Además, en esta zona sólo se cobra el 10 por ciento de IVA y no el 15 que rige en el resto del país; por lo que las joyas, perfumes, cosméticos y accesorios tienen precios hasta un 40% inferiores a los de Estados Unidos y el resto del mundo.
Luxury items that are imported into the Mexican Caribbean pay low custom duty taxes. This makes it a very attractive tourist destination to shop in at low prices. Here you only pay 10% in IVA (taxes) instead of the customary 15% in the rest of the country. This is why jewelry, perfumes, cosmetics and accesories have prices up to 40% below those in the United States and the rest of the world.

Gracias a las reformas hechas a la Ley del Impuesto al Valor Agregado, a los turistas extranjeros que visiten México se les reembolsará el IVA siempre y cuando cumplan con ciertos requisitos, como: • Que el comprobante fiscal que expide el contribuyente, reúna los requisitos que establece el Servicio de Administración Tributaria • Que las mercancías adquiridas salgan efectivamente del país • Que se realicen compras mínimas de mil 200 pesos Esta reforma entrará en vigor el 1 de Julio de 2006, pero antes deberá turnarse a la Cámara de Senadores para hacer oficial el reembolso a los turistas internacionales.
Thanks to reforms made to the Mexican aggregated value tax law, international tourists visiting Mexico will be able to get their shopping taxes reimbursed considering they meet the following requirements: • The receipt given by the shop owner must meet all the requirements established by the tax authorities. • The merchandise must leave the country once purchased. • A minimum requirement of $1,200 pesos in shopping receipts must be presented. This reform is set to begin as of July 1st, 2006 once it is made official by the Senate that tax reimbursement for tourists is legal.
