Su pasión es la fotografía, pero también se desempeña como asistente legal corporativa en el centro de Miami, Florida para el buffet jurídico más grande de la ciudad. She is a freelance photographer who is based in Miami. While photography is her passion, she is also a corporate legal assistant in downtown Miami at Florida’s largest law firm. When she visits the Riviera Maya, she feels refreshed and rejuvenated by its beauty and culture. For this reason, this destination holds a special place in her heart.

Mexico City native by birth and heart. Today, he is adopted by and adapted to Playa del Carmen. He spent some of his “best years” as a journalist in Editorial MotorpressTelevisa. Gonzalez holds a degree in Communication from the UNAM with a postgraduate degree in Exterior Commerce from ITAM and a University Level Teaching Degree by the Universidad of Tepeyac. He has contributed to diverse newspapers and specialized magazines in the matters of culture, labor, and tourism. He is also a scriptwriter for radio and television.

Ignacio Maciel is an Argentinean writer who now lives in Playa del Carmen and has fallen in love with the area. He is a published writer and expert on gastronomy and tourism. Currently, he writes for different print mediums, and awaits the publication of his next book, Zen and the Art of Wine Tasting, which boasts a prologue written by Ferrán Adrià of the restaurant El Bulli.

De misma forma, nos enorgullece informarle que ya contamos con el IN Riviera Maya’s Polo Team, integrado por cuatro grandes polistas quienes jugarán todos los años en el torneo más importante del sur de México, La Copa Del Rey; de la que somos la revista oficial y con distribución exclusiva. El Polo es glamour, velocidad, destreza y pasión, el Caribe Mexicano cuenta con varios torneos nacionales e internacionales a lo largo del año, dos clubes ecuestres de Polo con todas las instalaciones para práctica, hospedaje, y torneos profesionales. El Polo lo traen a México los mineros Ingleses en 1880, pero la familia Escandón – Barron lo introduce e impulsa la cultura ecuestre mexicana. En 1936 la primer medalla Olímpica de bronce en la historia de México fue en Polo, en el mundial de Polo de 1987 México llegó al subcampeonato. En 2008 México fue la sede del Mundial de Polo y hoy, considerado por muchos, el mejor jugador Polo de mundo es un mexicano.

Polo is an intriguing sport that has glamour, speed, skill, and passion, and the Mexican Caribbean boasts various national and international tournaments throughout the year, plus two equestrian Polo clubs with all the necessary facilities for practicing, horse keeping, and professional tournaments. Polo was brought to Mexico by English miners in 1880, but it was the Escandon-Barron family who really introduced and drove the equestrian culture in Mexico. In 1936, the first Bronze Olympic medal in the history of Mexico was won in Polo; in the World Polo Championship of 1987 Mexico was strong enough to reach the semifinals. The AMG Miami Beach Polo World Cup was a three-day tournament featuring top polo players such as Nacho Figueras, Luis Escobar, and U.S. number one player Nic Roldan, among others. The tournament was watched with interest by Polo enthusiasts in Miami.

he first evidence of the game of polo being played allowed us to trace its origins to 6th century in Persia; but the professional history of this sport is relatively new. in the 80’s, the International Polo Federation (FIP) was founded, and the first Polo World Championship was in Buenos Aires in 1987. Today, polo is practiced in all parts of the world, but only certain nations that reach a level of excellence (a 14 goal handicap) can enter the select group that, every three years, competes for the honor to be named the best team in the world during the Polo World Championship.

Historically, Argentina has excelled from the very start. However, the last decade showed Brazil, Mexico, Chile, England, and Australia playing strongly in memorable matches and ascending to the podium through eight World Championships. Mexico City was given the honor of hosting the last World Championship in 2008, organized by the Mexican Polo Federation (FMP), where the level of the preliminary teams showed ample growth in comparison with other World Championships. Taking advantage of opportunities, Chile left having won the World Championship trophy for the first time, followed by Brazil and Mexico in third place, both having performed impeccably in this sport that shows great promise to this great nation in the future.

