Los días 17, 18 y 19 de noviembre se realizará el tercer Festival de Jazz Latino de la Riviera Maya 2005 organizado por el Fideicomiso de Promoción Turística de la Riviera Maya. Otro año más la Riviera Maya se honra con artistas internacionales combinando la música jazz con un entorno paradisíaco.
The third Riviera Maya Latin Jazz Festival, organized by the Riviera Maya Tourism Board, takes place of November 17, 18 & 19. Riviera Maya will be honored once again with the presence of international jazz artists combining jazz music with a scenery in paradise.
Este año tendremos a dos de las mejores voces de la escena jazzística nacional, Iraida Noriega y Magos Herrera, quienes en esta ocasión compartirán el escenario para mostrarnos un espectáculo en conjunto fuera de serie. Su presentación será abierta al público el día jueves 17 de noviembre en el Parque Central. Ese mismo día se presentará Manelo que nos deleitará con lo mejor del jazz latino local con una propuesta nueva y diferente. Además el grupo consentido de Playa del Carmen, Aguamala, se presenta nuevamente con su repertorio original de jazz-rock como anfitriones de este festival.
This year Iraida Noriega and Magos Herrera, two of the most beautiful voices of the Mexican jazz scene, will share a stage to give us an amazing joint performance. Their show is in Parque Central on November 17th , and it´s free and open to all. On that same night, Manelo will perform some of the best local latin jazz music with a fresh and different take. Playa del Carmen favorites, Aguamala, will join us one more with their original jazz-rock repertoire as hosts of the festival.

On Friday, November 18th, the Royal Hideaway Hotel will be the venue where Magos Herrera and Iraida Noriega will perform their second show in the festival. On the same night, Elizabeth Meza, great jazz singer with a respected and internationally acclaimed career, will delight us in the company of her first class musicians. This spectacle will be unique because it combines the presence of four of the best voices in Mexico that will share a stage with great Mexican musicians Enrique Nery & Cristóbal López. The youngest of the Touissant dynasty, Cecilia, is the special guest of the night. For this only occasion she will be joined by her famed brothers.

A true Brazilian musical living legend, Ivan Lins, performs on Saturday, November 19th a free concert in Playa Mamita´s & Tukán. Joining him for the first time are the Toussaint brothers, Enrique, Eugenio & Fernando who make up the most important contemporary jazz band in Mexico: Sacbé. We will also enjoy a performance by Mint Condition, an extraordinary band from Minneapolis that fusions rhythm & blues, hip-hop and jazz to create one of the most original sounds of the moment that has earned them the top spots in Billboard.

Primera Etapa: Antecedentes y “Grito de Independencia”
First Stage: Antecedents and the “Cry for Independence” (El Grito)
Esta etapa comienza a principios de la década, entre 1800 y 1810, cuando a los ricos y latifundistas colonos de la Nueva España les urgía una independencia, ya que no deseaban compartir la riqueza del nuevo pueblo con los españoles peninsulares a quienes también se les llamaba “gachupines”. Los intelectuales, generalmente criollos, estaban convencidos de las nuevas ideas liberales de la época, y los indígenas y mestizos sufrían la enorme desigualdad social. En 1808, Napoleón ocupa España, por lo tanto los españoles estaban muy ocupados defendiendo su país. El pueblo de “Nueva España”, al enterarse de la invasión francesa en la península, aprovecha para promover el movimiento de la independencia. Se tenía planeado comenzar el movimiento de independencia el 2 de octubre en San Juan de los Lagos (Jalisco), pero por denuncias hechas, fue necesario adelantarlo para septiembre. Ya que se avisó que la conspiración había sido descubierta, Don Miguel Hidalgo decidió iniciar la lucha inmediatamente en Dolores.
This stage begins early in the decade, between 1800 and 1810, when the rich settlers of New Spain were eager for independence from the Crown because they no longer wanted to share the wealth of the new land with peninsular Spaniards, then known as “Gachupines”. The intellectuals, generally criollos, lived by the new liberal ideas of the times, while the Indians and mestizos suffered from the huge social inequalities. Since Napoleon invaded Spain in 1808, the Spaniards where very busy defending their country. As soon as people in New Spain found out about the French invasion to the peninsula they took advantage of the opportunity and started promoting the movement towards independence. The original plan was to begin the movement on October 2nd, but due to leaks in information, it was necessary to move the date up one month to September. When the leaders received news that their conspiracy had been discovered, Don Miguel Hidalgo decided to immediately begin the fight in the town of Dolores.

