Inspiration is all around us for artists; it’s found in nature and landscapes, in lived experiences, politics and contemporary culture, in the patterns of textiles and the pages of books. People are often placed at the centre of an artist’s work, whether telling a personal story through an autobiographical artwork or a portrait of others; a depiction of a hero, pop culture icon or world leader. Sometimes the stimulation to draw, paint or sculpt comes from a small, everyday observation; the cosmos of colours found in a threeday bruise, the soft, fuzzy textures of a ripe peach or the hard sharp surfaces of cracked concrete. Other times the motivation is huge; bigger than any one person, bigger than countries and continents. Social injustices, political movements, beliefs and the forces of nature have all inspired artworks across all mediums, and will continue to do so as history changes the landscapes of the world. The final form of an artwork is just one of the many layers in the process, from catalyst to craft, muse to museum.

"‘This is a self-portrait. It’s one of the first images we created since we moved to the UK. Living in London was our dream, so the image kind of has that feeling of joy and happiness of when your dream comes true. It was shot in our new home/ studio. We were testing the available light and we loved the soft light coming through the huge window. The shoes and the pleated pink skirt are things we shot again and again over the years. You can find that skirt and the shoes in so many of our images that we created before we moved to London. N ew A rtist F air 1st – 3rd October 2021 | The Truman Brewery, London This autumn sees the welcome return of New Artist Fair, which celebrates its 10 year anniversary since launching in 2011. The independent artist-led art fair has set a precedent for emerging artist representation in London, using its platform to showcase over 100 new and recently established artists at each event to art lovers, buyers and collectors. The carefully selected UK and international contemporary artists represent a huge spectrum of the art world, with painters working across all genres and mediums, sculptors, photographers and printmakers. The New Artist Fair celebrates the living artist with its gallery layout which removes the usual booths seen at art fairs, bringing you closer to the work and the artist themselves. Many artists begin their career at the event, going on to 06

exhibit and sell with some of the UK’s top galleries. The weekend-long art fair - which returns to the iconic Truman Brewery in London’s E1 art district where it all began a decade ago kicks off with a private view where you’ll find live art being created through the evening, a DJ, fully stocked bar and of course the dynamic selection of artworks. New Artist Fair is open all weekend, 2nd-3rd October 2021, 12-6.30pm. The Private View takes place 5.30-9pm on Friday 1st October; tickets to which are available online. U las & M erve Merve Türkan and Ulas Kesebir are a photographer duo based in London, specialising in fashion, commercial and fine art photography. Deeply influenced by surrealisim, selfportraiture makes up the bulk of their body of work. Their work sees them playing with ideas of gaze and perspective, placing bodies in unexpected configurations while maintaining a sense of refinement and elegance. Their eye for colour is a defining feature across their portfolio, whether working with neutral palettes or sharp pops of cobalt yellow and blue, the balance is always perfectly executed through subject matter and composition. The duo continues to carve their position as top international photographers, with numerous awards and exhibitions. Tell us about your journeys as artists. We are Merve Türkan and Ulas Kesebir, selftaught photography duo based in London. We 08

met in 2010 in istanbul. We have been doing photography professionally since 2014. At the end of 2020 we moved to the UK from Turkey. Working mostly on our personal projects we also create images for our clients from the fashion industry. Our work is characterized by refined colour palettes and subtle humour and most of them are self-portraits. We have awards from PDN and IPA. Our work has been shortlisted in Athens Photo Festival (2019 and 2020) and exhibited in Phifest 2018 in Milano and in Galerist in Istanbul. How did you start working together as a duo? Do you have defined roles in your partnership or does the collaboration tend to come more organically? Ulas: I met Merve in 2010.I can say that I was at the end of my long university life before I met Merve. I was studying electrical engineering but I didn't finish school. When we met, Merve was already into photography. She was a member of the university photography club and owned a

DSLR. I don't remember exactly how, but photography started to become the main topic of our conversations. In fact, it was a process that developed spontaneously, it was not a decision made consciously. We made our own softbox by watching how-to videos on Youtube and taking pictures of each other in a room of the house. We were just having fun, exploring photography by ourselves. We shoot each other and our friends a lot. But it was mostly us shooting us. It still is actually. As we continued to take pictures, people started to show interest. Then we started doing works for a few local fashion brands. At the end of 2014, we opened our own studio in Izmir. Merve: Taking photographs was not a disciplined and intense process for me until I met Ulas. Somehow photography became the main thing in our lives. If we weren’t taking pictures then we were talking and thinking about it all day. We were trying a lot of lighting setups and techniques. We loved what we did back then and we still love it. We still believe there is a lot to discover about it. We don’t have defined roles in our partnership. We both shoot or do modelling for each other. We discuss, decide and do everything together most of the time. Do you find your approach to capturing images varies between your personal, commercial and fashion photography? We hope it doesn’t! We know there are some limitations when you are doing fashion or commercial photography but we believe you can work within those limits and still reflect yourself. 10

Is there a particular image or series from your body of work that has stood out for you? Merve: ‘Laylon’1 I guess. I love that image. It is us in the image so it is a self-portrait. It is a nice visual representation of our relationship. Two people trying to maintain their individuality but being together and doing the same thing for a very long time makes those two individuals a compound. Ulas: I agree with Merve. A strong and an elastic bond formed between us and that bond only allows us to stay away from each other for a limited distance.