ESTANCIA GRANDE, SAN LUIS, ARGENTINA unque los primeros relatos que nos hablan del juego de polo nos llegan desde Persia en el siglo sexto antes de Cristo, el juego profesional de este deporte es relativamente nuevo. Apenas en los años 80 se formó la Federación Internacional de Polo (FIP) y la primera copa Mundial se disputó en Buenos Aires en 1987. Hoy por hoy es un hecho que el Polo se practica en todas partes del mundo, pero sólo aquellas naciones que alcanzan un nivel de excelencia (14 goles de hándicap) pueden ingresar al selecto grupo que cada tres años se disputa el honor de ser el “mejor equipo del mundo” en el Campeonato Mundial de Polo. Históricamente, Argentina ha sobresalido desde sus inicios; sin embargo en la última década países como Brasil, México, Chile, Inglaterra y Australia se han batido en duelos memorables para ascender al podio en las ocho ediciones que se han llevado a cabo de este campeonato. La Ciudad de México fue la privilegiada que albergó en el 2008 el último torneo internacional organizado por la FIT, donde el nivel de los países intervinientes presentó un amplio crecimiento en comparación con otros mundiales. En esta oportunidad, Chile se alzó con el trofeo mayor por primera vez, seguido por Brasil y en tercer lugar México con una impecable actuación, en un deporte que presenta a esta gran nación como una de las grandes promesas a futuro.

This September, at the Estancia Grande in San Luis Argentina, the 9th World Polo Championship will take place. There, the 10 finalist teams, chosen by process of elimination from the total 52 teams in the competition during the preliminary matches, will gallop after the ball for a chance to play a part in the history of this magnificent sport, where the abilities of the riders are complemented by the speed of the finest purebred horses. Countries such as Argentina, Brazil, the United States, England, New Zealand, Spain, Chile, France, India, Australia, and Pakistan are some of the biggest favorites in the tournament, although Latin America has obtained seven titles from the eight previous championships, and is considered as a superpower, difficult to defeat for those teams improving their game in distinct international events from Saudia Arabia, to Polo Beach on the shores of our own Riviera Maya. However, truly Argentina and Brazil, winners of three Championships each, will make it a match anticipated by millions, while Mexico, as in the past years, is definitely among the first three, looking to play its way to its second World Championship final.

En septiembre de este año, en la Estancia Grande, en San Luis Argentina, se llevará a cabo el Campeonato Mundial de Polo 2011, en su novena edición. Allí 10 países finalistas, de los 52 intervinientes en las eliminatorias, correrán tras la bocha para hacerse un lugar en la historia de este magnífico deporte, donde las habilidades de los jinetes se complementan con la velocidad de los más finos caballos pura sangre. iempre han existido las alianzas exitosas a lo largo de la historia y esta no es la excepción: el Polo y los buenos vinos se han ido convirtiendo poco a poco en una de las “mancuernas” que más llaman la atención en el mundo del “buen vivir”, gracias a los valores que comparten. Todo parece indicar que el Polo tiene sus raíces más profundas en la lejana Persia, en el siglo VI a.C., aunque hay quienes discrepan y nos remiten a la India, alrededor del año 300 antes de Cristo… pero la realidad es que quienes le dieron una forma más cercana a lo que hoy todos conocemos fueron los ingleses a mediados del siglo XIX. De hecho, este deporte es regido por el Reglamento establecido en 1875 en Gran Bretaña, por la Hurlingham Polo Association de Londres. Por su parte, México dio sus primeros pasos en esta hermosa disciplina a finales del siglo XIX y rápidamente se consolidaron grandes actuaciones de los representantes nacionales, tanto que a la fecha se considera que el mejor “polista” del mundo es mexicano: Carlos Gracida. Current evidence seems to show that Polo has its roots in Persia, in the sixth century BC, although some disagree and trace its origins back to India, circa 300 BC. The reality is that polo, as we know it today, was created by the British in the mid-nineteenth century. In fact, the modern sport is governed by rules issued in 1875 in Britain by the Hurlingham Polo Association in London. As for Mexico, it took its first steps in this beautiful discipline in the late nineteenth century and quickly excelled to the level of winning awesome matches in front of national representatives, and to this date, the man considered the best polo player in the world is a Mexican: Carlos Gracida. Today, because areas to practice polo are increasing in number, step by step Polo has been carving itself an important niche, and minute by minute, day after day and tournament after tournament, polo is winning more and more fans around the world.

