kent union announces #buildingup
Photo by Vijay Dubb EACH year Kent Union sets its priority campaign for improving the student experience at UKC. This year, InQuire is happy to encourage you to support Building Up. Union President Tom Ritchie has this to say: “The campaign defines the direction that the students want Kent Union to move in over that year. Whether a parttime officer, course rep, sabbatical or member of a sports club or society, the priority campaign must be something that everyone can buy into and support. After a summer of analysing the student satisfaction survey, and looking at the top issue students want changed, the sabbatical team and Kent Union is proud to announce its priority campaign
for 2012/2013. This campaign is focused around getting a new, centralised Union building akin to that at Christ Church and other student unions around the country. Part of the decision came in response to students asking why they could not: • Easily access a space for their society, or sports club to meet. • Have a dedicated space to store their equipment to allow them to do their activity. • Have access to a focal point on campus, as at other unions where they could engage with the student union. • Have the best possible opportunity to develop their skills through extra-curricular activity while
at the University of Kent. We are really excited about this campaign and the feedback so far has been unbelievably positive with hundreds of students giving us their ideas about how this building can work for them. The new building also presents an amazing opportunity to put student development and graduate employability at the top of the agenda, so that all students can use the facilities to improve their skills while at university. This is the biggest issue facing students who graduate from university. This is obviously a major project for both us and the university that will cost millions of pounds to achieve. This is why
we chose it as the priority campaign, that every student can get behind. For too long students have done so much good with so few great facilities. Winning this campaign would mean our students would be able to develop everything they do into something great! However, to win this campaign all students will need to be involved, regardless of their interests. Each and every student can make the change that will lead to the success of this development. So this is a call to all students to campaign, talk and generally get involved.” You can speak to Ritchie at unionpresident@kent.ac.uk or you can follow @KUBuildingUp on twitter.