A las 12 de la noche del 16 de septiembre de 1810, Hidalgo llamó al pueblo tocando la campana de la iglesia, este acudió al llamado y con el grito ¡”Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!, ¡Viva Fernando VII! y ¡Muera el mal gobierno!”; y enarbolando el estandarte de la Virgen de Guadalupe, incitó al pueblo a levantarse en rebelión. A este suceso se le conoce como el “Grito de Dolores”. Hidalgo acusó a los españoles de pretender entregar el reino a los franceses y hacer peligrar la religión y en seguida informó a los habitantes que quedaban exentos de pagar impuestos e iba a realizarse la independencia. Fue una guerra de once años llena de heroísmo y convicción; por ello, este mes es nuestro momento patriótico por excelencia. Adornos con los tres colores patrios, la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe, el cura Hidalgo y la campana de Dolores son los símbolos que alegran y dan color a casas, calles y plazas de cada poblado y ciudades a lo largo de la República Mexicana. La celebración es una gran fiesta mexicana la cual, a lo contrario de otros países, se festeja en la fecha de su inicio, no de su culminación. Comienza en la noche del 15 de Septiembre de cada año, concentrada en la plaza del palacio municipal de cada localidad, donde alegremente acuden sus habitantes a una colorida fiesta popular. La historia de esta guerra es sumamente extensa, pero a su vez muy interesante. eptember 16, 1810 is the date that marks the beginning of the Mexican independence, an 11-year-long war full of heroism and strong convictions with a legacy that is reflected this month with strong patriotic sentiments. Adornments with the three national colors, the image of the Virgen of Guadalupe, the priest Hidalgo and the Dolores Bell are the symbols that enliven and color houses, streets and plazas of every town and city in the Mexican Republic. This is a very important Mexican holiday which, unlike other countries´ traditions, is celebrated on the date it began and not on the date it ended. The festivities begin every year on the night of September 15th, with a colorful and popular gathering in the plazas of the government buildings in each town. The history that surrounds this war is extremely extensive, but nonetheless interesting. We give you a wide scope of the main events that led to the Mexican Independence.

En Valladolid (estado de Hidalgo), ciudad que fue tomada sin ninguna lucha, Hidalgo promulgó las primeras reformas sociales, lo que hizo que más gente se le uniera. También se hizo la primera reforma agraria en la cual se manifestó que los indígenas eran propietarios de la tierra, se suprimieron los tributos y se confirmó la libertad de los esclavos. Después de algunas grandes derrotas en batalla los líderes decidieron dirigirse a Estados Unidos con la finalidad de pedir ayuda económica, pero Elizondo, jefe del movimiento libertador en Coahuila, los traicionó y los líderes fueron arrestados en Acatita de Baján (Las Norias). Hidalgo, Allende, Aldama y Jiménez fueron juzgados y condenados a morir fusilados. Luego de ser fusilados los decapitaron y sus cabezas las pusieron dentro de jaulas y las colgaron en las 4 esquinas de la Alhóndiga de Granaditas. La muerte de estos caudillos marcó el final de la primera etapa de la lucha por la independencia.

Iturbide. After 11 long years in war, the criollos and the town in general were starting to feel the rebellion was at a loss; while in the South, Guerrero was leading an undefeated guerilla warfare.
Iturbide, quien representa a la parte conservadora, decide mandarle una carta a Guerrero donde le ofrece buenas condiciones, entre ellas se reconocería su grado, su ejército y sus tierras; y que en el caso de no llegar a un acuerdo sería él mismo quien intervendría para lograr la independencia. Viendo esto, Guerrero se interesó mucho en que Iturbide deseara la independencia, así que buscó la forma de entrevistarse con él. Después de largas conversaciones en Acatempan queda formalizada la unión de Guerrero e Iturbide.
The conservative Iturbide sent a letter to Guerrero where he offered him good conditions for a treaty, such as the recognition of his position, his armies and his lands, and that in the case that no agreement was reached, Iturbide himself would intercede for Independence. Guerrero was extremely interested when he heard that Iturbide was also fighting for Independence, so he accepted to meet with him. After long conversations in Acatempan, the union between Iturbide and Guerrero was formalized. Iturbide was able to join the Spaniards and the criollos under one same army: the Trigarante. They swore under the same three postulates of the Tres Garantías (Three Guarantees): union (red), independence (green) and religion (white).
El 27 de septiembre, el ejército Trigarante, con Iturbide al frente, hizo su entrada triunfal a México y el 28 se nombró al primer gobierno independiente. Así después de once años de lucha México se proclama un país independiente.