Major alliances already exist between world-renowned teams and some of the best wineries of the country. Some of the most notable examples include: the polo field Cheval des Andes on the grounds of Las Compuertas winery in Vistalba, within the same 35 acres that boast grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Ernesto Catena, a horse enthusiast, decided to build his own polo fields and owns the Escorihuela Gascon winery, and although the winery does not have its own polo team, it provides facilities that host matches and exhibitions among the socialites of both Argentina and around the world.

Por su parte, Ernesto Catena, que es un amante de los caballos, decidió construir su propia cancha de Polo y tiene la bodega Escorihuela Gascón; aunque no posee equipo de Polo propio, sí prestan las instalaciones para llevar a cabo algunos partidos y exhibiciones con personajes de la sociedad tanto de la Argentina como del resto del mundo. En algunas otras latitudes se siguen algunos patrones similares a los que Argentina ha puesto de moda desde hace ya algunos años. En Virginia del Norte, Estados Unidos de Norteamérica, se fusiona uno de los festivales de vino más tradicionales (The Wine Festival at The Plains) con un campeonato de Polo (Commonwealth Cup of Polo) donde se dan cita, además del deporte y el vino, elementos extras como la música y deliciosos platillos típicos de la región (y muchos, pero muchos actos de caridad). In Northern Virginia in the United States, one of the most traditional wine festivals, The Wine Festival at The Plains, merges with a Polo championship, the Commonwealth Cup of Polo, bringing together, in addition to sports and wine, music and delicious traditional dishes of the region and a great many charitable events as well. In Santa Rosa, California, an annual Polo tournament is held called Polo In The Wine Country, where Polo teams match up and more than 10 brands of wine, spirits and beer are enjoyed during exhibitions and competitions. The selection, then, should be a spiritual guideline, harmonious with the slightly heavier or lighter consistency rather than being engulfed in it.” As such, the appointment of Carlos Miramontes as new Sommelier de la Cava “Xcaret Mexico Wine” is not accidental. Having a graduate degree in Tourism Business Administration from the Universidad del Valle de Mexico, his vast experience with wines permits him to discuss each bottle from the consumer’s perspective, in an objective manner, without any ties to the producer. Born in Mexico City in 1980, he became a local of Quintana Roo a little over a decade ago, his career path in the food and beverage industry meandering through some of the most prestigious restaurants and hotels in Mexico City. This experience laid the groundwork for implementing a wine program that would strengthen, years later, the beginning of his career as a Sommelier. Extensive formal training as a wine taster for two years in vineyards in France, Italy and Spain, countries with a strong tradition of wine, gave him extensive experience in Mexico, where wine pairing is soon to become the protagonist of every meal. This passion for Mexican wine led to the opportunity to work as a Sommelier in the Wine Cellar “Wine of Mexico Xcaret” in the Riviera Maya—a space designed for the exaltation of the finest cultural expressions of Mexico in all its forms.