Are you currently working on any projects? Merve: Yes, we are currently working on couple of projects actually. We are new in the UK so London inspires us a lot. We have 2 projects about London.

J essica A la z ra k i The family table is a recurring centre focal point of Jessica Alazraki’s narrative-driven paintings of domestic scenes, which celebrate Latinx life and culture while highlighting family values. With bright colours and decorative patterns in oil, the artist’s intense brushwork provides unique characterisation, combined with flat backgrounds to highlight emotion. Traditional viewing rules are approached with fresh perspective; distorting or exaggerating features and proportions to prioritise emotion over objective reality. 14

Born and raised in Mexico City, Jessica is now based in New York City. She has shown her work in four solo exhibitions in the United States and in over 50 group exhibitions in both Mexico and the United States. P ala k P atel Palak Patel’s artworks have stories to tell. Using paint to convey each notion onto the canvas, her inspiration comes from life at that moment as well as past experiences, her Indian heritage – seen in her vibrant use of colour which mirrors that of her culture - and the shapes and patterns she observes around her.

experimentation with materials has seen her develop a unique and distinct style, something that is key to her practice. Gold and silver leaf is another important element for Palak’s artworks, a signature statement that adds texture and reflections of light which change depending on the time of day you are observing the piece.

The artist’s process favours acrylics and mixed media such as modelling paste, gel and plaster, which is applied with thick, textural strokes that give her artworks a rich, three dimensional quality. Her continuous

C h an S u k O n Chan Suk On’s work combines conceptual sculptural pieces with documentary photography, using everyday objects that have passed their intended purpose such as out-of-date instruction manuals and packaging labels, re-forming them into new configurations with new perspectives. Her photo series ‘TT Portrait’ is inspired by the infinite amount of fluctuating emotions that humans experience from day to day. Photographic equipment is reorganized into faces conveying sadness, anger and disappointment, where camera lenses become 20

eyes, cables for hair and memory cards take the place of teeth and lips. They are 21st century portraits with a human connection in a world of emojis. Having studied Photographic Design in the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, On gained her Masters in Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. W end y van Bo x tel All may not be as it appears when viewing Wendy van Boxtel’s artworks; her uncanny compositions are created with the intention to trick the eye, questioning perspectives and the limits of visual truths. Combining optical painting with sculptural elements made from metal, wood and clay, the artist is well known for using several techniques in her pieces that play with lines, shapes, patterns and depth perception. Limbs, heads and torsos emerge from the centre of the frame as if from a hidden portal 22

through which the viewer could fall, hinting at unknown dimensions within our own reality. Originally from the Netherlands and now based in Virginia, USA, a lifetime of artistic exploration led Wendy to her personal practice, having worked as a muralist, graphic artist and freelance artist. C orinne C or b ett - T h ompson Corinne Corbett-Thompson’s experiences living and travelling in diverse countries have enlivened her sense of colour, shape and pattern. Her paintings have developed into moods and sensations with a particular desire to interpret the beauty and fragility of our planet. Through her art she wants to add her voice to the urgency of protecting our world.

Corinne’s process sees her emptying her mind, attempting to reach into her subconscious where many memories are stored that guide her instinctive application of paint and colour. As the painting emerges it gives her contemplative, meditative and calming moments, something which the artist hopes to pass on to the viewer.

Her paintings reflect the flow between space above us and the depths of our oceans below; looking up and looking down. Gazing into the swirls and colour formations of her abstract compositions reveals continents and cosmos, countries and clouds.

L esle y D aunt Lesley Daunt’s life in music remains a big influence on her painting, which finds inspiration in the expressions of people and animal faces, especially dogs. Musicians tend to be a primary focus, working in series, either in regard to the materials used or in the exploration of a particular subject. Lesley’s process sees her painting with inks, copper metallic ink, and acrylic. Whether working in a pop art style or with more contemporary compositions, her technique employs fluid marks and bright colours. Animals, figures and icons of music past and 30

N ae Zer k a Nae Zerka lives and works in Salzburg, Austria. Recently his work and approach to media has changed completely, breaking away from the traditional materials of painting in favour of purely digital techniques, blending graphic design elements with technology while still maintaining a painterly finish. Typical brush hand movements are counteracted with a computer mouse – a deliberate choice over a drawing tablet and pen. Nae’s process sees him working on several works in parallel, utilising all the infinite possibilities of working digitally. His pieces represent opposites; warm and cool, 32