THE MEXICAN PRIDE IN XCARET a Charrería, una de las actividades más representativas del pueblo mexicano, encierra una serie de hermosas tradiciones y retrata el carácter alegre y bravío del jinete mestizo de campo, su fuerza, arte y valentía. Aunque los caballos no existían en el continente americano y después de la conquista estuvieron restringidos al uso de los españoles, con el desarrollo del sistema hacendero, algunos indígenas privilegiados pudieron entrenarse en los campos y trabajar en las caballerizas. Así nace lo que más tarde se convertiría en el deporte nacional mexicano.

The escaramuza, or skirmish, is performed by 8 amazons wearing the typical dress of the Adelitas, which was first worn during the Mexican Revolution. This is a tribute to the courage and generosity of those revolutionary young women who left the security of their homes to fight alongside their husbands, riding sidesaddle (in saddles specially designed for women). The musical background is performed by a typical mariachi, which provides the show with the harmony of the traditional marches, the fanfares, the huapangos, and other regional songs related to the country, the ranches, the women and the loyal horse. All the operations of the stable are supervised by specialized veterinarians and qualified personnel, responsible of training horses and riders for the presentation of the spectacle and to raise Aztec horses.

a estamos en Septiembre, mes en el que festejamos nuestra Independencia y en el que aflora más que nunca el sentimiento patriótico entre los mexicanos. En honor a eso, armamos grandes reventones en los que comemos todo lo que nos hemos aguantado durante el año y bebemos mucho tequila, pero también nos llenamos de orgullo impregnando las calles y el alma de verde, blanco y rojo. Sin duda, el sello característico de nuestras fiestas patrias es la exquisita gastronomía mexicana, con una variedad increíble de sabores, olores y colores. Entre los platillos típicos que se comen el 15 de Septiembre están: el pozole, los tamales, el atole y toda clase de antojitos como quesadillas, tacos, enchiladas, tlacoyos, etc. Pero hay un platillo por demás especial y simbólico que no puede faltar en estas fechas: El chile en nogada. Considerado internacionalmente como uno de los platos más selectos de la alta cocina mexicana por su estética y exquisitez, el chile en nogada está estrechamente unido al proceso de emancipación de México de la Corona Española.
Cuenta la Historia que Agustín de Iturbide, después de firmar el Tratado de Córdoba, hecho que consumó la Independencia de México, decidió festejar su cumpleaños (28 de Agosto) en la ciudad de Puebla. La ocasión era sumamente especial, por lo que las monjas agustinas del Convento de Santa Mónica crearon un platillo único para agasajar al héroe demostrándole respeto y admiración, así que utilizaron ingredientes de temporada y representaron los tres colores de la naciente bandera mexicana (verde, blanco y rojo), la cual había sido ideada por el propio Iturbide y que tienen un especial significado: el verde; la independencia, el blanco; la religión y el rojo; la unión. Fue así como las religiosas crearon los chiles en nogada, una exótica mezcla de sabores dulces y salados que contienen más de veinte ingredientes, como carne de res y de cerdo además de diversas frutas de origen tropical que sólo pueden adquirirse en agosto y septiembre. ración es sumamente minuciosa: una vez que los chiles han sido rellenados, se rebozan con huevo y se sirven con un acompañamiento que simboliza el lábaro patrio: primero la blanca nogada, hecha con nuez de castilla, queso y leche; luego se adornan con los granos color bermellón de la granada y se le agrega el perejil para tener los colores verde, blanco y rojo, quedando así plasmada la bandera de México. Esta especialidad de la gastronomía mexicana no sólo es un deleite para el paladar, también es sumamente nutritivo, ya que contiene todos los grupos de alimentos, es decir, contiene frutas y verduras (vitaminas y minerales), carne y leche (proteínas) nueces y azúcar (energía) entre otros muchos ingredientes, convirtiéndolo así en un platillo muy completo. De modo que este 15 de Septiembre no puede faltar en nuestra mesa un delicioso chile en nogada para revivir, con cada bocado, la Independencia de nuestro país, además de la riqueza que hay en esta tierra mestiza. As the story goes, Agustín de Iturbide, after signing the Córdoba Treaty which declared the Mexican Independence, decided to celebrate his birthday (August 28th) in the city of Puebla. The occasion was an extremely special one, reason why the Agustin nuns from the Santa Mónica Convent created a unique dish to honor the hero in a demonstration of respect and admiration. They used seasonal ingredients with which they represented the three colors of what was then the beginning of the Mexican flag (green, white and red), devised by Iturbide with a special significance: green for independence, white for religion and red for union. This was how the nuns created the chile en nogada, an exotic mix of sweet and salty flavors that contains more than 20 ingredients, such as beef, pork and diverse tropical fruits only in season on August and September.