LA HISTORIA DE LA VARIEDAD DE CEPAS Y VINO EN MEXICO THE HISTORY OF GRAPE VARIETIES AND WINE IN MEXICO l vino, néctar de los dioses y regalo divino, nos ha servido como acompañante para satisfacernos a lo largo de los años, es la bebida por excelencia en toda sociedad y cultura, y debido a sus reconocidos beneficios, se disfruta en todas las sociedades intelectuales alrededor del mundo y se ha convertido en sinónimo de estilo y buen gusto. ¿De dónde viene el vino? La respuesta es un poco más compleja porque aunque el vino proviene de la especie de uva Vitis Vinífera, diferentes variedades de esta especie están regadas alrededor del mundo. El término varietal es utilizado para referirse a vinos hechos predominantemente de una variedad de uva. Uno puedo diferenciar cada variedad de acuerdo a la forma y color de las hojas y racimos de la viña, ya que cada una cuenta con características visuales inconfundibles. Los vinos generalmente se fabrican mezclando diferentes variedades de uvas. Cuando el vino está hecho de al menos un 80% de la misma variedad de uva, le brinda al vino su carácter varietal. ine, the nectar of the gods and a divine gift, has served us as a satisfying accompaniment through the ages. It is the drink of excellence throughout society and culture, and due to its widely recognized benefits, it is enjoyed in all intellectual societies around the world, and has become synonymous with style and good taste. But where does wine come from? The answer is a bit more complex because although nearly all wine comes from the Vitis vinifera grape species, different varieties of this species are spread all around the world. The term varietal is used to refer to wines made predominantly from one grape variety. By the shape and color of a vine’s leaves and clusters, one can tell each variety apart, since each bears inalienable visual characteristics. Wines are usually made by blending different grape varieties. When the wine is made up of at least 80% of the same grape variety, it gives the wine its varietal character. Thus, the choice of the grape variety is fundamental to determining the character of the wine. The main red grapes cultivated domestically include Cabernet Franc, Claret, Grenache, Mission, Nebbiolo, Petite Sirah, Ruby Cabernet, Zinfandel, while white wines are produced from Chenin Blanc, Fumé Blanc, French Colombard and Semillion.

Debido a que la variedad europea no estaba acostumbrada al clima seco, los recortes se plantaron en los tallos de las uvas nativas, una técnica que induce un cierto tipo de “clon” natural de la planta. La producción de vino mexicano comenzó a aumentar a un ritmo vertiginoso a tal grado que a mediados del siglo XVII la corona española temerosa de la futura competencia, ordenó a México parar su producción vinícola, con excepción de aquellos vinos para fines de la iglesia. Después de la Revolución, el vino mexicano se libró de este decreto y comenzó lentamente el regreso a su esplendor. La industria vinícola de hoy en día es una mezcla de viejo y nuevo, especialmente en México. Las uvas son recogidas a mano durante la noche, para que no se marchiten o derritan bajo el sol caliente. Las máquinas de prensado y fermentación son aparatos de metal de alta tecnología que usan fuerzas centrífugas y técnicas de separación flotante de “política agraria común” para preparar las uvas para su fermentación. El añejamiento se lleva a cabo en barriles de roble, puede variar dependiendo en el varietal o en la mezcla de las variedades de las uvas. Las uvas de vino rojo deben ser expuestas a sus pieles para mantener su maravilloso color, de no ser así se podría producir vino blanco a base de uvas rojas. Frecuentemente el vino crece en climas desérticos donde las uvas reciben un poco menos de agua, forzándolas a poner todo en sus frutos, esto resulta en menos uvas en el vino, pero con mayor sabor, y azúcares y ácidos más condensados como consecuencia. Los viñedos del norte cuentan con condiciones sin igual para crecer uvas. Estas son el Valle de Guadalupe y de Calafia, los valles de San Antonio de las Minas y Santo Tomas en Baja California. El valle central de Querétaro es reconocido por su producción de vinos espumosos, los cuales se exhiben en su Festival anual Ruta de Queso y Vino. Otras regiones vinícolas incluyen a Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Coahuila, y Cuatro Ciénagas. El primer viñedo de las Américas fue Casa Madero en el Valle de Parras Coahuila, que existe desde el siglo XVI hasta el presente año. Tomado con medida, el vino es visto como parte de una comida saludable. No es una bebida, sino una experiencia completa, su color, aroma, sabor y textura involucran y estimulan todos los sentidos. En una cata de vino, el vino debe complementar la comida y viceversa, para que uno sea compensado con el realce del otro.