frantic and calm, with dynamic lines and shapes combined with colour and forms that merge into an overall composition. Nae’s practice embraces the rise in recognition of visual artists in the digital realm, and the change in perceptions for collectors. N icoletta C erasomma Photographer and pop surrealist artist Nicoletta Cerasomma creates satirical narrative compositions that expose the underbelly of modern life, evoking contemplation and debate on the human condition. Inspired by the collective unconscious and the dichotomy of beauty and decay, she incorporates archetypes and cultural iconography with a unique cinematic viewpoint resulting in nuanced photographic tableaux of people and places. Her series ‘Cryptic Venus’ (2020) depicts women placed in suggestive scenarios, placed in diptychs alongside patterned walls, textures 38

and objects. The placements hint at tension and unknown mysteries, allowing the viewer the opportunity to create an imaginary world. Her images come from a personal place of exploration, where she dreams to live a thousand lives in one. F rancesco R uspoli Exploring the dynamic frontier between abstraction and figuration, Francesco Ruspoli’s work is an exploration of relational space and its changing possibilities within contemporary society. With thick, luminescent applications of oil on canvas in strikingly vibrant palettes, each painting enacts a symphonic dance of colour where subtle gradation and dramatic contrast express nuances of emotion and sensuous physicality. O enone Hammersle y Oenone Hammersley’s paintings shine focus on the world’s natural resources, drawing inspiration from her extensive travels on expeditions to Southeast Asia, India, Africa and Latin America, and her passion for conservation. Water is a particular source of reference for her recent series of paintings, which see the artist creating visually stunning pieces where paint escapes and cascades outside of the traditional confined space of the canvas; capturing intangible moments in time and space. Throughout Oenone’s work colour and light are used to emphasize a vanishing world of wilderness that implores the viewer to take 44

D orot h ea M agonet London based artist Dorothea Magonet’s love for making sculpture began with traditional stone and wood carving, although her work now embraces all manner of media; from clay and porcelain to everyday items such as plastic sheeting and paper packing materials, silks and patterned fabrics. Many themes run throughout the artist’s work, which is informed by political and social shifts, as well as topics such as the relationship between our physicality and identity, consumerism and ecological concerns. S ara V ictoria S and b erg It has always been the wish of composite artist Sara Victoria Sandberg to go beyond the boundaries of the real world; to create the scenes she visualises in her mind where the impossible exists as fact. Through her skill with digital techniques, combined with her own photography, she has the ability to create surreal and fantastical worlds full of beauty and mystery within her artworks. Previously Sara found her passion in drawing and watercolours, practices which the artist has been able to transfer to her digital work, which is enhanced by her painterly thinking. Likening light and shadow to her paintbrush, 54

each of her pieces presents its own mood and atmosphere as we catch a glimpse at a moment in time within her extraordinary worlds. Animals are a recurring theme, becoming the vehicle to create a story for the viewer, transcending into the realm of dreams. C lare L ittleton Through her paintings of landscapes, wildlife and people, Clare Littleton aims to motivate others to protect the true wonder and beauty of the natural world, inspired by an anthropological perspective and a lifetime of boundless travels. Painting with oil onto either canvas or copper, Flemish methods of the Old Masters are a big influence for the artist, as she creates emotional interpretations of art from themes inspired by her own life experience. Her latest work also incorporates mixed media and intricately handwoven beadwork. 60

Having been accepted into the London Art Biennale 2021, Clare’s painting ‘Illusions of Grandeur’ was recently exhibited in Chelsea, and as a result her work has been selected to be exhibited for a month long exhibition in Chianciano Tuscany Italy in 2022. J uliette W est b roo k - F inc h Colourful, luminescent paint fills every inch of Juliette Westbrook-Finch’s canvases. The artist creates poetic pieces, where shapes dance together in a perfect balance of composition and form. Painting with watercolours, Juliette’s process sees her using non-traditional techniques, embracing bold marks and bright colour palettes on specially made watercolour canvas. She paints intuitively in abstract, semi-abstract and surreal formations, taking inspiration from the Law of Attraction, quantum physics and spirituality – each piece has a meaning behind it, and is accompanied by a poem. 62

Based in Cornwall, Juliette is also the author of three poetry books alongside her painting practice. She is available for commission, for those looking for the perfect piece in her unique style.

M ic h ael I an G oulding Throughout his artistic career Michael Ian Goulding has worked in a variety of media and subjects, all with the purpose of creating something beautiful and uplifting. This journey has led him to black and white photography and a focus on the female form, which is a conclusive representation of beauty for the artist.

Michael has exhibited in venues across North America, Europe and Asia and has had his artwork published in numerous publications. This autumn he will have works in the Artexpo New York Art Fair and at FotoNostrum Gallery, Barcelona, Spain, as part of the 6th Biennial of Fine Art and Documentary Photography.

This monochromatic approach is used to accentuate the beauty, offering a different perspective of the world which is usually seen in colour. The high contrast of black and white photography highlights the interplay of light and shadow, as well as textural detail.

Working with oil and acrylic on canvas, the artist’s process is rooted in minimalism, where a search for simplicity may lead to the essence of life in his paintings. Repetition and slight variation of colours produce a spiritual understanding of the inexplicable – although 68

it is up to the viewer how to approach and contain them. His paintings are created with several layers which constantly change like a living creature.
