated, add a little more to maintain the dish’s moisture.

3. ½ bunch fresh thyme, leaves only 4. 4 sprigs fresh rosemary, leaves only 5. 12 fresh sage leaves, roughly chopped 6. 1 tbsp dried oregano 7. Salt and freshly ground black pepper 8. 1 lemon, juice only 9. 1 tbsp good Greek or wild flower clear honey 10. 2 tbsp olive oil 11. 125ml/4fl oz water

To serve, using a knife and fork, pull large pieces of meat away from the bone and arrange on a large serving place. Drizzle the meat with any pan juices and allow guests to help themselves.

8. After the 2½ hours cooking the lamb meat should pull away easily from the bone.

9. Remove from the oven and allow to rest for 4-5 mins.

Castle Street was one of the original streets of the medieval settlement which grew up around the castle. Both sides of Castle Street were lined with cottages and houses until the mid 20th century. The site of the Sportsdrome was occupied by three long-standing brick-built cottages, with sash windows and tiled roofs. The cottages had cellars going down into a pillar of rock which is said to have remained intact during Bolsover’s transformation into a coal town (from the 1890s).

So, Becky, how did it all start?

Becky’ I opened the salon when I was 20 years old, I trained in this very salon. After training and gaining experience in both hairdressing and business, I came back to my roots 4 years later and took over the business. I actually began my journey as a nail technician, but soon after fell in love with hairdressing and became fully qualified to provide both.

Can you tell me more about the products used for both hair and beauty?

Becky’ The concept first began 3 years ago but only became a reality at the beginning of this year.

We found there is so much information available to a consumer that it can often become confusing, so we found a new way of educating people on how treatments are done, why they are done, and what products are used. We provide Masterclasses for skin care, hair care and make-up.

Becky’ No expansion plans. I just want to absolutely perfect everything that we do. The main focus of the salon is customer service, which we have won awards for. We continue to work on new ways to ensure the experience is a most enjoyable one. We want to ensure clients are part of us as a salon.

A Film called ‘Building a Legacy’.

It is a short film featuring Civic Society members and Bolsover Town starting with saving the Market Place shops from demolition in 1979 when the Society was born. It takes viewers through the back hills restoration, the pit wheel refurbishment, town trail, blue plaque scheme, Bolsover in bloom and saving many listed buildings from demolition over the decades. Members will have viewed this film at the Civic Society AGM where it will have been launched early March.

Bolsover WI was formed in September 2013 to inspire women who wish to play an active role in the Bolsover community; learning new skills, sharing ideas and making friends in a fun and friendly way. We are a group covering age ranges from early twenties to mid seventies.

PINTEREST’S PREDICTIONS FOR THE HOTTEST HOME TRENDS IN 2017 If 2016 didn’t feel like #winning, then look ahead to 2017 - it’s time for #pinning If we wanted to apply a house metaphor to 2016, it’s basically been the equivalent of buying an amazing dream house and rocking up with the keys on moving day, primed with excitement and plans for the future… only to step through the door and discover that the whole place is rotten and riddled with wood worm. Frankly, the only way to deal with a situation like that – seeing as you can’t go back in time and prevent the deal – is to rip the whole thing apart and start fresh. So, we’ve decided that’s what (mentally) we’re going to do; toss this year out like a skipfull of renovation rubble, and take consolation in the fresh slate that the upcoming year offers. Cue sparkles, trumpet fanfares and… brand new trends! 2017. Like a blank canvas, freshly plastered wall or steam-cleaned stone floor… it’s primed and ready for us to make our mark on.

And, armed with Pinterest’s predictions for the hottest home ideas for the coming year, which are based on the upward fluxes in the site’s 75 billion (yes, that’s 75 BILLION) ideas, we’re raring to go.

If the increase in interest in touchable wooden tiling is anything to go by, the dominance of the classic metro tile may be coming to an end. Whether it’s diagonal slats, vertical overlaps or parquetry-like designs on the walls, tiling or cladding in rich wooden textures are a natural contender.

Clear up your vitamins, night cream jars and dirty tea cups the bedside table is smartening up its act and becoming more of a display space that ties in with the rest of the bedroom decorating scheme. Sunday, 26 March Mothers Day THIS MOTHER’S DAY, WHY NOT GET THE WHOLE FAMILY TOGETHER FOR SOME CREATIVE FUN AND GAMES? Here are some ways to inject some laughter and love into your Mother’s Day celebration.

Take an exotic “vacation.”

Even if you can’t afford to go to Paris for the weekend, you can still enjoy a little taste of France (or any other destination that intrigues you). Get some croissants for breakfast, pack a picnic lunch of French bread, cheese, and fruit, or order a meal from your favourite deli or restaurant (quiche, anyone?), and get into the flavoured of the country. For an added touch, adorn your kitchen or dining room table with a red-and-white-chequered tablecloth and fresh flowers, put on some French music, and teach your kids a few basic words in French, such as “bonjour” (good morning) and “merci” (thank you).