THE HISTORY OF THE MEXICAN GRAPEVINE Grapevines grew in Mexico in prehistoric times and were likely enjoyed by the native civilizations as part of their daily diet. The conquistadors of Spain, after conquering Tenochtitlan, found wild grape species growing in the surrounding area: among these were Vitis rupestris, Vitis labrusca, and Vitis berlandieri. But these weren’t as suited to winemaking as the Vitis vinifera grew in Europe, cuttings of which were soon imported and planted in Mexico by the Spanish, encouraged by Hernan Cortes in 1524. Since the European variety wasn’t accustomed to the dry climate, the cuttings were planted onto the stems of native grapes, a technique that induces a type of natural plant ‘cloning’. Mexican wine production soon soared to such levels that in the mid-17th century the Spanish crown, fearful of future competition with Spain’s own wines, ordered all Mexican wine production stopped, with an exception for wines used in the church. After the Revolution, Mexican wine broke free of this decree and began its slow return to splendor. Today’s wine industry is a mixture of old and new, especially in Mexico. The grapes are picked by hand, at night, so they don’t wither or melt under the hot sun. The pressing and fermentation machines are hightech metal apparatuses that use centrifugal force and “cap” floating separation techniques to prepare the grapes for fermentation. The aging is in oak barrels, varied depending on the varietal or in the mixture of grape varieties. Red wine grapes have to be exposed to their skins to preserve their gorgeous color; otherwise, a white wine could be produced out of red grapes. Despite their celebrity, wine grapes are not “spoiled”. Rather, wine is grown in desert-like climates where the grapes are given a little less water, forcing them to put their all into their fruits. This results in fewer grapes on the vine, but they are more flavorful and condensed in their sugar and acids because of it. The vineyards of the north boast unmatched conditions for growing grapes. These are the Guadalupe and Calafia Valleys, and the San Antonio de las Minas and Santo Tomas Valleys in Baja California. The Central Valley of Querétaro is admired for its production of sparkling wines, which are showcased in its annual Ruta de Queso y Vino Festival. Other wine producing regions include Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Coahuila, and Cuatro Cienegas. The first vineyard of the Americas was that of Casa Madero, in the Valley of Parras, Coahuila existing from the sixteenth century to the present day. When taken in moderation, wine is regarded as a healthful part of your meal. It is not a drink, but a full experience; its color, aroma, flavor and texture involve and stimulate all the senses. In a wine pairing, the wine must complement the meal and vice versa, so that a flaw in one may be compensated by the another.

Se refiere al concepto ecológico de la reserva del Valle de Santo Tomás: la tierra, el aliento sobre el viñedo, la proximidad del mar, el amanecer que acaricia el valle, el vuelo del pájaro, el puma sigiloso, el agua nutriendo, el trabajo humano. Las tablas con los viñedos más antiguos de cada varietal dan vida a estos vinos acreedores a medallas nacionales e internacionales desde su creación: Alisio Reserva 2006, expresión de uva Chardonnay, proviene de las tablas 18, 19, 20a y 21 suroeste. Fermentado en barrica y reposado 6 meses más en barricas nuevas de roble francés es un vino intenso, especiado, con notas de coco y leche quemada, con buen ataque en boca, amable, de lenta evolución, taninos maduros y suaves con un final largo. Maridaje: Chiles en nogada. Alisio Reserva 2006 was pressed from the Chardonnay grape, grown in rows numbered 18, 19, 20a, and 21 of the southeast section. Fermented in the cask and aged for 6 months in new French oak barrels, it’s an intense wine, full of spice, with coconut and burnt milk notes, with good impact in the mouth, agreeable, of slowly evolving, with soft and mature tannins, and a pronounced finish. Pairing: Chiles en Nogada.

Sirocco Reserva 2005, expresión de uva Syrah, proviene de las tablas 40a, 40b, 41a y 41b sureste. Con 15 meses de crianza en barrica de roble francés obtenemos un vino de buen ataque en boca, equilibrado, con una estructura tánica madura para un final largo y ahumado. Sirocco Reserva 2005 was pressed from the Syrah grape, grown in rows 40a, 40b, 41a and 41b in the southeast section. Its 15 months of maturation in new French oak casks resulted in a wine with great mouth feel, balanced, with a mature tannic structure, for a smoked finish. Its aromas remind you of violets and frutal scents of nance and prune compote. Pairing: Mole Negro.

In the Vientos line, the term instead describes the ecology behind the Reserva del Valle de Santo Tomas: the earth, the breezes blowing upon the vineyard, its proximity to the sea, the sunrise that warms the valley, the flight of the bird, the stealthy puma, the water that nourishes it, and the human labor that produces it. Pairing: BBQ Ribs.

Es un vino equilibrado, de buen ataque para un final largo y complejo. Sus aromas son de pimiento con notas de caramelo y tostados. Maridaje: Filete a la pimienta. Cierzo Reserva 2005 was pressed from the Cabernet Sauvignon grape, from rows 3, 4, and 7 in the south section. It spent 18 months maturing in new French oak barrels. It’s a balanced wine with good impact and a big and complex finish. Its aromas are of pepper with caramel and toasted notes. Pairing: Filete a la Pimienta.

Prueba de Manejo Prestige VIVIENDO Y CONOCIENDO EL CARIBE MEXICANO GETTING DOWN & ABOUT THE MEXICAN CARIBBEAN La prueba de manejo Prestige dieron la oportunidad a los asistentes de traer a su familia a este divertido evento donde pudieron manejar autos de Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep o Ram. Se ofrecieron circuitos de manejo en camino y fuera de camino, al igual que área de juego para niños y spa para familias. The Prestige Test Drive event allowed attendees to bring their family to a fun event where they could test drive a Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, or Ram car. On road and off road driving circuits were offered, as well as a childrens’ play area and spa for families.

En las instalaciones del Kukulkan Cancun Golf Club, se llevó a cabo la bienvenida oficial por parte de la Federación Mexicana de Golf a los primeros 100 golfistas quintanarroenses federados, un hecho histórico en el Golf de nuestro Estado. Este acontecimiento se celebró con un torneo de skins exclusivo para federados, mismo que se estará llevando a cabo cada 15 días. El evento fue precedido por la presidenta de handicaps y reglas de la FMG Ana Luisa Hernández, quien fue acompañada por miembros del comité directivo de la Asociación de Golf del Caribe Mexicano.

The Kukulcan Cancun Golf Club was the site of the Mexican Golf Federation’s official welcome to the first 100 Quintana Roo golfers that were registered by the Federation, a historical act for our state. This event was celebrated with a Skins format tournament that was exclusive for the federated golfers, and will occur every 15 days. The event was presided over by the president of handicaps and rules of the MGF, Ana Luisa Hernandez, accompanied by members of the Directive Committee of the Mexican Caribbean Golf Association. Un recorrido por distintos materiales en los que se entrelazan algodón, seda, henequén, lana y diversas arcillas para formar juegos de luces y sombras, sobreexposición del color, texturas y formas que trascienden en el tiempo y espacio. El trabajo de dichos creadores ha estado presente en más de 40 exposiciones en museos y galerías en México. Su colección ha trascendido fronteras, exhibiéndose particularmente en Estados Unidos y Canadá. El Museum of Fine Arts of Mexico en Chicago, Illinois, y otros sitios como New Orleans, Los Angeles, Phoenix y Miami son un claro ejemplo de su internalización. Tourism and the Arts are merged at the newly opened Art Gallery at the Fairmont Mayakoba Hotel, true to its principles of offering its guests truly regional experiences and places to celebrate Mexico’s origin, through the work of two prominent Mexican artists residing in the Riviera Maya, Abel Vásquez and Melva Medina. “Abel Vásquez, born of magic and for magic, of the earth and for the earth. THE LEANING LIGHTHOUSE One of the emblems of Puerto Morelos is the famous tilted lighthouse. A strong hurricane, Beulah, passed through the area in 1967, hitting the coast with such strength that it eventually rendered the lighthouse useless as a beacon, leaving us with a reminder of the power of nature.