Go to the movies One good way to share family memories is to look at old photographs or home movies. If you live near Grandma or Grandpa, ask them to pull out old photos and movies of you as a child, and take a trip together down memory lane. Your kids will get a kick out of the styles of clothes you wore -- not to mention the fact that you were once a baby, toddler, or teen.

Find the humour in family life Start a new tradition this year by creating a family comic strip. Take a long sheet of paper, and draw three or four large squares next to one another, like a newspaper comic strip. Then think of an event, celebration, or something funny that happened this past year, and illustrate it with markers, crayons, or paints. Be sure to include dialogue, a date, and a title, such as “Life with the Smiths.” Older children can help with the drawing and writing, while younger kids can dictate their thoughts or help colour. Save your comic strip, and create another one next year and others in years to come. When you’re ready to compile all of your strips into a book, stack the pages and thread them together with sturdy yarn.

But if you want to really turn up the volume on fun, stage your own “lip-synch” contest. To begin, have each family member choose a favourite song from a CD, tape, or video that you currently own. Peveril Castle The imposing ruins of Peveril Castle stand high above the pretty village of Castleton in the heart of Derbyshire’s Peak District. Mentioned in the Domesday survey, Peveril Castle is one of England’s earliest Norman fortresses. The keep was built by Henry II in 1176.

A climb to the castle at the top of the hill to enjoy the breathtaking views over the Hope Valley is a highlight of a family day out in Castleton. Explore the remains of the keep including the garderobe (medieval lavatory)!

Peveril Castle (also Castleton Castle or Peak Castle) is a ruined 11th-century castle overlooking the village of Castleton in the English county of Derbyshire. It was the main settlement (or caput) of the feudal barony of William Peverel, known as the Honour of Peverel, and was founded some time between the Norman Conquest of 1066 and its first recorded mention in the Domesday Survey of 1086, by Peverel, who held lands in Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire as a tenant-in-chief of the king. The town became the economic centre of the barony. The castle has views across the Hope Valley and Cave Dale.

Peveril Castle stands on a limestone outcrop overlooking the west end of Hope Valley, in the midst of an ancient landscape. Overlooking the head of the valley, 2 km to the west, is Mam Tor, a Bronze Age hill fort, and 2 miles (3 km) to the east at Brough-on-Noe is the Roman fort of Navio. The valley formed a natural line of communication and had extra importance due to valuable mineral resources in the area, particularly lead.

Our Patient Participation Group held their meeting on 20th Feb. As usual it was well attended. I reported on the meetings that I had attended at HCCG. I also passed round the future housing plans for the Bolsover area. We discussed the plans and looked at how it might affect the Castle Street Practice. During this discussion, I informed the meeting as to where we have got to in our plans to keep a hospital presence in the town. I have had a response from the leader of the District Council, as well as keeping our MP informed. The group are aware, that there could well be some changes to how the NHS provide care for patients in the area.These changes, and the proposal to build some 1500 to 2000 new homes around the town, means that the NHS has to have the capacity to look after the influx of new people into the town.

We are seeing, in the news, that patients are prevented from accessing beds at hospitals due to 'bed blocking', and the need for beds in Community Hospitals like ours.

Another concern brought to our attention, is the lack of TOILETS and BABY CHANGING FACILITIES in and around our town centre.

This is not a good advert for the town when tourists come to visit, and it is very inconvenient for the rest of us.

We also held our CARERS MEETING on the 24th, Feb. where we discussed who we would like to attend and address us. This of course will be down to which subjects

and information we want to provide. As we now have the TV facility in the waiting room, it is hoped that we might be able to input information related to CARERS. We already have plenty of information leaflets in the waiting room, and our staff are only too pleased to point you in the right direction.We would be very pleased if we could attract some YOUNG carers to our meetings. We know they are out there, so PLEASE contact us,we have plenty of information to help you.

The next Carers meeting is on the 23rd March at the practice, so please come along.

COMMUNITY NEWS Bolsover Town Fc are a FA charter standard football club based on Moor Lane, Bolsover. We are a non-profit organisation who currently provide opportunities for children aged 6-14 to play football across 7 youth teams.

We aim to gather the support of communities across Bolsover to help the club grow and enable us to continue to provide opportunities for local children to build their love of the beautiful game. We currently have opportunities available for any aspiring football coaches to coach teams in the 2017/18 season.

We are looking for a manager for next seasons under 11's team. This team is well established but the current coach has to step down at the end of the current season.

We are also looking for a coach to start up and manage a new under 7's team for next season.

All coaches are with the club on a voluntary basis. The club will provide support to any new coaches and will also pay for coaches to qualify to FA level 1 standard including safeguarding and first aid modules.

We also have the Annual Club Tournament in July. This will be held at Bolsover Sports and Social Club, Moor Lane, Bolsover on the following dates:

If you are or know some who is involved with a junior football team who are interested in playing then an application form can be found under the documents section on the club website.

If you are not involved with a club then why not come down and support all the players from the sideline? Food and drinks are available for purchase on both dates.

Gardening for Mar/April APRIL At long last, spring has arrived! (or has it?) As you look out upon your garden, does the nagging question of “where do I even begin” sound familiar?

It’s probably been a few months since you gave those muscles and bones a good workout, so start out slowly and avoid that Monday morning backache.

TREES, SHRUBS & CLIMBERS

There still is time to plant trees and shrubs. However, by the middle of this month it will be a little late to transplant large trees or shrubs, so do them now. The months of March, April and May are ideal for pruning evergreens.

Caring for Your Annuals, Perennials and Bulbs April is the month for planting summer flowering bulbs like Dahlias, Gladiolas and Lilies. Mix bulb fertilizer, processed manure and peat moss into the planting soil. Tuberous Begonias and Canna should not be set outdoors until all danger of frost has passed, so wait until next month.

Plant annual seeds of Asters, Cosmos, Marigolds and Zinnias in the garden. When all frost danger has passed you can move your stored Fuchsias and Geraniums outdoors. Trim them back, feed and re-pot if necessary.

Water them well. When they have finished blooming, you should deadhead your spring flowering bulbs. Do not cut off the green foliage yet! These green leaves continue to grow for a few weeks, and provide the bulb with food for flowering next year.

Fruit and Vegetable Gardens There is always plenty to do in the vegetable garden!

Control weeds and aerate the soil by cultivating between the rows of plants. April is a great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants. Fruits and berries do best when planted in full sun.

Plant perennial vegetables like Asparagus, Rhubarb, Horseradish etc. It’s also time to plant Peas, Carrots, Beets, Spinach, Cauliflower, Cabbage, etc. Root crops like Potatoes, radishes, parsnips and onions can be planted at anytime.

LAWNS

The application of a spring type of lawn fertilizer should perk up the lawn and improve its over-all color and appearance. If there is moss growing in the lawn, use spring lawn fertilizer that has the moss-killer included, so you can do both jobs in one easy application.

Spring is also a good time to thatch and over-seed the lawn. Thatch buildup can smother your lawn and provide an environment for diseases. Remove thatch with a brisk raking, or with a de thatching machine. Over seeding will help fill-in the lawn and deter the re-growth of moss and weeds. Use about one pound of quality grass seed for every 300 square feet of lawn area. Apply a light compost or soil over the seed to keep it moist and in place.

Aerating the lawn will allow water to penetrate deeper into the lawn soil and reduce the need to water during the dryer months ahead. Use a garden fork and punch holes over the surface of your lawn.

HOUSE PLANT CARE

Rotate your house plants so that each side receives it’s share of light, for even growth and a balanced shape. As the sun’s rays strengthen, some plants, such as African Violets, may need to be moved away from a south-facing window to avoid leaf scorch. Spring cleaning of your indoor plants will keep them beautiful and help to avoid diseases. Remove any spent flowers, dead leaves or branches, or any yellowing leaves. Rinse the dust from the leaves with the kitchen sprayer. Clean leaves allow the plant to breathe!

OTHER TASKS AROUND THE GARDEN Although we think of this as a rainy month, it can fool us. Keep transplanted flowers well watered during dry spells. Be sure to take a little time to check the plants in containers and those under the eaves of the house and under tall evergreens to see that they are getting enough water. If you receive some mail-order plants or can’t resist the urge to pick up a few perennials before you are ready, make a trench and heel them into the ground in a protected area.

Remember that whatever you accomplish in the garden now will definitely cut down on yard maintenance later this season!

LOCAL FOOTBALL CLUB ARE LOOKING FOR DEDICATED SPONSOR! Chesterfield Rangers are a local football club which was set up a few years ago for the community, to encourage men of all ages to get into sport for both health and social benefits. The team has been established for a while now and we have been working our way through the divisions and continuously adding talent to our ever growing squad.

We are currently in Division 4 of the Napit Chesterfield Sunday League which is run by the Derbyshire FA, and are in a tight promotion battle at the top end of the table. We are also looking good for a long cup run and are hoping to lift the trophy in May. Despite a massive amount of effort and contribution from all members of the team and their friends and family, running a club can be an expensive affair. From all the essentials like kits, balls, nets etc. right the way through to general FA/registration fees and covering the cost of referees and facilities.

In light of this, we are looking for a dedicated sponsor who can provide support for our on-going ambition to be promoted to the top division, and create a sustainable long standing football club. In return for some light financial support, we are willing to advertise your business/ logo etc. on our kits, and also promote your business wherever possible.

Although the vast majority of Sunday League clubs are sponsored by pubs (of course we would welcome this), we would also encourage other businesses to get in touch. Even if you arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t able to provide full sponsorship, we would be more than happy to advertise on our kit for a small/ one-off contribution to our cause. We would also greatly appreciate not only monetary donations, but also any unwanted/unused equipment that we could use ourselves or auction at events to raise funds.

On-Call Firefighters needed!

We are actively recruiting for Bolsover fire station On-Call Firefighters are members of the community who are paid to respond to emergencies. They do not staff the fire station 24 hours a day. They are notified of an emergency call via a personal pager, which they carry with them when they are on duty.
